The hadopelagic environment remains highly understudied due to the inherent difficulties in sampling at these depths. The use of sediment environmental DNA (eDNA) can overcome some of these restrictions as settled and preserved DNA represent an archive of the biological communities. We use sediment eDNA to assess changes in the community within one of the world's most productive open‐ocean ecosystems: the Atacama Trench. The ecosystems around the Atacama Trench have been intensively fished and are affected by climate oscillations, but the understanding of potential impacts on the marine community is limited. We sampled five sites using sediment cores at water depths from 2400 to ~8000 m. The chronologies of the sedimentary record were determined using 210Pbex. Environmental DNA was extracted from core slices and metabarcoding was used to identify the eukaryote community using two separate primer pairs for different sections of the 18S rRNA gene (V9 and V7) effectively targeting pelagic taxa. The reconstructed communities were similar among markers and mainly composed of chordates and members of the Chromista kingdom. Alpha diversity was estimated for all sites in intervals of 15 years (from 1842 to 2018), showing a severe drop in biodiversity from 1970 to 1985 that aligns with one of the strongest known El Niño events and extensive fishing efforts during the time. We find a direct impact of sea surface temperature on the community composition over time. Fish and cnidarian read abundance was examined separately to determine whether fishing had a direct impact, but no direct relation was found. These results demonstrate that sediment eDNA can be a valuable emerging tool providing insight in historical perspectives on ecosystem developments. Our ability to assess biodiversity at relevant spatial and temporal scales for informing management is of increasing importance given this is foundational to identify and mitigate the impacts of global change. Collecting baseline information and tracking ecological changes are particularly important for areas experiencing rapid changes and representing data gaps such as Arctic marine ecosystems. Environmental DNA has the potential to provide such data. We extracted environmental DNA from 90 surface sediment samples to assess eukaryote diversity around Greenland and Svalbard using two separate primer pairs amplifying different sections of the 18S rRNA gene. We detected 27 different phyla and 99 different orders and found that temperature and the change in temperature explained the most variation in the community in a single linear model, while latitude, sea ice cover and change in temperature explained the most variation in the community when assessed by individual non-linear models. We identified potential indicator taxa for Arctic climate change, including a terebellid annelid worm. In conclusion, our study demonstrates that environmental DNA offers a feasible method to assess biodiversity and identifies warming as a key driver of differences in biodiversity across these remote ecosystems. Anthropogenic impacts on marine ecosystems have led to a decline of biodiversity across the oceans, threatening invaluable ecosystem services on which we depend. Ecological temporal data to track changes in diversity are relatively rare, and the few long-term datasets that exist often only date back a few decades or less. Here, we use eDNA taken from dated sediment cores to investigate changes over approximately the last 100 years of metazoan communities in native (Cymodocea nodosa and Posidonia oceanica) and exotic (Halophila stipulacea) seagrass meadows within the eastern Mediterranean Sea, at two locations in Greece and two in Cyprus. Overall, metazoan communities showed a high turnover of taxa during the past century, where losses of individual taxa in a seagrass meadow were compensated by the arrival of new taxa, probably due to the arrival of exotic species introduced in the Mediterranean Sea from the Suez Canal or the Gibraltar Strait. Specifically, bony fishes (Class Actinopteri) and soft corals (Class Anthozoa) presented significantly higher richness in the past (before the 1980s) than in the most recent time periods (from 1980–2017) and some Cnidarian orders were solely found in the past, whereas sponges and Calanoids (Class Hexanauplia), an order of copepods, showed an increase in richness since the 1980s. Moreover, the Phyla Porifera, Nematoda and the Classes Staurozoa, Hydrozoa and Ophiuroidea were detected in P. oceanica meadows but not in C. nodosa and H. stipulacea, which led to P. oceanica meadows having twice the richness of other seagrasses. The greater richness resulted from the more complex habitat provided by P. oceanica. The combination of eDNA and sediment cores allowed us to reconstruct temporal patterns of metazoan community diversity and provides a novel approach to follow natural communities back in time in the absence of time series and baseline data. The ongoing loss of P. oceanica meadows, likely to be compounded with future warming, might lead to a major loss of biodiversity and the replacement by other seagrass species, whether native or exotic, does not compensate for the loss. Deoxygenation in coastal and open‐ocean ecosystems rarely exists in isolation but occurs concomitantly with acidification. Here, we first combine meta‐data of experimental assessments from across the globe to investigate the potential interactive impacts of deoxygenation and acidification on a broad range of marine taxa. We then characterize the differing degrees of deoxygenation and acidification tested in our dataset using a ratio between the partial pressure of oxygen and carbon dioxide (pO2/pCO2) to assess how biological processes change under an extensive, yet diverse range of pO2 and pCO2 conditions. The dataset comprised 375 experimental comparisons and revealed predominantly additive but variable effects (91.7%, additive; 6.0%, synergistic; and 2.3%, antagonistic) of the dual stressors, yielding negative impacts across almost all responses examined. Our data indicate that the pO2/pCO2‐ratio offers a simplified metric to characterize the extremity of the concurrent stressors and shows that more severe impacts occurred when ratios represented more extreme deoxygenation and acidification conditions. Importantly, our analysis highlights the need to assess the concurrent impacts of deoxygenation and acidification on marine taxa and that assessments considering the impact of O2 depletion alone will likely underestimate the impacts of deoxygenation events and their ecosystem‐wide consequences. Prochlorococcus and Synechococcus are pico-sized cyanobacteria that play a fundamental role in oceanic primary production, being particularly important in warm, nutrient-poor waters. Their potential response to nutrient enrichment is expected to be contrasting and to differ from larger phytoplankton species. Here, we used a metagenomic approach to characterize the responses to nutrient enrichment in the community of picocyanobacteria and to analyze the cyanophage response during a mesocosms experiment in the oligotrophic Red Sea. Natural picoplankton community was dominated by Synechococcus clade II, with marginal presence of Prochlorococcus (0.3% bacterial reads). Increased nutrient input triggered a fast Synechococcus bloom, with clade II being the dominant, with no response of Prochlorococcus growth. The largest bloom developed in the mesocosms receiving a single initial input of nutrients, instead of daily additions. The relative abundances of cyanophage sequences in cellular metagenomes increased during the experiment from 12.6% of total virus reads up to 40% in the treatment with the largest Synechococcus bloom. The subsequent collapse of the bloom pointed to a cyanophage infection on Synechococcus that reduced its competitive capacity, and was then followed by a diatom bloom. The cyanophage attack appears to have preferentially affected the most abundant Synechococcus clade II, increasing the evenness within the host population. High solar radiation along with extreme transparency leads to high penetration of solar radiation in the Red Sea, potentially harmful to biota inhabiting the upper water column, including zooplankton. Here we show, based on experimental assessments of solar radiation dose-mortality curves on eight common taxa, the mortality of zooplankton in the oligotrophic waters of the Red Sea to increase steeply with ambient levels of solar radiation in the Red Sea. Responses curves linking solar radiation doses with zooplankton mortality were evaluated by exposing organisms, enclosed in quartz bottles, allowing all the wavelengths of solar radiation to penetrate, to five different levels of ambient solar radiation (100%, 21.6%, 7.2%, 3.2% and 0% of solar radiation). The maximum mortality rates under ambient solar radiation levels averaged (±standard error of the mean, SEM) 18.4±5.8% h−1, five-fold greater than the average mortality in the dark for the eight taxa tested. The UV-B radiation required for mortality rates to reach ½of maximum values averaged (±SEM) 12±5.6 h−1% of incident UVB radiation, equivalent to the UV-B dose at 19.2±2.7 m depth in open coastal Red Sea waters. These results confirm that Red Sea zooplankton are highly vulnerable to ambient solar radiation, as a consequence of the combination of high incident radiation and high water transparency allowing deep penetration of damaging UV-B radiation. These results provide evidence of the significance of ambient solar radiation levels as a stressor of marine zooplankton communities in tropical, oligotrophic waters. Because the oligotrophic ocean extends across 70% of the ocean surface, solar radiation can be a globally-significant stressor for the ocean ecosystem, by constraining zooplankton use of the upper levels of the water column and, therefore, the efficiency of food transfer up the food web in the oligotrophic ocean. Aim The emission of chlorofluorocarbon compounds eroded the ozone layer, raising incident ultraviolet B radiation to levels that affect biota. However, the role of UVB radiation (280-315 nm), which remains elevated to date, as a possible driver of the widespread global deterioration of marine ecosystems has not yet been fully quantified. In this paper we assess the magnitude of the impacts of elevated UVB radiation and evaluate the relative sensitivity to UVB across marine taxa and processes. Location The analyses presented are based on 1784 experimental assessments of the impacts of UVB performed with natural radiation and organisms from different geographical areas, as well as with artificial radiation and cultured organisms at many laboratories around the world. Methods First we compiled the published literature concerning experimental evaluation of the impacts of UVB on marine biota. Then a meta-analysis was conducted with the data set obtained to evaluate the responses of marine organisms and processes to enhanced and reduced UVB levels. Results Increased UVB radiation leads to a sharp increase in mortality rates across marine taxa, with protists, corals, crustaceans and fish eggs and larvae being most sensitive. A general relationship between relative changes in UVB doses and mortality rates was developed. This relationship can help assess the effects of changes in incident UVB radiation (past, present or future) on marine organisms. Main conclusions This meta-analysis demonstrates that mortality rates of marine biota increase rapidly in response to elevated UVB radiation. The enhanced mortality rates associated with currently elevated UVB levels may represent a major threat to marine biota, possibly underlying recent widespread declines in the abundance of marine organisms ranging from corals to fish and krill. Defining biogeographic provinces to understand the history and evolution of communities associated with a given kind of ecosystem is challenging and usually requires a priori assumptions to be made. We applied network theory, a holistic and exploratory method, to the most complete database of faunal distribution available on oceanic hydrothermal vents, environments which support fragmented and unstable ecosystems, to infer the processes driving their worldwide biogeography. Besides the identification of robust provinces, the network topology allowed us to identify preferential pathways that had hitherto been overlooked. These pathways are consistent with the previously proposed hypothesis of a role of plate tectonics in the biogeographical history of hydrothermal vent communities. A possible ancestral position of the Western Pacific is also suggested for the first time. Finally, this work provides an innovative example of the potential of network tools to unravel the biogeographic history of faunal assemblages and to supply comprehensive information for the conservation and management of biodiversity. Contemporary impacts of anthropogenic climate change on ecosystems are increasingly being recognized. Documenting the extent of these impacts requires quantitative tools for analyses of ecological observations to distinguish climate impacts in noisy data and to understand interactions between climate variability and other drivers of change. To assist the development of reliable statistical approaches, we review the marine climate change literature and provide suggestions for quantitative approaches in climate change ecology. We compiled 267 peer-reviewed articles that examined relationships between climate change and marine ecological variables. Of the articles with time series data ( n = 186), 75% used statistics to test for a dependency of ecological variables on climate variables. We identified several common weaknesses in statistical approaches, including marginalizing other important non-climate drivers of change, ignoring temporal and spatial autocorrelation, averaging across spatial patterns and not reporting key metrics. We provide a list of issues that need to be addressed to make inferences more defensible, including the consideration of (i) data limitations and the comparability of data sets; (ii) alternative mechanisms for change; (iii) appropriate response variables; (iv) a suitable model for the process under study; (v) temporal autocorrelation; (vi) spatial autocorrelation and patterns; and (vii) the reporting of rates of change. While the focus of our review was marine studies, these suggestions are equally applicable to terrestrial studies. Consideration of these suggestions will help advance global knowledge of climate impacts and understanding of the processes driving ecological change. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article discusses a research study on seagrass genus Posidonia (P.) and their evolutionary history being considered as important to coastal ecosystems for supporting biomass production and biodiversity. Ancient Posidonia species are known as the most ancient seagrass genera, of which P. oceanica is said to be endemic to the Mediterranean Sea with eight taxa in the Southern Hemisphere displaying a constrasting disjunct biogeogeographic pattern. The phynology based on nuclear marker (rRNA-ITS) showed a split in the northern and southern taxa and separation of two Australian complexes. Other findings include the discrimination of four lineages among the seven morphologically described Australian species and evolutionary rate of organelle and mitochondrial markers.

We examined the rhizosphere structure of 14 seagrass meadows (seven mixed, three Enhalus acoroides, two Zostera japonica, one Thalassia hemprichii, and one Halophila ovalis) in the Philippines and Vietnam and tested their effect on sediment redox potential by comparing the redox potential in vegetated vs unvegetated sediments. The effect of seagrass photosynthesis on sediment redox potential was tested in an E. acoroides meadow during a short-term (2-day) clipping experiment. In all the meadows, the centroidal depth (i.e., depth comprising 50%) of seagrass belowground biomass was within the top 15 cm sediment layer. Redox potentials in vegetated sediments tended to be higher than those in adjacent unvegetated ones; sediment redox potential anomaly ranged from -61 to 133 mV across the meadows. The centroidal depths of positive redox potential anomaly and seagrass root biomass were significantly correlated across the meadows investigated (type II regression analysis, slope=0.90, lower confidence limit [CL]=0.42 upper CL=1.82, R²=0.59, p< 0.01). Experimental removal of E. acoroides leaves resulted in a decrease in rhizosphere redox potential by 20 mV, further confirming the positive effect of seagrass roots and rhizomes on sediment redox potential and, thus, the general conditions for microbial processes in the coastal zone. An analysis of the contents and conclusions of the papers contained in this issue ( Hydrobiologia Volume xxx) suggests that a new vision is taking shape that may correspond to an emerging new paradigm in the way we understand and manage coastal eutrophication. This new paradigm emphasizes its global dimension and the connections with other global environmental pressures, and re-evaluates the targets of remedial actions and policies. Eutrophication research must evolve toward a more integrative, ecosystem perspective which requires that it be extended to include impacts beyond primary producers and to examine possible cascading effects and feedbacks involving other components of the ecosystem. A quantitative framework that incorporates the interacting top-down and bottom-up effects in eutrophication models must be urgently developed to guide diagnostics and establish targets to mitigate coastal eutrophication. The required macroscopic view must also be extended to the managerial and policy frameworks addressing eutrophication, through the development of policies that examine activities in the environment in an integrative, rather than sectorial, manner. Recent evidence of complex responses of coastal ecosystems to nutrient reduction requires that management targets, and the policies that support them, be reconsidered to recognize the complexities of the responses of coastal ecosystems to reduced nutrient inputs, including non-linear responses and associated thresholds. While a predictive framework for the complex trajectories of coastal ecosystems subject to changes in nutrient inputs is being developed, the assessment of managerial actions should be reconsidered to focus on the consideration of the status achieved as the outcome of nutrient reduction plans against that possibly derived from a ‘do nothing’ scenario. A proper assessment of eutrophication and the efforts to mitigate it also requires that eutrophication be considered as a component of global change, in addressing both its causes and its consequences, and that the feedbacks between other components of global change (e.g., climate change, overfishing, altered biogeochemical cycles, etc.) be explicitly considered in designing eutrophication research and in managing the problem. The implicit assumption of many scientific and regulatory frameworks that ecosystems impacted by human pressures may be reverted to their original condition by suppressing the pressure was tested using coastal eutrophication. The response to nutrient abatement of four thoroughly studied coastal ecosystems that received increased nutrient inputs between the 1970s and the 1980s showed that the trajectories of these ecosystems were not directly reversible. All four ecosystems displayed convoluted trajectories that failed to return to the reference status upon nutrient reduction. This failure is proposed to result from the broad changes in environmental conditions, all affecting ecosystem dynamics, that occurred over the 30 years spanning from the onset of eutrophication to the reduction of nutrient levels. Abstract: Ecosystem transformation and depletion of natural resources by human activity with associated increase in species extinctions renders research to understand the consequences of these transformations and design strategies to conserve biological diversity a fundamental priority. Since the introduction of the term biodiversity, accumulated research in this field has expanded exponentially. An analysis of existing literature was conducted to examine patterns in the resulting research effort. The analysis, conducted using the Web of Science (WoS), identified 13336 published articles between 1987 and 2005 concerning biodiversity research. Research efforts are increasing, with 72% of the research effort addressing terrestrial ecosystems. Most of the research is experimental in nature, with few models developed, and focuses on species. Despite constant technical improvements, research on genetic diversity still represents a minor component. Research on different systems is disseminated through different publication outlets, fragmenting the community and derived knowledge. Reported results, here measured as strength of the correlation between biodiversity and ecosystem function, do not differ across ecosystems but are stronger when the study focused on functional groups instead of species level. Collaborative efforts remain limited, as the average number of authors per paper is not increasing with time, unlike patterns in other disciplines. We conducted a 2-year in situ experiment to test the capacity of iron additions to reverse the decline experienced by a Posidonia oceanica meadow colonizing carbonate, iron poor sediment. Iron additions improved the sediment conditions that support seagrass growth by decreasing the sediment sulfide concentration and sulfate reduction rates, and decreased sulfide intrusion into the plants. Iron additions for 2 years did not significantly change survivorship of shoots present at the onset of the experiment, but significantly increased shoot recruitment and survivorship of shoots recruited during the experiment. After 2 years, iron additions reversed seagrass decline and yielded positive growth rates of shoots relative to control populations where seagrass continued to decline. This research demonstrates that seagrass decline in carbonate sediments may be reversed by targeting critical processes such are sediment sulfide pools and seagrass nutritional status, controlling the functioning of the ecosystem. This article presents a case study regarding the artificial neural network analysis of factors controlling ecosystem metabolism in coastal systems. Knowing the metabolic balance of an ecosystem is of utmost importance in finding whether the system is a net source or net sink of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. However, getting these estimates often demands significant amounts of time and manpower. The study presents a simplified way to obtain an estimation of ecosystem metabolism and used artificial neural networks.

Recent, parallel developments in the study of freshwater and marine ecosystems have provided evidence that net heterotrophic systems (those in which respiratory organic matter destruction exeeds photosynthetic production) are more prevalent than hitherto believed, including most rivers, oligo- to mesotrophic lakes and some oligotrophic regions of the ocean. In parallel, these aquatic ecosystems have been shown to act as CO2 sources to the atmosphere, as expected from the heterotrophic nature of the communities they contain. The prevalence of net heterotrophic aquatic ecosystems indicates that they must receive significant inputs of organic carbon from adjacent ecosystems, assigning an important role to the lateral exchanges of carbon between land and aquatic ecosystems, between coastal and open ocean ecosystems, as well as internal redistribution within large or complex aquatic ecosystems in determining their metabolic status and the gaseous exchange with the atmosphere. The examination of the carbon budget of ecosystems requires, therefore, an integrative approach that accounts for exchanges between compartments often studied in isolation. These recent findings conform a new paradigm of the functioning of aquatic ecosystems, and the metabolic connectivity between ecosystems in the biosphere. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A set of eight large (20 m³) mesocosms were moored in Johnson's Dock (62°39.576'S, 60°22.408'W, Livingston Island, Antarctica) to experimentally generate a gradient of phytoplankton biomass and production in order to test the extent of coupling between bacteria (heterotrophic Bacteria and Archaea) and phytoplankton, as well as the role of bacterial losses to protist grazers. This was achieved by imposing four light levels (100%, 50%, 25%, and 10%) in the presence or absence of nutrient additions (0.1 mol NH4Cl, 0.1 mol F6Na2Si, and 0.01 mol KH2PO4 per day per mesocosm). The experimental treatments resulted in a broad range of chlorophyll a (Chl a) (0.31-93.5 µg Chl a L-1) and average primary production rates, while bacteria responded in a much narrower range of biomass (3-447 µg C L-1) and production (0.21-15.71 µg C L-1d-1). Results confirm that bacteria--chlorophyll and bacterial production--primary production relationships in the Southern Ocean differ from the typical relationships applicable to aquatic ecosystems elsewhere. Bacteria respond to phytoplankton blooms, but they respond so weakly that bacterial production represents a small percentage of primary production (1-10%). Although other mechanisms might also contribute to the weak bacterial response to phytoplankton blooms, we demonstrate that the reason for it is likely the tight control of bacterial populations by their predators. Protist grazers are able to sustain faster growth rates in the cold waters of the Southern Ocean than are bacteria, thereby preventing bacteria from responding to phytoplankton blooms more forcibly. The proposed threshold planktonic gross primary production (GPP) value for O2 of 2.05 mmol m-3 d-1 separating net heterotrophic from net autotrophic communities in the Southern Ocean was tested experimentally using large mesocosms (20 m³). A set of eight mesocosms was moored in Johnson's Dock (62°39.576′S, 60°22.408′W, Livingston Island, Antarctica) and a gradient of GPP was experimentally generated by imposing four light levels (100%, 50%, 25%, and 10%) in the presence or absence of nutrient additions (0.1 mol NH4Cl, 0.1 mol of F6Na2Si, and 0.01 mol KH2PO4 per mesocosm per day). The experimental treatments resulted in a broad range of chlorophyll a (Chl a) (0.31-93.5 mg m-3) and GPP (O2, 0.17-16.7 mmol m-3 d-1). Community respiration (R) increased with increasing GPP, but not proportionately, resulting in a range of P:R ratios ranging from 0.12 in intensely shaded communities to 1.3 in those receiving high irradiance and nutrient additions, with the compensation irradiance for community metabolism (i.e., percentage irradiance at P : R = 1) being reached at 83% of the ambient irradiance. The experimental estimate of the threshold GPP for metabolic balance of the community investigated (i.e., P:R = 1) was 2.2 (SE ± 0.016) mmol O2 m-3 d-1, thereby validating the estimate of 2.05 mmol O2 m-3 d-1 derived in the past from comparative analyses of planktonic metabolism across the Southern Ocean. The dynamics of the nutrient pools and their stoichiometry as well as their control by ecosystem metabolism (benthic and planktonic) and benthic-pelagic exchanges (sedimentation rates and sediment waterfluxes) were examined in the Mediterranean littoral (Blanes Bay, NE Spain). Dissolved organic nitrogen comprised about half of the nitrogen present in the water column and the carbon pool was dominated by the inorganic pool (95% of the carbon present in the water column). The dissolved and particulate organic pools were deficient in P relative to C and N, indicating a rapid recycling of P from organic matter. The pelagic compartment was heterotrophic, supported by significant allochthonous inputs of land material, which also contributed greatly to the sedimentary inputs (37% of total sedimenting carbon). In contrast, the benthic compartment was autotrophic, with the excess net benthic community production balancing the deficit in pelagic community production, leading to metabolic equilibrium at the station studied. Sedimentary inputs of nitrogen, phosphorus and silicon exceeded the benthic release, indicating that the benthic compartment acted as a sink for nutrients, consistent with its autotrophic nature. Carbon inputs to the benthic compartment also exceeded requirements, due to the allochthonous subsidies to the system, so that the benthic compartment stored or exported organic carbon. We studied the effect of nutrient inputs on the carbon (C) budget of rocky shore communities using a set of eight large experimental mesocosms. The mesocosms received a range of inorganic nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) additions, at an N:P ratio of 16. These additions were designed to elevate the background concentration, relative to that in eutrophic Oslofjord (Norway) waters, by 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32 μmol dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN)l-1 (and the corresponding P increase). Two unamended mesocosms were used as controls. The nutrients were added continuously for 27 months before gross primary production (GPP), respiration (R), net community production (NCP), and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) production were assessed for the dominant algal species (Fucus serratus) and for the whole experimental ecosystem. Inputs and outputs of DOC and particulate organic carbon (POC) from the mesocosms were also quantified. The F. serratus communities were generally autotrophic (average P/R ratio = 1.33 ± 0.12), with the GPP independent of the nutrient inputs to the mesocosms, and maintained a high net DOC production during both day (0.026 ± 0.008 g C m-2 h-1) and night (0.015 ± 0.004 g C m-2 h-1). All the experimental rocky shore ecosystems were autotrophic (P/R ratio = 2.04 ± 0.28), and neither macroalgal biomass nor production varied significantly with increasing nutrient inputs. Most of the excess production from these autotrophic ecosystems was exported from the systems as DOC, which accounted for 69% and 58% of the NCP of the dominant community and the experimental ecosystem, respectively, the rest being lost as POC. High DOC release and subsequent export from the highly energetic environments occupied by rocky shore communities may prevent the development of eutrophication symptoms and render these communities resistant to eutrophication. The response of heterotrophic bacterioplankton to the addition of macrophytic dissolved organic matter (DOM) and temperature was investigated in the Red Sea. We added 40 μmol C L−1 of leachates obtained from seagrass and mangrove leaves to natural bacterial communities, incubated them at three temperatures (25.5°C found in situ plus 3°C below and above that value) and monitored the microbial and biogeochemical responses over 4 d. Seagrass and mangrove DOM, important allochthonous sources in tropical oligotrophic regions, had distinct chemical characteristics compared to unamended seawater, with mangrove substrates containing comparatively more nitrogen and protein‐like fluorescent DOM than seagrass. Specific growth rates (μ) increased twofold in the seagrass and mangrove treatments (1.0 and 0.8 d−1, respectively) relative to the seawater control (0.4 d−1). The biomass of heterotrophic bacteria generally reflected μ changes, reaching maximum values of 16.8 and 17.3 μg C L−1 in the seagrass and mangrove treatments, respectively, compared to just 2.6 μg C L−1 in seawater. The increase in μ values due to experimental warming followed the metabolic theory of ecology, mostly because of enhanced exoenzymatic activity, while cell size decreased as predicted by the temperature–size rule (mean −3% per °C increase). Although the labile nature of the specific seagrass and mangrove DOM leachates was clearly demonstrated, we conclude that tropical heterotrophic bacteria may have limited capability to increase their biomass as a consequence of future warming, even in the presence of high loadings of macrophytic DOM. The article discusses research investigating the pace of shifting climates in marine and terrestrial ecosystems. The authors note that climate change challenges organisms to adapt or migrate to track changes in their environments in space and time. The study's authors used two measures taken from the analyses of global temperature over the past 50 years to describe the pace of climate change that species should track, including the velocity of climate change and the shift in seasonal timing of temperatures. Results showing both measures are higher in the ocean than on land at various latitudes and the potential impact of greater velocities of climate change and seasonal shifts on marine biodiversity are discussed.

Abstract: Mesopelagic prokaryotic communities have often been assumed to be relatively inactive in comparison to those from epipelagic waters, and therefore unresponsive to the presence of nearby upwelled waters. We have studied the zonal (shelf-ocean), latitudinal, and depth (epipelagic–mesopelagic) variability of microbial assemblages in the NW Africa–Canary Islands coastal-transition zone (CTZ). Vertical profiles of bacterial bulk and single-cell activity through the epi- and mesopelagic waters were combined with point measurements of bacterial respiration, leucine-to-carbon conversion factors and leucine-to-thymidine incorporation ratios. The overall picture that emerges from our study is that prokaryotes in the mesopelagic zone of this area are less abundant than in the epipelagic but have comparable levels of activity. The relationship between prokaryotes and heterotrophic nanoflagellates, their main predators, remains constant throughout the water column, further contradicting the assumption that deep ocean bacterial communities are mostly inactive. Both bulk and single-cell activity showed clear differences between stations, with higher mesopelagic activities closer to the shelf or affected by upwelling features. We also tested whether differences in microbial function between stations could be related to differences in bacterial community structure, and conclude that bacterial communities are very similar at similar depths in the deep ocean, even if the stations present order-of-magnitude differences in bacterial function. There is an apparent gap between the prominence of present theoretical frameworks involving ecological thresholds and regime shifts, and the paucity of efforts to conduct simple tests and quantitative inferences on the actual appearance of such phenomena in ecological data. A wide range of statistical methods and analytical techniques are now available that render these questions tractable, some of them even dating back half a century. Yet, their application has been sparse and confined within a narrow subset of cases of ecological regime shifts. Our objective is to raise awareness on the range of techniques available, and to their principles and limitations, to promote a more operational approach to the identification of ecological thresholds and regime shifts.
