Ancient DNA (aDNA) has been applied to evolutionary questions across a wide variety of taxa. Here, we leverage aDNA from millennia-old coral fossil fragments for the first time to gain holistic insights into a rapidly declining western Atlantic reef ecosystem. We sampled four Acropora palmata fragments (dated 4215 BCE - 1099 CE) obtained from two Florida Keys reef cores. From these samples, we established it is possible to both sequence ancient DNA (aDNA) from reef cores and place the data in the context of modern-day genetic variation. We recovered varying amounts of nuclear DNA exhibiting the characteristic signatures of aDNA from all A. palmata fragments. To describe the holobiont sensu lato, which plays a crucial role in reef health, we utilized metagenome-assembled genomes as a reference to recover a large additional proportion of ancient microbial DNA from the samples. The samples shared many common microbes with modern-day coral holobionts from the same reef, suggesting remarkable holobiont stability over time. Comparing the ancient Acropora palmata data to whole-genome sequencing data from living acroporids, we found that while slightly separate, ancient samples were most closely related to individuals of their own species. Together, these results paint a broad picture of coral holobiont change over time and lay a foundation to study historical environmental stress and evolutionary constraints. By better understanding the past genetic pressures on coral, we can gain valuable insights into the adaptive potential and trajectories of reefs under changing climatic conditions in the future.

El estudio de las redes de interacción mutualista es fundamental porque permite conocer las especies que se relacionan al considerar los análisis de sus dietas y al evaluar el efecto de las perturbaciones de un ecosistema. Para una reserva es importante reconocer estos fenómenos, pues evidencian si los esfuerzos de conservación han sido efectivos. Este trabajo se desarrolló en los años 2014 y 2017 en la vereda Playa Güío del municipio de San José el Guaviare, Colombia. Para conocer la amplitud del nicho y el solapamiento de dietas se calculó el índice de Levins y el índice de Morisita respectivamente. Usando la modularidad, la robustez y el anidamiento (NODF), se analizaron las redes de interacción. Se registraron 18 especies de murciélagos frugívoros y 20 especies de plantas pertenecientes a las familias Piperaceae, Urticaceae, Moraceae, Hypericaceae y Solanaceae. El índice de Levins demostró que las especies de murciélagos prefieren un recurso, mientras que el índice de Morisita evidencia un traslape en las especies frugívoras nómadas y las sedentarias. El anidamiento y la robustez disminuyeron en 2017 ya que aumentó el número de especies, mientras que la modularidad aumentó. La vereda Playa Güío mantiene una red de interacción con especies generalistas asociadas a procesos de regeneración natural importantes para los objetivos de conservación de la reserva, además, las métricas calculadas indican que esta red de interacción mutualista es estable y se puede mantener en el tiempo.

Spatial segregation of closely related species is usually attributed to differences in stress tolerance and competitive ability. For both animals and plants, reproductive interactions between close relatives can impose a fitness cost that is more detrimental to the rarer species. Frequencydependent mating interactions may thus prevent the establishment of immigrants within heterospecific populations, maintaining spatial segregation of species. Despite strong spatial segregation in natural populations, two sympatric California monkeyflowers(Mimulus nudatusandM. guttatus) survive and reproduce in the other’s habitat when transplanted reciprocally. We hypothesized that a frequency-dependent mating disadvantage maintains spatial segregation of these monkeyflowers during natural immigration. To evaluate this hypothesis, we performed two field experiments. First, we experimentally added immigrants in varying numbers to sites dominated by heterospecifics. Second, we reciprocally transplanted arrays of varying resident and immigrant frequencies. Immigrant seed viability decreased with conspecific rarity forM. guttatus, but notM. nudatus. We observed immigrant minority disadvantage for both species, but driven by different factors– frequency-dependent hybridization forM. guttatus, and competition for resources and/or pollinators forM. nudatus.Overall, our results suggest a major role for reproductive interference in spatial segregation that should be evaluated along with stress tolerance and competitive ability.

The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) is an important cushion plant hotspot. However, the distribution of cushion plants on the QTP is unknown, as are the factors that drive cushion plant distribution, limiting our understanding of the evolution of cushion species in the region. In this study, we assessed spatial patterns of total cushion plant diversity (including taxonomic and phylogenetic) over the entire QTP and compared patterns of diversity of cushion plants with different typologies (i.e., compact vs. loose). We also examined how these patterns were related to climatic features. Our results indicate that the southern QTP hosts the highest total cushion plant richness, especially in the south-central Hengduan Mountains subregion. The total number of cushion species declines from south to north and from southeast to northwest. Compact cushion plants exhibit similar patterns as the total cushion plant richness, whereas loose cushion plants show random distribution. Cushion plant phylogenetic diversity showed a similar pattern as that of the total cushion plant richness. In addition, cushion plant phylogenetic community structure was clustered in the eastern and southwestern QTP, whereas random or overdispersed in other areas. Climatic features represented by annual energy and water trends, seasonality and extreme environmental factors, had significant effects on cushion plant diversity patterns but limited effects on the phylogenetic community structure, suggesting that climatic features indeed promote the formation of cushion plants. Because cushion plants play vital roles in alpine ecosystems, our findings not only promote our understanding of the evolution and formation of alpine cushion plant diversity but also provide an indispensable foundation for future studies on cushion plant functions and thus alpine ecosystem sustainability in the entire QTP region.

Non-destructive methods for estimating carbon storage capacity are becoming increasingly popular as they do not harm the individual trees or the ecosystem. However, currently the destructive method of sampling trees for estimating their carbon storage capacity is widely practiced throughout the world. Therefore, the present study was conducted in a mangrove conservation forest located in a tropical island, Sri Lanka, with the objective of developing allometric equations to predict the stem carbon content of Lumnitzera racemosa and Avicennia marina using non-destructive method of sampling. The allometric model developed for Lumnitzera racemosa from this study, to determine stem carbon content is: Ln C = -3.485+ 1.155 Ln SH + 1.892 Ln DBH, Where, C: Stem carbon content, SH: merchantable stem height, DBH: Diameter at breast height. For A. marina, only diameter at breast height was statistically significant with stem carbon content and the allometric equation was, Ln C = −3.483 + 2.407 Ln DBH. The models were evaluated using p value, R2 value, residual diagram, model bias values and model efficiency values. The models were validated by calculating residual values as the difference between the actual stem carbon content and predicted stem carbon content from the models for Lumnitzera racemosa and A. marina. Further, there was no significant difference between the mean values of the measured stem carbon content and the predicted stem carbon content using the prediction models. The results indicate that the developed allometric equations in the present study are practically applicable in the field to estimate the stem carbon content of Lumnitzera racemosa and A. marina. Further, these estimations can contribute to make more accurate valuations on carbon stocks of sequestered carbon necessary for carbon trading purposes and sustainable management of mangrove forest ecosystems.

Understanding dreissenid mussel population dynamics and their impacts on lake ecosystems requires quantifying individual growth across a range of habitats. Most dreissenid mussel growth rates have been estimated in nutrient rich or nearshore environments, but mussels have continued to expand into deep, cold, low-nutrient habitats of the Great Lakes. We measured annual quagga mussel (Dreissena rostriformis bugensis) growth at 15 m, 45 m, and 90 m in Lake Ontario using caged mussels near Oswego, New York, USA from June 2018 to May 2019. Quagga mussel growth (starting size 12 mm) was greatest at 15 m (mean shell length increase = 10.2 mm), and was lower at 45 m (5.9 mm) and 90 m (0.7 mm). Caged mussels were obtained from near the 90-m site and those reared at 15 and 45 m developed thicker shells than those that were caged at 90 m. We observed relatively high colonization by quagga and, to a lesser degree, zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) at 15 m, very few colonizers at 45 m, and none at 90 m. Higher growth potential, but low natural mussel densities observed at 15 m and 45 m suggest factors other than growth limit dreissenid abundance at these depths. The relatively slow dreissenid growth rates observed in offshore habitats are consistent with the gradual abundance increases documented in these zones across the Great Lakes and suggest new mussels that become established in these habitats may contribute to ecosystem effects for decades.

Ten species of fiddler crab are reported inhabiting the intertidal zone of a shore on Kaledupa Island, Indonesia. This is one of the highest recorded numbers of fiddler crab species living in sympatry, equating to over two-thirds of those known from the Wallacea biogeographic region and more than half of all those recorded from Indonesia. The descriptions to identify and distinguish these ten species are provided using a suite of characters e.g., carapace, major cheliped, male gonopods, gastric mills, life colouration in males and females, and notes on their ecology and distribution. Specimens were observed and collected in the Wakatobi National Park, near the village of Ambeua on Kaledupa island, Sulawesi Tenggara, Indonesia. Gastric mills are described for the first time for Gelasimus jocelynae, Paraleptuca crassipes, Tubuca coarctata, T. demani and T. dussumieri. A tabulation of anatomical features and colouration for all species in this study is provided as a support for field studies. It identifies features that support the recently proposed taxonomic revision of fiddler crabs by Shih et al. (2016).

Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity levels can be used as an indicator for AChE inhibition due to pesticide poisoning in bird species. We assessed the comparative brain cholinesterase (AChE) activity level of five bird species inhabiting pesticide exposed croplands and Protected Area i.e. Deva Vatala National Park (DVNP), Bhimber by using a spectrophotometric method. AChE activity levels ranged from 56.3 to 85.9 µmol/min/g of brain tissue of birds representing DVNP. However, AChE activity levels ranged from 27.6 to 79.9 µmol/min/g of brain tissue of birds representing croplands. AChE activity levels observed in Jungle babbler, Common babbler, and Red-vented bulbul showed significant differences (P < 0.05) at two sites. However, White wagtail and Black drongo demonstrated non-significant differences (P > 0.05). Maximum inhibition was recorded in Jungle babbler (53%) followed by Common babbler (35%), Red-vented bulbul (18%), White wagtail (15%), and Black drongo (7%). The brain cholinesterase inhibition levels under-protected ecosystems (DVNP, Bhimber) and agricultural landscape suggest insecticidal contamination and its impact on avifauna diversity. The study also emphasizes on the importance of pesticide-free zones to protect the biodiversity of birds. Resumo Os níveis de atividade da acetilcolinesterase (AChE) podem ser usados como um indicador para a inibição da AChE devido ao envenenamento por pesticidas em espécies de aves. Avaliamos o nível de atividade comparativa da colinesterase cerebral (AChE) de cinco espécies de aves que habitam áreas cultivadas expostas a pesticidas e Área Protegida, ou seja, Deva Vatala National Park (DVNP), Bhimber, usando um método espectrofotométrico. Os níveis de atividade da AChE variaram de 56,3 a 85,9 µmol / min / g de tecido cerebral de aves representando DVNP. No entanto, os níveis de atividade da AChE variaram de 27,6 a 79,9 µmol / min / g de tecido cerebral de aves representando áreas de cultivo. Os níveis de atividade de AChE observados no tagarela da selva, tagarela comum e bulbul vermelho exalado mostraram diferenças significativas (P < 0,05) em dois locais. No entanto, alvéola branca e drongo preto demonstraram diferenças não significativas (P > 0,05). A inibição máxima foi registrada no tagarela da selva (53%), seguido pelo tagarela comum (35%), bulbul vermelho (18%), alvéola branca (15%) e drongo preto (7%). Os níveis de inibição da colinesterase cerebral nos ecossistemas subprotegidos (DVNP, Bhimber) e na paisagem agrícola sugerem contaminação por inseticida e seu impacto na diversidade da avifauna. O estudo também enfatiza a importância das zonas livres de pesticidas para proteger a biodiversidade das aves.

Calvatia is a genus of gasteroid fungi, comprising about 47 species worldwide. In this paper we report the second worldwide occurrence of two poorly known species of Calvatia, recorded in the Cerrado biome of Brazil: C. oblongispora and C. nodulata. Detailed morphological descriptions and illustrations, including scanning electron micrographs of hyphae and basidiospores are provided, as well a discussion on their taxonomy and geographic distribution.

Birds are very valuable indicators of species richness and endemic patterns in a specified ecosystem, which eventually help the scientist to measure the environmental degradation. The aim of present study was to know human knowledge and attitude toward urban birds in Faisalabad city, Pakistan. The study conducted in four consecutive months: November 2019 to February 2020. Population of birds was noted from eight residential towns of Faisalabad city, data were collected through questionnaire. Faisalabad has a reasonably large population of birds and present data show that, there is a significant difference between favorite bird of residential areas and institutions. The pigeon received the most likeness in bird population among residential area residents, while the myna received the least. The most popular bird in Faisalabad institutions was the sparrow, while the least popular bird was the common myna. Bird adaptation percentage of residential areas and institutional areas of Faisalabad was the highest for parrot and sparrow respectively. People in residential areas and institutions, on the other hand, adapted least to common myna. It is concluded that people of the study area like birds and offered food and high population of birds are present in study area.

Very little is known about the malacofauna in district Swat of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, situated in the Northern part of Pakistan. The Swat valley possesses a variety of suitable environmental conditions, providing different types of habitats for both flora and fauna. Taken into consideration these points, the present study was conducted to explore the terrestrial snails diversity in agricultural and non-agricultural fields in the lower Swat valley. A total of 417 shells were collected from three sites: Kokarai, Kanju Township, and Deolai. Based on conchological features, three families: Bradybaenidae, Hygromiidae, and Zonitidae were identified using different terrestrial snail keys. In Kokarai and Deolai, shells of members of all the above-mentioned families were found from agricultural fields. In Kanju Township, shells of members of the family Bradybaenidae and Zonitidae were found. From these findings, it was concluded that district Swat possesses a significant malacofauna which was unexplored before and aided more to the existing literature on malacofauna. It also supports the idea that the agroecosystem is rich in species diversity. Further in-depth and extensive study is recommended to be carried out for a detailed taxonomy of the described terrestrial gastropod families. Resumo Muito pouco se sabe sobre a malacofauna no distrito de Swat, na província de Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, situada na parte norte do Paquistão. O vale do Swat possui uma variedade de condições ambientais adequadas, proporcionando diferentes tipos de habitats para a flora e a fauna. Levando em consideração esses pontos, o presente estudo foi conduzido para explorar a diversidade dos caracóis terrestres em campos agrícolas e não agrícolas no vale inferior de Swat. Um total de 417 conchas foram coletadas em três locais: Kokarai, Kanju Township e Deolai. Com base em características concológicas, três famílias: Bradybaenidae, Hygromiidae e Zonitidae foram identificadas usando diferentes chaves de caramujos terrestres. Em Kokarai e Deolai, conchas de membros de todas as famílias mencionadas acima foram encontradas em campos agrícolas. No município de Kanju, foram encontradas conchas de membros da família Bradybaenidae e Zonitidae. A partir dessas constatações, concluiu-se que o distrito de Swat possui uma malacofauna significativa que antes era inexplorada e ajudava mais a literatura existente sobre a malacofauna. Também apoia a ideia de que o agroecossistema é rico em diversidade de espécies. Recomenda-se a realização de um estudo mais aprofundado e extenso para uma taxonomia detalhada das famílias de gastrópodes terrestres descritas.

Physids belong to Class Gastropoda; belong to Phylum Mollusca and being bioindicators, intermediate hosts of parasites and pests hold a key position in the ecosystem. There are three species of Genus Physa i.e. P. fontinalis, Physa acuta and P. gyrina water bodies of Central Punjab and were characterized on the basis of molecular markers High level of genetic diversity was revealed by polymorphic RAPD, however SSR markers were not amplified. The multivariate analysis revealed polymorphism ranging from 9.09 percent to 50 percent among the three Physid species. Total number of 79 loci were observed for the three species under study and 24 loci were observed to be polymorphic. These RAPD fragment(s) can be developed into co dominant markers (SCAR) by cloning and can be further sequenced for the development of the Physa species specific markers to identify the introduced and native species in Pakistan. Resumo Os físidos pertencem à classe Gastropoda; pertencem ao filo Mollusca e, sendo bioindicadores, hospedeiros intermediários de parasitas e pragas, ocupam uma posição-chave no ecossistema. Existem três espécies do gênero Physa, ou seja, P. fontinalis, Physa acuta e P. gyrina em corpos d’água do Punjab Central e foram caracterizadas com base em marcadores moleculares. Alto nível de diversidade genética foi revelado por RAPD polimórfico, no entanto os marcadores SSR não foram amplificados. A análise multivariada revelou polimorfismo variando de 9,09% a 50% entre as três espécies de Physid. Um número total de 79 loci foi observado para as três espécies em estudo e 24 loci foram observados como polimórficos. Esses fragmentos RAPD podem ser desenvolvidos em marcadores codominantes (SCAR) por clonagem e podem ser posteriormente sequenciados para o desenvolvimento de marcadores específicos da espécie Physa para identificar as espécies introduzidas e nativas no Paquistão.

La Trobe University Faculty of Science, Technology and Engineering Murray Darling Freshwater Research CentreMDFRC item.The development and demise of substantial populations of bacteriochlorophyll (BChl) a and d containing phototrophs are documented within the bottom waters of a billabong (oxbow lake) in south-eastern Australia. The observation of such populations within a freshwater body is unusual, illustrating an unexpected source of organic carbon within the floodplain ecosystem of one of Australia's principal rivers. Values of up to 1086 µg L−1 BChl a and 490 µg L−1 BChl d were recorded during an 11 month study of physico-chemical parameters, algae and bacteria. An unusual density stratification was observed within the billabong, fostered by an increase in bivalent ions at depth, and leading to persistent anoxia below 0.75 m depth over summer. A marked vertical distribution was observed for both algae and bacteria, that for the bacteria being lost with a mixing event in late March. The presence of up to 74 µg L−1 BChl a at the surface of the billabong during the summer months is ascribed to entrainment of bacteria within bubble plumes rising from the sediments.

Wetland ecosystems are the most important natural sources of methane (CH4), with periodical changes of CH4 fluxes observed. Methanogens and methanotrophs are considered as the key factors affecting CH4 fluxes in wetlands. However, the relationship between methanogens and methanotrophs was still unclear. To close this gap, samples at four depths of soil in the Dajiuhu subalpine peatland in January, April, July, and October 2019 were collected and CH4 fluxes data from the eddy covariance (EC) system was acquired. The phylogenetic molecular ecological networks (pMENs) analysis was used to identify keystone species and the seasonal variations of co-occurrence patterns of methanogenic and methanotrophic communities. The results indicated that the seasonal variations of interactions between methanogenic and methanotrophic communities contributed to CH4 emissions in wetland. The keystone species discerned by network analysis also showed their importance in mediating CH4 fluxes. CH4 emissions in wetland were lowest in spring, during this period, most complex interactions between microbes were observed, with the intense competition among methanogens while methanotrophs represented better cooperation. Reverse patterns manifested in summer, when the highest CH4 flux was observed. Meanwhile, Methanoregula formicica was proven negatively correlated with CH4 fluxes that occupied largest ecological niches in the spring network, and Methanocella arvoryzae, as well as Methylocystaceae had positive correlations with CH4 fluxes survived better in the microbial community in summer. In addition, soil temperature and nitrogen were regarded as significant environmental factors to CH4 fluxes. This study explained the seasonal patterns and microbial driving mechanisms of CH4 emissions in wetlands.

Dokdo, a group of oceanic islands located in the East Sea near Ulleungdo Island, Korea, has great biological and ecological diversity. The ecosystem of Dokdo is considered unique because the oceanic climate differs from that of mainland Korea, and the islands have remained isolated for an extended period due to their geographic features. Biological surveys of insects were conducted five times on Dongdo and twice on Seodo in 2019 and 2020. From these surveys, we could find a total of ten orders, 82 families, and 190 species of insects, including two newly described species: Geocoris (Geocoris) pallidipennis (Costa) (Hemiptera: Lygaeidae) and Tephrochlamys japonica (Okadome) (Diptera: Heleomyzidae). These survey results suggest that Dokdo is very important from both academic and conservation perspectives. Establishing a complete database of Dokdo insects will require continued investigations. Such a database would provide basic information for inferring correlations with mainland species.

Largely understudied, mesophotic coral ecosystems lie below shallow reefs (at30 m depth) and comprise ecologically distinct communities. Brooding reproductive modes appear to predominate among mesophotic-specialist corals and may limit genetic connectivity among populations. Using reduced representation genomic sequencing, we assessed spatial population genetic structure at 50 m depth in an ecologically important mesophotic-specialist species Agaricia grahamae, among locations in the Southern Caribbean. We also tested for hybridisation with the closely related (but depth-generalist) species Agaricia lamarcki, within their sympatric depth zone (50 m). In contrast to our expectations, no spatial genetic structure was detected between the reefs of Curaçao and Bonaire (~40 km apart) within A. grahamae. However, cryptic taxa were discovered within both taxonomic species, with those in A. lamarcki (incompletely) partitioned by depth and those in A. grahamae occurring sympatrically (at the same depth). Hybrid analyses and demographic modelling identified contemporary and historical gene flow among cryptic taxa, both within and between A. grahamae and A. lamarcki. These results (1) indicate that spatial connectivity and subsequent replenishment may be possible between islands of moderate geographic distances for A. grahamae, an ecologically important mesophotic species, (2) that cryptic taxa occur in the mesophotic zone and environmental selection along shallow to mesophotic depth gradients may drive divergence in depth-generalists such as A. lamarcki, and (3) highlight that gene flow links taxa within this relativity diverse Caribbean genus.

Studies on the impact of ocean acidification on marine organisms involve exposing organisms to future acidification scenarios as projected for open ocean, which has limited relevance for coastal calcifiers. Characterization of reaction norms across a range of pH and identification of tipping points beyond which detrimental effects are observed has been limited and focus on only a few macro-physiological traits. Here we filled this knowledge gap by developing a framework to analyze the broad macro-physiological and molecular responses over a wide pH range of juvenile Pacific oyster, a model species for which the tolerance threshold to acidification remains unknown. We identify low tipping points for physiological traits at pH 7.3-6.9 that coincide with a major reshuffling in membrane lipids and transcriptome. In contrast, shell parameters exhibit effects with pH drop well before tipping points, likely impacting animal fitness. These findings were made possible by the development of an innovative methodology to synthesize and identify the main patterns of variations in large -omic datasets, fit them to pH and identify molecular tipping-points. We propose the application of our framework broadly to the assessment of effects of global change on other organisms.

Water pollution caused by heavy metals poses a serious threat to the ecosystem and human survival safety and becomes a major obstacle to human health, economic and socially sustainable development. Among the various treatment techniques for water remediation, adsorption is an efficient method due to its high capacity, low cost, and simplicity. Thallium (Tl) is highly toxic to mammals and its removal from water is gaining increasingly prominent attention. In this study, three fungal strains (Fusarium sp. FP, Arthrinium sp. FB and Phoma sp. FR) were tested for removal of Tl(I) from an aqueous solution and showed excellent removal performance. The prepared inactive fungal strains were characterized by XRD, FT-IR, SEM, and XPS analysis. The effects of pH, contact time, biomass and reaction temperature on the removal efficiency of Tl(I) were systematically investigated. The results indicated that the adsorption isotherm data fit well with the Langmuir model, and the pseudo-second-order model was more consistent with the kinetic data description. The maximum adsorption capacity of the fungal strain (Fusarium sp. FP, Arthrinium sp. FB and Phoma sp. FR) for Tl(I) was found to be 94.69 mg/g, 66.97 mg/g and 52.98 mg/g, respectively. The thermodynamic data showed that the sorption process was spontaneous and endothermic. The present study showed that the inactive fungal strains could be a promising adsorbent material for Tl(I) removal.

The arrival of invasive plants can cause drastic changes to ecosystems, such as the displacement of native plant communities and the disruption of ecological functions. Ligustrum lucidum W.T. Aiton is an invasive tree species that has been registered in numerous regions worldwide. We analysed the effect of the expansion of L. lucidum on the edaphic properties and mycorrhizal fungal communities in forests of Celtis tala Gillies ex Planch. located in central–western Argentina. Sampling sites were established along a gradient of invasion, in which we measured the forest structure and soil physicochemical factors and identified the fungal species using morphological techniques. The analysis of the variance revealed severe changes in the tree structure and a decrease in the concentrations of organic matter and nitrogen in the invaded sites. Thirty-two Glomeromycota species were identified, belonging to six families. The abundance of Dentiscutata cerradensis decreased with the invasion, whereas Funneliformis mosseae and Septoglomus constrictum increased. The alpha diversity of the arbuscular mycorrhizal communities showed no differences between sites. The beta diversity decreased at invaded sites, indicating a tendency towards convergence and reduced variability in these communities in the presence of the exotic species.

The stinging catfish, Heteropneustes fossilis (Bloch, 1974) is a commercially important fish species in Asia. This is an important food fish as is enriched with high amounts of protein, iron and calcium. The current research demonstrates the population structure, size at sexual maturity, spawning- and peak-spawning season and fecundity of H. fossilis in an important wetland ecosystem - Gajner Beel in northwestern Bangladesh with an aim of its sustainable conservation through induced breeding and aquaculture practices. A total of 426 stinging catfish captured from the Gajner Beel through monthly sampling from January to December 2019 used in the study. Total length (TL), standard length (SL) and body weight (BW) of individual fishes were measured. The size ranges were with 6.70–24.10 cm TL, 1.37–83.94 g BW. Gonads were removed carefully through ventral dissection and weighted. Lm was 14.02, 13.5, 13.0 and 15.0 cm based on maximum length (Lmax), TL vs. GSI (%), TL vs. SL and logistic model, respectively. Monthly variations of GSI and maturation stages were confirmed in April to August as spawning season and June as peak spawning month. Fulton’s condition factor (KF) was found to be with significant relations with GSI values. Fecundity was 1,730 to 23,870 and significantly correlated with both TL and BW. Temperature has been increasing 0.029 °C/year with the falling of rainfall at 2.96 mm/year in the study area. Environmental factors -Temperature, rainfall, dissolved oxygen and pH were found to be significantly correlated with GSI. We found the optimal range of temperature (29–31 °C), rainfall (350–380 mm), dissolved oxygen (5.0–6.0 mg/l) and pH (7.1–7.5) for spawning of H. fossilis. The paper recommended the policy guidelines to pave the ways of the aquaculture, conservation and management of H. fossilis in the changing eco-climatic events through specific management measures.

We measured the concentrations of Cr, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb and Hg, and the stable isotope ratios (δ13C and δ15N) in 87 fish samples within 12 economic fish species collected from the Dongting Lake, the second largest freshwater lake in China. With few exceptions in concentration of Cr, most of fish species showed lower concentrations of the 8 metals than legislation thresholds. Piscivorous fishes had significantly higher values of δ15N (possessing higher trophic level) and metal concentrations than planktivorous and herbivorous fishes. Moreover, demersal fishes showed higher concentrations of Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb than pelagic and benthopelagic fishes. We found positive correlations between concentrations of Fe, Pb and Hg and δ15N ratio, confirming the biomagnification of the three metals through trophic transfer. In contrast, fishes showed clear growth dilution effect for Ni, Zn, Cu, Pb and Hg, indicated by the negative correlations between their concentrations and fish weight or length. Multiple regression analysis demonstrated that growth dilution and biomagnification effects simultaneously governed the metal concentrations in fish muscle, and the two effects' importance varied among different metals. The human health risk assessment indicated that all 8 metals gave target hazard quotient (THQ) values

The pearlside Maurolicus stehmanni is one of the most abundant mesopelagic fishes off southeastern Brazil and plays a key role in the regional ecosystem. However, its early life history remains poorly understood. This study examined the M. stehmanni early life stages, from eggs to juveniles, including all developmental changes in external morphology. Larvae are simple in morphology and lack specialised larval structures. Notochord flexion begins at ~ 5.15 mm BL and larvae ≥ 5.95 mm BL are flexed. The relative growth of seven measured larval characters (head length, body depth, snout length, eye diameter, pre-dorsal length, pre-ventral length, and pre-anal length) have transition points (allometric inflexion points), indicating biphasic growth patterns which are likely related to shifts in habitat use, feeding, and behaviour. Larval development is similar to that of other Maurolicus species. The relatively fast development of the fins, photophores, swimbladder, and pigmentation suggests a precocious adoption of a micronektonic lifestyle in the mesopelagic environment. The blenniids of the genus Scartichthys are one of the most common fishes of Central and South American Pacific coastal reefs. This being said, Scartichthys spp. remain difficult to identify in the field, and identification is particularly challenging across the c. 6000 km where three of the four currently accepted species are known to occur in sympatry. A reason for this is that the main taxonomic characters from traditional taxonomy are indeed elusive. In addition, at the same time, species can display multiple colour patterns in the field, depending on their ontogenetic stage, habitat association and reproductive behaviour. Overall, molecular characterization is warranted to help address these issues. In this study, the authors have used a novel approach to revise the genus by combining colouration, morphological and molecular data of representative specimens of the four currently valid species and seven described colour patterns. From this, the authors show that only three of the four species should be considered as valid; Scartichthys gigas (Steindachner, 1876), Scartichthys variolatus (Valenciennes, 1836) and Scartichthys viridis (Valenciennes, 1836), whereas Scartichthys crapulatus (Williams, 1990) should be synonymized with S. viridis. In the same way, the analyses in this study show that one of the colour patterns attributed so far only to S. gigas is characteristic of the juvenile stages of S. viridis. The time-calibrated phylogeny of this study shows that this genus is relatively young and that the estimated time of divergence between S. gigas and S. viridis is c. 1.71 Ma. In comparison, the Desventuradas and Juan Fernandez Islands endemic S. variolatus diverged c. 1.95 Ma. The results of this study help to clarify the taxonomy of Scartichthys.

The longlegged ant (Anoplolepis gracilipes) is one of the most damaging invasive tramp ants globally. It is generally found between latitudes 27°N and 27°S in Asia, although it has been introduced to other continents. Its native range remains debatable, but it is believed to be in Southeast Asia. Anoplolepis gracilipes invasion has many serious ecological consequences, especially for native invertebrate, vertebrate, and plant communities, altering ecosystem dynamics and functions. We examine and synthesize the literature about this species' origin and distribution, impacts on biodiversity and ecosystems, biology and ecology, chemical control, and potential biocontrol agents. We highlight emerging research needs on the origin and invasion history of this species, its reproductive mode, its relationship with myrmecophiles, and its host-microbial interactions, and we discuss future research directions. Marine bacterial community plays a vital role in the formation of the hypoxia zone in coastal oceans. Yet, their dynamics in the seasonal hypoxia zone of the Bohai Sea (BHS) are barely studied. Here, the 16S rRNA gene-based high-throughput sequencing was used to explore the dynamics of their diversity, structure, and function as well as driving factors during the gradual deoxygenation process in the BHS. Our results evinced that the bacterial community was dominated by Proteobacteria, followed by Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, Actinobacteria, and Cyanobacteria, etc. The abundant subcommunity dominated in the number of sequences (49%) while the rare subcommunity dominated in the number of species (99.61%). Although abundant subcommunity accounted for most sequences, rare subcommunity possessed higher diversity, richness and their population dramatically changed (higher turnover) during the hypoxia transition. Further, co-occurrence network analysis proved the vital role of rare subcommunity in the process of community assembly. Additionally, beta diversity partition revealed that both subcommunities possessed a higher turnover component than nestedness and/or richness component, implying species replacement could explain a considerable percentage of community variation. This variation might be governed by both environmental selection and stochastic processes, and further, it influenced the nitrogen cycle (PICRUSt-based prediction) of the hypoxia zone. Overall, this study provides insight into the spatial-temporal heterogeneity of bacterial and their vital role in biogeochemical cycles in the hypoxia zone of the BHS. These findings will extend our horizons about the stabilization mechanism, feedback regulation, and interactive model inside the bacterial community under oxygen-depleted ecosystems.

A comprehensive understanding of mechanisms of allelopathy and resource availability is critical for protecting rare and endangered species, biodiversity, and ecosystems. We treated 20 major plant species with three concentrations of an aqueous extract of Dacrydium pierrei Hickel litter and different irrigation and nutrients to compare the relative importance of allelopathy and resource availability on roots, stem growth, and seed germination, using bioassays. The results showed that the height, ground diameter, and aboveground biomass of individuals increased more quickly in the early stage, and the rate of increase tended to slow down in the later stages. The allelopathy was species specific (inhibitory, neutral, or promotive), and the survival rate and growth rate of saplings changed significantly along a resource treatment gradient (P < 0.05), indicating that the native species diversity was reduced by lower or higher resource availability in natural forests. The effect of allelopathy on trees was relatively weak during the treatments, and that of resource availability was relatively strong. Resource availability is relatively more important than allelopathy in mediating the reduction in plant biodiversity. Therefore, water and nutrient availability and the species and number of allelochemicals released by plants have substantial influences on the survival and growth of plant species in a natural Dacrydium forest.

Covering 1989 to 2020The mangrove forests are a complex ecosystem occurring at tropical and subtropical intertidal estuarine zones and nourish a diverse group of microorganisms including fungi, actinomycetes, bacteria, cyanobacteria, algae, and protozoa. Among the mangrove microbial community, mangrove associated fungi, as the second-largest ecological group of the marine fungi, not only play an essential role in creating and maintaining this biosphere but also represent a rich source of structurally unique and diverse bioactive secondary metabolites, attracting significant attention of organic chemists and pharmacologists. This review summarizes the discovery relating to the source and characteristics of metabolic products isolated from mangrove-associated fungi over the past thirty years (1989-2020). Its emphasis included 1387 new metabolites from 451 papers, focusing on bioactivity and the unique chemical diversity of these natural products.

Many modelling approaches have been developed to project climate change impacts on forests. By analysing 'comparable' yet distinct variables (e.g. productivity, growth, dominance, biomass, etc.) through different structures, parameterizations and assumptions, models can yield different outcomes to rather similar initial questions. This variability can lead to some confusion for forest managers when developing strategies to adapt forest management to climate change. In this study, we standardized results from seven different models (Habitat suitability, trGam, StandLEAP, Quebec Landscape Dynamics, PICUS, LANDIS-II and LPJ-LMfire) to provide a simple and comprehensive assessment of the uncertainty and consensus in future performance (decline, status quo, improvement) for six tree species in Quebec under two radiative forcing scenarios (RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5). Despite a large diversity of model types, we found a high level of agreement (73.1%) in projected species' performance across species, regions, scenarios and time periods. Low agreements in model outcomes resulted from small dissensions among models. Model agreement was much higher for cold-tolerant species (up to 99.9%), especially in southernmost forest regions and under RCP 8.5, indicating that these species are especially sensitive to increased climate forcing in the southern part of their distribution range. Lower agreement was found for thermophilous species (sugar maple, yellow birch) in boreal regions under RCP 8.5 mostly as a result of the way the different models are handling natural disturbances (e.g. wildfires) and lags in the response of populations (forest inertia or migration capability) to climate change. Agreement was slightly higher under high anthropogenic climate forcing, suggesting that important thresholds in species-specific performance might be crossed if radiative forcing reach values as high as those projected under RCP 8.5. We expect that strong agreement among models despite their different assumptions, predictors and structure should inspire the development of forest management strategies to be better adapted to climate change.

Pollinators are the key point for successful pollination in most flowering plants around regions where around 90% depend entirely on pollination. Majority of the pollinating species are wild, comprising bees, certain species of flies, wasps, moths, butterflies, thrips, beetles, bats, birds and other vertebrates, and among them insect pollinators are the most crucial. Fruit crops benefit in an impressive way from insect pollination, where there is a remarkable improvement both in the productivity and the quality of self-fertilized, self-incompatible and cross-cropping crops worldwide. The pollinators are responsible for assisting these flowering plants with their reproduction. However, the crisis of the wild and managed pollinators has attracted the attention of the world, which could seriously disrupt pollination activities and the ecosystem. Despite the growing concern about the decline in pollinators worldwide, issues remain uncertain as data are often limited and undermined. Guava Psidium guajava is a marketable fruit culture in numerous tropical and subtropical regions around the world. There has been a growing interest in pollination studies on guava because of its great economic importance. In guava, self-pollination is evident, however, they benefit greatly from insect pollination. This article aims to provide an overview of tropical pollination and pollination problems that have occurred around the world with a focus on pollination activities in guava.

The rapid invasion of the non-native Phragmites australis (Poaceae, subfamily Arundinoideae) is a major threat to native wetland ecosystems in North America and elsewhere. We describe the first reference genome for P. australis and compare invasive (ssp. australis) and native (ssp. americanus) genotypes collected from replicated populations across the Laurentian Great Lakes to deduce genomic bases driving its invasive success. Here, we report novel genomic features including a Phragmites lineage-specific whole genome duplication, followed by gene loss and preferential retention of genes associated with transcription factors and regulatory functions in the remaining duplicates. Comparative transcriptomic analyses revealed that genes associated with biotic stress and defence responses were expressed at a higher basal level in invasive genotypes, but native genotypes showed a stronger induction of defence responses when challenged by a fungal endophyte. The reference genome and transcriptomes, combined with previous ecological and environmental data, add to our understanding of mechanisms leading to invasiveness and support the development of novel, genomics-assisted management approaches for invasive Phragmites.

Biological invasions are a major driver of biodiversity loss and socioeconomic burden globally. As invasion rates accelerate worldwide, understanding past invasion dynamics is essential to inform predictions of future invaders and impacts. Owing to a high diversity of pathways and current biosecurity gaps, aquatic systems near urban centres are especially susceptible to alien species establishments. Here, we compiled and compared alien species lists for three different aquatic recipient regions spanning the North Atlantic: Chesapeake Bay, Great Lakes-St. Lawrence River and North and Baltic Seas. Each system is a major trade centre, with a history of invasions, and characterised by a strong natural salinity gradient. Our goal was to compare the alien species across systems, to test for similarities in the taxonomic composition and geographic origin as well as species overlap among the three regions. We selected specific macroinvertebrate, algae and fish taxa for analysis, to control for uneven taxonomic and biogeographic resolution across regions. Cumulatively, we identified 326 individual alien species established in these aquatic systems, with the North and Baltic Seas most invaded overall (163), followed by Great Lakes-St. Lawrence River (84) and Chesapeake Bay (79). Most invasions were from Ponto-Caspian, Eurasian, Northwest Pacific, Northwest Atlantic and North American origins, and mostly comprised Arthropoda, Chordata, Mollusca and Annelida. However, origins and taxonomies differed significantly among destinations, with Ponto-Caspian species particularly successful invaders to the North and Baltic Seas then Great Lakes-St. Lawrence River, but less so to Chesapeake Bay. Nevertheless, approximately eight tenths of invaders established in only one region, indicating disparate invasion patterns and a high potential for future aliens to accrue from increasingly diverse source pools and pathways. These results support biosecurity strategies that consider a broad range of geographic origins and taxonomic groups to limit the translocation, arrival and spread of alien species worldwide.

Anarhichas lupus is a boreo-Arctic species with biological characteristics often associated with vulnerability to over-exploitation. Although not commercially targeted in the North Sea, A. lupus is a bycatch species in mixed demersal fisheries. Here we provide an overview of the status of A. lupus in the North Sea, as observed from commercial landings and fishery-independent trawl survey data. A. lupus was once common across much of the central and northern North Sea but, since the 1980s, have declined in abundance, demographic characteristics (reduced size) and geographical range, with the shallower and more southerly parts of its range most impacted. A. lupus is still relatively frequent in the northern North Sea, where fishing intensity, though decreasing, is high. Bycatch through fishing remains a potential threat and, considering the likely impacts of predicted climate change on cold-water species, risks of further regional depletion and/or range contraction remain. Whether or not A. lupus is able to re-establish viable populations in former habitat in UK coastal waters is unknown. Given the lack of data, the precautionary principle would suggest that manageable pressures be minimised where the species and its habitat are at risk of further impacts, and more regular assessments of population status be undertaken. Ectomycorrhizal symbiosis is essential for the nutrition of most temperate forest trees and helps regulate the movement of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) through forested ecosystems. The factors governing the exchange of plant C for fungal N, however, remain obscure. Because competition and soil resources may influence ectomycorrhizal resource movement, we performed a 10-month split-root microcosm study using Pinus muricata seedlings with Thelephora terrestris, Suillus pungens, or no ectomycorrhizal fungus, under two N concentrations in artificial soil. Fungi competed directly with roots and indirectly with each other. We used stable isotope enrichment to track plant photosynthate and fungal N. For T. terrestris, plants received N commensurate with the C given to their fungal partners. Thelephora terrestris was a superior mutualist under high-N conditions. For S. pungens, plant C and fungal N exchange were not coupled. However, in low-N conditions, plants preferentially allocated C to S. pungens rather than T. terrestris. Our results suggest that ectomycorrhizal resource transfer depends on competitive and nutritional context. Plants can exchange C for fungal N, but coupling of these resources can depend on the fungal species and soil N. Understanding the diversity of fungal strategies, and how they change with environmental context, reveals mechanisms driving this important symbiosis.

The relative role of hybridization, de novo evolution, and standing variation in weed adaptation to agricultural environments is largely unknown. In Amaranthus tuberculatus, a widespread North American agricultural weed, adaptation is likely influenced by recent secondary contact and admixture of two previously isolated lineages. We characterized the extent of adaptation and phenotypic differentiation accompanying the spread of A. tuberculatus into agricultural environments and the contribution of ancestral divergence. We generated phenotypic and whole-genome sequence data from a manipulative common garden experiment, using paired samples from natural and agricultural populations. We found strong latitudinal, longitudinal, and sex differentiation in phenotypes, and subtle differences among agricultural and natural environments that were further resolved with ancestry inference. The transition into agricultural environments has favoured southwestern var. rudis ancestry that leads to higher biomass and treatment-specific phenotypes: increased biomass and earlier flowering under reduced water availability, and reduced plasticity in fitness-related traits. We also detected de novo adaptation in individuals from agricultural habitats independent of ancestry effects, including marginally higher biomass, later flowering, and treatment-dependent divergence in time to germination. Therefore, the invasion of A. tuberculatus into agricultural environments has drawn on adaptive variation across multiple timescales-through both preadaptation via the preferential sorting of var. rudis ancestry and de novo local adaptation. Multilevel society is one of the most complex social systems in natural ecosystems and is a typical feature among some primates. Given the potential connection between social behavior and gut microbiome composition, the multilevel social system could affect the primate gut microbiome. Here, based on long-term observation (e.g., social unit dynamics, transfer, and behavior), we investigated this potential integrating 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing and behavior data in Yunnan snub-nosed monkeys (Rhinopithecus bieti), which possess a multilevel social group based on one male units (OMUs, each unit with several breeding females and their offspring) and all-male unit (AMU, several bachelor males residing together). We found that the mean unweighted Unifrac distance between adult males from different OMUs was significantly lower than that between adult females from different OMUs (paired Wilcoxon test, p = 0.007). There was no significant difference in the mean unweighted Unifrac distance between females within the same OMU or between females from different OMUs. These findings indicated the potential connection between the defense and invasion of social units and the gut microbiome community in wild Yunnan snub-nosed monkeys. We speculated that the resident males of OMUs displayed a significantly higher similarity in the gut microbial community than that of adult females in separate OMUs might be associated with the sexual differences in their interactions and from previously having cohabitated together in the AMU. Therefore, this study suggested that multilevel societies might have an effect on the gut microbial community in this wild non-human primate species. This article is protected by copyright. Nitrifying chemoautotrophs support the growth of diverse concomitant heterotrophs in natural or engineered environments by supplying organic compounds. In this study, we aimed to investigate this microbial association, especially (i) to distinguish whether the relationship between nitrifying chemoautotrophs and heterotrophs is commensal or mutualistic, and (ii) to clarify how heterotrophs promote the growth of autotrophic nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (Nitrospira). Pure cultured Nitrospira (Nitrospira sp. ND1) was employed in this study. Heterotrophs growing with metabolic by-products of Nitrospira as a sole carbon source were isolated from several environmental samples and used to test the growth-promoting activity of Nitrospira. Furthermore, liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis was conducted to evaluate how heterotrophs consumed chemical compounds produced by Nitrospira and newly produced during co-cultivation. Notably, Nitrospira growth was stimulated by co-cultivation with some heterotrophs and the addition of spent media of some strains, suggesting that not only heterotrophs but also Nitrospira received benefits from their mutual co-existence. Furthermore, the data suggested that some of the growth-promoting heterotrophs provided as-yet-unidentified growth-promoting factors to Nitrospira. Overall, Nitrospira and heterotrophs thus appear to exhibit a mutualistic relationship. Such mutualistic relationships between autotrophs and heterotrophs would contribute to the stability and diversity of microbial ecosystems.

Key Message Endophytes are crucial for the promotion of rice growth and stress tolerance and can be used to increase rice crop yield. Endophytes can thus be exploited in biotechnology and genetic engineering as eco-friendly and cost-effective means for the development of high-yielding and stress-tolerant rice plants. Abstract Rice (Oryza sativa) crop is continuously subjected to biotic and abiotic stresses, compromising growth and consequently yield. The situation is exacerbated by climate change impacting on ecosystems and biodiversity. Genetic engineering has been used to develop stress-tolerant rice, alongside physical and chemical methods to mitigate the effect of these stresses. However, the success of these strategies has been hindered by short-lived field success and public concern on adverse effects associated. The limited success in the field of stress-tolerant cultivars developed through breeding or transgenic approaches is due to the complex nature of stress tolerance as well as to the resistance breakdown caused by accelerated evolution of pathogens. It is therefore necessary to develop novel and acceptable strategies to enhance rice stress tolerance and durable resistance and consequently improve yield. In the last decade, plant growth promoting (PGP) microbes, especially endophytes, have drawn the attention of agricultural scientists worldwide, due to their ability to mitigate environmental stresses in crops, without causing adverse effects. Increasing evidence indicates that endophytes effectively confer fitness benefits also to rice under biotic and abiotic stress conditions. Endophyte-produced metabolites can control the expression of stress-responsive genes and improve the physiological performance and growth of rice plants. This review highlights the current evidence available for PGP microbe-promoted tolerance of rice to abiotic stresses such as salinity and drought and to biotic ones, with special emphasis on endophytes. Associated molecular mechanisms are illustrated, and prospects for sustainable rice production also in the light of the impending climate change, discussed.

Background To determine the presence and abundance of an aquatic species in large waterbodies, especially when populations are at low densities, is highly challenging for conservation biologists. Environmental DNA (eDNA) has the potential to offer a noninvasive and cost-effective method to complement traditional population monitoring, however, eDNA has not been extensively applied to study large migratory species. Chinese sturgeon (Acipenser sinensis), is the largest anadromous migratory fish in the Yangtze River, China, and in recent years its population has dramatically declined and spawning has failed, bringing this species to the brink of extinction. In this study, we aim to test the detectability of eDNA methods to determine the presence and relative abundance of reproductive stock of the species and whether eDNA can be used as a tool to reflect behavioral patterns. Chinese sturgeon eDNA was collected from four sites along the spawning ground across an eight month period, to investigate the temporal and spatial distribution using droplet digital PCR (ddPCR). Results We designed a pair of specific primers for Chinese sturgeon and demonstrated the high sensitivity of ddPCR to detect and quantify the Chinese sturgeon eDNA concentration with the limit of detection 0.17 copies/μl, with Chinese sturgeon eDNA been intermittently detected at all sampling sites. There was a consistent temporal pattern among four of the sampling sites that could reflect the movement characteristics of the Chinese sturgeon in the spawning ground, but without a spatial pattern. The eDNA concentration declined by approximately 2–3 × between December 2018 and December 2019. Conclusions The results prove the efficacy of eDNA for monitoring reproductive stock of the Chinese sturgeon and the e decreased eDNA concentration reflect that Chinese sturgeon may survive with an extremely small number of reproductive stock in the Yangtze River. Accordingly, we suggest future conservation measures should focus on both habitat restoration and matured fish restocking to ensure successful spawning. Overall, this study provides encouraging support for the application of eDNA methods to monitor endangered aquatic species.

Comprehension of the benefits involved in mutualisms is crucial to disentangle the role of interactions in the structure and functioning of populations, communities and ecosystems. In ant-plant mutualisms, benefits provided by plants to ants are immediately recognizable, but reverse benefits are less obvious, conditional and accumulate over longer time spans. Here we tested the hypothesis that the ant Azteca muelleri simultaneously provides multiple benefits to its host plant (Cecropia glaziovii), ultimately increasing plant performance. We planted seedlings and experimentally prevented ant colonization for half of them. Over 4.5 years we quantified the effects of ant presence or absence on plant growth, herbivory levels, fungal infection, fertilization via ant debris and changes in defense strategies. Ant colonization increased plant height by 125% compared to ant-free plants. Such an improvement in plant performance can be explained because plants with ants faced less herbivory, lower prevalence of pathogenic fungi, invested less in foliar trichomes and had more foliar nitrogen. We thus confirmed that ant mutualists provide cumulative benefits including nutritional benefits, effective defense and lower investment into other defenses – which result in increased plant growth. We highlight the importance of long-term experiments that simultaneously evaluate a multiplicity of potential ant effects to better understand their relative contribution to the performance of the mutualistic partner.

PREMISE The distribution of genetic diversity on the landscape has critical ecological and evolutionary implications. This may be especially the case on a local scale for foundation plant species since they create and define ecological communities, contributing disproportionately to ecosystem function. METHODS We examined the distribution of genetic diversity and clones, which we defined first as unique multilocus genotypes (MLG), and then by grouping similar MLGs into multilocus lineages (MLL). We used 186 markers from inter-simple sequence repeats (ISSR) across 358 ramets from 13 patches of the foundation grass Leymus chinensis. We examined the relationship between genetic and clonal diversities, their variation with patch-size, and the effect of the number of markers used to evaluate genetic diversity and structure in this species. RESULTS Every ramet had a unique MLG. Almost all patches consisted of individuals belonging to a single MLL. We confirmed this with a clustering algorithm to group related genotypes. The predominance of a single lineage within each patch could be the result of the accumulation of somatic mutations, limited dispersal, some sexual reproduction with partners mainly restricted to the same patch, or a combination of all three. CONCLUSIONS We found strong genetic structure among patches of L. chinensis. Consistent with previous work on the species, the clustering of similar genotypes within patches suggests that clonal reproduction combined with somatic mutation, limited dispersal, and some degree of sexual reproduction among neighbors causes individuals within a patch to be more closely related than among patches. Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a bacterium characterized for its low antibiotics' susceptibility, is one of the most relevant opportunistic pathogens, causing infections at hospitals and in cystic fibrosis patients. Besides its relevance for human health, P. aeruginosa colonizes environmental ecosystems; therefore the elements driving its infectivity and antibiotic resistance must be analyzed from a One-Health perspective. Although some epidemic clones have been described, there are not specific lineages linked to infections, suggesting that P. aeruginosa virulence and antibiotic resistance determinants evolved in nature to play functions other than infecting the human host and avoiding antimicrobial treatment. Herein, we review current information on the population structure of P. aeruginosa and on the functional role that its resistance and virulence determinants have in non-clinical ecosystems.

Odor problems in source water caused by 2-methylisoborneol (MIB) have been a common issue in China recently, posing a high risk to drinking water safety. The earthy-musty odorant MIB has an extremely low odor threshold (4–16 ng/L) and is hard to remove via conventional processes in drinking water plants (DWP), and therefore could easily provoke complaints from consumers. This compound is produced by a group of filamentous cyanobacteria, mainly belonging to Oscillatoriales. Different from the well-studied surface-blooming Microcystis, filamentous cyanobacteria have specific niche characteristics that allow them to stay at a subsurface or deep layer in the water column. The underwater bloom of these MIB producers is therefore passively determined by the underwater light availability, which is governed by the cell density of surface scum. This suggests that drinking water reservoirs with relatively low nutrient contents are not able to support surface blooms, but are a fairly good fit to the specialized ecological niche of filamentous cyanobacteria; this could explain the widespread odor problems in source water. At present, MIB is mainly treated in DWP using advanced treatment processes and/or activated carbon, but these post-treatment methods have high cost, and not able to deal with water containing high MIB concentrations. Thus, in situ control of MIB producers in source water is an effective complement and is desirable. Lowering the underwater light availability is a possible measure to control MIB producers according to their niche characteristics, which can be obtained by either changing the water level or other measures.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) contamination has a negative impact on ecosystems. PAHs are a large group of toxins with two or more benzene rings that are persistent in the environment. Some PAHs can be cytotoxic, teratogenic, and/or carcinogenic. In the bacterium Pseudomonas, PAHs can be modified by dioxygenases, which increase the reactivity of PAHs. We hypothesize that some plant dioxygenases are capable of PAH biodegradation. Herein, we investigate the involvement of Arabidopsis thaliana At1g14130 in the degradation of phenanthrene, our model PAH. The At1g14130 gene encodes Dioxygenase For Auxin Oxidation 1 (AtDAO1), an enzyme involved in the oxidative inactivation of the hormone auxin. Expression analysis using a β-glucuronidase (GUS) reporter revealed that At1g14130 is prominently expressed in new leaves of plants exposed to media with phenanthrene. Analysis of the oxidative state of gain-of-function mutants showed elevated levels of H2O2 after phenanthrene treatments, probably due to an increase in the oxidation of phenanthrene by AtDAO1. Biochemical assays with purified AtDAO1 and phenanthrene suggest an enzymatic activity towards the PAH. Thus, data presented in this study support the hypothesis that an auxin dioxygenase, AtDAO1, from Arabidopsis thaliana contributes to the degradation of phenanthrene and that there is possible toxic metabolite accumulation after PAH exposure.

In many northern ecosystems, mosses account for an important component of the plant community. Further, mosses host nitrogen (N2)-fixing bacteria that have been shown to contribute a large part of ‘new‘ N in pristine ecosystems. This study aimed to assess direct and indirect effects of warming on moss-associated N2 fixation. We assessed how N2 fixation activity at ecosystem- and at moss species-level is affected by direct (warming) and indirect (vegetation shift) climate change using two long-term field manipulation experiments in a subarctic birch forest combined with mesocosm studies from a close-by heath. We linked the abundance of ground covering mosses to N2 fixation activity and assessed the temperature sensitivity of N2 fixation in two common feather mosses, Hylocomium splendens and Pleurozium schreberi. Our study shows a steep decline in moss ground cover as well as in associated N2 fixation in response to 10 years of manipulated field-warming, whereas a shift in dominant shrub species did not impact moss cover or N2 fixation activity. Interestingly, the moss H. splendens was more sensitive than P. schreberi to warming both in terms of cover and N2 fixation activity. Our study shows that warming affects moss-associated N2 fixation activity negatively - both indirectly via a decline in moss cover and directly by reducing N2 fixation activity. This suggests lower N input via moss-associated N2 fixation in a future climate, which will consequently affect nutrient turnover and ecosystem productivity.

Bats provide important ecosystem services but face severe threats due to land and climate changes. Although bats are an important component of mammal diversity in Iran, the ecology of many species remains virtually unstudied in the country. Here we applied the maximum entropy approach to model habitat suitability of bat species in Iran, identify the most important variables for their distribution, predict high priority areas for field monitoring and conservation, and estimate the coverage of the bat species' suitable habitats by the existing protected areas. We created a richness map for the twelve species to identify high priority areas for field monitoring and conservation. The results of species distribution modeling showed that Pipistrellus kuhlii (828,977.2 km2) and Miniopterus pallidus (646,581.9 km2) had the largest distribution ranges and Rhinopoma microphyllum (211,202.7 km2) and Rousettus aegyptiacus (218,278.6 km2) had the smallest distribution ranges in Iran. By averaging the importance of each ecological variable across the 12 species, we found that distance to forests (with a negative association) is the most important ecological driver of bat distribution in Iran. The Zagros Mountains were identified as a hotspot of bats based on the distribution of the 12 species. Our findings showed that small proportions of each species suitable habitats were covered by protected areas and protected suitable habitats varied from 3.2%for Pipistrellus kuhlii to15.9% for Tadarida teniotis. This study highlights the importance of forests for bat conservation showing that forest conservation is a high priority in the country. Areas which have the highest richness should be prioritized for field monitoring and conservation.

Degradation of carrying capacity due to any reason is a serious concern for ecosystem as well as for dynamical system. It is observed in alpine meadow ecosystem that carrying capacity of vegetation reduces due to digging holes, throwing out soils, piling up mounds by plateau pika. In this ecosystem, it is also observed that height of vegetation increases death rate of plateau pika. These two facts when considered with environmental fluctuation make it an interesting topic of discussion in dynamical system. This motivation leads us to a stochastic analysis of a prey–predator model in alpine meadow ecosystem. In this analysis, Gaussian White noise has been introduced to exhibit the influence of environmental fluctuations on prey’s growth rate and predator’s death rate. We have established positivity and boundedness of the system theoretically. Extinction scenario, persistence of the system and global attractivity of solutions are also established. Numerical simulation validates theoretical results. Moreover, the appropriateness of the model in numerical simulation has also been justified with the help of some field experimental data. In discussion section, another approach for formulating the model has also been discussed.

Invasive alien nitrogen-fixing species, such as Australian acacias, often leave a legacy of elevated available soil nitrogen after their removal. This legacy effect can facilitate secondary invasion by other alien species, thereby preventing natural restoration of areas being managed. To restore viable native plant communities in ecosystems where secondary invasion is a barrier to restoration, it is important to understand the soil legacy effects of invasions. Using Acacia saligna (Labill.) H. L. Wendl. (Fabaceae) invasions in the South African fynbos as case study, we determined (1) the extent to which levels of available soil nitrogen influence the germination and growth of secondary invaders; and (2) how this differs between secondary invader species. We chose five of the most common species that have been identified as secondary invaders after clearing invasive A. saligna in the Cape Flats Sand Fynbos: (i) Avena fatua (L.) (Poaceae), (ii) Briza maxima (L.) (Poaceae), (iii) Bromus diandrus (Roth.) (Poaceae), (iv) Hypochaeris radicata (L.) (Asteraceae), and (v) Raphanus raphanistrum (L.) (Brassicaceae). Using proportional fertigation, we created soil nitrate levels similar to those found in non-invaded areas (1mg/kg), and the lowest (3 mg/kg), median (7.5 mg/kg) and highest (12 mg/kg) levels typically found in areas previously invaded by A. saligna up to ten years after clearing. For each soil nitrate level, we germinated secondary invader seeds (five seeds per petri dish) in an incubator (five species × four soil nitrate levels × five replicates = 100 petri dishes). Furthermore, for each soil nitrate level, we grew secondary invaders (one plant per pot) in a greenhouse tunnel for five months (five species × four soil nitrate levels × five replicates = 100 pots). There was no significant relationship between germination success and soil nitrate level for any species. However, root and shoot dry mass were significantly positively correlated to soil nitrate level for all species. The relationship was nonetheless only linear for Bromus diandrus, Hypochaeris radicata, and Raphanus raphanistrum. These results indicate that the legacy of elevated available soil nitrogen does not have an effect on the germination of secondary invaders, but favours their growth. Therefore, secondary invasion can be managed through a reduction in soil nitrogen levels. However, secondary invader growth does not decrease at the same rate for all species in response to a decrease in available soil nitrogen. Thus, the use of soil nitrogen reduction as a tool for the management of secondary invasions should take into account the species being managed. However, given that multiple secondary invader species often dominate a restoration site, restoration efforts should reduce soil nitrogen to non-invaded levels to account for the different response rates to available soil nitrogen, and simply management efforts.

Palm lethal decline phytoplasmas are an important group of plant pathogens that cause death in a variety of palm species throughout the Caribbean basin and the southeastern United States. The 16SrIV-D phytoplasma was introduced to the state of Florida, United States; it has since caused severe economic losses to the green industries of Florida and is threating natural ecosystems because of its ability to infect the native palm Sabal palmetto. In this study, the genetic variability of the 16SrIV-D phytoplasma was assessed over a 10-year period to determine if multiple introductions had occurred or if natural mutations were occurring. Furthermore, the genetic variability of the palm lethal decline phytoplasma group (16SrIV) was assessed with a multiple locus analysis using the 16S ribosomal RNA gene, the 16S-23S intergenic spacer region, and secA and groEL genes. Overall, no variability of the 16SrIV-D phytoplasma was documented in Florida over a 10-year period. The multilocus analysis showed support for three distinct species of the phytoplasma in the Caribbean basin that infect palms and further support that the 16SrIV-C from Tanzania is not closely related. Furthermore, 16SrIV-B and 16SrIV-D were found to be the same phytoplasma based on 100% identity between the two based on intergenic spacer region, secA, and groEL analysis. This study represents the first robust, multilocus analysis of palm-infecting phytoplasmas from the Caribbean and sheds light on the phylogeny and evolution of the group.

Spartina alterniflora (S. alterniflora) is a dominant invasive alien species that occurs in Yancheng Wetland National Nature Reserve, the largest coastal wetland in China. It expands rapidly and exerts great threats to local ecosystem. The main native species there are Phragmites australis (P. australis) and Suaeda salsa (S. salsa), respectively. In order to monitor their dynamics, it is of great significance to analyze their spectral discrimination. Canopy spectra of these typical species were measured in July and October in order to compare species differences, as well as the seasonal variation. The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) was calculated based on canopy spectra. An unprecedented study was carried out in a mangrove ecosystem in the northeastern coast of the Brazilian Amazon to understand the behavior of climatic elements in a year with the occurrence of El Niño (2015), associated with the seasonal function source/sink of CO2 by the ecosystem. Global radiation (Rg), net radiation (Rn), temperature, relative humidity, precipitation, horizontal wind speed and direction, as well as turbulent flows of sensible heat (H), latent heat (LE), and carbon (f_CO2) were recorded using eddy covariance, a system for studying turbulent flows of heat and gases in the atmosphere. We observed a drastic reduction in rainfall volumes, which accounts for 63.7% of the expected total according to the region’s climatology. Regarding f_ CO2, the highest values of photosynthesis, autotrophic, and heterotrophic respiration of the ecosystem occurred in the wet season due to precipitation, ideal photosynthetically active radiation, lower soil salinity, and higher NDVI of the ecosystem. In the 2nd semester of the year, we observed that the decrease in cloudiness, causing a higher radiation supply in the forest canopy, accompanied by a reduction in precipitation and an increase in the value of H and soil salinity, favored the increase of foliar abscission by the dominant genus Rhizophora and Avicennia, thus influencing the reduction of magnitudes of carbon source/sink functions in the ecosystem during this season, even on high tide days.
