Over many decades, isolated regions (e.g., islands, rural and remote areas) have heavily relied on diesel engine for producing power and energy. However, due to depleting fossil fuels and concerning emissions, biodiesels could be the substitute for diesel in power generation sectors. This study developed a single-zone thermodynamic model to predict the engine performances such as brake power (BP), torque, brake thermal efficiency (BTE), brake-specific fuel consumption (BSFC) and ignition delay (ID) times for diesel and jojoba biodiesel. The experiments were conducted on a fully automated, 4-cylinder, 4-stroke, liquid-cooled direct injection 3.7-L diesel engine fueled with diesel (D100) and three jojoba blends (JB5, JB10, and JB20) to validate the model. The performance simulation results agreed with experimental data for all tested fuels at 1200 to 2400 rpm speed and 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% loading operation. The minimum error (3.7%) was observed for BP for D100 at 2000 rpm and 100% load, and the maximum error (19.2%) was found for JB10 at 1200 rpm and 25% loading operation. As load increases from 25 to 100%, the BSFC and torque difference between diesel and JB20 decreases from 10 to 6.5 and 9 to 6%, respectively. A shorter ID time was observed in JB5 compared to JB10 and JB20. Furthermore, a significant reduction was observed in CO (7.55%) and HC (6.65%) emission for JB20 at 25% and 1200 rpm compared to diesel fuel; however, NOx emission was increased up to 10.25% under any given conditions. This study investigated the suitability of stone fruit seed as a source of biodiesel for transport. Stone fruit oil (SFO) was extracted from the seed and converted into biodiesel. The biodiesel yield of 95.75% was produced using the alkaline catalysed transesterification process with a methanol-to-oil molar ratio of 6:1, KOH catalyst concentration of 0.5 wt% (weight %), and a reaction temperature of 55 °C for 60 min. The physicochemical properties of the produced biodiesel were determined and found to be the closest match of standard diesel. The engine performance, emissions and combustion behaviour of a four-cylinder diesel engine fuelled with SFO biodiesel blends of 5%, 10% and 20% with diesel, v/v basis, were tested. The testing was performed at 100% engine load with speed ranging from 200 to 2400 rpm. The average brake specific fuel consumption and brake thermal efficiency of SFO blends were found to be 4.7% to 15.4% higher and 3.9% to 11.4% lower than those of diesel, respectively. The results also revealed that SFO biodiesel blends have marginally lower in-cylinder pressure and a higher heat release rate compared to diesel. The mass fraction burned results of SFO biodiesel blends were found to be slightly faster than those of diesel. The SFO biodiesel 5% blend produced about 1.9% higher NOx emissions and 17.4% lower unburnt HC with 23.4% lower particulate matter (PM) compared to diesel fuel. To summarise, SFO biodiesel blends are recommended as a suitable transport fuel for addressing engine emissions problems and improving combustion performance with a marginal sacrifice of engine efficiency. Biodiesel is an alternative to fossil fuels for diesel engines, yet actual biofuel properties need to be tuned to comply with fuel standards. In particular, fuel stability is required for efficiency and commercial use. Fuel stability varies with the nature and proportion of chemical functional groups of biodiesel. Optimum oxidation stability is required because degradation by oxidation gives products that compromise fuel properties and impair fuel quality and engine performance. For instance, oxidation induces the formation of short-chain corrosive acids and deposits. Here, we review techniques to improve the oxidation stability of biodiesel. For instance, stability is improved by additives such as antioxidants. Factors influencing oxidation stability include composition of fatty acids, acid content, peroxide content, iodine content, viscosity, insoluble impurities, external conditions, and storage material. The study investigated the engine performance and emission using biodiesel from soybean oil and waste cooking oil. The fuel properties of these biodiesels were determined using ASTM D6751and EN 14214 standards. The fuels were tested in a multi-cylinder diesel engine with an electromagnetic dynamometer and a 5-gas analyser was used for emission analysis. The result shows that the thermal performance of the engine slightly decreases with increase of the biodiesel blends ratio (i.e. B5, B10, B15, B20 and B50). On the other hand, emission decreases with the increase of biodiesel blends. The reduction in emissions was different for both biodiesels. Waste oil biodiesel showed better trends of emissions reduction with increase of the biodiesel percentage compared with soybean biodiesel. The brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) of both biodiesels is (6.05%, 9.13%, 12.36% and 18.57% for soybean) and (8.17%, 11.40%, 17.71% and 14.96% for waste cooking oil) higher than diesel, respectively. However, soybean biodiesel consumed less fuel and produced more power and torque compared to waste oil biodiesel. Biodiesel is a proven alternative fuel that can serve as a substitute for petroleum diesel due to its renewability, non-toxicity, sulphur-free nature and superior lubricity. Waste-based non-edible oils are studied as potential biodiesel feedstocks owing to the focus on the valorisation of waste products. Instead of being treated as municipal waste, waste coffee grounds (WCG) can be utilised for oil extraction, thereby recovering an energy source in the form of biodiesel. This study evaluates oil extraction from WCG using ultrasonic and Soxhlet techniques, followed by biodiesel conversion using an ultrasonic-assisted transesterification process. It was found that n-hexane was the most effective solvent for the oil extraction process and ultrasonic-assisted technology offers a 13.5% higher yield compared to the conventional Soxhlet extraction process. Solid-to-solvent ratio and extraction time of the oil extraction process from the dried waste coffee grounds (DWCG) after the brewing process was optimised using the response surface methodology (RSM). The results showed that predicted yield of 17.75 wt. % of coffee oil can be obtained using 1:30 w/v of the mass ratio of DWCG-ton-hexane and 34 min of extraction time when 32% amplitude was used. The model was verified by the experiment where 17.23 wt. % yield of coffee oil was achieved when the extraction process was carried out under optimal conditions. The infrared absorption spectrum analysis of WCG oil determined suitable functional groups for biodiesel conversion which was further treated using an ultrasonic-assisted transesterification process to successfully convert to biodiesel.
