Aim: Giant clams are iconic bivalves known to serve numerous ecological roles contributing to the functioning of coral reef ecosystems. In the next decade, giant clams will continue to face critical anthropogenic pressures from over‐exploitation for their meat and shells, the aquarium trade and global warming that threaten the persistence of their species. Here, we assess the relationships between different biodiversity components to inform conservation prioritization and management. Location: Indo‐Pacific marine realm. Methods: We quantified taxonomic, functional and phylogenetic diversity measures throughout 25 marine provinces and assessed their relationships for all 12 giant clam species in the subfamily Tridacninae. These biodiversity measures were used to identify potentially threatened species that contribute disproportionately to trait and evolutionary diversity and to highlight areas for global conservation prioritization of giant clam species. Results: Analyses show positive correlations among species richness (SR), functional diversity (FD) and phylogenetic diversity (PD), with the strongest relationship between FD and PD. However, spatial patterns of higher‐than‐expected FD and PD are incongruent with SR patterns, indicating that SR omits information associated with functional and phylogenetic diversity. Among the giant clam species, Tridacna gigas and Hippopus spp. have the greatest functional and evolutionary diversity contributions within assemblies, respectively. Spatial analyses reveal that the Bay of Bengal, Andaman and numerous parts of the eastern Indo‐Pacific potentially hold higher‐than‐expected FD and PD levels relative to their SR and thus warrant more attention with respect to conserving the diversity of giant clams. Conclusions: Our findings underscore the importance of integrating functional trait contributions and evolutionary diversity into conservation planning to better differentiate giant clam assemblages, as it remains challenging to implement dedicated conservation given the limited resources. This study provides comprehensive biodiversity information for managers to initiate measures that holistically capture species' ecological and evolutionary standings across global reef ecosystems. A new zooxanthellate reef-dwelling scleractinian coral species, Cyphastrea salae sp. n. (Scleractinia, Merulinidae), is described from Lord Howe Island Australia. The new species can be distinguished morphologically from the only other congeneric species on Lord Howe Island, C. microphthalma, by the number of primary septa (12 vs. 10) and the much taller corallites (mean ± SE: 1.0 ± 0.07 mm v 0.4 ± 0.04 mm). The relationship of C. salae to four of the other eleven currently accepted species in the genus was explored through analyses of nuclear (28S rDNA) and mitochondrial (noncoding intergenic region) gene sequences. Cyphastrea salae sp. n. forms a strongly supported clade that is distinct from a clade containing three species found commonly in Australia, C. chalcidicum, C. serailia, and C. microphthalma. One specimen was also found in the Solitary Islands, another high latitude location in south-eastern Australia. The discovery of a new species in the genus Cyphastrea on high latitude reefs in south-eastern Australia suggests that other new species might be found among more diverse genera represented here and that the scleractinian fauna of these isolated locations is more distinct than previously recognised. The taxonomic classification of feather stars (Echinodermata: Crinoidea) has been unstable due to the extensive use of environmentally and ontogenetically variable morphological characters for diagnosing taxa. Furthermore, crinoids remain poorly studied even in some of the most biodiverse regions of the world, such as Southeast Asia. Historically, Heterometra (Comatulida: Himerometroidea: Himerometridae) has been the most abundant and speciose genus reported in Singapore, but species-level identification is challenging due to the lack of clear diagnostic features. In this study, the identities of 48 Heterometra-like crinoids collected from 21–64 m in southern Singapore were assessed based on detailed morphological examination and molecular phylogenetic inference. Specimens were initially grouped into three morphospecies, and phylogenetic analyses based on the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene placed these morphospecies in three distinct clades separated by large interspecific distances. Phylogenetic results coupled with additional examination of morphology confirmed the three morphotypes as Heterometra crenulata, Zygometra cf. comata, and H. schlegelii. The phylogeny further corroborates recent work showing that Heterometra is polyphyletic, with all examined species other than H. crenulata nested within the family Mariametridae, while Zygometra is nested in family Himerometridae. The separation of crenulata from other Heterometra and comparison of new material with type specimens lead us to treat this taxon as Homalometra crenulata comb. nov. and Ho. denticulata as its junior synonym. Marine fungal biodiversity remains vastly understudied, and even less is known of their biogeography and the processes responsible for driving these distributions in marine environments. We investigated the fungal communities associated with the seagrass Enhalus acoroides collected from Singapore and Peninsular Malaysia to test the hypothesis that fungal communities are homogeneous throughout the study area. Seagrass samples were separated into different structures (leaves, roots, and rhizomes), and a sediment sample was collected next to each plant. Amplicon sequencing of the fungal internal transcribed spacer 1 and subsequent analysis revealed significant differences in fungal communities collected from different locations and different structures. We show a significant pattern of distance decay, with samples collected close to each other having more similar fungal communities in comparison with those that are more distant, indicating dispersal limitations and/or differences in habitat type are contributing to the observed biogeographic patterns. These results add to our understanding of the seagrass ecosystem in an understudied region of the world that is also the global epicenter of seagrass diversity. This work has implications for seagrass management and conservation initiatives, and we recommend that fungal community composition be a consideration for any seagrass transplant or restoration programme. Coral reefs are biologically diverse and ecologically complex ecosystems constructed by stony corals. Despite decades of research, basic coral population biology and community ecology questions remain. Quantifying trait variation among species can help resolve these questions, but progress has been hampered by a paucity of trait data for the many, often rare, species and by a reliance on nonquantitative approaches. Therefore, we propose filling data gaps by prioritizing traits that are easy to measure, estimating key traits for species with missing data, and identifying ‘supertraits’ that capture a large amount of variation for a range of biological and ecological processes. Such an approach can accelerate our understanding of coral ecology and our ability to protect critically threatened global ecosystems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The symbiosis between corals and Symbiodinium dinoflagellates is considered a major driver of the distribution and health of reefs worldwide. This study investigated the genetic identities and diversity of Symbiodinium in seven coral species ( Porites lutea, Porites lobata, Acropora millepora, Merulina ampliata, Diploastrea heliopora, Pachyseris speciosa, Pocillopora acuta) from three shallow reefs around Singapore (Kusu Island, Pulau Tekukor, Pulau Satumu). Analyses of 31 colonies using denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis of the nuclear internal transcribed spacer region indicated the dominance of C and D Symbiodinium clades. The latter clade was the predominant symbiont in Pachyseris speciosa collected from Pulau Tekukor but those sampled from Pulau Satumu hosted C27, providing evidence for variable symbiosis in this species. The prevalence of the D clade - noted for their stress tolerance (e.g. to elevated temperatures and sedimentation) - in three of seven coral species examined could underlie the importance of this particular symbiotic relationship for the persistence of Singapore's impacted reefs. Further characterisation of Symbiodinium communities may provide insights into corals' response to stress and their bleaching patterns in the future. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
