This paper reports on the findings of research aimed at examining the life stories of teachers who have experienced migration moves between Mexico and the U.S. and are currently engaged in English Language Teaching in Mexico. Drawing from a larger research project into the transnationals' learning trajectories in two Mexican states, the study presents three life stories to illuminate three broad transnationalism patterns leading to the achievement of different levels of investment in social, educational and professional practices. The paper uses a theoretical framework based on the interrelationship between transitions, identity, and agency to analyse how participants' interpretations of transnational experiences facilitate or hinder their engagement in social, educational and professional activities. Main findings support Casinader's (2017) perspective of transnationalism as a 'dynamic instability' showing that transnationalism is achieved differently by each of the participants. Participants' stories revealed that this has profound implications for their levels of investment since their subjective interpretations of life experiences played an important role in their levels of social, cultural and professional involvement.

Ole Ivar Lovaas (1927-2010) is known worldwide for his research within the field of Applied Behavior Analysis, and is probably the most influential researcher within the field of treatment of children with autism. In the first part of this biographically oriented paper, we inform the readers about his family background, childhood, elementary and secondary school years, and his adolescent years during World War II in his first homeland, Norway, based on archival research and interviews. In the second part, we describe his life, academic studies, research and successes in his second home country, the United States. Finally, we briefly recount the impact Lovaas has had on the field of Applied Behavior Analysis and the treatment of and services for children with autism spectrum disorders in Norway and in the North America.

In this paper I examine how and to what extent various elements of my biography--race, ethnicity, gender, age, social class background, and prior personal and professional experiences--influenced my relationships with students in a graduate course examining the impact of race, gender, and social class on education. My lived experiences as an immigrant woman of color in United States society and my prior professional experiences as an urban teacher are shown to have strengthened my expertise and confidence in teaching this course. Nevertheless, experience confirmed my initial concerns that my race, gender, and social class background negatively influenced some students' perceptions of my teaching competence and position of authority in the classroom. The paper concludes with recommendations for teacher education, including encouraging teachers to continuously engage the question of how their biographies shape their pedagogies and relationships with students, an important undertaking as our schooling populations become more racially, ethnically, and linguistically diverse. I also recommend that universities continue to recruit faculty who are not only from racial minority backgrounds but also from varied ethnic and social class backgrounds.

The paper investigates internationality as an academic virtue that is highly relevant for research biographies. The discursive trajectory of this virtue is assessed by comparing ascriptions of internationality in 216 academic obituaries from the US, UK and Germany, from physics, sociology and history, and from the 1960s, 1980s and 2000s. Our analysis reveals that internationality as a virtue is more prevalent in German than in US obituaries, that it plays a greater role in physics than in history obituaries, and that, independent from national and disciplinary contexts, the ascription of internationality increases over time. The results are relevant for research on academic values and on the internationalization of academia. By drawing on obituaries, the analysis conveys how "internationality" developed as a discursive construct, and how it turned into an imperative that academics increasingly have to comply with in order to be deemed honorable.

Assistive technologies (AT) perform an important social role, interacting with cultural systems to produce or hinder accessibility to biosocial environments. This interaction profoundly shapes not only how an individual body can be experienced by users but also produce and hinder accessibility to biosocial environments. AT users have historically been viewed through a medical model, which deems them disabled by their impairments and by dominant ableist narratives. Therefore, this paper serves to provide an insight into the importance of ageing with and into AT. This paper aims to investigate polio survivors' and diabetic amputees' experiences of assistive technologies in order to better understand impacts upon narrative and identity. By applying an anthropological and sociological lens, a holistic view of the experiences of polio survivor and amputee AT users is developed. This paper draws on 16 in-depth interviews with polio survivors and diabetic amputees in the United States (US) and Australia, which were analysed using an experience-centered narrative approach. Both projects were approved by ethics boards. All participants provided written consent. Five themes were identified: a) disruption to biographies, which reflected AT impact on how narratives become altered; b) impacts to autonomy, which reflected the importance of regaining previous daily activities; c) re-engaging with community life, which highlighted how AT supported participation in valued activities; d) self-perceptions of assistive technologies, which act in opposition to external perspectives and challenge ableist narratives; and e) an intergenerational comparison of new and older AT users highlights the importance of temporalities. This paper offers new perspectives on ageing with assistive technologies, with a focus on identity and narrative. The importance of this paper is to contribute to the existing literature that demonstrates the cultural implications that arise through embodiment and assistive technologies. This interview provides glimpses of Joseph J. Lagowski and his life from the time he played with a Gilbert chemistry set, to his tenure at The University of Texas at Austin. His initial interest in chemistry was further nurtured and developed thanks to an excellent high school teacher. In the interview, Lagowski discusses his research in nonaqueous solvents and his contribution to chemical education. He shares his views about active learning methods, the use of technology in education, problem solving, and the use of a systemic approach in teaching and learning chemistry. Using the cognitive apprenticeship theory, he discusses the role of the laboratory for improving interest in chemistry. A discussion on graduate programs in chemistry is also included. This paper is an exploratory study of the childhood academic language environments (CALEs) of bilingual Japanese expatriate students. Student (n=28) and parent (n=67) surveys were adapted from the Life History Calendar (Caspi et al. 1996) to gather retrospective CALE data at a Japanese-English bilingual high school. Principal Components Analysis was conducted to derive three underlying CALE components, each representing educational intervention strategies. These three components were comprised of primary loadings that depict the respective aspects of the Japanese transnational experience with their children's supplementary education during their overseas sojourns and reveal families' needs for: L1 maintenance communities, L2 acquisition support, and a means to convert their children's bilingual skills into academic credentials that are adequate for both L1 and L2 contexts. Principal components were thus interpreted as sojourning families' three approaches to environmental structuring: a Japanese Cultural Community Approach, a Quasi-Bilingual Approach, and a Japanese Test-oriented Approach. The article focuses on the book "The Public Papers and Addresses of Franklin D. Roosevelt, 1937-1940," compiled and collated Samuel I. Rosenman. Four volumes covering the second administration, i.e. 1937-1940, have just been published to supplement volumes of the first four years. They should be read because they refresh the memory with surprising effect, they show U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt in new moments when many of his off-the-record press conference comments are now released, and above all because they give a complete view of the President as he wants to be known instead of the spasmodic glimpses afforded by the isolated daily event. They give immediate insight to works of a President who can already be counted among the outstanding men of that office. The press conference excerpts are the most interesting items in these volumes. The informal give and take between the President and correspondents throughout these four volumes, sometimes in bad feeling and sometimes in great good feeling, is probably as revealing about American national being as anything that can ever be said by any President.

The article discusses the creation of an intellectual biography of the U.S. sociologist Talcott Parsons. An important service that police psychology can offer law enforcement administrators is assistance in the selection of future officers. Police psychologists have traditionally focused on the identification of psychopathology and exclusion of applicants who were found to be mentally ill. The introduction of the Americans with Disabilities Act (1990) has changed what had been considered appropriate exclusion criteria because of the introduction of increased civil rights protections for persons with disabilities. At the same time, increasing civil liability for law enforcement departments in regard to officer misconduct has compelled police psychologist to evaluate potential for future misconduct by non-clinical means. The scientific examination of biographical data may be one method of establishing the relationship between officer candidate variables and future misconduct. This paper examined the predictive validity of biographical information for a sample of 2965 police officer candidates. Results indicated that several biographical variables were significantly correlated with later termination. However, results of regression analyses indicated that biographical variables alone accounted for limited variance in the prediction of police officer termination. The use of biographical information as a sole determinant of police candidate suitability was not supported and the use of additional sources of data would be required for effectual forecasting purposes. Men who shaped the Civil Engineering profession in the 19th century, especially the bridge builders, are virtually unknown to engineers of the 21st century. This paper is about a man who was one of the most prolific bridge builders of the period from 1860 to 1880 when railroads began to cross major rivers of the country. He built several long span bridges over the Schuylkill, Ohio, Mississippi, and Missouri rivers. He set the record for railroad truss bridge span on three occasions starting at 320 ft going to 420 ft and in 1877 building a span of 520 ft. He developed the pin connected Whipple double intersection truss by placing wrought iron links in the lower chord, built up riveted plate wrought iron upper chords and posts built of two or more wrought iron shapes riveted together. This paper looks at Carl Sauer's undergraduate and pre-Berkeley experiences in relation to his more mature views of geography. A biographical approach is used to illustrate the link between milieu and intellectual development. It is argued that Sauer's undergraduate days in Warrenton. Missouri were decidedly significant in shaping his worldview and that his later writings are better understood in light of his childhood and adolescent experiences. The article presents information American philanthropists. This paper records the conclusions drawn from a study of the social pattern to which the adjective, philanthropic, is attached in the Dictionary of American Biography. The dictionary so classifies 175 names. Though there is no clearcut definition of the characteristics of a philanthropist and some inconsistency in applying or withholding the title on the basis of behavior which was essentially the same, it seemed possible to regard the list as a sample and to study it for whatever results it might yield. Certain questions in regard to bias might be raised, but they cannot be answered until people's knowledge of the history of American philanthropy is more nearly complete. Two recent studies, one along similar lines of the biographies of American inventors and the other of philanthropic gifts and givers, furnished interesting comparisons and contrasts.
