The thermal modification of wood in a nitrogen atmosphere shapes the functional properties of wood. The aim of this research was to determine the influence of different levels of temperature and the duration of thermal modification on the mechanical properties of the black poplar (Populus nigra L.). Black poplar was thermally modified in nitrogen atmosphere in the temperature range from 160 °C to 220 °C (6 levels) for 2 h to 8 h (4 levels), resulting in a total of 24 treatments. The effect of these treatments on compressive strength parallel to the grain (CS), modulus of rupture (MOR), and modulus of elasticity during bending (MOE) were analyzed. Thermal modification influenced the mechanical properties of black poplar wood. After thermal modification occurred in a nitrogen atmosphere, an increase in compressive strength was noticeable for all variants of black poplar wood modification. The highest 16% increase in CS was obtained for the modification carried out at the temperature of 160 °C and for 2 h. An increase was also found for MOE when modified under mild conditions, while a decrease occurred for variants at higher temperatures, i.e., for 200 °C and 220 °C. Oak (Quercus robur L.), iroko (Milicia excelsa (Welw.) C.C. Berg), and tauari (Couratari spp.) wood were subjected to cyclic thermo-mechanical treatment (CTMT). The densification temperature amounted to 100 °C or 150 °C. The greatest changes in the modulus of rupture (MOR) value of the iroko wood, depending on the number of thermo-mechanical modification cycles, were noted. The MOR of the iroko wood, densified at 100 °C or 150 °C, after second thermo-mechanical modification cycle was twice as high as before the modification. No significant differences were observed between the modulus of elasticity (MOE) of oak wood before and after one modification cycle. Similar dependencies were noted in iroko wood. The thermo-mechanical modification performed over two cycles led to the highest increase, by about 56%, in MOE in oak wood densified at 150 °C. It was demonstrated that modification at 150 °C had a negative impact on iroko wood, which was manifested in the lower compression ratio of iroko at 150 °C than at 100 °C. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Oriental arborvitae is not fully characterized in terms of its microscopic structure or physical or mechanical properties. Moreover, there is a lot of contradictory information in the literature about oriental arborvitae, especially in terms of microscopic structure. Therefore, the sapwood (S) and heartwood (H) of Platycladus orientalis (L.) Franco from Central Europe were subjected to examinations. The presence of helical thickenings was found in earlywood tracheids (E). Latewood tracheids (L) were characterized by a similar thickness of radial and tangential walls and a similar diameter in the tangential direction in the sapwood and heartwood zones. In the case of earlywood tracheids, such a similarity was found only in the thickness of the tangential walls. The volume swelling (VS) of sapwood and heartwood after reaching maximum moisture content (MMC) was 12.8% (±0.5%) and 11.2% (±0.5%), respectively. The average velocity of ultrasonic waves along the fibers (υ) for a frequency of 40 kHz was about 6% lower in the heartwood zone than in the sapwood zone. The dynamic modulus of elasticity (MOED) was about 8% lower in the heartwood zone than in the sapwood zone. These differences, both in the case of υ and MOED, were statistically significant. However, no statistically significant differences were found for the static bending strength (MOR, approx. 90 MPa), modulus of elasticity at static bending (MOE, approx. 4800 MPa), or compression strength parallel to the grain (CS, approx. 47 MPa) in relation to the wood zone (sapwood, heartwood).
