Volcanic and pyrocumulonimbus (pyroCB) injections into the stratosphere perturb the aerosol layer and can have important radiative and chemical impacts on timescales spanning from months to several years. Repeated in situ balloon‐borne measurements of aerosol size and number concentration (>140 nm in diameter), ozone, water vapor, and atmospheric state variables made at midlatitudes in the southern hemisphere (SH) since 2019 enable us to better characterize such events. We use this record and coincident lidar extinction profiles to study several moderate to large stratospheric perturbations in the SH between 2019 and 2022 in detail, including the Australian New Year Super Outbreak (ANYSO) pyroCB in 2020. Median vertical profiles of aerosol number concentration, effective radius, and surface area in SH midlatitudes are also compared with those recorded in Northern Hemisphere midlatitudes under baseline conditions using an identical payload. These data depict the variability in stratospheric aerosol properties in the SH midlatitudes during this period and provide a benchmark for global sectional aerosol models. They reveal that sulfate particle size distributions under baseline conditions and in volcanic plumes are relatively well represented in the Community Earth System Model—Community Aerosol Radiation Model for Atmospheres (CESM‐CARMA), but more observations of biomass burning plumes are needed to improve model skill in simulating pyroCB. Comparisons between in situ and lidar observations also highlight a need for more observations of aerosol composition and refractive index in both fresh and aging biomass burning plumes. Plain Language Summary: Particles in the atmosphere scatter incoming sunlight and can influence surface temperatures. When large wildfire and volcanic plumes occasionally reach the upper atmosphere, they can alter the number and size of particles in this region of the atmosphere for months to years. Here, we describe results from repeated balloon‐based measurements, ground‐based measurements and model simulations of particle number, size, and other optical properties in the Southern Hemisphere between 2019 and 2022 to better understand the impact of such events. We also compare these measurements to similar ones made in the Northern Hemisphere to probe for interhemispheric differences. During the 2020 austral summer, the pristine atmosphere of the southwest Indian Ocean (SWIO) basin experienced significant perturbations. This study examines the variability of aerosols and carbon monoxide (CO) over this remote oceanic region and investigates the underlying processes in the upper troposphere–lower stratosphere (UT-LS). Aerosol profiles in January and February 2020 revealed a multi-layer structure in the tropical UT-LS. Numerical models – the FLEXible PARTicle dispersion model (FLEXPART) and the Modèle Isentropique de transport Mésoéchelle de l'Ozone Stratosphérique par Advection (MIMOSA) – indicated that the lower-stratospheric aerosol content was influenced by the intense and persistent stratospheric aerosol layer generated during the 2019–2020 extreme Australian bushfire events. A portion of this layer was transported eastward by prevailing easterly winds, leading to increased aerosol extinction profiles over Réunion on 27 and 28 January. Analysis of advected potential vorticity revealed isentropic transport of air masses containing Australian biomass burning aerosols from extratropical latitudes to Réunion at the 400 K isentropic level on 28 January. Interestingly, we found that biomass burning (BB) activity in eastern Africa, though weak during this season, significantly influenced (contributed up to 90 % of) the vertical distribution of CO and aerosols in the upper troposphere over the SWIO basin. Ground-based observations at Réunion confirmed the simultaneous presence of African and Australian aerosol layers. This study provides the first evidence of African BB emissions impacting the CO and aerosol distribution in the upper troposphere over the SWIO basin during the convective season. This study documents the complex variability of aerosols and carbon monoxide (CO) over this remote oceanic region and identifies the processes governing it in the upper troposphere – lower stratosphere (UT-LS). High CO concentration and dense aerosol layers at 1–6 km altitude in the free troposphere were observed over Rikubetsu, Japan, in ground-based Fourier transform spectrometer (FTS) and lidar measurements during 18–20 May 2016, days after intense wildfires east of Lake Baikal, Siberia. The column-averaged dry-air mole fraction of CO (XCO) was observed to be ∼150 ppb from 11:15 to 13:50 JST on 19 May, and peak aerosol optical depths (AODs) of 1.41 and 1.28 were observed at 15:40 JST 18 May and 11:20 JST 19 May, respectively. We used the HYSPLIT model to calculate five-day backward trajectories from Rikubetsu on May 18, 2016 at 2, 3 and 5 km altitude. The results show that the air parcels passed over the Siberian wildfires during 16–17 May. It was found that the high CO concentrations originated from forest fires were transported to the upper layers of Hokkaido. This will contribute to the understanding of the regional effects of air pollution in northern Japan due to air masses originating from forest fires. By combining these independent datasets such as AERONET aerosol optical thickness (AOT), MODIS fire data, and Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI) total CO columns, we confirmed that the lidar measurements of enhanced aerosol concentrations and FTS measurements of maximum XCO over Rikubetsu resulted from a persistent smoke plume transported from Siberian wildfires. Relatively large-scale forest fires have been frequently occurring in Siberia recently. However, the effects of CO and other gases released from them over northern Japan are not well known. We observed high concentrations of CO over the TCCON station in Rikubetsu, Japan, which we believe to be of forest fire origin. Therefore, we analyzed it as a case study to confirm its origin and impact on the upper atmosphere over northern Japan. Two elevated fine particulate mass concentration events were observed in a span of a week in northern Philippines on March of 2017. Results from chemical characterization, lidar observation, and model simulations of particulate matter show the high aerosol concentration events to be caused by long range transport (LRT) of anthropogenic pollutants from northern East Asia at the surface and biomass burning emission from Indochina aloft. In this study, we investigated the transport path of these LRT aerosols and estimated their direct radiative forcing. A strong Siberian high and a confluent flow induced by a continental high over the main Asian continent and a cyclonic circulation over the south of Japan produced a strong northerly wind that carried pollutants from northern East Asia to northern Philippines. At the same time, strong westerlies 2–4 km aloft carried biomass burning emissions from Indochina, which also had an impact on ground concentration. Mass extinction efficiency of LRT aerosols was estimated to be in the range of 2.06–6.44 m2g-1 with a mean value of 4.32 ± 1.32 m2g−1. In addition, we calculated the direct radiative forcing effect under clear sky condition and found that the transported aerosols had a mean net negative forcing (cooling) effect of −50.80 ± 12.38 Wm−2 and −11.98 ± 3.96 Wm−2 on surface and at the top of the atmosphere, respectively. Such pollutant transport during wintertime cold surges had been shown to reduce local surface pollutants in northern China. Consequently, its impacts shift to downwind regions as far as the Philippines.
