This study deals with two different aspects of the high-strength low-alloyed 1100 MC steel. The first is associated with the remarkable heterogeneity (linked with surface decarburization) in the surface state produced during sheet rolling with respect to the sheet width. The variable thickness surface layer exhibits a microstructure different from that of the deeper bulk. Variation in the thickness of the thermally softened near-surface region strongly affects Barkhausen noise as well. This technique can be considered a reliable tool for monitoring the aforementioned heterogeneity. It can also be reported that the opposite sides of the sheet are different with respect to the surface state, the heterogeneity distribution, and the corresponding Barkhausen noise. These aspects indicate different conditions during hot rolling followed by rapid quenching on the upper and lower rollers. Furthermore, it was found that the degree of decarburizing and the corresponding surface heterogeneity is also a function of C content, and steels with lower C content exhibit less pronounced surface heterogeneity. The second aspect is related to the remarkable asymmetry in Barkhausen noise emission with respect to two consecutive bursts. This asymmetry is due to the presence of remnant magnetization in the sheet produced during manufacturing. The remnant magnetization is coupled to the magnetic field produced by the excitation coil of the Barkhausen noise sensor and strongly contributes to the aforementioned asymmetry. The remnant magnetization attenuates the domain wall mobility, which results in weaker Barkhausen noise. Moreover, the Barkhausen noise envelopes and the extracted features such as the position of the envelope maximum and its width are strongly affected by the remnant magnetization. Insufficient demagnetization makes the body magnetically softer and makes a wider range of magnetic fields in which Barkhausen noise emission can be detected. As soon as sufficient removal of this remnant magnetization is carried out in the vanishing magnetic field (demagnetization), the aforementioned remarkable asymmetry is fully lost. Low alloyed steels of low, medium, or high strength are frequently used for many applications in the automotive, civil (bridges), aerospace, and petrochemical industries. A variety of thermomechanical regimes, in which these steels can be produced, enable customization of their matrix with respect to their fatigue resistance, resistance against friction and impact wear, fracture toughness, corrosion resistance, etc. This study analyses the influence of magnetising conditions on Barkhausen noise and other extracted parameters. It was found that the increasing magnetising frequency makes Barkhausen noise weaker, especially in the high strength low alloyed steels, as a result of the decreasing magnetic field in a sample. For this reason, increasing fraction of domain walls is unpinned at the higher frequencies. Barkhausen noise for the high strength low alloyed steels at higher frequencies is remarkably attenuated. Moreover, the different behaviour with respect to direction of the sheet rolling and the transversal direction, can be found due to realignment of the domain walls. This study demonstrates that the position of Barkhausen noise envelopes and the number of Barkhausen noise pulses increase in a systematic manner at the lower magnetising frequencies. Those parameters can be employed for distinction of the low alloyed steels, investigated in this study. However, the increasing magnetising frequency makes attenuation of Barkhausen noise more remarkable for the low alloyed steels of the higher strength. Therefore, the effective value of Barkhausen noise, at the magnetising frequency 750 Hz, in the rolling direction exhibits the systematic descent along with the increasing yield strength. This paper investigates the rate of transformation induced plasticity in TRIP steel (TRansformation-Induced Plasticity) after plastic straining by the use of Barkhausen noise emission. The samples were subjected to a variable degree of plastic straining and analysed by the use of conventional techniques such SEM, XRD, as well as microhardness in order to investigate residual stress and microstructural alterations initiated by the uniaxial tensile test. Barkhausen noise emission is analysed as a function of plastic straining as well as in the direction of the exerted load and interpreted with respect to the aforementioned microstructure and stress alterations. It was found that Barkhausen noise markedly decreases along with increasing plastic straining, up to 20%, followed by a strain region in which the evolution of Barkhausen noise reaches saturation. Samples after the tensile test exhibited marked magnetic anisotropy since the Barkhausen noise emission in the direction perpendicular to the tensile stress remained less affected. Apart from the effective value of Barkhausen noise, the Barkhausen noise envelopes were also analysed. • Barkhausen noise in TRIP steel exhibits steep decrease at low plastic strains. • Barkhausen noise evolution is sensitive to the rate of austenite decomposition. • Higher plastic strains increase magnetic hardness of TRIP steel. The usability of the magnetic Barkhausen noise (MBN) technique for monitoring the critical state of plastic straining in the case of interstitial free (IF) steel is demonstrated. IF steels are frequently employed in the automotive industry (e.g., automotive body parts—doors, trunks, wheel arches, etc.), and rupture of components made of these steels occurs during cold forming. Alteration of microstructure expressed in many terms and the corresponding MBN features after the variable degree of plastic strains developed by the uniaxial tensile loading are investigated. It is reported that the effective value of MBN, as well as the shift of MBN envelopes toward higher magnetic fields, can be proposed as the suitable MBN features alerting the incoming matrix breakage. This study deals with corrosion damage of low alloyed feritic steels of variable strength. Three different steels of nominal yield strength 235, 700 and 1100 MPa were subjected to the variable degree of corrosion attack developed in the corrosion chamber under a neutral salt spray (NSS) atmosphere. The corrosion damage was investigated by the use of conventional metallographic observations when the thickness of corroded layer was quantified. Moreover, non-destructive magnetic technique, based on Barkhausen noise, was also employed. It was found that the rate of corrosion damage decreases along with the increasing number of days in the chamber. The similar evolution can be also found for Barkhausen noise emission and the extracted parameters from the emission. It can be reported that conventional rms value of Barkhausen noise signal as well as FWHM (full width at half maximum of Barkhausen noise envelope) can be linked with the corrosion extent, especially in the early phases of corrosion attack. This study investigates alterations in magnetic anisotropy and the marked asymmetry in Barkhausen noise (MBN) signals after the uniaxial plastic straining of steel S235 obtained from a shipyard and used as standard structural steel in shipbuilding. It was found that the initial easy axis of magnetisation in the direction of previous rolling, and also in the direction of loading, becomes the hard axis of magnetisation as soon as the plastic strain attains the critical threshold. This behaviour is due to the preferential matrix orientation and the corresponding realignment of the magneto-crystalline anisotropy. Apart from the angular dependence of MBN, the asymmetry in the consecutive MBN bursts at the lower plastic strains is also analysed and explained as a result of magnetic coupling between the grains plastically strained and those unaffected by the tensile test. It was found that, by increasing the degree of plastic strain, the marked asymmetry in MBN tends to vanish. Moreover, the asymmetry in MBN bursts occurs in the direction of uniaxial tension and disappears in the perpendicular direction. This study deals with monitoring of Zn layer heterogeneity on the flange of steel road barriers using magnetic measurements. The Barkhausen noise technique is employed for such purpose, and parameters extracted from Barkhausen noise signals are correlated with the true thickness of the Zn layer. The true values of the Zn layer were obtained from the metallographic images, as well as the thickness gauge CM-8825FN (Guangzhou Landtek Instruments Co. Ltd., Guangzhou, China) device. It was observed that the diffusion region lies below the Zn protective layer, which makes the thickness of the Zn layer obtained from the CM-8825FN device thicker than that measured on the metallographic images. For this reason, the chemical gradient of Zn below the Zn layer can be reported, and it affects Barkhausen noise emission. Barkhausen noise decreases along with increasing thickness of the Zn layer, and Barkhausen noise envelopes are shifted to stronger magnetic fields. The number of strong MBN pulses drops down with the increasing thickness of Zn coating at the expense of the increasing number of the weak MBN pulses. The thickness of Zn coating can be polluted by the solidification of Zn melt after galvanizing. The presence of the diffusion layer dims the contrast between ferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases. This paper investigates the potential of a non-destructive magnetic technique based on Barkhausen noise emission for the monitoring of prestressing bars with respect to their undesired over-stressing. Barkhausen noise signals are correlated with tensile stress, residual stresses, and microhardness measurements. It was found that prestressing bars exhibit strong magnetic anisotropy which becomes more pronounced along with the increasing degree of the bar's over-stressing. Barkhausen noise emission becomes strongly attenuated in the direction of the tensile stress at the expense of the perpendicular direction. However, the Barkhausen noise emission in the direction of the tensile stress exhibits a continuous and remarkable decrease, whereas the Barkhausen noise steep increase for lower degrees of over-stressing is followed by early saturation for higher over-stressing. This study demonstrates that the Barkhausen noise technique is capable of distinguishing between the prestressing bars loaded below yielding, and those which are over-stressed. Monitoring of the stress state of bridges by the use of the Barkhausen noise technique has been already introduced and this method can be adapted for monitoring of component's overstressing. Measurement of Barkhausen noise on real bridges is carried out through the coating applied as a layer to increase the corrosion resistance of bodies. However, it was found that the thickness of the coating could vary, which in turn affects the Barkhausen noise signals and makes it difficult to assess the real stress state. For this reason, this paper deals with attenuation of Barkhausen noise emission due to variable thicknesses of coatings on the steel S460MC. It was found that increasing the thickness progressively decreases the Barkhausen noise emission and shifts the Barkhausen noise envelopes to the higher magnetic fields. This study investigates the microstructure, residual stress state, and the corresponding magnetic anisotropy of the ship structure samples made of S235 steel after uniaxial tensile deformation. A non-destructive magnetic technique based on Barkhausen noise is employed for fast and reliable monitoring of samples exposed to the variable degrees of plastic straining. It was found that the progressively developed plastic straining of the matrix results in an alteration of the easy axis of magnetization, stress anisotropy (expressed in residual stresses state) as well as the corresponding Barkhausen noise emission. Steel rope wires represent the main bearing components of bridges whose long-term operation depends on loading conditions, corrosion attack, and/or pre-stressing. Corrosion attack especially can remarkably reduce the effective cross-sectional area, which in turn over-stresses the wires and redistributes stress to the neighboring wires. The premature collapse of many bridges is very often caused by wire rupture as a result of their poor corrosion protection. For these reasons, various processes—such as galvanizing, phosphating, etc.—have been applied to steel wires to increase their resistance against corrosion. However, these processes can alter the microstructure, especially in the near-surface regions. The Barkhausen noise technique has been already reported as a suitable technique for investigating corrosion extent and true pre-stress in the steel rope wires. This study reports that non-homogeneity of the surface state of wires undergoing different surface treatment makes it more difficult to assess the true stress state and increase the uncertainty of Barkhausen noise measurement. Barkhausen noise signals are correlated with metallographic and SEM observations as well as microhardness measurements.
