Although biochar application to soils has been found to increase soil quality and crop yield, the biochar dispersion extent and its impacts on native soil organic carbon (SOC) has received relatively little attention. Here, the vertical and lateral migration of fine, intermediate and coarse-sized biochar (<0.5, 0.5–1 and 1–5 mm, respectively), applied at low and high doses (1.5–2 and 3–4% w/w, respectively), was tracked using stable isotope methods, along with its impact on native SOC stocks. Biochar was homogeneously mixed into the surface layer (0–7 cm depth) of a loamy sandy Acrisol in Zambia. After 4.5 y, 38–75% of the biochar carbon (BC) was lost from the applied layer and 4–25% was detected in lower soil layers (7–30 cm). Estimating BC mineralization to be no more than 8%, 25–60% was likely transported laterally out of the experimental plots. This conclusion was supported by observations of BC in the control plot and in soils up to 2 m outside of the experimental plots. These processes were likely progressive as recovery of BC in similar plots 1 year after application was greater in both surface and lower soil layers than after 4.5 y. Fine and intermediate-sized BC displayed the greatest downward migration (25.3 and 17.9%, respectively), particularly when applied at lower doses, suggesting its movement through soil inter-particle spaces. At higher dosages, fine and intermediate-sized particles may have clogged pore, so coarse biochar displayed the greatest downward migration when biochar was applied at higher doses. In the BC treatment plot soil profiles, native SOC stocks were reduced by 2.8 to 24.5% (18.4% on average), i.e. positive priming. However, some evidence suggested that the soils may switch to negative priming over time. This work showed for the first time that organic nutrient transformation techniques based on locally available materials (manure, green waste and advanced biochar) can increase fertilizing efficiency of the resulting substrate by a factor of three compared with other organic amendments without biochar. We used three different composting methods to investigate the techniques of organic nutrient transformations; i) conventional composting (composting process completed without turning the piles) ii) aerobic composting (composting process with manual turning of piles) and iii) bokashi composting (anaerobic lacto-fermentation). Composting was carried out in the absence (compost alone) and the presence of biochar (co-composted). Biochar was produced locally from an invasive forest shrub 'Eupatorium adenophorum'. A pot trial with maize grown in silty loam soil was carried out to investigate the agronomic effect produced using three above-mentioned composting methods that were compared with conventional mineral fertilizers (NPK). Significant effects of co-composted bokashi-biochar (60 t ha−1) were observed on maize growth, which increased biomass by 243% compared to mineral NPK, also showing better growth effects than conventional and aerobic composting amendments. Improved soil available nutrients (available P and other exchangeable base cations (K+, Ca2+ and Mg2+)) were probably the cause of the superior growth effect of co-composted bokashi-biochar. Poor water and nutrient retention are the major soil fertility limitations in the low productivity agricultural soils of Nepal. The addition of biochar to these soils is one way these hindrances can be overcome. In the present study, six different biochar doses (control, 5 t ha −1 , 10 t ha −1 , 15 t ha −1 , 25 t ha −1 and 40 t ha −1 ) were applied to a moderately acidic silty loam soil from Rasuwa, Nepal and the effects on soil physicochemical properties and maize and mustard yield over three years (i.e., six cropping seasons), were investigated. Biochar addition did not show significant effects on maize and mustard grain yield in the first year, however significant positive effects (p   <   0.01) were observed during the second and third years. During the second year, maize grain yield significantly increased by 50%, 47% and 93% and mustard grain yield by 96%, 128% and 134% at 15 t ha −1 , 25 t ha −1 and 40 t ha −1 of biochar respectively. A similar significant increase in yield of both crops was observed in the third year. Yields for both maize and mustard correlated significantly (p   <   0.001 ) with plant available P, K + , pH, total OC%, CEC, base saturation, and increased as a function of biochar addition. On the basis of the measured crop yields for the various biochar doses, a cost-benefit analysis was carried out, and gross margin was calculated to optimize biochar dose for local farming practice. Total costs included financial cost (farm input, labor and biochar production cost), health cost and methane emission cost during biochar production. Health costs were a minor factor (<2% of total biochar preparation cost), whereas methane emission costs were significant (up to 30% of biochar cost, depending on the C price). Total income comprised sale of crops and carbon sequestration credits. The cost-benefit analysis showed that the optimal biochar application dose was 15 t ha −1 for all C price scenarios, increasing gross margin by 21% and 53%, respectively, for 0 and 42 US$ per ton CO 2 price scenarios. In the current situation, only the 0 US$ price scenario is realistic for rural farmers in Nepal, but this still gives benefits of biochar amendment, which are capped at a 15 t ha −1 biochar addition. We studied the role of biochar in improving soil fertility for maize production. The effects of biochar on the alleviation of three potential physical-chemical soil limitations for maize growth were investigated, i.e. water stress, nutrient stress and acid stress. Experiments involved soils with two dosages of biochar (0.5% and 2% w:w), as well as ones without biochar, in combination with four different dosages of NPK fertilizer, water and lime. Biochar was produced from the invasive shrubby weed Eupatorium adenophorum using flame curtain kilns. This is the first study to alleviate one by one the water stress, nutrient stress and acid stress in order to investigate the mechanisms of biochar effects on soil fertility. Biochar addition increased soil moisture, potassium (K) and plant available phosphorous (P-AL), which all showed significant positive relationship ( p < 0.001) with above ground biomass of maize. However, biochar was much more effective at abundant soil watering (+ 311% biomass) than at water-starved conditions (+ 67% biomass), indicating that biochar did increase soil moisture, but that this was not the main reason for the positive biomass growth effects. Biochar addition did have a stronger effect under nutrient-stressed conditions (+ 363%) than under abundant nutrient application (+ 132%). Biochar amendment increased soil pH, but liming and pH had no effect on maize dry biomass, so acidity stress alleviation was not the mechanism of biochar effects on soil fertility. In conclusion, the alleviation of nutrient stress was the probably the main factor contributing to the increased maize biomass production upon biochar addition to this moderately acidic Inceptisol. Heavy clay soils are globally widespread but their poor drainage and poor aeration limit their use for agriculture. This study was designed to test the effect of the amendment of biochar (BC) from woody shrubs on drainage/saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ksat), soil aeration/air capacity, available water capacity and biomass and grain yields of maize. In a field experiment, BC from Gliricidia sepium was applied in planting basins or rip lines at 2.5% and 5% w/w in addition to a control without BC. The maize biomass and grain yields were higher in BC treated plots compared to control (p<0.05) during the 2012 and 2013 seasons. There was no significant difference in the yields between 2.5% and 5% BC treatments (e.g. grain yield were 6.6 and 8.1 t ha-1 in 2012 and 9.3 and 10.3 t ha-1 in 2013 compared to control with 4.2 and 6.7 t ha-1 in 2012 and 2013, respectively). Soil from the same field site was also mixed with a similar woody shrub BC from Eupatorium adenophorum in the laboratory at rates of 2.5%, 5% and 10% BC w/w and a control without BC. The mixtures were then incubated and subjected to two wet-dry cycles for two weeks. Core samples were taken from the incubated soil and tested for bulk density, Ksat and pF measurements. Total porosity and moisture at field capacity and wilting point were 72.3%, 43.7% and 23.7%, respectively, and not affected by BC amendment (p>0.05). In contrast, bulk density decreased linearly by 0.011±0.002 g cm-3 per percent BC added (p<0.001). Ksat and air capacity of the soil were 288 cm day-1 and 30.9%, respectively falling within the generally accepted optimal range. Both Ksat and air capacity followed a significant quadratic relation (p<0.05) upon BC addition, decreasing at low BC doses, reaching a minimum at 3–5% BC and increasing at higher doses. Biochar application to soils has been investigated as a means of improving soil fertility and mitigating climate change through soil carbon sequestration. In the present work, the invasive shrub "Eupatorium adenophorum" was utilized as a sustainable feedstock for making biochar under different pyrolysis conditions in Nepal. Biochar was produced using several different types of kilns; four sub types of flame curtain kilns (deep-cone metal kiln, steel shielded soil pit, conical soil pit and steel small cone), brick-made traditional kiln, traditional earth-mound kiln and top lift up draft (TLUD). The resultant biochars showed consistent pH (9.1 ± 0.3), cation exchange capacities (133 ± 37 cmolc kg-1), organic carbon contents (73.9 ± 6.4%) and surface areas (35 to 215 m2/g) for all kiln types. A pot trial with maize was carried out to investigate the effect on maize biomass production of the biochars made with various kilns, applied at 1% and 4% dosages. Biochars were either pretreated with hot or cold mineral nutrient enrichment (mixing with a nutrient solution before or after cooling down, respectively), or added separately from the same nutrient dosages to the soil. Significantly higher CEC (P< 0.05), lower Al/Ca ratios (P< 0.05), and high OC% (P<0.001) were observed for both dosages of biochar as compared to non-amended control soils. Importantly, the study showed that biochar made by flame curtain kilns resulted in the same agronomic effect as biochar made by the other kilns (P > 0.05). At a dosage of 1% biochar, the hot nutrient-enriched biochar led to significant increases of 153% in above ground biomass production compared to cold nutrient-enriched biochar and 209% compared to biochar added separately from the nutrients. Biochar (BC) has been reported to improve soil physical properties mainly in laboratory and greenhouse pot experiments. Here we study, under field conditions, the effect of BC and its particle sizes on soil aggregate stability, bulk density (BD), water retention, and pore size distribution in two experiments in Zambia. A) Farmer practice experiment in sandy loam with maize cob BC in conservation farming planting basins under maize and soybeans crops. B) Maize cob and rice husk BC particle size experiments (≤0.5, 0.5–1 and 1–5 mm particle sizes) in loamy sand and sand. In the farmer practice experiment, BC increased aggregate stability by 7–9% and 17–20% per percent BC added under maize and soybeans crops respectively ( p < 0.05) after two growing seasons. Total porosity and available water capacity (AWC) increased by 2 and 3% respectively per percent BC added ( p < 0.05) under both crops, whereas BD decreased by 3–5% per percent BC added ( p ≤ 0.01). In the maize cob BC particle size experiment after one growing season, dose was a more important factor than particle size across the soils tested. Particle size of BC was more important in loamy sand than in sand, with ≤0.5 and 1–5 mm sizes producing the strongest effects on the measured properties. For example, BD decreased while total porosity increased ( p < 0.01) for all BC particle sizes in sand whereas only 1–5 mm BC significantly decreased BD and increased total porosity in loamy sand ( p < 0.05). However, AWC was significantly increased by only ≤0.5 and 1–5 mm BCs by 7–9% per percent BC added in both loamy sand and sand. Rice husk BC effect after one year followed similar pattern as maize cob BC but less effective in affecting soil physical properties. The use of biochar as an agricultural soil improvement was tested in acid sulfate and sandy soils from Malaysia, cropped with rice and corn. Malaysia has an abundance of waste rice husks that could be used to produce biochar. Rice husk biochar was produced in a gasifier at a local mill in Kelantan as well as in the laboratory using a controlled, specially designed, top lift up draft system (Belonio unit). Rice husk biochar was applied once to both soils at two doses (2% and 5%), in a pot set up that was carried out for two cropping seasons. Positive and significant crop yield effects were observed for both soils, biochars and crops. The yield effects varied with biochar type and dosage, with soil type and over the cropping seasons. The yield increases observed for the sandy soil were tentatively attributed to significant increases in plant-available water contents (from 4%-5% to 7%-8%). The yield effects in the acid sulfate soil were likely a consequence of a combination of (i) alleviation of plant root stress by aluminum (Ca/Al molar ratios significantly increased, from around 1 to 3-5) and (ii) increases in CEC. Biochar (BC) application to soil suppresses emission of nitrous- (N2O) and nitric oxide (NO), but the mechanisms are unclear. One of the most prominent features of BC is its alkalizing effect in soils, which may affect denitrification and its product stoichiometry directly or indirectly. We conducted laboratory experiments with anoxic slurries of acid Acrisols from Indonesia and Zambia and two contrasting BCs produced locally from rice husk and cacao shell. Dose-dependent responses of denitrification and gaseous products (NO, N2O and N2) were assessed by high-resolution gas kinetics and related to the alkalizing effect of the BCs. To delineate the pH effect from other BC effects, we removed part of the alkalinity by leaching the BCs with water and acid prior to incubation. Uncharred cacao shell and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) were also included in the study. The untreated BCs suppressed N2O and NO and increased N2 production during denitrification, irrespective of the effect on denitrification rate. The extent of N2O and NO suppression was dose-dependent and increased with the alkalizing effect of the two BC types, which was strongest for cacao shell BC. Acid leaching of BC, which decreased its alkalizing effect, reduced or eliminated the ability of BC to suppress N2O and NO net production. Just like untreated BCs, NaOH reduced net production of N2O and NO while increasing that of N2. This confirms the importance of altered soil pH for denitrification product stoichiometry. Addition of uncharred cacao shell stimulated denitrification strongly due to availability of labile carbon but only minor effects on the product stoichiometry of denitrification were found, in accordance with its modest effect on soil pH. Our study indicates that stimulation of denitrification was mainly due to increases in labile carbon whereas change in product stoichiometry was mainly due to a change in soil pH. In extensive farmer-led trials practicing conservation farming (CF) in three regions of Zambia (Mongu: sandy soils; Kaoma: sandy or loamy sand soils; Mkushi: sandy loam or loamy soils), we studied the effects of biochar made of maize cobs (0, 2, and 6 t ha−1 corresponding to 0, 0.8, and 2.5% per basin) at different fertilizer rates of NPK and urea on crop yield of maize ( Zea mays) and groundnuts ( Arachis hypogaea). Conservation farming in this case combines minimum tillage (how basins), crop rotation and residue retention. For the first time, the effect of biochar on in situ soil nutrient supply rates [determined by buried Plant Root Simulator (PRS™) exchange resins] was studied, as well as the effects of biochar on elemental composition of maize. Effects of 0-10% (w:w) biochar addition on soil physical and soil chemical properties were determined in the laboratory. At all sites there was a consistent positive response in crop yield upon the addition of biochar. However, due to a great variability between farms there were no significant differences in absolute yields between the treatments. In the sandy soils at Mongu, relative yields ( i.e., percentage yield with biochar relative to the same fertilizer rate without biochar) of maize grains and maize stover were significantly increased at recommended fertilizer rates (232 ± 60%) and at half the recommended rate (128 ± 6%), respectively. In addition, biochar significantly increased concentrations of K and P in maize stover. In situ soil nutrient supply rates as measured by PRS™-probes were highly spatially variable with no consistent effects of the different treatments in the three regions. By contrast, the fraction of plant available water (Vol.-%) significantly increased upon the addition of biochar in all three soils. The increase caused by 10% biochar addition was of factor 2.5 in Mongu (from 4.5% to 11.2%) and 1.2 in both Kaoma (from 14.7% to 18.2%) and Mkushi (from 18.2% to 22.7%). Cation exchange capacity, pH, and exchangeable K significantly increased upon the addition of 10% (w:w) biochar in all three regions with a subsequent increase in base saturation and decrease of available Al3+. Our findings suggest that the addition of biochar in combination with CF might have a positive impact on crop growth and that this positive effect is mainly caused by increases in plant-available water and decreased available Al. This study investigated the effect of biochar amendments on the retention and availability of plant nutrients and Al in seven acidic tropical soils from Zambia and Indonesia. The experiments carried out investigated whether the adsorption capacity of NH $ _4^+ $ in the soils increased upon the addition of biochar and which effect biochar had on available concentrations of NO $ _3^- $, K+, Mn2+, Mg2+ , PO $ _4^{3‐} $, and Al3+. These nutrients were selected as they represent those important to plant growth and soil quality. No significant increases or decreases in aqueous NH $ _4^+ $-N concentration with additions of biochar were detected. The Gaines-Thomas model was used in order to calculate selectivity coefficients for NH $ _4^+ $ exchange (Kgt values). Following the addition of biochar to soil, Kgt values decreased showing a reduction in the selective binding of NH $ _4^+ $ in the biochar amended soil compared to the control. The concentration of NO $ _3^- $ increased following the addition of biochar to the soils. The addition of 5 and 10% biochar to the Indonesian soil did not significantly alter ( t-test confidence level 0.05) the sorption of PO $ _4^{3‐} $ to the soil-biochar mixtures as compared to the soil alone. However, the addition of biochar to the soil from Zambia increased the sorption of PO $ _4^{3‐} $ compared to the soil alone. The concentrations of K+ and Mg2+ were significantly increased for almost all soils ( t-test at the 0.05 confidence level) following the addition of biochar. Addition of biochar to all but two soils significantly decreased ( t-test confidence level 0.05) Mn2+ concentrations. The concentration of Al3+ in the soils decreased exponentially significantly ( t-test confidence level 0.05) following the amendment of biochar in accordance with the increase in pH observed when biochar was added to the soil. Low fertility limits crop production on acidic soils dominating much of the humid tropics. Biochar may be used as a soil enhancer, but little consensus exists on its effect on crop yield. Here we use a controlled, replicated and long-term field study in Sumatra, Indonesia, to investigate the longevity and mechanism of the effects of two contrasting biochars (produced from rice husk and cacao shell, and applied at dosages of 5 and 15 t ha −1 ) on maize production in a highly acidic Ultisol (pH KCl 3.6). Compared to rice husk biochar, cacao shell biochar exhibited a higher pH (9.8 vs. 8.4), CEC (197 vs. 20 cmol c kg −1 ) and acid neutralizing capacity (217 vs. 45 cmol c kg −1 ) and thus had a greater liming potential. Crop yield effects of cacao shell biochar (15 t ha −1 ) were also much stronger than those of rice husk biochar, and could be related to more favorable Ca/Al ratios in response to cacao shell biochar (1.0 to 1.5) compared to rice husk biochar (0.3 to 0.6) and nonamended plots (0.15 to 0.6). The maize yield obtained with the cacao shell biochar peaked in season 2, continued to have a good effect in seasons 3–4, and faded in season 5. The yield effect of the rice husk biochar was less pronounced and already faded from season 2 onwards. Crop yields were correlated with the pH-related parameters Ca/Al ratio, base saturation and exchangeable K. The positive effects of cocoa shell biochar on crop yield in this Ultisol were at least in part related to alleviation of soil acidity. The fading effectiveness after multiple growth seasons, possibly due to leaching of the biochar-associated alkalinity, indicates that 15 t ha −1 of cocoa shell biochar needs to be applied approximately every third season in order to maintain positive effects on yield. Mercury (Hg) contamination of surface soils has increased by ~ 86 Giga grams due to anthropogenic activities. There is an urgent need to find new, effective and preferably ‘green’ remediation technologies to protect human health and the environment. Sulfur-modification of sorbents can greatly enhance Hg sorption capacity - by forming low solubility HgS (cinnabar). However, S-modified sorbents are not considered suitable for soil remediation due to the economic cost and secondary environmental impacts of sorbents such as granulated activated carbon (GAC), and the toxicity of S-modifiers such as thiol compounds. It was previously found that if biochar is used as an alternative to GAC then the overall environmental impact can be significantly reduced. However, due to a lack of experimental evidence, the practicality of S-modified biochar remains uncertain. The present study was undertaken to provide a proof-of-concept for the ‘green’ remediation of Hg contaminated soils with rice husk biochar modified with non-toxic elemental S. It was found that the S modification process increased the biochar S content from 0.2% to 13.04% via surface deposition or volume pore filling. This increased the biochar's Hg 2 + adsorptive capacity (Q max ) by ~ 73%, to 67.11 mg/g. To assess the performance of S-modified rice husk biochar for soil remediation it was applied to a high 1000 mg/kg Hg 2 + contaminated soil. Treatment dosages of 1%, 2% and 5% (dry wt.) were found to reduce freely available Hg in TCLP (toxicity characterization leaching procedure) leachates by 95.4%, 97.4% and 99.3%, respectively, compared to untreated soil. In comparison, unmodified rice husk biochar reduced Hg concentrations by 94.9%, 94.9% and 95.2% when applied at the same treatment dosage rates, respectively. Biochar (BC) has been reported to improve a number of soil structural and hydraulic properties but detailed studies are scant on how BC affects crust formation, penetration resistance, water repellency and saturated hydraulic conductivity (K sat ). The objective of this study was to quantify the effect of maize cob BC of three different particle sizes on soil crusting (penetration resistance), water repellency, and K sat of loamy fine sand and sandy loam in Zambia. The BC particle sizes were <0.5 and 1–5 mm applied at 17.5 and 35 t ha −1 in the two soils and intermediate size of 0.5–1 mm applied at lower rates (17.5 and 28 t ha −1 in the loamy fine sand and 13.3 and 26.7 t ha −1 in the sandy loam). Water repellency included both water drop penetration time (WDPT) and minimum molarity of the ethanol droplet at which rapid infiltration into the soil occurs. The BC was produced by slow pyrolysis of corn cobs at a temperature of 350 °C. Biochar, added homogeneously to the upper 7 cm of the soil, reduced the penetration resistance of surface soil of sandy loam with both the crust intact (−2.1 ± 0.6 N cm −2 per percent BC added; p = 0.001 in March 2015 and slightly smaller in October 2014) and the crust removed (−2.9 ± 0.6 N cm −2 per percent BC added; p = 0.0001). This effect occurred irrespective of particle size of BC (p > 0.05). No effect of BC on penetration resistance was found in the loamy fine sand (p > 0.05). In dry sandy loam with moisture content <1% v/v, the proportion of wettable crusted surface was significantly smaller (25%) than in moist soil (98%) with moisture content of ∼ 10% v/v. Only fine BC of <0.5 mm increased WDPT of the crusted surface of sandy loam (p < 0.05), reducing the proportion of wettable surface from 98 to 80% in moist soil and from 25 to 18% in dry soil. Coarser BCs, instead, increased the proportion of wettable crusted surface from 25% to 45% and 90% for 3% 0.5–1 mm BC and 4% 1–5 mm BC addition, respectively, in dry soil. Biochar significantly reduced K sat (p < 0.05) in sandy loam below the crust by 0.17 ± 0.07 cm h −1 per percent BC added. However, no effect was found in loamy fine sand. Since BC amended sandy loam below the crust showed no water repellency, reduction in K sat cannot be explained by water-repellent nature of BC. Field experiments were conducted in Arenosols (loamy fine sand) and Acrisols (sandy loam) in Zambia to quantify vertical and lateral transport of biochar (BC) using the BC and soil 13 C isotope signatures and total organic carbon contents. There were three experimental treatments composing of no BC, ≤0.5 and 0.5–1 mm BCs each with three replicates arranged in completely randomized design. The applied BCs were made from rice husk, except 0.5–1 mm BC in sandy loam, which was from maize cob. One year after mixing BC homogeneously in the 0–5 cm surface layer, soil down to 20 cm depth was sampled. The downward migration of BC was significant down to 8 cm depth in sandy loam and down to 6 cm in loamy fine sand. Below these depths, there was no significant difference in BC amounts between the BC amended and the reference plots. There was a general tendency for greater downward migration for the ≤0.5 mm than for 0.5–1 mm BC. Total BC recovery at 0–5 cm depth in the BC-treated soils amounted to 45–66% of the total applied amount of BC. As only 10–20% was recovered in the deeper soil layers, 24–45% of the applied BC could not be accounted for in the soil profile. Although, decomposition and downward migration to below 20 cm depth may contribute to the loss of BC from the surface soil, much can be attributed to lateral transfer through erosion. Amendments of biochar, a product of pyrolysis of biomass, have been shown to increase fertility of acidic soils by enhancing soil properties such as pH, cation-exchange-capacity and water-holding-capacity. These parameters are important in the context of natural organic matter contained in soils, of which dissolved organic matter (DOM) is the mobile and most bioavailable fraction. The effect of biochar on the content and composition of DOM in soils has received little research attention. This study focuses on the effects of amendments of two different biochars to an acidic acrisol and a pH-neutral brown soil. A batch experiment showed that mixing biochar with the acrisols at a 10 wt.% dose increased the pH from 4.9 to 8.7, and this resulted in a 15-fold increase in the dissolved organic carbon concentration (from 4.5 to 69 mg L −1 ). The pH-increase followed the same trend as the release of DOM in the experiment, causing higher DOM solubility and desorption of DOM from mineral sites. The binding to biochar of several well-characterised reference DOM materials was also investigated and results showed a higher sorption of aliphatic DOM to biochar than aromatic DOM, with DOM-water partitioning coefficients ( K d -values) ranging from 0.2 to 590 L kg −1 . A size exclusion occurring in biochar’s micropores, could result in a higher sorption of smaller aliphatic DOM molecules than larger aromatic ones. These findings indicate that biochar could increase the leaching of DOM from soil, as well as change the DOM composition towards molecules with a larger size and higher aromaticity. Projected climate change in Sub-Saharan Africa involves increased drought and elevated soil temperature. Conservation farming (CF), including minimum tillage, crop rotation and crop residue retention, is proposed as a climate smart soil management option to adapt to climate change through enhanced climate resilience. Here, we determine the effect on soil moisture and temperature of CF planting basins in a Zambian Acrisol. Construction of CF planting basins (40 cm x 15 cm, while 20 cm deep), using hand-hoes, is a commonly used minimum tillage practice among small holders in southern Africa, effectively requiring tillage of only 10 % of a field. The study included basins under regular CF and under CF with 4 t ha−1 pigeon pea biochar (CF + BC). Effects are compared with those in an adjacent soil under conventional tillage, where the entire land surface is ploughed. Soil moisture and temperature sensors were installed in the root zone, 10–12 cm deep, for continuous monitoring during two growing seasons. Soil moisture decreased in the order CF + BC > CF > conventional farming. Due to rainwater harvesting in the basins, maximum soil water retention under CF + BC and CF was greater than under conventional farming (+59 % to +107 % and +15 % to +65 %, respectively). Soil drying after free drainage until permanent wilting point lasted longer under CF + BC (18.4–22.3 days) than under both CF and conventional farming (13.3–18.4 days and 14.9–17.8 days, respectively). In situ soil maximum temperature and diurnal temperature range in the growing season increased in the order CF + BC < CF < conventional farming due to decreases in soil moisture. However, additional laboratory tests, with soil-BC mixtures at field capacity, revealed that BC addition to soil, which caused a decrease in bulk density, also resulted in a significant decline in soil thermal conductivity (p < 0.001). Thus, we hypothesize that BC-enhanced soil moisture in basins helped to reduce soil temperature and its fluctuations, due to both increased heat capacity and decreased thermal conductivity. This study shows that CF in combination with BC in an Acrisol, through enhancing plant-available water and moderating soil temperature, is important for crop productivity and has potential as an element of climate smart agriculture.
