Urban forest has undergone rapid development in China over the last three decades because of the acceleration of urbanization. Urban forest thus plays an increasingly important role in carbon sequestration at a regional and national scale. As one of the most urbanized cities in China, Shanghai showed an increase of forest coverage from 3% in the 1990s to 13% in 2009. Based on CITY-green model and the second soil survey of Shanghai, the forest biomass carbon (FBC) was estimated to be 0.48 Tg in the urban area and, forest soil organic carbon (SOC) (0-100 cm soil depth) is 2.48 Tg in the urban and suburban areas, respectively. These values are relatively within the median and lower level compared with other Chinese megacities, with the FBC of 0.02 Tg in Harbin to 47.29 Tg in Chongqing and the forest SOC of 1.74 Tg in Nanjing to 418.67 Tg in Chongqing. For the different land-use types in Shanghai, the SOC density ranges from 13.8 (tidal field) to 38.6 t ha (agricultural land). On average, the forest SOC density (31.5 t ha) in Shanghai is lower than that in agricultural lands (38.6 t ha) and higher than that in lawns (26.5 t ha) and gardens (21.3 t ha). In Shanghai, the SOC density in newly established urban parks is generally lower than that in older parks. In the northern and southeastern suburban areas (e.g., Baoshan, Yangpu, and Nanhui districts), greenspace SOC density is higher than that in the central commercial areas (Hongkou, Putuo, Changning, and Zhabei districts) and in newly developed district (Pudong District). Uncertainties still exist in the estimation of urban forest carbon in Shanghai, as well as in other Chinese cities. Thus, future research directions are also discussed in this paper. Quantifying the spatiotemporal distribution of forest biomass carbon (FBC) is vital for the management of urban forests in accordance with the rapid urbanization. This paper presents a method for quantifying and estimating the urban FBC in Shanghai, China, between 2005 and 2015, using data from 93 sampling forest plots and Landsat ETM + data. Our study included an analysis of the choice of predicted factors to estimate FBC and the method of carbon density estimation employed in the estimation. The results showed that combining regression analysis and spatial analysis to map forest carbon stocks at city level make available FBC estimates for the urban forests of Shanghai, China. Based on the proposal method, there was a decreasing trend of carbon density from downtown areas to outer suburban areas. About 92 % of the overall FBC storage in Shanghai distributed in the suburban areas whereas the urban areas shared a fraction amounting to only 8 % in 2015. From 2011–2015, the total urban forest carbon storage gradually increased by 32.3 %, whereas the average carbon density gradually decreased by 8.21 % in the urban areas. The associated values both increased continuously from 2005–2011, from 2005 to 2011, but the average carbon storage density decreased in the suburban districts. The total carbon stocks in the estimated forest biomass across Shanghai were about 1.5 Tg in 2005 and 2008, and 1.7 Tg in 2011 and 2015, while the associated average FBC density remained at about 17.5 t/ha from 2005 to 2015. Issues related to environmental degradation are of increasing concern worldwide. In urban Shanghai, many plant species used for ornamental purposes grow under harsh conditions yet show good resistance to pollution. Twelve shrub species were tested in a previous study to evaluate their capacity to tolerate and absorb inorganic contaminants. Among these, Hibiscus mutabilis and H. hamabo and Senna corymbosa, presented good performance and were tested over three growing seasons in a large experimental design (2000 m2) where the soil was spiked with salts of Cu, Pb, or Zn. Each year of the study, all plants were cut and biomass was harvested and analyzed. Despite the relatively high concentration of metals in plots, no signs of toxicity were observed. Concentrations of metals in root tissues were generally much higher than those found in aerial parts. The bioconcentration factor values were generally very low, but the high biomass yield produced by H. mutabilis led to significant removal of Cu and Zn. No difference in the quantity of Pb extracted was found between species. As these plants respond well to coppicing, it may be possible to gradually eliminate contaminants from soils. Weekly PM2.5 samples were collected for one year (1999-2000) in Beijing and Shanghai and the carbonaceous species analyzed to investigate and compare their time series patterns and possible sources in the two biggest cities of China. Weekly carbonaceous concentrations varied in wide ranges with 8.6-59 µ gm-3 for OC and 1.5- 25.4 µ gm-3 for EC in Beijing, and with 5.1-38.4 µ gm-3 for OC and 2.3-13.0 µ gm-3 for EC in Shanghai. Similar weekly and seasonal variations of OC and EC concentrations were found in each city though major combustion sources presented source-dependent emission characteristics and seasonal differences in emission amount for carbonaceous species. Both OC and EC maintained much higher concentrations in late fall through winter, probably due to enhanced emissions coupled with unfavorable meteorological conditions. In Beijing, the 14C analysis of limited samples suggested there was a significant contribution (33-48%) of modern carbon to the total fine carbonaceous PM burden with higher fractions in the harvest seasons. The high mass ratios of excessive potassium to EC in both Beijing and Shanghai also indicated that biomass burning had important contribution to fine carbonaceous particles. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
