Although previous related studies illustrate several factors that reduce and eliminate ecological pollution, empirical evidence that examines the impact of banking development on footprint ecological quality is missed. This study explores the impact of banking development, renewable energy consumption, and economic growth on the ecological footprint of 27 OECD countries spanning data from 1990 to 2018. Using the method of moments quantile regression (MMQR), the results indicated that a 1% increase in banking expansion is projected to augment the ecological footprint in the OECD nations across all quantiles (first to ninth). Thus, the results affirm that banking development dampens ecological sustainability in the OECD nations. In contrast, the results indicate that renewable energy promotes ecological sustainability in the OECD nations across all quantiles (first to ninth). The empirical findings suggest that OECD policymakers should regard banking and economic development as a "green energy fostering mechanism" while designing policies to promote ecological friend energy sources. Moreover, as part of their core mandates, central banks, and regulatory authorities should promote financial innovation in the banking sector to mobilize the required capital to facilitate nature conservation and restoration. In order to define and implement the most effective measures to overcome the difficulties of the post-crisis period, the policy-makers of ECB must identify not just main weaknesses of each banking system, but their strong points also. This requires the application of multi-criteria analysis, considering that policy-makers need to take into account a number of different aspects that, on the whole, indicate the quality of the banking system. Our aim is a comparative analysis of European banking systems right after the Brexit moment and within the framework of the tight new Basel III regulations. In this paper, we have ranked the banking systems of the 28 EU member states using multi-criteria analysis, specifically the PROMETHEE II method. The use of the PROMETHEE II method in combination with the entropy method offers a comprehensive insight into the banking system of each member state, given that the observed countries are ranked according to 9 conflicting criteria that are mostly used in banking system analysis. Our analysis shows that the banking systems in Central and Eastern Europe are the best performers, while the EMU’s developed banking systems such as the German, Italian, British, and French one are positioned among the last ranked. The Portuguese and Greek banking systems are, as expected, ranked in the last positions in our list. The Romanian cards market relaunched after the crisis period, because the credit diminished or even stoped during 2008-2013, so the banks had to rely on the fees granted by issued cards or by banking payments operations. The global financial shock had symmetrical effects across the Eurozone: the cross-border financial flows decreased in 2008, and the investors repatriated the funds towards home markets and re-evaluated the level of their international exposure. In the banking area, large mergers and aquisitions took place before the crisis and large banking group were created. This concentration process in the banking sector continued in the crisis context, because the banks performance dropped signifiantly. The Romanian banking system was less affected by the crisis, since it was not exposed to toxic assets, as well as due to the prudential and administrative measures adopted by the National Bank of Romania. Still, for Romania, but alsofor the entire Europe, the danger didn't dissapeared. The Greek situation and the Ukrainian conflict represent a challenge for the achieved stability in the European area.
