Bank Indonesia surprised economists by raising its benchmark interest rate to a record high of 6.25% in an effort to stabilize the rupiah against the dollar. The rate hike is aimed at guiding the rupiah below 16,000 against the dollar by the end of the year. The central bank also plans to increase its foreign exchange interventions and allow money-market rates to rise to attract more foreign inflows. The rupiah has lost nearly 5% against the dollar this year, and Bank Indonesia expects it to stabilize around 16,200 in the second quarter and strengthen to an average of 16,000 in the third quarter.
