Environmental conditions have a strong influence on sea turtle population dynamics. Sea turtles spend most of their lives in foraging areas; however, there is a lack of information on how oceanographic and biological parameters determine habitat use and density. Here, we estimated density of green turtles Chelonia mydas and hawksbill turtles Eretmochelys imbricata in a South Atlantic foraging area (Arraial do Cabo, Brazil). We also investigated the influence of environmental variables (wind fetch, temperature, depth, and visibility) and benthic composition on the distribution of turtles. Surveyed sites were split between a colder, more wave-exposed location (western), and a warmer, more sheltered location (eastern). To ensure that these mobile and sparsely distributed species were adequately surveyed, underwater visual censuses (timed transects) were conducted. Sea turtle densities were significantly different between warm/sheltered and cold/wave-exposed locations. C. mydas were almost 10 times more frequently sighted than E. imbricata. The local distribution of E. imbricata mirrored large-scale latitudinal patterns, where this tropical species is dominant on warmer reefs (similar to habitat conditions found at the eastern location). It was not possible to assess the environmental influence on E. imbricata sightings due to their low density. C. mydas were frequently sighted in the cold/exposed sites and negatively correlated with depth. Overall, the density of E. imbricata and C. mydas suggests that Arraial do Cabo is an important feeding ground in the western Atlantic Ocean. This study highlights that visual census can produce reliable density estimates of sea turtles in foraging areas.

Introduction: Although olive ridley sea turtles (Lepidochelys olivacea) are the most abundant sea turtles in the world, quantitative information is scarce and unevenly distributed among regions. There are many management and conservation programs for this species, and assessments are necessary to identify nesting trends and effectively manage current conservation programs. PROTORMAR-UAS is a Research and Conservation program for the olive ridley turtle created by the Autonomous University of Sinaloa, Mexico. The program utilizes two biological stations: Santuario Playa Ceuta (SPC) and Playa Caimanero (PC). Objective: To evaluate the nesting trend of olive ridley turtles on two beaches in Northwestern Mexico and to predict prospective nesting trends for the next 30 years. Methods: Using annual nesting data collected over 40 years at SPC (1976-2016) and 30 years at PC (1986-2016), we evaluated nesting trends, hatching success, predation and poaching of olive ridley turtles on the two beaches in Northwestern Mexico. Then, prospective nesting estimates for the next 30 years were calculated predictive time series model. Results: A positive and significant correlation was identified between the number of annual nests and time for both beaches (rho = 0.850, P ≤ 0.01 for SPC; rho = 0.677, P ≤ 0.01 for PC); the average hatching success rates were 65.09 at SPC and 60.72 % at PC. The predictive time-series model indicated that the numbers of nests will continue to increase through 2045, increasing three-fold at SPC and six-fold at PC with respect to the last year of monitoring. Conclusions: There was a clear positive trend in the number of olive ridley sea turtle nests at both sites, which is consistent with trends found in other recent studies from the region. Therefore, we suggest that PC be designated a legally protected nesting area since it is located within the latitudinal limits of olive ridley nesting and given the need for resources for camp operation considering increased nesting and current problems with predation and poaching. Because in Mexico operating a nesting beach without any protection status implies not having a budget for its management. Existen muchos programas de manejo y conservación para esta especie, y sus evaluaciones son necesarias para identificar tendencias de anidación y poder manejar de manera efectiva los programas de conservación actuales. PROTORMAR-UAS es un programa de Investigación y Conservación de la tortuga golfina creado por la Universidad Autónoma de Sinaloa, México. El Programa cuenta con dos estaciones biológicas: Santuario de Playa Ceuta (SPC) y Playa Caimanero (PC). Objetivo:Evaluar la tendencia de anidación de la tortuga golfina en dos playas del noroeste de México y predecir las tendencias prospectivas de anidación para los próximos 30 años. Resultados:Se identificó una correlación positiva y significativa entre el registro anual de nidos y el tiempo de estudio para ambas playas (rho = 0.850, P ≤ 0.01 para SPC; rho = 0.677 y P ≤ 0.01 para PC); así como el éxito de eclosión promedio de 65.09 para SPC y de 60.72 % para PC. El modelo predictivo de series de tiempo indicó que las anidaciones continuarán aumentando para el 2045, tres veces para SPC y seis para PC, con respecto al último año de monitoreo. Conclusiones:Hay una clara tendencia positiva de anidación de la tortuga golfina en ambos sitios, lo cual es consistente con la tendencia observada en otros estudios recientes de la región. Por lo tanto, sugerimos incluir a PC como un área de anidación legalmente protegida, la cual se ubica en los límites latitudinales de anidación de la tortuga golfina, dada la necesidad de contar con recursos disponibles para la operación del campamento ante el aumento de anidaciones y de problemas de depredación y saqueo. Es necesario determinar por qué en México opera una playa de anidación sin ningún estatus de protección y por ende sin presupuesto para su manejo. &nbsp

A juvenile green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) of undetermined sex was rescued on October 16, 2019, in the archipelago of Fernando de Noronha, Pernambuco, Brazil. The animal was presence of active bleeding resulting from two transverse fractures in the carapace, with exposure of the coelomic cavity. Radiological and hematological tests were performed. The animal received therapeutic support and surgical reconstruction of the carapace. The animal was medically cleared and reintroduced into the natural environment 120 days after it was rescued. The protocol used here for both the rehabilitation and the surgical procedure was concluded to be effective.

Ants have been suggested as one of many population pressures sea turtles face potentially affecting nesting-beach survival of eggs and hatchlings. However, little is known about the extent to which ants act as incidental or primary mortality factors. Most research has focused on New World fire ants (genus Solenopsis), with confirmed records of other ant species interactions with sea turtle nests in situ being rare. Our study documented the ant species associated with loggerhead sea turtle Caretta caretta (Linnaeus) (Testudines: Cheloniidae) nests in Georgia and determined if ant presence was linked to lower hatching or emergence success. Samples (n = 116) collected from sea turtle nests on eight islands contained 14 ant species including Solenopsis invicta Buren (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), the red imported fire ant, which was the most common ant species encountered. Ant presence was not correlated with lower hatching success, but when other known disturbances were removed, correlated with significantly lower nest emergence success (P < 0.0001). Logistic modeling suggests that proximity of sea turtle nests to the primary dune significantly increases risk of ant predation on hatchling sea turtles. Population managers can reduce this risk by maintaining a 1-m buffer shoreward between dune vegetation and relocated sea turtle nests. Our results suggest that ants may exert a density-dependent pressure on nesting sea turtle populations and call for additional investigations to determine if managing native and invasive ants augments other efforts to improve hatchling survival.

A rare live record of the loggerhead sea turtle Caretta caretta (Linnaeus, 1758) is reported from the Dzharylgach Gulf in the north-western Black Sea. This is the first record from Ukrainian waters since 1962 and the northernmost record of the species in the Black Sea. The loggerhead sea turtles of the east Mediterranean origin are increasingly often seen in the Marmara and the Black Sea during the latest decade, which is an evidence for potential expansion of this species range, at least partly due to climate changes. To conserve national biodiversity, enlisting and detailed morphological description of unrecorded species is critical. Here, we, for the first time in Korea, report and describe detailed morphological characteristics of two juvenile hawksbill turtles, Eretmochelys imbricata, captured from Seongsan-eup, Seogwipo-si, Jeju-do and Geumnam-myeon, Hadong-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do, South Korea on 4 August 2016 and 19 December 2016, respectively. Both specimens had a narrow head, pointed beak, four pairs of costal scutes, and four pairs of poreless inframarginal scutes, which are typical morphological characteristics of E. imbricata. Phylogenetic analysis of mtDNA control region sequences of a specimen confirmed again that the specimens are E. imbricata. With this addition of E. imbricata ( Mae-bu-ri-ba-da-geo-buk in Korean), four species of sea turtles have now been reported from Korean waters.

Fragmented skeletal remains of marine turtles occur frequently in archaeological and natural deposits on tropical and subtropical coasts. Identifying these remains to species based on their differential osteomorphology is vital to address questions pertaining to the historical ecology, archaeology, and conservation of marine turtles globally. Although the species‐specific features of extant marine turtle skulls and carapax are relatively well known, the comparative osteomorphology and osteometry of postcranial endoskeletons in closely related species of marine turtles remains unstudied. In this paper, we provide verbal descriptions, line drawings, and photographs of diagnostic morphological criteria for the coracoideum, the humerus, and the femur of two closely related species of Cheloniidae: Chelonia mydas (green turtle) and Caretta caretta (loggerhead), based on observations on modern skeletons. We also present osteometric indices of the humerus and the femur that can be used to distinguish between both species. We comment on the applicability of these criteria on archaeological marine turtle assemblages from the Mediterranean.

Sea turtles (Cheloniidae) offer a suitable substrate for the settlement of various epibiont organisms. The structure of the epifauna communities associated with sea turtles provides information on the movement and habitats most frequented by Cheloniidae. Thanks to the collaboration with the Sea Turtle Recovery Centers (STRC) of Policoro (MT) and Molfetta (BA), the communities of epibionts present on individuals of Caretta caretta, caught or stranded on the beach in the Northern Ionian Sea (ION) and Southern Adriatic Sea (ADR), have been characterized. The study involved a samples of 142 turtles (108 STRC Policoro; 34 STRC Molfetta), and aimed to 1) identifying temporal differences in the structure of epifauna communities and 2) comparing community structures in the two areas, involved a sample of 142 turtles (108 STRC Policoro; 34 STRC Molfetta). Data obtained from the ION individuals were used to test seasonal differences. Differences between ION and ADR samples were evalueted in terms of species richness, abundance and the community structure of epibionts, using univariate and multivariate analyses. Measures of the CCL (Curved Carapace Length) were obtained to identify the predominant age classes of the turtles recovered in the two areas. Finally, an analysis of taxonomic distinctness was performed to further highlight the differences. Comparing the communities on the turtles in the two areas, a greater number of taxa were found in the ION sample than in the ADR sample. The average size of the turtles recovered in the ION was significantly smaller than that of ADR and lastly a greater taxonomic diversity was seen in the ION sample compared to that of the ADR.

For the first time, the qualitative and quantitative characteristics of marine debris ingested by six hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricata) and seven olive ridley (Lepidochelys olivacea) sea turtles from the Gulf of Oman coast of the United Arab Emirates were investigated. The numeric and gravimetric proportions of ingested marine debris obtained from the esophagus, stomach and intestines were quantified following categories of presumed sources, Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD), rigidity, color and plastic polymer types. Marine debris was observed in 28.6% of olive ridley (x: 2.00 items; 4.83 g) and 83.3% of hawksbill specimens (x: 6.00 ± 2.32 items; 0.32 ± 0.24 g). Overall, the results of this preliminary study suggest that hawksbill sea turtles were ingesting marine debris at higher frequencies and that plastics were observed to be the most predominant debris ingested. However, non-plastic rubbish, particularly metallic fishing gear (fish hooks and fish traps), were observed to present lethal hazards for both species.

Sea turtles are reptiles that have inhabited the earth for 100 million years. These are divided into 2 families (Cheloniidae and Dermochelyidae) and 7 species of sea turtles in the world: the leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coriacea); hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata); Kemp’s ridley (Lepidochelys kempii); olive ridley (L. olivacea); Loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta); flatback sea turtle (Natator depressus) and green turtle (Chelonia mydas). In particular, Kemp’s ridley is included in the red list of IUCN categorized as “critically endangered”. The most important site around the Word is in Rancho Nuevo, Tamaulipas, Mexico. Where 80–95% of the world’s nesting is concentrated. Other nesting areas are Tepeguajes and Barra del Tordo, in Tamaulipas, and with less intensity in Veracruz (Lechuguillas and El Raudal beaches) and South Padre Island, Texas, USA. They deposit an average of about 90 eggs and hatching takes 40 to 60 days. Therefore, they are vulnerable to different anthropogenic activities and sources of pollution, such as heavy metals, which can cause toxic effects that are harmful to the turtles, damage their physiology and health. To understand the real situation about health and genetic parameters it is necessary to analyze biochemical and molecular factors in this species.

Summary This paper reports three recovered species of digeneans from an adult loggerhead sea turtle - Caretta caretta (Testudines, Cheloniidae) in Brazil. These trematodes include Diaschistorchis pandus (Pronocephalidae), Cymatocarpus solearis (Brachycoeliidae) and Rhytidodes gelatinosus (Rhytidodidae) The first two represent new geographic records. A list of helminths reported from the Neotropical region, Gulf of Mexico and USA (Florida) is presented.

The incomplete skeleton of a juvenile sea turtle (Cheloniidae) is described from the terminal Bartonian (late Middle Eocene) of the Gorny Luch locality (Krasnodar krai, Russia) as Eochelone sp. The new find extends the known geographic distribution of turtles of the genus Eochelone Dollo, 1903, previously known in Europe only from the Lutetian of Belgium and Ukraine, the Bartonian of England and the Priabonian of Spain. In addition, the described specimen has common features with “Allopleuron” qazaqstanense Karl et al., 2012 from the Bartonian and, possibly, the Lutetian of Kazakhstan.

Summary The present note describes the occurrence of Rhytidodoides intestinalis and Rhytidodoides similis (Digenea: Rhytidodidae) in the gallbladder of two juvenile green turtles (Chelonia mydas - Testu- dines, Cheloniidae) found on the coast of Brazil. Both were detected in gallbladder and intestine of green turtles: Rhytidodoides similis (United States, Panama, Costa Rica and Brazil) and R. intestinais (United States, Panama and Costa Rica). This note is the first report of R. intestinalis in Brazil and South-West Atlantic Ocean. Also the histological lesions caused by the parasites in one gallbladder are described.

This paper describes remains of fossil turtles from five Paleogene localities of Crimea. Two are Danian (Ak-Kaya 2 and Sakharnaya Golovka) and three are Bartonian (Ak-Kaya 1, Bakhchisarai and Prolom). The best studied turtle fauna comes from the Ak-Kaya 1 locality and includes three taxa: marine Argillochelys sp. (Cheloniidae) and Cosmochelys sp. (Dermochelyidae), and an unidentified soft-shelled turtle (Trionychidae indet.). Argillochelys sp. shows similarities with Argillochelys antiqua (Konig, 1825) from the Eocene of Europe. The new data expands our knowledge of intraspecific variability and the distribution of turtles of the genera Argillochelys and Cosmochelys. Unidentified cheloniids (Bakhchisarai, Prolom, and Sakharnaya Golovka), dermochelyids (Bakhchisarai and Prolom) and trionychids (Ak-Kaya 2 and Prolom) are described from other Paleogene localities of Crimea.

The loggerhead marine turtle, Caretta caretta, is a widely distributed and endangered species that is facing critical population decline, especially in Colombian Caribbean rookeries. Mitochondrial DNA sequence data are of great importance for the description, monitoring, and phylogenetic analyses of migratory turtle populations. In this study, the first full mitochondrial genome of a loggerhead turtle nesting in the Colombian Caribbean was sequenced and analyzed. This mitochondrial genome consists of 16 362 bp with a nucleotide composition of T: 25.7 %, C: 27 %, A: 35 % and G: 12 %. Sequence annotation of the assembled molecule revealed an organization and number of coding and functional units as reported for other vertebrate mitogenomes. This Colombian loggerhead turtle (Cc-AO-C) showed a novel D-Loop haplotype consisting of thirteen new variable sites, sharing 99.2 % sequence identity with the previously reported Caribbean loggerhead CC-A1 D-Loophaplotype. All 13 protein-coding genes in the Cc-AO-C mitogenome were compared and aligned with those from four other loggerhead turtles from different locations (Florida, Greece, Peru, and Hawaii). Eleven of these genes presented moderate genetic diversity levels, and genes COII and ND5 showed the highest diversity, with average numbers of pair-wise differences of 16.6 and 25, respectively. In addition, the first approach related to t-RNAs 2D and 3D structure analysis in this mitogenome was conducted, leading to observed unique features in two tRNAs (tRNATrp and tRNALeu). The marine turtle phylogeny was revisited with the newly generated data. The entire mitogenome provided phylogenetically informative data, as well as individual genes ND5, ND4, and 16S. In conclusion, this study highlights the importance of complete mitogenome data in revealing gene flow processes in natural loggerhead turtle populations, as well as in understanding the evolutionary history of marine turtles.

The hawksbill turtle Eretmochelys imbricata is a critically endangered species with a worldwide distribution. Limited information is available about the naturally occurring intestinal parasites of this species and what impact these parasites may have on the health of the hawksbill turtle. Diaschistorchis pandus was identified postmortem in 5 hawksbill turtles from Grenada, West Indies, using morphologic characterization. Sanger sequencing was performed for conserved ribosomal regions (5.8S, ITS2, 28S) and the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 gene (COI). Phylogenetic analysis of the 28S rRNA gene sequence data shows D. pandus clustering with other trematodes in the family Pronocephalidae, corroborating morphological classification. No genetic sequences have been previously reported for this trematode species, which has limited the collection of objective epidemiological data about this parasite of marine turtles.

Tortoiseshell is a proteinaceous material derived from the scutes of marine turtles, and was shaped into an abundance of objects, especially luxurious items, at its peak in the seventeenth and eighteenth century. It has continued to be used even after the advent of plastics and remains one of the main causes of illegal poaching of marine turtles, in particular the hawksbill turtle Eretmochelys imbricata . Tortoiseshell is made of structural proteins, of which the most abundant are known as β-keratins, or ‘corneous beta-proteins' (CBPs), a family of short proteins containing a central structure in β-sheets. There are, however, few CBP sequences of marine turtles in protein databases. The scutes of the five main species of marine turtles ( Chelonia mydas , Caretta caretta, Eretmochelys imbricata , Lepidochelys olivacea and Lepidochelys kempii ) were analysed by proteomics, using nano-liquid chromatography-Orbitrap-mass spectrometry to generate peptidic markers for species identification. A total of 187 marker sequences were identified, the large majority of them obtained from automated de novo sequencing. The sequences were classified into peptides A to F: A to D at the N-terminus and central region that forms the β-pleated sheets, E1–4 for a variable region of glycine-repeats region and F at the C-terminus. The markers were tested against a set of combs discovered in various archaeological sites of modern period in France, successfully identifying hawksbill turtle and highlighting patterns of degradation in archaeological tortoiseshell.

We analyzed the internal structure of the nasal cavities of hawksbill, olive ridley and black sea turtles from computed tomography images. The nasal cavities of all three species consisted of a vestibule, nasopharyngeal duct and cavum nasi proprium that included anterodorsal, posterodorsal and anteroventral diverticula, and a small posteroventral salience formed by a fossa of the wall. These findings were similar to those of green and loggerhead sea turtles (Cheloniidae), but differed from those of leatherback sea turtles (Dermochelyidae). Compared to the Cheloniidae species, the nasal cavity in leatherback sea turtles was relatively shorter, wider and larger in volume. Those structural features of the nasal cavity of leatherback sea turtles might help to suppress heat dissipation and reduce water pressure within the nasal cavity in cold and deep waters.

Sea turtles, symbol of longevity, patience, fertility, and freedom, are reptiles that appeared on the earth about 200 million years ago. There are seven species grouped into two families Cheloniidae and Dermochelyidae. These animals are present in all the oceans and seas of the world, except in the polar regions. Sea turtles are a migratory species, moving between their nesting and feeding areas. In the southwest coast of Buenos Aires Province, Argentina, three species of sea turtles are frequently found from the end of spring until the beginning of autumn. These are the loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta), the leatherback sea turtle (Dermochelys coriacea), and the green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas). The estuary of Bahia Blanca is an extensive coastal marine wetland. It is an important feeding area in the Southwestern Atlantic (ASO) for the green turtle specie during its juvenile development stage, mainly due to its omnivorous diet. These coastal areas are also where people settled and ports, industries, and artisanal fisheries later developed. The objective of this chapter is to update the information regarding the value of the wetlands of Bahia Blanca Estuary as an important feeding area for sea turtles, mainly the green turtle specie. We also aim to showcase some research projects and the efforts of conservation and environmental education that have been in progress since 2003 up to the present day.

Sea turtles are difficult to sample because of their protected status; however, museum collections and sea turtle stranding networks provide unique opportunities for parasitological research. Four gastrointestinal tracts from stranded, endangered green turtles, Chelonia mydas, were collected between 1993 and 1995 from the upper Texas coast and opportunistically sampled for parasite fauna. Two new species of Telorchis, a common freshwater amphibian and reptilian intestinal parasite genus, were found and described. Telorchis marinus n. sp. differs from Telorchis mydas n. sp. by its short body length, lack of pharyngeal glands, long esophagus relative to total body length, short and straight cirrus sac, short ventral sucker to ovary length relative to total body length, and an ovary located in the anterior one-third of body; it differs from its congeners in the number of ovary lengths between the ventral sucker and ovary, the number of ventral sucker lengths the cirrus sac extends beyond the posterior margin of the ventral sucker, and the vitelline field extent. Telorchis mydas differs from its congeners in the number of ovary lengths between the ventral sucker and ovary, the number of ventral sucker lengths the cirrus sac extends beyond the posterior margin of the ventral sucker, and the combination of having its ovary position near the midbody and a long, sinuous cirrus sac that is 35-44% of the total body length. Given the taxonomic complexities within Telorchis, a revised key to North American species is provided using morphological characteristics to assist future researchers in delineating true species and appropriate synonymies with molecular explorations. We reject the majority of synonymies in the genus until molecular data are available; we accept the synonymies of Telorchis necturi as Telorchis stunkardi and Telorchis gutturosi as Telorchis chelopi. Both Telorchis linstowi and Telorchis stossichi should be considered as species inquirenda. This is the first confirmed report of Telorchis from a marine host and the first report on parasites of cheloniid sea turtles in Texas, and this study adds to the ever-growing evidence that collections are essential to understanding biodiversity.

Understanding why different life history strategies respond differently to changes in environmental variability is necessary to be able to predict eco-evolutionary population responses to change. Marine megafauna display unusual combinations of life history traits. For example, rays, sharks and turtles are all long-lived, characteristic of slow life histories. However, turtles also have very high reproduction rates and juvenile mortality, characteristic of fast life histories. Sharks and rays, in contrast, produce a few live-born young, which have low mortality rates, characteristic of slow life histories. This raises the question if marine megafaunal responses to environmental variability follow conventional life history patterns, including the pattern that fast life histories are more sensitive to environmental autocorrelation than slow life histories. To answer this question, we used a functional trait approach to quantify for different species of mobulid rays, cheloniid sea turtles and carcharhinid sharks – all inhabitants or visitors of (human-dominated) coastalscapes – how their life history, average size and log stochastic population growth rate, log(λs), respond to changes in environmental autocorrelation and in the frequency of favorable environmental conditions. The faster life histories were more sensitive to temporal frequency of favourable environmental conditions, but both faster and slower life histories were equally sensitive, although of opposite sign, to environmental autocorrelation. These patterns are atypical, likely following from the unusual life history traits that the megafauna display, as responses were linked to variation in mortality, growth and reproduction rates. Our findings signify the importance of understanding how life history traits and population responses to environmental change are linked. Such understanding is a basis for accurate predictions of marine megafauna population responses to environmental perturbations like (over)fishing, and to shifts in the autocorrelation of environmental variables, ultimately contributing toward bending the curve on marine biodiversity loss.

The wide variation in size and content of eukaryotic genomes is mainly attributed to the accumulation of repetitive DNA sequences, like microsatellites, which are tandemly repeated DNA sequences. Sea turtles share a diploid number (2n) of 56, however recent molecular cytogenetic data have shown that karyotype conservatism is not a rule in the group. In this study, the heterochromatin distribution and the chromosomal location of microsatellites (CA)n, (GA)n, (CAG)n, (GATA)n, (GAA)n, (CGC)n and (GACA)n in Chelonia mydas, Caretta caretta, Eretmochelys imbricata and Lepidochelys olivacea were comparatively investigated. The obtained data showed that just the (CA)n, (GA)n, (CAG)n and (GATA)n microsatellites were located on sea turtle chromosomes, preferentially in heterochromatic regions of the microchromosomes (mc). Variations in the location of heterochromatin and microsatellites sites, especially in some pericentromeric regions of macrochromosomes, corroborate to proposal of centromere repositioning occurrence in Cheloniidae species. Furthermore, the results obtained with the location of microsatellites corroborate with the temperature sex determination mechanism proposal and the absence of heteromorphic sex chromosomes in sea turtles. The findings are useful for understanding part of the karyotypic diversification observed in sea turtles, especially those that explain the diversification of Carettini from Chelonini species.

Introduction: Lepidochelys olivacea is the most abundant sea turtle in the Colombian Pacific and oceanographic conditions at the Eastern Tropical Pacific may have an effect on its reproductive behavior Objective: To assess the relationship between reproductive aspects of L. olivacea nesting at Gorgona island and sea surface temperature at local and regional scales. Methods: Monthly mean data of reproductive attributes associated with nesting females, nests, eggs and hatchlings were established using records from Gorgona’s National Natural Park nesting monitoring and were correlated (cross-correlations) with SST of Gorgona island and Panama Bight, and with the temperature variability of the El Niño 1+2, El Niño 3, El Niño 3.4 and El Niño 4 regions, their thermal anomalies, and the ONI and SOI indexes. Significant correlations were included in a Generalized Additive Model. Results: Highest inverse correlation since maximum correlation is 1 was established between visits to the beach, number of nesting females, number of nests, clutch size, incubation days and hatching success and Niño 1+2 region with a lag of 12 months, whereas egg diameter, egg weight, straight carapace length and width and weight of hatchlings were correlated with Niño 4 anomaly, SOI and ONI indexes. It was also found that there is a non-linear tendency to decrease number of nesting females, number of nests, clutch size, egg diameter and egg weight with regional positive anomalies. Conclusions: Nesting attributes of L. olivacea in Gorgona correlate mainly with variations in regional SST, being low at high sea surface temperatures the year prior to nesting (12-month lag). Resumen Introducción: Lepidochelys olivacea es la tortuga marina más abundante del Pacífico colombiano y las condiciones oceanográficas en el Pacífico Oriental Tropical podrían tener un efecto en su comportamiento reproductivo. Objetivo: Evaluar la relación entre los aspectos reproductivos de L. olivacea anidantes en isla Gorgona y la temperatura superficial del mar a escala local y regional. Métodos: Se estableció la información promedio mensual de los atributos asociados con las hembras anidantes, nidos, huevos y neonatos utilizando los registros del monitoreo de anidación del Parque Natural Nacional Gorgona y se correlacionaron (correlación cruzada) con la temperatura superficial del mar de la Ensenada de Panamá y las aguas de Gorgona, y con la variabilidad en la temperatura de las regiones El Niño 1+2, El Niño 3, El Niño 3.4 y El Niño 4, sus anomalías térmicas y con los índices ONI y SOI. Las correlaciones significativas se incluyeron en modelos aditivos generalizados. Resultados: Las correlaciones inversas más altas, considerando que la máxima correlación es 1 se establecieron entre las visitas a la playa, el número de hembras anidantes, el número de nidos, el tamaño de las nidadas, los días de incubación y el éxito de eclosión y la región Niño 1+2 con un rezago de 12 meses, mientras que el diámetro y el peso de los huevos, el largo y ancho del caparazón y peso de los neonatos se correlacionaron con la anomalía de Niño 4 y los índices SOI y ONI. También se encontró que existe una tendencia no lineal a disminuir el número de hembras anidantes, número de nidos, tamaño de nidadas, diámetro y el peso de los huevos con anomalías regionales positivas. Conclusiones: Los atributos de anidación de L. olivacea en Gorgona se correlacionan principalmente con las variaciones en la temperatura superficial del mar regional, siendo bajos a temperaturas altas en el año anterior a la anidación (rezago de 12 meses).

Introduction: Sea turtles have temperature dependent sex determination. The increase in global temperature leads to higher nest temperatures that can cause a prevalence of females, threatening the future of these species. Objective: The present work aims to evaluate the trend of incubation temperatures and the incubation period, as well as to estimate the sex ratio in nests of Chelonia mydas at Antonio and La Barca beaches, Southwestern Cuba, during the seasons from 2012 to 2018. Methods: Temperature data loggers were placed in green turtle nests with a representativeness that varied between the years analyzed. To assess the temporal variation of temperatures and incubation periods, a Kruskal-Wallis test was performed in each case. Sex ratio was estimated from its relation with temperature and incubation duration. Results: At La Barca beach, there was a 1.5 °C increase in the mean nest temperature from 2012 to 2018, although no differences were found in the period from 2015 to 2018. At Antonio beach, there is no trend since no differences were found in the mean nest temperature except for the years 2013 and 2017, which had lower temperatures than the other seasons. In both beaches mean nest temperature exceeded 30 °C in most of the years. As a result, there was a predominance of nests with incubation periods shorter than 55 days. With these values, a female hatchling production over 90 % is expected in both study sites. Conclusions: In correspondence with the registered temperature and incubation period values, most of the years reflect a hatchling production biased towards females in both beaches. Proporción sexual de las crías de la tortuga verde Chelonia mydas (Testudines: Cheloniidae) en la Península de Guanahacabibes, Cuba. Introducción: La determinación del sexo en tortugas marinas depende de la temperatura. El aumento de la temperatura global conlleva a temperaturas más altas en los nidos, lo cual puede provocar un predominio de las hembras, amenazando el futuro de estas especies. Objetivo: El presente trabajo busca evaluar la tendencia de las temperaturas y los períodos de incubación, así como estimar la proporción sexual en nidos de Chelonia mydas, en las playas Antonio y La Barca, suroeste de Cuba, durante las temporadas del 2012 al 2018. Métodos: Se colocaron sensores para registrar la temperatura en los nidos de esta especie con una representatividad que varió entre los años analizados. Para evaluar la variación temporal de las temperaturas y los periodos de incubación, se realizó una prueba de Kruskal-Wallis en cada caso. Las estimaciones de las proporciones sexuales se realizaron a partir de la temperatura y duración de la incubación. Resultados: En playa La Barca, hubo un incremento de 1.5 °C en la temperatura del nido promedio del 2012 al 2018, aunque no se encontraron diferencias en el periodo de 2015-2018. En playa Antonio, no hay tendencia ya que no se encontraron diferencias en la temperatura del nido promedio, excepto para el 2013 y 2017, los cuales tuvieron temperaturas menores que en las otras temporadas. En ambas playas la temperatura del nido promedio excedió 30 °C en la mayoría de los años. Como resultado, hubo un predominio de nidos con periodos de incubación inferiores a 55 días. Con estos valores, se espera una producción de hembras en las crías superior al 90 % enambos sitios de estudio. Conclusiones: En correspondencia con los valores de temperatura y periodo de incubación registrados, la mayoría de los años refleja una producción de crías sesgada hacia las hembras en ambas playas.

Sea turtles are considered flagship species for marine biodiversity conservation and are considered to be at varying risk of extinction globally. Cases of hybridism have been reported in sea turtles, but chromosomal analyses are limited to classical karyotype descriptions and a few molecular cytogenetic studies. In order to compare karyotypes and understand evolutive mechanisms related to chromosome dif­ferentiation in this group, Chelonia mydas, Caretta caretta, Eretmochelys imbricata, and Lepidochelys olivacea were cytogenetically characterized in the present study. When the obtained cytogenetic data were compared with the putative ancestral Cryptodira karyotype, the studied species showed the same diploid number (2n) of 56 chromosomes, with some variations in chromosomal morphology (karyotypic formula) and minor changes in longitudinal band locations. In situ localization using a 18S ribosomal DNA probe indicated a homeologous microchromosome pair bearing a 45S ribosomal DNA locus and size heteromorphism in all 4 species. Interstitial telomeric sites were identified in a microchromosome pair in C. mydas and C. caretta. The data showed that interspecific variations occurred in chromosomal sets among the Cheloniidae species, in addition to other Cryptodira karyotypes. These variations generated lineage-specific karyotypic diversification in sea turtles, which will have considerable implications for hybrid recognition and for the study, the biology, ecology, and evolutionary history of regional and global populations. Furthermore, we demonstrated that some chromosome rearrangements occurred in sea turtle species, which is in conflict with the hypothesis of conserved karyotypes in this group.

In chelonids, oxygen is primarily stored in the lungs during a dive. Therefore, management of blood oxygen transportation to peripheral tissues by cardiovascular adjustments during submergence is crucial to maximize their dive duration, and consequently, the time spent for ecological activities such as foraging. However, the cardiac response to exercise has rarely been examined in sea turtles. In this study, heart rate and its relationship with exercise during voluntary dives were determined in six captive green turtles (19.4±1.5 kg) by simultaneously recording depth, acceleration and electrocardiogram. Our results demonstrated that the heart rate of green turtles was generally low (11.1±0.4 bpm) during resting dives, but they often exhibited instantaneously extreme tachycardia (up to 78.4 bpm). Green turtles elevated their heart rate up to 39.8±1.5 bpm during ventilation after resting dives, while up to 33.1±1.4 bpm after active dives. The heart rate immediately elevated with onset of exercise, and increased linearly with exercise. This result may indicate that turtles immediately need to transport oxygen from the lungs to peripheral tissues by pulmonary and systemic circulations to meet the metabolic demands of exercise because they mainly store oxygen in their lungs., Summary: Green turtles showed immediate cardiac response to exercise during submergence, presumably because they store oxygen primarily in the lungs and need blood circulation to meet the metabolic demand.

Marine turtle hybridization is usually sporadic and involves reports of only a few individuals; however, Brazilian populations have high hybridization rates. Here we investigated the presence of hybrids in morphologically identified immature hawksbills (Eretmochelys imbricata) along the South Western Atlantic (SWA). We sequenced one mitochondrial (D-Loop) and three nuclear DNA (RAG1, RAG2, and CMOS) markers to better understand the patterns and characteristics of hybrids. We identified 22 hybrids (n = 270), 11 of them at the extreme South of the SWA. Uruguay had the highest hybrid frequency in the SWA (~37.5%) followed by southern Brazil with 30%. These are common areas for loggerheads (Caretta caretta) but uncommon for hawksbills, and these hybrids may be adopting the behavior of loggerheads. By analyzing nuclear markers, we can infer that 50% of the sampled hybrids are first generation (F1) and 36% are the result of backcrosses between hybrids and pure E. imbricata (> F1). We also report for the first time immature E. imbricata x Lepidochelys olivacea hybrids at the Brazilian coast. Considering the high frequency of hybrids in the SWA, continuous monitoring should be performed to assess the fitness, genetic integrity, and extent of changes in the gene pools of involved populations.

Although sea turtles have received substantial focus worldwide, research on the immature life stages is still relatively limited. The latter is of particular importance, given that a large proportion of sea turtle populations comprises immature individuals. We set out to identify knowledge gaps and identify the main barriers hindering research in this field. We analyzed the perceptions of sea turtle experts through an online survey which gathered their opinions on the current state of affairs on immature sea turtle research, including species and regions in need of further study, priority research questions, and barriers that have interfered with the advancement of research. Our gap analysis indicates that studies on immature leatherback Dermochelys coriacea and hawksbill Eretmochelys imbricata turtles are lacking, as are studies on all species based in the Indian, South Pacific, and South Atlantic Oceans. Experts also perceived that studies in population ecology, namely on survivorship and demography, and habitat use/behavior, are needed to advance the state of knowledge on immature sea turtles. Our survey findings indicate the need for more interdisciplinary research, collaborative efforts (e.g. data-sharing, joint field activities), and improved communication among researchers, funding bodies, stakeholders, and decision-makers. SUMMARY: The esophagus is a muscular tube whose function is to transport food from the mouth to the stomach and basically contain the same layers as the rest of the digestive tract. The morphological knowledge of structures involved in basic physiological processes in organisms is extremely important in the acquisition of ecological and evolutionary knowledge about species. This study produces morphological information proving the structures found in the green turtle's esophagus. The animals were dissected according to the methodology used by Wyneken, allowing analysis of external and internal morphological characteristics of the esophagus. The samples were processed for microscopic analysis by light and scanning electron microscopy. It was observed that the esophagus presents thin and conical dermal papillae facing the stomach throughout the mucosa to the gastroesophageal portion, decreasing its size at the end of its extension, covered by a thick keratin layer on keratinized pavement epithelial tissue. It is concluded that the esophagus of Chelonia mydas is covered by a layer of conical keratinized dermal papillae important to exert the mechanical and protective function of the mucosa of this organ, considering that the feeding of these animals is extremely abrasive, besides serving as protection so that the food does not return.

This dataset contains information on the presence and distribution of sea turtles in Togo. Observations were carried out through a network of ten ecoguards (local guides), facilitated by five fishermen, and coordinated by a field technician, all under the supervision of a scientific coordinator. Data on the occurrence or direct observation of sea turtles on the Togolese coast from September 2012 to August 2013 is presented based on 740 occurrences.

The Kemp's ridley (Lepidochelys kempii) is the most endangered sea turtle species. During 1966–2017, an annual count of nests (i.e., clutches of eggs laid) has served as an annual index of Kemp's ridley nesting female abundance on the Gulf of Mexico (GoM) index beach in Tamaulipas, Mexico. This index was increasing exponentially at 19% per year in 2009, but it dropped unexpectedly by more than a third in 2010 and through 2017 remained well below levels predicted. We hypothesize that pre-2010 declining carrying capacity for the Kemp's ridley population within the GoM contributed to this nesting setback. We discuss pre-2010 factors that may have caused carrying capacity to decline, including degradation of the GoM ecosystem, the exponentially increasing Kemp's ridley population, and declining per capita availability of neritic (i.e., postpelagic) Kemp's ridley food, including natural prey and scavenged discarded bycatch from shrimp trawling. The Fethiye-Göcek Specially Protected Area (SPA) is an important protected area in Turkey that includes important loggerhead turtle nesting beaches and marine habitats for sea turtles. Here, we analysed the number of stranded loggerhead and green sea turtles in the Fethiye-Göcek SPA, Turkey. A total of 139 dead sea turtles (102 loggerhead and 37 green turtles) were found between the years 2000 and 2016. The majority of stranded loggerheads were considered to be adults (77.45%), while the majority of stranded green turtles were immature individuals (86.49%). Mean annual strandings were 6.0 individuals for loggerhead turtles and 2.2 individuals for green turtles. The main cause of strandings was determined as incidental catch in fishing gear (51% for loggerhead turtle, 41% for green turtle) and marine vehicle collisions (23% for loggerhead turtle and 27% for green turtles). Strandings were encountered all year round. These results suggest that the Fethiye-Göcek SPA should not be only considered as a seasonal nesting ground for loggerhead turtles, but also a year-round feeding ground for both species. An increase in the number of stranded turtles in the study area suggests that negative anthropogenic effects on sea turtle populations are relatively high and that conservation and monitoring efforts on the nesting beaches are not sufficient to protect sea turtle populations. Research is required to identify the fisheries' segments and metiers responsible for sea turtle mortality in order to develop bycatch mitigation, prioritising the marine habitats of the Fethiye-Göcek SPA. © 2018 Elsevier Ltd

When the nests of marine turtles are at a risk of inundation, relocation of the nests are often used in the conservation measures. Here, I determined the effect of nest relocation on Loggerhead Turtle (Caretta caretta) egg hatching success during the 2013 and 2014 nesting seasons in the Goksu Delta, Mersin, Turkey. I compared natural and relocated clutches, including those relocated before and after inundation, and evaluated 102 (94.6%) and 63 (81.1%) of survived nests in 2013 and 2014 respectively. Relocated nests experienced a 30% decrease in hatching success and a more prolonged incubation period compared to nests left in situ. Egg failure in nests relocated before and after inundation was similar in early-stage embryos, whereas it was three-fold higher in mid-stage embryos and two-fold lower in late-stage embryos. Descriptions of the developmental stages of embryonic marine turtles are presented in the form of a dichotomous key supported by drawings to facilitate identifying stages of development in the field. The key emphasizes the sequential appearance or loss of external morphological structures that can be seen either with the unaided eye or with a ×10 hand lens and a handheld light. Stages are placed in the context of normal beach temperatures to facilitate estimation of laying date, emergence date, and events that cause embryonic mortality. Measurements of embryos are presented to assist determining stage.

We report 8 new records of Lepidochelys olivacea marine turtle in the Uruguayan waters, indicating this area as thesouthernmost limit of distribution for this species in the western Atlantic Ocean. In addition, 1 specimen was subjectedto genetic analysis, revealing its population origin in the western Atlantic nesting colonies (Surinam, French Guiana,and Brazil). This report represents an update of the distribution of L. olivacea in the southwestern Atlantic and providesinsight into the morphological and genetic characterization of the species at temperate waters.

Summary The present note describes the occurrence of Monticellius indicum Mehra, 1939 (Digenea: Spirorchiidae) in an adult loggerhead turtle, Caretta caretta (Linnaeus, 1758), found on the coast of the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Pathological changes due to spirorchiid eggs (type 1 and 3) were found in gastrointestinal system, endocrine system, and heart. This parasite has previously been described in the green turtle, Chelonia mydas (Linnaeus, 1758), from Pakistan, Brazil and Costa Rica as well as in the hawksbill sea turtle, Eretmochelys imbricata (Linnaeus, 1766), in Brazil. This note reports the loggerhead turtle as a new host for M. indicum.

Although several strandings of the leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coriacea Vandelli, 1761) have been reported in Korea, its haplotype or mitogenome have yet to be investigated. Herein, we report the first complete mitogenome of D. coriacea. The 16,501-bp sequenced mitogenome is similar to those of other marine turtles, and the particular genetic features reported in birds and turtles were also found in ND3 and ATP8. The comparison of the control region verified that D. coriacea stranded in Korea belonged to the haplotype JD1 (identical to haplotypes I and Dc9.1). Multigene phylogeny revealed that D. coriacea was well separated from other Cheloniidae species, and the overall tree topology was congruent with the recent phylogenetic analysis of marine turtles. These results provide information fundamental for genetic and conservation studies on leatherbacks, especially the critically endangered West Pacific Ocean subpopulation.

Five of the seven extant sea turtle species in the world forage on the coast of Southern Brazil at least in some stage of their life cycle. The green turtle Chelonia mydas frequently strands on beaches of Rio Grande do Sul State. The species is currently classified as vulnerable to extinction in the region, and pollution by marine debris is one of the most conspicuous threats to its conservation. In this study, we quantified and characterized plastic ingestion by juvenile green turtles in waters off the southern Brazilian coast between 2013 and 2016. We analysed the gastrointestinal content of 17 beached carcasses and registered debris ingestion in 15 individuals (88%). On average, each green turtle ingested 38.4 ± 88.5 plastic fragments. White and transparent plastic bags and plastic sheets were predominant. Our results indicate a high interaction between juvenile green turtles and marine debris off the coast of Southern Brazil.

Sea turtles suffer from numerous threats such as predation, tidal inundation, and coastal building. We aimed to assess the effectiveness of hatchery technique on Göksu Delta beach, Turkey during the nesting season of 2010. For this purpose, eggs of loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) nests under the risk of tidal inundation were transferred into two protected hatchery sites that were constructed on Göksu Delta beach, in which there were no risk of predation and inundation, and the other nests were left to remain in situ. Hatching success of hatchery and natural nests were calculated. In addition, temperatures of both hatchery and natural nests (5 and 6 nests, respectively) were recorded, and sex ratios were determined using these nest temperatures and incubation periods. It was determined that hatching success increased with increasing distance from the sea (until 31 m) (r2 = 0.98), increasing incubation period (up to 60 days) (r2 = 0.68), and decreasing clutch size (r2 = 0.93), implying that the production of male hatchling is high in a nest if hatching success of that nest is high (or vice versa). Mean hatching success, incubation period, and nest temperature for hatchery nests were found to be 72.8%, 51.1 days, and 30.2 °C, respectively, while the corresponding values for natural nests were found to be 40.5%, 49.9 days, and 31.1 °C, respectively. It was also detected that hatchery nests produced higher proportion of male hatchlings (25.2%) compared with natural nests (13.5%). Based on all these results, it can be concluded that hatchery management on this beach is not a completely effective conservation technique. Nest relocation and/or hatchery management enable the conservationists to increase hatching success rate, but they cause sex ratio alteration. In this respect, we can only partially support nest relocation and/or hatchery management. They should be considered as a last option due to sex ratio alteration. © 2017 Elsevier Ltd

The Ogasawara Islands in Japan represent an important rookery for green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) in the Pacific Ocean. The marine turtle population in these islands was severely depleted due to overexploitation in the 1800s; however, continuous nesting surveys starting in 1975 showed signs of a gradual recovery, and an upward trend of nesting females has been observed in recent years. The Japanese government undertook a “hatch and release project” to recover the turtle stock in 1910 as the world's first attempt of a sea turtle hatchery. A total of more than 251,000 hatchlings were released into the wild as a part of the project; however, its contribution to the recent increase in nesting females is not well understood. Changing climate is affecting life all over the world. The loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) is one of the most vulnerable turtle species to climate change, particularly with regard to sex determination being affected by high temperatures in most nesting areas, such as the Cuban archipelago. As yet, species information is scarce for the Cuban archipelago as a whole. This study provides information about loggerheads in order to determine the possible effects of climate change on this species, especially in Guanahacabibes. We monitored 10 beaches along the southernmost coast of the Guanahacabibes Peninsula for 18 yrs (1998–2015), from May to September of each year, to determine nesting activity and density. This study was conducted in Sao Sebastiao Channel, along the Southern Brazil Platform, and describes the occurrence of 3 species of sea turtles in the area, their main behavioral patterns, and the anthropogenic-related threats. Green turtles (Chelonia mydas) showed a preference for a site covered by Halodule spp. seagrass and hawksbill turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata) showed a preference for a sheltered bay with little wave action and the presence of rocks covered with Palythoa caribaeorum. These sites exhibited different characteristics due to the presence of ocean currents and variable habitat types in the Channel. This study enabled the description of the Sao Sebastiao Channel as a foraging and resting area for sea turtles. We also suggest changing the category of the local marine protected area to enable better protection of turtles.

Sea turtles are promiscuous breeders with both males and females mating multiply. Due to this mating system, multiple paternity (MP) occurs in sea turtle clutches, and the frequency of MP varies greatly within and among species. In this study, the paternity of a population of loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) nesting on Dalyan Beach in Turkey was investigated using two highly polymorphic microsatellite markers (CcP2F11 and CcP7C06). Tissue samples collected from randomly selected hatchlings (a total of 522 hatchlings) from two to three successive clutches (a total of 25 clutches) of 10 nesting females were used for paternity analysis with an average sampling effort of 28.2% of offspring per clutch. Evidence of MP in seven out of 10 females (70%) was found, and it was detected that four out of these seven females mated with at least two males, whereas the remaining three females with at least three males. By analysing the successive clutches of females, it was detected that both the number and genotype of contributing sires was same in all clutches of a given female, possibly due to the lack of successful inter-nesting mating in this population. The high frequency of MP implies the possible high genetic diversity within this population. This study indicates that the density of individuals may be the reason of the high frequency of MP in this relatively small population because mating takes place mainly in a narrow area in Dalyan. The possible mating behaviours of the sea turtles and their population structures were discussed in light of the high frequency of MP within this population reported for the first time. © 2016 Elsevier B.V.

Summary This paper describes the occurrence of Enodiotrema megachondrus (Looss, 1899) Looss, 1901 in a juvenile green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas Linnaeus, 1758) found on the coast of Brazil. This parasite has been described in Caretta caretta from Egypt, France, the Mediterranean Sea, the Madeira Archipelago, the Adriatic Sea and the USA, in C. mydas from Egypt and the USA, in Eretmochelys imbricata from Cuba, in Lepidochelys olivacea from Mexico and Costa Rica and in Lepidochelys kempii from USA. This note represents the first report of E. megachondus in a green sea turtle in the South-West Atlantic Ocean.

This paper reports the first occurrence of Plesiochorus cymbiformis (Digenea: Gorgoderidae) in a loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta [Testudines, Cheloniidae]) in Brazil and describes the histological findings of related injuries to the urinary bladder.
