Environmental risk perception has a long-time travel in the public participation in environmental fields. This perception involves individually socially constructed physical and mental experiences that involve many factors just for knowledge, attitudes, and the culture that develops in society. An individual's understanding of environmental risk provides an overview of an individual's preparedness for appropriate environmental risk strategies and measures. This cross-sectional survey study aims to collect data on the environmental risk perception of Indonesian students. The survey data instrument used in this study is the environmental risk perception scale (ERPS) questionnaire, transformed into Google Forms in the Indonesian language. The target respondents were 1,267 students from 1,300 undergraduate population size of educational study programs in the field of biology who came from various institutions in Indonesia. Sexual category, grade point average (GPA), and university status to explore the perception of the active student environment of prospective biology teachers with various parameters. The results showed several interesting findings: the female sex is more sensitive to environmental risks, academic abilities play a more logical role in environmental risk analysis, and respondents who have taken environmental courses have a higher sensitivity to environmental risk.

In this paper, we propose and study several inverse problems of identifying/determining unknown coefficients for a class of coupled PDE systems by measuring the average flux data on part of the underlying boundary. In these coupled systems, we mainly consider the non-negative solutions of the coupled equations, which are consistent with realistic settings in biology and ecology. There are several salient features of our inverse problem study: the drastic reduction of the measurement/observation data due to averaging effects, the nonlinear coupling of multiple equations, and the non-negative constraints on the solutions, which pose significant challenges to the inverse problems. We develop a new and effective scheme to tackle the inverse problems and achieve unique identifiability results by properly controlling the injection of different source terms to obtain multiple sets of mean flux data. The approach relies on certain monotonicity properties which are related to the intrinsic structures of the coupled PDE system. Biology education is crucial for living in a volatile, uncertain, complex, ambiguous, disruptive, and diverse environment. Moreover, most literature suggested developing learning activities for students based on the knowledge, attitudes, and skills competency gaps. Thus, this study assessed the academic performance in terms of their examination scores among the 150 randomly selected Grade Eight Biology students in different public schools in a rural municipality in Cebu, Philippines. It employed a descriptive research methodology. The test questionnaire was anchored on the Department of Education Learning Guide in determining the student's academic performance in Biology. The respondents' data were gathered from their Biology teachers and were expressed in frequencies and percentages. Data were computed using SPSS Statistics 27. The majority of the student's academic performance in Biology for Digestive System (n=65, 43.33%), Biodiversity (n=68, 45.33%), and Ecosystem (n=56, 37.34%) competencies indicate that the majority of the respondents' scores did not meet expectations. Our findings strongly recommend that teachers carefully plan and provide necessary learning activities based on the needs and knowledge gaps of the students in their instructional practices to give their students a thorough grasp of the topics covered in the Biology class.

Considering both the ecological niches of fungi and the different benefits they provide to humans, it is expected that students have a high level of scientific knowledge about living things in this kingdom. In the study, it was aimed to examine the learning of secondary school students about living things in the fungi kingdom. The research, which was carried out as a case study, was carried out with 52 secondary school students studying in the Central Anatolia Region of Türkiye in the 2022-2023 academic years. In the research, it was determined that the students had misconceptions and lack of knowledge about the classification of living things in the fungi kingdom, their diet, ecological functions and their effects on human life. The students stated that fungi take place in the world of plants, feed by photosynthesis and are used in making yogurt. According to these results, it is recommended to conduct studies on textbooks, teaching methods and teachers that cause students' misconceptions about living things in the fungi kingdom.

Although the empowerment of critical thinking (CT) has become an international concern that needs to be developed in the biology learning process for high school students, there still needs to be more relevant research literature. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of implementing reading, questioning, and answering strategies integrated with creative problem solving (RQA-CPS) with RQA, CPS, and discussion strategies. This method used the pretest-posttest non-equivalent control group design for one semester using four classes. We designed that the experimental group was taught with RQA-CPS, the control-I group was taught with RQA, the control-II group was taught with CPS, and the control-III group was taught with DP. This research involved 129 high school students in four classes with the topics Plantae, Animalia, Ecology and Environmental Change. These four topics are classified as complex material that requires CT to be able to understand in depth. The results showed that high school students' CT increased in all four classes, but the RQA-CPS group experienced the most significant increase and was significantly different compared to the other three control groups. Thus, the RQA-CPS strategy should be used in learning to improve students' CT.

Higher-order thinking skills (HOTS) is one of the skills needed for 21st century challenges, especially for students. The aim of this study was to describe HOTS in students, especially the cognitive domain of analyzing and evaluating. This is a descriptive quantitative study employing a Pretest-Posttest One Group research design. The experiment was limited to 34 students heterogeneously from class X-C SMAN 1 Nglames. The research instruments used include learning observation sheets and posttests for student academic score also analyze and evaluate skills. The findings revealed that the average of analyze and evaluate of HOTS Completeness was 79.40% with a good category. The classical completeness of students in learning was 82.35% with a very complete category. Thus, the problem-based learning model can reinforce students' analysis(C4) and evaluate(C5) in higher order thinking skills of ecosystem material.

This study aims to investigate Kazakhstani high school students' environmental knowledge, attitude toward the environment, environmental awareness, and environmental concern, and to present the effect of various extracurricular activities on high school students' knowledge, attitude, awareness, and concern. We surveyed 124 students at various grade levels. Results indicated that Kazakhstani students did not have a strong environmental knowledge base and their awareness of environmental issues is not strong at all, but they had a strong positive environmental attitude. There was no significant relationship between knowledge, attitude, and awareness based on grades in biology, chemistry, physics, math, and geography. Gender did not influence students' environmental knowledge, attitudes, and awareness but year in school did for environmental knowledge. Kazakhstani students were most concerned about air pollution, pollution of rivers and seas, and flooding, and they were the least concerned with overpopulation, radioactive waste, extinction of species, and climate change. Extracurricular activities did prove useful with increasing students' knowledge and awareness about environmental challenges but did not impact their environmental attitude. Our results imply that what is being taught about the environment in Kazakhstani schools is not substantial enough. Educators may modify the curriculum to better address environmental issues in the classroom and add more content and activities.

Undergraduate biology educators strive to understand how to best teach students the concepts of climate change. The root of this understanding is the establishment of what students know about climate change. This research aims to describe undergraduate biology students' conceptions of climate change and their argument practices and associated cognitive biases in how they think about the topic. We used qualitative conception interviews to obtain data from 26 American biology undergraduate students who predicted how climate change would affect a forested ecosystem after an average of 1° increase in Fahrenheit (0.5°C change) over 25 years. Through deductive coding, we found the majority of students' predictions agreed with expert ideas. However, the students used various argument strategies (i.e., Reasoning and Cognitive Biases) in defending their choices, including Ecological Explanations, Observations, Anchoring, and Contrast Effects.

Postsecondary science faculty face challenges in balancing the engagement of undergraduates and concomitantly ensuring they gain and retain knowledge, either in standard lectures or labs as well as in outdoor activities. Designing on-campus trails with interpretive signs may provide a unique avenue to inform students across majors of local biodiversity and tie in concepts related to ecology, organismal biology, and conservation. In this article, we evaluate the efficacy of course-specific interpretive signs deployed around a small on-campus natural area to engage first-year students. We assessed students' overall engagement level and retention of information conveyed across specific signs via a student-guided nature walk where students examined signs and answered both a pre- and post-activity survey, rated their favorite sign, and provided a short reflection on this outdoor activity. Students' responses indicated that they retained general information on specific signs, most notably regarding reptiles and what types of mammals are found around campus. Overall, students rated this activity as engaging, with 87.7% combined agreeing or strongly agreeing that signs helped them learn about the biodiversity and ecosystems on campus.

Virtual field trips are transforming education in biology and other place-based disciplines -- and not just since COVID-19 has imposed social distancing constraints. Efficient methods for content creation, combined with affordable immersive technology, provide the opportunity to integrate immersive experiences into ever-larger classes. However, many aspects of how immersive experiences can enrich and improve learning in place-based education are still not well understood. We present an empirical study, conducted in a large undergraduate ecology class, comparing students, that experienced an immersive virtual version of a field trip to a biological preserve as preparation for a later actual field trip to the site, with a control group that visited the real site but without having had the virtual experience. Within the virtual experience group, we also varied the quality of the headset. The VR field trip was well received for raising spatial awareness and also motivation and interest. Students ranked it higher than any traditional means with regard to achieving a high level of preparedness for the actual field trip. In contrast, no statistically significant evidence was found for differences in perceived learning outcome and enjoyment of the actual field trip.

Environmental science classes often ask students to examine changes in species or their environments to determine the human impact on a particular habitat or ecosystem. It is not always practical to take students out for a field study to do this kind of analysis; instead, the scientific method and diversity analyses can be utilized while students compare topographic maps, photographs, or paintings over time. In this article, we present three laboratories that use artwork (e.g., paintings or photographs) to have students examine anthropogenic alterations in the character of landscapes and explore how our connection with nature has changed over time. These laboratories can benefit educators looking for an interdisciplinary STEAM approach to introduce both biology majors and nonmajors to environmental science concepts and the scientific method in a highly relatable way.

The discovery of frog abnormalities by students on a school field trip in 1995 sparked hundreds of scientific studies in search of the cause of abnormality. This Socio-Scientific Issue has been used as an inquiry-based learning exercise for training in the practice of science, but it is also well-suited to teaching the nature of science. Our goal here is to provide an integrative resource for biology and environmental educators to integrate the nature of science into their course context. We introduce frog abnormalities in the context of a socio-scientific issue for teaching the nature of science, review the frog abnormality phenomenon, suggest appropriate educational methods for this SSI, and offer ideas for non-science educators to connect to the sciences.

The systems thinking approach requires understanding and interpreting complex systems. This review investigated how the systems thinking approach in science education is positioned in peer-reviewed empirical research articles and to identify the trends used in the current literature. A systematic review of open-access, empirical peer-reviewed articles indexed in the Web of Science database from first mention through the end of 2022 was conducted to analyze the studies on systems thinking in science education. This qualitative study used a content analysis approach to identify trends in the research area of systems thinking in science education. The results revealed that research on systems thinking in science education has increased in recent years, mainly from the United States and Germany. Most studies focused on middle and high school students, and ecosystems were the most frequently addressed domain-specific topic. More than half of the reviewed articles used complexity, relationships, components, interactions, interrelationships, and dynamics as characteristics of systems thinking. The results showed that there was uncertainty in the use of the characteristics, skills, and abilities of systems thinking, and that these three terms were used interchangeably. This research can provide evidence-based indications of areas that need further investigation in future research.

Black, Indigenous and people of colour (BIPOC) individuals are disproportionately impacted by the negative consequences of our ongoing environmental and climate crises, yet their valuable scientific voices are shockingly underrepresented within the fields of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (EEB). As early-career BIPOC EEB researchers, we recognise the key role that our fields play in understanding and mitigating the effects of our ongoing global crises, and are concerned about the lack of diversity we see among our own EEB cohorts and mentors. We present this piece as a call to action for the EEB Academy, drawing on our own experiences and the literature to suggest steps the Academy must take to increase representation of and equity for BIPOC graduate scholars in EEB. We synthesise these steps into four actionable ideas: anti-racism education and practice, increased funding opportunities, integration of diverse cultural perspectives and a community-minded shift in PhDs. Importantly, this advice is specifically directed at those who wield power in the Academy (e.g. funding agencies, societies, institutions, departments and faculty), rather than BIPOC scholars already struggling against inequitable frameworks in EEB., (© 2021 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.)

Research synthesis on simple yet general hypotheses and ideas is challenging in scientific disciplines studying highly context-dependent systems such as medical, social, and biological sciences. This study shows that machine learning, equation-free statistical modeling of artificial intelligence, is a promising synthesis tool for discovering novel patterns and the source of controversy in a general hypothesis. We apply a decision tree algorithm, assuming that evidence from various contexts can be adequately integrated in a hierarchically nested structure. As a case study, we analyzed 163 articles that studied a prominent hypothesis in invasion biology, the enemy release hypothesis. We explored if any of the nine attributes that classify each study can differentiate conclusions as classification problem. Results corroborated that machine learning can be useful for research synthesis, as the algorithm could detect patterns that had been already focused in previous narrative reviews. Compared with the previous synthesis study that assessed the same evidence collection based on experts' judgement, the algorithm has newly proposed that the studies focusing on Asian regions mostly supported the hypothesis, suggesting that more detailed investigations in these regions can enhance our understanding of the hypothesis. Course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs) introduce research leading to skills acquisition and increased persistence in the major. CUREs generate enthusiasm and interest in doing science and serve as an intervention to increase equity and participation of historically marginalized students. In the second-semester laboratory of our introductory sequence for biology and marine science majors at California State University Monterey Bay (CSUMB), instructors updated and implemented a field-based CURE. The goals of the CURE were to promote increased scientific identity, systems thinking, and equity at a Hispanic-serving institution (HSI). Through the CURE, students engaged in scientific writing through a research paper with a focus on information literacy, critical thinking, and quantitative reasoning as important elements of thinking like a scientist. Course exams also revealed that students showed gains in their ability to evaluate a new biological system using systems thinking. More broadly, because such field-based experiences demonstrate equity gains among Latinx students and a much greater sense of scientific identity, they may have impacts beyond introductory biology including in students' personal and professional lives.

One of the most pressing global problems today is the prevention of environmental crises is achieved only through targeted actions of people. In this regard, the search for ways out of the environmental crisis is being carried out, which is reflected in the laws "On environmental protection of the Republic of Kazakhstan", "Emergencies of natural and technogenic character ", as well as in state documents dedicated to environmental issues. as the "National Action Plan for Environmental Protection for Sustainable Development" adopted in our country. An environmental crisis is not the result of some mistakes in the technical or social development of society, it is a manifestation of a cultural crisis, which includes the relationship of people with each other and the system of interaction between society and nature. To get out of it, people need to master new value-normalized relationships, expand their environmental outlook, change the motto "economic efficiency" of society as a whole to "environmental efficiency." We believe that it is necessary to develop a new system of continuous environmental education and training to support these new trends and changes in cognitive / by cognitive /, value and practical orientation of the content of education. From this point of view, we tried to study the bioecological characteristics of plants in the Aral region of the Kyzylorda region as a regional component of teaching biology and to include the results obtained in the educational process. Studying the biology and ecology of plants in the Aral region of the Kyzylorda region, students express their patriotic feelings before their homeland, responsibility and views on nature conservation.

In this research, pre-service science teachers' writings written in a biology laboratory course were examined and the development of writings skills was monitored from the critical thinking skills perspective. In this context, the preservice teachers were asked to design and build a fully enclosed ecosystem model (bottle ecosystem), collect data from these ecosystems, and report on all processes. The observational case study design was used in this research and research was carried out with fifty-two preservice science teachers from a public university in Turkey. To determine the development of preservice science teachers' writing skills, unstructured focus group interviews and document review methods were used for data collection. The content analysis method was used for the analysis of the data. According to analyses, pre-service science teachers had difficulties in reflecting their critical thinking in their writings, but it was determined that they were able to improve themselves in the process. According to the research, if an appropriate learning environment is provided, preservice teachers can reflect their critical thinking in their writings, and this can improve their science literacy.

This research is conducted to identify the scientific conceptual cognition of ecosystem and the corresponding alternative conceptions by lower-secondary school students in Taiwan. Concept mapping, interviewing, and two-tier diagnostic test cannot make explicit reasoning pathways that students may use. Therefore, its purpose is to develop, validate, and utilize a three-tier multiple-choice diagnostic instrument for the ecosystem concept (TDIEC). The instrument can assist teachers in analyzing their students' reasoning. This does not only distinguish alternative conceptions from lack of knowledge but also determines the percentages of false positives and false negatives. One hundred and six students were tested with this instrument in Taiwan. The data analysis reveals common alternative conceptions shared by students, indicating that 35.59% of the samples had inaccurate conceptualizations of ecosystems. Common alternative conceptions of ecosystems include the following: (1) Only biological components constitute an ecosystem; (2) The Venus flytrap and pitcher plants are preys; (3) Competition is synonymous to predation; (4) Ecological balance refers to the sustainable circulation of energy and matter in the environment; and (5) The simpler the species, the more stable the ecosystem. It concludes with the interpretation of the results, suggestions for the application of the TDIEC, and correct alternative conceptions in Ecology classes.

The vast scientific heritage of Ernst Haeckel, evolutionist and thinker, comprises ecology as well. It is well known that it was he in 1866 introduced the term "ecology" for the science on interaction of the organisms and the environment. Haeckel built his system of the biological science (to be more precise, of the zoological science), including ecology, on the basis of Charles Darwin's evolutionary theory (the theory of natural selection). Traditionally, it is supposed that Haeckel's merit in world ecology is just the introduction of its name. However, there are few works devoting to development of Russian ecology. Actually, analysis of the impact of Haeckel's ecological views on Russian biologists and development of ecology in the first half of the last century demonstrates that widely used opinion should be corrected. I hypothesise that Haeckel's influence on Russian biologists was somewhat more than commonly thought. In spite of a rather long oblivion of the term "ecology" in the Russian literature followed by confusion of ecology and some other sciences (physiology, biogeography), some biologists saw in the Haeckel's understanding of ecology the base for synthesis of ecology and the evolutionary theory. There are some specific traits of Haeckel's influence on Russian biologists. At first, some of them accepted his evolutionary approach. Secondly, they highly appreciated his definition of ecology. Biologists defended such understanding of ecology even in the period of Lysenkoism pressure. At the same time, it is evident that Haeckel's influence on development of ecology was somewhat limited.

The use of scientific modeling has been shown to be highly effective in the learning of science content in multiple disciplines for non-English Learners (EL). However, the benefits of using this pedagogy with ELs have not been heavily explored. This article discusses the use of modeling-based evolution and population ecology pedagogical units in a sheltered biology high school class for ELs. A sheltered EL class is one where only ELs are enrolled and they learn both language and science concurrently. This article specifies the at the scaffolding used to adjust the pedagogy for this unique set of students. The effectiveness of this method was assessed using a convergent mixed method case study design. Data was collected using assessments in content, scientific reasoning and attitudes towards science (i.e., self-efficacy, fascination, and valuation of science) as well as teacher interviews, and classroom observations. The cases were an EL modeling-based sheltered biology class, and two non-EL inquiry-based biology classes, all at the upper secondary level. The EL modeling cohort achieved posttest comparison content scores that were not significantly different from the non-EL cohort and significantly higher posttest scientific reasoning scores. The effect sizes in both of these cases were much larger for the EL cohort. The affective assessments demonstrated intriguing results with the EL cohort having a greater fascination with science than the non-EL cohort but a decline in self-efficacy. Both cohorts valued science to the same extent. This methodology holds promise in helping to decrease the science gap between ELs and non-ELs taught with inquiry-based pedagogies.

Students in environmental sciences, ecology, or wildlife management are often reluctant to acquire training in basic laboratory techniques. To advocate the importance of this training, we reviewed literature in the fields of biological and environmental science for one frequently used technique--centrifugation--and evaluated whether centrifugation parameters are properly expressed. Centrifugation is used to extract and purify different types of biomolecules for further characterization or quantification. The repeatability of the procedure depends on the proper identification of parameters defining the gravitational force applied to a solution, for example the duration, distance from central axis, and angular velocity. Correctly expressing rotation velocity--the "speed"--is therefore crucial to ensuring repeatability and the possibility of using the same protocols in different laboratories. When scrutinizing the materials and methods sections of publications in ecology, zoology, botany, or general biology journals, we noticed that velocity is expressed in different ways and essential information is often missing. We sampled 2000 articles in different fields of biological sciences that recorded centrifugation as a technique in the materials and methods section. We found centrifugation velocity to be properly expressed in gravitational force "g" in only 47.8% of the papers. The score dropped to 40.4% in journals specialized in ecology. We use this analysis to advocate for a minimum of training in the techniques of biochemistry that are of common use in environmental sciences. Better training would allow higher reproducibility of results in scientific publications.

The scholars comprising journal editorial boards play a critical role in defining the trajectory of knowledge in their field. Nevertheless, studies of editorial board composition remain rare, especially those focusing on journals publishing research in the increasingly globalized fields of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Using metrics for quantifying the diversity of ecological communities, we quantified international representation on the 1985-2014 editorial boards of 24 environmental biology journals. Over the course of 3 decades, there were 3,827 unique scientists based in 70 countries who served as editors. The size of the editorial community increased over time-the number of editors serving in 2014 was 4-fold greater than in 1985-as did the number of countries in which editors were based. Nevertheless, editors based outside the "Global North" (the group of economically developed countries with high per capita gross domestic product [GDP] that collectively concentrate most global wealth) were extremely rare. Furthermore, 67.18% of all editors were based in either the United States or the United Kingdom. Consequently, geographic diversity-already low in 1985-remained unchanged through 2014. We argue that this limited geographic diversity can detrimentally affect the creativity of scholarship published in journals, the progress and direction of research, the composition of the STEM workforce, and the development of science in Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, and much of Asia (i.e., the "Global South").

The concept of biological diversity has inspired important discussions throughout the history of ecology. Although its meaning and usefulness have been questioned, it is currently one of the key artifacts of ecology. One way to try to understand why such a concept has undergone so many discussions is to examine its emergence and history from the epistemology perspective. In the present work, we investigated how the emergence of mechanical objectivity (as an epistemic virtue) and trained judgment affected how ecologists address the concept of biological diversity. Thus, we employed the theoretical framework of objectivity (provided by Daston and Galison in Objectivity. Zone Books, New York, 2007) to analyze different periods of scientific literature in ecology ("initial period": end of the nineteenth century and beginning of the twentieth century; "intermediate period": mid-twentieth century; "contemporary period": from the second half of the 1980s). Our results showed that the emergence of mechanical objectivity and trained judgment affected biological diversity research. In particular, the ideal of objectivity behind the way in which the concept of biological diversity is addressed in different fields of contemporary ecology could not be the same.

Biology is a complex science that includes different subjects. As a result, misconceptions, confusion and misleading are common problems in biology education. In this study, it was aimed to determine the learning of pre-service science teachers about food web. The research, using the case study, was conducted in 2019-2020. The study group of the research consists of 76 pre-service science teachers. The structured interview form and focus group interview were used to collect the data. As a result of the research, it was determined that pre-service science teachers have misconceptions, confusion and misleading about food web. When the reasons for the pre-service science teachers' misconceptions, confusion and misleading about food web were examined, it was found out that teachers, textbooks, supplementary textbooks and individual errors were the reasons. Pre-service science teachers should be supported with scientific training in order to learn the food web correctly. In addition, international scientific books should be used in the preparation of textbooks on food web.

This study examined the effects of concept maps on Senior School students' achievement in ecology in Ogbomoso, Nigeria. Quasi-experimental design was employed. The population for the study was all SSII Biology students in Ogbomoso South. Four intact classes of 267 students (115 males and 152 females) were sampled. The instrument was Biology Achievement Test. The data were analyzed using "t"-test, and analysis of covariance findings of the study showed that significant difference exited in the achievement of students taught ecological concepts in biology. It was recommended that biology students should be exposed to concept maps in the learning of biology.

The theory of evolution can be a useful basis for developing students' understanding of ecology. Our study used concept maps to examine the development of sixth-grade students' understanding of the Antarctic ecosystem following several evolution 'Science Days' conducted at 'Nature Campus' -- an informal learning environment comprised of a natural history museum, zoological and botanical gardens. The programme included physical experiences, such as observations and measurements of fossils, skeletons and mounted specimens, and observations in the zoological and botanical gardens. After the first and fourth days, the students watched the film 'March of the Penguins,' and were asked to draw concept maps depicting the penguins' lives. These maps were then analysed to assess: (a) the changes in the students' depictions of the ecosystem's complexity, and (b) the manner and extent to which they used ideas and concepts in evolution to explain phenomena in the Antarctic ecosystem. We found that the students' concept maps increased in complexity, and their post-maps incorporated concepts in evolution from their experiences at Nature Campus. Our results therefore emphasise the benefits of fundamentally changing how biology education is divided and defined, and transitioning to a more holistic approach that acknowledges the interdisciplinary nature of biological phenomena.

Ecology and environmental (EE) biology has low representation of Black Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC). Degree completion and career placement in EE often fail due to poor consideration of the intersections among student lived experiences and the academic support, peer community support, mentoring, and leadership development that they receive. The demographic composition of these disciplines, which are situated within the geosciences, differs from the composition of the broader society and will continue to do so until biases associated with the dominant culture are remedied. Lack of diverse representation leaves young people of color unable to visualize themselves in EE careers, which contributes to their not pursuing EE programs, majors, and career placement. As Black ecologists, we share narratives that include lessons gained from our individual journeys through undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral positions emphasizing experiences that supported our successful recruitment into our current academic positions. Throughout, we emphasize intersections of identity and persistence in EE. We assert that colorblind interventions to promote diverse participation in EE will be inadequate to affect meaningful increases in BIPOC participation. We highlight the value of diverse mentors, institutional support, and institutional commitment to diversity across multiple institutions. Additionally, we offer recommendations in support of BIPOC student retention in EE and the geosciences. Increasing diversity in EE will involve reassessment of how ecologists and environmental biologists are defined, interventions that support BIPOC retention at all career stages, and critical assessment of cultural biases in EE education and field experiences.

This study examines the development of the concept of the ecological niche among 10-11-year-old students and their ability to use this concept to give their opinions on the socially relevant and controversial possibility that wolf populations might be established in the mountains surrounding the school. A total of 21 elementary school students were engaged in an authentic school inquiry project about the wolf during which they undertook a series of diverse activities, such as searching for information about the wolf's biology, field work and modelling activities in order to perform a habitat suitability analysis. Starting with a Qualitative Content Analysis approach, a mixed method approach was applied to analyse students' drawn and written productions about (a) the wolf's survival requirements; and (b) the viability of its establishment in the region. Results show how the complexity and the sophistication of the ecological niche concept improve, and how the consideration of biotic, abiotic and anthropic factors change during instruction. Difficulties encountered by students in using such a concept in a new context are also highlighted. Implications for education are considered.

In the context of England, secondary biology education is dominated by sub-organismal systems, such as physiology, often to the detriment of evolution & ecology and impeding an integrated understanding of biology. This paper proposes a framework that teachers could use to help them consider how the learning of physiological and developmental systems can be combined with ecological and evolutionary thinking. Thus, keeping a balance between anthropomorphic contexts, and those of nature. The framework has two axes: physio-developmental -- ecology, and contemporary -- evolutionary, from which four quadrants emerge for consideration during topic design. It is proposed that topic design in general should be centred on the whole organism in its environment, which would ensure that physiological phenomena are contextualised in the organism's ecology. Furthermore, it is proposed that by pedagogical use of comparative biology, an evolutionary perspective can be integrated with organismal systems and ecology, whilst also offering more opportunities for students to discern the pattern being studied and be exposed to more non-human organisms. The framework is designed for practising teachers and would not require a radical change in pedagogy or teaching resources, but a new way of seeing the content and organisation of the course.

Forest learning has been encouraged globally in recent years as it regularly provides opportunities to interact with nature and one's own abilities. The contributions of forest and traditional kindergarten and home environment to children's ecological cognition and how ecological cognition relates to executive function (EF) is understudied. Therefore, this study evaluates the ecological cognition and EF of children from traditional and forest kindergartens along with home environment involvement in sustainability behavior. A total of 78 children, their teachers, and parents were recruited for this study. The children's ecological cognition and EF levels were tested using a series of tasks and short interviews. Home persuasion related to sustainability behavior was assessed by questionnaire. The analysis revealed that forest kindergarten is the main factor that is involved in children's ecological cognition and EF. The discussion outlines the trajectories and factors that delineated children's cognitive growth when sustainability was part of their education

The article presents the results of an exploratory-qualitative study about children´s conceptions of ecology in relation to media messages. The objective of the study has been to identify the role of ecologism and environmental campaigns on ecology conceptions of 105 6th grade children, age 10-12, from an educational institution in Bogota, Colombia. A multi-method study, with an open-ended questionnaire and the use of drawings, has been conducted to explore students' conceptions about ecology and its role; the concept of ecosystem and systemic thinking; and the identification of the sources of information. A content analysis, with theoretical categories based on the theory of social representation, has been applied. Results indicate that participants often relate ecology to recycling, separation of solid residues, and the care and conservation of the environment. Children do not refer to ecology as scientific theory probably because of the general discourse circulating in the media. The authors suggest that results have strong implications for biology education, especially about the ecology process, requiring the teacher's intervention to expand the children's conceptual profile and scientific knowledge.

Environmental education in school lessons makes a central contribution toward implementing the United Nations' requirement of sustainable development. In science lessons, various ecosystems can be examined to illustrate the consequences of anthropogenic influences on our environment. One important ecosystem is the UNESCO World Heritage Wadden Sea. This has not been considered in science education research so far. The present study determines the effects of environmental education on the Wadden Sea on environmental psychological constructs. Therefore, 157 students (age: M = 14.4 years, SD = 0.5) were tested in a pre-post design with a subsequent follow-up test to determine changes in connectedness with nature and environmental attitudes as a result of the lessons. The Inclusion of Nature in Self Scale was used to elicit nature connectedness, and environmental attitudes were based on the Two Major Environmental Values model. For the statistical analysis of the data, a one-factor analysis of variance with repeated measures was performed in each case. Statistically significant short-term and long-term positive effects of the educational intervention on students' environmental attitudes and connectedness with nature were found. Thematizing the Wadden Sea in school lessons was found to promote the corresponding attitudes in the short term and long term.

Background: The ongoing transformation of the interplay between human beings and nature calls for new ways of learning. Although established educational practices merging sciences and arts have been studied before, the focus has been mainly on science or technology-discipline-orientated aspects. More research is needed on the characteristics of learning that address nature and the biological through art-based practices. Methods: Utilizing a case study approach, a week-long multidisciplinary project developed around bioart-making, and implemented in a Finnish upper secondary school, was scrutinized. The main data consisted of transcribed participant interviews and textual and visual material from a project blog. The data were analyzed using qualitative theory-driven content analysis to describe and understand the cross-boundary processes and human-nature interactions taking place within the project. Findings: Bioart-making constituted as a boundary object bringing together different understandings of nature. Identification, coordination, reflection, and transformation processes on different levels emerged as a part of and as an outcome of bioart-making. In and through these, learners interacted with nature through intertwined events of material-experiential utilization, cognitive knowledge-building, emotional connecting, and philosophical reflection. Contribution: This paper advances the theoretical discussion on integrative art-based practices' potential, especially in relation to learning that addresses nature and the biological.

Covering up to: 1999-2016This highlight covers a family of enzymes of growing importance, the sedoheptulose 7-phosphate cyclases, initially of interest due to their involvement in the biosynthesis of pharmaceutically relevant secondary metabolites. More recently, these enzymes have been found throughout Prokarya and Eukarya, suggesting their broad potential biological roles in nature.

Because the escalating loss of species is one of the most serious environmental crises we face, it is vital that students of biology comprehend and can communicate the roles that biodiversity plays in the functioning of ecosystems. Here, we report on a laboratory experiment that has been highly successful in our introductory biology courses at demonstrating the role of biodiversity in the productivity of ecosystems. Students created microcosms consisting of six species of phytoplankton grown separately (monocultures) and in mixtures (polycultures) in 50-mL beakers. On average, monocultures were less productive than three-species polycultures, which in turn were less productive than six-species polycultures. However, the productivity of the polycultures was generally no greater than the productivity of the most productive monocultures--a result that suggests a lack of positive ecological interactions (e.g., facilitation or niche complementarity). In contrast, there was some evidence of negative interactions among species (e.g., predation and allelopathy) that caused some polycultures to be less productive than monocultures of their constituent species. Performing this structured-inquiry experiment provided students with an opportunity to apply aspects of the scientific method in a non-trivial manner to address issues of relevance to both basic ecology principles and applied disciplines with economic significance. The protection of earth's biodiversity requires a sophisticated understanding of how human activities can affect the relative abundances of species in natural ecological communities. Here, we report on an introductory biology laboratory activity in which students quantified biodiversity while investigating one of the most important controls on the biodiversity of an ecosystem: nutrient availability. Students established microcosms of six species of phytoplankton ("algae") in 50-mL beakers and exposed them to five different levels of inorganic nutrients. After two weeks, students used hemocytometers to count cells and compare the relative abundances of the algal species (i.e., their community composition) at different nutrient levels. The effect of nutrient level on biodiversity (measured by Simpson's reciprocal index) was significantly curvilinear, and best described as "U-shaped." Specifically, the algal community was most diverse at the lowest nutrient level, least diverse with a small amount of added nutrients, and intermediate in diversity at the highest nutrient levels. This convenient, quantitative investigation provided students an opportunity to consider how anthropogenic influxes of nutrients into ecosystems can lead to eutrophication, and how this phenomenon can have negative effects by decreasing the biodiversity of ecological communities. Faculty at all types of colleges and universities struggle with how smartphone use may enhance or diminish their pedagogy, in part because evidence-based data is lacking for most types of classrooms. Thus, we conducted a thorough investigation in an introductory biology lab course to determine how smartphones affected myriad aspects of student learning and engagement. There were no significant differences in exam scores, the amount of time spent studying, occasions students were off task, or questions asked to the instructor. There were, however, significant differences in several measures of engagement and time management; students allowed to use their smartphones spent 64% less time in peer-to-peer interactions, 46% less time taking notes, 70% less time handling specimens, and 31% less time in lab compared to students who were not allowed to use smartphones. Because these behaviors, in particular peer engagement and note taking, are fundamental skills best developed early in a successful undergraduate career, our results suggest smartphone use should be minimized in introductory biology laboratories.

I teach an animal behavior course where students conduct independent research projects; however, using live animals for research is challenging at a small university. Often, students choose to conduct a laboratory project over a field project believing that it will be easier to observe animals and control variables, but it can be difficult and expensive to acquire and maintain animals. If students work with vertebrates, there are added complications such as obtaining Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) approval and training. Additionally, following IACUC regulations often involves resources that we do not have. Because of these complications, I suggest to students that they consider an invertebrate species for their projects. In particular, crayfish are a species that are easy to obtain and care for, have low mortality, and exhibit interesting behavior that can be observed over several weeks. This article describes an inquiry-based research activity examining the influence of habitat complexity on crayfish foraging. This activity is well suited for students in ecology, animal behavior, or invertebrate biology classes and gives students flexibility in the hypothesis they test and the methods they use, while providing a framework that lets them successfully complete a behavior project.

The history and evolution of science assessment remains poorly known, especially in the context of the exam question contents. Here we analyze the Finnish matriculation examination in biology from the 1920s to 1960s to understand how the exam has evolved in both its knowledge content and educational form. Each question was classified according to its topic in biology, and its cognitive level by Bloom's taxonomy. Overall, the exam progressed from a rather dichotomous test of botany and zoology to a modern exam covering biology from biochemistry to environmental science, reflecting the development of biology as a scientific discipline. The contribution of genetics increased steadily, while ecology witnessed a decline and a renaissance during the same time period. The biological profile of the questions was established by the 1950s. The educational standard and cognitive demand of the questions was always high and established by the 1940s.

Plant identification is a skill that takes years to hone and develop, yet it is important in understanding diversity in biology while in school. This is highlighted when studying ecological succession in A-level biology where students are often unable to notice the different species, which leads to the production of poor-quality data, potentially frustration and the development of misconceptions. Here we present a strategy to improve recognition of plant species ahead of fieldwork, using a simple card game called Dune Battle. This has been shown to improve the quality of data obtained independently by students, which reduces the demand on teachers to facilitate identification.

The aim of this study was to investigate the visual images of pre-service teachers who take biology courses in undergraduate education about biology by analyzing their drawings. The research was conducted with 97 pre-service teachers, studying at the education faculty of a university in Turkey and taking biology course during undergraduate training. Science teaching and classroom teaching departments were included in the research. In the study, the data collection tool has been applied based on voluntariness of preservice teachers. In the first part of the data collection, information about preservice teachers' department, grade level and gender were collected. In the second part, pre-service teachers were given a blank A4 paper and asked to draw a picture explaining the concept of biology. Pre-service teachers completed their drawings in approximately 20 minutes. Content analysis was used in the analysis of the drawings. Categories and codes were first determined in the analysis of the data. Drawings were coded separately by two researchers. Then, in order to ensure inter-coder reliability, the codes were evaluated together, and a decision was reached. The analysis of preservice teachers' drawings about biology shows that ecology and ecosystem concepts came to the mind of the majority when biology is mentioned. The general result of the research can be stated as the visual images of pre-service teachers about biology are mostly shaped within the framework of ecology.

The ability of powerful and well-funded interest groups to steer scientific research in ways that advance their goals has become a significant social concern. This steering ability is increasingly being recognized in the peer-reviewed scientific literature and in findings of deliberative scientific bodies. This paper provides a case study that illustrates some of the major strategies that can be used to structure and advance a controversial research field. It focuses on hormesis, described as a type of dose-response relationship in toxicology and biology showing low-dose stimulation but high-dose inhibition, or the reverse. Hormesis proponents tout its significance, arguing that substances toxic at high doses and beneficial at lower doses should be regulated less stringently. We identify five strategies employed by hormesis proponents to foster its acceptance: (1) creating institutions focused on supporting hormesis; (2) developing terminology, study designs, and data interpretations that cast it in a favorable light; (3) using bibliometric techniques and surveys to attract attention; (4) aggressively advocating for the phenomenon and challenging critics; and (5) working with outside interest groups to apply the hormesis phenomenon in the economic and political spheres. We also suggest a number of oversight strategies that can be implemented to help promote credible and socially responsible research in cases like this one.

At the present time, there is considerable interest for the physical setting of science, that is, its actual 'place' of practice. Among historians of biology, place has been considered to be a crucial component for the study of ecology. Other historians have noted the 'built' environments (laboratories) for the study of biology along the seashore, even referring to these places in terms more applicable to vacation sites. In this paper, I examine the place of intertidal ecology investigations, both in terms of the physical space and the built space. Part of the examination will investigate the aesthetic aspect of the Pacific Coast, part will evaluate the unique character of the intertidal zone, and part will consider the construction of natural laboratories and built laboratories as characteristic places for biology.
