Temperature dependency of consumer–resource interactions is fundamentally important for understanding and predicting the responses of food webs to climate change. Previous studies have shown temperature‐driven shifts in herbivore consumption rates and resource preference, but these effects remain poorly understood for predatory arthropods. Here, we investigate how predator killing rates, prey mass consumption, and macronutrient intake respond to increased temperatures using a laboratory and a field reciprocal transplant experiment. Ectothermic predators, wolf spiders (Pardosa sp.), in the lab experiment, were exposed to increased temperatures and different prey macronutrient content (high lipid/low protein and low lipid/high protein) to assess changes in their killing rates and nutritional demands. Additionally, we investigate prey mass and lipid consumption by spiders under contrasting temperatures, along an elevation gradient. We used a field reciprocal transplant experiment between low (420 masl; 26°C) and high (2,100 masl; 15°C) elevations in the Ecuadorian Andes, using wild populations of two common orb‐weaver spider species (Leucauge sp. and Cyclosa sp.) present along the elevation gradient. We found that killing rates of wolf spiders increased with warmer temperatures but were not significantly affected by prey macronutrient content, although spiders consumed significantly more lipids from lipid‐rich prey. The field reciprocal transplant experiment showed no consistent predator responses to changes in temperature along the elevational gradient. Transplanting Cyclosa sp. spiders to low‐ or high‐elevation sites did not affect their prey mass or lipid consumption rate, whereas Leucauge sp. individuals increased prey mass consumption when transplanted from the high to the low warm elevation. Our findings show that increases in temperature intensify predator killing rates, prey consumption, and lipid intake, but the responses to temperature vary between species, which may be a result of species‐specific differences in their hunting behavior and sensitivity to temperature., An important issue in ecological theory is to understand how increased temperatures will affect trophic interactions and food web dynamics. Our study provides an important step towards understanding the consequences of rising temperatures and changes in prey macronutrient content on predator killing rates and prey macronutrient consumption.

Metabolic scaling, whereby larger individuals use less energy per unit mass than smaller ones, may apply to the combined metabolic rate of group-living organisms as group size increases. Spiders that form groups in high disturbance environments can serve to test the hypothesis that economies of scale benefit social groups. Using solitary and group-living spiders, we tested the hypothesis that spiders exhibit negative allometry between body or colony mass and the standing mass of their webs and whether, and how, such a relationship may contribute to group-living benefits in a cooperative spider. Given the diverse architecture of spider webs-orb, tangle and sheet-and-tangle, and associated differences in silk content, we first assessed how standing web mass scales with spider mass as a function of web architecture and whether investment in silk differs among web types. As group-living spiders are predominantly found in clades that build the presumably costlier sheet-and-tangle webs, we then asked whether cost-sharing through cooperative web maintenance contributes to a positive energy budget in a social species. We found that larger spiders had a relatively smaller investment in silk per unit mass than smaller ones, but more complex sheet-and-tangle webs contained orders of magnitude more silk than simpler orb or tangle ones. In the group-living species, standing web mass per unit spider mass continued to decline as colony size increased with a similar slope as for unitary spiders. When web maintenance activities were considered, colonies also experienced reduced mass-specific energy expenditure with increasing colony size. Activity savings contributed to a net positive energy balance for medium and large colonies after inputs from the cooperative capture of large prey were accounted for. Economies of scale have been previously demonstrated in animal societies characterized by reproductive and worker castes, but not in relatively egalitarian societies as those of social spiders. Our findings illustrate the universality of scaling laws and how economies of scale may transcend hunting strategies and levels of organization.

Evaluating the magnitude and direction of biases affecting the ecological information captured by death assemblages is an important prerequisite for understanding past, present, and future community-environment relationships. Here, we establish the ecological fidelity and spatiotemporal resolution of an overlooked source of fossil remains: the soil arthropod assemblages found in rodent middens (that span from the present to >44,420 cal yr BP) collected in the central Atacama Desert of northern Chile. We evaluated the “live-dead agreement” across four sources of soil arthropod data; two contemporary surveys of live communities (i.e., live), and two sources of death assemblages (i.e., dead). Although live-dead agreements and diversity indices are highly variable among samples (live and dead assemblages), our results consistently demonstrate that an average fossil midden (i) better captures the structure and composition of living communities than species richness per se; (ii) offers a spatially-resolved picture of those communities at local scales; and (iii) is only weakly affected by time-averaging. The fine spatiotemporal resolution of fossil midden records in the Atacama, and most likely other areas of the world where rodent middens occur offers ecological information on the structure and composition of fossil arthropod assemblages potentially over many thousands of years. This information is reliable enough to establish historical baselines before past and ongoing anthropogenic impacts.

Recently, the Carlos Anwandter Nature Sanctuary (Sanctuary) at the Cruces River, Chile, has undergone important ecosystem changes. Brazilian waterweed (Egeria densa), the main food resource of Black-necked Swans (Cygnus melancoryphus), has greatly decreased in abundance. This disappearance may have affected the abundance of Black-necked Swans within the Sanctuary; however, the variation in the Black-necked Swan population is still poorly understood. Spatiotemporal variation in population abundance and feeding/breeding ecology of Black-necked Swans was analyzed in the Sanctuary and adjacent wetlands (non-protected areas outside the Sanctuary) from 2000 to 2010. Temporal fluctuations in Black-necked Swan abundance were recorded, with increases in population size from late December to early June and decreases from late June to late September. Phytotelmata in tank-forming Bromeliaceae plants are regarded as potential miniature models for aquatic ecology, but detailed investigations of their microbial communities are rare. Hence, the biogeochemistry in bromeliad tanks remains poorly understood. Here we investigate the structure of bacterial and archaeal communities inhabiting the detritus within the tanks of two bromeliad species, Aechmea nudicaulis and Neoregelia cruenta, from a Brazilian sand dune forest. We used metagenomic sequencing for functional community profiling and 16S sequencing for taxonomic profiling. We estimated the correlation between functional groups and various environmental variables, and compared communities between bromeliad species. In all bromeliads, microbial communities spanned a metabolic network adapted to oxygen-limited conditions, including all denitrification steps, ammonification, sulfate respiration, methanogenesis, reductive acetogenesis and anoxygenic phototrophy. Overall, reducers dominated in abundance over sulfate reducers, and anoxygenic phototrophs largely outnumbered oxygenic photoautotrophs. Functional community structure correlated strongly with environmental variables, between and within a single bromeliad species. Methanogens and reductive acetogens correlated with detrital volume and canopy coverage, and exhibited higher relative abundances in N. cruenta. A comparison of bromeliads to freshwater lake sediments and soil from around the world, revealed stark differences in terms of taxonomic as well as functional microbial community structure. Ecological processes that determine the abundance of species within ecological communities vary across space and time. These scale-dependent processes are especially important when they affect key members of a community, such as ecosystem engineers that create shelter and food resources for other species. Yet, few studies have examined the suite of processes that shape the abundance of ecosystem engineers. Here, we evaluated the relative influence of temporal variation, local processes, and latitude on the abundance of an engineering insect—a rosette-galling midge, Rhopalomyia solidaginis (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae). Over a period of 3–5 years, we studied the density and size of galls across a suite of local experiments that manipulated genetic variation, soil nutrient availability, and the removal of other insects from the host plant, Solidago altissima (tall goldenrod). We also surveyed gall density within a single growing season across a 2,300 km latitudinal transect of goldenrod populations in the eastern United States. At the local scale, we found that host-plant genotypic variation was the best predictor of rosette gall density and size within a single year. We found that the removal of other insect herbivores resulted in an increase in gall density and size. The amendment of soil nutrients for four years had no effect on gall density, but galls were smaller in carbon-added plots compared to control and nitrogen additions. Finally, we observed that gall density varied several fold across years. At the biogeographic scale, we observed that the density of rosette gallers peaked at mid-latitudes. Using meta-analytic approaches, we found that the effect size of time, followed by host-plant genetic variation and latitude were the best predictors of gall density. Taken together, our study provides a unique comparison of multiple factors across different spatial and temporal scales that govern engineering insect herbivore density.

[1] Extensive dune fields made up exclusively of the bromeliad Tillandsia landbeckii thrive in the Atacama Desert, one of the most extreme landscapes on earth. These plants survive by adapting exclusively to take in abundant advective fog and dew as moisture sources. Although some information has been gathered regarding their modern distribution and adaptations, very little is known about how these dune systems actually form and accumulate over time. We present evidence based on 20 radiocarbon dates for the establishment age and development of five different such dune systems located along a ∼215 km transect in northern Chile. Using stratigraphy, geochronology and stable C and N isotopes, we (1) develop an establishment chronology of these ecosystems, (2) explain how the unique T. landbeckii dunes form, and (3) link changes in foliar δ15N values to moisture availability in buried fossil T. landbeckii layers. We conclude by pointing out the potential that these systems have for reconstructing past climate change along coastal northern Chile during the late Holocene.

Key processes such as trophic interactions and nutrient cycling are often influenced by the element content of organisms. Previous analyses have led to some preliminary understanding of the relative importance of evolutionary and ecological factors determining animal stoichiometry. However, to date, the patterns and underlying mechanisms of consumer stoichiometry at interspecific and intraspecific levels within natural ecosystems remain poorly investigated. Here, we examine the association between phylogeny, trophic level, body size, and ontogeny and the elemental composition of 22 arthropod as well as two lizard species from the coastal zone of the Atacama Desert in Chile. We found that, in general, whole-body P content was more variable than body N content both among and within species. Body P content showed a significant phylogenetic signal; however, phylogeny explained only 4% of the variation in body P content across arthropod species. We also found a significant association between trophic level and the element content of arthropods, with carnivores having 15% greater N and 70% greater P contents than herbivores. Elemental scaling relationships across species were only significant for body P content, and even the P content scaling relationship was not significant after controlling for phylogeny. P content did decrease significantly with body size within most arthropod species, which may reflect the size dependence of RNA content in invertebrates. In contrast, larger lizards had higher P contents and lower N:P ratios than smaller lizards, which may be explained by size-associated differences in bone and scale investments. Our results suggests that structural differences in material allocation, trophic level and phylogeny can all contribute to variation in the stoichiometry of desert consumers, and they indicate that the elemental composition of animals can be useful information for identifying broad-scale linkages between nutrient cycling and trophic interactions in terrestrial food webs.
