Hybrid materials exhibit excellent properties than their components. Herein, boron nitride and boron nitride/nickel oxide (BN80/NiO20) nanocomposite films were deposited by the drop-casting method. X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy and field emission scanning electron microscopy techniques have been utilized for determining structural, defect chemistry and morphological properties of deposited films. The structural analysis confirmed the formation of BN and NiO phases. Nelson–Riley Factor analysis and Raman analysis revealed the presence of defect states in BN80/NiO20 film. Electrical properties of films were studied in the presence of various concentrations of ammonia gas molecules at different temperatures. BN80/NiO20 composite film showed higher resistivity in the presence of ammonia gas than pure BN film. Variation of electrical resistivity with ammonia gas concentration has been explained through a proposed model. Also, to obtain the resistivity variation concerning ammonia gas concentrations at different temperatures, the linear regression method was used. This work insight the electrical behavior of composite material at different gas concentrations which opens these materials for exploration towards gas sensing and different functional applications. In this study, boron nitride (BN) and its composites with nickel oxide (NiO) have been deposited on glass substrates. Structural, morphological as well as temperature-dependent electrical properties of BN-based nanocomposite films have been investigated. The structural analysis confirmed the phase formation of BN and NiO. X-ray diffraction analysis inferred the presence of defect states in deposited films which may affect the electrical properties. Results revealed that the conductivity of deposited films depends upon composite composition and temperature. A charge transport mechanism for deposited films has been proposed for a better understanding of the transport process. Composite materials possess superior properties than their constituents which opens a field for different functional application devices. In present work films of boron nitride, nickel oxide and boron nitride/nickel oxide nanocomposite has been deposited using the drop-casting method. The structural analysis confirmed BN and NiO phase formation and the presence of defect states in the deposited films. The morphological analysis also shows the change in the morphology with composite formation. Electrical results revealed that BN 60 /NiO 40 nanocomposite possesses more resistivity than BN in the presence of hydrogen gas. A model has been proposed to explain variation in the electrical properties. To calculate the variation in resistivity with the change in hydrogen gas concentration, a linear regression technique has been used. It is observed that all BN, BN 60 /NiO 40 , and NiO films show significant (p < 0.001) positive change in resistivity with the increase in gas concentration. Two-dimensional materials are promising candidates for future electronics. Photoelectrical properties of BN, BN 80 /NiO 20 , BN 60 /NiO 40 composites and NiO have been investigated. Light intensity dependency of electrical conductivity is illustrated. The effect of gold nanoparticles loading on photo-conductivities has been elaborated. Results showed that loading of gold nanoparticles enhanced the photoconductivity of BN 80 /NiO 20 nanocomposite up to 1000 times. The higher photo-conductivities of gold nanoparticles loaded films may be ascribed to quantum tunnelling of electrons generated due to localized surface plasmon resonance of gold nanoparticles.
