Mesothelae, or primitively segmented trapdoor spiders, form the most basal clade among living spiders. In Southeast Asia, Liphistius is the only genus recognized in the extant family Liphistiidae. Liphistius taxonomy and species identification are based largely on characters of the genitalia; however, the female genitalia show high intraspecific variation, males are rarely collected, and the phylogenetic relationships among the 69 described Liphistius species are unresolved. Here, we focused on the Liphistius of Thailand, including 37 described and numerous undescribed species in four species groups. We generated sequences from five loci (COI , 16S, H3 , 28S, and ITS2) for 162 specimens from 52 sites in Thailand and Myanmar to reconstruct phylogenetic relationships, infer historical biogeography, and delimit species. The five-locus data set resolved nearly all species and species group relationships and was mostly congruent with morphology-based classifications. Ancestral area reconstruction suggested that Liphistius originated in Sibumasu (Siam–Burma–Malaysia–Sumatra) and diversified into several species groups, four (birmanicus , bristowei , linang , and trang) of which are found in Thailand. Speciation within Liphistius occurred in the area corresponding to their current distribution. All delimitation methods tested (ASAP, GMYC, PTP, STACEY and BFD) delimited specimens from discrete locations as separate species; variation in the number of species proposed (ranging from 53 to 72) stemmed from variation in delimitation of sympatric cryptic species. Lepidonotopodinae is a subfamily of Polynoidae endemic to deep-sea chemosynthetic ecosystems around the world. Nevertheless, their species composition and phylogeny have only been systematically studied in hydrothermal vents of the Eastern and Western Pacific. Here, we morphologically and genetically examined worms in Lepidonotopodinae from vents across three Indian Ocean ridges, revealing two new Branchinotogluma species (B. jiaolongae sp. nov. and B. kaireiensis sp. nov.) and two new Levensteiniella species (L. pettiboneae sp. nov. and L. longqiensis sp. nov.). Primary morphological characters distinguishing them from other congeners include the number and arrangement of both pharyngeal papillae and ventral papillae. The reconstructed molecular phylogeny of Lepidonotopodinae supports a monophyletic Levensteiniella , with the two new Indian Ocean species recovered as sisters. As revealed in previous studies, a paraphyletic Branchinotogluma was also found, with the three Indian Ocean species separated into distinct clades with sister-relationships to species from the Mid-Atlantic, Alarcon Rise, and Manus Basin, respectively. This indicates three separate historical invasions to Indian Ocean vents. Our findings increase the number of Indian Ocean Lepidonotopodinae worms to seven, now the most diverse annelid group there, and help to elucidate the biodiversity, distribution, and biogeography of this subfamily in the Indian Ocean. In this study, we present the first integrative revision of the Boreal and Arctic calcareous sponges of the genus Leucosolenia with a specific focus on its biodiversity in the White Sea. The material for this work included a combination of newly collected specimens from different regions of the North-East Atlantic and the White Sea and historical museum collections. An integrative analysis was implemented based on vast morphological data (light microscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopy), microbiome observations, ecological data, accompanied by molecular phylogenetic and species' delimitation analyses based on three nuclear markers (28S rRNA, 18S rRNA, and histone 3). We demonstrate that Leucosolenia complicata , previously reported from Arctic waters, is restricted to the North-East Atlantic, while in the Arctic, Leucosolenia diversity is represented by at least four species: Leucosolenia corallorrhiza , Leucosolenia variabilis , and two new species, one of which is described herein under the name Leucosolenia creepae sp. nov.. The molecular phylogeny analysis supports the species identity of these species. In addition to conventional morphological characters, new informative fine morphological characters (skeleton and oscular crown organization; cytological structure, including morphotypes of symbiotic bacteria) were found, providing a baseline for further revision of this group in other regions. When gene flow has been restricted between populations, the genetic structure of such species often reflects geohistory and climate changes. Populations of species inhabiting high-altitude regions, known as 'Sky Islands', are isolated and exhibit restricted gene flow, so they often have habitat-specific genetic structures that correspond to their surrounding geographical structures. Here we focus on a limnephilid caddisfly, Rivulophilus sakaii , which inhabits the alpine zone of Japan. Phylogenetic analyses were conducted based on the mtDNA COI and 16S rRNA regions, and the nDNA 18S rRNA, 28S rRNA, CAD , EF1-α , and POL-II regions; the results indicated three phylogeographically differentiated intraspecific lineages. Haplotype network and demographic analyses based on the mtDNA COI region suggested the size of the respective isolated populations has stabilized. This suggests that mountain formation in the Japanese Archipelago due to volcanic activity has resulted in barriers to migration and dispersal between high-altitude aquatic insect populations. This was inferred to be an effect of Quaternary climate changes that caused vertical distributional shifts following mountain formation, resulting in repeated connection and fragmentation of the populations. This is important supporting information with regard to discussing the effects and functions of geohistory and climatic changes on the phylogenetic evolution of organisms presently inhabiting interglacial 'Sky Islands'. The Australian continent has experienced progressive aridification since the Miocene, spurring recent radiations of arid-adapted lineages and the likely decline of mesic biotic groups. While examples of the former have been relatively well-documented, post-Miocene declines of non-arid sclerophyllous floras are less well understood. Here, we present a well-sampled time-calibrated nuclear phylogeny (140 accessions representing 60/65 species) of an Australian plant genus (Cryptandra Sm.: Rhamnaceae) and using ancestral range reconstructions and diversification analyses, elucidate its evolutionary history through space and time. We used high-throughput sequencing to recover 30 orthologous nuclear loci and BioGeoBEARS to infer ancestral areas. We show that the present-day distribution of Cryptandra can be explained by multiple vicariance events followed by in situ diversification with little exchange between regions. All diversification models show a speciation rate decline in Cryptandra after its radiation in the Miocene (c. 23 Mya). This coincides with aridification episodes across Australia and indicates that diversification of this genus has been negatively affected by the expansion of aridity. We also show that there were no significant differences in diversification rates between spinescent and non-spinescent Cryptandra lineages, suggesting that spinescent lineages may be the legacies of selection from extinct megaherbivores. Cherries (subg. Cerasus) belong to Prunus s.l. (Rosaceae) and are widely distributed in temperate and subtropical regions of the Northern Hemisphere. Given its ornamental and edible functions, it is a hugely preferred germplasm resource for human societies. However, the interspecific phylogenetic relationships, divergence times, and routes of this subgenus remain unclear. To reveal its enigmatic and intricate evolutionary history, we newly sequenced 12 subg. Cerasus species, reconstructed the plastome phylogeny with 24 previously published subg. Cerasus species. This study supports that subg. Cerasus split into five clades, among which P. mahaleb is the basal group of subg. Cerasus ; P. campanulata is genetically distantly related to P. cerasoides and is not recommended for treatment as a variety of the latter; P. subhirtella is involved in the speciation of P. yedoensis. Molecular dating and ancestral area reconstructions infer that subg. Cerasus originated in the Eastern Mediterranean–Central Asia before 11.57 Mya (95% HPD = 5.34–19.1 Mya) and subsequently spread into the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (QTP) and adjacent regions. The first dispersal event of modern subg. Cerasus was facilitated by 'out-of-QTP', colonizing North America across the Bering Land Bridge and re-dispersing into Europe from the Late Miocene to Pliocene and forming the initial distribution pattern of extant subg. Cerasus in the Pliocene; The end of the Quaternary glacial period witnessed a second dispersal event, and core subg. Sharpshooters (Cicadellinae), a large subfamily of the Cicadellidae, exhibit a global distribution and a broad array of ecological preferences. To explore the phylogenetic relationships and roles of global historical, biotic and biogeographic processes in the diversification of sharpshooters, we analysed DNA sequence data from three mitochondrial and two nuclear genes for 243 taxa representing all Cicadellinae tribes, generic groups, regional faunas and data of geographic distributions of sharpshooter species compiled from online databases and available literature. The maximum likelihood (ML) and Bayesian inference (BI) analyses strongly support the monophyletic clade including Cicadellinae and Phereurininae. Divergence time estimates and biogeographic analyses suggest that sharpshooters originated in the Neotropical region or were more widespread in Gondwana during the Early Cretaceous and diversified through a combination of ancient vicariance and dispersal following the evolution of angiosperm‐dominated habitats. The earliest divergence during the Cretaceous gave rise to Oriental and New World lineages, the latter of which subsequently dispersed into the Old World and gave rise to the diverse endemic fauna of Madagascar. The Oriental lineage shows high diversity and endemism in tropical Asia and the Pacific, with striking distributional discontinuities in Wallacea. These results suggest that a combination of environmental and evolutionary factors including continental‐scale vicariance, long‐distance dispersal and diversification of terrestrial microhabitats and host plants may explain the diversity of the modern sharpshooter fauna. The family Muridae represents the largest, most diverse and successful of all groups of mammals. Here we infer the phylogenetic relationships and historical biogeography for the Iranian murid rodents, which consist in twelve species distributed in three subfamilies and seven genera. Molecular dating analyses using a relaxed Bayesian molecular clock support the monophyly of belonging to Murinae, Gerbillinae and Deomyinae and allow to set up divergence dates between them around 18.29 Ma (Million years ago). According to our results, murines may have originated approximately 12.28 Ma and the diversification of most of their evolutionary lineages may have taken place between 10 and 3 Ma, which is consistent with the fossil record. Our results provide strong support for the tribes Apodemyini and Rattini (Murinae) but the monophyly of the genus Meriones belonging to the Gerbillinae is questioned. Historical biogeographic analysis supports an area covering most of Iran, as the most likely ancestral geographic origin for gerbillines whereas that inferred for murines is restricted to the West and North of Iran. All in all, Iran seems to have acted as a corridor for faunal exchanges between the Afrotropic and Saharo-Arabian realms and the Indomalayan realm as well as between Central Asia and the Mediterranean regions. Whilst conducting surveys of lignicolous microfungi in Yunnan Province, we collected a large number of taxa that resemble Montagnula (Didymosphaeriaceae, Pleosporales). Our phylogenetic study on Montagnula involved analysing sequence data from ribosomal RNA genes (nc18S, nc28S, ITS) and protein-coding genes (rpb2, tef1-a). We present a biphasic approach (morphological and molecular phylogenetic evidence) that supports the recognition of four new species in Montagnula viz., M. lijiangensis, M. menglaensis, M. shangrilana and M. thevetiae. The global diversity of Montagnula is also inferred from metabarcoding data and published records based on field observations. Metabarcoding data from GlobalFungi and field observations provided insights into the global diversity and distribution patterns of Montagnula. Studies conducted in Asia, Australia, Europe, and North America revealed a concentration of Montagnula species, suggesting regional variations in ecological preferences and distribution. Montagnula species were found on various substrates, with sediments yielding a high number of sequences. Poaceae emerged as a significant contributor, indicating a potential association between Montagnula species and grasses. Culture-based investigations from previously published data revealed Montagnula species associations with 105 plant genera (in 45 plant families), across 55 countries, highlighting their wide ecological range and adaptability. This study enhances our understanding of the taxonomy, distribution, and ecological preferences of Montagnula species. It emphasizes their role in the decomposition of organic matter in grasslands and savannah systems and suggests further investigation into their functional roles in ecosystem processes. A new species of freshwater flatworm of the genus Dugesia from Guangdong Province in China is described through an integrative approach, including molecular and morphological data, as well as mitochondrial genome analysis. The new species, Dugesia ancoraria Zhu & Wang, sp. nov. , is characterised by: (a) a highly asymmetrical penis papilla, provided with a hunchback-like dorsal bump; (b) a short duct between seminal vesicle and ejaculatory duct; and (c) a postero-ventral course of the ejaculatory duct, which opens to the exterior at the subterminal, ventral part of the penis papilla. The molecular phylogenetic tree obtained from the concatenated dataset of four DNA markers (18S rDNA , ITS-1 , 28S rDNA , COI) facilitated determination of the phylogenetic position of the new species, which shares a sister-group relationship with a small clade, comprising D. notogaea Sluys & Kawakatsu, 1998 from Australia and D. bengalensis Kawakatsu, 1983 from India. The circular mitogenome of the new species is 17,705 bp in length, including 12 protein coding genes, two ribosomal genes, and 22 transfer RNAs. Haminoea are herbivorous, coastal snails occurring in temperate and tropical waters of the Atlantic and Eastern Pacific oceans, with one species present in temperate South Africa (Indian Ocean). The genus is taxonomically difficult as several available nominal species were introduced based on shell descriptions alone, or described based on subtle differences in morpho‐anatomical features, without a phylogenetic molecular framework. Fifteen species are currently accepted as valid in recent scientific literature and field guides (eight Eastern Atlantic, one temperate Indian Ocean, four Western Atlantic and three Eastern Pacific). Here we generate the first complete phylogeny (Bayesian and Maximum Likelihood) of this genus based on multilocus molecular data (COI, 12S rRNA, 16S rRNA, 28S rRNA) using a taxon set accumulated over a period of 15 years, coupled with species delimitation analyses methods (ABGD, ASAP, bPTP) and morpho‐anatomical studies. The goal of this study is to provide insights into the taxonomy, phylogenetic relationships and geographical distributions of species while generating a framework for future systematic reviews of the genus, as well as to study speciation and historical biogeography. Our results rendered four possible hypotheses of species diversity: with 14, 15, 19 and 20 candidate species and point to the fact that several taxa presently regarded as valid might be conspecific (e.g. H. orteai–H. templadoi–H. exigua; and H. alfredensis–H. antillarum–H. orbignyana), while highlighting the existence of a complex of four or five species often identified as H. elegans. The genus Chanohirata Hayashi & Machida, including the herein synonymized monotypic genus Reticuluma Cheng & Li, is the second most speciose genus in the tribe Penthimiini after Penthimia Germar and is almost exclusively endemic to China. This study presents the first phylogeny of Chanohirata based on three mitochondrial markers (cytochrome c oxidase subunit I and II and 16S ribosomal RNA) and one nuclear fragment (28S ribosomal RNA). Reticulumasyn. n. is recovered nested within Chanohirata with strong support. Reticuluma is, therefore, proposed as a junior synonym of Chanohirata, and a new combination is proposed: Chanohirata citrana (Cheng & Li) comb. n. Molecular species delimitation analyses were conducted by combining six molecular delimitation methods with morphological evidence. The results of the species delimitation analyses confirm the status of eight described species of Chanohirata and support the recognition of three new species: Chanohirata cornicula Wang & Zhang sp. n., Chanohirata elongata Wang & Zhang sp. n. and Chanohirata serrata Wang & Zhang sp. n. Molecular dating and biogeographic analyses suggest that Chanohirata likely originated during the late Eocene in southern China. During the late Miocene to early Pleistocene, the uplift of the Himalayas and Tibetan Plateau and climatic oscillations probably triggered several dispersal and vicariance events in Chanohirata lineages, leading to most speciation events. Philonthina (2864 species in 74 genera) represents almost one‐half of the diversity of Staphylinini and is the largest of its subtribes. Most Philonthina species are found in tropical areas, but the origin of this diversity is still not well understood, mainly because their systematics belongs to a past era of taxonomy. Such is the case of a group of genera, most of them endemic to the Neotropical region (NT), whose monophyly has been repeatedly confirmed and which constitutes the so‐called Neotropical lineage (NL). However, basal relationships have not been clarified, neither for Philonthina nor its NL. The NL includes ∼300 species and 26 genera, but two of them (Belonuchus Nordmann and Paederomimus Sharp) account for two‐thirds of its species. Here, using the largest molecular‐based phylogeny of Philonthina and its NL to date, a time‐calibrated phylogeny, and ancestral range reconstructions for the NL, we explore the evolutionary history of Philonthina with a focus on its NL to reveal their early evolution and diversification in the NT. We show that Philonthina originated during the Late Cretaceous ∼ 67.6 Ma and diversified into five main lineages mostly during the Eocene. The NL originated in northwestern South America (SA) and the Andes not earlier than 64.2 Ma from a Laurasian lineage present in SA ∼49.1–69.9 Ma. Shortly afterward, that is, 39.9–56.9 Ma, the NL diversified into the Andean clade and the most species‐rich Belonuchus‐Paederomimus group. Our analyses recover northwestern SA and the Andes as the primary centers of diversification. The bipolar distribution of fish leeches (Piscicolidae) has been considered and discussed by leech biologists for a long time. All cases of putative bipolar ranges of related taxa that occur in cold and temperate waters of both hemispheres and are absent in the tropics have been morphology-based hypotheses. Here, we present, for the first time, an instance of bipolar distribution substantiated by morphological and molecular data. The latter include the mitochondrial genes 12S rRNA, COI, ND1 and tRNA Leu, and the nuclear 28S rRNA. A new genus and species of Antarctic piscicolids, Austroplatybdellina prodiga, is described. The new leech was part of a Boreal-Arctic monophyletic group that is informally called 'classic platybdellins'. That clade is the core of the non-monophyletic subfamily Platybdellinae. Austroplatybdellina prodiga gen. nov. sp. nov. was further classified as a member of a monophyletic group along with two Boreal genera, Crangonobdella and Beringobdella, which share a number of systematically important morphological features with its newly described relative. It is hypothesized that the Boreal ancestor of the new leech crossed warm tropical waters and colonized the Antarctic. The colonization was relatively recent as the low genetic distance between A. prodiga and its Boreal sister species suggests. This migration can be viewed as a return of a Boreal descendant of the Antarctic ancestor of Piscicolidae to the area of origin of the entire family, which follows from the basal position of the Antarctic Megaliobdella szidati in the family phylogenetic tree. A new species, Achromadora porosa, is described and illustrated based on morphology, morphometric and molecular characterization supplemented with scanning electron microscopic observations. Achromadora porosa sp. n. was extracted from the soil around the roots of Prosopis juliflora. The new species is characterized by numerous linearly arranged pores over the body on lateral sides, and occasionally on ventral side, indiscernible in LM; somatic setae absent; six lips, with six inner and six outer labial small, setose sensilla, nearly of equal shape and size, in two circlets and four slender, small, setose cephalic sensilla arranged closely to the circle of outer labial sensilla; amphidial fovea large, spiral with 1.5-2.0 coils, at the stoma base or 7–11 annules from anterior end; stoma funnel-shaped, asymmetrical, cheilostom divided into twelve ribs, a pair of ribs arranged in between two lips; prerectum absent; tail strongly arcuate ventrally with terminal spinneret. The phylogenetic analyses based on Bayesian inference and Maximum-likelihood method using partial SSU 18s rDNA showed close relationships among congeners of the genus besides revealing the status of family Achromadoridae with regard to families Cyatholaimidae, Selachinematidae and Ethmolaimidae. The genus Gymnodinium contains more than 230 extant species, approximately 30% of which have not been reported since their original description. Approximately eight Gymnodinium species have been reported or described in the coastal waters of China. This work reports the presence of Gymnodinium trapeziforme from Jiaozhou Bay, China, in 2020, and its morphological and phylogenetic characterization by using light and scanning electron microscopy and systematic analysis based on partial LSU rDNA sequences. We observed the typical diagnostic features of G. trapeziforme, including a small size, biconical to ovoid shape, and a sulcal extension intruded to the epicone and connected to the horseshoe-shaped apical structure complex (ASC). Additionally, we firstly observed that the ASC consisted of three parallel series of vesicles, with the central one possessing knobs, and having more than 10 amphiesmal vesicles within the ASC. The nucleus was cucurbit-shaped, and the amphiesmal vesicles covering the cell surface, which would be peeled off for the cells in stress. While our molecular phylogeny inferred with the maximum likelihood (ML) and Bayesian inference (BI) confirmed the conspecificity of our isolate with the holotype G. trapeziforme (accession No. EF192414), we found a difference of 14 bases in the D1–D6 domains of the LSU rDNA sequences between the two entities, which indicates a detectable speciation of the two populations. Our work provides a detailed morphological and molecular characterization of G. trapeziforme that was isolated from the coastal water of China, which also broadens the geographical distribution of this species. Species of Cetrelia delimited based on chemical and morphological characters have been largely supported by subsequent phylogenetic analysis of molecular data. While a robust, taxonomically well sampled global phylogeny for Cetrelia exists, geographic sampling to date has focused on Europe and East Asia. Here we use extensive field, herbarium and laboratory study to examine the distributions and identities of the taxa occuring in eastern North America. The presence of three species in the region is confirmed with molecular data (C. chicitae, C. monachorum, C. olivetorum). While a fourth species (C. cetrarioides) also occurs based on phenotypic data; efforts to obtain sequences were unsuccessful. The subpopulations of Cetrelia species in the region have contrasting frequency and distribution patterns relative to disjunct European subpopulations. Quantification of frequency of Cetrelia occurrence compared to an index of habitat quality revealed that all species have a strong affinity to high quality habitats, reflecting broader connection between lichen species richness and disturbance found in numerous previous studies. The trends detected in Cetrelia are unlikely restricted to this genus and we suggest that large-scale detailed quantitative studies in local-scale occurrence over time are needed to address significant gaps in knowledge to advance lichen conservation. We integrated large sample sizes, morphometric and molecular data, and phylogenetic and species delimitation analyses to test the 17-year-old hypothesis that only two species of whisker-cheeked suckermouth catfishes (genus Lasiancistrus) occur in river drainages west of the Andes Mountains. Our results reject this hypothesis, demonstrating that, in addition to the previously recognized Lasiancistrus guacharote from Lake Maracaibo, a Lasiancistrus clade from west of the Sierra de Perijá contains at least four allopatric, genetically differentiated and morphologically distinct lineages. One of these lineages had no previous name associated with it and is described here as the new species Lasiancistrus wiwa. Phylogenetic relationships and geographical distributions of all five trans-Andean lineages are concordant with watershed boundaries and major mountain ranges that form these boundaries, with the following five freshwater basins or regions each containing a single species: Lake Maracaibo (L. guacharote), Rancheria River basin (L. wiwa), Upper and Middle Magdalena River and lower Cauca River basins (Lasiancistrus volcanensis), Upper Cauca River basin (Lasiancistrus caucanus) and Pacific Coastal watersheds between central Colombia and central Panama (Lasiancistrus mayoloi). Evolutionary relationships among these lineages suggest that Andean uplift-mediated vicariance contributed significantly to the cladogenesis and allopatric distributions of these fishes. The genus Tamarix comprises trees and shrubs that grow mainly in saline habitats. Previous phylogenetic analyses have shown incongruence between different gene trees, which suggest that hybridization processes might have been present in the past. However, the complex pattern of colonization of the Western Mediterranean region has yet to be understood, and no dated phylogeny that reconciles the different gene trees is currently available. The objectives of the study are: (i) to reconstruct the first dated species tree of the genus Tamarix from previously published data, (ii) to evaluate the occurrence of past hybridization, and (iii) to discuss biogeographical implications, mainly focused on the Mediterranean Basin. Our results show that the separation between Tamarix and Myricaria occurred 28.49 Mya, and the crown age of the genus Tamarix is dated at 16.65 Mya. Past hybridization processes might be present in three species: Tamarix amplexicaulis , Tamarix canariensis , and Tamarix minoa. Various colonization events are probable in the Western Mediterranean: a first colonization in the Early Miocene, Tamarix africana during the Late Miocene, and Tamarix boveana and Tamarix gallica during the Pleistocene. In addition, the genus Tamarix migrated to south-western Africa around 5.8 Mya, probably through an ancient arid African corridor, or a long-distance dispersal event. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sri Lanka's biota is derived largely from Southeast Asian lineages which immigrated via India following its early-Eocene contact with Laurasia. The island is now separated from southeastern India by the 30 km wide Palk Strait which, during sea-level low-stands, was bridged by the 140 km-wide Palk Isthmus. Consequently, biotic ingress and egress were mediated largely by the climate of the isthmus. Because of their dependence on perennial aquatic habitats, freshwater fish are useful models for biogeographic studies. Here we investigate the timing and dynamics of the colonization of—and diversification on—Sri Lanka by a group of four closely-related genera of cyprinid fishes (Puntius sensu lato). We construct a molecular phylogeny based on two mitochondrial and two nuclear gene markers, conduct divergence timing analyses and ancestral-range estimations to infer historical biogeography, and use haplotype networks to discern phylogeographic patterns. The origin of Puntius s.l. is dated to ~ 20 Ma. The source of diversification of Puntius s.l. is Sri Lanka-Peninsular India. Species confined to perhumid rainforests show strong phylogeographic structure, while habitat generalists show little or no such structure. Ancestral range estimations for Plesiopuntius bimaculatus and Puntius dorsalis support an 'Out of Sri Lanka' scenario. Sri Lankan Puntius s.l. derive from multiple migrations across the Palk Isthmus between the early Miocene and the late Pleistocene. Species dependent on an aseasonal climate survived aridification in rainforest refugia in the island's perhumid southwest and went on to recolonize the island and even southern India when pluvial conditions resumed. Our results support an historical extinction of Sri Lanka's montane aquatic fauna, followed by a recent partial recolonization of the highlands, showing also that headwater stream capture facilitated dispersal across basin boundaries. The Asian box turtles of the Cuora galbinifrons complex (C. galbinifrons, C. bourreti, and C. picturata) rank among the most endangered chelonian species in the world. Despite several previous studies, the phylogenetic relationships and species boundaries of this complex remain a matter for dispute due to a shortage of field-collected samples for genetic validation, observed discordance between mitochondrial and nuclear markers, and reported intergradation zones combined with a strong tendency of hybridization in the genus. Here, we re-investigate the relationships and potential hybridization between the species of the C. galbinifrons complex based on the most comprehensive dataset to date consisting of 394 morphologically identified specimens (136 C. galbinifrons, 200 C. bourreti, 49 C. picturata, and nine individuals allegedly from Hainan). The turtles mainly came from assurance colonies as well as from zoological and private collections across the USA and Europe. Bayesian and Maximum Likelihood analyses of a concatenated mitochondrial dataset (COI and ND4 plus adjacent tRNA genes) yielded almost identical topologies, supporting three major clades corresponding to C. galbinifrons, C. bourreti, and C. picturata, respectively. In accordance with previous studies, C. bourreti represented the sister clade to C. galbinifrons and these two clades together were sister to C. picturata. Haplotype networks revealed pronounced mitochondrial divergences between the taxa. STRUCTURE and PCA analyses using 12 microsatellite loci also confirmed three distinct clusters that are in agreement with the recognized species. Only a few specimens with admixed ancestry (hybrids) or mismatched mitochondrial identity were revealed, suggesting extremely limited gene flow among the three species. The leaf‐roller moth tribe Grapholitini comprises about 1200 described species and contains numerous notorious pests of fruits and seeds. The phylogeny of the tribe has been little studied using contemporary methods, and the monophyly of several genera remains questionable. In order to provide a more robust phylogenetic framework for the group, we conducted a multiple‐gene phylogenetic analysis of 104 species representing 27 genera of Grapholitini and 29 outgroup species. Divergence time, ancestral area, and host plant usage were also inferred to explore evolutionary trends in the tribe. Our analyses indicate that Larisa and Corticivora, traditionally assigned to Grapholitini, are best excluded from the tribe. After removal of these two genera, the tribe is found to be monophyletic, represented by two major lineages—a Dichrorampha clade and a Cydia clade, the latter of which can be divided into seven generic groups. The genus Grapholita was found to be polyphyletic, comprising three different clades, and we propose three genera to accommodate these groups: Grapholita (sensu stricto), Aspila (formerly a subgenus of Grapholita) and Ephippiphora (formerly considered a synonym of Grapholita). We summarize each generic group, including related genera not included in our analysis, providing morphological, pheromone and food plant characters that support particular branches within the molecular hypotheses. Biogeographical analyses indicate that Grapholitini probably originated in the Nearctic, Afrotropical and Neotropical regions in the Lutetian of the middle Eocene (ca. 44.3 Ma). Our results also indicate that most groups in Grapholitini originated from Fabaceae‐feeding monophagous or oligophagous ancestors, and that host plant shifts probably promoted species diversification within the tribe. The alpine butterfly genus Parnassius is a popular model group for studying biogeography, evolution, conservation biology, and ecology. Despite its scientific importance, a comprehensive and robust phylogeny of this group is still lacking. In this study, we used an amplicon capture strategy to sequence 144 nuclear protein‐coding genes and complete mitochondrial genomes for 60 Parnassius specimens covering 42 species and all eight subgenera of Parnassius. Our results strongly support the monophyly of the genus and eight subgenera. The relationships among subgenera are robustly resolved as (Sachaia, (Kreizbergia, (Driopa, (Parnassius, (Tadumia, Lingamius), (Kailasius, Koramius))))), which is different from all previous results. Biogeographic and divergence time analyses indicate that the ancestor of Parnassius originated in an area including the Himalayas and Tibetan Plateau (HTP) and Mongolian steppes in the middle Miocene approximately 13.19 Mya. The middle Miocene global cooling event (starting from ~13.9 Mya) probably provided climatic opportunities for the diversification of cold‐adapted Parnassius. The ancestral state reconstruction analyses suggest that the ancestor of Parnassius butterflies most likely lived in a medium elevational area (2000–4000 m) and fed on Papaveraceae plants. The host shift from Papaveraceae to Crassulaceae in the subgenus Parnassius increases the species diversity of this subgenus, concurring with the "escape and radiate" hypothesis. Overall, our work provides valuable nuclear gene and mitochondrial genome data and a robust phylogenetic framework of Parnassius for future studies of the taxonomy, evolution, and ecology of this group. The once diverse family Pleurotomariidae had a widespread global distribution spanning shallow-water faunas throughout the Mesozoic but is presently known only from bathyal habitats along the western margins of the Atlantic and Indo-Pacific Oceans at temperate and tropical latitudes. We evaluate the relationships among surviving lineages of Pleurotomariidae using partial sequences of two mitochondrial genes and three nuclear genes for 22 of the 45 named Recent species-level taxa for which sequence data were available for two or more genes. Phylogenetic analyses partition these species among five lineages, including the new genus Bouchetitrochus n. gen. that is described herein. Of the five lineages, two are present in both the western Atlantic and the western Indo-Pacific Oceans, one is endemic to the western Atlantic and two are endemic to the western Indo-Pacific. Antrophyum is one of the largest genera of vittarioid ferns (Pteridaceae) and is most diverse in tropical Asia and the Pacific Islands, but also occurs in temperate Asia, Australia, tropical Africa and the Malagasy region. The only monographic study of Antrophyum was published more than a century ago and a modern assessment of its diversity is lacking. Here, we reconstructed a comprehensively sampled and robustly supported phylogeny for the genus based on four chloroplast markers using Bayesian inference, maximum likelihood and maximum parsimony analyses. We then explored the evolution of the genus from the perspectives of morphology, systematics and historical biogeography. We investigated nine critical morphological characters using a morphometric approach and reconstructed their evolution on the phylogeny. We describe four new species and provide new insight into species delimitation. We currently recognize 34 species for the genus and provide a key to identify them. A recent molecular phylogeny of the genus Crematogaster reclassified some members of the former subgenera Paracrema and Physocrema into the C. inflata -group, now comprised of five species: C. ampullaris , C. inflata , C. modiglianii , C. onusta and C. subcircularis. Here, a molecular analysis of the Crematogaster inflata -group and eight other species of the former subgenus Physocrema (C. aurita , C. difformis , C. mucronata , C. physothorax , C. sewardi , C. tanakai , C. vacca and C. yamanei) is conducted using a total of c. 4 kb of sequence data from six nuclear protein-coding genes and two mitochondrial genes. Monophyly of the C. inflata -group is strongly supported. A revised morphological delineation of the subgroups is proposed, supported by the molecular phylogeny: three morphologically distinct subgroups, the C. difformis -subgroup, the C. vacca -subgroup and the C. inflata -subgroup. Molecular dating and biogeographical analyses indicate that the C. inflata -group originated in the Sundaic region around the Middle Miocene 12 Mya and diversified from the Late Miocene to Pliocene. Ancestral state reconstructions indicate that the C. inflata -group diversified from an ancestor with a swollen propodeum and circular-shaped metapleural gland opening. We investigated the entire butterfly fauna of the Samoan Archipelago (Pacific Ocean) by combining COI barcode sequences for specimens from these islands with those available in repositories at larger biogeographic scale. Haplotype networks and a generalized mixed Yule‐coalescent (GMYC) model were applied to identify evolutionary significant units (ESUs). The ESUs from Samoan islands were compared with ESUs of the same or sister taxa regionally and worldwide to explore the level of endemicity and of congruence between established taxonomy and COI barcodes. The level of ESUs endemicity was similar to that shown by species and subspecies. Australia was the most frequent origin for Samoan lineages, followed by Orient‐Asia. When comparing the agreement and mismatch between established taxonomy and ESUs between the Australia‐Oceania region and Europe and North America, the COI molecular marker revealed a similar performance in taxonomic identification. Despite this overall convergent pattern, the degree of mtDNA divergence and the analysis of functional traits suggested that the mechanisms producing patterns of genetic differentiation in temperate butterflies over ancient continental lands differ to those occurring across a vast ocean into geologically young islands. Mechanisms on Samoan islands include relatively recent and exceptional oceanic dispersal, possibly followed by repeated extinction events. In the Australia‐Oceania region we found a similar fraction of species showing introgression with the maintenance of phenotypic differences as it occurs on the mainland, but the phenomenon was limited to sectors of each species distribution area. Bujurquina is the most widely distributed and species-rich genus of cichlids in the western Amazon of South America, yet beyond a few taxonomic studies remains almost completely unknown. We use a newly obtained collection of Bujurquina specimens which for the first time provides a representative sampling throughout its whole distribution area. Based on morphological and molecular data, we provide the first phylogenetic analyses of the genus, review the diversity of species in the genus and interpret its evolution with focus on the Bujurquina fauna of Ecuador. The Bujurquina fauna of Ecuador presently includes only two supposedly endemic species (B. zamorensis and B. pardus) plus based on some studies two to three Peruvian species, which we find to be erroneous. Our results identify in Ecuador at least 12 species, 11 of which are also identified in the molecular phylogeny. The large-scale phylogeny and biogeography of Bujurquina in the western Amazon are found to be in very good agreement with geological evolution of the western Amazon. Over the smaller scale of the Ecuadorian Amazon, our results for the first time reveal a complex paleogeography with a reconstructed river network reconfiguration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The diversification of tapeworms of the subfamily Gangesiinae (Cestoda: Proteocephalidae), parasites of catfishes (order Siluriformes), is assessed using molecular and morphological evidence. A two-gene (lsr DNA and COI) phylogenetic analysis of all species of Gangesiinae (except Gangesia margolisi) resulted in a basal polytomy that included several lineages of Gangesiinae and Acanthotaeniinae. Palaeogeological events, along with host-shifting and dispersal, played prominent roles in the evolution of these tapeworms. Gangesia radiated through two major lineages in the Indomalayan and Palaearctic regions. Morphological changes during this radiation also included secondary loss of diagnostic morphological features of the genus, as in Gangesia mukutmanipurensis sp. nov. , which lacks hooks and hooklets on its scolex. An updated key to the genera placed in Gangesiinae is provided and two new synonyms are proposed. A basal polytomy involving some of the potentially oldest lineages of Gangesiinae prevents firm conclusions regarding the ancestral area of origin of these tapeworms. Nevertheless, when the distribution and host-associations of Gangesiinae are considered in the context of the historical biogeography of their catfish hosts, the Indomalayan region appears to have been the ancestral homeland and a major centre of diversification of these tapeworms, with range expansions in western and northern parts of Eurasia and Africa. We describe the current state of speciation in the species complex of the marine gastropod Patelloida saccharina , using mitochondrial COI , 16S RNA, nuclear histone 3 gene and single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers from 165 specimens collected from 37 localities across the Japanese archipelago. In total, 28 unique COI haplotypes, 16 16S haplotypes, 11 histone 3 haplotypes and 148 734 SNPs were obtained. Genetic assignments and phylogenetic trees recovered three genetically distinct lineages: P. saccharina saccharina , P. saccharina lanx and an unknown P. sp. from Shionomisaki, Wakayama Prefecture. The divergence between P. saccharina saccharina and P. saccharina lanx was estimated to have occurred around 44 000 years ago—too recent to have accumulated the morphological differences that have confounded taxonomic identification. Continuous gene exchange after an initial split is suggested based on demographic history analyses, which allowed for introgression of the P. saccharina lanx genome and the proliferation of intermediate individuals. Speciation, despite the existence of a contact zone in the Ryukyu Islands, possibly occurred due to the eventual reproductive isolation that followed the initial split with gene flow. Patelloida saccharina saccharina and P. saccharina lanx were strongly supported by our results as two separate species, and a revision of the current taxonomic descriptions based on their phylogeny, demographic history and species distribution is proposed. A new thecate, photosynthetic, sand-dwelling marine dinoflagellate, Coutea sabulosa gen. & sp. nov., observed in various locations from temperate to subtropical areas, is described based on detailed morphological and molecular data of material from Germany and Kuwait. Cells of C. sabulosa are oval, small (14.5–28.3 µm long and 11.1–18.0 µm wide), dorsoventrally compressed, and show a conspicuous apical hook projection pointing to the right. The epitheca is smaller than the hypotheca and the cingulum is ascending, about 3× its width. The thecal plate pattern is unusual and interpreted as APC, 4ʹ, 3a, 7ʹʹ, 5c, 4s, 6ʹʹʹ, 2ʹʹʹʹ. The APC comprises a narrow Po plate with a slit opening, located on the right-dorsal side, and it is covered by a projection of the first apical plate. Morphologically, the plate pattern has some affinities with Amphidiniella sedentaria, a sand-dwelling dinoflagellate species of roughly the same size and gross outline. However, the two taxa differ from each other in shape, size of epitheca and organization of the APC. They possess the same number of apical, precingular, postcingular and antapical plates but their relative sizes, shapes and especially the arrangement differs. Molecular phylogeny inferred from concatenated ribosomal genes reveals that C. sabulosa forms a well supported clade in the core dinoflagellates, but it is not related to any other existing taxa and diverges widely from A. sedentaria. As recently circumscribed, Sesamum was rendered monophyletic by including the three segregate genera Ceratotheca , Dicerocaryum and Josephinia. Here, the monophyly of Sesamum and the currently accepted infrageneric taxa was tested using expanded phylogenetic analyses. In addition, nine taxonomically useful morphological characters were optimized on the resulting phylogenetic tree to assess their evolutionary pattern. The phylogenetic analyses support the expanded circumscription of Sesamum and the monophyly of Sesamum section Sesamum relative to Sesamum sections Aptera, Ceratotheca , Chamaesesamum , Dicerocaryum , Josephinia and Sesamoptera. Most sections were retrieved as monophyletic, except Sesamum section Ceratotheca which was shown to be paraphyletic. Character reconstruction infers the ancestor of Sesamum to have had an erect growth habit, simple leaves with entire margins, ovaries with incompletely divided locules, indehiscent capsules that are oblong-quadrangular in lateral view with a beaked apex and winged seeds. Relative to the ancestral states, Sesamum has dehiscent fruits and fully divided locules as synapomorphies, with reversals to the ancestral state (indehiscence, undivided locules) in Sesamum sections Josephinia and Dicerocaryum. The absence of trichomes on mature vegetative parts and the development of lobed leaves are synapomorphies for Sesamum section Sesamopteris. Characters such as dentate and lobulate leaf margins and discoid fruit with horn-like protrusions are homoplastic in Sesamum. Dated phylogeny and ancestral range estimation suggest a southern African origin for the genus with subsequent diversification to tropical Africa, India and Australia. Sesamum has an estimated crown age of 38.1 ± 5.2 Myr with subsequent dispersal scenarios into tropical Africa, Asia and Australia during the Miocene from 24.5 Mya. Coryphoideae are palmate-leaved palms from the family Arecaceae consisting of 46 genera representing 421 species. Although several phylogenetic analyses based on different genomic regions have been carried out on Coryphoideae, a fully resolved molecular phylogenetic tree has not been reported yet. To achieve this, we applied two phylogenetic reconstruction methods: Maximum Likelihood and Bayesian Inference, using amplified sampling by retrieving chloroplast and nuclear DNA sequences from NCBI and adding newly produced sequences from Indian accession into the dataset. The same dataset (chloroplast + nuclear DNA sequences) was used to estimate divergence times and the evolutionary history of Coryphoideae with a Bayesian uncorrelated, lognormal relaxed-clock approach and a Statistical Divergence-Vicariance Analysis method, respectively. The phylogenetic analyses based on a combined chloroplast and nuclear DNA sequence dataset showed well-resolved relationships within the subfamily. Both phylogenetic trees divide Coryphoideae into two main groups: CSPT (Crysophileae, Sabaleae, Phoeniceae, and Trachycarpeae) and the Syncarpous group. These main groups are segregated into eight tribes (Trachycarpeae, Phoeniceae, Sabaleae, Crysophileae, Borasseae, Corypheae, Caryoteae, and Chuniophoeniceae) and four subtribes (Rhapidine, Livistoninae, Hyphaeninae, and Lataniinae) with strong support-values. Most previously unresolved and doubtful relationships within tribes Trachycarpeae and Crysophilieae are now resolved and well-supported. The reconstructed phylogenetic trees support all previous systematic revisions of the subfamily. All Indian sampled species of Arenga, Bentinckia, Hyphaene, and Trachycarpus show close relation with their respective congeneric species. Molecular dating results and integration of biogeography suggest that Coryphoideae originated in Laurasia at ~95.12 Ma and then diverged into the tropical and subtropical regions of the whole world. We explore the phylogenetic position of the Encyclia adenocarpos complex through a multilocus analysis of Encyclia with the following DNA regions: ITS and plastid rpl32-trnL, trnL-F, and ycf1, analyzed under the Bayesian inference and Maximum Parsimony paradigms. We also performed an analysis of reconstruction of ancestral areas, with particular interest in the first diverging lineages of Encyclia. We used an ad hoc regionalization system designed to fit our distributional Encyclia data to reconstruct the ancestral distribution of the genus and the most relevant nodes. The analyses yielded a moderately well-supported topology with the broadest taxonomic Encyclia sampling yet. Our results indicate the Encyclia adenocarpos complex is monophyletic, highly supported, and sister to a large clade with ca. 95% of the species of Encyclia included in the analyses and suggest the clade is composed of several related, fundamentally allopatric species distributed along the Pacific slopes of Megamexico, including a novelty here proposed, Encyclia mariaeugeniae, which is closely related to Encyclia enriquearcilae yet differing in several diagnostic characters, such as a narrower central lobe to the labellum. The novelty was assessed as EN under IUCN criteria. We provide a key to the E. adenocarpos clade. Our Encyclia phylogeny identifies several clades displaying strong geographic signal; some of these are discussed in terms of morphology, ecological preferences, and pollination syndromes. The reconstruction of ancestral areas indicates with high probability that the earliest diverging nodes of Encyclia occurred in Megamexico. Floral variation within clades suggests the genus colonized geographical areas and underwent diversifications to occupy novel pollination syndromes in a pattern of allopatric, similar assemblages of syndromes composed of unrelated taxa. We present a preliminary species list of Encyclia and their distributions along the major biogeographic areas to provide a hypothesis of diversity patterns and the biogeographical areas where the species occur. As we currently understand the genus, Encyclia consists of 213 taxa, including 179 formally proposed species, 10 undescribed ones, and 25 nothotaxa. Simple Summary: Bentinckia is an Indian endemic genus belonging to the tribe Areceae (Arecaceae). This genus contains two species, B. condapanna and B. nicobarica, and both need to be conserved as they come under the threatened category. Bentinckia, along with nine genera, remains unplaced in Areceae. The members of the unplaced Areceae show characteristics corresponding to all the subtribes. Therefore, morphologically it is difficult to assign any subtribes to these genera. Many molecular phylogenetic analyses have reported the relationships within Areceae. However, all of these are unable to show confident position and support for the species. In the present article, we constructed the molecular phylogeny of Areceae based on an appropriate combination of chloroplast and nuclear loci that satisfactorily depicts the phylogenetic positions of all species from Areceae. Phylogeny and evolutionary history disclose that Bentinckia together with unplaced Clinostigma and Cyrostachys show a close relationship with the subtribe Arecinae and might have originated in Eurasia and India. In addition, this study reports a taxonomic revision of Bentinckia. In addition, it provides a new chromosome number (cytotype), i.e. 2n = 30 for B. condapanna. This study will form the very basis for assessing and refining the systematic position of all the species from the tribe Areceae. Bentinckia is a genus of flowering plants which is an unplaced member of the tribe Areceae (Arecaceae). Two species are recognized in the genus, viz. B. condapanna Berry ex Roxb. from the Western Ghats, India, and B. nicobarica (Kurz) Becc. from the Nicobar Islands. This work constitutes taxonomic revision, cytogenetics, molecular phylogeny, and biogeography of the Indian endemic palm genus Bentinckia. The present study discusses the ecology, morphology, taxonomic history, distribution, conservation status, and uses of Bentinckia. A neotype was designated for the name B. condapanna. Cytogenetical studies revealed a new cytotype of B. condapanna representing 2n = 30 chromosomes. Although many phylogenetic reports of the tribe Areceae are available, the relationship within the tribe is still ambiguous. To resolve this, we carried out Bayesian Inference (BI) and Maximum Likelihood (ML) analysis using an appropriate combination of chloroplast and nuclear DNA regions. The same phylogeny was used to study the evolutionary history of Areceae. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that Bentinckia forms a clade with other unplaced members, Clinostigma and Cyrostachys, and together they show a sister relationship with the subtribe Arecinae. Nemognathinae is the most widespread subfamily of Meloidae, with ~600 species, and includes the only blister beetles distributed in Australia and on islands of the western Pacific. Four tribes are recognised based on morphology: Stenoderini, Palaestrini, Horiini and Nemognathini. Using two mitochondrial (16S , COI) and three nuclear markers (CAD , 28S , ITS2), and both maximum likelihood and Bayesian approaches, this study describes the evolutionary history of Nemognathinae based on molecular data for the first time. We provided a fossil-calibrated phylogeny that unravels the phylogenetic relationships among the tribes and among most of the genera, and a reconstruction of the biogeographic history using a parametric approach. Our results recognised the four tribes that were described previously based on morphology and revealed the presence of another well-differentiated clade corresponding to the genus Zoltanzonitis. Phylogenetic relationships among the tribes are well supported, with Stenoderini as the most ancient lineage, followed by Zoltanzonitini, Palaestrini, Horiini and Nemognathini. A few long-standing genera within Nemognathini (Nemognatha , Zonitis , Stenoria) and the nominate subgenus Stenodera (Stenodera) were recovered as polyphyletic. In addition, biogeographic analyses revealed the origin of the subfamily in the Old World during the Eocene, and the associated diversification into the five tribes astride the Eocene and Oligocene between 46 and 30 Ma. Based on these results we propose the new tribe Zoltanzonitini, and the elevation of the subgenus Pronemognatha to genus level, new status. The present investigation deals with some aspects of the diversity of fire ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) in their native range. The Red Imported Fire Ant Solenopsis invicta is native to the tropical and subtropical inland territories of South America. In Brazil, it mainly occurs around the Pantanal region and across the Paraguay river, a region composed of grasslands which are seasonally flooded. Recent studies have evidenced this fire ant species is gradually spreading to other regions of Brazil. In the present investigation, we surveyed the molecular diversity of S. invicta populations across fragments of Atlantic Forest in São Paulo, Brazil, using mtDNA COI haplotypes. Fire ant nests were sampled along the highways lining the northern and southern slope sides of the mountain range Serra do Mar, SP, Brazil. Four haplotypes were identified (H1–H4), which were assessed for similarity to deposited records by other authors, revealing that the haplotypes H1 and H2 are likely of foreign origin through recent reintroduction via a marine port to the south of the Serra do Mar mountain range. On the other hand, the haplotypes H3 and H4, predominating among the inland samples from the northern side of the mountain range, were most similar to previous records from more central regions of Brazil. Haplotypes clustered into distinct supergroups, further pointing to the occurrence of two separate expansion waves of S. invicta in the region. Premise of research. Tilia L. is a Eurasian–eastern North American disjunct plant genus with great economic and ecological importance. However, a robust phylogeny has not been established with a comprehensive taxon sampling and a large amount of data. Methodology. We obtained DNA sequences of plastomes and multiple nuclear loci using the anchored hybrid enrichment technique and next-generation sequencing technology. Orthologous nuclear loci were inferred using tree-based methods. Phylogenetic analyses were performed using maximum parsimony, Bayesian, and coalescence-based species tree methods. Parentages of polyploids were inferred from the nuclear and plastid phylogenies. Pivotal results. Craigia yunnanensis W.W.Smith & W.E.Evans is sister to Tilia , within which T. endochrysea Hand.-Mazz., endemic to southern China, is the earliest-diverging lineage, followed by the European species T. platyphyllos Scop. The European T. cordata Mill. and eastern Asian T. amurensis Rupr. and T. kiusiana Makino & Shirasawa form a clade, while the North American T. americana L. is most closely related to the eastern and western Asian species complex including T. chingiana Hu & Cheng, T. mandshurica Maxim., T. oliveri Szyszyl., and western Asian T. tomentosa Moench. Significant incongruence exists between nuclear and plastid phylogenies. Conclusions. Our phylogenetic results suggest that there are six distinctive lineages or species complexes in the genus, (1) T. endochrysea ; (2) T. platyphyllos ; (3) T. kiusiana ; (4) T. cordata and T. amurensis ; (5) T. chingiana , T. miqueliana , and T. oliveri ; and (6) T. tomentosa and T. americana. They may be divided into two sections (Trichophilyra and Tilia) and three subsections (Tilia , Lindnera , and Trabeculares). The prevalent incongruence between nuclear and plastid phylogenies confirms the importance of ancient hybridization and introgression in the evolutionary history of the genus. SUMMARY: Prorocentrum comprises a unique group of dinophytes with several apomorphic traits, such as an apical insertion of flagella and the presence of two major, large thecal plates. Species delimitation is challenging, especially for morphologically very similar, small planktonic species. Contemporary analyses, including SEM studies and molecular phylogenetics of type material, are not available for many described species. Based on six strains isolated from Antarctic, subarctic and North Atlantic waters, Prorocentrum pervagatum sp. nov. is described. Prorocentrum pervagatum was small (12–16 μm long and deep), oval to round in outline, and moderately compressed. One small, pyrenoid‐like structure was faintly visible in some cells. Rod‐like, long trichocysts were present. Cells had one distinct apical spine (1.1–1.7 μm in length) visible in light microscopy. The plate surface appeared smooth in light microscopy with few pores located close to the plate margin visible in empty thecae. Electron microscopy revealed plates to be densely covered by small projections and two size classes of thecal pores. Cells had a row of mostly four large pores in apical‐ventral position on the right thecal plate. The periflagellar area consisted of eight small platelets. The apical spine was formed by platelet six. In molecular phylogenetics, P. pervagatum was part of a species group generally exhibiting small size and spiny thecal ornamentation, together with Prorocentrum cordatum and Prorocentrum obtusidens. The new species is distinct in DNA trees and differs from the protologues of other small species of Prorocentrum by the unique combination of size, shape (i.e. only moderately compressed or round), presence of a distinct apical spine, and position of thecal pores (i.e. located at the plate margins only). Its clear description and illustration may stimulate similar work of other small species of Prorocentrum, particularly including the re‐investigation of taxa with historical names collected at the corresponding type localities. The genus Girardia (Platyhelminthes: Tricladida) comprises several species of which some have spread from their original areas of distribution in the Americas to other parts of the globe. Due to great anatomical similarity between species, morphology-based phylogenetic analyses have struggled to resolve the affinities between species and species-groups. This problem is exacerbated by the fact that populations of Girardia may show only asexual reproduction by fissiparity and, thus, do not exhibit a copulatory apparatus, which hampers taxonomic identification of phylogenetic characters. In the present work, this problem has been resolved by constructing a molecular phylogeny of the genus. Although our samples do not include representatives of all known species, they cover a large part of the original distributional range of the genus Girardia. Our phylogenetic results suggest the presence of two main clades, which are genetically and karyologically highly differentiated. North and South American populations of G. tigrina actually constitute two sibling species that are not even closely related. The South American form is here described as a new species. The phylogenetic tree brings to light that Girardia arose on the South American portion of Gondwanaland, from which it, subsequently, dispersed to the Nearctic Region, probably more than once. In this study we present evidence of an ongoing speciation event in the Japanese Archipelago. The Kisaura nozakii species complex (Philopotamidae) is a group of a small trichopteran insects, and it has been reported that this species has large differences between populations in the copulatory organs (genitalia) of males. Therefore, we conducted molecular phylogenetic analyses based on the mtDNA COI region (658 bp) and genome-wide nDNA single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) (16 254 loci) using the K. nozakii species complex and a sister-species, K. borealis. We also conducted principal component analyses (PCA) based on the forewing length and seven morphological characteristics of the male genitalia. It was revealed that the K. nozakii species complex is composed of multiple allopatrically differentiated genetic lineages. However, two genetic lineages were distributed sympatrically/parapatrically in the western area of the Japanese Archipelago, and the occurrence of 'character displacement' in the male genitalia was detected in this area. We consider that the evolutionary event in this species complex has high potential to become a model case for elucidating the processes of speciation and species diversification. Minute moss beetles (Hydraenidae) are one of the most speciose and widespread families of aquatic Coleoptera, with an estimated 4000 extant species, found in the majority of aquatic habitats from coastal rock pools to mountain streams and from the Arctic Circle to the Antarctic islands. Molecular phylogenetic works have improved our understanding of the evolutionary history of the megadiverse Hydraena, Limnebius and Ochthebius in recent years, but most genera in the family have not yet been included in any phylogenetic analyses, particularly most of those which are restricted to the Southern Hemisphere. Using a multimarker molecular matrix, sampling over 40% of described species richness and 75% of currently recognized genera, we infer a comprehensive molecular phylogeny of these predominantly Gondwanan Hydraenidae. Whilst the genera we focus on are morphologically diverse, and currently classified across all four hydraenid subfamilies, our phylogenetic analyses suggest that these Gondwanan genera may instead constitute a single clade. As a result of our findings, the African genus Oomtelecopon Perkins syn.n. is shown to nest within Coelometopon Janssens, the New Zealand Homalaena Ordish syn.n. and Podaena Ordish syn.n. are synonymised with Orchymontia Broun, and the South African Pterosthetops Perkins syn.n. is synonymised with Prosthetops Waterhouse, resulting in Pterosthetopini Perkins syn.n. being synonymised with Prosthetopini Perkins. Mesoceratops Bilton & Jäch gen.n. is erected to accommodate six former members of Mesoceration Janssens, which is shown to be polyphyletic. We propose the replacement name Orchymontia ordishi Jäch & Bilton nom. n. for Homalaena dilatata Ordish, 1984 (now a junior homonym); altogether 39 new combinations are proposed. Our Bayesian divergence times infer an origin for this ‘Gondwana group’ of genera in Africa plus Madagascar in the mid-Cretaceous and suggest that both vicariant and dispersal processes, together with extinctions, have shaped the biogeographic history of these beetles in the Southern Hemisphere during the Cretaceous, resulting in geographically conserved extant lineages. Finally, we reconstruct ancestral habitat shifts across our phylogeny, revealing numerous changes in habitat occupancy in these genera, including multiple origins of fully terrestrial, humicolous taxa in different regions. The tribe Acanthoplectrini (Myrmeleontidae: Dendroleontinae) includes a group of antlion genera widely distributed across the Australasian and Oriental regions. The intergeneric and interspecific relationships between or within the Australian and Oriental lineages of this tribe as well as their historical biogeography remain largely unexplored. Here, we present a molecular phylogenetic and biogeographic analyses of Acanthoplectrini to infer the diversification history of this tribe, with emphasis on the Oriental lineage. Both the Oriental and Australian lineages are monophyletic and recovered as sister groups. Ancestral area reconstruction suggests that the ancestor of Acanthoplectrini might have been once widely distributed from Indochina to Australia and then split into the Oriental and Australian lineages during the early-Miocene. Our analyses recovered northeastern Indochina and south China as the ancestral range of the Oriental Acanthoplectrini. During the mid-Miocene to the mid-Pliocene, orographic events such as the rising of mountain ranges (including the Himalayas) and the formation of major islands in southeastern Asia triggered several dispersal and vicariance events in the Oriental Acanthoplectrini, driving their speciation. We revise the classification of the Oriental Acanthoplectrini, establishing the new genus Paralayahima gen. n., which is recovered sister to Layahima Navás. Moreover, we describe four new species of Layahima, Layahima aspoeckorum sp. n., Layahima monba sp. n., Layahima lhoba sp. n. and Layahima xinliae sp. n., and we reinstate two previously synonymized species, Layahima melanocoris (Yang) stat. rev. and comb. n. and Layahima nebulosa Navás stat. rev. The role of geomorphological features as drivers for benthic deep-sea biodiversity remains poorly understood. By disentangling the putative Haploniscus belyaevi Birstein, 1963a species complex from the abysso-hadal Kuril-Kamchatka Trench (KKT) region in the North-west Pacific Ocean, we aim to shed light on deep-sea differentiation and how it is related to potential bathymetric barriers such as the KKT and the Kuril-Island Ridge (KIR). Our integrative taxonomic approach featured morphological and molecular delimitation methods, also considering the post-marsupial development due to pronounced sexual dimorphism. Mitochondrial 16S and COI markers were sequenced and several molecular species delimitation methods were applied. By combining the different results we were able to delineate six distinct species within the belyaevi complex, including several morphologically cryptic species, and found hints of three additional species groups in the complex. Even though several of these species were distributed across the KKT and/or KIR, limited gene flow and depth-differentiation were indicated supporting previous notions that these geomorphological features play a role in deep-sea benthos speciation. The genus Cyrtodactylus has recently been classified phylogenetically into several clades, subclades, groups, and some into Sri Lankan Cyrtodactylus. Certain complexes from the Indian subcontinent have been assigned to the "C. triedrus group". This group is comprised of medium-sized species (SVL 50.6–105.7 mm) and are composed of five major species complexes: fraenatus, triedrus, deccanensis, jeyporensis, and collegalensis. Among these complexes, the latter four are composed of ground and litter dwelling species, which were previously assigned to the genus Geckoella; and is currently being treated as a subgenus. Cyrtodactylus triedrus, an endemic species of Sri Lanka, has long been considered a widely distributed single species in this part of the world. Based on morphological and phylogenetic evidences, we demonstrate that C. (G.) triedrus is not a single species, but a species complex. We also describe a new species that is restricted to intermediate savanna-mixed dry lowland forested habitats. Furthermore, we resurrect Geckoella punctata, assign it to the genus Cyrtodactylus and designate a lectotype that we redescribe. The genetic divergence across species of the C. triedrus clade varies between 11–26% in the studied fragment of the mitochondrial NADH dehydrogenase subunit 2 gene. The molecular phylogeny of the ground dwelling radiation of the subgenus Geckoella indicates deep splits between the Indian species and Sri Lankan endemic C. (G.) triedrus sensu stricto, and between Indian dry and wet zone clades. During extensive surveys of global Phytophthora diversity 14 new species detected in natural ecosystems in Chile, Indonesia, USA (Louisiana), Sweden, Ukraine and Vietnam were assigned to Phytophthora major Clade 10 based on a multigene phylogeny of nine nuclear and three mitochondrial gene regions. Clade 10 now comprises three subclades. Subclades 10a and 10b contain species with nonpapillate sporangia, a range of breeding systems and a mainly soil- and waterborne lifestyle. These include the previously described P. afrocarpa, P. gallica and P. intercalaris and eight of the new species: P. ludoviciana, P. procera, P. pseudogallica, P. scandinavica, P. subarctica, P. tenuimura, P. tonkinensis and P. ukrainensis. In contrast, all species in Subclade 10c have papillate sporangia and are self-fertile (or homothallic) with an aerial lifestyle including the known P. boehmeriae, P. gondwanensis, P. kernoviae and P. morindae and the new species P. celebensis, P. chilensis, P. javanensis, P. multiglobulosa, P. pseudochilensis and P. pseudokernoviae. All new Phytophthora species differed from each other and from related species by their unique combinations of morphological characters, breeding systems, cardinal temperatures and growth rates. The biogeography and evolutionary history of Clade 10 are discussed. We propose that the three subclades originated via the early divergence of pre-Gondwanan ancestors > 175 Mya into water- and soilborne and aerially dispersed lineages and subsequently underwent multiple allopatric and sympatric radiations during their global spread. Skinks (Family Scincidae) are the most diverse family of lizards (~1745 described species worldwide), and the Australasian region (Australia, New Caledonia, New Zealand) is a recognised global hotspot (>600 species) for skinks. Here we focus on determining the phylogenetic relationships and biogeography within the tribe Eugongylini, one of three lineages in the region. We used mtDNA (ND2) and nuclear (RAG-1 , c-mos) DNA sequences and phylogenetic analyses to reveal the presence of three well-supported lineages of Australian Eugongylini. We found a sister relationship between the monotypic genera Eroticoscincus and Harrisoniascincus , and that the monotypic Anepischetosia has close affinities with Carinascincus coventryi and Pseudemoia. C. coventryi represents a separate lineage from the main Carinascincus radiation. Emoia was not found to be monophyletic, with Emoia s.s. part of an Australian lineage, and the remainder of the genus representing an older divergence within the tribe. The widespread and speciose Cryptoblepharus represented a well-supported lineage within an Australian lineage. Our analyses confirm previous suggestions that four Sphenomorphus species (louisiadensis , minutus , bignelli , and aignanus) are misplaced, and are part of the Eugongylini. Our phylogenetic analyses support the hypothesis that the origin of the tribe lies in Asia, with dispersal events to Africa, Australasia, and Oceania. We produced a molecular phylogeny for the skink Tribe Eugongylini, with our analyses revealing three well-supported lineages of Australian Eugongylini, and resolving the phylogenetic relationships among several problematic Australian genera. Chilodendron Schedl, 1953 is resurrected as a valid genus based on Chilodendron planicolle Schedl, 1953. This is the only representative of the tribe Hylesinini Erichson, 1836 found on Madagascar and a molecular phylogenetic analysis of several genes supports a position separate from Hylesinopsis Eggers, 1920 and other putatively close relatives. It is likely that Chilodendron is the oldest living lineage of bark beetles on Madagascar and possibly originated in the late Cretaceous not long after the separation of Madagascar from the Indian subcontinent. Background and Aims Cycads are regarded as an ancient lineage of living seed plants, and hold important clues to understand the early evolutionary trends of seed plants. The molecular phylogeny and spatio-temporal diversification of one of the species-rich genera of cycads, Macrozamia , have not been well reconstructed. Methods We analysed a transcriptome dataset of 4740 single-copy nuclear genes (SCGs) of 39 Macrozamia species and two outgroup taxa. Based on concatenated (maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood) and multispecies coalescent analyses, we first establish a well-resolved phylogenetic tree of Macrozamia. To identify cyto-nuclear incongruence, the plastid protein coding genes (PCGs) from transcriptome data are extracted using the software HybPiper. Furthermore, we explore the biogeographical history of the genus and shed light on the pattern of floristic exchange between three distinct areas of Australia. Six key diagnostic characters are traced on the phylogenetic framework using two comparative methods, and infra-generic classification is investigated. Key Results The tree topologies of concatenated and multi-species coalescent analyses of SCGs are mostly congruent with a few conflicting nodes, while those from plastid PCGs show poorly supported relationships. The genus contains three major clades that correspond to their distinct distributional areas in Australia. The crown group of Macrozamia is estimated to around 11.80 Ma, with a major expansion in the last 5–6 Myr. Six morphological characters show homoplasy, and the traditional phenetic sectional division of the genus is inconsistent with this current phylogeny. Conclusions This first detailed phylogenetic investigation of Macrozamia demonstrates promising prospects of SCGs in resolving phylogenetic relationships within cycads. Our study suggests that Macrozamia , once widely distributed in Australia, underwent major extinctions because of fluctuating climatic conditions such as cooling and mesic biome disappearance in the past. Donacidae is a commercially important family of heterodont bivalves and one of the few bivalve lineages that has successfully colonised brackish and fresh waters. However, to date, no phylogenetic hypothesis exists for this widely distributed group. Here we turn to molecular data from the nuclear and mitochondrial genomes and combine these with the extensive fossil record of donacids to propose an evolutionary hypothesis for the family. Our analyses strongly support the monophyly of Donacidae, including Galatea , Iphigenia and ' Plebidonax ' deltoides , but render Donax paraphyletic. The subgenus Latona is therefore elevated to genus to accommodate a clade of Indo-Pacific species, while retaining Donax for a clade of mostly Atlantic and American Pacific species, and a few Indo-Pacific species. This latter clade is sister group to Galatea + Iphigenia. The diversification of Donacidae seems to be tightly connected to the opening of the North and South Atlantic Oceans in the Cretaceous, and to the closing of the Tethys Ocean during the Oligocene.
