Cichoriumintybus L., often known as chicory, is a Mediterranean plant species that is a member of the Asteraceae family. It has been known to have therapeutic benefits for a very long time. C. intybus is unique among the six species of Cichorium that are grown in Europe and Asia because of its wide range of uses in conventional medicine. Natural sweetener honey has been valued for generations for its delectable flavor and therapeutic benefits. This mini-review examines the various medicinal advantages of the bioactive substances present in honey. Although sugars are the main component of honey, it also contains a variety of secondary metabolites, including phenolic chemicals, flavonoids, enzymes, and peptides. The antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and wound-healing effects of honey are a result of these bioactive substances. Traditional medicine has used honey to cure a variety of illnesses, and modern scientific investigations have offered strong evidence in favor of honey's therapeutic potential. The agonising disorder known as dysmenorrhea, which is characterized by painful menstruation, affects women all over the world. Due to their apparent efficacy and lack of side effects, traditional and herbal treatments for the management of dysmenorrhea have attracted increasing interest in recent years. The goal of this review is to offer a thorough examination of the most recent scientific research on the use of herbal remedies for the treatment of dysmenorrhea. We thoroughly investigate a wide range of medicinal plants, their active ingredients, their modes of action, and the clinical data demonstrating their effectiveness. This review emphasises the potential of medicinal plants as alternative or complementary options for the management of dysmenorrhea through an in-depth examination of botanical interventions. The dearth of comprehensive clinical trials and disparities in study design, however, highlight the need for more investigation into the safety and effectiveness of these therapies. This study provides a helpful resource for healthcare professionals, researchers, and individuals looking for alternative methods to lessen the burden of dysmenorrhea by highlighting the knowledge gaps now in existence and providing insights into prospective future research areas. Pectin has been used as a carrier for the protection and targeted delivery of bioactive compounds and for increasing their shelf life and stability. Nano-encapsulation process is one of the techniques that has been used for the effective protection of bioactive compounds. This review aims to describe the different sources and characterization of pectin along with various encapsulation methods of different bioactive compounds. Furthermore, the focus is on the application of nano-encapsulation pectin for the entrapment of bioactive compounds. Pectin can be used for nano-encapsulation, where nano-capsules can be formed through different methods i.e. spray drying, emulsion and through the formation of hydrogel, liposomes, and nanocomplexes. Moreover, the use of pectin in combination with other compounds such as proteins and lipids were found to be the most promising wall material for the bioactive compounds. Drug nanodelivery systems (DNDSs) are fascinated cargos to achieve outstanding therapeutic results of various drugs or natural bioactive compounds owing to their unique structures. The efficiency of several pharmaceutical drugs or natural bioactive ingredients is restricted because of their week bioavailability, poor bioaccessibility and pharmacokinetics after orally pathways. In order to handle such constraints, usage of native/natural polysaccharides (NPLS) in fabrication of DNDSs has gained more popularity in the arena of nanotechnology for controlled drug delivery to enhance safety, biocompatibility, better retention time, bioavailability, lower toxicity and enhanced permeability. The main commonly used NPLS in nanoencapsulation systems include chitosan, pectin, alginates, cellulose, starches, and gums recognized as potential materials for fabrication of cargos. Herein, this review is centered on different polysaccharide-based nanocarriers including nanoemulsions, nanohydrogels, nanoliposomes, nanoparticles and nanofibers, which have already served as encouraging candidates for entrapment of therapeutic drugs as well as for their sustained controlled release. Furthermore, the current article explicitly offers comprehensive details regarding application of NPLS-based nanocarriers encapsulating several drugs intended for the handling of numerous disorders, including diabetes, cancer, HIV, malaria, cardiovascular and respiratory as well as skin diseases.
