The consumption of anurans by subsistence hunters in the Brazilian Amazon is unrecorded. Given this scenario, the objective of this study is to present the first record of White-lipped Frog consumption by subsistence hunters in the Amazon region of Rondônia. The data were collected through interviews with two migrant hunters from the state of Espírito Santo, currently residing in the municipality of Itapuã do Oeste in Rondônia. The hunters used to consume white-lipped frog (possibly Leptodactylus latrans) in their state of origin, and after locating a similar species (Leptodactylus macrosternum) and confirming the possibility of consumption with the mother through WhatsApp, they started consuming the frog. This record demonstrates how certain habits related to the consumption of wild animals can be maintained in new locations and how instant messaging tools can collaborate with information exchange about game species. O registro do uso de anuros para autoconsumo alimentar na Amazônia brasileira é inexistente. Diante desse cenário, o objetivo desse estudo é apresentar o primeiro registro de uso alimentar de rã-manteiga na Amazônia rondoniense. Os dados foram levantados via entrevista com dois migrantes do estado do Espírito Santo, atualmente residentes no município de Itapuã do Oeste em Rondônia. Os entrevistados faziam o uso de uma rã-manteiga (possivelmente Leptodacylus latrans) em seu estado de origem, e após localizarem uma espécie similar (Leptodactylus macrosternum) e confirmarem a possibilidade de consumo com a mãe via WhatsApp, passaram a consumir a rã. Esse registro demonstra como certos costumes relacionados com o consumo de animais silvestres pode ser mantido em novas localidades e como as ferramentas de mensagens instantâneas podem colaborar com troca de informações sobre espécies de caça.

The present work analyzed landing events of commercial fishing boats carrying two species of large catfish in 11 fishing landing sites along the Madeira River, temporally and spatially characterizing the exploitation of these species before and after the closure of the Jirau and Santo Antônio hydroelectric dams. Our results show that the Madeira River dams may be negatively impacting the fishing production of Pinirampus pirinampu and Brachyplatystoma platynemum catfish, drastically reducing these species’ biomass as well as the incomes of regional fishers. If the irreversible loss of these species of Amazonian catfish is to be avoided, public policies and measures for the management and sustainable handling of this fishery resource must be urgently carried out.

The Amazon Basin is an unquestionable biodiversity hotspot, containing the highest freshwater biodiversity on earth and facing off a recent increase in anthropogenic threats. The current knowledge on the spatial distribution of the freshwater fish species is greatly deficient in this basin, preventing a comprehensive understanding of this hyper-diverse ecosystem as a whole. Filling this gap was the priority of a transnational collaborative project, i.e. the AmazonFish project - https://www.amazon-fish.com/. Relying on the outputs of this project, we provide the most complete fish species distribution records covering the whole Amazon drainage. The database, including 2,406 validated freshwater native fish species, 232,936 georeferenced records, results from an extensive survey of species distribution including 590 different sources (e.g. published articles, grey literature, online biodiversity databases and scientific collections from museums and universities worldwide) and field expeditions conducted during the project. International audience; Amazonian goliath catfishes are widespread in the Amazon Basin. Recently, otolith 87Sr:86Sr analyses using laser ablation–multi‐collector–inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA‐MC‐ICPMS) revealed a >8,000 km trans‐Amazonian natal homing in Brachyplatystoma rousseauxii among fish caught and hatched in the largest Amazon River tributary, the upper Madeira basin. Although also suspected for fish in the upper Amazon, homing could not be demonstrated owing to less distinct environmental 87Sr:86Sr gradients along the Amazon mainstem. Using scanning X‐ray fluorescence microscopy (SXFM), a separate study provided evidence that Se:Ca and Sr:Ca are useful markers for identifying migration into Andean headwaters and the estuarine environment. We analysed otoliths of known 87Sr:86Sr profiles using SXFM mapping to test if Sr:Ca and Se:Ca patterns could demonstrate natal homing for three fish caught in the upper Amazon, using as reference two individuals that were natal homers and two forced residents (hatched after the construction of hydroelectric dams on the Madeira River) from the upper Madeira River. As hypothesised, although the Sr isotope profiles of the upper Amazon individuals were uninformative, two of them presented similar alternating mirror patterns of Sr:Ca and Se:Ca to those of the upper Madeira natal homers, indicating migrations out of the Andean region and into the estuary area. Both were therefore natal homers from the upper Amazon. The third individual from the upper Amazon presented similar Sr:Ca and Se:Ca patterns to those of the upper Madeira residents, suggesting it was a natural resident from the upper Amazon. By combining the results of 87Sr:86Sr analyses (LA‐MC‐ICPMS) and Sr:Ca and Se:Ca mappings (SXFM) that are completely independent of one another, we demonstrated that B. rousseauxii also performs natal homing in the upper Amazon. Our results indicate that the life cycle of B. rousseauxii is more complex than previous literature hypothesised, with the existence of partial migration, even in absence of physical barriers. Quantifying the relative importance of these different life‐history strategies will have important implications for fisheries management. Our results also lay the groundwork for conservation efforts in the context of hydropower development in the Amazon Basin and set testable hypotheses of the potential impacts of the Madeira River dams.

This paper explores the effects of two run-of-river dams (Jirau and Santo Antônio) built in cascade in the middle Madeira River (Brazil) on the interruption of long-distance migration routes of the gilded catfish (Brachyplatystoma rousseauxii). A participative monitoring system was set up to compare capture by commercial fishers approximately 1500 km upstream of the dams in Bolivia, before (1998-2007) and after (2015-2017) dam closure. A significant decrease in gilded catfish catches and in catch per unit effort was observed after dam closure, whereas no significant difference in mean weight was found. Back-estimation of age suggests that the few individuals remaining after dam closure in 2009 are a mixture of old homers that returned upstream before dam closure, and residents hatched after dam closure and trapped in the upper Madeira. Unless fishways in the Madeira River dams improve their efficiency, the gilded catfish might become rare and in danger of regional extinction in the upper Madeira basin in the next few years, negatively affecting river fisheries., Este estudio explora el impacto de las represas en cascada Jirau y Santo Antônio en el curso medio del río Madeira (Brasil) sobre la interrupción de la ruta de migración del bagre dorado (Brachyplatystoma rousseauxii). Se estableció un sistema de monitoreo participativo para comparar la captura de dorado por pescadores comerciales en Bolivia, aproximadamente 1 500 km río arriba de las represas, antes (1998-2007) y después (2015-2017) de su cierre. Se observó una disminución significativa en las capturas y en la captura por unidad de esfuerzo de dorado después del cierre de ambas represas. No hubo diferencias significativas en el peso promedio antes y después del cierre. La estimación de la edad de los pocos individuos capturados arriba de las represas sugiere que se trata de una mezcla de individuos adultos que han podido pasar las represas antes de su cierre en 2009, y residentes nacidos después del cierre de las represas, atrapados en el alto Madeira. Si los sistemas de traspaso de peces implementados en las represas del rio Madeira no mejoran su eficiencia, el dorado podría volverse escaso y en peligro de extinción regional en la cuenca alta del Madeira en los próximos años, afectando negativamente la pesca de esta especie.

Species-specific disturbance calls of five commercially-important characiform species are described, the Curimatidae commonly called branquinhas: Potamorhina latior, Potamorhina altamazonica and Psectrogaster amazonica; Prochilodontidae: jaraquí Semaprochilodus insignis and curimatã Prochilodus nigricans. All species have a two-chambered swimbladder and the sonic mechanism, present exclusively in males, utilises hypertrophied red muscles between ribs that adhere to the anterior chamber. The number of muscles is unusually plastic across species and varies from 1 to 4 pairs suggesting considerable evolution in an otherwise conservative system. Advertisement calls are produced in river confluences in the Madeira Basin during the high-water mating season (January-February). Disturbance calls and sampling allowed recognition of underwater advertisement choruses from P. latior, S. insignis and P. nigricans. The advertisement calls of the first two species have largely similar characteristics and they mate in partially overlapping areas in the Guaporé River. However, P. latior sounds have a lower dominant frequency and it prefers to call from river confluences whereas S. insignis shoals occur mostly in the main river channel adjacent to the confluence. These results help identify and differentiate underwater sounds and evaluate breeding areas during the courtship of commercially important characids likely to be affected by two hydroelectric dams.

International audience; In the Amazon, migratory catfishes of the genus Brachyplatystoma are apex predators that are important for fisheries and conservation. The life cycle of Brachyplatystoma platynemum Boulenger, 1898 is poorly known, although it has been hypothesized to be very similar to that of Brachyplatystoma rousseauxii Castelnau, 1855, which uses the entire length of the Amazon basin to complete its life cycle (from the Andes to the estuary). This study provides the first data on the migratory patterns of B. platynemum at the individual level using otolith microchemistry. In total, 94 individuals were sampled close to major breeding areas in the Amazon basin (78 fish from the middle and upper Madeira River and 14 fish from the upper Amazon), and their lifetime movements were assessed by measuring variations in 87 Sr/ 86 Sr along transverse sections of their otoliths (ear stones), using laser ablation multi-collector mass spectrometry (LA-MC-ICP-MS). The migrations of B. platynemum are not as extensive as those of B. rousseauxii, and do not involve natal homing. Furthermore, the estuary is not a nursery area, at least for fish hatched in the Madeira. Nevertheless, B. platynemum migrates several thousand kilometres within the Amazon basin, with transboundary displacements between at least Bolivia, Brazil, and Peru. Current and planned hydroelectric development in the Amazon basin will severely disrupt both migration and access to breeding grounds, ultimately affecting the recruitment and population dynamics of these apex predators. The conservation of B. platynemum is crucial for the stability of the Amazonian aquatic food webs. This requires building effective fish passage on the two existing Madeira dams and considering alternative options to the large-scale hydropower development in the Amazon basin

Chalceus guaporensis is an endemic fish to the upper Madeira River whereas C. epakros is widespread in many rivers of the central and lower portions of the Amazon Basin, middle and upper Orinoco River Basin, the Essequibo River in Guyana and in the Nanay River in northern Peru. According to literature, both species do not occur in syntopy. We carried out ichthyological surveys along the Madeira River Basin and its rapids, and data on abundance, diet and habitat use were obtained for both species. Chalceus guaporensis and C. epakros are morphologically similar, occupying floodplain habitats and exploiting similar food resources. The former predominated upstream from the Jirau Fall, whereas the latter had most of its abundance bellow the last fall of the Madeira River; both species co-occurred along part of the rapids stretch and in the Machado River, but with strongly uneven abundances. This pattern may have developed in the past by speciation regarding the presence of the falls, while co-occurrence of the two species seems to be regulated by competitive interactions or maintained by slight differences in environmental requirements nowadays. The recent disruption of the Madeira River by two run-of-river dams built in cascade submerged a large portion of the rapids stretch and substituted it by semi-lenthic habitats created by the dam reservoirs, together with the construction of a fish passage. These environmental changes may allow the invasion of the upper reaches of the Madeira River by C. epakros, and disturb the population of endemic C. guaporensis. RESUMO Chalceus guaporensis é descrita como uma espécie endêmica do alto rio Madeira, enquanto C. epakros está amplamente distribuída em rios das porções central e inferior da bacia Amazônica, no médio e alto rio Orinoco, e nos rios Essequibo, na Guiana, e Nanay, no norte do Peru. A literatura não registra essas espécies como sintópicas. Expedições ictiológicas realizadas ao longo do rio Madeira e suas corredeiras nos deram a oportunidade de registrar a presença, abundância, habitat e dieta utilizadas por essas espécies. Chalceus guaporensis e C. epakros são muito similares morfologicamente, ocupam habitats inundáveis e apresentam espectro alimentar semelhante. A primeira espécie predominou a montante da cachoeira Jirau, enquanto que a segunda teve a maior parte de sua abundância registrada à jusante das cachoeiras do rio Madeira. Ambas espécies coocorreram ao longo de parte do trecho de corredeiras e no rio Machado, mas com abundâncias muito desiguais. Esse padrão pode ter se desenvolvido no passado, por especiação, em função da presença das corredeiras, enquanto a coocorrência das duas espécies parece ser regulada por interações competitivas ou mantida por diferenças sutis em requisitos ecológicos no tempo atual. O recente barramento do rio Madeira por duas hidrelétricas construídas em cascata submergiu uma grande porção do trecho de corredeiras e o substituiu por habitats semilênticos, criados pelos reservatórios das hidrelétricas a fio d’água, juntamente com a construção de uma passagem para peixes. Essas alterações ambientais podem permitir que C. epakros invada o trecho superior da bacia do rio Madeira, com possíveis impactos negativos sobre a população da espécie endêmica C. guaporensis.

Summary Length–weight relationships (LWRs) are presented for 112 freshwater fish species representing 23 families and five orders captured in the Madeira River, the largest white-water river tributary of the Amazon River. The allometry coefficient (b) of the LWR (Wt = aSLb) ranged from 2.446 to 3.856 with a median value of 3.102. Eight new LWR records are presented for Amazonian species as information for FishBase. LWRs in the present study provide historical data on a and b coefficients prior to the damming of the Madeira River in November 2011, allowing comparison estimates of predicted future population parameters as influenced by human intervention.

Monthly (April 2009 to May 2010) bottom-trawl sampling for Brachyplatystoma species along the rapids stretch of the Madeira River in Brazil revealed that Brachyplatystoma rousseauxii larvae and juveniles were present in low abundances in all areas and during all hydrological periods. The presence of larvae and juveniles throughout the hydrological cycle suggests asynchronous spawning in the headwaters of the Madeira River.

The middle stretch of the Madeira River has supported an intensive commercial fishery for several decades. Developed in an area of rapids and waterfalls, this fishery focuses primarily on catfish stocks, mainly pimelodids. Data from fish landings collected in the years immediately prior to the start in operations of two large hydroelectric dams were used to estimate growth and mortality rates for Pirinampus pirinampu (Spix & Agassiz) and Brachyplatystoma platynemum Boulenger. In addition, stock assessment was carried out for both species, and the results used to evaluate the status of the fishery. Mean population parameters were L∞ = 80.85 cm (total length), k = 0.52 year−1, ϕ = 3.53, A0.95 = 6 year, M = 0.87, F = 1.41–1.64 and Z = 2.28–2.51 for P. pirinampu; and L∞ = 95.55 cm (total length), k = 0.28 year−1, ϕ = 3.40, winter point = 0.41, A0.95 = 11 year, M = 0.55, F = 0.16–0.35 and Z = 0.71–0.90 for B. platynemum. Yield-per-recruit analysis indicated P. pirinampu was overfished and that the stock of B. platynemum was under-exploited. Moreover, overfishing of the P. pirinampu stock and the effects of fragmentation caused by the construction of the dam should be monitored.

International audience; Knowledge of fish migration is a prerequisite to sustainable fisheries management and preservation, especially in large international river basins. In particular, understanding whether a migratory lifestyle is compulsory or facultative, and whether adults home to their natal geographic area is paramount to fully appraise disruptions of longitudinal connectivity resulting from damming.In the Amazon, the large migratory catfishes of the Brachyplatystoma genus are apex predators of considerable interest for fisheries. They are believed to use the entire length of the basin to perform their life cycle, with hypothesized homing behaviours. Here, we tested these hypotheses, using the emblematic B. rousseauxii as a model species.We sampled adults close to major breeding areas in the Amazon basin (upper Madeira and upper Amazonas) and assessed their lifetime movements by measuring variations in 87Sr/86Sr along transverse sections of their otoliths (ear stones) using laser ablation multicollector mass spectrometry (LA-MC-ICPMS).We demonstrate that larvae migrate downstream from the Andean piedmont to the lower Amazon, where they grow over a protracted period before migrating upstream as adults. Contrary to prevailing inferences, not all fish spend their nursery stages in the Amazon estuary. By contrast, the passage in the lower or central Amazon seems an obligate part of the life cycle. We further evidence that most adults home to their natal geographic area within the Madeira sub-basin. Such long-distance natal homing is exceptional in purely freshwater fishes.Synthesis and applications. By using otolith microchemistry, we were able to demonstrate a seemingly compulsory basin-wide migratory life cycle of large Amazonian catfishes. This makes them the organisms performing the longest migrations (>8000 km) in fresh waters. This exceptional life history is already jeopardized by two dams recently built in the Madeira River, which block a major migration route and access to a substantial part of their spawning grounds. Major impacts can be anticipated from the current and forthcoming hydroelectric development in the Amazon basin, not only on the populations and fisheries of this apex predator, but also on Amazonian food webs through trophic cascades.

The central nervous system is a critical target for Hg toxicity in all living organisms. Total Hg (THg) was determined in brain and muscle samples of 165 specimens of eight species of catfish (Brachyplatystoma filamentosum; Brachyplatystoma platynemum; Brachyplatystoma rousseauxii; Brachyplatystoma vaillantii; Phractocephalus hemiliopterus; Pseudoplatystoma punctifer; Pseudoplatystoma tigrinum; Zungaro zungaro) from the Madeira River, Brazilian Amazon. Despite the narrow range of Fishbase trophic level (4.2-4.6) the median THg concentrations ranged from 0.39 to 1.99mg/kg and from 0.03 to 0.29mg/kg respectively in muscle and brain from the studied species. Overall, the median concentration for all samples analyzed was 0.93mg/kg and 0.16mg/kg respectively in muscle and brain; most samples (76%) showed muscle Hg concentrations0.5mg/kg. There were statistically significant THg differences between sex (femalemales). The correlation between THg concentrations in muscle and brain was statistically significant (r=0.9170; p0.0001). In the studied specimens, fish total length was significantly correlated with muscle (r=0.3163; p=0.0001) and brain (r=0.3039; p=0.0003) THg; however, fish age was negatively and significantly correlated (r=-0.2991; p=0.0012) with THg in muscle but not with THg in brain (r=-0.0190; p=0.8492). Amazonian catfish accumulate high levels of Hg in muscle and brain; however, brain-THg concentrations can be predicted from muscle-THg. Muscle-Hg in catfish can be a tool to detect brain-Hg concentrations associated with environmental Hg.

The fish collection of the Universidade Federal de Rondônia, recently established, contains about 41% of freshwater fish species known to occur in Brazil, and 24% of South America. The biological material is distributed into 1,067 species, 21,963 lots and 149,192 specimens, gathered during five years of work. From this collection, 99% of the lots have georeferenced location, and 94% of the species were sampled in the Madeira River basin, the largest tributary in flow, drainage area and sediment discharge of the Amazonas River basin. Among the 1,008 species collected in the Madeira River basin, 80% were reviewed by Brazilian, North American and French experts, and represents the highest richness among tributaries of the Amazonas River and other rivers worldwide. Fish collection from the Madeira River basin deposited in the ichthyological collection of the Universidade Federal de Rondônia accounts for about 75% of the lots and specimens of fish from that basin available for study in collections worldwide. We examined responses from shore fish assemblages and bottom channel fish assemblages before and after two cascade run-of-river dams in the Madeira River, in the Amazon. Those dams were installed in a river corridor where historical factors, represented by the presence of the Teotonio and Jirau falls, were the best predictors of the fish fauna assemblage composition. Jirau and Santo Antonio were the first dams constructed with Kaplan horizontal bulb turbines in the Amazon. These bulb turbines have the ability to operate by forming small reservoirs known as run-of-river, which should minimize impacts on fish assemblages. Overall, there were major short-term impacts in shore fish assemblages by increasing species richness, abundance and biomass in experimental catches. Shore fish assemblages dissimilarities before and after the dams’ closure were also noticed and were related to an increase in water temperature and dissolved oxygen. However, the historical factor represented by Teotonio Fall is still the best predictor of fish assemblage dissimilarities, combined with effects of dams’ closure. Bottom channel fish assemblage dissimilarities can be explained only by dams closure and are related especially to changes in fish species abundance inside the reservoirs. Our study revealed an increase in native opportunistic fish species and changes in fish assemblage structure at local scale. Kaplan horizontal bulb turbines employed in run-of-river dams seem to be less deleterious than vertical axis turbines typically used in accumulation reservoirs, and should be preferred in the face of burgeoning new hydroelectricity development plans for rivers across the Amazon basin.

This study presents an inventory of the ichthyofauna of Cuniã Lake, situated in the floodplain of the Madeira River in Rondônia State, Brazil. A total of 11,949 specimens representing eight orders, 34 families, and 189 species were sampled with gill, seine, and hand nets during the dry and wet seasons between 2008 and 2012. Most of the species recorded in Cuniã Lake are commonly found in other locations in the central Amazonian floodplains, although some are rare in collections (e.g. Acestrorhynchus minimus, Triportheus culter, Oxybrycon parvulus, Tyttocharax madeirae, Trachycorystes trachycorystes and Scorpiodoras lyophisus) or represent new distributional records.

Este estudo caracteriza quali e quantitativamente a atividade pesqueira comercial na bacia do rio Madeira, afluente do rio Amazonas, no trecho entre Guajará-Mirim e Porto Velho, estado de Rondônia. No período de janeiro a dezembro/2004, foram registrados 460 t, correspondendo 935 viagens. A análise dos dados oriundos do monitoramento dos desembarques demonstrou que a pesca na região tem caráter artesanal de pequena escala, destacando a maior participação das canoas motorizadas (131 unidades) do que barcos pesqueiros (45 unidades; capacidade média: 3.000kg) na frota pesqueira. Os peixes migradores jaraqui (Semaprochilodus spp.), dourada (Brachyplatystoma rousseauxii), sardinha (Triportheus spp.), jatuarana/matrinxã (Brycon amazonicus e B. cephalus), curimatã (Prochilodus nigricans) e filhote (Brachyplatystoma filamentosum) se destacaram na composição das espécies desembarcadas. As informações técnicas geradas são importantes para subsidiar ações de ordenamento pesqueiro, bem como para avaliar futuras variações que possam ocorrer na atividade frente aos impactos dos empreendimentos hidrelétricos em construção na região. This study presents qualitative and quantitative information about commercial fishery in the basin of the Madeira River, tributary of the Amazon River, describing the fishing activity in the segment between Guajará-Mirim and Porto Velho, in Rondônia State. From January to December/2004, 219 fishermen and 935 trips were registered, corresponding to the capture of 460 t of fish. Data from fish landings demonstrate that fisheries in the region are small-scaled and point to a higher participation of small motorized canoes (130 units) than of fishing boats (45 units; average capacity: 3000 kg) in the fishing fleet. Migratory species like jaraqui (Semaprochilodus spp.), dourada (Brachyplatystoma rousseauxii), sardinha (Triportheus spp.), jatuarana/matrinxã (Brycon amazonicus e B. cephalus), curimatã (Prochilodus nigricans) and filhote (Brachyplatystoma filamentosum) were the most important in terms of landings. The technical information produced are very important in order to subsidize fishery management, as well as to assess future variations that might happen due to the hydro-electric enterprises under construction in the region.

Ethnoichthyological contribution to the offi cial fi sheries document concerning fi sheries closure of some commercial fi sh categories in the western Brazilian Amazon, Guaporé River, Rondônia, Brazil. There are conflicts among fishermen and local environmental protection agencies that regulate fishing in thearea, concerning the official closure periods of the fisheries. The fishermen affirm that the dates established forprotection of spawning do not correspond to the spawning season of the primary commercialized species, and that this could be hindering the local fish markets. This report compares the traditional ecological knowledge(TEK) with information obtained from experimental fishery and scientific data covering the reproduction periods of the primary categories of fish market in the region. Of the 28 fish categories analyzed, 14 (50%) were captured in experimental fishing and were evaluated. The TEK confirmed the experimental information for 10 categories of fish (72%). The results suggest the necessity of adjusting the official protection dates stipulated for the following fish categories: caparari (Pseudoplatystoma tigrinun), Sorubim (P. fasciatum), tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum), pescada (Plagioscion squamosissimus) and tucunaré (Cichla ocellaris). The discussion deals with a possibly inadequate period of protection based on the information obtained from different basins applied to larger and more diverse areas of the Brazilian Amazon Rainforest. This study confirms the refi ned biological knowledge that the fishermen have of the species they exploit and suggests that the traditional ecological knowledge can be useful to adjust political issues dealing with the regional protection agency of fishing. Conflitos pesqueiros têm sido observados na região do Guaporé entre pescadores e órgãos gestores quanto ao período oficial de defeso reprodutivo. Os pescadores afirmam que o defeso não corresponde à época de reprodução das principais espécies comercializadas, o que pode estar prejudicando os estoques locais de peixes. Este trabalho comparou o conhecimento ecológico tradicional (CET) com informações obtidas em pescarias experimentais e informação obtida da literatura científica sobre os períodos de reprodução das principais categorias de pescado desembarcadas naquela região. Das 28 categorias de pescado analisadas, 14 (50%) foram capturadas na pesca experimental e puderam ser avaliadas. O conhecimento ecológico tradicional confirmou a informação experimental para 10 categorias de pescado (72%). Os resultados sugerem a necessidade de ajustes no período oficial de defeso para as categorias: caparari (Pseudoplatystoma tigrinun), surubim (P. fasciatum), tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum), pescada (Plagioscion spp) e tucunaré (Cichla spp). A discussão aborda a possível inadequação do período de defeso estabelecido com bases em informações geradas em diferentes bacias e aplicados para grandes áreas da Amazônia brasileira. Este estudo confi rma o refinado conhecimento do pescador sobre a biologia das espécies que ele explora e sugere que este CET pode ser utilizado para ajustar políticas de gestão pesqueira regionalmente.

Belmont Stream is the main tributary of the Madeira River in the area immediately downriver from the Santo Antonio Fall. Samplings were carried out using gill nets in the mouth of this stream between May 2005 and April 2006 and resulted in a list of 74 species. The analyses included values of composition, constancy of occurrence, species richness, abundance, Catch Per Unit of Effort and trophic structure about the ten most abundant species. Characiformes and Siluriformes were dominant order in the samples and Curimatidae (popularly known as "branquinhas") was the most abundant family, represented by Psectrogaster rutiloides (32.57% of the collected specimens), Potamorhina altamazonica (10.72%), and Potamorhina latior (7.79%). The most of species were considered accessory and accidental and richness suggests high values in the rising and high water. Belmont maybe considered as a moderate richness when compared to those found for others Amazon rivers. Detritivorous fishes composed 60% of the assemblage and the constancy of the most abundant species of this family suggests Belmont as an important area to these migratory fishes. O igarapé Belmont localiza-se a cerca de 30 km de Porto Velho e é o principal afluente do rio Madeira na área imediatamente a jusante da cachoeira de Santo Antonio. No período compreendido entre maio de 2005 a abril de 2006, dez coletas realizadas na foz deste igarapé geraram uma lista com 74 espécies coletadas por malhadeiras. As análises incluem características físico-químicas do igarapé estudado, valores de riqueza, composição, constância, estrutura trófica da assembléia de peixes e valores de CPUE. O predomínio das ordens Characiformes e Siluriformes confirma o esperado para a Amazônia. A família Curimatidae foi a mais abundante, representada por Psectrogaster rutiloides (32,57%), Potamorhina altamazonica (10,72%) e Potamorhina latior (7,79%), popularmente conhecidas como branquinhas. A riqueza e constância de algumas espécies sugerem um papel especial da área no que diz respeito à transposição das corredeiras pelas espécies. Conclui-se que a estrutura e a composição da ictiofauna na área estudada do igarapé Belmont é marcada por espécies migradoras detritívoras, possivelmente em função do papel do rio Madeira nas rotas migratórias.

This work tests freezing procedures of tambaqui, Colossoma macropomum, and efficiency in egg fertilizing. Sperm of a hormonally induced reproducer was collected and stored in assay pipes. The material was diluted in cryoprotectant solutions (dimetilacetamida [DMA], dimetilsulfoxido [DMSO], metanol, propilenoglicol e etilenoglicol) (1:3 ratio: sperm:diluting), and subjected to routine freezing procedures. The motility was evaluated before and after this procedure. Fertilization tests were made with cryopreserved sperm. The motility was evaluated before and after these tests. The pre-freezing motility was 80%, and after freezing, it was 20-25% for propilenoglicol and etilenoglicol, 5-10% for DMSO and 5% for DMA and methanol. The fertilization was 76% and 88% for propilenoglicol and etilenoglicol, respectively.
