There is currently a growing demand for flexible strain sensors with high performance and water repellency for various applications such as human motion monitoring, sweat or humidity detection, and certain underwater tests. Among these strain sensors, paper-based ones have attracted increasing attention because they coincide with the future development trend of environment-friendly electronic products. However, paper-based electronics are easy to fail when they encounter water and are thus unable to be applied to humid or underwater circumstances. Herein, based on a strategy of coupling bionics inspired by lotus leaf and scorpion, which exhibit superhydrophobic characteristics and ultrasensitive vibration-sensing capacity, respectively, a paper-based strain sensor with high sensitivity and water repellency is successfully fabricated. As a result, the strain sensor exhibits a gauge factor of 263.34, a high strain resolution (0.098%), a fast response time (78 ms), excellent stability over 12,000 cycles, and a water contact angle of 164°. Owing to the bioinspired structures and function mechanisms, the paper-based strain sensor is suitable to not only serve as regular wearable electronics to monitor human motions in real-time but also to detect subtle underwater vibrations, demonstrating its great potential for numerous applications like wearable electronics, water environmental protection, and underwater robots.

Lots of beetles, moths, and birds in the natural world present stunning unique structural colors as well as excellent hydrophobic performances. Herein, a novel bioinspired variable structural-color film with organic-solvent responsiveness and surface hydrophobicity was fabricated. Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) provided structural color with left-handed helicity. PEG-PPG-PEG triblock copolymers (PPPTCs) were blended with CNCs, giving rise to the organic-solvent-responsive structural color and wider red-shift window of the reflectance peak. The color of the film could be regulated repeatedly under the stimulus of cyclohexanone with an obvious red shift up to 107 nm, corresponding to a macroscopic color change from blue to yellow. Low-surface-energy compound hexadecyltrimethoxysilane (HDTMS) was covalently grafted on the surface in a one-step method to introduce hydrophobicity, successfully preventing the effect of water on the ordered nanostructure. Based on the bionics principle, the as-prepared CNC/PPPTC nanocomposite films with variable structural colors and hydrophobicity are beneficial to their prospective applications in display screens, rewritable hydrophobic structural-color-changing paper, biomimetic sensors, and so forth.

A point-of-care, non-invasive, low-cost and sensitive nano-biodiagnostic is needed in today's age for rapid and accurate self-diagnosis as well as for the management of asthma, which is advantageous for low resource areas where asthma is prevalent. The objective of this research work was to prepare the miniature, nanosponges coated paper strip to detect the asthma using certain biomarkers present in exhaled air. The asthma biomarker, nitric oxide present in exhaled air (FeNO) was chosen, which on reaction with nanosponges of diazotizing agent gave significant color change. The pyromellitic anhydride cross-linked β-cyclodextrin-based nanosponges of sulfanilamide and N-(1-naphthyl) ethylenediamine dihydrochloride were prepared using a polymer condensation method and coated on Whatman filter paper strip (1 × 5 cm2). The thickness of coating was found to be uniform (400 ± 50 μm) which was determined using SEM analysis. The Hue-Saturation-Value scale was used to detect the color change using a smartphone app. We also investigated the performance of a nano-engineered paper strip by comparing this with commercially available, FDA approved FeNO analyzer-NIOX MINO. Our findings demonstrated no significant difference in results obtained using both the techniques. Besides good repeatability, the paper strip showed increasing saturation with NO concentration and the capacity to detect the biomarker down to mean value of 20.33 ppb level. The successful validation and method comparison indicated that a bioinspired strip can provide on-site analysis and daily monitoring for diagnosis and management of asthma.

Smart and green construction of noble metal nanostructures on two-dimensional nanomaterials-based flexible paper-like materials have gained extensive attention due to the formed hybrid papers have shown great promise in the applications of energy devices, sensing electronics, actuators, and chemical filters. Herein, a cost-effective and environment-friendly strategy to realize the spontaneous growth of noble metal nanoparticles (Au, Pd, and Pt) on flexible biomimetic MXene paper was proposed. The self-defined regulation of formed noble metal nanoparticles could be easily achieved, and the bimetallic (AuPt, PdPt) nanoparticles decorated MXene paper could be obtained at the mean time. These findings bring a simple, efficient and green way for constructing various hybrid MXene paper with outperforming electrocatalytic activities, which was demonstrated by the sensitive detection of superoxide (O2•-) and the good stability and reproducibility after a long-term usage. The outstanding analytical performance of the obtained AuPtNPs/MXene paper in O2•- monitoring leads to a satisfactory application in real-time extracellular biosensing. The investigation for spontaneous growth and regulation of noble metal nanoparticles on flexible biomimetic MXene paper exhibits a huge application potential for constructing high-performance flexible bioelectronics and energy-related devices.

Here we describe methods for creating tissue-mimicking ultrasound phantoms based on patient anatomy using a soft material called gel wax. To recreate acoustically realistic tissue properties, two additives to gel wax were considered: paraffin wax to increase acoustic attenuation, and solid glass spheres to increase backscattering. The frequency dependence of ultrasound attenuation was well described with a power law over the measured range of 3-10 MHz. With the addition of paraffin wax in concentrations of 0 to 8 w/w%, attenuation varied from 0.72 to 2.91 dB cmat 3 MHz and from 6.84 to 26.63 dB cmat 10 MHz. With solid glass sphere concentrations in the range of 0.025-0.9 w/w%, acoustic backscattering consistent with a wide range of ultrasonic appearances was achieved. Native gel wax maintained its integrity during compressive deformations up to 60%; its Young's modulus was 17.4 ± 1.4 kPa. The gel wax with additives was shaped by melting and pouring it into 3D printed moulds. Three different phantoms were constructed: a nerve and vessel phantom for peripheral nerve blocks, a heart atrium phantom, and a placental phantom for minimally-invasive fetal interventions. In the first, nerves and vessels were represented as hyperechoic and hypoechoic tubular structures, respectively, in a homogeneous background. The second phantom comprised atria derived from an MRI scan of a patient with an intervening septum and adjoining vena cavae. The third comprised the chorionic surface of a placenta with superficial fetal vessels derived from an image of a post-partum human placenta. Significance Artificial muscles are flexible actuators with capabilities similar to, or even beyond, natural muscles. They have been widely used in many applications as alternatives to more traditional rigid electromagnetic motors. Numerous studies focus on rapid design and low-cost fabrication of artificial muscles with customized performances. Here, we present an architecture for fluidic artificial muscles with unprecedented performance-to-cost ratio. These artificial muscles can be programed to produce not only a single contraction but also complex multiaxial actuation, and even controllable motion with multiple degrees of freedom. Moreover, a wide variety of materials and fabrication processes can be used to build the artificial muscles with other functions beyond basic actuation., Artificial muscles hold promise for safe and powerful actuation for myriad common machines and robots. However, the design, fabrication, and implementation of artificial muscles are often limited by their material costs, operating principle, scalability, and single-degree-of-freedom contractile actuation motions. Here we propose an architecture for fluid-driven origami-inspired artificial muscles. This concept requires only a compressible skeleton, a flexible skin, and a fluid medium. A mechanical model is developed to explain the interaction of the three components. A fabrication method is introduced to rapidly manufacture low-cost artificial muscles using various materials and at multiple scales. The artificial muscles can be programed to achieve multiaxial motions including contraction, bending, and torsion. These motions can be aggregated into systems with multiple degrees of freedom, which are able to produce controllable motions at different rates. Our artificial muscles can be driven by fluids at negative pressures (relative to ambient). This feature makes actuation safer than most other fluidic artificial muscles that operate with positive pressures. Experiments reveal that these muscles can contract over 90% of their initial lengths, generate stresses of ∼600 kPa, and produce peak power densities over 2 kW/kg—all equal to, or in excess of, natural muscle. This architecture for artificial muscles opens the door to rapid design and low-cost fabrication of actuation systems for numerous applications at multiple scales, ranging from miniature medical devices to wearable robotic exoskeletons to large deployable structures for space exploration.

The development of solid materials which are able to upconvert optical radiation into photons of higher energy is attractive for many applications such as photocatalytic cells and photovoltaic devices. However, to fully exploit triplet-triplet annihilation photon energy upconversion (TTA-UC), oxygen protection is imperative because molecular oxygen is an ultimate quencher of the photon upconversion process. So far, reported solid TTA-UC materials have focused mainly on elastomeric matrices with low barrier properties because the TTA-UC efficiency generally drops significantly in glassy and semicrystalline matrices. To overcome this limit, for example, combine effective and sustainable annihilation upconversion with exhaustive oxygen protection of dyes, we prepare a sustainable solid-state-like material based on nanocellulose. Inspired by the structural buildup of leaves in Nature, we compartmentalize the dyes in the liquid core of nanocellulose-based capsules which are then further embedded in a cellulose nanofibers (NFC) matrix. Using pristine cellulose nanofibers, a sustainable and environmentally friendly functional nanomaterial with ultrahigh barrier properties is achieved. Also, an ensemble of sensitizers and emitter compounds are encapsulated, which allow harvesting of the energy of the whole deep-red sunlight region. The films demonstrate excellent lifetime in synthetic air (20.5/79.5, O2/N2)-even after 1 h operation, the intensity of the TTA-UC signal decreased only 7.8% for the film with 8.8 μm thick NFC coating. The lifetime can be further modulated by the thickness of the protective NFC coating. For comparison, the lifetime of TTA-UC in liquids exposed to air is on the level of seconds to minutes due to fast oxygen quenching.

A biomimetic device for the reduction of Cu(II) to Cu(I) consisting of thioglycolic acid covalently grafted to cellulose paper was developed. The device displays exceptionally fast reducing properties allowing the reduction of Cu(II) in seconds and the formation of deeply colored Cu(I)-SCH2R complexes onto the cellulose paper. This biomimetic and biomaterial-based concept was exploited for the detection of copper in water samples with a limit of detection as low as 2 ppm.

A paper-based active tactile sensor -array (PATSA) with a dynamic sensitivity of 0.35 V N(-1) is demonstrated. The pixel position of the PATSA can be routed by analyzing the real-time recording voltages in the pressing process. The PATSA performance, which remains functional when removing partial areas, reveals that the device has a potential application to customized electronic skins.

Paper is used in various applications in biomedical research including diagnostics, separations, and cell cultures. Paper can be conveniently engineered due to its tunable and flexible nature, and is amenable to high-throughput sample preparation and analysis. Paper-based platforms are used to culture primary cells, tumor cells, patient biopsies, stem cells, fibroblasts, osteoblasts, immune cells, bacteria, fungi, and plant cells. These platforms are compatible with standard analytical assays that are typically used to monitor cell behavior. Due to its thickness and porous nature, there are no mass transport limitations to/from the cells in paper scaffolds. It is possible to pattern paper in different scales (micrometer to centimeter), generate modular configurations in 3D, fabricate multicellular and compartmentalized tissue mimetics for clinical applications, and recover cells from the scaffolds for further analysis. 3D paper constructs can provide physiologically relevant tissue models for personalized medicine. Layer-by layer strategies to assemble tissue-like structures from low-cost and biocompatible paper-based materials offer unique opportunities that include understanding fundamental biology, developing disease models, and assembling different tissues for organ-on-paper applications. Paper-based platforms can also be used for origami-inspired tissue engineering. This work provides an overview of recent progress in engineered paper-based biomaterials and platforms to culture and analyze cells.

Inspired by the morphology characteristics of the earthworms and the excellent deformability of origami structures, this research creates a novel earthworm-like locomotion robot through exploiting the origami techniques. In this innovation, appropriate actuation mechanisms are incorporated with origami ball structures into the earthworm-like robot 'body', and the earthworm's locomotion mechanism is mimicked to develop a gait generator as the robot 'centralized controller'. The origami ball, which is a periodic repetition of waterbomb units, could output significant bidirectional (axial and radial) deformations in an antagonistic way similar to the earthworm's body segment. Such bidirectional deformability can be strategically programmed by designing the number of constituent units. Experiments also indicate that the origami ball possesses two outstanding mechanical properties that are beneficial to robot development: one is the structural multistability in the axil direction that could contribute to the robot control implementation; and the other is the structural compliance in the radial direction that would increase the robot robustness and applicability. To validate the origami-based innovation, this research designs and constructs three robot segments based on different axial actuators: DC-motor, shape-memory-alloy springs, and pneumatic balloon. Performance evaluations reveal their merits and limitations, and to prove the concept, the DC-motor actuation is selected for building a six-segment robot prototype. Learning from earthworms' fundamental locomotion mechanism-retrograde peristalsis wave, seven gaits are automatically generated; controlled by which, the robot could achieve effective locomotion with qualitatively different modes and a wide range of average speeds. The outcomes of this research could lead to the development of origami locomotion robots with low fabrication costs, high customizability, light weight, good scalability, and excellent re-configurability.

We describe a latex wet coalescence extrusive coating method that produces up to 10-fold specific photosynthetic rate enhancements by nitrate-limited non-growing cyanobacteria deposited onto paper, hydrated and placed in the gas-phase of small tube photobioreactors. These plant leaf-like biocomposites were used to study the tolerance of cyanobacteria strains to illumination and temperature using a solar simulator. We report sustained CO2 absorption and O2 production for 500 h by hydrated gas-phase paper coatings of non-growing Synechococcus PCC7002, Synechocystis PCC6803, Synechocystis PCC6308, and Anabaena PCC7120. Nitrate-starved cyanobacteria immobilized on the paper surface by the latex binder did not grow out of the coatings into the bulk liquid. The average CO2 consumption rate in Synechococcus coatings is 5.67 mmol m(-2) h(-1) which is remarkably close to the rate reported in the literature for Arabidopsis thaliana leaves under similar experimental conditions (18 mmol m(-2) h(-1) ). We observed average ratios of oxygen production to carbon dioxide consumption (photosynthetic quotient, PQ) between 1.3 and 1.4, which may indicate a strong dependence on nitrate assimilation during growth and was used to develop a non-growth media formulation for intrinsic kinetics studies. Photosynthetic intensification factors (PIF) (O2 production by nitrate-limited cyanobacteria in latex coatings/O2 produced by nitrate-limited cell suspensions) in cyanobacteria biocomposites prepared from wet cell pellets concentrated 100- to 300-fold show 7-10 times higher specific reactivity compared to cells in suspension under identical nitrate-limited non-growth conditions. This is the first report of changes of cyanobacteria tolerance to temperature and light intensities after deposition as a thin coating on a porous matrix, which has important implications for gas-phase photobioreactor design using porous composite materials. Cryo-fracture SEM and confocal microscopy images of cell coating distribution on the paper biocomposite suggest that the spatial arrangement of the cells in the coating can affect photoreactivity. This technique could be used to fabricate very stable, multi-organism composite coatings on flexible microfluidic devices in the gas-phase capable of harvesting light in a broader range of wavelengths, to optimize thermotolerant, desiccation tolerant, or halotolerant cyanobacteria that produce O2 with secretion of liquid-fuel precursors synthesized from CO2 .

In this study, a novel microfluidic paper-based chemiluminescence analytical device (μPCAD) with a simultaneous, rapid, sensitive and quantitative response for glucose and uric acid was designed. This novel lab-on-paper biosensor is based on oxidase enzyme reactions (glucose oxidase and urate oxidase, respectively) and the chemiluminescence reaction between a rhodanine derivative and generated hydrogen peroxide in an acid medium. The possible chemiluminescence assay principle of this μPCAD is explained. We found that the simultaneous determination of glucose and uric acid could be achieved by differing the distances that the glucose and uric acid samples traveled. This lab-on-paper biosensor could provide reproducible results upon storage at 4 °C for at least 10 weeks. The application test of our μPCAD was then successfully performed with the simultaneous determination of glucose and uric acid in artificial urine. This study shows the successful integration of the μPCAD and the chemiluminescence method will be an easy-to-use, inexpensive, and portable alternative for point-of-care monitoring.
