Abstract

The authors focus on aspects of the use of acronyms to describe pediatric clinical research trials. Topics discussed include ways in which positive-sounding acronyms improperly influence parents to volunteer their children for research, practical and scientific benefits accruing from the use of acronyms, and therapeutic misconceptions arising from acronyms used to describe clinical trials. Also mentioned are the roles of human research ethics committees in minimizing therapeutic misconception.
