The increasing ubiquity and mobility of virtual reality (VR) devices has introduced novel use cases, one of which is using VR in vehicles, both human-driven and fully automated. However, the effects of the adoption of VR-in-the-car on user task performance, safety, trust, and perceived risk are still largely unknown or not fully understood. Blocking out the physical world and substituting it with a virtual environment has many potential benefits including fewer distractions and greater productivity. However, one shortcoming of this seclusion is losing situation awareness which becomes critical in dynamic, in-vehicle environments, even when the user is not in the driver's seat. Hence, this study aims to understand the effects of providing VR users with situation awareness cues about the real world, when riding in a human-driven or a fully automated car. The results of this driving simulator experiment provide valuable insights into passengers' experience and their information needs while immersed in VR environments. Identifying passengers' unique challenges and needs, as well as developing solutions for them, is expected to improve users' travel experience towards a wider adoption of VR devices. The use of breath detection in vehicles can reduce the number of vehicular accidents caused by drivers in poor physical condition. Prior studies of contactless respiration detection mainly targeted a static person. However, there are emerging applications to sense a driver, with emphasis on contactless methods. For example, being able to detect a driver's respiration while driving by using a vehicular Wi-Fi system can significantly enhance driving safety. The sensing system can be mounted on the back of the driver's seat, and it can sense the tiny chest displacement of the driver via Wi-Fi signals. The body displacement and car vibrations could introduce significant noise in the sensed signal. The noise then needs to be filtered to obtain the driver's respiration. In this work, the noise in the sensed signal is proposed to be reduced using a Huber Kalman filter to restore the original respiration curve. Through several experiments in terms of different drivers, different car models, multiple passengers, and abnormal breathing, we demonstrate the accuracy and robustness of the Huber Kalman filter in driver's respiration. The comfort of a car seat depends on many parameters of the seat and the characteristics of the people sitting on it. The paper deals with the innovation of a measuring device for testing car seats in laboratory conditions. The device now makes possibility to realize the vertical movement of the car seat and both the horizontal movement in two directions front-rear and left-right. The vertical movement can realized separately or simultaneously with the horizontal movements. Dependent or independent excitation in all three axes perform laboratory testing automobile seats same as when driving a real car. The advantage of laboratory testing is very good repeatability of tests. Long-term durability tests also should be performed in laboratory conditions in a 24-hour testing mode. The newly revised GB 13057-2014 'The strength of the seats and their anchorages of passenger vehicles' replaces the static test with a dynamic test, which puts forward higher requirements on seat safety. Considering safety and lightweight design, the LFT (Long glass Fiber reinforced Thermoplastic) is used to replace the original steel seat back frame. Combined with energy absorption model and topology optimisation, the force transmission path and detail structure design under both the forward loading and rearward loading conditions are carried out. In order to analyse the occupant protection performance, numerical models of composite seat and HybridIII dummy are established, and the safety and lightweight effect of LFT seat back frame are optimised and verified. Prolonged driving under real conditions can entail discomfort linked to driving posture, seat design features, and road properties like whole-body vibrations (WBV). This study evaluated the effect of three different seats (S1 = soft; S2 = firm; S3 = soft with suspension system) on driver's sitting behavior and perceived discomfort on different road types in real driving conditions. Twenty-one participants drove the same 195 km itinerary alternating highway, city, country, and mountain segments. Throughout the driving sessions, Contact Pressure (CP), Contact Surface (CS), Seat Pressure Distribution Percentage (SPD%) and Repositioning Movements (RM) were recorded via two pressure mats installed on seat cushion and backrest. Moreover every 20 minutes, participants rated their whole-body and local discomfort. While the same increase in whole-body discomfort with driving time was observed for all three seats, S3 limited local perceived discomfort, especially in buttocks, thighs, neck, and upper back. The pressure profiles of the three seats were similar for CP, CS and RM on the backrest but differed on the seat cushion. The soft seats (S1 & S3) showed better pressure distribution, with lower SPD% than the firm seat (S2). All three showed highest CP and CS under the thighs. Road type also affected both CP and CS of all three seats, with significant differences appearing between early city, highway and country segments. In the light of these results, automotive manufacturers could enhance seat design for reduced driver discomfort by combining a soft seat cushion to reduce pressure peaks, a firm backrest to support the trunk, and a suspension system to minimize vibrations. This study proposes a methodology that enables the comparison of textile materials from the point of view of corresponding comfort. Although this study focuses on textile materials used for the construction of car seats, the approach can be used more broadly. First, different aspects, which are more or less closely connected with our problem, are discussed. Among them, two characteristics, i.e. temperature conductivity and breathability, are important. Second, we discuss why it is important to have conclusions about comfort based not only on the subjective feelings of evaluators, but also on objective measurements. To that purpose, an experiment and a questionnaire summarising subjective feelings are proposed and concisely described. Furthermore, the choice of sensors, their placement in a car seat and the manner of recording data are discussed. Finally, the choice of appropriate statistical methods suitable for the analysis of collected data is discussed. The approach is illustrated via real experiments. Our findings support the current trend that the use of 3D spacer fabrics improves both breathability and sitting comfort in general. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The main motive for this research is the desire for the improvement of the automotive seat occupant's comfort by designing a heating mat prototype made with distance knitting technology with heating elements. In this study, the following design steps were undertaken: preparation of the trajectories of heating cables, calculating the resistance needed to obtain the estimated power of the whole mat, testing of available electroconductive yarns to assign the most suitable yarn to a specific design, preparation and testing of five heating mat prototypes with three various trajectories of the heating element. All samples were evaluated with the same criteria in order to find the most promising design. After all experiments, a prototype with stainless-steel Bekaert® VN 12.2 coated yarn as a heating element, showed the best performance, especially in combination with distance knitted fabric thanks to its internal construction. This work demonstrates that a three-dimensional distance knitted fabric with a heating element introduced into its structure will ensure the physiological sitting comfort. After further subsequent studies, the proposed method can be adapted for industrialisation by using warp knitting machines, thus improving the quality and durability of the heating mat. One of the main fields of application of personal sound zones (PSZs) is the car industry. PSZ systems are usually designed assuming that the acoustic environment is not changing. However, due to variability in the car cabin's acoustic conditions, it is necessary to design a system capable of adapting to these variations. This paper introduces the use of the filtered-x least-mean-squares algorithm to adapt a PSZ system in a car cabin when the seat positions change. The article focuses on four aspects. First, the effect of the initial coefficients is investigated to help with the convergence of the adaptive algorithm. Second, a study is made on the definition of the desired pressure and its effect on the reproduction. Third, the system's sensitivity to external noise is also evaluated. Last, the possibility to reduce the number of microphones for the adaptive system is considered. The method's performance is evaluated using a two headrest system installed in a car cabin and when moving the seats to different positions. This paper mainly discusses the application of Newmark's theories of communicative and semantic translation in automobile advertisement translation. After analyzing the translation examples of automobile advertisement text, title and trademark, the following conclusions are naturally drawn. The combination of communicative and semantic translation can guide translation practice more effectively. Semantic translation theory is preferred for automobile manual translation, while communicative translation theory is more suitable for automobile brand and slogan translation. Therefore, in order to achieve the intended effect of automobile advertisement, it is better to combine semantic translation with communicative translation in automobile advertisement translation. Film scholars writing about the Euro-American context note the strong historical and technical links between films and automobiles. Chinese cinema scholars have traced the relationship between mobile digital video (DV) recording devices and new interdisciplinary approaches to artmaking and filmmaking. However, the literature has yet to examine how this matrix of technologies operates in contemporary moving images produced in the Sinosphere. This article establishes a genealogy from cars-on-screen to screens-in-cars with examples from Jia Zhangke, Guan Hu and Huang Hsin-Yao and the lens-based works of Ai Weiwei and Cao Fei. In contrast, microfilms produced by BMW and Cadillac trade on neoliberal notions of the freedom on the open road, and the name recognition of Sinophone directors and stars to sell automobiles. Theoretically underpinning this work is Friedrich Kittler's definition of media as techniques of transmission, processing, and archiving of information; moreover, George Seigel's insights into the forensic qualities of media are read in relation to future evidentiary use of dashcam footage. In sum, the article focuses on mobilized vision enabled by cameras in cars, and demonstrates how these are manifest in the anxieties of fraud, the potentiality for violence, and the need to record the road. Objective The effects of seat height and anthropometric dimensions on drivers' preferred postures were investigated using a multiadjustable vehicle mock-up with a large number of adjustments and extended ranges. Background Many studies have been conducted on preferred driving posture under different test conditions showing mixed and even contradictory findings. No studies thus far have considered the clutch and compared Chinese and European drivers. Method Four seat height conditions were tested: free and three imposed heights (250, 300, and 350 mm). Sixty-one subjects (40 French-born and 21 Chinese-born) participated in the experiment, covering a large range of stature and sitting height-to-stature ratio. The RAMSIS kinematic model was used to reconstruct postures, and main intersegmental angles were extracted for characterizing posture. Results Under the free seat height condition, no significant differences in preferred intersegmental angles were observed between different participant groups. Seat height mainly affected trunk-thigh angle, whereas it had almost no effect on trunk orientation and other intersegmental angles. Chinese participants sat more forward in the seat, leading to a more opened trunk-thigh angle and a more reclined trunk. Conclusions Results suggest that intersegmental angles of preferred posture are not dependent on anthropometric dimensions, although shorter drivers prefer a slightly less reclined trunk. Self-selected driving posture results from a compromise between maintaining the intersegmental angles in one's preferred range and a preferred trunk orientation in space. Background: Car seat heaters are an increasingly common amenity in vehicles in the United States, but they have been shown to place neurologically impaired patients at risk for significant burns.Case Report: We discuss the case of a neurologically intact and otherwise healthy 49-year-old man who presented to the Emergency Department with second-degree gluteal and posterior upper thigh burns after using a car seat warmer for 8 consecutive hours. At no point during the course of his drive did he experience discomfort beyond feeling slightly warm. The patient was treated with supportive therapy and standard wound care, and he had a full recovery after 10 days. We review the pathophysiology of burns and discuss how seat heaters can place even neurologically intact patients at risk for significant burn injuries. WHY SHOULD AN EMERGENCY PHYSICIAN BE AWARE OF THIS?: Our case is the first published report of a neurologically intact patient sustaining significant burns from the use of a car seat heater. This case illustrates that burn injuries can develop after prolonged exposure even at low temperatures. Emergency physicians should perform a careful skin examination on all patients presenting with gluteal discomfort in whom a history of car seat warmer use is obtained. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: This study investigated overall performance of an energy-absorbing sliding seat concept for whiplash neck injury prevention. The sliding seat allows its seat pan to slide backward for some distance under certain restraint force to absorb crash energy in rear impacts.Methods: A numerical model that consisted of vehicle interior, seat, seat belt, and BioRID II dummy was built in MADYMO to evaluate whiplash neck injury in rear impact. A parametric study of the effects of sliding seat parameters, including position and cushion stiffness of head restraint, seatback cushion stiffness, recliner characteristics, and especially sliding energy-absorbing (EA) restraint force, on neck injury criteria was conducted in order to compare the effectiveness of the sliding seat concept with that of other existing anti-whiplash mechanisms. Optimal sliding seat design configurations in rear crashes of different severities were obtained. A sliding seat prototype with bending of a steel strip as an EA mechanism was fabricated and tested in a sled test environment to validate the concept. The performance of the sliding seat under frontal and rollover impacts was checked to make sure the sliding mechanism did not result in any negative effects.Results: The protective effect of the sliding seat with EA restraint force is comparable to that of head restraint-based and recliner stiffness-based anti-whiplash mechanisms. EA restraint force levels of 3 kN in rear impacts of low and medium severities and 6 kN in impacts of high severity were obtained from optimization. In frontal collision and rollover, compared to the nonsliding seat, the sliding seat does not result in any negative effects on occupant protection. The sled test results of the sliding seat prototype have shown the effectiveness of the concept for reducing neck injury risks.Conclusion: As a countermeasure, the sliding seat with appropriate restraint forces can significantly reduce whiplash neck injury risk in rear impacts of low, medium, and high severities with no negative effects on other crash load cases. Objective: Acceleration-based injury metrics can be useful for quantitatively evaluating risk of concussion (a form of mild traumatic brain injury, or mTBI) after automobile collisions, especially when objective medical findings may be negative, as in many cases of concussion. In the present study, head acceleration data were used to evaluate the risk of concussion or more serious head injury to the driver of an automobile that experiences a rear impact resulting in a forward change in velocity (delta-V) of 15.5 km/h (9.6 mph).Methods: Data were collected from 34 Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) rear impact sled tests conducted from 2009 through 2017 for driver seats from 10 passenger car models leading in U.S. sales in 2017. Resultant translational head acceleration data were used to compute the head injury criterion (HIC; HIC15, HIC36) and A-3ms (the 3-ms resultant acceleration criterion utilized by the European New Car Assessment Protocol and others), and maximum resultant translational acceleration (aT). Maximum resultant rotational acceleration (aR) was estimated based on Biofidelic Rear Impact Dummy (BioRID) data from Welch et al. ( 2010 ).Results: No sled test included in the study resulted in a HIC15 value exceeding 55, a HIC36 value exceeding 85, A-3ms exceeding 28 g, aT exceeding 28 g, or estimated aR exceeding 1,400 rad/s2. These values are far below published automotive injury risk values (IARV) used to evaluate crashworthiness. Further, contemporary concussion risk curves place the HIC15, aT, aR, and paired combination of aT and aR sustained by the BioRID anthropomorphic test dummy (ATD) in the IIHS tests at a negligible risk of concussion (mTBI).Conclusions: The 15.5 km/h delta-V IIHS rear impact sled tests conducted between 2009 and 2017 for common passenger automobile driver seats resulted in injury metrics associated with minimal risk of concussion or more severe head injuries. The ride comfort of a vehicle is a vital aspect determining competitiveness of vehicles. The comfort is intricately related to feelings of discomfort due to vibration. The discomfort depends on various dynamic aspects of the suspension-seat and surrounding system. In industry, the discomfort due to vibration is assessed by road testing on various surfaces; these road tests may not be accurately repeatable. Discomfort, in general, can be assessed by measurements based on a shaker table and seat combination. These results when used for "in vehicle situations" may not accurately indicate the level of human discomfort in a vehicle. In view of this, to quantify seated human discomfort in a vehicle, measurements were performed using a four-post rig simulator; the setup allows controlled in-situ experiments to be conducted. A group of six subjects were exposed to sinusoidal vibration at five magnitudes in the vertical direction for heave, roll and pitch motion. The objective is to develop a discomfort metric which could be used to compare vehicles. The preliminary results show varying significance of roll, pitch and heave motion. The results, however, confirm the nonlinear variation of perception as a function of the physical stimulus. The test setup can be used to study the effects of complex road inputs and eventually may contribute towards reduced reliance on road tests. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Driver posture is an important factor to be considered in the ergonomics design process of automobiles. Most decisions during automobile design and manufacture are informed by studying the intricate biomechanical components of human musculoskeletal systems to ensure maximum comfort, safety and well-being during driving. A case study is presented that confirms inappropriate foot position as a causative factor for the development of abnormal lateral/plantar heel callosities when driving a 4 × 4-style vehicle. The driver's foot position was influenced by the seat geometry of the vehicle. Cessation of driving the 4 × 4-style vehicle and driving of an alternative automobile while on holiday for a period of 4 weeks resolved the condition. On return to the 4 × 4-style vehicle, however, the abnormal callus patterns redeveloped while using the same footwear and no change in any other parameters. It is therefore suggested that seat and consequent foot position is an important ergonomic factor that should be addressed in the future design of automobile seating. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article discusses the nonlinear characteristics of typical automotive seat cushion structures. The experimental transfer functions between the seat butt and the seat track show that the magnitude and frequency decrease as the excitation increases. This indicates that the structure has both nonlinear stiffness and nonlinear damping. The article develops two nonlinear models for seat cushion structures and the linear and nonlinear terms are compared and analysed in both the models. A Recursive Least Squares method is used to identify the nonlinear parameters. The transfer functions obtained by the analytical models compared very well with those obtained experimentally.
