Objective: To evaluate the effect of intravenous (IV) ceftriaxone on free bilirubin concentrations in infants with unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia born at term., Study Design: A prospective study was performed with subjects serving as their own controls. Our inclusion criteria were infants born at term <7 days old with sepsis and receiving IV antibiotics for >3 days and resolving hyperbilirubinemia with total serum bilirubin levels between 6 and12 mg/dL by day 4 of life. Free bilirubin concentrations were measured by the peroxidase method using a UB analyzer and a Zone Fluidics device before (baseline) and 15 minutes after (follow-up) IV ceftriaxone administration on postnatal days 4 to 6. Paired measurements of free bilirubin were analyzed using a Student paired t-test or Wilcoxon signed-rank test., Results: In total, 27 infants were studied. The mean free bilirubin (μg/dL) at follow-up was not different from that at baseline when measured by the UB analyzer (P = .78). The mean free bilirubin was significantly lower at follow-up compared with baseline when measured by the Zone Fluidics device (P = .02). The ratio of a free bilirubin with and without ceftriaxone, an index of displacing effect, was 1.02 (95% CI 0.89-1.14) using the UB analyzer and 0.58 (95% CI 0.30-0.86) using the Zone Fluidics device., Conclusions: Ceftriaxone is not associated with a bilirubin-displacing effect in infants with a mild unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia. Home therapy with once-daily intramuscular ceftriaxone may be an alternative option for management of sepsis in asymptomatic infants with a mild unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia born at term., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier Inc. Hyperbilirubinemia is a serious hazard to human health due to its neurotoxicity and lethality. So far, successful therapy for hyperbilirubinemia with fewer side effects is still lacking. In this study, we aimed to clarify the effects of oridonin (Ori), an active diterpenoid extracted from Rabdosia rubescens, on hyperbilirubinemia and revealed the underlying molecular mechanism in vivo and in vitro. Here, we showed that liver X receptor alpha (LXRα) deletion eliminated the protective effect of Ori on phenylhydrazine hydrochloride-induced hyperbilirubinemia mice, indicating that LXRα acted as a key target for Ori treatment of hyperbilirubinemia. Ori significantly increased the expression of LXRα and UDP-glucuronosyltransferase 1A1 (UGT1A1) in the liver of wild-type (WT) mice, which were lost in LXRα -/- mice. Ori or LXR agonist GW3965 also reduced lipopolysaccharide/D-galactosamine-induced hyperbilirubinemia via activating LXRα/UGT1A1 in WT mice. Liver UGT1A1 enzyme activity was elevated by Ori or GW3965 in WT mice. Further, Ori up-regulated LXRα gene expression, increased its nuclear translocation and stimulated UGT1A1 promoter activity in HepG2 cells. After silencing LXRα by siRNA, Ori-induced UGT1A1 expression was markedly reduced in HepG2 cells and primary mouse hepatocytes. Taken together, Ori stimulated the transcriptional activity of LXRα, resulting in the up-regulation of UGT1A1. Therefore, Ori or its analogs might have the potential to treat hyperbilirubinemia-related diseases through modulating LXRα-UGT1A1 signaling., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.)

Hyperbilirubinemia is the most frequent clinical problem neonatologists must deal with during the newborn period. It has been suggested that bilirubin is involved in the balance between antioxidant and pro-oxidant agents due to its antioxidant properties. However, the relevance of these effects in vivo in term and preterm infants is still debated. We performed a literature review of studies that investigated the association between total serum bilirubin (TSB) and oxidative stress in newborn infants. We found that studies in term infants give contradictory results, while studies in preterm infants suggest that the TSB increase is associated with an oxidative stress increase due to concurrent factors other than bilirubin level, such as heme oxygenase (HO) activity. Moreover, it could be speculated that low physiologic TSB values are associated with antioxidant effects, while high pathologic TSB values are associated with pro-oxidant effects. Literature data do not allow the establishment of whether if the antioxidant properties of bilirubin are important from a clinical point of view and can affect the outcome in ill infants.

No effective medication for hyperbilirubinemia yet exists. Taurine is believed to exert a neuroprotective action. The aim of the present study was to determine whether taurine protected neurons of the rat anteroventral cochlear nucleus (AVCN) against bilirubin-induced neuronal hyperexcitation. AVCN neurons were isolated from 13 to 15-day-old Sprague-Dawley rats. The effects of bilirubin on the spontaneous excitatory postsynaptic currents (sEPSCs) and action potential currents were compared with those exerted by bilirubin and taurine together. Bilirubin dramatically increased the frequencies of sEPSCs and action potential currents, but not sEPSC amplitude. Taurine suppressed the enhanced frequency of action potentials induced by bilirubin, in a dose-dependent manner. In addition, taurine decreased the amplitude of voltage-dependent calcium channel currents that were enhanced upon addition of bilirubin. We explored the mechanism of the protective effects exerted by taurine using GABAA and glycine receptor antagonists, bicuculline and strychnine, respectively. Addition of bicuculline and strychnine eliminated the protective effects of taurine. Neither bilirubin nor taurine affected the sensitivity of the glutamate receptor. Our findings thus indicate that taurine protected AVCN neurons against bilirubin-induced neuronal hyperexcitation by activating the GABAA and glycine receptors and inhibiting calcium flow through voltage-gated channels. Background: Phenylhydrazine, a hemolytic agent, is widely used as a model of experimental hyperbilirubinemia. Palm tocotrienol-rich fraction (TRF) was shown to exert beneficial effects in hyperbilirubinemic rat neonates., Aim: To investigate the effects of palm TRF supplementation on hepatic bilirubin-metabolizing enzymes and oxidative stress status in rats administered phenylhydrazine., Methods: Twenty-four male Wistar rats were divided into two groups; one group was intraperitoneally injected with palm TRF at the dose of 30 mg/kg/day, while another group was only given vehicle (control) (vitamin E-free palm oil) for 14 days. Twenty-four hours after the last dose, each group was further subdivided into another two groups. One group was administered phenylhydrazine (100 mg/kg, intraperitoneally) and another group was administered normal saline. Twenty-four hours later, blood and liver were collected for biochemical parameter measurements., Results: Phenylhydrazine increased plasma total bilirubin level and oxidative stress in the erythrocytes as well as in the liver, which were reduced by the pretreatment of palm TRF. Palm TRF also prevented the increases in hepatic heme oxygenase, biliverdin reductase and UDP-glucuronyltransferase activities induced by phenylhydrazine., Conclusion: Palm tocotrienol-rich fraction was able to afford protection against phenylhydrazine-induced hyperbilirubinemia, possibly by reducing oxidative stress and inhibiting bilirubin-metabolizing enzymes in the liver.

Background: Free bilirubin (Bf), the unbound fraction of unconjugated bilirubin (UCB), can induce neurotoxicity, including impairment of the auditory system, which can be assessed by brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs). We hypothesized that albumin might reduce the risk of neurotoxicity by decreasing Bf and its translocation into the brain., Aim: To determine the effects of albumin on BAEPs and brain bilirubin content in two Gunn rat pup models of acute hyperbilirubinemia., Methods: We used Gunn rat pups, which have a deficiency of the bilirubin-conjugating enzyme UGT1A1. We induced haemolysis by injection of phenylhydrazine (phz) into 14-days old pups. Subsequently, pups were treated with either i.p. human serum albumin (HSA; 2.5 g/kg; n = 8) or saline (control, n = 8). We induced acute neurotoxicity by injecting 16-days old pups with sulphadimethoxine (sulpha) and treated them with either HSA (n = 9) or saline (control, n = 10). To assess bilirubin neurotoxicity, we used the validated BAEP method and compared relevant parameters; i.e. peak latency values and interwave interval (IWI) between peak I and peak II, a marker of acute neurotoxicity., Results: Phz and sulpha significantly increased IWI I-II by 26% and 29% (P < 0.05) in the haemolysis and the displacement model, respectively. Albumin completely prevented the increase of IWI I-II in either model. The beneficial effect of albumin in the displacement-model by means of normal BAEPs was in line with less bilirubin in the brain (NS). Interestingly, in the haemolysis model the accumulation of total bilirubin in the brain was unaltered, and BAEPs still appeared normal. This might advocate for a role of brain Bf which was calculated and showed that albumin treatment non-significantly reduces Bf concentrations in brain, compared with saline treatment., Conclusions: Albumin treatment is neuroprotective in acute hyperbilirubinemia in Gunn rat pups. Background: 4Z,15Z-bilirubin-IXα (BR), an endogenous toxic compound that is sparingly soluble in water, binds human serum albumin (HSA) with high affinity in a flexible manner. Our previous findings suggest that both Lys195 and Lys199 in subdomain IIA are important for the high-affinity binding of BR, and especially Lys199 in stand-alone domain II plays a prominent role in the renal elimination of BR. Our hypothesis is that HSA-domain II with high BR binding would be a useful therapeutic agent to treat hyperbilirubinemia in patients with impaired liver function., Methods: Unbound BR concentrations were determined using a modified HRP assay. To evaluate the effect of pan3&#95;3-13 domain II mutant in promoting urinary BR excretion, the serum concentration and urinary excretion amount of BR were determined using bile duct ligation mice., Results: After three or six rounds of panning, pan3&#95;3-13 and pan6&#95;4 were found to have a significantly higher affinity for BR than wild-type domain II. Administration of pan3&#95;3-13 significantly reduced serum BR level and increased its urinary excretion in the disease model mice as compared to wild-type domain II treatment., Conclusions: These results suggest that pan3&#95;3-13 has great potential as a therapeutic agent that promotes urinary BR excretion in hyperbilirubinemia., General Significance: This is the first study to be applied to other HSA bound toxic compounds that are responsible for the progression of disease, thereby paving the way for the development of non-invasive and cost effective blood purification treatment methods., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier B.V. Although a large number of in vitro and in vivo tests have confirmed that taking probiotics can improve the intestinal barrier, few studies have focused on the relationship between probiotics and the intestinal epithelial barrier in hyperbilirubinaemia. To investigate the effects of and mechanisms associated with probiotic bacteria (Lactobacillus plantarum; LP) and unconjugated bilirubin (UCB) on the intestinal epithelial barrier, we measured the viability, apoptotic ratio and protein kinase C (PKC) activity of Caco-2 cells. We also determined the distribution and expression of tight junction proteins such as occludin, zonula occludens (ZO)-1, claudin-1, claudin-4, junctional adhesion molecule (JAM)-1 and F-actin using confocal laser scanning microscopy, immunohistochemistry, Western blotting and real-time quantitative PCR. The present study demonstrated that high concentrations of UCB caused obvious cytotoxicity and decreased the transepithelial electrical resistance (TER) of the Caco-2 cell monolayer. Low concentrations of UCB inhibited the expression of tight junction proteins and PKC but could induce UDP-glucuronosyltransferases 1 family-polypeptide A1 (UGT1A1) expression. UCB alone caused decreased PKC activity, serine phosphorylated occludin and ZO-1 levels. After treatment with LP, the effects of UCB on TER and apoptosis were mitigated; LP also prevented aberrant expression and rearrangement of tight junction proteins. Moreover, PKC activity and serine phosphorylated tight junction protein levels were partially restored after treatment with LP, LP exerted a protective effect against UCB damage to Caco-2 monolayer cells, and it restored the structure and distribution of tight junction proteins by activating the PKC pathway. In addition, UGT1A1 expression induced by UCB in Caco-2 cells could ameliorate the cytotoxicity of UCB.

The endothelium of the brain microvessels and the choroid plexus epithelium form highly specialized cellular barriers referred to as blood-brain interfaces through which molecular exchanges take place between the blood and the neuropil or the cerebrospinal fluid, respectively. Within the brain, the ependyma and the pia-glia limitans modulate exchanges between the neuropil and the cerebrospinal fluid. All these interfaces are key elements of neuroprotection and fulfill trophic functions; both properties are critical to harmonious brain development and maturation. By analogy to hepatic bilirubin detoxification pathways, we review the transport and metabolic mechanisms which in all these interfaces may participate in the regulation of bilirubin cerebral bioavailability in physiologic conditions, both in adult and in developing brain. We specifically address the role of ABC and OATP transporters, glutathione-S-transferases, and the potential involvement of glucuronoconjugation and oxidative metabolic pathways. Regulatory mechanisms are explored which are involved in the induction of these pathways and represent potential pharmacological targets to prevent bilirubin accumulation into the brain. We then review the possible alteration of the neuroprotective and trophic barrier functions in the course of bilirubin-induced neurological dysfunctions resulting from hyperbilirubinemia. Finally, we highlight the role of the blood-brain and blood-CSF barriers in regulating the brain biodisposition of candidate drugs for the treatment or prevention of bilirubin-induced brain injury.

Hyperbilirubinemia is a common condition in neonatal life, where elevated levels of unconjugated bilirubin (UCB) may lead to adverse neurologic outcomes, namely in the presence of inflammatory features. In this review, we summarize recent concepts on UCB damage to brain cells and associated neuroinflammation research. Exposure of astrocytes and microglia to UCB initiates an inflammatory response with the release of proinflammatory cytokines, such as TNF-alpha, IL-1beta and IL-6, accumulation of extracellular glutamate and a time-dependent cell death. Moreover, undifferentiated cells revealed to be particularly susceptible to UCB-induced immunostimulation pointing to a mechanism that may preside to the vulnerability evidenced by premature newborns. Evaluation of intracellular mechanisms of astrocyte and microglia to UCB revealed that TNF-alpha and IL-1beta pathways as well as MAPK and NF-kappaB signaling cascades are key mediators of both cytokine production and cell toxicity observed upon UCB challenge. Understanding these mechanisms is essential for the development of new strategies targeting UCB-induced neurotoxicity. Thus, a therapeutic approach for the prevention or amelioration of neurological deficits resulting from moderate to severe hyperbilirubinemia, may consist on the use of immunomodulators, such as IL-10 that showed ability to suppress the release of cytokines from astrocytes exposed to UCB, glycoursodeoxycholic acid (GUDCA) that abrogated both UCB-stimulated cytokine secretion and UCB-induced loss of cell survival, and minocycline that evidenced a unique role in preventing neurodegeneration in in vitro and in vivo models. Novel pharmacological strategies may reduce the incidence of UCB encephalopathy and prevent minor cerebral lesions that may result in mental illness.

Objectives: Intestinal metabolism of bilirubin is implicated in the pathogenesis of neonatal jaundice and Crigler-Najjar syndrome. In the present study the authors investigated the effect of oral administration of zinc salts on serum bilirubin levels in hyperbilirubinemic rats., Methods: Bilirubin-binding activities of zinc sulfate and water-insoluble zinc methacrylate were determined in vitro. Congenitally hyperbilirubinemic Gunn rats and artificially hyperbilirubinemic Wistar rats were used in in vivo studies. Animals were fed a normal diet for 1 week and then a treatment diet of either zinc sulfate or zinc methacrylate for additional 2 weeks. Serum and fecal bile pigments were determined at the end of each phase. Biliary bilirubin secretion rates were determined in hyperbilirubinemic Wistar rats fed zinc methacrylate., Results: Substantial bilirubin-binding activities of zinc salts were demonstrated in in vitro experiments. Treatment with oral zinc salts significantly decreased serum bilirubin levels in Gunn rats (166 +/- 53 versus 123 +/- 38 and 206 +/- 34 versus 131 +/- 31 micromol/L, P < 0.05 for zinc methacrylate and zinc sulfate, respectively). A similar effect of zinc methacrylate was also observed in hyperbilirubinemic Wistar rats (102 +/- 10 versus 14 +/- 4 micromol/L, P < 0.0001). In accord, biliary bilirubin secretion decreased significantly in these animals (45 +/- 11 versus 28 +/- 4 nmol/h 100g body weight, P < 0.02). In contrast to zinc sulfate, treatment with zinc methacrylate did not lead to the elevation of serum zinc levels., Conclusions: Oral administration of zinc salts efficiently decreased serum bilirubin levels in hyperbilirubinemic rats, presumably as a result of inhibition of enterohepatic circulation of bilirubin. This approach might be useful in the treatment of severe unconjugated hyperbilirubinemias.

Objective: To determine whether serum levels of unconjugated bilirubin (UCB) can be decreased by enhancing fecal fat excretion., Study Design: Gunn rats were fed a high-fat diet (control) or the same diet mixed with the lipase inhibitor orlistat. At regular intervals, plasma UCB concentrations were determined and 72-hour fat balances were performed., Results: Orlistat treatment decreased plasma UCB concentrations (at 3 weeks; 100 mg/kg, -33%+/-8%, P<.05; 200 mg/kg, -46%+/-10%, P<.01). Within days of treatment, orlistat treatment increased fecal excretion of UCB (at day 3; +220%, P<.05). During 24 weeks of orlistat treatment (200 mg/kg diet), the plasma bilirubin concentrations were continuously approximately 35% lower than in control rats. Plasma UCB concentrations were inversely correlated with the amount of fecal fat excretion (n=12, r=-0.87, P<.001)., Conclusions: In Gunn rats, orlistat treatment increases the fecal excretion of fat and enhances the disposal of UCB. This approach could lead to novel strategies for prevention and treatment of unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia in patients.

Objective: To prepare rat heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) mutants and to determine the activity and inhibition of this mutated enzyme., Methods: pcDNA3HO1 containing truncated native rat HO-1 cDNA and pcDNA3HO1 delta 25 carrying mutated rat HO-1 cDNA (His25Ala) were constructed, respectively. COS-1 cells transfected with pcDNA3HO1 and pcDNA3HO1 delta 25 were collected and their activities were analyzed., Results: Native rat HO-1 was highly expressed in transfected cells and its activity was 13,688-15,600 U/mg protein per hour. However, the enzyme activity of mutated HO-1 declined and the value was 1948-2160 U/mg protein per hour. When an equal amount of mutant was added to the enzyme reaction system, the level of bilirubin decreased by 42%., Conclusion: The His25Ala mutant reduced the formation of bilirubin, suggesting that the mutant could completely bind the heme with native enzyme.

Prior studies in term infants have suggested that in utero phenobarbital exposure may accelerate bilirubin metabolism by stimulating hepatocyte glucuronyl transferase activity. This report reviews our experience with maternal phenobarbital therapy and fetal bilirubin conjugation in the very premature fetus. Mothers with arrested premature labor between 26 and 33 weeks' gestation were randomly assigned to receive oral phenobarbital (90 mg daily) or not. Infants in the two groups were similar in race, birth weight, and gestational age. Conjugated bilirubin levels at birth were significantly higher for infants receiving several days of phenobarbital in utero than no therapy (0.31 +/- 0.03 vs 0.16 +/- 0.01 mg dl, p less than 0.01). A smaller portion of infants exposed to phenobarbital in utero required phototherapy (10/23, 43% vs 24/29, 83%, p less than 0.01), which was also more likely to be delayed beyond 48 hours after delivery. Antenatal phenobarbital enhances bilirubin conjugation before delivery of a very low birth weight infant.

To enhance degradation of unconjugated bilirubin in hyperbilirubinemic subjects, we synthesized a bilirubin oxidase (EC 1.3.3.5) (BO) derivative (PEGBO) by covalently linking (2,4-bis[O-methoxy(polyethyleneglycol)]-6-chloro-s-triazine) (PEG) to the enzyme. Intravenously injected BO in rats disappeared from the circulation with a half-life of 2.5 min; the half-life of PEGBO was 190 min. Intravenously injected BO minimally and transiently decreased plasma bilirubin levels in jaundiced Gunn rats and in bile-duct-ligated jaundiced rats. In contrast, PEGBO rapidly and substantially decreased plasma bilirubin levels and the effect persisted for longer than 3 h. Renal dysfunction often occurs in patients with liver diseases. To study the role of bilirubin toxicity for the kidney, functions of transtubular transport for organic anions was measured in bile-duct-ligated jaundiced animals before and after treatment with PEGBO. Bile duct ligation decreased urinary excretion of phenolsulfophthalein (PSP), an organic anion used for renal function test. Treatment of the jaundiced animals with PEGBO increased the rate of PSP disappearance from the circulation and normalized its urinary excretion. Thus, PEGBO might be useful for the study of bilirubin toxicity in jaundiced animals.

The application of an anionic macroreticular ion exchange resin, coated with a thin cross-linked albumin layer, as a hemoperfusion device for the removal of unconjugated bilirubin from the blood of hyperbilirubinemic newborn babies is reviewed. In vivo hemoperfusion runs with hyperbilirubinemic animal models - either by a choledocho-suprarenal vein shunt or by direct infusion of bilirubin into the vein - showed that a 40-ml resin column can remove some 20 mg bilirubin in 3 h. Hemoperfusion of female 8-14 kg baboons showed no significant effect of the column on blood chemistry and coagulation factors and repeated runs had no ill effects.

NaP treatment significantly reduced plasma bilirubin levels in the (jj) Gunn rat. It is suggested that NaP significantly increased extravascular bilirubin binding in the liver by induction of the synthesis of Y anion binding protein. The changes in bilirubin concentration of blood and other tissues subsequent to NaP treatment were consistent with the establishment of a new tissue bilirubin equilibrium.

Yin Zhi Huang (YZH) given stomach perfusion daily for three days in rabbits accelerated plasma clearance of infused unconjugated bilirubin. A similar but less dramatic effect could be obtained by using YZH or phenobarbital i. p. daily for three days in rats employing simultaneously with the method of bile duct ligation, plasma indirect bilirubin levels was lower but hepatic bilirubin content and plasma direct bilirubin levels were higher in both YZH and phenobarbital treated rats than those in the control animals. These observations suggested that YZH and phenobarbital shared a common mechanism of acting in lowering the indirect bilirubin levels of serum.

The synthetic heme analogue Sn-protoporphyrin is a potent competitive inhibitor of heme oxygenase, the rate-limiting enzyme in heme degradation to bile pigment, and can entirely suppress hyperbilirubinemia in neonatal animals and significantly reduce plasma bilirubin levels in a variety of circumstances in experimental animals and man. To further explore the mechanism by which this metalloporphyrin reduces bilirubin levels in vivo, we have examined its effects on bilirubin production in bile duct-cannulated rats, in which bilirubin derived from heme catabolism is known to be rapidly excreted in bile. The administration of Sn-protoporphyrin (10-50 mumol/kg body weight) was followed by prompt (within approximately 1 h) and sustained (up to at least 18 h) decreases in bilirubin output, to levels 25-30 percent below the levels of bilirubin output in control bile fistula animals. The metalloporphyrin had no effect on bile flow or the biliary output of bile acids. Infusions of heme, which is taken up primarily in hepatocytes, or of heat-damaged erythrocytes, which are taken up in reticuloendothelial cells, resulted in marked increases in bilirubin output in bile in control animals; these increases were completely prevented or substantially diminished by Sn-protoporphyrin administration. By contrast, the metalloporphyrin did not alter the high levels of bilirubin in plasma and bile that were achieved in separate experiments by the constant (16 h) infusion of unconjugated bilirubin to bile duct-cannulated rats. Thus, Sn-protoporphyrin exerts no major effects on the metabolic disposition of preformed bilirubin. Heme oxygenase activities were markedly decreased in microsomal preparations from liver, spleen, and kidneys in these experiments, to a degree comparable to the decreases we have observed in the intact rat. We also demonstrated that a substantial proportion (19-35%) of a dose of Sn-protoporphyrin is promptly excreted in bile and that the time course of biliary excretion of this compound more closely reflects plasma concentrations of the metalloporphyrin, which decline rapidly, rather than concentrations in liver, which are considerably more persistent. These results indicate that Sn-protoporphyrin substantially reduces the in vivo production of bilirubin from the degradation of endogenous as well as exogenous heme in the rat. Moreover, this inhibitory effect of the synthetic metalloporphyrin on bilirubin production occurs in both hepatocytes and reticuloendothelial cells, which are the major tissue sites for bilirubin formation. In other studies, we have established that heme oxygenase blockade by Sn-protoporphyrin leads to a marked and rapid excretion of heme into bile presumably because the synthetic metabolism to bile pigment and making it available for excretion via the biliary system in to the gut, These studies strongly suggest that Sn-protoporphyrin diminishes hyperbilirubinemia in animals and man by inhibiting the production of the bile pigment in vivo, and that its principal mode of action involves a potent and sustained competitive inhibition of heme oxygenase.

Using a single pass, flow-through system, the excretion rate of endogenously produced carbon monoxide (VeCO) was measured as an index of bilirubin production in 41 Caucasian infants of various gestational ages after the first postnatal week. twenty-one were less than or equal to 32 weeks gestation. The mean slope for the 25 premature infants with multiple VeCO determinations was -0.21 +/- 0.11 (SE) microliters/kg/hour per day (P less than .025, one-tailed). Fifteen premature infants with at least three VeCO determinations during the first 30 days of life had an average decrease in total CO excreted of 1.33% per day compared to the extrapolated initial value of total CO excretion of 27.0 +/- 2.0 (SE) microliters/hour, giving a calculated maximum red cell life span of 75 days.
