We investigated the generation of frequency up-converted femtosecond laser pulses by nondegenerate cascaded four-wave mixing (CFWM) in a bismuth-oxide glass (BI glass). Broad-bandwidth light pulses with different propagation directions were simultaneously obtained by using two small-angle crossing femtosecond laser pulses in BI glass. Experimental results show that the threshold power density for the generation of broad-bandwidth femtosecond pulses in BI glass is one order of magnitude lower than that in fused silica.

A strong coherent effect was observed in the monochromatic optical Kerr effect (OKE) experiment of a Bi2O3-B2O3-SiO2 oxide glass (BI glass). To eliminate the influence of the coherent effect, we proposed a simple femtosecond two-color OKE measurement method with wavelength tunability using a supercontinuum. In the two-color OKE measurement the third order nonlinear susceptibility of the BI glass was measured to be 1.64 × 10-13 electrostatic units (esu), in which the influence of the coherent effect was eliminated. The result is smaller than that obtained in a previous monochromatic OKE experiment. We have demonstrated the high time-resolved three-dimensional (3-D) imaging using a chirped supercontinuum (SC) and an ultrafast optical Kerr gate (OKG) generated with a femtosecond laser, in which a sapphire plate and a \Bi2\O3\–\B2\O3\–\SiO2 oxide glass (BI glass) were used to generate the chirped SC and the optical Kerr gate, respectively. The experimental results show that the 3-D imaging using BI glass offers better temporal and longitudinal spatial resolution compared with \CS2. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
