Information on species’ geographic distribution is essential in setting up key areas of conservation priorities and management policies. To date, there is a paucity of information on the primate species that inhabit some forest areas, including the forests along the Yewa River Basin located at the Nigeria-Benin Republic transboundary. To address this, we conducted a field survey across four relatively unexplored fragmented forest areas (Eggua, Igbo-Iju, Ibese and Ebute) within the Yewa River Basin. We recorded 441 individuals belonging to four species -Cercopithecus erythrogaster erythrogaster, Cercopithecus mona, Chlorocebus aethiops and Erythrocebus patas. Our observation record shows that C. mona has the highest encounter rate, while E. patas has the lowest. Our result reveals a seasonal displacement of individuals with the high number of individuals encountered during the rainy season. Most of the primate species (C. e. erythrogaster, C. mona, and E. patas) are of high conservation concern and are categorized as threatened species according to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. Our study improves knowledge of the primate species within some forests of the Yewa River Basin. We also recommend continuous survey and monitoring of primate species in this area and encourage community-based conservation policies to protect the primates and habitat.

The buffer zones of Nigerian protected areas are poorly managed. Patas monkey (Erythrocebus patas) was studied in fact owing to its dearth of information on its ecology and existence in South-West Nigeria National Park. Therefore, it was necessary to examine E. patas spatial distribution and population structure in the Old Oyo National Park buffer zone ranges, situated in South-West Nigeria and as well know its dietary uptake alongside delineating its various activities. Observations were positioned on direct census methods. A total of 60 individuals of E. patas (23 female, 21 male, and 16 young individuals) were sighted within the study period (March to July). The results showed that the highest number of sighted E. patas (18 individuals) was recorded in the month of March while the Marguba range had the highest percentage of sighted E. patas (31.7%). Thirteen plant species were identified as food matters of E. patas while the major activity observed by the majority of E. patas was found feeding on the identified food matters. The food matters consumed were plant parts which included the leaves, flowers, gum, enflamed spikes, and fruits. Actions to uphold and guard the remaining populace of E. patas in the Park and buffer zones should be adequately fortified.

Simian varicella virus (SVV) was first isolated in 1966 from African green monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops) imported from Nairobi, Kenya, to the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine in the United Kingdom (UK) (Clarkson et al., Arch Gesamte Virusforsch 22:219–234, 1967). SVV infection caused severe disease that resulted in a 56% case fatality rate (CFR) in the imported animals within 48 h of the appearance of a varicella-like rash (Clarkson et al., Arch Gesamte Virusforsch 22:219–234, 1967; Hemme et al., Am J Trop Med Hyg 94:1095–1099, 2016). The deceased animals presented with fever, widespread vesicular rash, and multiple hemorrhagic foci throughout the lungs, liver, and spleen (Clarkson et al., Arch Gesamte Virusforsch 22:219–234, 1967). This outbreak was quickly followed by a second outbreak in 47 patas monkeys (Erythrocebus patas) imported from Chad and Nigeria by Glaxo Laboratories (London, England, UK), which quickly spread within the facility (McCarthy et al., Lancet 2:856–857, 1968).

Primates being reservoirs of parasites that cause major problems to humans, livestock and under stressful conditions to themselves is a major concern to wildlife conservation, our study compared the gastrointestinal parasites of some Non-human Primates at University of Ilorin Zoological Garden (Unilorin Zoo) and Kainji Lake National Park (KLNP), Nigeria in order to determine the level of their prevalence and possibility of infection on tourists visiting the sites. Species sampled were restricted to those common to both sites; Papio anubis, Erythrocebus patas and Chlorocebus aethiops tantalus. A total of 128 faecal samples were screened from apparent healthy individuals. Samples were processed using sedimentation, sugar floatation technique, Stoll's dilution technique, cultured and infective larvae were recovered using Baermann technique.110 (85.7%) samples were positive for infestation of at least one eggs. Among the positive samples were three species of nematodes; Strongyloides spp., Ascaris spp., Ancyclostoma spp. Primates on free-range had higher prevalence of infection. However, under both conditions, there is no significant difference in the prevalence and intensity of parasites harboured over seasonst (4) = 1.968, p =0.120).

Human activities have led to the overlapping of resource requirements among themselves and animal species and this often results in conflict. This research was conducted to determine the type of animal species involved in crop raiding, crops raided, the reasons for crop raiding events with its associated effects on the livelihoods of surrounding communities and the mitigation measures against it. 10 victims from eight communities were interviewed through a semi-structured guide. Though many animals were involved, the most troublesome and destructive were the following monkey species: Olive baboons (Papio anubis); Patas monkeys (Erythrocebus patas); and Green monkeys (Cercocerbus sabaeus). These monkeys raiding events were found to be based on the palatability of crops and the most adopted methods used in deterring them were shouting and trapping. Monkeys were found to raid crops at the various farms in the communities for diverse reasons and recommendations for peaceful coexistence of humans have been made.

The "Critically Endangered" southern patas monkey Erythrocebus baumstarki, thought to be endemic to Tanzania, has been resurrected to species level based on its geographic isolation, and on the coloration and pattern of its pelage. This study presents the first evidence for E. baumstarki in Kenya and reviews its historic and current geographic distributions based on the literature, museum specimens, online platforms, responses to requests for site records, and our own fieldwork. The distribution of E. baumstarki in the early 20th century was roughly 66,000 km2 . This has declined about 85% to around 9700 km2 at present (post-2009). The current "Extent of Occurrence" is only about 2150 km2 . This species was extirpated from Kenya in about 2015 and from the Kilimanjaro Region in Tanzania in about 2011. At present, E. baumstarki appears to be restricted to the protected areas of the western Serengeti, with the western Serengeti National Park being the stronghold. The number of individuals remaining is probably between 100 and 200, including between 50 and 100 mature individuals. The ultimate threat to E. baumstarki is the very rapidly increasing human population, while the main proximate threats are the degradation, loss, and fragmentation of natural habitats, and the related competition with people and livestock for habitat and water, particularly during droughts. Other problems are hunting by poachers and domestic dogs, and probably loss of genetic variation and climate change. This article provides recommendations for reducing the threats and promoting the recovery of E. baumstarki. We hope this article heightens awareness of the dire conservation status of E. baumstarki and encourages an increase in research and conservation action for this monkey.

Guinea-Bissau (GB) is a regional stronghold for primate conservation. Ten primates occur in the country, including the Western chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes verus) and two colobus monkeys (Colobus polykomos and Piliocolobus badius temminckii). Primate meat is consumed at households and bushmeat-dedicated establishments, locally named "Abafatório". Such establishments are mentioned to be common in urban areas since the 1980s and to be specialized in serving primate meat while drinking alcoholic beverages. The meat is typically cooked in a stew and eaten with bread. However, as the trade and consumption of primate meat are illegal activities, the location of Abafatório establishments and details of the trade, namely species being consumed, are usually hidden from outsiders. Here, we characterize illicit bushmeat commerce and consumption at six Abafatórios of a small town. Our team visited the establishments every week for 15 months (2015-2017) and collected data on the type and prices of meals and gathered tissue samples taken from carcasses by establishment owners. A meta-barcoding approach (cytb and 12S mitochondrial DNA regions and Illumina MiSeq next-generation sequencing technology) was used to identify tissue samples to the species level. Two types of establishments can be distinguished – “restaurants” and “snack-bars”. Restaurants are similar to the ones found by previous works in the capital city where primate meat is sold as a dish containing few pieces of stewed meat. Snack-bars are smaller and the meat is sold inexpensively and by the piece. In the present study, 249 tissue samples were identified to be from four primates (Cercopithecus campbelli, Chlorocebus sabaeus, Papio papio, and Erythrocebus patas) and four Artiodactyla (Philantomba maxwellii, Tragelaphus scriptus, Potamochoerus porcus and Phacochoerus africanus). Primates represented approximately 92% of all species consumed across establishments, and C. campbelli was the most traded species. Our work suggests that primate meat is monetarily accessible for locals in rural areas and that the trade at Abafatórios may have extensive negative consequences to primate conservation, in particular, the reduction of primates' populations in the southern part of GB. Our work quantifies and identifies the species consumed in Abafatório establishments for the first time and highlights the need to improve regulation and law enforcement in Guinea-Bissau.

Increasing contact between humans and non-human primates provides an opportunity for the transfer of potential pathogens or antimicrobial resistance between host species. We have investigated genomic diversity, and antimicrobial resistance in Escherichia coli isolates from four species of non-human primate in the Gambia: Papio papio (n=22), Chlorocebus sabaeus (n=14), Piliocolobus badius (n=6) and Erythrocebus patas (n=1). We performed Illumina whole-genome sequencing on 101 isolates from 43 stools, followed by nanopore long-read sequencing on eleven isolates. We identified 43 sequence types (STs) by the Achtman scheme (ten of which are novel), spanning five of the eight known phylogroups of E. coli. The majority of simian isolates belong to phylogroup B2—characterised by strains that cause human extraintestinal infections—and encode factors associated with extraintestinal disease. A subset of the B2 strains (ST73, ST681 and ST127) carry the pks genomic island, which encodes colibactin, a genotoxin associated with colorectal cancer. We found little antimicrobial resistance and only one example of multi-drug resistance among the simian isolates. Hierarchical clustering showed that simian isolates from ST442 and ST349 are closely related to isolates recovered from human clinical cases (differences in 50 and seven alleles respectively), suggesting recent exchange between the two host species. Conversely, simian isolates from ST73, ST681 and ST127 were distinct from human isolates, while five simian isolates belong to unique core-genome ST complexes—indicating novel diversity specific to the primate niche. Our results are of public health importance, considering the increasing contact between humans and wild non-human primates.Impact statementLittle is known about the population structure, virulence potential and the burden of antimicrobial resistance among Escherichia coli from wild non-human primates, despite increased exposure to humans through the fragmentation of natural habitats. Previous studies, primarily involving captive animals, have highlighted the potential for bacterial exchange between non-human primates and humans living nearby, including strains associated with intestinal pathology. Using multiple-colony sampling and whole-genome sequencing, we investigated the strain distribution and population structure of E. coli from wild non-human primates from the Gambia. Our results indicate that these monkeys harbour strains that can cause extraintestinal infections in humans. We document the transmission of virulent E. coli strains between monkeys of the same species sharing a common habitat and evidence of recent interaction between strains from humans and wild non-human primates. Anti-Trypanosoma brucei brucei and anti-Trypanosoma congolense activities of sera from two species of uninfected zoo-primates, Erythrocebus patas (red patas monkey) and Chlorocebus tantalus (tantalus monkey) were investigated. The sera were screened using thick films and haematocrit centrifugation technique (HCT), to ensure that the donor primates were not infected with trypanosomes. Trypanosoma brucei brucei (Federe strain) and Trypanosoma congolense were suspended in supplemented RPMI (Rossvelt Park Memorial Institute) 1640 medium and the motility of the parasite was used as index of viability after the addition of each test serum. The selected primate sera exhibited some degree of anti-Trypanosoma brucei brucei activities in vitro. Red patas monkey serum had an inhibition index of 0.27, while that of Tantalus monkey was 0.34, against Trypanosoma brucei brucei, with mean survival times of 22.00±1.73 hours for red patas monkey serum and 19.67±0.58 hours for tantalus monkey serum, which are significantly lower (PTrypanosoma congolense. Sera from the two species of primate had very high anti-Trypanosoma congolense activity showing an inhibition index of 0.91 for Red patas monkey serum and 0.90 for Tantalus monkey serum, with marked and significant reduction (Pin vitro anti-trypanosomal activity of the serum samples was shown to be cidal in nature. The activity was not associated with xanthine oxidase. This study revealed that sera from red patas monkey and tantalus monkey had a moderate anti-Trypanosoma brucei brucei activity and a very high anti-Trypanosoma congolense activity in vitro suggesting the presence of some non-specific materials.Authors’ SummaryThe mechanisms that allow trypanosomiasis-resistant animals to control blood trypanosomes are being investigated, to identify non-specific factors that kill trypanosomes or limit their proliferation, contributing to host resistance. For instance, xanthine oxidase has been isolated and identified as the protein that kills trypanosomes in Cape buffalo. Humans and several other primates are also known to be resistant to infection by several animal-specific trypanosome species. In this study, sera from some zoo primates, red patas monkey and tantalus monkey, tested on Trypanosoma brucei brucei and Trypanosoma congolense in vitro, showed a slight anti-Trypanosoma brucei brucei activity and a very high anti-Trypanosoma congolense activity. These activities were shown to be cidal in nature and not associated with the protein xanthine oxidase. The authors suggest that non-specific factors other than the enzyme xanthine oxidase might have accounted for the sera anti-trypanosomal activities.

The distribution of West African primates is still poorly explored in Togo. Field data on distribution, abundance (kilometric index of abundance) and characteristics of primate habitat at six protected and unprotected areas of Togo are reported in this paper. Eight species and 831 primate individuals were visually recorded during field surveys. A few other species were suspected, but not recorded. Species directly observed in the field during our surveys were Cercopithecus erythrogaster erythrogaster, Cercopithecus petaurista petaurista, Cercopithecus mona, Chlorocebus tantalus, Colobus vellerosus, Erythrocebus patas, Papio anubis and Galago senegalensis. Our surveys did not provide any evidence of the persistence of the chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes verus) in the country. Peting is an age-old habit of keeping either domestic or wild animals as man’s companion. In Makurdi metropolis, residents also keep pets. This study was conducted with the objectives of assessing the Domestic and Wild Animal pets owned by residents of Makurdi Metropolis. Questionnaire was used and structured into 2 sections namely, socio- demographic characteristics of residents and ownership of domestic and wild animals pets. Simple and systematic random samplings were used to select sample locations in which a total of 250 questionnaires were administered; Descriptive statistics, Students t-test and chi-square analysis were used to analyzed data. Result showed that, out of the 250 respondents; 144 were male respondents while 106 were female respondents. Residents of Makurdi Metropolis owned both domestic and wild animal’s pets. The commonest domestic animal pet was the Dog. While the commonest wild animal pet was the Red Patas Monkey (Erythrocebus patas). It was therefore recommended that more Enlightenment campaigns on the danger of zoonotic diseases transmission associated with pets and their preventive measures should be given to residents of Makurdi metropolis to forestall future public health hazards.

A 9-year-old female captive patas monkey (Erythrocebus patas) presented with poor general condition, inability to stand, petechiae, anaemia, thrombocytopenia, and leukocytosis. Due to poor response to treatment, the animal was euthanized 16 days later. Postmortem examination revealed hemorrhages in several organs and bilateral cerebral infarctions. Histologically, prominent accumulations of large neoplastic lymphocytes in cerebral and meningeal blood vessels were demonstrated within the lesions and in other organs (e.g., bone marrow, ovary, intestine). Immunohistochemically, neoplastic cells expressed CD3 and Ki-67. PCR revealed a lymphocryptovirus (LCV) infection, while Epstein–Barr nuclear antigen 2 (EBNA2) could not be demonstrated within neoplastic cells by means of immunohistochemistry. Based on the pathological findings, an intravascular lymphoma (IVL) of T-cell origin was diagnosed. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first report on this rare entity in a nonhuman primate.

An important step to incriminate a mosquito as a vector of a disease pathogen is finding evidence of direct contact between the mosquito and humans. Typically, this is accomplished through landing/biting catches, or host blood meal analysis in engorged mosquitoes via immunologic assays. An alternate approach is to identify the presence of specific mosquito anti-saliva protein antibodies in the blood of exposed hosts. Following the discovery of dengue infected, free roaming non-human primates in Puerto Rico, we investigated which mosquito species had bitten these primates using a serologic assay. Serum samples from 20 patas monkeys (Erythrocebus patas) and two rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) were used to evaluate mosquito bite exposure to Aedes aegypti, Aedes mediovittatus, Aedes taeniorhynchus, and Culex quinquefasciatus mosquitoes. Of 22 non-human primates examined 20 (90%), 17 (77%), 13 (59%), and 7 (31%) were positive for exposure to Ae. mediovittatus, Cx. quinquefasciatus, Ae. taeniorhynchus, and Ae. aegypti, respectively. Our findings indicated that free-roaming primates in Puerto Rico were exposed to the bites of one proven dengue vector, Ae. aegypti and one potential dengue vector, Ae. mediovittatus.

Individual spatial positioning plays an important role in mediating the costs and benefits of group living, and thus shapes different aspects of animal social systems including group structure and cohesiveness. I aimed to quantify variation in individual spacing behavior and its correlates in a group of wild patas monkeys (Erythrocebus patas) living in north Cameroon. I collected data on inter-individual distances during group scans when following subject females. Individuals had longer inter-individual distances during the non-birth season than during the birth season. Dominance relationships had little effect on inter-individual distances between females during both the non-birth and birth seasons. The results suggest that group cohesion was higher during the birth season than the non-birth season. Thus I conclude that higher group cohesion during the birth season may reduce the predation risk of infants.

Antiretroviral (ARV) drug therapy, given during pregnancy for prevention of mother-to-child transmission of human immunodeficiency virus 1 (HIV-1), induces fetal mitochondrial dysfunction in some children. However, the persistence/reversibility of that dysfunction is unclear. Here we have followed Erythrocebus patas (patas) monkey offspring for up to 3 years of age (similar in development to a 15-year old human) after exposure of the dams to human-equivalent in utero ARV exposure protocols. Pregnant patas dams (3-5/exposure group) were given ARV drug combinations that included zidovudine (AZT)/lamivudine (3TC)/abacavir (ABC), or AZT/3TC/nevirapine (NVP), for the last 10 weeks (50%) of gestation. Infants kept for 1 and 3 years also received drug for the first 6 weeks of life. Serum specimens from free-ranging but nonnative patas monkeys (Erythrocebus patas) and rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) in southwestern Puerto Rico (PR) were tested for antibodies to infection with dengue viruses (DENVs), West Nile virus (WNV), Leptospira species, and Burkholderia pseudomallei by microneutralization, plaque reduction neutralization, microscopic agglutination, and indirect hemagglutination, respectively. Of 23 animals (21 E. patas and two M. mulatta) tested, all had evidence of prior DENV infection, and of 17 animals tested for WNV, nine (53%) had evidence of prior infection. Of 24 (22 E. patas, two M. mulatta) tested for Leptospira spp., 10 (42%) had evidence of prior exposure, and one patas monkey had antibodies against B. pseudomallei. The acquisition of pathogens endemic among humans in PR by resident nonhuman primates merits further study to define modes of acquisition.

Simian hemorrhagic fever virus (SHFV) causes a fulminant and typically lethal viral hemorrhagic fever (VHF) in macaques (Cercopithecinae: Macaca spp.) but causes subclinical infections in patas monkeys (Cercopithecinae: Erythrocebus patas). This difference in disease course offers a unique opportunity to compare host responses to infection by a VHF-causing virus in biologically similar susceptible and refractory animals. Patas and rhesus monkeys were inoculated side-by-side with SHFV. Unlike the severe disease observed in rhesus monkeys, patas monkeys developed a limited clinical disease characterized by changes in complete blood counts, serum chemistries, and development of lymphadenopathy. Viral RNA was measurable in circulating blood 2 days after exposure, and its duration varied by species. Infectious virus was detected in terminal tissues of both patas and rhesus monkeys. Varying degrees of overlap in changes in serum concentrations of interferon (IFN)-&gamma, monocyte chemoattractant protein (MCP)-1, and interleukin (IL)-6 were observed between patas and rhesus monkeys, suggesting the presence of common and species-specific cytokine responses to infection. Similarly, quantitative immunohistochemistry of livers from terminal monkeys and whole blood flow cytometry revealed varying degrees of overlap in changes in macrophages, natural killer cells, and T-cells. The unexpected degree of overlap in host response suggests that relatively small subsets of a host&rsquo, s response to infection may be responsible for driving hemorrhagic fever pathogenesis. Furthermore, comparative SHFV infection in patas and rhesus monkeys offers an experimental model to characterize host&ndash, response mechanisms associated with viral hemorrhagic fever and evaluate pan-viral hemorrhagic fever countermeasures.

International audience; The determination of the trophic preferences of the Anopheles gambiae Giles (Diptera: Culicidae) is a decisive parameter for the monitoring and the prevention of malaria risk transmission. Currently, arthropod blood feeding sources are identified using immunological or molecular biology traditional techniques. Despite the effectiveness of these methods, they present several limitations, and notably, they are time-consuming and costly techniques. A recent study demonstrated that MALDI-TOF MS could be a useful tool for the identification of blood meal origins in freshly engorged mosquitoes. However, the limited number of blood vertebrate species tested to date, did not allow an assessment of the efficiency of MALDI-TOF MS in distinguishing blood MS spectra among close host species, such as humans versus primates. Therefore, in the present study, blood from ten distinct vertebrate host species, including four domestic species, four wild species, and two primates, was selected to control the reliability of MALDI-TOF MS based identification. Host blood species-specific MS profiles, up to 24 h post-feeding in engorged Anopheles abdomens, were confirmed. Blind tests underlined the high specificity of MS spectra for the recognition of each host species, preventing misidentification. Nevertheless, an accurate analysis of the results from MS spectra queried against the MS database revealed that the reliability of identification is directly linked to the comprehensiveness of the MS reference database. Finally, the rapidity, the low-cost reagents, the simplicity of data analysis, and the accuracy of the tool for blood origin determination, make this proteomic strategy a promising complementary method for the elucidation of host/vector interactions.

Little is known about the extent of primate abundance and distribution in Burkina Faso, West Africa. Only two prior surveys have been reported, each in just one protected area and one dating as far back as 1976. With this study, we aimed to update our understanding of primate presence in Burkina Faso. Between 11 May and 16 July 2012, we surveyed nearly 250 km in five protected areas along the southern border of the country, collecting data on the presence of primates, predators, and poaching activities. Although several sources have listed up to nine primate species as present in Burkina Faso, we were only able to confirm five of four genera: Galago senegalensis, Papio anubis, Erythrocebus patas, Chlorocebus sabaeus, and Chlorocebus tantalus. Maintenance of the diversity of primates depends not only on the conservation of protected areas, but also on the con- servation of areas that lack formal protection and are occupied by people, crops, and/or livestock. Livestock rangelands, when well-managed, can support viable populations of primates. This article describes (1) the primate community in the rangeland agro- ecosystem of Laikipia County, central Kenya, (2) how primates use this agroecosystem, (3) the importance of this agroecosystem to the primates of Laikipia, and (4) the threats to these primates. Patas monkeys Erythrocebus patas, olive baboons Papio anubis, vervet monkeys Chlorocebus pygerythrus, and northern lesser galagos Galago senegalensis in the Laikipia rangeland agroecosys- tem benefit from man-made perennial water sources, habitat protection, reduced large predator densities, and an array of research and conservation activities. The level of conflict between humans and non-human primates in this rangeland agroecosystem is low relative to that in neighboring cropland agroecosystems. The main threats are habitat fragmentation, degradation and loss, and the decline of perennial water sources. Hunting is not a serious threat to primates in Laikipia. Erythrocebus patas is the most threatened primate in Laikipia and the one least tolerant of humans and habitat degradation and loss. Habitat conservation in Laikipia should focus on water-associated vegetation types and the adjacent whistling thorn Acacia drepanolobium woodlands, particularly along the Ewaso N'yiro River and its major tributaries.

The potential risk of non-human primates in Senegal to be natural hosts for arboviruses of importance for human has been assessed. A total of 58 wild monkeys, including 14 Erythrocebus patas and 44 Chlorocebus sabaeus, were trapped at three sites within forest galleries and the nearby village of Ngari, in the Kedougou area, Southeastern Senegal. Blood samples were taken and sera analyzed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for the presence of Yellow Fever (YF) and/or Dengue 2 (DEN-2) reacting antibodies. An overall yellow fever seroprevalence of 22.4% was found, including 5.2% and 17.2% YF IgG positive E. patas (3/58) and C. sabaeus (10/58) respectively. Three of the positive C. sabaeus were trapped near Ngari village, and the others in forest galleries. Also, 12.0% of the primates tested positive including 5.2% of E. patas and 6.9% of C. sabaeus, all of them were from the forest galleries. Ultimately Cercopithecidae act as potential amplificatory reservoir hosts for YF virus and, seroconversion observed within wild C. sabaeus and E. patas demonstrates also an active DENV-2 virus circulation within non-human primates in Senegal. The present study addresses and discusses new insight of both viruses’ natural enzootic cycles. Key words: Yellow fever, Dengue, monkeys, Senegal.

Habituation has been the standard methodology used to study the natural history of great apes and other primates. Habituation has invaluable strengths, particularly in quantity and diversity of data collected, but along with these come substantial weaknesses, i.e., costs both in time and effort, health risks, and potential exposure of subjects to poaching. With new technologies, we are able to extend our studies beyond the limitations of habituation; camera traps are one technology that can be used to study unhabituated primate groups. In this study we used eight camera traps over the course of 2 yr (1542 camera trap days) to capture thousands of still images of West African savanna chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes verus) in the Faleme region of southeastern Senegal. Images corroborated behavioral observations from habituated chimpanzees at the Fongoli site, where researchers have observed nocturnal activity and cave use. The cameras also captured interspecies interactions at water sources during the dry season and allowed us to determine demographic composition and minimum community size. The photographs provide data on local fauna, including predators (Panthera pardus pardus, Panthera leo senegalesis, and Crocuta crocuta), potential prey, and competitor species (Papio papio, Cercopithecus aethiops, and Erythrocebus patas). As primate habitat across Africa is further threatened and human–wildlife conflict increases, camera trapping could be used as an essential conservation tool, expanding studies of primates without exacerbating potential threats to the species.

This paper describes the results of a survey of the gastro-intestinal helminth parasites in the faecal matters of fourteen wildlife species investigated in five sites in Radom National Park (R.N.P.), South Darfur State, Sudan. These sites were Radom area, Alhufra, Titrbi, Kafindibei and Kafiakingi. Out of 579 faecal matters examined, 177 were found containing eggs of helminth parasites with an overall prevalence of 30.6%. The Aardvark (Orycteropus afer) had the highest overall infection rate of helminth eggs (60%) (9/15), while the Patas monkey (Erythrocebus patas) showed the lowest prevalence (2.7%) (1/37). The helminth parasites recorded throughout this study included Ascaris spp., Trichuris spp., Haemonchus spp., Oesophagostomum spp., Toxocara spp., Trichostrongylus spp., Strongyloides spp., Moniezia spp. and Coccidia oocysts. Kafiakingi area showed the highest prevalence (35.9%) (65/181), followed by Kafindibei area (35.1%) (34/97) while Alhufra area showed the lowest prevalence (17.6%) (13/74). The results of this survey were compared and discussed with previous findings of similar studies conducted in Sudan and elsewhere.

This paper introduces a study to Blue Monkey (BM) algorithm, which is a new metaheuristic algorithm optimization based on the performance of blue monkey swarms in nature. The BM algorithm identifies how many males in one group. Normally, outside the season of the breeding, the groups of blue monkeys have only one adult male like other forest guenons. In addition to related patas monkeys (Erythrocebus patas). Forty-three of well-known test functions, which used in the area of optimization are used as benchmark to check BM algorithm, in addition, BM verified by a comparative performance check with Artificial-Bee-Colony (ABC), Gravitational Search Algorithm (GSA), Biogeography-Based Optimizer (BBO), and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). The obtained results demonstrated that BM algorithm is competitive compared with the selected metaheuristic algorithms; also, BM is able to converge towards the global optimal through optimization problems. Further, this algorithm is very efficient in field of dissolving real problems with restrictions and unidentified search space. It should be mentioned that the BM algorithm has some variables and it can obtain better results. in many test functions comparing with other algorithms.

Patas monkeys (Erythrocebus patas) living in African savanna woodlands and grassland habitats have a locomotor system that allows them to run fast, presumably to avoid predators. Long fore- and hindlimbs, long foot bones, short toes, and a digitigrade foot posture were proposed as anatomical correlates with speed. In addition to skeletal proportions, soft tissue and whole body proportions are important components of the locomotor system. To further distinguish patas anatomy from other Old World monkeys, a comparative study based on dissection of skin, muscle, and bone from complete individuals of patas and vervet monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops) was undertaken. Analysis reveals that small adjustments in patas skeletal proportions, relative mass of limbs and tail, and specific muscle groups promote efficient sagittal limb motion. The ability to run fast is based on a locomotor system adapted for long distance walking. The patas’ larger home range and longer daily range than those of vervets give them access to highly dispersed, nutritious foods, water, and sleeping trees. Furthermore, patas monkeys have physiological adaptations that enable them to tolerate and dissipate heat. These features all contribute to the distinct adaptation that is the patas monkeys’ basis for survival in grassland and savanna woodland areas.

Radom area showed the highest prevalence (13.9%) (49/352), followed by Kafiakingi (9.3%) (27/289), whereas Alhufra area showed the lowest prevalence (5.4%) (7/129). The results of this survey were compared and discussed with previous findings of similar studies in Sudan and elsewhere.

(See the major article by Andre-Schmutz et al on pages 235–43) Antiretroviral (ARV) drug combinations prevent the transmission of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) [1] in approximately 99% of the 10 000 HIV-1-infected women who become pregnant yearly in the United States. The nucleoside reverse-transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) are major components of the ARV combinations in clinical use. In addition, they become incorporated into nuclear and mitochondrial DNA of the host, resulting in the arrest of viral DNA replication [2], chromosome damage [3–5], and genomic instability [6]. Transplacental studies in mice showed incorporation of zidovudine (AZT) in fetal organ DNA, mutagenesis, and tumor induction in offspring [4, 7, 8]. Patas monkeys born to pregnant dams receiving AZT had AZT-DNA incorporation in nuclear and mitochondrial DNA of multiple organs [5] that was similar in magnitude to that observed in cord blood and umbilical cord DNA of human fetuses [2]. Furthermore, NRTI-induced mutagenicity was reported in human infants exposed in utero and during the perinatal period [2, 9], suggesting that these infants may be at risk for cancer induction [10]. To observe the fetal consequences of NRTI use in human pregnancy, we used pregnant patas dams exposed to clinically relevant ARV drug combinations in human-equivalent protocols. Some of the offspring were examined at birth and others were given the same drugs for the first 6 weeks of life and examined at 1 and 3 years of age. The patas placentation and NRTI pharmacokinetics are similar to those in humans [11], and because the patas cannot be infected with simian immunodeficiency virus, drug effects can be examined in the absence of virus.

Patas were not reported to carry a species-specific SIV, but SIVagm cross-species transmission to patas occurred in the wild. We report that patas share immunophenotypic features with natural hosts of SIV, i.e., low levels of CD4+ T cells and low CCR5 expression on CD4+ T cells. In one patas with undetectable levels of CD4+ T cells, experimental exposure to SIVagm did not result in infection. Remaining experimentally-infected patas showed an infection pattern similar to SIV infection in natural hosts. Thus, downregulation of CD4 and of CCR5 expression on CD4+ T cells may effectively control HIV acquisition and result in SIV extinction.

On the trail of the Lorax Dr. Seuss’s fanciful Lorax may have a real-life inspiration, with a scientific paper to back up the claim. A team reports that the patas monkey (Erythrocebus patas) may have been the muse for the conservationist Lorax, who speaks for the trees in Seuss’s famous tale of the same name (Nat. Ecol. Evol. 2018, DOI: 10.1038/s41559-018-0628-x). When Nathaniel J. Dominy, an evolutionary biologist, and Donald E. Pease, an English professor and Seuss biographer, got to talking at Dartmouth College—Seuss’s alma mater where both Dominy and Pease work—they homed in on Kenya’s patas monkey. Dominy remarked that the patas monkey, familiar to him from fieldwork, resembled a Seuss character. Meanwhile, Pease noted that Theodor Seuss Geisel (Seuss’s real name) had written 90% of “The Lorax” while visiting Kenya in 1970. What’s more, the patas monkey makes a whistling noise that could have inspired the “sawdusty sneeze”

Mitochondrial compromise has been documented in infants born to women infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1) who received nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) therapy during pregnancy. To model these human exposures, we examined mitochondrial integrity at birth and 1 year in brain cortex and liver from offspring of retroviral-free Erythrocebus patas dams-administered human-equivalent NRTI doses for the last half (10 weeks) of gestation. Additional infants, followed for 1 year, were given the same drugs as their mothers for the first 6 weeks of life. Exposures included: no drug, Zidovudine (AZT), Lamivudine (3TC), AZT/3TC, AZT/Didanosine (ddI), and Stavudine (d4T)/3TC. In brain and liver, oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) enzyme activities (complexes I, II, and IV) showed minimal differences between unexposed and NRTI-exposed offspring at both times. Brain and liver mitochondria from most NRTI-exposed patas, both at birth and 1 year of age, contained significant (p < 0.05) morphological damage observed by electron microscopy (EM), based on scoring of coded photomicrographs. Brain and liver mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) levels in NRTI-exposed patas were depleted significantly in the 3TC and d4T/3TC groups at birth and were depleted significantly (p < 0.05) at 1 year in all NRTI-exposed groups. In 1-year-old infants exposed in utero to NRTIs, mtDNA depletion was 28.8–51.8% in brain and 37.4–56.5% in liver. These investigations suggest that some NRTI-exposed human infants may sustain similar mitochondrial compromise in brain and liver and should be followed long term for cognitive integrity and liver function.

Mammals with restricted breeding seasons often show brief but intense bouts of male competition for mates and male reproductive success has been attributed to male competitive abilities, with the most aggressively successful males able to control access to fertile females, or with females choosing to mate with such males. We studied male competition, mating behaviour and female mate selection in patas monkeys, a primate with a restricted breeding period. We observed two habituated patas groups in Laikipia District, Kenya, during Jun.-Aug. 1983. During the study, one group had a single resident male while the other group had multiple adult males. Within the multimale group, experienced adult males were no more successful than the subadult male. The sole resident male had a significantly higher rate of fights won (p < 0.02) although he did not differ from the multimale group males in rate of aggression or initiation of fights. We found no significant differences in either mating success or female preference based on males' experience or residency. The rates at which males copulated with and were solicited by females were not significantly correlated. We found no evidence of stable dominance ranks among males in the multimale group and aggressive success was not significantly correlated with copulation rate for males in the multimale group. Subadult males were responsible for the majority of copulations observed during the final third of the breeding season. Our observations of this patas population showed a fluid number of males in groups, with the same groups able to shift rapidly from single to multimale structure. This fluidity may result from the large fluctuations in numbers of breeding-age males and females observed over 4 yr of studying this population.

A longterm study of a population of patas monkeys (Erythrocebus patas) in Kenya indicated fluid male residence patterns. While a single adult male was present in each of the two main study groups for most of each year, several males were present and mating in groups during some conception periods. Tenures of males in heterosexual groups were generally short; some males were resident in both groups and some had more than one tenure in the same group. When not in heterosexual groups, males lived as solitaries or in all-male associations.

When using symmetrical gaits, terrestrial digitigrade monkeys adopt less digitigrade, i.e., more palmigrade-like, hand postures as they move with faster speeds. Accordingly, it appears that, in contrast to other mammals, digitigrady is unrelated to cursoriality in primates. However, researchers have not documented the effects of speed on distal forelimb kinematics in faster asymmetrical gaits, i.e., galloping, when ground reaction forces are typically increased owing to the decreased number of contact points during a stride, combined with higher speed. Thus, it remains possible that primates use digitigrade hand postures during these higher-speed asymmetrical gaits. We investigated 3D angles in the wrist joint and metacarpophalangeal joint of 2 habitually digitigrade terrestrial monkeys, Erythrocebus patas and Papio anubis, across a large range of walking and galloping speeds on a motorized treadmill. Nonparametric analyses reveal that angles, and therefore hand postures, are not different at the subject’s walk-gallop transition. Regression analyses show that when walking, digitigrade postures are adopted at slow speeds and more palmigrade-like postures are adopted at fast speeds. Contrary to expectations, there is little change in hand postures across galloping speeds; both subjects maintained palmigrade-like hand postures with substantial joint yield and reextension during support. These results indicate that the hands are always less digitigrade at faster speeds because the joints of the distal forelimb cannot resist the higher ground reaction forces that accompany these higher speed gaits.

Potential influences on natal dispersal of wild male patas monkeys ( Erythrocebus patas ) were investigated in Laikipia, Kenya, over a four-year period. Changes in variables were assessed over the six months prior to dispersals. Dispersers left at between 24 and 42 months of age; 60% left at >36 months of age (= the 'large juvenile' age class). Most dispersals coincided with the presence of extra-group males in the study area. Large juvenile males (LJMs) reduced time in proximity to other group members prior to dispersal, driven primarily by less time in proximity to adult females. Aggression involving LJMs was typically rare, mild, and conducted at a distance. Overall aggression bout frequency did not change over time although mild aggressive interactions with the adult male increased in the weeks before LJMs left, suggesting LJMs forestall more serious aggression by leaving. Aggressive interactions with adult females decreased over time. Aggressive bout rates involving other immatures were consistently low. Our data most clearly support the conclusion that LJMs left of their own volition rather than being actively driven out by other group members. Relationships with other males, both inside and outside the natal group, seemed to influence the timing of LJMs' departures.

The socio-ecological model predicts that the quality, distribution, and patch size of food resources determines the dominance hierarchy of female monkeys based on the type of food competition they experience. Comparative studies of closely related species have evaluated the socio-ecological model and confirmed its validity. For example, female patas monkeys in Laikipia, Kenya, form a nonlinear and unstable dominance hierarchy (i.e., egalitarian), whereas females of sympatric, closely related savannah monkeys form a linear and stable dominance hierarchy (i.e., despotic), in accordance with the model's predictions of the characteristics of food resources. I compared agonistic interactions involving food between patas monkeys (Erythrocebus patas) and sympatric savannah monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops) in Kala Maloue, Cameroon. I found linear dominance hierarchies not only in savannah monkeys, but also in patas monkeys in Kala Maloue. The rates of agonistic interactions during feeding between patas monkeys were equivalent to those between savannah monkeys in Kala Maloue; further, these rates were significantly higher than those of both Laikipia patas and savannah monkeys. The results imply that patas monkeys in Kala Maloue are not egalitarian, but are despotic, similar to savannah monkeys. Disparity in the dominance hierarchies of patas monkeys between Kala Maloue and Laikipia were attributable to the differences in the characteristics of food resources. Although patas monkeys in Laikipia subsist on small and dispersed food resources within a high-density area, those in Kala Maloue subsisted on food resources that were clumped in intermediate-sized patches within a low-density area. This study shows that the socio-ecological model is applicable not only for interspecific comparisons but also for intraspecific comparisons.

Summary: Over the last century, only two cases of ocular oxyspirurosis were recorded in primates, both in zoos, and two species were described: in Berlin, Germany, Oxyspirura (O.) conjunctivalis from the lemurid Microcebus murinus, later also found in the lorisid Loris gracilis; in Jacksonville, Florida, O. (O.) youngi from the cercopithecid monkey Erythrocebus patas. In the present case from the Moscow zoo, oxyspirurosis was recorded in several species of Old World lemuriforms and lorisiforms, and some South American monkeys. i) The intermediate host was discovered to be a cockroach, as for O. (O.) mansoni, a parasite of poultry. The complete sequence identity between ITS-1 rDNA from adult nematodes of the primate and that of the larval worms from the vector, Nauphoete cinerea, confirmed their conspecificity. ii) Parasites from Moscow zoo recovered from Nycticebus c. coucang were compared morphologically to those from other zoos. The length and shape of the gubernaculum, used previously as a distinct character, were found to be variable. However, the vulvar bosses arrangement, the distal extremity of left spicule and the position of papillae of the first postcloacal pair showed that the worms in the different samples were not exactly identical and that each set seemed characteristic of a particular zoo. iii) The presence of longitudinal cuticular crests in the infective stage as well as in adult worms was recorded. Together with several other morphological and biological characters (long tail and oesophagus, cockroach vector), this confirmed that Oxyspirura is not closely related to Thelazia, another ocular parasite genus. iv) The disease in the Moscow zoo is thought to have started with Nycticebus pygmaeus imported fromVietnam, thus the suggestion was that Asiatic lorisids were at the origin of the Moscow set of cases. The natural host(s) for the Berlin and Jacksonville cases remain unknown but they are unlikely to be the species found infected in zoos. Consequently the notion of type hosts is artificial and the three agents of oxyspirurosis are provisionally placed in the taxon O. (O.) conjunctivalis.

Most quadrupeds walk with lateral sequence (LS) gaits, where hind limb touchdowns are followed by ipsilateral forelimb touchdowns. Primates, however, typically walk with diagonal sequence (DS) gaits, where hind limb touchdowns are followed by contralateral forelimb touchdowns. Because the use of DS gaits is nearly ubiquitous among primates, understanding gait selection in primates is critical to understanding primate locomotor evolution. The Support Polygon Model [Tomita, M., 1967. A study on the movement pattern of four limbs in walking. J. Anthropol. Soc. Nippon 75, 120-146; Rollinson, J., Martin, R.D., 1981. Comparative aspects of primate locomotion, with special reference to arboreal cercopithecines. Symp. Zool. Soc. Lond. 48, 377-427] argues that primates' use of DS gaits stems from a more caudal position of the whole-body center of mass (COM) relative to other mammals. We tested the predictions of the Support Polygon Model by examining the effects of natural and experimental variations in COM position on gait mechanics in two distantly related primates: fat-tailed dwarf lemurs (Cheirogaleus medius) and patas monkeys (Erythrocebus patas). Dwarf lemur experiments compared individuals with and without a greatly enlarged tail (a feature associated with torpor that can be expected to shift the COM caudally). During patas monkey experiments, we experimentally shifted the COM cranially with the use of a weighted belt (7-12% of body mass) positioned above the scapulae. Examination of limb kinematics revealed changes consistent with systematic deviations in COM position. Nevertheless, footfall patterns changed in a direction contrary to the predictions of the Support Polygon Model in the dwarf lemurs and did not change at all in the patas monkey. These results suggest that body mass distribution is unlikely to be the sole determinant of footfall pattern in primates and other mammals.

Effective reduction in maternal-fetal human immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV-1) transmission has been achieved by administration of nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) during pregnancy, and although most exposed children are clinically normal at birth, mitochondrial dysfunction has been reported. To examine mitochondrial integrity on a molecular level, we evaluated mitochondrial morphology by electron microscopy (EM) and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) quantity in umbilical cords and cord blood from NRTI-exposed and unexposed human and monkey newborns. Human subjects included infants born to HIV-1-infected mothers who received Combivir (Zidovudine [AZT] plus Lamivudine [3TC]) (n = 9) or AZT plus Didanosine [ddI] (n = 2) during pregnancy, and infants born to HIV-1-uninfected mothers (n = 7). NRTI-exposed Erythrocebus patas monkey dams (n = 3 per treatment group) were given human-equivalent dosing regimens containing 3TC, AZT/3TC, AZT/ddI, or Stavudine (d4T)/3TC during gestation. Four infants born to unexposed patas dams served as controls. Mitochondria in umbilical cord endothelial cells from NRTI-exposed monkey and human infants showed substantial abnormal pathology by EM, the extent of which was quantified from coded photomicrographs and shown to be different (P0.05) from the unexposed monkey and human newborns. Significant (P0.05) mtDNA depletion was found in umbilical cords from both human and monkey NRTI-exposed infants and in human, but not in monkey, cord blood leukocytes. For umbilical cords, an increase in mitochondrial morphological damage correlated with reduction in mtDNA quantity in fetal monkeys (r = 0.94). The treatment-induced mitochondrial compromise in infant monkeys ranked as follows: d4T/3TCAZT/ddIAZT/3TC3TC. The study demonstrates that transplacental NRTI exposures induce similar mitochondrial damage in cord blood and umbilical cords taken from retroviral-uninfected monkey infants and from human infants born to HIV-1-infected women.

Background Cyclospora is a protistan parasite that causes enteritis in several species of animals including humans. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of Cyclospora in captive non-human primates. Methods A total of 119 faecal samples from Pan troglodytes, Macaca sylvanus, Cercopithecus cephus, Erythrocebus patas, Chlorocebus aethiops and Macaca fascicularis from a wildlife animal rescue center as well as from Macaca fascicularis from an experimental primate research center were tested for the presence of Cyclospora by quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) and single-strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) analysis. Results Cyclospora was detected in three Pan troglodytes (13.6%) and nine (9.3%) Macaca fascicularis. Conclusions The present study represents the first record of Cyclospora in captive primates in Europe, suggesting the presence of Cyclospora cayetanensis, which is transmissible to humans.

C-type particles are found in human, baboon, marmoset, rhesus, patas, and cynomolgus monkeys. A cebus monkey and two chimpanzee placentas have failed thus far to show the presence of these particles. Of the nonprimate tissues examined one mouse and one guinea pig placenta were positive whereas a rabbit placenta was negative. Variations in number of particles present in tissues as well as number of animals of a given species containing particles are noted. The isolation of foamyviruses from placenta cultures makes critical evaluation and interpretation of findings imperative. Several considerations suggest that the presence of foamyviruses is coincidental.

Background Nonhuman primates are raised in large numbers in research centers and zoos. Reproductive monitoring is required to improve breeding performances. Ultrasonography is a safe method to determine gestational age and to estimate the date of parturition. However only few data are available in nonhuman primates. Methods Fetal biometric data were obtained throughout pregnancy on four African primate species, namely chimpanzee, gorilla, mandrill and patas monkey. Measurements included biparietal diameter, transverse abdominal diameter, femur and humerus length, external interorbital diameter, and fetal heart rate. Curves established from these data were compared with previously published data in chimpanzees and gorillas and with those for humans and other closely related primate species. Results The curves for the different hominids were very similar, while those for mandrills more closely resembled baboons and data for patas monkeys were comparable to those for macaques. Conclusions These data, by providing a tool to evaluate precise gestational age, will be useful for centers raising these four primate species.

Adult male red colobus (Procolobus tephrosceles) were observed capturing and killing an owl (Glaucidium perlatum) in the Rurama forest fragment near Kibale National Park in western Uganda. The owl was not subsequently eaten by the colobus, their conspecifics, or the other primates present during the attack. Because the incident was preceded by an agonistic encounter with a raptor, the event is best interpreted as a misdirected antipredator behavior. Although antipredator behaviors are not unknown in red colobus, this is the first such incident directed against a raptor to be documented.

Miss Waldron’s red colobus (Procolobus badius waldroni) has a restricted distribution in eastern Ivory Coast and western Ghana. There have been no confirmed sightings of them since 1978 and surveys carried out from 1993 to the present have yet to reveal any living individual. Since the announcement of the monkey’s probable extinction (Oates et al., 2000), new evidence from forest in the extreme southeast of Ivory Coast suggests that a handful of individuals have remained undetected to this point. I discuss the evidence—a tail, a skin and a photograph—and results of accompanying surveys. Additional surveys of the Ehy Forest are required to confirm the presence of Procolobus badius waldroni and an Action Plan for the conservation of all red colobus across the continent is needed to prevent the disappearance of other taxa.

Habitat structure can be important in determining habitat preference of animals because it is often closely linked to factors that affect survival and reproduction, such as food availability and predation risk. Here we examine the ways in which microhabitat structure and predation risk affect the habitat preference of wild patas monkeys (Erythrocebus patas). Patas monkeys in Kenya are typically restricted to Acacia drepanolobium habitat, but within our study group’s home range, there are two distinct microhabitats, one with taller trees (‘tall microhabitat’) and one with apparently perennially shorter trees (‘short microhabitat’). Examination of ranging behavior indicates that the patas monkeys preferred the tall microhabitat. In the tall microhabitat, focal animals climbed into trees that were significantly taller than average, indicating that they preferred tall trees. Female patas monkeys spent more time scanning from tall trees than from short trees and detected predators only from taller than average trees, based on alarm call data. Their use of tall trees may have decreased their predation risk by increasing their ability to detect predators. We found no evidence of increased food availability or reduced predator presence in the tall microhabitat that could contribute to the monkeys’ preference for the tall microhabitat.

This is the first molecular study to trace the evolutionary transition in substrate preference across a primate radiation. We surveyed 20 guenons (tribe Cercopithecini) and 4 outgroup taxa for two Y-chromosomal genes, TSPY ( approximately 2240 bp) and SRY ( approximately 780 bp), and one X-chromosomal intergenic region ( approximately 1600 bp) homologous to a fragment of human Xq13.3. Parsimony and maximum likelihood analyses of the sex chromosomal datasets consistently cluster the three terrestrial taxa, Cercopithecus aethiops, Cercopithecus lhoesti, and Erythrocebus patas, into a group that is reciprocally monophyletic with a clade of arboreal Cercopithecus spp. Given that the common ancestor of the two clades was most likely an arboreal taxon, this phylogenetic pattern suggests the transition to terrestriality occurred only once among the extant guenons. This pattern also indicates that the genus Cercopithecus is paraphyletic, as presently defined, and calls for taxonomic revision so that the nomen describes a strictly monophyletic group. We outline four acceptable taxonomic schemes and suggest that the most appropriate is to reassign C. aethiops, C. lhoesti, and E. patas to the resurrected genus Chlorocebus. Finally, while the phylogeny and taxonomy of terrestrial guenons were the focus of this study, the X-chromosome sequences presented here represent the first molecular evidence to unambiguously place Allenopithecus nigroviridis as the basal lineage of the tribe Cercopithecini.

The cardiorespiratory effects, effectiveness, and reversibility of two injectable anesthetic combinations were compared in captive patas monkeys (Erythrocebus patas). Seven patas monkeys were hand-injected with medetomidine (40 microg/kg, i.m.), butorphanol (0.4 mg/kg. i.m.), and ketamine (3.0 mg/kg. i.m.), and seven were injected with the same dosages of medetomidine and butorphanol plus midazolam (0.3 mg/kg, i.m.). Heart rates decreased in monkeys in both treatment groups and were lower than those previously recorded in patas monkeys anesthetized with either ketamine or ketamine and isoflurane. Mean arterial pressures were highest in ketamine-treated monkeys but remained within normal limits for both groups. End tidal CO2 values increased gradually over time in both groups and were above physiologic norms after 20 min. Respiratory rates were similar between groups and remained constant throughout the procedures. Despite adequate ventilation parameters, initial low percent oxygen-hemoglobin saturation (SpO2) values were suggestive of severe hypoxemia. It was not clear whether these were accurate readings or an artifact of medetomidine-induced peripheral vasoconstriction. Oxygen supplementation restored SpO2 values to normal (94%) in both groups. Both combinations effectively produced a state of light anesthesia, although spontaneous recoveries occurred after 30 min in three ketamine-treated monkeys. All monkeys were given i.m. atipamezole (0.2 mg/kg) and naloxone (0.02 mg/kg), whereas midazolam-treated monkeys also received flumazenil (0.02 mg/kg, i.v.), which resulted in faster (median recovery time = 5 min) and more complete recoveries in this group. Both combinations are safe to use when supplemented with oxygen, although the midazolam combination provided a longer anesthetic period and was more fully reversible.

Phytochemical or nutrient analyses of primate diets have revealed clues to their food selection in a single species. On the other hand, few interspecific comparisons of phytochemical or nutrient composition of primate diets have been made, although diets are considered to differ in phytochemical or nutrient content from primate species to species, since different species have different body weights and different morphological and physiological characteristics. I compared the nutrient content of diet between patas monkeys ( Erythrocebus patas) and tantalus monkeys ( Cercopithecus aethiops tantalus) living sympatrically in Cameroon. Patas subsisted on a smaller number of food items, most of which were also tantalus food items. Then, I compared the protein-fiber ratio and the available energy content of the food items eaten by patas (patas foods) with those items eaten only by tantalus (tantalus foods). Both variables were higher in patas than tantalus foods, although there was no significant difference in available energy of plant foods. Next, when I performed discriminant analysis for patas foods and tantalus foods, employing the above two variables, a discriminant function with positive coefficients for both variables was obtained. The mean discriminant-function score of patas foods was higher than that of tantalus foods. Despite being somewhat larger in weight, patas selectively fed on a smaller number of foods of higher quality than did tantalus. I discuss why the results are inconsistent with a well known body weight-diet relationship (Jarman-Bell principle). Energy-efficient locomotion enables patas to exploit not only small dispersed food items of high quality but also areas where high-quality foods are distributed in clumps.

By multiplex fluorescence in situ hybridization (M-FISH) that enables the simultaneous identification of 24 human chromosomes, we studied chromosomal homologies between humans (Homo sapiens, 2n=46) and 6 species of Old World monkey, namely, the vervet monkey (Cercopithecus aethiops, 2n=60), patas monkey (Erythrocebus patas, 2n=54), hanuman langur (Semnopithecus entellus, 2n=44), cynomolgus monkey (Macaca fascicularis, 2n=42), stump-tailed macaque (Macaca arctoides, 2n=42) and hamadryas baboon (Papio hamadryas, 2n=42). Individual human chromosomes were found to correspond to either one or two chromosomes of each monkey species without any detectable complex translocation involving more than 2 chromosomes. Based on chromosomal correspondences among these species, we propose a hypothetical karyotype phylogeny.
