Four biomass-based catalyst carriers with different pore structures were prepared by using a carbonization-activation method, followed by employment in the copyrolysis of Walnut Shell/Polypropylene (WNS/PP) to produce Benzene, Toluene and Xylene (BTX). Ten cycles were performed in each copyrolysis test in a bench-scaled tube furnace to determine the suitable pore size of the catalyst and excellent cycling performance for BTX production. In addition, Zn, Ni, and Ce were loaded with the selected catalyst carriers to synthesize the most suitable biomass-based catalyst. Results showed that the pore size and active center of the catalyst were the key factors affecting the WNS/PP catalytic copyrolysis. Biomass-based carrier with a pore size in the range of 0.55-1.2 nm was the most suitable to produce BTX in the optimal 10 cycle performance; it realized a relative BTX content of 9-20 area%, and a BTX mass yield of 23-67 mg/(graw) in the liquid-phase products from the WNS/PP copyrolysis. A catalyst loaded with 10 wt% Zn possessed the best catalytic effect with a relative BTX content of 39.49 area%, and a BTX yield of 111.13 mg/(graw).

A new generation of bioplatform molecule 5-ethoxymethylfurfural (EMF) has excellent energy density and combustion performance, which makes it a potential fuel additive. This article reviews the factors that affect the production of EMF from different feedstocks, including platform compounds, monosaccharides, polysaccharides, and raw lignocellulosic biomass. Focus is placed on discussing the catalytic efficiency with pros and cons of different acid catalysts, including homogeneous catalysts (i.e., liquid acids and metal salts), heterogeneous catalysts (i.e., zeolites, heteropolyacid-based hybrids, and SO3H-based catalysts), ionic liquids, mixed acid catalysts, and deep eutectic solvents (DESs). Except for the commonly used ethanol solvent, this review also summarizes the influence of the cosolvent system (e.g., ethanol/dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), ethanol/tetrahydrofuran (THF), and ethanol/γ-valerolactone (GVL)) on the EMF yield.

Biomass can be torrefied to improve the fuel quality prior to its utilization. In addition, a large number of soluble alkali metals can be removed by water washing, to solve slagging and other ash-related problems. In this study, computer-controlled scanning electron microscopy (CCSEM) was used to analyze the mineral composition and elemental distribution of straw, torrefied straw char, and torrefied-water washed straw char. The mineral transformation behavior and the distribution of main elements, when these biomass species were individually co-combusted with coal, were also studied in detail. The comparison of the mineral composition of bulk ash obtained from torrefied straw combustion and straw combustion revealed that the quartz phase decreased and the aluminosilicates of K-, Na-, and Ca–Fe–K increased in the former compared to that in the latter. After the torrefied straw was washed with water, the quartz and Si-Rich phases increased. K aluminosilicate decreased and the quartz phase increased when the torrefied sample was co-combusted with coal at both mixing ratios of 1:1 and 1:4 compared to straw/coal co-combustion. When the torrefied-water washing sample and coal were co-combusted at a 1:1 ratio, the quartz phase decreased, and the Si-Rich and mullite phases increased. When the straw/torrefied char/torrefied-washed char was co-fired with coal at the 1:4 ratio, the amount of K aluminosilicate was less compared to that observed at the 1:1 ratio. It can be concluded that both torrefaction and torrefaction-washing can reduce the content of low-melting-point aluminosilicates in the mineral composition of the studied biomass after co-combustion, which can be beneficial to alleviate the ash slagging problem.

In this study, co-gasification behaviors and synergistic interaction of bituminous coal and walnut shell under CO2 atmosphere were investigated by using a thermogravimetric analyzer. The evolution of physicochemical properties of samples was characterized with an inductively coupled plasma emission spectrometer, an X-ray fluorescence spectrometer, and an X-ray diffractometer. The results indicated that the addition of walnut shell significantly enhanced the gasification reactivity of coal, and coal/biomass blend ratio of 7:3 showed an intense gasification. Moreover, a significant co-gasification interaction was observed in the char gasification stage and demonstrated that a high coal/biomass blend ratio induced the formation of amorphous carbons and further accelerated the co-gasification reaction. Meanwhile, the active inorganics were severely released as 30 wt% bituminous coal added to walnut shell, causing a deteriorative gasification reactivity. Furthermore, three kinetic models illustrated that the coal/biomass blend ratio of 7:3 required a minimum activation energy to initialize gasification. The findings in this work would be beneficial for revealing the co-gasification mechanism of biomass and coal, and provide a useful basis on their multi-scale applications.

In order to produce high-quality bio-oils and syngas from biomass, a novel pyrolysis approach based on the chemical looping concept, namely chemical looping pyrolysis (CLPy), was proposed. In the current work, thermodynamic feasibility study and experimental investigations of the proposed CLPy with calcium-ferrite oxygen carriers and Nannochloropsis sp. microalgal biomass were conducted. The results suggested that the reduced calcium-ferrite oxygen carrier facilitated the denitrification, ketonization, and hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of bio-oils during the pyrolysis stage. Since large amounts of oxygen in bio-oils were transferred to the reduced oxygen carrier, the heating value of bio-oils was remarkably increased up to 34.2 MJ/kg and 36.0 MJ/kg by employing the reduced CaFe2O4 and Ca2Fe2O5 oxygen carrier, respectively. In addition, a high H2 content of 50% in the pyrolysis gas was observed at the optimal pyrolysis temperature. In the gasification stage, the production of high-quality syngas was achieved. The content of H2 accounted for up to 70% of the gasification products when taking steam as gasifying agent, while that of CO was composed of 66% without the use of a gasifying agent. Moreover, the oxygen carrier was reduced to its reduction state, available for the next loop. In summary, CLPy proposed in this work involves the continuous transference of the oxygen from bio-oils to syngas by an oxygen carrier and provides a brand-new approach for the comprehensive utilization of biomass.

Adsorption is considered to be a promising butanol recovery method for solving the issue of inhibition in the ABE (acetone-butanol-ethanol) fermentation. As a byproduct in the second generation biobutanol industry, lignin was found to be a good adsorbent for the butanol enrichment. It is conducive to the full utilization of renewable lignocellulose biomass resource. Kinetic and equilibrium experiments indicated that lignin had a satisfactory adsorption rate and capacity that are comparable to those of many synthetic materials. Multicomponent adsorption experiments revealed that lignin had higher adsorption selectivity toward butanol than that of ethanol and acetone. The adsorption capacity of lignin for butanol first increased and then gradually decreased with increasing temperature. And maximum adsorption capacity reached 304.66 mg g−1 at 313 K. The inflection point of temperature is close to the ABE fermentation temperature of 310 K. The condensed butanol by desorption was 145 g L−1, with a satisfying regeneration performance. 1H NMR and FT-IR spectra indicated that the aromatic units of lignin formed π-systems with A/B/E. The π-system is particularly significant for butanol due to its longer hydrocarbon chain. These results could contribute to the emerging lignin-based materials for butanol separation.

Fine roots (−1 a−1), low (5 kg ha−1 a−1), moderate (10 kg ha−1 a−1), and high nitrogen (20 kg ha−1 a−1)) on the biomass, morphological characteristics, chemical elements and nonstructural carbohydrates of fine roots in a Picea schrenkiana forest. We found that most fine roots were located in the 0–20 cm of soil layer across all nitrogen treatment groups (42.81–52.09% of the total biomass). Compared with the control, the biomass, specific root length and specific root area of the fine roots increased in the medium nitrogen treatment, whereas the fine roots biomass was lower in the high nitrogen treatment than in the other treatments. In fine roots, nitrogen addition promotes the absorption of nitrogen and phosphorus and their stoichiometric ratio, while reducing the content of nonstructural carbohydrates. Biomass chars are a major component of the soil environmental black carbon pool and prepared forms are a potentially useful tool in remediation. A function critical to the roles of both environmental and prepared chars is sorption of organic compounds. Char properties known to control sorption include surface area, porosity, functional group composition, and percent aromatic carbon. Here, we show that sorption affinity (but not maximum capacity) of organic compounds is directly related to the degree of condensation of the aromatic fraction. The Dubinin-Ashtakov characteristic sorption energy (EDA, kJ mol-1) of 22 compounds on a thermoseries of bamboo chars correlates strongly with the DP/MAS-13C NMR-determined bridgehead aromatic carbon fraction (χb), which relates to the mean ring cluster size. Density functional theory-computed binding energy (Ebd) for five of the compounds on a representative series of polybenzenoid hydrocarbon open-face sheets also correlates positively with χb, leveling off for rings larger than ∼C55. The Ebd, in turn, correlates strongly with EDA. An increase in Ebd with cluster size is also found for sorption, both monolayer and bilayer, between parallel sheets representing slit micropores. The increasing sorption energy with cluster size is shown to be due to increasing cluster polarizability, which strengthens dispersion forces with the sorbate. The findings underscore a previously overlooked explicit role of aromatic condensation in sorption energy, and illustrate the utility of EDA-Ebd comparison for predicting sorption.

The experiment was designed in a completely random way using a single factor of cultivation substrate compositions (lapilli and clay soil). Sunflower(Helianthus annuus) lived in the substrates were analyzed on their height, stem diameter, biomass, root volume, root surface area, length, root tip number at the end of the growing season.The results showed that there were significant influences of substrate compositions on sunflower growth, which mainly embodied in the accumulation of dry biomass, root system development, and soil physical indicators.Finally, an optimal substrate composition was found and used for the annual container seedlings of sunflower to increase its quality and yield.

Biomass derived carbon materials are widely available, cheap and abundant resources. The application of these materials as electrodes for rechargeable batteries shows great promise. To further explore their applications in energy storage fields, the structural design of these materials has been investigated. Hierarchical porous heteroatom‐doped carbon materials (HPHCs) with open three‐dimensional (3D) nanostructure have been considered as highly efficient energy storage materials. In this work, biomass soybean milk is chosen as the precursor to construct N, O co‐doped interconnected 3D porous carbon framework via two approaches by using soluble salts (NaCl/Na2CO3 and ZnCl2/Mg5(OH)2(CO3)4, respectively) as hard templates. The electrochemical results reveal that these structures were able to provide a stable cycling performance (710 mAh ⋅ g−1 at 0.1 A ⋅ g−1 after 300 cycles for HPHC‐a, and 610 mAh ⋅ g−1 at 0.1 A ⋅ g−1 after 200 cycles for HPHC‐b) in Li‐ion battery and Na‐ion storage (210 mAh ⋅ g−1 at 0.1 A ⋅ g−1 after 900 cycles for HPHC‐a) as anodes materials, respectively. Further comparative studies showed that these improvements in HPHC‐a performance were mainly due to the honeycomb‐like structure containing graphene‐like nanosheets and high nitrogen content in the porous structures. This work provides new approaches for the preparation of hierarchically structured heteroatom‐doped carbon materials by pyrolysis of other biomass precursors and promotes the applications of carbon materials in energy storage fields., Powerful soybean! Developing lightweight and inexpensive absorbents with strong and broadband absorbing performance toward microwave radiation is a challenging but pressing task. Here we report that rice husk-derived silica-hybridized holey carbon fabricated by combining pyrolysis and plasma processing methods is active for the microwave absorbing. The obtained metal-free product is barely prepared from wasted biomass without any additive reagents addition. The results demonstrate at the thickness of 1.5 mm, its reflection loss reaches −43.0 dB at 13.36 GHz and the corresponding absorption bandwidth approaches 3.68 GHz (from 11.44 GHz to 15.12 GHz), over-performing most bare biomass-derived absorbents. The enhanced performance is attributed to the silica blocks existing on surface, which is inherited from the raw rice husk precursor and will construct abundant hybridized contact sites with the derived carbon matrix, thereby providing plenty of interfacial polarizations. Meanwhile, the post plasma treatment can generate rich tiny holes on the carbon matrix, and endow it with high surface areas associated with a great variety of defective sites, and hence regulating the dielectric loss of the final product. It is anticipated that these can represent a feasible addition to the family of wasted biomass-derived sustainable microwave absorbents.

The effect of cropping regime on nitrogen (N) uptake in two coexisting plant grass species (Avena sativa and Agropyron cristatum) was investigated. The two grass species were cultivated by monocropping or intercropping. 15N-labeling was used to examine N uptake of NH4+ versus NO3− at 0–5 cm and 5–15 cm soil depths. The aboveground and total biomass of intercropped A. sativa was 1.3 times greater than monocropped A. sativa. The biomass of A. cristatum did not change between cropping systems. In the 0–5 cm soil layer, uptake of NO3− by A. sativa was 0.5 times less in the intercropped system than in the monocropped system, whereas uptake of NO3− by A. cristatum was 2.0 times more in the intercropped system. In the 5–15 cm depth, intercropping did not change N uptake by A. sativa but decreased NO3− uptake to 0.6 times by A. cristatum. Complementarity in N uptake between A. sativa and A. cristatum in the upper 0–5 cm soil layer is conducive to biomass accumulation. Intercropped A. sativa and A. cristatum does not compete strongly for soil resources and can alter their N uptake patterns to optimize biomass production.

Mapping and quantification of biomass changes is critical to understanding mangrove carbon sequestration, conservation, and restoration. Few previous studies have focused on mangrove biomass changes based on high spatial resolution images, particularly for disturbed and recovering areas. This study developed an effective model to estimate and map mangrove aboveground biomass dynamic change between 2010 and 2016 on Qi'ao Island in South China. The study area includes native Kandelia candel ( K. candel ) and planted Sonneratia apetala ( S. apetala ) mangrove species within the largest planted area in China. Models were developed using WorldView-2 images, digital surface models (DSMs), and the random forest algorithm. Accuracies of the model were assessed using multiyear field samples. DSMs were identified as the most important variable for model accuracy, reducing relative error by up to 3.14%. Three models were developed: a model for 2010, another model for 2016, and a combined model for 2010 and 2016. Compared with the 2010 (RMSE = 41.03 t/ha, RMSEr = 24.31%) and 2016 (RMSE = 39.92 t/ha, RMSEr = 23.40%) models, the combined model (RMSE = 50.99 t/ha, RMSEr = 30.48%) only increased the relative error by 6.17% and 7.08%, respectively. Mangrove biomass maps generated from the most accurate models showed total biomass increased from 23270.43 to 39819.03 tons by up to 71.11% over the study period. K. candel total biomass decreased by 36.5% due to Derris trifoliata challenge. S. apetala total biomass increased by 74.79% due to reforestation programs, achieving aboveground biomass accumulation of 4.17 t/ha for stands that existed in 2010. This study provides insights into biomass dynamic change in disturbed and recovering mangrove areas. Future studies should consider using LiDAR techniques to obtain actual tree height applied for biomass estimation instead of DSM.

Salt stress is a major negative factor affecting the sustainable development of agriculture. Phosphorus (P) deficiency often occurs in saline soil, and their interaction inhibits plant growth and seed yield for canola (Brassica napus L.). P supply is considered an effective way to alleviate the damage of salt stress. However, the knowledge of how P supply can promote plant growth in saline environment was limited. A field experiment was conducted to explore the effects of P rate on accumulation, and partitioning, of biomass and P, leaf photosynthesis traits, and yield performance in saline soil in the coastal area of Yancheng City, Jiangsu Province, China, during the 2018–2019 and 2019–2020 growing seasons. P supply increased biomass and P accumulation in all organs, and root had the most increments among different organs. At flowering stage, P supply increased the biomass and P partitioning in root and leaf, but it decreased the partitioning in stem. At maturity stage, P supply facilitated the biomass and P partitioning in seed, but it decreased the partitioning in stem and shell, and it increased the reproductive-vegetative ratio, suggesting that P supply can improve the nutrients transporting from vegetative organs to reproductive organs. Besides, P supply improved the leaf area index and photosynthetic rate at the flowering stage. As a result, the seed yield and oil yield were increased. In conclusion, P supply can improve the canola plant growth and seed yield in a saline environment. P fertilizer at the rate of 120 kg P2O5 ha−1 was recommended in this saline soil.

As an important tool for systematic analysis, genome-scale metabolic network (GSMN) model has been widely used in various organisms. However, there are few reports on the GSMNs of aquatic crustaceans. Litopenaeus vannamei is the largest and most productive shrimp species. Feed improvement is one of the important methods to improve the yield of L. vannamei and control water pollution caused by the inadequate absorption of feed. In this work, the first L. vannamei GSMN named iGH3005 was reconstructed and applied to the optimization of feed. iGH3005 was reconstructed based on the genomic data. The model includes 2,292 reactions and 3,005 genes. iGH3005 was used to analyze the nutritional requirements of five different L. vannamei commercial varieties and the genes influencing the metabolism of the nutrients. Based on the simulation, we found that tyrosine-protein kinase src64b like may catalyze different reactions in different commercial varieties. The preference of carbohydrate utilization is different in various commercial varieties, which may due to the different expressions of some genes. In addition, this investigation suggests that a rational and targeted modification in the macronutrient content of shrimp feed would lead to an increase in growth and feed conversion rate. The feed for different commercial varieties should be adjusted accordingly, and possible adjustment schemes were provided. The results of this work provided important information for physiological research and optimization of the components in feed of L. vannamei.

Recently, the utilization of renewable biomass instead of fossil fuels for producing fuels and chemicals is receiving much attention due to the global climate change. Among renewable biomass, marine algae are gaining importance as third generation biomass feedstocks owing to their advantages over lignocellulose. Particularly, red macroalgae have higher carbohydrate contents and simpler carbohydrate compositions than other marine algae. In red macroalgal carbphydrates, 3,6-anhydro-L-galactose (AHG) is the main sugar composing agarose along with D-galactose. However, AHG is not a common sugar and is chemically unstable. Thus, not only AHG but also red macroalgal biomass itself cannot be efficiently converted or utilized. Here, we biologically upgraded AHG to a new platform chemical, its sugar alcohol form, 3,6-anhydro-l-galactitol (AHGol), an anhydrohexitol. To accomplish this, we devised an integrated process encompassing a chemical hydrolysis process for producing agarobiose (AB) from agarose and a biological process for converting AB to AHGol using metabolically engineered Saccharomyces cerevisiae to efficiently produce AHGol from agarose with high titers and yields. AHGol was also converted to an intermediate chemical for plastics, isosorbide. To our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of upgrading a red macroalgal biomass component to a platform chemical via a new biological route, by using an engineered microorganism.

Understanding feedback between terrestrial carbon (C) cycle and climate change is linked to the effects of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) on soil respiration (Rs). However, the individual and interactive effects of N and P additions on soil respiration and its components (autotrophic [Ra] and heterotrophic respiration [Rh]) are not fully understood, especially in highly P limited subtropical forests. In this study, both field experiment and laboratory incubation (at 15 °C and 25 °C temperatures) were undertaken to examine the effects of N, P and N + P additions on Rs and Rh. Our results showed that N addition significantly increased Rs by 21.09%, but P and N + P additions exhibited no effects on Rs under field conditions. Under laboratory condition, N addition significantly suppressed Rh whereas P and N + P additions increased Rh compared with control. Meanwhile, N and P additions exhibited an antagonistic interaction on Rs, but N and P additions synergistically affected Rh under laboratory incubations at both incubation temperatures of 15 °C and 25 °C. Cumulative Rh was negatively correlated with fine root biomass, but was positively correlated with microbial biomass carbon regardless of incubation temperatures. Our findings indicated that both individual and interactive effects of N and P additions on Rs and Rh were required to be considered to improve prediction of N and P effects on forest C dynamics in the highly P limited subtropical forests.

Advancement in nanotechnology has increased production of nanoparticles which initiates concerns for freshwater ecosystems. Nanosized TiO2 is one of the most used materials and its ecotoxicity has been extensively studied. Here, a freshwater microcosm experiment was performed to investigate the effects of nanosized (10, 60, and 100 nm) and bulk TiO2 at 1 g L−1 on the alteration in community structure of fungal decomposers and the consequences on litter decomposition of Typha angustifolia leaves. After 209 days of exposure, the decomposition rate was significantly higher in 100 nm TiO2 treatment compared to the control, which was caused by its promotion on fungal biomass and metabolic activity. Therefore, the study provides the multifaceted evidences for different effects of TiO2 with varied sizes on T. angustifolia leaf decomposition and highlights the importance of understanding the potential effects of varying sizes and long-term exposure in nanoparticle risk assessments.

In order to research the viscosity reduction process of heavy oil by catalytic co-pyrolysis with biomass, the catalytic co-pyrolysis experiments of Liaohe heavy oil and sawdust with calcium naphthenate as catalyst were implemented in this paper. The experimental results showed that the viscosity reduction ratio was up to 98% under the optimum reaction conditions with reaction temperature of 350℃, reaction time of 30 min, sawdust content of 5 wt% and catalyst content of 0.05 wt%. To investigate changes in composition and structure of heavy oil before and after reaction, the oil samples were characterized by elemental analysis (EL), vapor pressure osmometry (VPO), gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC–MS), 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). In addition, the catalytic pyrolysis mechanism was researched to explain the catalytic effect of calcium naphthenate on the co-pyrolysis reaction. Besides, the significant synergetic eff ;ect on viscosity reduction of heavy oil in catalytic co-pyrolysis system was demonstrated further. Finally, liquid products of sawdust pyrolysis were found to be beneficial to viscosity reduction of heavy oil. This work had a certain reference value for utilizing renewable biomass energy in viscosity reduction process of heavy oil.

The objective of this study was to identify the effect of cadmium (Cd) contamination on the decomposition of aquatic macrophyte litter and its eutrophic secondary pollution. A laboratory experiment was conducted with three treatments: water Cd contamination (Cd-w), litter Cd contamination (Cd-l) and control (CK). The results showed that CK and Cd-w exhibited the typical decomposition dynamics of litter, i.e., early rapid decomposition followed by slow decomposition, while the litter biomass loss (BL) in Cd-l exhibited an approximately linear relationship with time over the 64-day experimental period. The BL in Cd-l was only 10.8% in the initial 4 days, while that in CK and Cd-w was 59.0% and 54.8%, respectively. Cd inhibited the fluctuation of the water chemical oxygen demand (COD) by reducing both the early increase and the subsequent decrease. The increases in water total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) were inhibited by Cd contamination throughout most of the decomposition period. The alterations of litter quality during the plant growth period and of the bacterial community during the litter decomposition period by Cd contamination could explain the variations in litter decomposition rate and its eutrophic secondary pollution during the early and late decomposition stages, respectively. The Cd inhibition of the eutrophic secondary pollution of aquatic macrophytes has great significance for the improved evaluation of Cd contamination.

The mechanisms of a novel method, biomass gasification under a mixed agent of CO2 and H2O using the thermal heat in high temperature (1450–1650 °C) slags, were identified in this study for the purpose of biomass treatment in the agriculture and slag disposal in the steel industry. The characteristics of gasification equilibriums, with varying factors including temperature, pressure, reacted CO2 and H2O amounts, were clarified especially the roles of hot slags. Both the target syngas including CO, H2 and CH4 and the polluting gases comprising of NH3, NO and NO2 were considered here. The results indicated that compared to the limited influence of blast furnace slags, the introduction of steel slags remarkably increased both the syngas yields and the char formed. Furthermore, it was found that there existed a transition temperature range for the H2 production and NH3 release, providing significant ideas for syngas optimization. The present study could thus not only offer important clues for the scientific understandings of biomass gasification using the thermal heat in hot slags but also show important guidance toward utilization of this emerging method.

In this study, the effect of various initial Zn2+ concentration additionally on microalgae growth and biochemical composition were investigated. The Spirulina platensis biomass of each concentration reached the maximum at the end of the cultivation. However, high levels could severely inhibit the growth of microalgae. Fluorescence activity occurred changes in response to heavy metal stress. Moreover, biochemical composition in Spirulina platensis altered under zinc stress, and the highest contents of phycocyanin (PC), Chlorophyll-a (Chl-a), Carotenoid and zinc accumulation were obtained. The proportion of saturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids increased constantly in response to Zn2+ exposure. Overall, this study indicated that the use of Spirulina platensis is a viable method for treating zinc containing wastewater and harvested microalgae can be processed into high-zinc products.

Simple Summary Drought is one of the main drivers resulting in carbon imbalance in terrestrial ecosystems and the mortality of plants. How plants can survive under drought stress is becoming a major focus of interest. Non-structural carbohydrates include sugars and starch that are essential to plant metabolism and their roles in drought stress are thought to be critically important. Our study examined the allocation strategies of non-structural carbohydrates for three-year-old Pinus tabulaeformis (Chinese pine) seedlings under drought and subsequent re-watering conditions. Our results indicated that P. tabulaeformis seedlings showed strong drought resistance by investing limited non-structural carbohydrates to roots and depleting the starch storage in each organ (leaf, twig, stem, and root) to fuel the needs of plant metabolism and osmotic adjustment. Starch storage was first reconstructed after the drought stress was released. Our findings not only prove the important role of non-structural carbohydrates, especially starch storage, in the survival of P. tabulaeformis seedlings under drought condition, but also complement the limited studies on allocation strategies of non-structural carbohydrate after the drought stress is released, and broaden our understanding of the physiological mechanisms of plants in response to drought stress. Abstract Intense and frequent drought events strongly affect plant survival. Non-structural carbohydrates (NSCs) are important “buffers” to maintain plant functions under drought conditions. We conducted a drought manipulation experiment using three-year-old Pinus tabulaeformis Carr. seedlings. The seedlings were first treated under different drought intensities (i.e., no irrigation, severe, and moderate) for 50 days, and then they were re-watered for 25 days to explore the dynamics of NSCs in the leaves, twigs, stems, and roots. The results showed that the no irrigation and severe drought treatments significantly reduced photosynthetic rate by 93.9% and 32.6% for 30 days, respectively, leading to the depletion of the starch storage for hydraulic repair, osmotic adjustment, and plant metabolism. The seedlings under moderate drought condition also exhibited starch storage consumption in leaves and twigs. After re-watering, the reduced photosynthetic rate recovered to the control level within five days in the severe drought group but showed no sign of recovery in the no irrigation group. The seedlings under the severe and moderate drought conditions tended to invest newly fixed C to starch storage and hydraulic repair instead of growth due to the “drought legacy effect”. Our findings suggest the depletion and recovery of starch storage are important strategies for P. tabulaeformis seedlings, and they may play key roles in plant resistance and resilience under environmental stress.

As an important tool for systematic analysis, genome-scale metabolic network (GSMN) model has been widely used in various organisms. However, there are few reports on the GSMNs of aquatic crustaceans. Litopenaeus vannamei is the largest and most productive shrimp species. Feed improvement is one of the important methods to improve the yield of L. vannamei and control water pollution caused by the inadequate absorption of feed. In this work, the first L. vannamei GSMN named iGH3005 was reconstructed and applied to the optimization of feed. iGH3005 was reconstructed based on the genomic data. The model includes 2,292 reactions and 3,005 genes. iGH3005 was used to analyze the nutritional requirements of five different L. vannamei commercial varieties and the genes influencing the metabolism of the nutrients. Based on the simulation, we found that tyrosine-protein kinase src64b like may catalyze different reactions in different commercial varieties. The preference of carbohydrate utilization is different in various commercial varieties, which may due to the different expressions of some genes. In addition, this investigation suggests that a rational and targeted modification in the macronutrient content of shrimp feed would lead to an increase in growth and feed conversion rate. The feed for different commercial varieties should be adjusted accordingly, and possible adjustment schemes were provided. The results of this work provided important information for physiological research and optimization of the components in feed of L. vannamei.

Manufacturing of porous carbon with biomass resources is intensively investigated in recent decades. The diversity of biomass species and great variety of processing methods enable the structural richness of porous carbon as well as their wide applications. This review specifically focuses on the structure of biomass-derived porous carbon either inherited from natural biomass or created by post-treatment. The intrinsic structure of plant biomass is briefly introduced and the utilization of the unique structures at different length-scales is discussed. In term of post-treatment, the structural features of activated carbon by traditional physical and chemical activation are summarized and compared in a wide spectrum of biomass species, statistical analysis is performed to evaluate the effectiveness of different activation methods in creating specific pore structures. The similar pore structure of biomass-derived carbon and coal-derived carbon suggests a promising replacement with more sustainable biomass resources in producing porous carbon. In summary, using biomass as porous carbon precursor endows the flexibility of using its naturally patterned microstructure and the tunability of controlled pore-creation by post-treatment.

Landfill leachate is heavily-polluted wastewater generated from municipal solid wastes, which generally includes amounts of ammonium that are highly toxic to living organisms and the environment. The locally isolated microalgae have great potential in removing ammonium and producing value-added biomass from leachate. In this study, we determined the most robust algal strain, which was isolated and screened from a local landfill, and identified using the 18 s RNA gene sequences analysis. Subsequently, the integrated strategy of nutrient balance and trophic mode conversion was employed to make the leachate suitable for ammonium removal and algal growth. The results showed that a most robust, locally isolated strain NCU-9 (Nanchang University-9), was a promising strain and was selected out of four candidates and identified as Chlorella pyrenoidosa. This strain had a high tolerance to ammonium and leachate-borne bacteria when grown in unsterilized leachate. An optimal strategy was used, which included the nutrient balancing of nitrogen (N) to phosphorus (P) ratio (N/P) at 30:1 along with trophic mode conversion of N deprivation, to enhance the ammonium removal rate to as high as 95% in leachate remediation. The protein analysis of the cell composition was used to confirm this optimum strategy for ammonium removal, while the potential of NCU-9 was also considered as a value-added feedstock for animal feed in the downstream industry. Based on these results, we can conclude that microalgae-based leachate remediation has practical potential for nutrient recovery and biomass utilization.
