Research has been conducted on the alpha-D-Galp-(1(approaches)3)-D-Man. The synthesis of this compound which is present in type-2 glycoinositolphospholipids and in the lipophosphoglycan core of Leishmania has been carried out and is described.

A convenient method for the synthesis of 1,3-polyols involves the formation of furanone from D-glycero-D-gulo-heptono-1,4-lactone. Specifically, furanone 4, which is a combination of E and Z diastereoisomers, is produced. Furanones 4-E,Z then undergo pd/charcoal-catalyzed hydrogenation to yield 4,5-dihydro-3(H)-furan-ones of 3R,5S,2'S (D-xylo) and 3S,5R,2'S (D-arabino) stereochemistry. 3,5-Dideoxy-meso-xylo-heptitol is also easily achieved from furanones 4-E/Z after several steps which include hydrogenation, recrystallization, O-debenzoylation and reduction.

A novel method of synthesizing alpha-D-Galf1-phosphate takes into account the extreme lability of furanose-1-phosphate. The new sugar phosphate is essential for the study of galactofuranosyl unit synthesis in parasite glycoconjugates. The product resembles arabinofuranosyl phosphate in chromatic mobility and produces arabinose upon subjection to mild acid hydrolysis.

Research has been conducted on Mycobacterium tuberculosis galactan. The authors describe the synthesis of galactan's trisaccharide units carried out via the use of substituted D-galactono-1,4-lactones.
