We investigated the occurrence and removal of four benzotriazoles (BTs) (benzotriazole: BT; 5-methyl-benzotriazole: 5-TTri; 5-chloro-benzotriazole: CBT; 5,6-dimethyl-benzotriazole: XTri) and six UV filters (benzophenone-3: BP-3; 3-(4-methylbenzylidene)camphor: 4-MBC; octyl 4-methoxycinnamate: OMC; 2-(3-t-butyl-2-hydroxy-5-methylphenyl)-5-chloro benzotriazole: UV-326; 2-(2′-Hydroxy-5′-octylphenyl)-benzotriazole: UV-329; octocrylene: OC) in a full scale municipal wastewater treatment in South Australia. BT, 5-TTri and BP-3 were found as the dominant compounds detected in the wastewater samples with average concentrations up to 5706 ± 928 ng/L, 6758 ± 1438 ng/L and 2086 ± 1027 ng/L in influent, and up to 2439 ± 233 ng/L, 610 ± 237 ng/L and 153 ± 121 ng/L in effluent, respectively. In the biosolid, 4-MBC and OC were found with the highest concentrations of 962 ± 135 ng/g and 465 ± 65 ng/g, respectively. Sorption onto sludge played a dominant role in the removal for UV filters, especially for 4-MBC, UV-326 and OC, which accounted for 54%–92% of influent loads, while biological degradation played a significant role for the other compounds. Triclocarban and triclosan are two antimicrobial agents widely used in many personal care products. Their biodegradation behaviour in soil was investigated by laboratory degradation experiments and environmental fate modelling. Quantitative structure–activity relationship (QSAR) analyses showed that triclocarban and triclosan had a tendency to partition into soil or sediment in the environment. Fate modelling suggests that either triclocarban or triclosan “does not degrade fast” with its primary biodegradation half-life of “weeks” and ultimate biodegradation half-life of “months”. Laboratory experiments showed that triclocarban and triclosan were degraded in the aerobic soil with half-life of 108 days and 18 days, respectively. No negative effect of these two antimicrobial agents on soil microbial activity was observed in the aerobic soil samples during the experiments. But these two compounds persisted in the anaerobic soil within 70 days of the experimental period. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

We investigated bioavailability and biodegradation of carbaryl (1-naphthyl methylcarbamate) in a soil with a long history of pesticide contamination from a storage facility located at Mamoon Kanjan, Pakistan. Carbaryl is weakly sorbed and generally considered to be easily degradable in soil. Extraction studies revealed that 49% of the total carbaryl in soil (88.0 mg kg-1) was not water-extractable and also not bioavailable, as demonstrated by inoculation of the contaminated soil with a carbaryl-degrading, mixed bacterial culture. Inoculation of the contaminated soil with the carbaryl-degrading culture showed that the bacteria were capable of degrading only the available (i.e., water-extractable) fraction of the pesticide. When the soil was pulverized in a ball mill to enhance the release of residue, an additional 19% of the carbaryl became bioavailable. A significant proportion of residue (≈33%) remained unavailable. The long (>12 years) contact time between the pesticide and soil (i.e., aging), allowing possible sequestration into soil nanopores and the organic matter matrices, is suggested to have rendered the pesticide unavailable for microbial degradation. High concentration (88.0 mg kg-1) in soil facilitated its persistence and sequestration. Results from the present study demonstrate that even a weakly sorbed and easily degradable pesticide, carbaryl, is effectively sequestrated in soil with time, rendering it partly inaccessible to microorganisms and affecting the bioavailability of the compound. Sorption and degradation of the five selected endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) including bisphenol A (BPA), 17β-estradiol (E2), 17α-ethynylestradiol (EE2), 4-tert-octylphenol (4-t-OP) and 4-n-nonylphenol (4-n-NP) have been investigated in the laboratory using sediment and groundwater from an aquifer in Bolivar, South Australia. The sorption coefficients measured on the sediment were in the following order: 4-n-NP>4-t-OP>EE2>E2>BPA. The sorption coefficients (Kf values) for the five EDCs were 3.89, 21.8, 24.2, 90.9 and 195, respectively. The alkylphenols 4-t-OP and 4-n-NP had strong binding on the sediment while BPA had a weak affinity. Degradation experiments of the five EDCs showed that E2 and 4-n-NP degraded quickly under aerobic conditions with a half-life of 2 and 7 days, respectively. EE2 degraded slowly with an estimated half-life of 81 days in the aquifer material under aerobic conditions while the other two chemicals (BPA and 4-t-OP) remained almost unchanged. Little or no degradation of the five EDCs except slow degradation for E2 was observed within 70 days under anaerobic conditions in native groundwater. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Laboratory biodegradation batch studies were performed to investigate the degradation behavior of six selected UV filters, namely benzophenone-3 ( BP-3), 3-(4-methylbenzylidene) camphor (4- MBC), Octyl 4-methoxycinnamate ( OMC), Octocrylene ( OC), 2-(3- t-butyl-2-hydroxy-5-methylphenyl)-5-chloro benzotriazole ( UV-326), and 2-(2'-hydroxy-5'-octylphenyl)-benzotriazole ( UV-329) in an aquifer microcosm (groundwater and aquifer sediment mixture) under aerobic and anaerobic (nitrate, sulfate, and Fe( III) reducing) conditions within 77 d. The results from the biodegradation experiments showed that the six UV filters were degraded well in the aquifer materials under different redox conditions. Rapid biodegradation was observed for BP-3 and OMC in the aquifer materials, with their half-lives of 1.5-8.8 d and 1.3-5.2 d, respectively. In most cases, aerobic conditions were more favorable for the degradation of the UV filters in aquifer materials. Relatively slow degradation of 4- MBC, UV-326, and UV-329 under anaerobic conditions was noted with their half-lives ranging between 47 d and 126 d, indicating potential persistence in anaerobic aquifers. Studies were undertaken to assess sorption of seven endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), namely, estrone (E1), 17β-estradiol (E2), estriol (E3), 17α-ethynylestradiol (EE2), bisphenol A (BPA), 4-tert-octyl phenol (4-t-OP), and 4-n-nonyl phenol (4-n-NP) on four soils (from sandy to clay soil) with different physicochemical properties and biodegradation of five EDCs (BPA, E2, EE2, 4-t-OP, and 4-n-NP) in a loam soil associated with wastewater reuse. We also characterized the biotransformation of E2 to E1 in the loam soil under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. Sorption test using a batch equilibrium method demonstrated that alkylphenols (4-t-OP and 4-n-NP) had the strongest sorption onto soils, followed by estrogens (EE2, E2, E1, E3) and BPA. This laboratory study showed that all five EDCs, including the degradation product E1, were degraded rapidly in the soil within 7 d under aerobic conditions. However, under anaerobic conditions in the soil, little or no degradation of the five EDCs was noted except for E2, which showed slow degradation during the 70-d study. The calculated half-lives for E2 under anaerobic conditions were 24 d in the soil. Estradiol was found to be biotransformed to E1 under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. The study suggested that the five EDCs as well as E1, which may be present in reclaimed wastewater, would not persist in well-aerated soil. But these EDCs persisting in anaerobic soil may affect soil and groundwater quality and ecosystem. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Imidazolinones are chiral herbicides, comprised of two enantiomers with differential herbicidal activity. In this study, the selective degradation of enantiomers of the three imidazolinone herbicides, imazapyr, imazethapyr and imazaquin, was determined in a variety of soils selected to cover a broad range of physico-chemical characteristics. The R(+) enantiomer of all three herbicides, which has greater herbicidal activity (up to eight times), was found to degrade faster than the less active S(−) enantiomer. The enantiomer fraction (EF) was used as a descriptor of enantio-selectivity of the imidazolinone herbicides. The EF values increased with increasing incubation time for imidazolinones with a fast initial phase followed by a slower phase. While the enantio-selectivity was not significant in acidic soils (pHw 5.02 and 5.20), it was highly significant (P <0.001) in alkaline soils (pHw 7.6, 8.2 and 8.7). Significant positive correlations of EF values of imazapyr (P <0.001, R 2 =0.41), imazethapyr (P <0.002, R 2 =0.47) and imazaquin (P <0.001, R 2 =0.54) were found with the soil pHw ranging from 5.02 to 8.7. However, no correlation of EF was found with other soil properties. In addition to showing enantioselective degradation of the three herbicides in the soils studied, the study highlighted that for imidazolinones the herbicidally more active enantiomer can be preferably degraded by microorganisms. Abstract: We investigated the biodegradation of three selected benzotriazoles (BTs), namely benzotriazole (BT), 5-methyl-benzotriazole (5-TTri) and 5-chloro-benzotriazole (CBT), in aquifer materials. Biodegradation experiments were conducted in microcosms with fresh groundwater and aquifer sediment materials under aerobic and anaerobic (nitrate, sulfate, and Fe (III) reducing) conditions. All three BTs were degraded by microorganisms in aquifer materials under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. Under aerobic conditions, BT and 5-TTri were found to be degraded fastest with their half-lives of 43days and 31days, respectively, among the redox conditions used. Under anaerobic conditions, CBT was found to be degraded better with its half-life of 21days under nitrate reducing conditions than under aerobic conditions with its half-life of 47days. The two BT derivatives 5-TTri and CBT could be biotransformed into BT via demethylation and dechlorination reactions, respectively. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: We examined the biodegradability of three benzotriazoles (benzotriazole: BT, 5-methylbenzotriazole: 5-TTri and 5-chlorobenzotriazole: CBT) under aerobic and anaerobic (nitrate, sulfate, and Fe (III) reducing) conditions. All three benzotriazoles were degraded by microorganisms under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. Both the biodegradation efficiency and biodegradation products were dependent on the predominant terminal electron-accepting condition. Among the redox conditions studied, the shortest biodegradation half lives for BT and 5-TTri were 114 days and 14 days, respectively, under aerobic condition. The shortest half-life for CBT was 26 days under Fe (III) reducing condition. The longest biodegradation half lives for BT and CBT were 315 days and 96 days, respectively, under sulfate reducing condition, while that of 5-TTri was 128 days under nitrate reducing condition. These results suggest that aerobic biodegradation is the dominant natural attenuation mechanism for BT and 5-TTri, while the most favorable process for CBT was anaerobic biodegradation. This study demonstrated that different predominant terminal electron-acceptors present in natural environment play a key role on the biodegradation of BT, 5-TTri and CBT, leading to specific biodegradability. This could have significant implications on in-situ biodegradation of the selected benzotriazoles in aerobic and anaerobic waters, soils and sediments. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Biodegradation and adsorption of selected endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), namely estrogens (E2 and EE2) and phenolic compounds (BPA, 4-t-OP and 4-n-NP), in aquifer materials was investigated in the laboratory in order to understand the behaviour and fate of these chemicals associated with reclaimed water during managed aquifer recharge. Biodegradation experiments were conducted in microcosms with aquifer material and groundwater mixture, or with aquifer material and effluent mixture in the presence of glucose under both aerobic and anoxic conditions. All five selected compounds were degraded by microorganisms in both types of aquifer material–water mixtures under aerobic and anoxic conditions. Under aerobic conditions, EE2 was found to degrade faster in the aquifer material supplemented with effluent with a half-life of 15 days compared with that of 26 days in the aquifer material and groundwater microcosm. No significant difference between the two aquifer material–water mixtures was found for the other four compounds with half-lives ranging between 0.2 and 4.1 days. Under anoxic conditions, however, little biodegradation was observed for the selected EDCs except for E2, which degraded in the aquifer material in the presence of both water types.
