Background: With over 18.6 million deaths annually, cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of mortality worldwide. One such complication of CVDs that can result in stroke is atrial fibrillation (Afib). As part of global outreach and awareness, World Heart Day and Atrial Fibrillation Awareness Month are celebrated annually on 29 September and the month of September, respectively. Both of these events are important cardiovascular awareness initiatives to assist public education and develop awareness strategies, and they have received considerable support from leading international organizations., Objective: We studied the global digital impact of these campaigns via Google Trends and Twitter., Methods: We evaluated the overall number of tweets, impressions, popularity and top keywords/hashtags, and interest by region to determine the digital impact using various analytical tools. Hashtag network analysis was done using ForceAtlas2 model. Beyond social media, Google Trends web search analysis was carried out for both awareness campaigns to examine 'interest by region' over the past five years by analyzing relative search volume., Results: #WorldHeartDay and #UseHeart (dedicated social media hashtags for World Heart Day by the World Heart Federation) alone amassed over 1.005 billion and 41.89 million impressions as compared with the 1.62 million and 4.42 million impressions of #AfibMonth and #AfibAwarenessMonth, respectively. On Google Trends web search analysis, the impact of Afib awareness month was limited to the USA, but World Heart Day had a comparatively global reach with limited digital involvement in the African continent., Conclusions: World Heart Day and Afib awareness month present a compelling case study of vast digital impact and the effectiveness of targeted campaigning using specific themes and keywords. Anticoagulation alone or in combination with other treatment strategies are implemented to reduce the risk of stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). Gastrointestinal bleeding (GIB) is a common complication of oral anticoagulation with a prevalence of 1% to 3% in patients on long term oral anticoagulation. We analyzed the national inpatient sample database from the year 2005 to 2015 to report evidence on the frequency, trends, predictors, clinical outcomes, and economic burden of GIB among AF hospitalizations. A total of 34,260,000 AF hospitalizations without GIB and 1,846,259 hospitalizations with GIB (5.39%) were included. The trend of AF hospitalizations with GIB per 100 AF hospitalizations remained stable from the year 2005 to 2015 (p value = 0.0562). AF hospitalizations with GIB had a higher frequency of congestive heart failure, long term kidney disease, long term liver disease, anemia, and alcohol abuse compared with AF hospitalizations without GIB. AF hospitalizations with GIB had a higher odds of in-hospital mortality (Odds ratio (OR) 1.47; 95% Confidence interval (CI): 1.46 to 1.48, p-value <0.0001), mechanical ventilation (OR 1.69; 95% CI: 1.68 to 1.70, p-value <0.0001), and blood transfusion (OR 7.2; 95% CI: 7.17 to 7.22, P-value <0.0001) compared with AF hospitalizations without GIB. AF hospitalizations with GIB had a lower odds of stroke (OR 0.51; 95% CI: 0.51 to 0.52, p-value <0.0001) compared with AF hospitalizations without GIB. Further, AF hospitalizations with GIB had a higher median length of stay and cost of hospitalization compared with AF hospitalizations without GIB. In conclusion, the frequency of GIB is 5.4% in AF hospitalizations and the frequency of GIB remained stable in the last decade as shown in this analysis. When GIB occurs, it is associated with higher resource utilization. Background: Atrial Fibrillation (AF) has been associated with various behavioral risk factors such as tobacco, alcohol, and/or substances abuse., Objective: The main objective is to describe the national trends and burden of tobacco and substance abuse in AF hospitalizations. Also, this study identifies potential population who are more vulnerable to these substance abuse among AF hospitalizations., Methods: The National Inpatient Sample database from 2007 to 2015 was utilized and the hospitalizations with AF were identified using the international classification of disease, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification code. They were stratified into without abuse, tobacco use disorder (TUD), substance use disorder (SUD), alcohol use disorder (AUD) and drug use disorder (DUD)., Results: Of 3,631,507 AF hospitalizations, 852,110 (23.46%) had TUD, 1,851,170 (5.1%) had SUD, 155,681 (4.29%) had AUD and 42,667 (1.17%) had DUD. The prevalence of TUD, SUD, AUD, and DUD was substantially increased across all age groups, races, and gender during the study period. Female sex was associated with lower odds TUD, SUD, AUD, and DUD. Among AF hospitalizations, the black race was associated with higher odds of SUD, and DUD. Introduction: Atrial fibrillation is the most frequently occurring and studied arrhythmia. There is a limited data on young patients presenting with atrial fibrillation., Objective: The objective of this research article was to assess the trend of hospitalization, epidemiological characteristics and economic burden in the young adult, aged 18-45 years, presenting with atrial fibrillation., Methods: Hospitalization data from the National Inpatient Sample between 2005 and 2015 were used to analyze prevalence of risk factors and financial burden in young adults with atrial fibrillation., Results: From 2005 to 2015, a total of 260,080 admissions were included in the study. From 2005 to 2015, there was a decreasing trend of total admissions with atrial fibrillation among the age group of 18-45 years compared to total admissions due to atrial fibrillation and total population. However, there was an increasing trend of admission observed in young females, white and black population. The frequency of hypertension, diabetes and obesity among young adults admitted with atrial fibrillation nearly doubled from 2005 to 2015. There was also a marked increase in the frequency of obstructive sleep apnea, alcohol abuse and drug abuse among patients admitted with atrial fibrillation. Background Patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and atrial fibrillation (AF) are at increased stroke risk in comparison to those with non-valvular AF not affected by HCM. Objectives To investigate the role of left atrial appendage closure (LAAC) in patients with HCM and AF. Methods and results We identified patients with HCM and AF using the National Readmission Dataset. Patients were stratified based on LAAC status. The primary efficacy outcome was a composite of ischaemic and haemorrhagic stroke, TIA, and all-cause mortality. The primary safety outcome was a composite of major bleeding and pericardial complications. Patients were matched using inverse probability of treatment weighting. Cox-proportional hazard regression was applied to calculate the hazard ratio (HR) with a 95% confidence interval (CI) on matched cohorts. We identified 71 980 patients with HCM and AF. 1351 (1.9%) patients underwent LAAC. Two hundred and eighty-seven (21.2%) underwent transcatheter LAAC. LAAC was associated with a lower risk of the primary efficacy outcome (2.5% vs. 5.4%, HR: 0.38; 95% CI: 0.17–0.88; P = 0.024), the primary safety outcome (2.9% vs. 6.8%, HR: 0.39; 95% CI: 0.23–0.66, P = 0.001), and reduced major bleeding. The LAAC group trended towards a lower risk of ischaemic stroke and all-cause mortality. Conclusion Surgical and transcatheter LAAC was associated with a lower risk of haemorrhagic stroke and major bleeding. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
