Reprocessed X-ray radiation from active galactic nuclei (AGN) carries important information about the properties of the circumnuclear material around the black hole. The X-ray photons travel from the very centre of the system and interact with that material often producing strong emission lines. The |$\rm {Fe\, K\alpha }$| Compton shoulder (CS) is formed by fluorescent |$\rm {Fe\, K\alpha }$| photons that perform Compton scatterings with the intercepting material and lose energy to form the distinct shoulder shape. In this work, we use the ray-tracing code RefleX to explore how the physical properties of the medium, as well as its geometry, affect the shape of the CS. We start by running simulations using a simple toroidal reflector, to test the effect of the metal composition, metallicity, column density, dust presence and velocity on the |$\rm {Fe\, K\alpha }$| line, and its CS. We confirm that the shape of the CS is sensitive to the optical depth of the intercepting medium, which can be regulated by either changing the metal composition or the line-of-sight column density of the circumnuclear material. Next, we create a series of models, which feature different geometrical configurations of dust and gas, and explore how the CS is affected by such configurations finding that components that can regulate the line-of-sight column density affect the |$\rm {Fe\, K\alpha }$| and its CS. Finally, we test whether observatories such as the recently launched XRISM and future Athena will make the CS a useful spectral feature of nearby AGN, by applying specific models on simulated spectra of the Circinus galaxy. One of the most promising methods to measure the spin of an accreting black hole is fitting the broad iron K |$\alpha$| line in the X-ray spectrum. The line profile also depends on the geometry of the hard X-ray emitting corona. To put constraints on the black hole spin and corona geometry, it is essential to understand how do they affect the iron K |$\alpha$| line emissivity profile. In this work, we present calculations of the illumination and the iron K |$\alpha$| emissivity profiles performed with the Monte Carlo GR radiative transfer code monk. We focus on distinction between the illumination and emissivity profiles, which is in most previous studies neglected. We show that especially for the case of black hole X-ray binaries (BHXRBs), the difference is very large. For active galactic nuclei (AGNs), the emissivity profile has a more similar shape as the illumination profile, but it is notably steeper in the innermost region within a few gravitational radii. We find out that the different behaviour between AGN and BHXRB discs is due to the different energy spectra of the illuminating radiation. This suggests that the emissivity profile of the iron K |$\alpha$| line cannot be determined by black hole spin and corona geometry alone and the energy spectrum of the illuminating radiation has to be taken into account. The fundamental plane of black hole activity is a very important tool to study accretion and jets. However, we found that the SEDs of AGNs and XRBs are different in the 2–10 keV energy band, and it seems inappropriate to use 2–10 keV X-ray luminosities to study the fundamental plane. In this work, we use the luminosity near the peak of the blackbody radiation of the active galactic nuclei and black hole binaries to replace the 2–10 keV luminosity. We re-explore the fundamental plane of black hole activity by using the 2500 A ˚ luminosity as the peak luminosity of the blackbody radiation of AGNs and 1 keV luminosity as the peak luminosity of the blackbody radiation of XRBs. We compile samples of black hole binaries and active galactic nuclei with luminosity near the peak luminosity of blackbody radiation and study the fundamental plane between radio luminosity ( L R ), the peak luminosity of blackbody radiation ( L peak ), and black hole mass ( M BH ). We find that the radio–peak luminosity correlations are L 5 GHz / L Edd ∝ (L 2500 A ˚ / L Edd) 1.55 and L 5 GHz / L Edd ∝ (L 1 keV / L Edd) 1.53 for AGN and XRB, respectively, in the radiatively efficient sample, and L 5 GHz / L Edd ∝ (L 2500 A ˚ / L Edd) 0.48 and L 5 GHz / L Edd ∝ (L 1 keV / L Edd) 0.53 in the radiatively inefficient sample, respectively. Based on the similarities in radio–peak correlations, we further propose a fundamental plane in radio luminosity, the peak luminosity of blackbody radiation, and black hole mass, which is radiatively efficient: log L 5 GHz = 1. 57 − 0.01 + 0.01 log L peak − 0. 32 − 0.16 + 0.16 log M BH − 27. 73 − 0.34 + 0.34 with a scatter of σ R = 0.48 dex, and radiatively inefficient: log L 5 GHz = 0. 45 − 0.01 + 0.01 log L peak + 0. 91 − 0.10 + 0.12 log M BH + 12. 58 − 0.38 + 0.38 with a scatter of σ R = 0.63 dex. Our results are similar to those of previous studies on the fundamental plane for radiatively efficient and radiatively inefficient black hole activity. However, our results exhibit a smaller scatter, so when using the same part of blackbody radiation (i.e., the peak luminosity of the blackbody radiation), the fundamental plane becomes a little bit tighter. Mature radio galaxies such as M87 belong to a specific subclass of active galaxies (AGN) whose evolution in time endows them with five distinguishing characteristics, including (1) low excitation emission, (2) low star formation rates, (3) high bulge stellar-velocity dispersion, (4) bright stellar nuclei, and (5) weak or nonexistent merger signatures. We show how to understand these seemingly disparate characteristics as originating from the time evolution of powerful radio quasars and describe a new model prediction that tilted accretion disks in AGN are expected to occur in bright quasars but not in other subclasses of AGN. Binary black holes (BBHs) embedded within the accretion disks that fuel active galactic nuclei (AGN) are promising progenitors for the source of gravitational wave (GW) events detected by LIGO/VIRGO. Several recent studies have shown that when these binaries form, they are likely to be highly eccentric and retrograde. However, many uncertainties remain concerning the orbital evolution of these binaries as they either inspiral toward merger or disassociate. Previous hydrodynamical simulations exploring their orbital evolution have been predominantly two-dimensional or have been restricted to binaries on nearly circular orbits. We present the first high-resolution, three-dimensional local shearing-box simulations of both prograde and retrograde eccentric BBHs embedded in AGN disks. We find that retrograde binaries shrink several times faster than their prograde counterparts and exhibit significant orbital eccentricity growth, the rate of which monotonically increases with binary eccentricity. Our results suggest that retrograde binaries may experience runaway orbital eccentricity growth, which may bring them close enough together at pericenter for GW emission to drive them to coalescence. Although their eccentricity is damped, prograde binaries shrink much faster than their orbital eccentricity decays, suggesting they should remain modestly eccentric as they contract toward merger. Finally, binary precession driven by the AGN disk may dominate over precession induced by the supermassive black hole depending on the binary accretion rate and its location in the AGN disk, which can subdue the evection resonance and von Ziepel–Lidov–Kozai cycles. X-ray polarization, which now can be measured by the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE), is a new probe of jets in the supermassive black hole systems of active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Here, we summarize IXPE observations of radio-loud AGNs that have been published thus far. Blazars with synchrotron spectral energy distributions (SEDs) that peak at X-ray energies are routinely detected. The degree of X-ray polarization is considerably higher than at longer wavelengths. This is readily explained by energy stratification of the emission regions when electrons lose energy via radiation as they propagate away from the sites of particle acceleration as predicted in shock models. However, the 2–8 keV polarization electric vector is not always aligned with the jet direction as one would expect unless the shock is oblique. Magnetic reconnection may provide an alternative explanation. The rotation of the polarization vector in Mrk421 suggests the presence of a helical magnetic field in the jet. In blazars with lower-frequency peaks and the radio galaxy Centaurus A, the non-detection of X-ray polarization by IXPE constrains the X-ray emission mechanism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Active galactic nuclei (AGNs), either radio-quiet or radio-loud, had never been observed in X-ray polarized light until the advent of the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) in the end of 2021. This satellite opened a new observational window for studying supermassive black holes and their complex environment. In this regard, radio-quiet AGNs are probably better targets than radio-loud objects to probe accretion processes due to the lack of synchrotron emission from jets that can dilute the polarized signal from the central engine. Their relatively clean environment not only allows to detect and measure the X-ray polarization originating from the hot corona responsible for X-ray emission, but also to assess the geometry of the media immediately surrounding the supermassive black hole. Such geometrical measurements work just as well for characterizing the corona morphology in pole-on AGNs as it does for determining the three-dimensional shape of the circumnuclear cold obscurer (the so-called torus) in edge-on AGNs. In this review paper, we will return to each of the observations made by IXPE so far in the field of radio-quiet AGNs and highlight the fundamental contribution of X-ray polarimetry to our understanding of how light is emitted and how matter is shaped around supermassive black holes. Environmental effects are believed to play an important yet poorly understood role in triggering accretion events onto the supermassive black holes (SMBHs) of galaxies (active galactic nuclei; AGNs). Massive clusters, which represent the densest structures in the Universe, provide an excellent laboratory to isolate environmental effects and study their impact on black hole growth. In this work, we critically review observational evidence for the preferential activation of SMBHs in the outskirts of galaxy clusters. We develop a semi-empirical model under the assumption that the incidence of AGN in galaxies is independent of environment. We demonstrate that the model is broadly consistent with recent observations on the AGN halo occupation at z = 0.2, although it may overpredict satellite AGN in massive haloes at that low redshift. We then use this model to interpret the projected radial distribution of X-ray sources around high redshift (z ≈ 1) massive (⁠|$\gt 5 \times 10^{14} \, M_\odot$|⁠) clusters, which show excess counts outside their virial radius. Such an excess naturally arises in our model as a result of sample variance. Up to 20  per cent of the simulated projected radial distributions show excess counts similar to the observations, which are however, because of background/foreground AGN and hence, not physically associated with the cluster. Our analysis emphasizes the importance of projection effects and shows that current observations of z ≈ 1 clusters remain inconclusive on the activation of SMBHs during infall. Many galaxies contain SuperMassive Black Holes (SMBHs), whose formation and history raise many puzzles. Pulsar timing arrays have recently discovered a low-frequency cosmological “hum” of gravitational waves that may be emitted by SMBH binary systems, and the JWST and other telescopes have discovered an unexpectedly large population of high-redshift SMBHs. We argue that these two discoveries may be linked, and that they may enhance the prospects for measuring gravitational waves emitted during the mergers of massive black holes, thereby opening the way towards resolving many puzzles about SMBHs as well as providing new opportunities to probe general relativity. The merger of supermassive black holes produces millihertz gravitational waves (GWs), which are potentially detectable by the future Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA). Such binary systems are usually embedded in an accretion disk environment at the center of an active galactic nucleus (AGN). Recent studies suggest the plasma environment imposes measurable imprints on the GW signal if the mass ratio of the binary is around q ∼ 10−4 − 10−3. The effect of the gaseous environment on the GW signal is strongly dependent on the disk's parameters; therefore, it is believed that future low-frequency GW detections will provide us with precious information about the physics of AGN accretion disks. We investigated this effect by measuring the viscous torque via modeling of the evolution of magnetized tori around the primary massive black hole. Using the general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic HARM-COOL code, we performed 2D and 3D simulations of weakly magnetized, thin accretion disks, with a possible truncation and transition to advection-dominated accretion flow. We studied the angular momentum transport and turbulence generated by the magnetorotational instability. We quantified the disk's effective alpha viscosity and its evolution over time. We applied our numerical results to quantify the relativistic viscous torque on a hypothetical low-mass secondary black hole via a 1D analytical approach, and we estimated the GW phase shift due to the gas environment. We present the results of a joint XMM-Newton and NuSTAR campaign on the active galactic nucleus (AGN) IC 4329A, consisting of 9 × 20 ks XMM-Newton observations, and 5 × 20 ks NuSTAR observations within nine days, performed in August 2021. Within each observation, the AGN is not very variable, and the fractional variability never exceeds 5%. Flux variations are observed between the different observations on timescales of days, with a ratio of 30% of the minimum and maximum 2–10 keV flux. These variations follow the softer-when-brighter behavior typically observed in AGN. In all observations, a soft excess is clearly present. Consistently with previous observations, the X-ray spectra of the source exhibit a cutoff energy between 140 and 250 keV that is constant within the error in the different observations. We detected a prominent component of the 6.4 keV Fe Kα line consistent with being constant during the monitoring, consisting of an unresolved narrow core and a broader component likely originating in the inner accredion disk. We find that the reflection component is weak (Rmax = 0.009 ± 0.002) and most likely originates in distant neutral medium. We also found a warm absorber component together with an ultrafast outflow. Their energetics show that these outflows have enough mechanical power for significant feedback on the environment of the AGN. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

While the first "seeds" of supermassive black holes (BH) can range from |$\sim 10^2-10^6 \rm ~{\rm M}_{\odot }$|⁠ , the lowest mass seeds (⁠|$\lesssim 10^3~\rm {\rm M}_{\odot }$|⁠) are inaccessible to most cosmological simulations due to resolution limitations. We present our new BRAHMA simulations that use a novel flexible seeding approach to predict the |$z\ge 7$| BH populations for low-mass seeds. We ran two types of boxes that model |$\sim 10^3~\rm {\rm M}_{\odot }$| seeds using two distinct but mutually consistent seeding prescriptions at different simulation resolutions. First, we have the highest resolution |$[9~\mathrm{Mpc}]^3$| (BRAHMA-9-D3) boxes that directly resolve |$\sim 10^3~\rm {\rm M}_{\odot }$| seeds and place them within haloes with dense, metal-poor gas. Second, we have lower resolution, larger volume |$[18~\mathrm{Mpc}]^3$| (BRAHMA-18-E4), and |$\sim [36~\mathrm{Mpc}]^3$| (BRAHMA-36-E5) boxes that seed their smallest resolvable |$\sim 10^4~\&~10^5~\mathrm{{\rm M}_{\odot }}$| BH descendants using new stochastic seeding prescriptions calibrated using BRAHMA-9-D3. The three boxes together probe key BH observables between |$\sim 10^3\,\mathrm{ and}\,10^7~\rm {\rm M}_{\odot }$|⁠. The active galactic nuclei (AGN) luminosity function variations are small (factors of |$\sim 2-3$|⁠) at the anticipated detection limits of potential future X-ray facilities (⁠|$\sim 10^{43}~ \mathrm{ergs~s^{-1}}$| at |$z\sim 7$|⁠). Our simulations predict BHs |$\sim 10-100$| times heavier than the local |$M_*$| versus |$M_{\mathrm{ bh}}$| relations, consistent with several JWST -detected AGN. For different seed models, our simulations merge binaries at |$\sim 1-15~\mathrm{kpc}$|⁠ , with rates of |$\sim 200-2000$| yr−1 for |$\gtrsim 10^3~\rm {\rm M}_{\odot }$| BHs, |$\sim 6-60$| yr−1 for |$\gtrsim 10^4~\rm {\rm M}_{\odot }$| BHs, and up to |$\sim 10$| yr−1 amongst |$\gtrsim 10^5~\rm {\rm M}_{\odot }$| BHs. Although flux variability is one of the defining properties of accretion flows on to supermassive black holes, its dependence on physical parameters such as the mass of the compact object and the Eddington ratio remains under discussion. In this paper, we address this issue using the structure function statistic to measure the variability at X-ray wavelengths of a sample of optically selected QSOs with available black hole masses and Eddington ratios. We present a new Bayesian methodology for estimating the structure function tailored to the Poisson nature of the X-ray data. This is applied to 15 548 SDSS DRQ16 QSOs with repeat observations in the XMM – Newton archive and/or the SRG/eROSITA All Sky Survey. The X-ray structure function monotonically increases to time intervals of about 10–15 yrs, consistent with scenarios in which instabilities of the accretion disc contribute to the X-ray variability on long time-scales. Additionally, there is evidence that the amplitude of the stochastic X-ray flux variations rises with decreasing black hole mass and Eddington ratio. This finding imposes stringent constraints on empirical models of Active Galactic Nuclei variability derived from local samples, emphasizing the significance of high-redshift population studies for comprehending the stochastic flux variations in active black holes. The variability of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) has long been servicing as an essential avenue of exploring the accretion physics of a black hole (BH). There are two commonly used methods for analyzing AGN variability. First, the AGN variability, characterized by the structure function (SF) of a single band, can be well described by a damped random walk (DRW) process on timescales longer than ∼weeks, shorter than which departures have been reported. Second, the color variation (CV) between two bands behaves timescale dependent, raising challenges to the widely accepted reprocessing scenario. However, both the departure from the DRW process and the timescale-dependent CV are hitherto limited to AGNs, mainly quasars, at the supermassive scale. Here, utilizing the high-cadence multiwavelength monitoring on NGC 4395 harboring an intermediate-mass BH, we unveil at the intermediate-mass scale for the first time, prominent departures from the DRW process at timescales shorter than ∼hours in all three nights and bands, and plausible timescale-dependent CVs in the two longest nights of observation. Furthermore, comparing SFs of NGC 4395 to four AGNs at the supermassive scale, we suggest a new scaling relation between the timescale (τ ; across nearly 3 orders of magnitude) and the BH mass (M BH): τ ∝ M BH γ where the exponent γ is likely ≃0.6–0.8. This exponent differs from most previous measurements, but confirms a few, and is consistent with a recent theoretical prediction, suggesting a similar accretion process in AGNs across different mass scales. Gravitational waves from neutron star mergers have long been considered a promising way to measure the Hubble constant, H 0, which describes the local expansion rate of the Universe. While black hole mergers are more abundantly observed, their expected lack of electromagnetic emission and poor gravitational-wave localization make them less well suited for measuring H 0. Black hole mergers within the discs of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) could be an exception. Accretion from the AGN disc may produce an electromagnetic signal, pointing observers to the host galaxy. Alternatively, the low number density of AGNs could help identify the host galaxy of |$1{\!-\!}5~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| of mergers. Here we show that black hole mergers in AGN discs may be a sensitive way to determine H 0 with gravitational waves. If 1 per cent (10 per cent) of LIGO's observations occur in AGN discs with identified host galaxies, we could measure H 0 with 12 per cent (4 per cent) uncertainty in five years, possibly comparable to the sensitivity of neutron star mergers and set to considerably improve current gravitational wave measurements. Merging black holes (BHs) are expected to produce remnants with large dimensionless spin parameters (a spin ∼ 0.7). However, gravitational wave (GW) observations with LIGO–Virgo–Kagra (LVK) suggest that merging BHs are consistent with modestly positive but not high spin (a spin ∼ 0.2), causing tension with models suggesting that high-mass mergers are produced by hierarchical merger channels. Some BHs also show evidence for strong in-plane spin components. Here, we point out that spin-down of BHs due to eccentric prograde post-merger orbits within the gas of an active galactic nucleus (AGN) disc can yield BHs with masses in the upper mass gap, but only modestly positive a spin, and thus observations of BHs with low spin do not rule out hierarchical models. We also point out that the fraction of binary black hole (BBH) mergers with significant in-plane spin components is a strong test of interactions between disc BBHs and nuclear spheroid orbiters. Spin magnitude and spin tilt constraints from LVK observations of BBHs are an excellent test of dynamics of BHs in AGN discs, disc properties, and the nuclear clusters interacting with AGNs. Henize 2–10 is a dwarf galaxy experiencing positive black hole (BH) feedback from a radio-detected low-luminosity active galactic nucleus. Previous Green Bank Telescope (GBT) observations detected a H2O "kilomaser" in Henize 2–10, but the low angular resolution (33″) left the location and origin of the maser ambiguous. We present new Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array observations of the H2O maser line at 22.23508 GHz in Henize 2–10 with ∼2″ resolution. These observations reveal two maser sources distinct in position and velocity. The first maser source is spatially coincident with the known BH outflow and the region of triggered star formation ∼70 pc to the east. Combined with the broad width of the maser (W 50 ∼ 66 km s−1), this confirms our hypothesis that part of the maser detected with the GBT is produced by the impact of the BH outflow shocking the dense molecular gas along the flow and at the interface of the eastern star-forming region. The second maser source lies to the southeast, far from the central BH, and has a narrow width (W 50 ∼ 8 km s−1), suggesting a star formation–related origin. This work has revealed the nature of the H2O kilomaser in Henize 2–10 and illustrates the first known connection between outflow-driven H2O masers and positive BH feedback. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present the study on the relationship between supermassive black holes (SMBHs) and their host galaxies using our variability-selected active galactic nuclei (AGNs) sample (i AB ≤ 25.9 and z ≤ 4.5) constructed from the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program Ultradeep survey in the COSMOS field. We estimated the black hole (BH) mass (M BH = 105.5−10 M ⊙) based on the single-epoch virial method and the total stellar mass (M star = 1010−12 M ⊙) by separating the AGN component with spectral energy distribution fitting. We found that the redshift evolution of the BH–stellar mass ratio (M BH/ M star) depends on the M BH, which is caused by no significant correlation between M BH and M star. Variable AGNs with massive SMBHs (M BH > 109 M ⊙) at 1.5 < z < 3 show considerably higher BH–stellar mass ratios (> ∼1%) than the BH–bulge ratios (M BH/ M bulge) observed in the local Universe for the same BH range. This implies that there is a typical growth path of massive SMBHs, which is faster than the formation of the bulge component as final products seen in the present day. For the low-mass SMBHs (M BH < 108 M ⊙) at 0.5 < z < 3, on the other hand, variable AGNs show similar BH–stellar mass ratios with the local objects (∼0.1%), but smaller than those observed at z > 4. We interpret that host galaxies harboring less massive SMBHs at intermediate redshift have already acquired sufficient stellar mass, although high- z galaxies are still in the early stage of galaxy formation relative to those at the intermediate/local Universe. We investigate the torus size–luminosity relation of Type 1 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) based on the reverberation-mapping analysis using the light curves of the optical continuum and the IR continuum obtained with the W1 and W2 bands of the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer survey. The final sample consists of 446 and 416 AGNs, respectively, for W1- and W2-band light curves, covering a large dynamic range of bolometric luminosity from 1043.4 to 1047.6 erg s−1, which show reliable lag measurements based on our quality assessment analysis. After correcting for the accretion disk contamination in the observed IR flux, we constrain the torus size (R dust) and AGN bolometric luminosity (L bol) relationship with the best-fit slope of 0.39 (0.33) for the W1 (W2) band, which is shallower than expected from the dust radiation equilibrium model. By combining the previous K -band lag measurements, we find that the measured torus size depends on the observed wavelength of the dust radiation, as R dust, K : R dust,W1: R dust,W2 = 1.0:1.5:1.8 (R dust ∝ λ 0.80) at L bol = 1046 erg s−1, confirming a stratified structure of the torus, where wavelength-dependent emissions originate from distinct regions of the torus. By investigating the deviation from the best-fit torus size–luminosity relation, we find a moderate correlation between the offset from the R dust– L bol relation and Eddington ratio. We present the results of an investigation of a highly variable C iv broad absorption line (BAL) feature in spectra of the quasar SBS 1408+544 (z = 2.337) that shows a significant shift in velocity over time. This source was observed as a part of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Reverberation Mapping project and the SDSS-V Black Hole Mapper Reverberation Mapping project, and has been included in two previous studies, both of which identified significant variability in a high-velocity C iv BAL on timescales of just a few days in the quasar rest frame. Using ∼130 spectra acquired over 8 yr of spectroscopic monitoring with SDSS, we have determined that this BAL is not only varying in strength, but is also systematically shifting to higher velocities. Using cross-correlation methods, we measure the velocity shifts (and corresponding acceleration) of the BAL over a wide range of timescales, measuring an overall velocity shift of Δ v = − 683 − 84 + 89 km s−1 over the 8 yr monitoring period. This corresponds to an average rest-frame acceleration of a = 1.04 − 0.13 + 0.14 cm s−2, though the magnitude of the acceleration on shorter timescales is not constant throughout. A surprising finding of recent studies is the large number of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) associated with moderately massive black holes (⁠|$\rm \log (M_\bullet /M_\odot)\sim 6-8$|⁠), in the first billion years after the big bang (z > 5). In this context, a relevant finding has been the large fraction of candidate dual AGN, both at large separations (several kpc) and in close pairs (less than a kpc), likely in the process of merging. Frequent black hole merging may be a route for black hole growth in the early universe; however, previous findings are still tentative and indirect. We present JWST /NIRSpec-IFU observations of a galaxy at z  = 7.15 in which we find evidence for a |$\rm \log (M_\bullet /M_\odot)\sim 7.7$| accreting black hole, as traced by a broad component of H β emission, associated with the Broad Line Region (BLR) around the black hole. This BLR is offset by 620 pc in projection from the centroid of strong rest-frame optical emission, with a velocity offset of ∼40 km s–1. The latter region is also characterized by (narrow) nebular emission features typical of AGN, hence also likely hosting another accreting black hole, although obscured (Type 2, narrow-line AGN). We exclude that the offset BLR is associated with Supernovae or massive stars, and we interpret these results as two black holes in the process of merging. This finding may be relevant for estimates of the rate and properties of gravitational-wave signals from the early universe that will be detected by future observatories like LISA. Recent studies on dwarf galaxies reveal that some of them harbour a massive black hole (BH), which is believed to have a similar mass of the supermassive BH 'seeds' at early times. The origin and growth of the primitive BHs are still open questions, since these BH seeds are hardly observed at high redshifts. Therefore, MBH of dwarf galaxies can be the perfect candidates to untangle BH 'seeds' properties and their influence on their host galaxy evolution, since MBH may preserve their initial conditions due to its quiet merger and accretion histories. We use optical integral field unit observations, obtained with the Gemini GMOS-IFU, to study the gas emission and kinematics in four dwarf galaxies, candidates to host MBH, based on the analysis of their [Fe  x ] luminosities measured from SDSS spectra. The [Fe  x ] emission line is not detected in our GMOS in any of the galaxies, prompting speculation that its absence in our recent data may stem from a past tidal disruption event coinciding with the observation period of the SDSS data. All galaxies exhibit extended gas emissions, and the spatially resolved emission-line ratio diagnostic diagrams present values that suggest active galactic nuclei (AGN) photoionization from the [S  ii ]–BPT diagram. The gas velocity fields of all galaxies are indicative of disturbed rotation patterns, with no detection of gas outflows in any of the sources. Although the [S  ii ]–BPT diagrams indicate AGN photoionization, further confirmation through multiwavelength observations is required to validate this scenario. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present a model of radio continuum emission associated with star formation (SF) and active galactic nuclei (AGNs) implemented in the Shark semi-analytic model of galaxy formation. SF emission includes free-free and synchrotron emission, which depend on the free-electron density and the rate of core-collapse supernovae with a minor contribution from supernova remnants, respectively. AGN emission is modelled based on the jet production rate, which depends on the black hole mass, accretion rate, and spin, and includes synchrotron self-absorption. Shark reproduces radio luminosity functions (RLFs) at |$1.4\, \rm GHz$| and |$150\, \rm MHz$| for 0 ≤ z ≤ 4, and scaling relations between radio luminosity, star formation rate, and infrared luminosity of galaxies in the local and distant universe in good agreement with observations. The model also reproduces observed number counts of radio sources from 150 MHz to 8.4 GHz to within a factor of 2 on average, though larger discrepancies are seen at the very bright fluxes at higher frequencies. We use this model to understand how the radio continuum emission from radio-quiet AGNs can affect the measured RLFs of galaxies. We find current methods to exclude AGNs from observational samples result in large fractions of radio-quiet AGNs contaminating the 'star-forming galaxies' selection and a brighter end to the resulting RLFs.We investigate how this affects the infrared-radio correlation (IRRC) and show that AGN contamination can lead to evolution of the IRRC with redshift. Without this contamination, our model predicts a redshift- and stellar mass-independent IRRC, except at the dwarf-galaxy regime. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Radiative cooling and active galactic nucleus heating are thought to form a feedback loop that regulates the evolution of low-redshift cool-core galaxy clusters. Numerical simulations suggest that the formation of multiphase gas in the cluster core imposes a floor on the ratio of cooling time (t cool) to free-fall time (t ff) at min(t cool/ t ff) ≈ 10. Observations of galaxy clusters show evidence for such a floor, and usually the cluster cores with min(t cool/ t ff) ≲ 30 contain abundant multiphase gas. However, there are important outliers. One of them is Abell 2029 (A2029), a massive galaxy cluster (M 200 ≳ 1015 M⊙) with min(t cool/ t ff) ∼ 20, but little apparent multiphase gas. In this paper, we present high-resolution 3D hydrodynamic adaptive mesh refinement simulations of a cluster similar to A2029 and study how it evolves over a period of 1–2 Gyr. Those simulations suggest that A2029 self-regulates without producing multiphase gas because the mass of its central black hole (⁠|${\sim} 5 \times 10^{10} \, \mathrm{ M}_\odot$|⁠) is great enough for Bondi accretion of hot ambient gas to produce enough feedback energy to compensate for radiative cooling. We present a pan-chromatic study of AT2017bcc, a nuclear transient that was discovered in 2017 within the skymap of a reported burst-like gravitational-wave candidate, G274296. It was initially classified as a superluminous supernova, and then reclassified as a candidate tidal disruption event. Its optical light curve has since shown ongoing variability with a structure function consistent with that of an active galactic nucleus, however, earlier data show no variability for at least 10 yr prior to the outburst in 2017. The spectrum shows complex profiles in the broad Balmer lines: a central component with a broad-blue wing, and a boxy component with time-variable blue and red shoulders. The H α emission profile is well modelled using a circular accretion disc component, and a blue-shifted double Gaussian which may indicate a partially obscured outflow. Weak narrow lines, together with the previously flat light curve, suggest that this object represents a dormant galactic nucleus which has recently been re-activated. Our time-series modelling of the Balmer lines suggests that this is connected to a disturbance in the disc morphology, and we speculate this could involve a sudden violent event such as a tidal disruption event involving the central supermassive black hole, though this cannot be confirmed, and given an estimated black hole mass of ≳ 107–108 M⊙ instabilities in an existing disc may be more likely. Although we find that the redshifts of AT2017bcc (z  = 0.13) and G274296 (z > 0.42) are inconsistent, this event adds to the growing diversity of both nuclear transients and multimessenger contaminants. Identifying methods to discover dual active galactic nucleus (AGN) has proven to be challenging. Several indirect tracers have been explored in the literature, including X/S-shaped radio morphologies and double-peaked (DP) emission lines in the optical spectra. However, the detection rates of confirmed dual AGN candidates from the individual methods remain extremely small. We search for binary black holes (BBH) in a sample of six sources that exhibit both X-shaped radio morphology and DP emission lines using the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA). Three out of the six sources show dual VLBA compact components, making them strong candidates for BBH sources. In addition, we present deep uGMRT images revealing the exquisite details of the X-shaped wings in three sources. We present a detailed precession modeling analysis of these sources. The black hole separations estimated from the simplistic geodetic precession model are incompatible with those estimated from emission line offsets and the VLBA separations. However, precession induced by a non-coplanar secondary black hole is a feasible mechanism for explaining the observed X-shaped radio morphologies and the black hole separations estimated from other methods. The black hole separations estimated from the double-peaked emission lines agree well with the VLBA compact component separations. Future multifrequency VLBA observations will be critical in ruling out or confirming the BBH scenario in the three galaxies with dual component detections. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report the All-Sky Automated Survey for SuperNovae discovery of the tidal disruption event (TDE) ASASSN-23bd (AT 2023clx) in NGC 3799, a LINER galaxy with no evidence of strong active galactic nucleus (AGN) activity over the past decade. With a redshift of z  = 0.01107 and a peak ultraviolet (UV)/optical luminosity of (5.4 ± 0.4) × 1042 erg s−1, ASASSN-23bd is the lowest-redshift and least-luminous TDE discovered to date. Spectroscopically, ASASSN-23bd shows H α and He  i emission throughout its spectral time series, there are no coronal lines in its near-infrared spectrum, and the UV spectrum shows nitrogen lines without the strong carbon and magnesium lines typically seen for AGN. Fits to the rising ASAS-SN light curve show that ASASSN-23bd started to brighten on MJD 59988 |$^{+1}_{-1}$|⁠ , ∼9 d before discovery, with a nearly linear rise in flux, peaking in the g band on MJD |$60 \, 000^{+3}_{-3}$|⁠. Scaling relations and TDE light curve modelling find a black hole mass of ∼106 M⊙, which is on the lower end of supermassive black hole masses. ASASSN-23bd is a dim X-ray source, with an upper limit of |$L_{0.3-10\, \mathrm{keV}} \lt 1.0\times 10^{40}$| erg s−1 from stacking all Swift observations prior to MJD 60061, but with soft (∼0.1 keV) thermal emission with a luminosity of |$L_{0.3-2 \, \mathrm{keV}}\sim 4\times 10^{39}$| erg s−1 in XMM-Newton observations on MJD 60095. The rapid (t < 15 d) light curve rise, low UV/optical luminosity, and a luminosity decline over 40 d of Δ L 40 ≈ −0.7 dex make ASASSN-23bd one of the dimmest TDEs to date and a member of the growing 'Low Luminosity and Fast' class of TDEs. Models of accretion discs surrounding active galactic nuclei (AGNs) find vast applications in high-energy astrophysics. The broad strategy is to parametrize some of the key disc properties such as gas density and temperature as a function of the radial coordinate from a given set of assumptions on the underlying physics. Two of the most popular approaches in this context were presented by Sirko & Goodman and Thompson et al. We present a critical reanalysis of these widely used models, detailing their assumptions and clarifying some steps in their derivation that were previously left unsaid. Our findings are implemented in the pAGN module for the Python programming language, which is the first public implementation of these accretion-disc models. We further apply pAGN to the evolution of stellar-mass black holes embedded in AGN discs, addressing the potential occurrence of migration traps. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The co-evolution between supermassive black holes and their environment is most directly traced by the hot atmospheres of dark matter halos. The cooling of the hot atmosphere supplies the central regions with fresh gas, igniting active galactic nuclei (AGN) with long duty cycles. The outflows from the central engine tightly couple with the surrounding gaseous medium and provide the dominant heating source, preventing runaway cooling. Every major modern hydrodynamical simulation suite now includes a prescription for AGN feedback to reproduce the realistic populations of galaxies. However, the mechanisms governing the feeding/feedback cycle between the central black holes and their surrounding galaxies and halos are still poorly understood. Galaxy groups are uniquely suited to constrain the mechanisms governing the cooling–heating balance, as the energy supplied by the central AGN can exceed the gravitational binding energy of halo gas particles. Here, we provide a brief overview of our knowledge of the impact of AGN on the hot atmospheres of galaxy groups, with a specific focus on the thermodynamic profiles of the groups. We then present our on-going efforts to improve on the implementation of AGN feedback in galaxy evolution models by providing precise measurements of the properties of galaxy groups. Circumbinary accretion occurs throughout the universe, from the formation of stars and planets to the aftermath of major galactic mergers. We present an extensive investigation of circumbinary accretion disks, studying circular binaries with mass ratios (q ≡ M 2/ M 1) from 0.01 to 1 and at each mass ratio probing the effects of disk thickness and viscosity. We study disks with aspect ratios H / r ∈ {0.1, 0.05, 0.03} and vary both the magnitude and spatial dependence of viscosity. Although thin accretion disks have previously been found to promote rapid inspirals of equal-mass binaries, we find that gravitational torques become weaker at lower mass ratios and most binaries with 0.01 ≤ q ≤ 0.04 outspiral, which may delay the coalescence of black hole binaries formed from minor mergers and cause high-mass exoplanets to migrate outward. However, in a number of cases, the disks accreting onto binaries with mass ratios ∼0.07 fail to develop eccentric modes, leading to extremely rapid inspirals. Variability in black hole accretion correlates with disk eccentricity, and we observe variability above the ∼10% level even for mass ratios of 0.01. We demonstrate that the spatial dependence of the viscosity (e.g., α vs. constant ν) significantly affects the degree of preferential accretion onto the secondary, resolving discrepancies between previous studies. Colder circumbinary disks remain eccentric even at q ∼ 0.01 and sustain deep, asymmetric cavities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The soft excess in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) may arise through a combination of relativistic reflection and the effects of a warm corona at the surface of the accretion disc. Detailed examination of the soft excess can therefore constrain models of the transport and dissipation of accretion energy. Here, we analyse 34 XMM–Newton observations from 14 type 1 AGNs with the reXcor spectral model that self-consistently combines emission from a warm corona with relativistic reflection assuming a lamppost corona. The model divides accretion energy between the disc, the warm corona, and the lamppost. The XMM–Newton observations span a factor of 188 in Eddington ratio (λobs) and 350 in black hole mass, and we find that a warm corona is a significant contributor to the soft excess for 13 of the 14 AGNs with a mean warm corona heating fraction of 0.51. The reXcor fits reveal that the fraction of accretion energy dissipated in the lamppost is anticorrelated with λobs. In contrast, the relationship between λobs and both the optical depth and the heating fraction of the warm corona appears to transition from an anticorrelation to a correlation at λobs,t ≈ 0.15. Therefore, at least one other physical process in addition to the accretion rate is needed to explain the evolution of the warm corona. Overall, we find that a warm corona appears to be a crucial depository of accretion energy in AGNs across a broad range of λobs and black hole mass. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Accretion discs in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) foster black hole (BH) formation, growth, and mergers. Stellar mass BHs migrate inwards under the influence of hydrodynamical torques unless they encounter a region where the torque flips sign. At these migration traps, BHs accumulate and merge via dynamical or gas-assisted interactions, producing high-frequency LIGO/Virgo/KAGRA (LVK) gravitational wave (GW) sources and potentially cutting off the supply of extreme mass ratio inspirals that would otherwise make low-frequency, LISA -band GWs. In this paper, we study the interplay between different types of migration torques, focusing especially on the 'thermal torques' generated by the thermal response of the AGN to embedded stellar-mass BHs that accrete through their own mini-discs. In contrast to previous work, we find that Type I torques cannot produce migration traps on their own, but thermal torques often do, particularly in low-mass AGN. The migration traps produced by thermal torques exist at much larger distances (∼103−5 gravitational radii) than do previously identified Type I traps, carrying implications for GW populations at multiple frequencies. Finally, we identify a bifurcation of AGN discs into two regimes: migration traps exist below a critical AGN luminosity, and do not at higher luminosities. This critical luminosity is fit as |$\log _{10} L_{\rm AGN}^c = 45 {\!-\!} 0.32 \log _{10}{(\alpha /0.01)}$| where α is the Shakura–Sunyaev viscosity parameter, a range compatible with recent claims that LVK GWs are not preferentially associated with high-luminosity AGN. The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has recently uncovered the presence of low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (AGNs) at z = 4–11. Spectroscopic observations have provided estimates of the nuclear black hole (BH) masses for these sources, extending the low-mass boundary down to M • ∼ 106–7 M ⊙. Despite this breakthrough, the observed lowest mass of BHs is still ≳1–2 orders of magnitude heavier than the predicted mass range of their seed population, thereby leaving the initial mass distribution of massive BHs poorly constrained. In this paper, we focus on UV-to-optical (in the rest frame) flares of stellar tidal disruption events (TDEs) embedded in low-luminosity AGNs as a tool for exploring low-mass BH populations with ≲104–6 M ⊙. We provide an estimate of the TDE rate over z = 4–11, associated with the properties of JWST-detected AGN host galaxies, and we find that deep and wide survey programs with JWST and the Roman Space Telescope (RST) can detect and identify TDEs up to z ≃ 4–7. The predicted detection numbers of TDEs at z > 4 in 1 yr are N TDE ∼ 2 – 10 (0.2 – 2) for the JADES-Medium (and COSMOS-Web) survey with JWST and N TDE ∼ 2 – 10 (8 – 50) for the deep (and wide) tiers of the High Latitude Time Domain Survey with RST. We further discuss survey strategies for hunting for transient high-redshift TDEs in wide-field surveys with RST, as well as a joint observation campaign with the Vera C. Rubin Observatory for enhancing the detection number. The high-redshift TDE search will give us a unique opportunity to probe the mass distribution of early BH populations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Accretion of black holes at near-Eddington or super-Eddington rates represents the most powerful episode driving black hole growth, potentially occurring across various types of objects. However, the physics governing accretion and jet–disk coupling in such states remains unclear, primarily due to the difficulty in detecting associated jets, which may emit extremely weakly or exhibit episodic behavior. Only a few near/super-Eddington systems have demonstrated radio activity, and it remains uncertain whether jets exist and what their properties are in super-Eddington active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and ultraluminous X-ray sources. This uncertainty stems mainly from the complex radio emission mix, which includes contributions from jets, star formation activity, photoionized gas, accretion disk wind, and coronal activity. In this work, we conducted high-resolution, very long baseline interferometry observations to investigate jets in the highly accreting narrow-line Seyfert I system I Zw 1. Our observations successfully revealed small-scale jets (with a linear size of ∼45 pc) at both 1.5 and 5 GHz, based on the high radio brightness temperature, radio morphology, and spectral index distribution. Additionally, the parsec-scale jet observed in I Zw 1 displays a knotted morphology reminiscent of other sources accreting at similar rates. In summary, the high accretion rates and jet properties observed in the AGN I Zw 1 may support the AGN/X-ray binary analogy in this extreme state. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hierarchical black hole (BH) mergers in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are unique among formation channels of binary black holes (BBHs) because they are likely associated with electromagnetic counterparts and can efficiently lead to the mass growth of BHs. Here, we explore the impact of gas accretion and migration traps on the evolution of BBHs in AGNs. We have developed a new fast semi-analytic model, that allows us to explore the parameter space while capturing the main physical processes involved. We find that an effective exchange of energy and angular momentum between the BBH and the surrounding gas (i.e., gas hardening) during inspiral greatly enhances the efficiency of hierarchical mergers, leading to the formation of intermediate-mass BHs (up to 104 M⊙) and triggering spin alignment. Moreover, our models with efficient gas hardening show both an anticorrelation between the BBH mass ratio and the effective spin and a correlation between the primary BH mass and the effective spin. In contrast, if gas hardening is inefficient, the hierarchical merger chain is already truncated after the first two or three generations. The statistical distribution and evolution of key properties of active galactic nuclei (AGN), such as their accretion rate, mass, and spin, remains a subject of open debate in astrophysics. The ESA Euclid space mission, launched on July 1 2023, promises a breakthrough in this field. We create detailed mock catalogues of AGN spectra from the rest-frame near-infrared down to the ultraviolet – including emission lines – to simulate what Euclid will observe for both obscured (type 2) and unobscured (type 1) AGN. We concentrate on the red grisms of the NISP instrument, which will be used for the wide-field survey, opening a new window for spectroscopic AGN studies in the near-infrared. We quantify the efficiency in the redshift determination as well as in retrieving the emission line flux of the Hα+[N II] complex, as Euclid is mainly focused on this emission line, given that it is expected to be the brightest one in the probed redshift range. Spectroscopic redshifts are measured for 83% of the simulated AGN in the interval where the Hα is visible (i.e. 0.89 <  z <  1.83 at a line flux of > 2 × 10−16 erg s−1 cm−2, encompassing the peak of AGN activity at z ≃ 1 − 1.5) within the spectral coverage of the red grism. Outside this redshift range, the measurement efficiency decreases significantly. Overall, a spectroscopic redshift iscorrectly determined for about 90% of type 2 AGN down to an emission line flux of roughly 3 × 10−16 erg s−1 cm−2, and for type 1 AGN down to 8.5 × 10−16 erg s−1 cm−2. Recovered values for black hole mass show a small offset with respect to the input values by about 10%, but the agreement is good overall. With such a high spectroscopic coverage at z <  2, we will be able to measure AGN demography, scaling relations, and clustering from the epoch of the peak of AGN activity down to the present-day Universe for hundreds of thousands of AGN with homogeneous spectroscopic information. Spectro-polarimetric signatures of accretion disks in X-ray binaries and active galactic nuclei contain information on the masses and spins of their central black holes, as well as the geometry of matter in proximity to the compact objects. This information can be extracted by means of X-ray polarimetry. In this work, we present a fast analytical ray-tracing technique for polarized light (ARTPOL) that helps us to obtain the spinning black hole parameters from the observed properties. This technique can replace the otherwise time-consuming numerical ray-tracing calculations for any optically thick or geometrically thin accretion flow. For the purposes of illustration, we considered a standard optically thick, geometrically thin accretion disk in the equatorial plane of the Kerr black hole. We show that ARTPOL proves accurate for dimensionless spin parameter a ≤ 0.94 with a speed that is over four orders of magnitude faster than direct ray-tracing calculations. This approach opens up broader prospects for direct fittings of the spectro-polarimetric data from the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. Radio-excess active galactic nuclei (radio-AGNs) are essential to our understanding of both the physics of black hole (BH) accretion and the interaction between BHs and host galaxies. Recent deep and wide radio continuum surveys have made it possible to study radio-AGNs down to lower luminosities and up to higher redshifts than previous studies, and are providing new insights into the abundance and physical origin of radio-AGNs. Aims. Here we focus on the cosmic evolution, physical properties, and AGN-host galaxy connections of radio-AGNs selected from a total sample of ∼400 000 galaxies at 0 < z < 4 in the GOODS-N and COSMOS fields. Methods. Combining the deep radio continuum data with multi-band, de-blended far-infrared, and submillimeter data, we were able to identify 983 radio-AGNs out of the entire galaxy sample through radio excess relative to the far-infrared–radio relation. Results. We studied the cosmic evolution of 1.4 GHz radio luminosity functions (RLFs) for both star-forming galaxies (SFGs) and radio-AGNs, which can be well described by a pure luminosity evolution of L⋆ ∝ (1 + z)−0.34 × z + 3.57 and a pure density evolution of Φ⋆ ∝ (1 + z)−0.77 × z + 2.69, respectively. We derived the turnover luminosity, above which the number density of radio-AGNs surpasses that of SFGs. We show that this crossover luminosity increases with increasing redshifts, from 1022.9 W Hz−1 at z ∼ 0 to 1025.2 W Hz−1 at z ∼ 4. At the full redshift range of 0 < z < 4, we further derive the probability (pradio) of SFGs and quiescent galaxies (QGs) hosting a radio-AGN, as a function of stellar mass (M⋆), radio luminosity (LR), and redshift (z), which yields pradio ∝ (1+z)3.08 M⋆1.06 LR−0.77 p radio ∝ (1 + z) 3.08 M ⋆ 1.06 L R − 0.77 $ p_{\mathrm{radio}} \propto (1+z)^{3.08}\, M_{\star}^{1.06}\, L_{\mathrm{R}}^{-0.77} $ for SFGs, and pradio ∝ (1+z)2.47 M⋆1.41 LR−0.60 p radio ∝ (1 + z) 2.47 M ⋆ 1.41 L R − 0.60 $ p_{\mathrm{radio}} \propto (1+z)^{2.47}\ M_{\star}^{1.41}\, L_{\mathrm{R}}^{-0.60} $ for QGs, respectively. Conclusions. The quantitative relation for the probabilities of galaxies hosting a radio-AGN indicates that radio-AGNs in QGs prefer to reside in more massive galaxies with higher LR than those in SFGs. In this paper, we employ a general relativistic formalism and develop new theoretical tools that allow us to analytically express the mass and electric charge of the Reissner–Nordström black hole as well as its distance to a distant observer in terms of few directly observable quantities, such as the total frequency shift, aperture angle of the telescope, and redshift rapidity. Our analytic and concise formulas are valid on the midline, and the redshift rapidity is a relativistic invariant observable that represents the evolution of the frequency shift with respect to the proper time in the Reissner–Nordström spacetime. This procedure is applicable for particles undergoing circular motion around a spherically symmetric and electrically charged black hole, which is the case for accretion disks orbiting supermassive black holes hosted at the core of active galactic nuclei. Although this type of black hole is expected to be electrically neutral, our results provide a novel method to measure the electric charge of the Reissner–Nordström black hole, hence can shed some light on this claim. Besides, these results allow us to measure the mass of the black hole and its distance from the Earth, and we can employ the general formulas in black hole parameter estimation studies. We examine the fundamental plane of 91 blazars which include flat-spectrum radio quasars and BL Lacertae objects with known X-ray luminosity (LR), radio luminosity (LX), and black hole mass measurements (M) to reflect the relationship between jet and accretion for blazars. The fundamental plane of blazars are log LR  =  |${0.273}_{+0.059}^{-0.059}\log L_X$|  +  |${0.695}_{+0.191}^{-0.191}\log M$|  +  |${25.457}_{+2.728}^{-2.728}$| and log LR  =  |${0.190}_{+0.049}^{-0.049}\log L_X$|  +  |${0.475}_{+0.157}^{-0.157}\log M$|  +  |${28.568}_{+2.245}^{-2.245}$| after considering the effect of beam factor. Our results suggest that the jet of blazars has connection with accretion. We set the black hole spin energy as a new variable to correct the black hole mass and explore the effect of black hole spin on the fundamental relationship. We find that the fundamental plane of blazars is affected by the black hole spin, which is similar to the previous work for active galactic nuclei. We additionally examine a new fundamental plane which is based on the black hole spin-mass energy (M spin). The new fundamental plane (log LR  =  |${0.332}_{+0.081}^{-0.081}\log L_X$|  +  |${0.502}_{+0.091}^{-0.091}\log M_{spin}$|  +  |${22.606}_{+3.346}^{-3.346}$| with R-Square = 0.575) shows that M spin has a better correlation coefficient compared to the M for fundamental plane of blazars. These results suggest that the black hole spin should be considered as an important factor for the study of fundamental plane for blazars. We use the Cosmic Archaeology Tool (CAT) semi-analytical model to explore the contribution of Population (Pop) III/II stars and active galactic nuclei (AGNs) to the galaxy ultraviolet (UV) luminosity function (LF) evolution at 4 ≤ z ≤ 20. We compare in particular with recent JWST data in order to explore the apparent tension between observations and theoretical models in the number density of bright galaxies at z ≳ 10. The model predicts a star formation history dominated by UV faint (M UV > −18) galaxies, with a Pop III contribution of |$\lesssim 10~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| (⁠|$\lesssim 0.5~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$|⁠) at z ≃ 20 (z ≃ 10). Stars are the primary sources of cosmic reionization, with |$5~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}\!-\!10~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| of ionizing photons escaping into the intergalatic medium at 5 ≤ z ≤ 10, while the contribution of unobscured AGNs becomes dominant only at z ≲ 5. The predicted stellar and AGN UV LFs reproduce the observational data at 5 ≲ z ≲ 9–10. At higher redshift, CAT predicts a steeper evolution in the faint-end slope (M UV > –18), and a number density of bright galaxies (M UV ≃ −20) consistent with data at z ∼ 10–11, but smaller by 0.8 dex at z ∼ 12–13, and 1.2 dex at z ∼ 14–16, when compared to the values estimated by recent studies. Including the AGN emission does not affect the above findings, as AGNs contribute at most to |$\lesssim 10~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| of the total UV luminosity at M UV < –19 and z ≳ 10. Interestingly, considering a gradual transition in the stellar initial mass function, modulated by metallicity and redshift as suggested by recent simulations, the model agrees with JWST data at z ∼ 12–13, and the disagreement at z ∼ 14–16 is reduced to 0.5 dex. X-ray emission from active galactic nuclei (AGNs) often displays complex and rapid variability, which may provide a glimpse into the detailed thermal and dynamical structure of the accreting gas near the event horizon of the central black hole. The observed variability can be analysed using Fourier transforms of the light curves in multiple energy channels, which can be used to generate Fourier phase lags, corresponding to lags in the time domain. The X-ray time lags may be either soft lags or hard lags, depending on whether the variability in the hard energy channel precedes that in the soft channel or vice versa. The physical explanation for the observed X-ray time lags from AGNs has been puzzling, and several scenarios have been proposed. In this paper, we explore the hypothesis that the X-ray time lags are produced as a result of the reprocessing of iron L-line and K-line seed photons generated via fluorescence, which is driven by a variable incident radiation field. The seed photons are reprocessed by a combination of thermal and bulk Comptonization and spatial reverberation. We assume that the inner region of the accretion flow can be approximated as a hot, geometrically thick ADAF disc. The outer radius of the ADAF region is equal to the shock formation radius, which is located just outside the centrifugal barrier. The time-dependent radiative transfer in the disc is analysed using a Fourier-transformed, vertically averaged transport equation in cylindrical coordinates. We demonstrate that the new model can successfully reproduce the complex X-ray variability data for the Seyfert 1 galaxies 1H 0707–495 and Ark 564. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Quasars are bright and unobscured active galactic nuclei (AGN) thought to be powered by the accretion of matter around supermassive black holes at the centers of galaxies. The temporal variability of a quasar's brightness contains valuable information about its physical properties. The UV/optical variability is thought to be a stochastic process, often represented as a damped random walk described by a stochastic differential equation (SDE). Upcoming wide-field telescopes such as the Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) are expected to observe tens of millions of AGN in multiple filters over a ten year period, so there is a need for efficient and automated modeling techniques that can handle the large volume of data. Latent SDEs are machine learning models well suited for modeling quasar variability, as they can explicitly capture the underlying stochastic dynamics. In this work, we adapt latent SDEs to jointly reconstruct multivariate quasar light curves and infer their physical properties such as the black hole mass, inclination angle, and temperature slope. Our model is trained on realistic simulations of LSST ten year quasar light curves, and we demonstrate its ability to reconstruct quasar light curves even in the presence of long seasonal gaps and irregular sampling across different bands, outperforming a multioutput Gaussian process regression baseline. Our method has the potential to provide a deeper understanding of the physical properties of quasars and is applicable to a wide range of other multivariate time series with missing data and irregular sampling. The origin of cosmic high-energy neutrinos remains largely unexplained. For high-energy neutrino alerts from IceCube, a coincidence with time-variable emission has been seen for three different types of accreting black holes: (1) a gamma-ray flare from a blazar (TXS 0506+056), (2) an optical transient following a stellar tidal disruption event (TDE; AT2019dsg), and (3) an optical outburst from an active galactic nucleus (AGN; AT2019fdr). For the latter two sources, infrared follow-up observations revealed a powerful reverberation signal due to dust heated by the flare. This discovery motivates a systematic study of neutrino emission from all supermassive black hole with similar dust echoes. Because dust reprocessing is agnostic to the origin of the outburst, our work unifies TDEs and high-amplitude flares from AGN into a population that we dub accretion flares. Besides the two known events, we uncover a third flare that is coincident with a PeV-scale neutrino (AT2019aalc). Based solely on the optical and infrared properties, we estimate a significance of 3.6σ for this association of high-energy neutrinos with three accretion flares. Our results imply that at least ∼10 per cent of the IceCube high-energy neutrino alerts could be due to accretion flares. This is surprising because the sum of the fluence of these flares is at least three orders of magnitude lower compared to the total fluence of normal AGN. It thus appears that the efficiency of high-energy neutrino production in accretion flares is increased compared to non-flaring AGN. In this review, the third one in the series focused on a small two-band UV-photometry mission, we assess possibilities for a small UV two-band photometry mission in studying accreting supermassive black holes (SMBHs; mass range ∼ 10 6 – 10 10 M ⊙ ). We focus on the following observational concepts: (i) dedicated monitoring of selected type-I Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) in order to measure the time delay between the far-UV, the near-UV, and other wavebands (X-ray and optical), (ii) nuclear transients including (partial) tidal disruption events and repetitive nuclear transients, and (iii) the study of peculiar sources, such as changing-look AGN, hollows and gaps in accretion disks, low-luminosity AGN, and candidates for Intermediate-Mass Black Holes (IMBHs; mass range ∼ 10 2 – 10 5 M ⊙ ) in galactic nuclei. The importance of a small UV mission for the observing program (i) is to provide intense, high-cadence monitoring of selected sources, which will be beneficial for, e.g. reverberation-mapping of accretion disks and subsequently confronting accretion-disk models with observations. For program (ii), a relatively small UV space telescope is versatile enough to start monitoring a transient event within ≲ 20 minutes after receiving the trigger; such a moderately fast repointing capability will be highly beneficial. Peculiar sources within the program (iii) will be of interest to a wider community and will create an environment for competitive observing proposals. For tidal disruption events (TDEs), high-cadence UV monitoring is crucial for distinguishing among different scenarios for the origin of the UV emission. The small two-band UV space telescope will also provide information about the near- and far-UV continuum variability for rare transients, such as repetitive partial TDEs and jetted TDEs. We also discuss the possibilities to study and analyze sources with non-standard accretion flows, such as AGN with gappy disks, low-luminosity active galactic nuclei with intermittent accretion, and SMBH binaries potentially involving intermediate-mass black holes. This review examines the relationship between black hole activity and kinematic gas–star misalignment in brightest group galaxies (BGGs) with different merger rates. The formation history of galaxy groups is assessed through "age-dating" as an indicator of distinct major mergers involving the BGGs. BGGs within groups characterized by a higher frequency of major mergers are more likely to host active SMBHs. A consistent correlation is identified between the level of black hole activity, as indicated by the 1.4 GHz and 325 MHz radio emissions, and the degree of kinematic misalignment between the gas and stellar components in BGGs. In dynamically fossil groups, where black hole accretion rate is relatively (∼1 dex) lower due to the lack of recent (≤1 Gyr) major mergers, there is reduced (∼30%) misalignment between the gas and stellar components of BGGs compared to non-fossil groups. Additionally, this study reveals that BGGs in non-fossil groups show higher levels of star formation rate and increased occurrence of mergers, contributing to observed color differences. Exploring the properties and dynamics of the gas disk influenced by mechanical AGN feedback through hydrodynamic simulations suggests that AGN wind-induced effects further lead to the persistent gas misalignment in the disk around the supermassive black hole. Stellar-mass binary black holes (BBHs) embedded in active galactic nucleus (AGN) discs offer a distinct dynamical channel to produce black hole mergers detected in gravitational waves by LIGO/Virgo. To understand their orbital evolution through interactions with the disc gas, we perform a suite of two-dimensional high-resolution, local shearing box, viscous hydrodynamical simulations of equal-mass binaries. We find that viscosity not only smooths the flow structure around prograde circular binaries,but also greatly raises their accretion rates. The torque associated with accretion may be overwhelmingly positive and dominate over the gravitational torque at a high accretion rate. However, the accreted angular momentum per unit mass decreases with increasing viscosity, making it easier to shrink the binary orbit. In addition, retrograde binaries still experience rapid orbital decay, and prograde eccentric binaries still experience eccentricity damping. Our numerical experiments further show that prograde binaries are more likely to be hardened if the physical sizes of the accretors are sufficiently small such that the accretion rate is reduced. The dependence of the binary accretion rate on the accretor size can be weaken through boosted accretion either due to a high viscosity or a more isothermal-like equation of state. Our results widen the explored parameter space for the hydrodynamics of embedded BBHs and demonstrate that their orbital evolution in AGN discs is a complex, multifaceted problem. In this paper, very blue-shifted broad Hα with a shifted velocity of ∼2200 km s–1 is reported in the low-redshift type-1.9 active galactic nucleus (AGN) SDSS J1052+1036. Blue-shifted broad emission lines may arise owing to the presence of a rotating gas disc around a central black hole (BH), but may also be a signature of rare phenomena such as the gravitational wave recoil of a supermassive BH (rSMBH) or the presence of a binary BH (BBH) system. Here, owing to the higher shifted velocity of the stronger and wider blue-shifted broad Hα, the BBH system is disfavoured. Meanwhile, if this object contains a rSMBH, intrinsic obscuration with E (B – V) ≤ 0.6 should lead to a detectable broad Hβ, indicating that the rSMBH scenario is not preferred. We find that the blue-shifted broad Hα can be well explained by emission from an AGN disc, indicating that SDSS J1052+1036 is likely a disc-emitting AGN. In order to determine which scenario, a rSMBH or a disc-emitter, is preferred, a re-observed spectrum in 2025 could provide robust clues, with a disc-emitter probably leading to clear variations of peak positions, peak separations, and/or peak intensity ratios in broad Hα, but with a rSMBH scenario probably leading to no variations of peak separations in broad Hα.
