Abstract

Results reveal that during spore coat assembly in Bacillus subtilis, morphogenetic proteins SpoVID and SafA interact and SafA interacts with itself. Immunofluorescence analysis indicate that SafA is targeted to the forespore but its localization to the forespore requires SpoIVD.

Abstract

Research reveals a translation mechanism for the production of structural components of the endospore coat of Bacillus subtilis. Data indicate that expression of the shorter form 30-kilodalton SafA protein arises from translation initiation at codon 164 and overproduction of this protein compromises sporulation.

Abstract

The coat assembly of bacterial endospores is made possible through the expression of the tasA gene, a protein by-product of gerE mutant strains. This protein, which may be synthesized through NaOH treatment, enables the predivisional cell of the bacteria to create a highly complex coat that acts as shield against noxious chemicals. TasA has also been found to induce protein secretion during coat assembly, thereby influencing the bacteria's germination response.
