A high-resolution integrated stratigraphy is presented for the Late Quaternary in the southern-eastern Tyrrhenian Sea. It is based on calcareous plankton taxa (planktonic foraminifera and nannoplankton) distribution, δ 18 O G lobigerinoides ruber record, tephrostratigraphy and radiometric dating methods ( 210 Pb and 137 Cs, AMS 14 C) for a composite sediment core (from the top to the bottom, C90-1m, C90 and C836) from the continental shelf of the Salerno Gulf. High sedimentation rates from ca 1 cm/100 y for the early Holocene, to 3.45 cm/100 y for the middle Holocene to 8.78 cm/100 y from late Holocene and to 20 cm/100 y for the last 600 AD, make this area an ideal marine archive of secular paleoclimate changes. Quantitative distributional trend in planktonic foraminifera identify seven known (1F–7F) eco-biozones, and several auxiliary bioevents of high potential for Mediterranean biostratigraphic correlation. Recognised were: the acme distribution of Neogloboquadrina pachyderma r.c. between 10.800 ± 0.400 ka BP and 5.500 ± 0.347 ka BP, a strong increase in abundance of Globorotalia truncatulinoides r.c. and l.c. at 5.500 ± 0.347 ka BP and at 4.571 ± 0.96 ka BP, respectively, an acme interval of Globigerinoides quadrilobatus (between 3.702 ± 0.048 ka BP and 2.70 ± 0.048 ka BP) and the acme/paracme intervals of T. quinqueloba (acme between 3.350 ± 0.054 ka BP and 1.492 ± 0.016 ka BP; paracme between 1.492 ± 0.016 ka BP and 0.657 ± 0.025 ka BP; acme beginning 0.657 ± 0.025 ka BP). These results, integrated with trends of selected calcareous nannofossil species ( Florisphaera profunda, Brarudosphaera bigelowii, Gephyrocapsa oceanica and Emiliania huxleyi ) and δ 18 O G. ruber signature, are consistent with the most important pre-Holocene and early Holocene paleoclimatic and paleoceanographic phases i.e., the Bolling–Allerod, the Younger Dryas and the time interval of Sapropel S1 deposition in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. These features revealed the high potential of this shallow water environment for high-resolution stratigraphy and correlation for the western Mediterranean. In addition, the chemical characterization of seven tephra layers supplied further data about the age and the dispersal area of some well-known Campi Flegrei explosive events, inferring the possible occurrence of explosive activity at Vesuvius around the middle of the 6th century, and contributing to refine the tephrostratigraphic framework for the last 15 ka in the south-eastern Tyrrhenian Sea.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are flame retardants, characterized by elevated stability in the marine environment, where are accumulated by organisms, inducing a wide panel of negative effects. In this study, some biochemical patterns related to toxicity, biotransformation and oxidative stress, were studied in the marine model system, Mytilus galloprovincialis, exposed to BDE-47. Mussels were fed with microalgae, previously treated with increasing concentrations of PBDEs (maximum dose 100 ng L-1 of BDE-47 per day). After 15 days of treatment, mussels were fed with the same diet without BDE-47, for additional 15 days. Gills and digestive glands were analyzed at T 0, at 15 and 30 days. Histopathological lesions were assessed in digestive glands of contaminated mussels, while expression of genes, related to cell cycle, multidrug resistance, oxidative stress and detoxification was evaluated on both gills and digestive glands. After 15 days, BDE-47 exposure significantly affected the cell activity in digestive gland and, at 30 days, only mussels exposed to the lower doses showed a certain recovery. Regarding the gene expression, both gills and digestive glands showed a significant down-regulation of the target genes at 15 days, although most of them were up-regulated at 30 days in digestive gland. The results on BDE-47 accumulation in mussels revealed a dose-dependent concentration in tissues, which remained elevated after further 15 days of depuration. This trend supports the responses of the biomarkers, indicating that exposure, at environmentally realistic concentrations of BDE-47, strongly modulates oxidative stress and related patterns of gene expression, suggesting concerns for long-term effect in the biota.

Isotopic composition of mercury (Hg) in marine organisms and sediment cores was used to identify sources and reconstruct historical trends of contamination in the coastal-marine area of Rosignano Solvay (Italy), affected by Hg pollution from a chlor-alkali plant on the near land. Sediments show a wide range of Hg concentration and Hg isotope signatures. Particularly, coupled Hg concentration and δ202Hg values trace inputs from different sources. The two depth-profiles clearly indicate three distinct periods: “pre-industrial” (before 1941), “industrial” (between 1941 and 2007) and “post-industrial” (after 2007) ages. This is also corroborated by sediment chronology, using 210Pb dating method, validated through 137Cs. Marine organisms are characterized by Hg isotope signatures comparable to “post-industrial” surface sediments. Notably, specimens of Mullus spp. evidence isotope composition comparable to the “industrial” sediments, thus suggesting a still active role of those sediments as source of Hg for the benthic fish compartment. The small amount of MIF and the Δ199Hg/Δ201Hg ratio recorded in organisms are reasonably consistent with limited processes of MMHg demethylation in the water column.

In this study we analyzed Hg and Se concentrations in dolphin brain tissues of fifteen specimens of striped dolphin (Stenella coeruleoalba) and eight specimens of bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) stranded in the Tyrrhenian and Adriatic Seas, in order to assess the toxicological risks associated with Hg exposure. High Hg concentrations were found in brain tissues of both analyzed specie (1.86–243 mg/kg dw for striped dolphin and 2.1–98.7 mg/kg dw for bottlenose dolphin), exceeding levels associated with marine mammals neurotoxicity. Althougth the results clearly suggest that the protective effects of Se against Hg toxicity occur in cetaceans’ brain tissues, a molar excess of mercury with respect to selenium was found, particularly in adult specimens of Stenella coeruleoalba. On contrary, negligible neurotoxicological risks were found for Tursiops truncatus specimens, due to detoxification processes. Data obtained allowed to prove a more marked neurotoxicological risk for adult specimens of Stenella coeruleoalba in both Tyrrhenian and Adriatic Seas.

The study of planktonic organisms during abrupt climatic variations of the last glacial period (Dansgaard-Oeschger oscillations, D-O) may reveal important insights on climatic, oceanographic and biological interactions. Here we present planktic foraminifera and coccolithophore data collected at the Ocean Drilling Program Site 963 (Sicily Channel), with a mean sampling resolution of respectively 43.5 and 98.9. yr, over the interval between 70,000 and 20,000. yr ago. The paleoenvironmental reconstruction suggests that three different scenarios can be seen across each D-O cycle: 1. oligotrophic surface water and a deep thermocline for the early Interstadials; 2. a Deep Chlorophyll Maximum and coccolithophore winter/spring blooming in the late Interstadials; 3. reduced productivity together with the shallowing of the nutricline depth during Stadials and Heinrich events. The unique mode of productivity dynamics is corroborated by comparing our paleoecological results with those published from high-resolution cores in the Alboran Sea clearly indicating reduced trophic levels during Stadials and Heinrich events. Finally, we argue that the density contrast between the Atlantic water inflow and subsurface water may have affected productivity dynamics in such a large area. The strong vertical density gradient may have hampered the vertical convection of the water column, producing a negative effect on biological productivity, especially during Stadial phases. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

The cyclic development of anoxic conditions in the eastern Mediterranean deep sea waters is one of the most fascinating research topics in paleoceanographic studies. In combination with bottom water stagnation, enhanced primary production is a common explanation for the deposition of organic-rich layers (sapropels). This is supported by extensive evidence from both geochemical and micropaleontological studies. The correspondence of recent sapropel layers with peaks of the lower photic zone coccolithophore species Florisphaera profunda has been interpreted as a proxy for the development of a deep chlorophyll maximum (DCM), due to the pycnocline/nutricline shallowing into the lower part of the photic zone. We present millennial-scale data for coccolithophore assemblages from sediments across the most recent sapropel (S1), in the ODP Hole 964B drilled in the Ionian Sea. Relative and absolute abundances of taxa are compared with selected elemental composition of the bulk sediments. The Mn/Al and Ba/Al profiles are used to determine the original thickness of the S1 interval, and show that the upper part of S1 was affected by post-depositional oxidation of organic matter. The Nannofossil Accumulation Rate, defined by the number of coccoliths·cm− 2·kyr− 1, suggests that there is no evidence of increased productivity within most of the sapropel layer. In fact, coccolithophore production was at its minimum in the lower part. Minimum coccolith concentrations are reached despite the increase in F. profunda in both relative and absolute abundance. We suggest that the DCM deduced from the increased productivity of this species did not significantly contribute to the putative overall increased primary productivity during the deposition of most of the sapropel layer. Within the upper oxidized part of S1, coccolith accumulation was at least five times higher than in the lower part. This period of high coccolith productivity finds a counterpart in the increase of the Ba/Al ratio. The total concentration of coccoliths is again controlled by the amount of E. huxleyi, but it is also supported by concomitant increases in all the other groups, suggesting that coccolithophore productivity increased throughout the year and through the total vertical extent of the photic zone. At site 964, this is apparently the only moment when coccolithophores contributed substantially to the increased primary productivity generally assumed for the S1 layer.

Crise, A. ... et. al.-- 12 pages, 1 figure, 5 tables, PERSEUS project aims to identify the most relevant pressures exerted on the ecosystems of the Southern European Seas (SES), highlighting knowledge and data gaps that endanger the achievement of SES Good Environmental Status (GES) as mandated by the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD). A complementary approach has been adopted, by a meta-analysis of existing literature on pressure/impact/knowledge gaps summarized in tables related to the MSFD descriptors, discriminating open waters from coastal areas. A comparative assessment of the Initial Assessments (IAs) for five SES countries has been also independently performed. The comparison between meta-analysis results and IAs shows similarities for coastal areas only. Major knowledge gaps have been detected for the biodiversity, marine food web, marine litter and underwater noise descriptors. The Mediterranean Sea is a miniature ocean ideal to test the response of marine ecosystems to amplified orbital and suborbital climate changes. Here we present coccolith data from a Sardinia Channel gravity core (Arcose C_33) analysed over the last 145,000 years, with a mean resolution of about 900 years. The study highlights that regional phytoplankton assemblages underwent significant modifications between the penultimate glacial and the last interglacial, as well as between the last glacial and the Holocene. The N ratio palaeoproductivity index suggests reduced productivity levels and the development of a deep nutricline during the last interglacial and the Holocene. Within the last glacial period, many taxa exhibit abundance fluctuations that parallel oscillations in delta O-18 values of Globigerina bulloides tests. Heinrich events and stadials seem to be associated with drops in primary productivity levels, as already observed in the Alboran Sea and the Sicily Channel. A total of 19 ecobioevents were identified in the Sardinia Channel sediments, including abundance fluctuations of Emiliania huxleyi >4 mu m, Florisphaera profunda and Gephyrocapsa oceanica. The comparison of events across the Mediterranean Sea suggests that traceability applies to the Sicily Channel, Balearic and Tyrrhenian Seas, supporting the adoption of a common ecobiostratigraphic scheme. Less certain is the correlation with the Alboran Sea, although peaks of Helicosphaera carteri and Syracosphaera histrica during Heinrich events and stadials suggest similar nutrient dynamics in response to suborbital climatic variations in the Sicily Channel, southern Tyrrhenian and Alboran Seas. A detailed integrated stratigraphic framework for the last 40 ka in the eastern Tyrrhenian Sea (central Mediterranean) was obtained through quantitative analyses of planktonic foraminifera assemblages, tephrostratigraphical studies and δ18O measurements on the basinal CET1 cored succession. Relative abundance fluctuations in the planktonic foraminifera assemblages allowed the identification of nine known eco-biozones and several bioevents recognized in the Tyrrhenian area and that are useful for correlations between Mediterranean marine records. Compositional changes in the planktonic foraminifera assemblages together with variations in the oxygen isotope record allowed us to detect the major climatic global fluctuations and some of the minor events that occurred during the investigated time interval. A total of 12 visible tephra layers and cryptotephras have been recognized and correlated with their volcanic sources and/or with known explosive events of Campanian and Sicilian–Aeolian volcanoes. A stratigraphic relationship between foraminiferal and climatic events and tephra layers has been highlighted. For the first time ecostratigraphic and tephrostratigraphic methods were combined to obtain a detailed integrated stratigraphy for the last 40 ka in the Tyrrhenian area. The achieved stratigraphic framework provides a useful stratigraphic reference record for the investigated area.

Here we present a high-resolution faunal, floral and geochemical (stable isotopes and trace elements) record from the sediments of Ocean Drilling Program Site 963 (central Mediterranean basin), which shows centennial/millennial-scale resemblance to the high-northern latitude rapid temperature fluctuations documented in the Greenland ice cores between 20 and 70 kyr BP. Oxygen and carbon isotopes, planktic foraminifera and calcareous nannofossil distributions suggest that Dansgaard–Oeschger (D/O) and Heinrich events (HE) are distinctly expressed in the Mediterranean climate record. Moreover, recurrent though subdued oscillations not previously identified in the Lateglacial Mediterranean sediments document a significant centennial-scale climate variability in the basin that is greater than previously thought. Alternations between climate regimes dominated by polar outbreaks during D/O stadials and warm D/O interstadials, with associated intensification of continental runoff, are well expressed in the ODP Site 963. These place the Mediterranean basin as an often overlooked recorder of the interplay between large- and regional- scale climate controls at intermediate latitudes, and of the possible interactions between different components of the climate system. Significant changes in Ba/Ca values measured in Globigerinoides ruber shells from a number of D/O stadials and interstadials suggest enhanced freshwater input from the north-eastern Mediterranean borderland during the D/O interstadials. However, the short duration of 3D stratification events never led to complete oxygen consumption along the water column, but clear effects of sluggish 3D circulation in the basin are testified to by negative excursions in δ13C measured in selected species of planktic and benthic foraminifera. HEs are constantly associated with lightening in the δ18O record of planktic foraminifera, possibly because of the impact of iceberg melting in the Iberian Margin on Mediterranean thermohaline circulation. Interestingly, in two cases in particular, HE2 and HE5, fresher water inputs also affected deeper horizons of intermediate waters, suggesting a basin-wide impact.

New centennial-scale data of benthic foraminifera assemblages and of stable isotopes of foraminifera shells from the Sicily Channel, representative of surface and bottom waters, over the interval between about 140 and 110 kyr BP, are presented. During this period anoxia developed on the eastern Mediterranean basin and sapropel S5 deposited. Although anoxic sediments have not been deposited in the Sicily Channel, this area is strategic to study the character of intermediate waters, whose chemical-physical properties strongly precondition the eastern Mediterranean deep water formation. So far, no data from these water masses have been obtained, apart from the isotopic composition of shells of the planktonic foraminifera species Neogloboquadrina pachyderma which lives at about 200. m depth, thus quite far from the intermediate water core. We conclude that, although with a reduced rate, the flowing of intermediate waters coming from the eastern basin, together with the surface water masses with a clear western affinity, implies the maintenance of an anti-estuarine circulation pattern across the Sicily Channel and in the Mediterranean Sea, also during one of the most severe episodes of anoxia of the Late Pleistocene. © 2011 Elsevier B.V.

The Little Ice Age (LIA) is the last episode of a series of Holocene climatic anomalies. There is still little knowledge on the response of the marine environment to the pronounced cooling of the LIA and to the transition towards the 20th century global warming. Here we present decadal-scale coccolithophore data from four short cores recovered from the central Mediterranean Sea (northern Sicily Channel and Tyrrhenian Sea), which on the basis of 210Pb activity span the last 200–350 years. The lowermost part of the record of one of the cores from the Sicily Channel, Station 407, which extends down to 1650 AD, is characterized by drastic changes in productivity. Specifically, below 1850 AD, the decrease in abundance of F. profunda and the increase of placoliths, suggest increased productivity. The chronology of this change is related to the main phase of the Little Ice Age, which might have impacted the hydrography of the southern coast of Sicily and promoted vertical mixing in the water column. The comparison with climatic forcings points out the importance of stronger and prolonged northerly winds, together with decreased solar irradiance.

International audience; Stable isotopes (δC and δN) were used to examine the origin of organic matter for the most representative demersal species of the SW Icelandic fishery, accounting for over 70% of landings of those species in the North Atlantic. Samples were collected during a 2-week period in early September 2004 from landings and directly during fishing cruises. Stable isotopes showed that particulate organic matter and sedimentary organic matter were at the base of the food web and appeared to fill two different compartments: the pelagic and the benthic. The pelagic realm was composed of only capelin and sandeel; krill and redfish occupied an intermediate position between pelagic and benthic realms; while anglerfish, haddock, cod and ling resulted as the true demersal species while tusk, rays and plaice were strongly linked to the benthic habitat.

The transfer of peat organic matter (OM) from tidal pools of upper littoral to downstream rocky shores and its potential incorporation into marine biota were investigated using the stable isotope approach. Samplings were carried out in September 2004 in two SW Icelandic sites (Osar and Hvassahraun), where we selected (1) areas with shores where grass gently declined towards rocks and, on reaching the sea line, formed small tidal peat pools and (2) areas where grass and rocky shores were not contiguous, rather the grass lower limits were several hundreds of meters back from the shore. In both grass and no grass areas, in the intertidal zone, all benthic organisms and all potential OM sources were sampled. Dominant macroalgae were Ascophyllum nodosum ([Linnaeus] Le Jolis) and Fucus vesiculosus Linnaeus. In grass sites, organisms partially reflected the isotopic composition of peat OM, while in no grass sites, peat represented only a negligible amount of available OM, or its signal was totally absent from the environment. Intertidal organisms could rely on peat both directly by suspension feeding, grazing or scavenging and indirectly by predation (crabs) on low level consumers (barnacles).

Stable isotopes were used to examine the origin of organic matter in Icelandic Ascophyllum-based habitats, the role of different organic matters in filling intertidal food webs and the food preferences of the most abundant suspension feeders, grazers and predators. We selected three intertidal sites on the SW coast of Iceland where we sampled in early September 2004, organic matter sources (POM, SOM and most abundant primary producers, A. nodosum and F. vesciculosus) and the most abundant macrofauna species (barnacles, mussels, gastropods, sponge and crabs). Even though the primary production (Ascophyllum-based) was the same at the three study sites, the isotopic composition of common-among-sites organisms varied due to local differences in the origin of available POM and SOM and in food web structures.

A multidisciplinary study was carried out on core C106 collected in the Salerno Gulf (southern Tyrrhenian Sea). Two tephra layers recovered in the core, N 18 O record of Globigerinoides ruber and Globigerina bulloides and seven 14 C calibrated ages provided the stratigraphic framework. The core sediments cover the last 28 kyr BP. Seismostratigraphic analysis of a high resolution acoustic profile, integrated by the dated core samples, allowed us to reconstruct the architecture and age of sedimentary bodies on the continental shelf. An integrated study based on different taxonomic groups (nannofossils, pteropods, foraminifera, and palynomorphs) provided palaeoclimatic trends, in agreement with changes in the isotopic composition of oxygen. The upper part of the Last Glacial period, the deglaciation phase and the Holocene were identified. Correlation between marine and continental records of palaeoenvironmental changes confirms a similar reconstruction of the last deglaciation as in the central and southern Mediterranean Sea. The Late Pleistocene^Holocene boundary was recognised at about 11.7 kyr BP. Between about 9.5 and 6 kyr BPand at 3.3 kyr BPsome warmer episodes were recorded. The measured lower isotopic values, together with some features of the fossil assemblages recorded from 9.5 to 6 kyr BP, may be related to the oceanographic setting that led to the deposition of Sapropel S1 in the Mediterranean basin. ; 2002 Elsevier Science B.V.
