- Abstract
Percutaneous left atrial appendage occlusion was introduced as an alternative method for prevention of thromboembolism in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation after extensive animal work in 2001. The first device was named Percutaneous Left Atrial Appendage Transcatheter Occlusion (PLAATO) and patented by the company Appriva. The device was invented by Michael Lesh, MD., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.)
