[EN] Due to a continuous abandonment of marginal agricultural land, Mediterranean pine forests are growing both in biomass stock and area but remain mainly unmanaged. Pinus halepensis is one of the main pioneer species with strong expansion throughout the Mediterranean basin. In mature forests and pole stands, selective thinnings aimed to eliminate dominated and dead trees are necessary to improve the resilience and persistence of these forest ecosystems. Bioenergy market provides an opportunity to mobilise this woody material, helping to prevent and reduce wildfires in a context of climate change and energy transition. Despite the existing expertise on wood harvesting, there is a lack of practical knowledge about cost-effective methods for bioenergy use of selective thinnings in such forests. The objective of this study was to compare thinning harvesting methods in representative 63-year-old Pinus halepensis afforestation in pole stage for bioenergy uses, following the silvicultural treatments defined in the Spanish forest management plan. Time studies were performed over six representative plots in Navalon (Spain). Treatments included three plots with the traditional stem wood method combined with the logging of forest residues (integrated system), and three plots with the whole tree chipping (whole tree system). Time, productivity and fuel consumption were recorded for both systems. A woodchip quality assessment of each assortment was performed in the laboratory according to European standards. The results obtained demonstrated that time consumption and productivity were similar between the integrated harvesting system and the whole tree system. Regarding the total energy balance, it should be noted that both systems produce woodchips that contain over ten times more energy than that required to mobilise and process the obtained biomass. Fuel consumption, costs and degree of damage were slightly higher in the whole tree system due to the more intensive forwarding operation. The two assortments of woodchips in the integrated system had a higher (chipped log material) and lower quality (chipped crown material) than whole tree woodchips. In conclusion, integrated harvesting is a better option to diminish fuel consumption, cost and environmental impact, and also to obtain better quality woodchips for the production of added value biofuels (pellets)., VLA and JVOV conceived the study and draft the manuscript; VLA carried out the field measurements; VLA and GSO carried out the biomass tests in the laboratory; VLA, JVOV and JFUS performed the statistical analysis. В результате проведенных исследований было установлено, что элементный состав лесозаготовительныхостатков (низкое содержание азота и золы) подходит для сырья, предназначенного для использования в энергетике.Также была определена возможность использования этого сырья для производства брикетов и установлена корреляция между физическими свойствами конечного продукта, параметрами сырья и процесса брикетирования. Материалом для испытаний служила древесная щепа влажностью 10 %, 15 %, 20 %, спрессованная в закрытой камере при температурах 22, 73 и 103 °С при удельном давлении 65 МПа. Наилучшие результаты были получены при влажности материала 10 %. Установлено, что температура древесной щепы при агломерации влияет на степень уплотнения и механическую прочность полученных брикетов. Уплотнение выгоднее проводить при более высокой температуре. Исследованием также определено влияние фракционного состава брикетированной смеси, разделенной на размерные группы 0–1, 1–4, 4–8 и 8–16 мм, ее влажности и температуры процесса намеханическую прочность продукта. However, the use of biomass leads to environmental pollution. Logging residues are an alternative to plant biomass of various origins. They differ significantly from other previously used plant materials. This difference is due to the heterogeneous composition and relatively large size of individual particles. The inhomogeneous physical properties of the raw material in the form of crushed logging residues and its composition can cause serious problems in its further use. As a result of the research, it was found that the elemental composition of logging residues (low nitrogen and ash content) is suitable for raw materials intended for use in the energy sector. The possibility of using this raw material for the production of briquettes was also determined and a correlation was established between the physical properties of the final product. , parameters of raw materials and briquetting process. The material for testing was wood chips with a moisture content of 10%, 15%, 20%, pressed in a closed chamber at temperatures of 22, 73, and 103 ° C at a specific pressure of 65 MPa. The best results were obtained with a material moisture content of 10%. It was found that the temperature of wood chips during agglomeration affects the degree of compaction and mechanical strength of the resulting briquettes. Compaction is more profitable at a higher temperature. The study also determined the effect of the fractional composition of the briquetted mixture, divided into size groups of 0–1, 1–4, 4–8 and 8–16 mm, its humidity and process temperature on the mechanical strength of the product. Based on the results obtained, the most favorable fractional composition of the briquetted mixture, its moisture content and the temperature of the compaction process were determined.

International audience; Rubber trees are the main source of natural rubber (NR). The area occupied by rubber plantations rose from 3.9 million ha in 1961 to 12.5 million ha in 2018. Both the expansion of rubber plantations in marginal zones (prone to biotic and abiotic stress), and long-term rubber tree cultivation in traditional areas, raise questions about the sustainability of NR production in a context of climate change. Our study set out to gain insights into the biogeochemical cycles in rubber plantations, for a better matching of fertilizer inputs to the dynamics of nutrient demand throughout rubber tree growth. Nutrient accumulation in tree biomass is a major component of the biological cycle in tree plantations. We studied the dynamics of biomass and nutrient accumulation in two chronosequences covering the whole lifespan of a plantation in Ivory Coast managed on a sandy soil at the SAPH site, and one on a clayey soil at the SOGB site. In total, 56 trees were destructively sampled in 2-, 5-, 20- and roughly 40-year-old stands. While the use of allometric relationships is common for estimating nutrient stocks in planted forests, this study was the first to provide allometric equations predicting nutrient stocks in rubber tree components. Allometric models were applied to the inventory of 4 commercial stands, for each age at each site, to estimate stand biomass and nutrient stocks. The current annual increments of nutrient stocks in tree biomass peaked between 2 and 5 years after planting. They reached 80 kg ha(-1) yr(-1) for N, 14 kg ha(-1) yr(-1) for P and 34 kg ha(-1) yr(-1) for K at SAPH (53, 7, and 39 kg ha(-1) yr(-1) respectively at SOGB), which highlighted the importance of an appropriate fertilization schedule for young rubber trees. At the clear-cut age (38-40 years), the amounts of nutrients accumulated in tree biomass were 970 kg N ha(-1), 188 kg P ha(-1), 366 kg K ha(-1), 941 kg Ca ha(-1) and 255 kg Mg ha(-1) on the sandy soil at SAPH (907,118, 629 1499, and 375 kg ha(-1) respectively on the clayey soil at SOGB). Contrasting soil properties and management practices at the two sites had a much greater effect on the amounts of P, K, Ca and Mg accumulated in the trees than on N accumulation. Logging practices in rubber plantations can lead to considerable nutrient exports on poor tropical soils. Harvest residues should be distributed uniformly in the plots so that the roots of young trees can quickly gain access to the nutrients released during decomposition.

Finland has a long tradition of utilizing forest-based biomass for energy and industry purposes and the use has steadily increased in the past decade due to changes in international and regional energy policies. Intensive harvesting practices, in which a larger proportion of the woody biomass is removed from the forest stand, are becoming more common. The objectives of this study were (i) to evaluate the spatial and temporal extent of soil surface disturbance caused by stump-root system harvesting and (ii) to quantify how much biomass and nitrogen is removed from the stand in stump and coarse root harvesting. The extent of surface disturbance was assessed in three clear-cut Norway spruce ( Picea abies , (L . ) Karst.) stands in southern and central Finland, differing in time since harvest. To determine the biomass distribution of the stump-root system, stumps and coarse roots were excavated at one of the experimental stands. Across all age classes (time since harvest) less soil surface had remained undisturbed at the stump harvesting sites (52%) than at the sites where only mechanical site preparation (28%) had been carried out. Thus, the findings of this study indicate that soil disturbance caused by stump harvesting can exist on forest soil surface for more than a decade following harvest. The total biomass of the stump-root system in the stand was estimated to 39.3 Mg ha −1 and 79% of this biomass was removed during stump harvesting and consequently, 8.3 Mg ha −1 of stump-root biomass remained in soil. The stump-root system accounted for 17% of the whole-tree biomass, and coarse roots and fine coarse roots represented a significant portion of it (73%). Thus, the stump-root system represents a large biomass component in boreal forest stands. However, forest management utilizing stumps may result in carbon losses from the stand.

An alternative to plant biomass of various origins are forest logging residues. They differ significantly from other, previously used plant materials. This difference is due to the heterogeneous composition and relatively large size of individual particles. This research on the compaction of this type of shredded material was aimed at determining the influence of the die height on the density and relaxation of briquettes. This parameter is crucial for the proper construction of compaction devices. The measurements were carried out for the same fractional composition of the shredded logging residues, with variable input parameters of the material and process. It was found that the briquette density and relaxation are influenced by the die height, as well as the material moisture content and process temperature. The highest density at maximum compaction pressure (1.40 g·cm–3) was obtained at a moisture content of 16%, temperature of 80 °C, and the lowest die height (195 mm). In the case of the briquette density after ejection from the die, the best results were obtained at the same temperature and die height but at a moisture content of 9%. The tests confirmed that, regardless of the process temperature and material moisture, the briquette density increases as the die height is reduced. The relaxation coefficient of compacted logging residues ranges from 21.7% to 50.1% and depends mainly on the material moisture content and the temperature of the process. The lowest value of the relaxation coefficient (21.7 ± 1.61) was obtained at 9% moisture content, 60 °C temperature, and 220 mm die height.

Logging residues, which refer to the unused portions of trees cut during logging, are important sources of biomass for the emerging biofuel industry and are critical feedstocks for the first-type biofuel facilities (e.g., corn-ethanol facilities). Logging residues are under-utilized sources of biomass for energetic purposes. To support the scaling-up of the bioenergy industry, it is essential to design cost-effective biofuel supply chains that not only minimize costs, but also consider the biomass quality characteristics. The biomass quality is heavily dependent upon the moisture and the ash contents. Ignoring the biomass quality characteristics and its intrinsic costs may yield substantial economic losses that will only be discovered after operations at a biorefinery have begun. This paper proposes a novel bioenergy supply chain network design model that minimizes operational costs and includes the biomass quality-related costs. The proposed model is unique in the sense that it supports decisions where quality is not unrealistically assumed to be perfect. The effectiveness of the proposed methodology is proven by assessing a case study in the state of Tennessee, USA. The results demonstrate that the ash and moisture contents of logging residues affect the performance of the supply chain (in monetary terms). Higher-than-target moisture and ash contents incur in additional quality-related costs. The quality-related costs in the optimal solution (with final ash content of 1% and final moisture of 50%) account for 27% of overall supply chain cost. Based on the numeral experimentation, the total supply chain cost increased 7%, on average, for each additional percent in the final ash content.

Following the European Union strategy concerning renewable energy (RE), Portugal established in their national policy programmes that the production of electrical energy from RE should reach 45% of the total supply by 2010. Since Portugal has large forest biomass resources, a significant part of this energy will be obtained from this source. In addition to the two existing electric power plants, with 22 MW of power capacity, 13 new power plants having a total of 86.4 MW capacity are in construction. Together these could generate a combination of electrical and thermal energy, known as combined heat and power (CHP) production. As these power plants will significantly increase the exploitation of forests resources, this article evaluates the potential quantities of available forest biomass residue for that purpose. In addition to examining the feasibility of producing both types of energy, we also examine the potential for producing only electric energy. Results show that if only electricity is generated some regions will need to have alternative fuel sources to fulfil the demand. However, if cogeneration is implemented the wood fuel resource will be sufficient to fulfill the required capacity demand.

Bioenergy has an important role in the implementation of the Kyoto agreement in Finland. The main sources of wood residues for energy production are logging areas and sawmills. The use of forest chips can be of great significance in reducing carbon dioxide emissions by replacing fossil fuels. Increasing the use of forest chips has environmental benefits, but it also includes possible environmental disadvantages. Therefore, system research is needed to assess the forest chip utilisation prospects for their environmental quality to secure sustainable forest management. Life-cycle methodology was developed and applied to assess environmental burdens and impacts of the logging and sawmill residues throughout the whole fuel chain from the forest to energy production. According to the study, the energy efficiencies of the forest chip systems are quite high. Net CO 2 emissions of the systems are low owing to the low input of external primary energy required to operate the systems. Although wood energy is renewable, it has many similarities with fossil fuels, e.g. as the emissions of the conversion phase are significant.

The European Union (EU) relies largely on bioenergy to achieve its climate and energy targets for 2020 and beyond. Special focus is placed on utilization of biomass residues, which are considered to cause low environmental impacts. We used the dataset from the latest European Commission document on the sustainability of solid and gaseous biomass (SWD2014 259), complementing those results by: i) designing three pathways for domestic-heat production using forest logging residues, with different combustion technologies; ii) expanding the analysis to include forest carbon stock development with and without bioenergy; iii) using absolute climate metrics to assess the surface temperature response by the end of the century to a bioenergy and a reference fossil system; iv) including multiple climate forcers (well-mixed GHG, near term climate forcers and surface albedo change); iv) quantifying life cycle impacts on acidification, particulate matter emissions and photochemical ozone formation; v) reviewing potential risks for forest ecosystem degradation due to increased removal of residues. Supply-chain GHG savings of the three pathways analysed ranged between 80% and 96% compared to a natural gas system, above the 70% threshold suggested by the EU. However, the climate impact of bioenergy should be assessed by considering also the non-bioenergy uses of the biomass and by including all climate forcers. We calculate the Surface Temperature Response to bioenergy and fossil systems by means of Absolute Global surface Temperature Potential (AGTP) metric. Domestic heating from logging residues is generally beneficial to mitigate the surface temperature increase by 2100 compared to the use of natural gas and other fossil sources. As long as residues with a decay rate in the forest higher than 2.7%*yr−1 are considered as feedstock, investing now in the mobilization of residues for heat production can reduce the temperature increase by 2100 compared to all the fossil sources analysed, both in case of bioenergy as a systemic change or in case of bioenergy as a transitory option. Furthermore, several environmental risks are associated with the removal and use of forest logging residues for bioenergy. These issues concern mostly local air pollution, biodiversity loss and, mainly for stumps removal, physical damage to forest soils. Forest logging residues are not free of environmental risks. Actions promoting their use should consider: (i) that climate change mitigation depends mainly on the decay rate of biomass under natural decomposition and time and rate of technology deployment, (ii) whether management guidelines aimed at protecting long-term forest productivity are in place and (iii) whether proper actions for the management of adverse effects on local air pollution are in place.

A new national energy technology programme, Wood Energy, has been launched in Finland by the National Technology Agency (Tekes).The programme's total budget for 1999 - 2003 is 250 million FIM (45 million USD), Tekes' share of which amounts to 50 million FIM.The programme is co-ordinated by VTT Energy.In 1998, the energy use of forest chips amounted to 0.5 million m3 solid. The target of the Wood Energy Technology Programme is to increase the annual use of forest chips to 2.5 million m3 solid in 2003, i.e., five-fold in 5 years. It is obvious that the target can be achieved mainly by increasing the use of logging residues from final cuttings, since salvaging residues from cut-over areas is more cost competitive than harvesting smallwood from young stands and early commercial thinnings. Newertheless, chip production from thinning of young stands will be developed as well. Increasing the use of forest chips requires that the cost of production is reduced still further, and that is naturally one of the main objectives of the programme. The programme is also helping to develop quality control and storege of wood chips. The quality of chips can be seen as an important cost factor, since the amount of heat obtained from the wood chips, the emissions produced, and the reliability of delivery and use all depend upon it. Improvement of the chip quality is not confirmed solely to forest chips, but it is just as important for wood residues from primary timber processing at sawmills. For this reason the scope of the programme also includes bark, sawdust, and other solid wood residues from the forest products industry that are suitable for fuel.

The technical potential of forest chips from final fellings in Central Finland was estimated using a method based on biomass maps derived from a multi-source forest inventory technique. Image segmentation techniques were applied to a satellite image mosaic to detect stand boundaries. The technical potential of forest chips was computed based on primary forestry residues, i.e. logging residues and stumps from final fellings. Harvesting level definitions for final fellings were established using realized statistics for roundwood at the municipality level as well as larger area statistics. The sensitivity of the potential to ecological and technical constraints in the model was also examined. The technical recovery rate of stump harvesting according to biomass harvesting guidelines was evaluated separately. The critical prerequisites for using the advanced, spatially explicit approach to analysing forest energy potentials may lie in the existence of spatially explicit forest inventory data and the biometric models for tree biomass assortments. The method applied was capable of taking into account the constraints that rely upon map data, such the actual forwarding distance or steepness of the slope in the terrain. The calculation results can be used for strategic decision making in the field of forest bioenergy production.

International audience; Converting fossil-based energy systems into carbon-neutral systems is an essential strategy to the reach targets set by the Kyoto Protocol. For nations with an active logging industry, salvaging logging residues or slash to produce bioenergy has a huge potential for development. However, removing forest woodfuel may have ecological consequences, notably for saproxylic biodiversity. The consequences of such removals on biotic assemblages in temperate forests remain poorly documented in comparison with boreal forests. In this study, we compared the species richness and composition of saproxylic beetle assemblages among different types of logging residues in several temperate oak-dominated French forests. We showed that residue tree species was the most important factor for saproxylic biodiversity, as it not only influences assemblage composition, but also species number. Oak and hornbeam logging residues were richer than logging residues from beech and spruce. Decay stage also appeared to be an important factor for saproxylic beetles associated to logging residues; richness was lower in fresh than in decayed residues. Moreover canopy closure had a strong and significant effect on beetle assemblages in logging residues. Lastly, residue diameter only partially explained differences in saproxylic beetles assemblages. Comparably to studies in boreal forests (mainly in Scandinavia), our results discuss the role of logging residues retention in maintaining saproxylic biodiversity in temperate forests. It may prove necessary not only to maintain adequate volumes of both fine and mid-size woody debris from varied tree species, but also to let some debris naturally and completely decay.

The uncertainty of the bioenergy production were analyzed using probabilistic distribution functions and an estimate of 1.83 million ha -1 of radiata pine plantations by year 2030. Parameters considered for the uncertainty analyses included the rotation age, mean annual increment, annual planting rate, logging residue production by harvesting age, and power plant efficiency. Simulations were projected for 20 years (2010-2030). The results of our model suggest that biomass of logging residues and bolewood of radiata pine plantations would produce 294.8 PJ by 2008, which would cover 83.4% of the current installed capacity of the Chile Power Central Interconnected System, and could increase to four times the 2008 estimate (381%) by 2030. Model predictions suggest that bioethanol produced using biomass residues could supply 15 to 25% of gasoline blends at 2% (E98) and 5% (E95), respectively, by year 2010. Bolewood biomass could supply 76% and 190%.

Mediante ecuaciones de densidad de la madera por clase de edad y región, contenido de humedad de la madera y efciencia de una hipotética planta generadora de energía eléctrica, se estimó la electricidad producida por la biomasa a la edad de cosecha incluyendo los residuos de ésta. La producción de bioetanol fue estimada en 275 L por tonelada seca. El análisis de incertidumbre de la producción de bioenergía se obtuvo mediante funciones de densidad de probabilidades y un supuesto de 1,83 millones de ha de plantaciones de P. radiata al año 2030. Los parámetros empleados incluyen la edad de rotación, incremento medio anual, tasa de plantación anual, producción de residuos según edad de rotación y efciencia de la planta eléctrica. Las simulaciones fueron realizadas para un horizonte de 20 años (2010-2030). El modelo seguido estima que el potencial de generación de biomasa de los residuos de cosecha forestal y de la madera fustal de las plantaciones de P. radiata, podría cubrir el 83,4% de la capacidad instalada de energía eléctrica del Sistema Interconectado Central (SIC), que asciende a 294,8 PJ el año 2008 y casi cuadriplica (381%) al año 2030. Según el modelo, la biomasa de residuos podría suplir el 25% o el 15% de la mezcla de un 2 y 5% de gasolina con bioetanol, respectivamente, para el 2010. Si se considera además la biomasa fustal estos valores ascienden a 190 y 76%, respectivamente.

Biyokütle kaynaklarından biri olan hasat artıklarının değerlendirilebilmesi; envanter, elde edinim ve yararlanma süreçlerini içermektedir. Bu çalışmada elde edinim aşaması konu edilmekte olup hasat artıklarının toplanması, biriktirilmesi, bölmeden çıkarılması, yol kenarında elleçlenmesi, yongalanması, taşınması, depolanması, vb. süreçleri içeren bir sistem yapısının kurgulanması amaçlanmıştır. Uluslar arası literatür bilgileri ve Türkiye’ deki denemeler; hasat artıklarının kullanılmasında maliyetleri ortaya çıkaran unsurların elde edinim aşamasında odaklandığını göstermiştir. Bu bakımdan hasat artıkları transport lojistik sisteminin oluşturulması gerekmektedir. Bu çalışmada bu sistemin kavramsal çerçevesi tanıtılmıştır. Evaluation of logging residues one of the sources of forest biomass, includes inventory, procurement, and utilization processes. In this study, the procurement process of logging residues was treated. It was aimed to set up a system imagining for supply chain of residuals, which consist of collecting, accumulating, extracting, handling, chipping, hauling and stocking sub-process. International literatures and experiment carried out in Turkish forestry displayed that the cost components of residuals supply chain focused on procurement phase. Therefore, it is necessary a transportation logistics system for logging residues in supply chain management concept. This study indicated the conceptual framework of the envisaged system.

Liikennepolttoaineiden korvaaminen biopohjaisilla polttoaineilla on yhtenä keinona ilmastonmuutoksen hillinnässä ja öljyriippuvuuden vähentämisessä. Suomessa kehitetään biomassan kaasutukseen perustuvia synteettisen biodieselin, ns. Fischer-Tropsch-dieselin, tuotantotekniikoita. Yhtenä raaka-aineena F-T-dieseliin on mahdollista käyttää turvetta, mikä herättää paljon mielenkiintoa Suomen suurten turvevarojen takia. Tässä tutkimuksessa tarkasteltiin turve-F-T-dieselin kasvihuonevaikutusta elinkaarinäkökulmasta. Turpeen ja turvemaan eri hyödyntämistapauksille laskettuja ketjuja verrattiin fossiiliseen dieseliin sekä metsätähde- ja ruokohelpipohjaiseen F-T-dieseliin. Kasvihuonevaikutuksen arvioimiseen käytettiin säteilypakotetta. Työssä laskettiin kasvihuonevaikutus useissa tuotantoketjuissa käyttäen erilaisia oletuksia. Työssä ei arvioitu eri oletusten realistisuutta. Laskennallisina tarkasteluaikajänteinä käytettiin 100 ja 300 vuotta. Turvepohjainen F-T-diesel on ilmastovaikutukseltaan tarkastelun rajoista, lähtötilanteesta ja jälkikäytöstä riippuen vaihtelevassa asemassa verrattuna fossiiliseen dieseliin sekä metsätähde- ja ruokohelpipohjaiseen F-T-dieseliin verrattuna. Useissa ketjuissa kasvihuonevaikutus on fossiilista dieseliä suurempi. Jos turve tuotetaan suopelloilta, jotka ovat voimakkaita kasvihuonekaasujen päästölähteitä, on kasvihuonevaikutus pienempi kuin, jos turve tuotetaan metsäojitetuilta soilta. Jos aluetta hyödynnetään turvetuotannon jälkeen kasvattamalla siinä metsää tai viljelemällä ruokohelpeä ja jälkikäytössä tuotettu biomassa hyödynnetään edelleen F-T-dieseliksi, alenee ketjussa tuotetun F-T-dieselin hyödyntämisen kokonaisvaikutus. Fossiiliseen dieseliin verrattuna turvepohjaisen F-T-dieselin aiheuttama kasvihuonevaikutus on pitkällä tarkasteluajalla alhaisempi siinä tapauksessa, että turve tuotetaan suopelloilta. Käytetyn turvevaran lisäksi merkittävimmin turve-F-T-dieselin kasvihuonevaikutukseen vaikuttavat polttoaineen prosessointi (häviöt ja käytetty sähkö) ja loppukäyttö. Prosessissa käytetyn sähkön tuottamisessa aiheutuvilla päästöillä on suuri vaikutus kasvihuonevaikutukseen. Tavallisesti uudessa sähköä kuluttavassa toiminnassa kulutettava sähkö on arvioitava marginaalisähköksi, mutta tietyissä erikoistapauksissa myös marginaalisähköstä poikkeava vähäpäästöinen sähkö voisi tulla kyseeseen. Tässä tutkimuksessa prosessissa kulutettavan sähkön tuotannossa syntyvät päästöt arvioitiin sekä nykyisen tyypillisen marginaalisähkön että nollapäästöisen sähkön mukaan, jotta sähkön tuotannon päästöjen merkitys tulisi selvästi tuloksissa esille. Turvepohjaisen F-T-dieselin kasvihuonevaikutus metsäteollisuuteen integroidussa tuotannossa on fossiilista dieseliä pienempi, kun tuotannossa oletetaan käytettävän nollapäästöistä sähköä ja turvemaata hyödynnetään liikennepolttoaineiden tuottamiseen kokonaisvaltaisesti, siis tuotetaan ensin turve-F-T-dieseliä ja jälkikäytössä (metsitys) syntynyttä puubiomassaa jalostetaan myös F-T-dieseliksi. Työssä arvioitiin myös hiilidioksidin talteenoton ja varastoinnin (CCS) hyödyntämistä F-T-dieselin tuotannossa. Kansainvälinen ilmastopaneeli on listannut CCS:n yhdeksi merkittäväksi ilmastonmuutoksen hillinnän keinoksi tulevaisuudessa. F-T-dieselin tuotantoprosessissa erotetaan hiilidioksidia prosessiteknisistä syistä, ja erotetusta hiilidioksidista (häviöstä) on mahdollista saada talteen suuri osa, mikä vähentää biomassapohjaisen (turve, metsätähde ja ruokohelpi) F-T-dieselin kasvihuonevaikutusta. Jos F-T-dieselin tuotantoon on sisällytetty CCS, vähenee 300 vuoden tarkasteluajalla turve- ja biomassapohjaisen F-T-dieselin tuotannon kasvihuonevaikutus fossiilisen dieselin vaikutuksen tasolle tai sen alle ketjusta riippuen.

A GIS-based approach is presented in order to define a decision support system tool for strategic planning of forest biomass supply chain for a heating/energy use. The presented GIS-based approach focus its analysis on forest management data, road network characteristics, terrain features and chipping and transporting cost. According to two different heating plants location, results on the availability of logging residues for energy use are presented in form of cost supply curves. For the investigated case study, supply curves evidence that, also at local level, different locations of heating plants can affect the cost-efficient use of logging residues in form of wood chips.

Liikennepolttoaineiden korvaaminen biopohjaisilla polttoaineilla on yhtenä keinona ilmastonmuutoksen hillinnässä ja öljyriippuvuuden vähentämisessä. Suomessa kehitetään biomassan kaasutukseen perustuvia synteettisen biodieselin, ns. Fischer-Tropsch-dieselin, tuotantotekniikoita. Yhtenä raaka-aineena F-T-dieseliin on mahdollista käyttää turvetta, mikä herättää paljon mielenkiintoa Suomen suurten turvevarojen takia. Tässä tutkimuksessa tarkasteltiin turve-F-T-dieselin kasvihuonevaikutusta elinkaarinäkökulmasta. Puuenergian teknologiaohjelmassa kehitettiin metsähakkeen suurimittaisia tuotantoketjuja ja niihin liittyviä teknologioita. Kehitystyössä tähdennettiin tuotantokustannusten alentamista, toimitusvarmuutta ja metsähakkeen laadun parantamista. Ohjelmassa on kehitetty hakkeen suurkäyttäjille erinomaisesti soveltuvaa risutukkitekniikkaa, joka on nopeasti yleistynyt Suomessa ja leviämässä vientituotteeksi. Metsähakkeen raaka-ainepohja on laajentunut ohjelman aikana päätehakkuiden tähteistä nuorten metsien harvennuspuuhun ja kantomurskeeseen. Ohjelman kokonaislaajuus oli noin 42 miljoonaa euroa ja siihen osallistui 53 yritystä ja 27 tutkimusyksikköä. Tässä ohjelman neljännessä vuosikirjassa esitellään 31:n käynnissä olevan projektin tuloksia vuosilta 2002-2003. Ohjelmaan on liitetty Puupolttoaineiden pientuotannon ja -käytön panostusalue vuonna 2002. Siinä kehitetään korkeatasoista osaamista koko puupolttoaineiden pienkäytön liiketoimintaketjuun: polttoaineen hankinnasta, käsittelystä, varastoinnista ja logistiikasta sen käyttöön ja lämmöntuotantoon. Kirjan lopussa esitellään tämän panostusalueen projektien ensimmäisiä tuloksia.

Tekesin Puuenergian teknologiaohjelman tavoitteena on luoda teknis-taloudelliset edellytykset metsähakkeen käytön viisinkertaistamiseksi vuoteen 2003 mennessä eli lisätä käyttö 2,5 miljoonaan m3:iin. Vuonna 2003 metsähakkeella tuotettaisiin energiaa noin 5 TWh eli lähes 0,5 Mtoe. Näin nopea kasvu on mahdollista saavuttaa vain teollisuuden raakapuun hankintaan liittyvän puupolttoaineen tuotannon ja suurien käyttökohteiden kautta. Vaatimuksena on lisäksi, että metsähake tuotetaan ympäristöystävällisin menetelmin ja metsätalouden kestävyys turvaten. Rinnakkaisena tavoitteena on parantaa puupolttoaineitten laatua. Vuonna 2001 metsähakkeen käyttö oli 1,3 miljoonaa m3, mikä on noin puolet ohjelman tavoitteesta. Tekes on siis keskittänyt puuenergian kehitystoiminnan Puuenergian teknologiaohjelmaan, jonka kokonaisbudjetin arvio vuosille 1999-2003 on 42 M euroa . Vuoden 2002 heinäkuun loppuun alkuun mennessä oli käynnistynyt 35 tutkimuslaitos-, 35 yritys- ja 15 demonstraatiohanketta. Niiden kokonaislaajuus on 27,6 M euroa. Tässä ohjelman kolmannessa vuosikirjassa esitellään 35 käynnissä olevan projektin tuloksia vuosilta 2001-2002. Kirjan lopussa on myös katsaukset IEA:n bioenergiatoimintaan.

Tämä julkaisu on tehty Puuenergian teknologiaohjelmaan kuuluvaan projektiin "Metsähakkeen autokuljetusten logistiikan ja kuljetuskaluston kehittäminen" liittyvistä kuormantäyttökokeista.Kokeiden tavoitteena oli tehostaa hakeautojen kuormatilan käyttöä.Laboratoriokokeiden avulla tutkittiin ja kehitettiin teknisiä keinoja, joilla kuormausta voitiin nopeuttaa ja saatiin aikaan riittävän tiivis, koko kuormatilan täyttävä kuorma.VTT Energiassa suunniteltiin ja rakennettiin kuormantäyttökokeita varten koelaitteisto, jolla voitiin tutkia erilaisia kuormaukseen ja kuormantäyttöön liittyviä tekijöitä.Koelaitteistolla tutkittiin mm. hakkeen tiivistymistä kuormatilassa, kuormauksen tehontarvetta sekä kuormatilan täyttönopeutta. Tutkittavana materiaalina käytettiin sekä kosteaa että kuivaa hakkuutähdehaketta..Vuodenajan vaikutusta kuorman muodostumiseen tutkittiin tekemällä kuormantäyttökokeita sekä kesällä että talvella.Tutkittavat kuormausvaihtoehdot olivat: hakkeen puhaltaminen kuormatilaan, kuormaus hihnakuljettimella, kuormaus mekaanisella heittimellä varustetulla hihnakuljettimella sekä kauhakippaus.Kuormauskokeissa suurin kuormauskapasiteetti saavutettiin hihnakuljettimella.Sen kapasiteetti oli noin 14,5 tonnia kuiva-ainetta tunnissa.Seuraavaksi suurin kuormauskapasiteetti saavutettiin puhaltimella.Kuormauksen tehontarve oli pienin hihnakuljettimella, alle 5 kilowattia.Seuraavaksi pienin tehontarve oli hihnakuljetin + heitin -yhdistelmällä, jonka tehontarve oli likimain kolminkertainen hihnakuljettimeen verrattuna.Suurin hakkeen irtotiheys muodostui kuormiin, jotka kuormattiin mekaanisella heittimellä varustetulla hihnakuljettimella.Näissä kuormissa irtotiheys oli noin 15 % suurempi kuin puhalletuissa kuormissa.Hihnakuljettimella kuormattujen kuormien irtotiheys oli noin 10 % suurempi kuin puhalletuissa kuormissa.

VTT Energia on arvioinut biopolttoaineiden tuotannon ja suurkäytön mahdollisuuksia tulevaisuudessa Tekesin Climtech-ohjelman projektissa "Biopolttoaineiden merkitys kasvihuonekaasujen vähentämisessä. selvityksessä on tarkasteltu kahta vaihtoehtoa: Perusvaihtoehto on Uusiutuvien edistämisohjelman tavoitteiden mukainen ja maksimivaihtoehdossa pyritään maksimoimaan biopolttoaineiden käyttö.Pääpaino tässä tarkastelussa on puupolttoaineilla suurkäyttökohteissa, koska esimerkiksi kierrätyspolttoaineita ja puun pienkäyttöä on tarkasteltu tarkemmin omissa kohdissaan.
