The discovery of a new spectral class – the Y dwarfs – by NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer has enabled researchers to study the physics of the coldest brown dwarfs and to determine the prevalence of brown dwarfs in the Milky Way. The boundary between T dwarfs and Y dwarfs roughly coincides with the location where the J – H colors of brown dwarfs, as predicted by models, turn back to the red at effective temperatures below ∼400 K. Preliminary trigonometric parallax measurements show that the T/Y boundary appears also to correspond to the point at which the absolute H (1.6 µm) and W2 (4.6 µm) magnitudes plummet. Using these new distance measurements, it is found that hydrogenburning stars outnumber brown dwarfs by approximately a factor of six in the solar neighborhood. Using simulations describing the mass function as a power law or as a lognormal, we find that both the shape and predicted space densities in the mid-T to early-Y regime can be fit only if these functions are normalized downward to better reflect the relative paucity of brown dwarfs. The sample of currently identified Y dwarfs probes the field mass function to masses of ∼5 M_(Jup), but confirmation of additional, colder Y dwarfs from WISE is needed to determine whether the low-mass limit to star formation has yet been measured.

We present the first mid-infrared spectra of brown dwarfs, together with observations of a low-mass star. Our targets are the M3.5 dwarf GJ 1001A, the L8 dwarf DENIS-P J0255-4700, and the T1/T6 binary system epsilon Indi Ba/Bb. As expected, the mid-infrared spectral morphology of these objects changes rapidly with spectral class due to the changes in atmospheric chemistry resulting from their differing effective temperatures and atmospheric structures. By taking advantage of the unprecedented sensitivity of the Infrared Spectrograph on the Spitzer Space Telescope we have detected the 7.8 micron methane and 10 micron ammonia bands for the first time in brown dwarf spectra.

A common proper motion survey of M dwarf stars within 8 pc of the Sun reveals no new stellar or brown dwarf companions at wide separations (~100-1400 AU). This survey tests whether the brown dwarf ``desert'' extends to large separations around M dwarf stars and further explores the census of the solar neighborhood. The sample includes 66 stars north of -30 degrees and within 8 pc of the Sun. Existing first epoch images are compared to new J-band images of the same fields an average of 7 years later to reveal proper motion companions within a ~4 arcminute radius of the primary star. No new companions are detected to a J-band limiting magnitude of ~16.5, corresponding to a companion mass of ~40 Jupiter masses for an assumed age of 5 Gyr at the mean distance of the objects in the survey, 5.8 pc., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in AJ

We have monitored photometrically the Y0 brown dwarf WISEP J173835.52+273258.9 (W1738) at both near- and mid-infrared wavelengths. This ~1 Gyr-old 400K dwarf is at a distance of 8pc and has a mass around 5 M_Jupiter. We observed W1738 using two near-infrared filters at lambda~1um, Y and J, on Gemini observatory, and two mid-infrared filters at lambda~4um, [3.6] and [4.5], on the Spitzer observatory. Twenty-four hours were spent on the source by Spitzer on each of June 30 and October 30 2013 UT. Between these observations, around 5 hours were spent on the source by Gemini on each of July 17 and August 23 2013 UT. The mid-infrared light curves show significant evolution between the two observations separated by four months. We find that a double sinusoid can be fit to the [4.5] data, where one sinusoid has a period of 6.0 +/- 0.1 hours and the other a period of 3.0 +/- 0.1 hours. We discuss color selection of rare objects in a wide-field, multiband survey spanning from the optical to the mid-infrared. Simple color criteria simultaneously identify and distinguish two of the most sought after astrophysical sources: the coolest brown dwarfs and the most distant quasars. We present spectroscopically-confirmed examples of each class identified in the IRAC Shallow Survey of the Bootes field of the NOAO Deep Wide-Field Survey. ISS J142950.9+333012 is a T4.5 brown dwarf at a distance of approximately 42 pc, and ISS J142738.5+331242 is a radio-loud quasar at redshift z=6.12. Our selection criteria identify a total of four candidates over 8 square degrees of the Bootes field. Spitzer post-cryogen observations to perform a moderate depth survey distributed around the sky are proposed. Field centers are chosen to be WISE brown dwarf candidates, which will typically be 160 µJy at 4.7 µm and randomly distributed around the sky. The Spitzer observations will give much higher sensitivity, higher angular resolution, and a time baseline to measure both proper motions and possibly parallaxes. The distance and velocity data obtained on the WISE brown dwarf candidates will greatly improve our knowledge of the mass and age distribution of brown dwarfs. The outer parts of the Spitzer fields surrounding the WISE positions will provide a deep survey in many narrow fields of view distributed around the sky, and the volume of this survey will contain many more distant brown dwarfs, and many extragalactic objects.

We present analysis of Hubble Space Telescope images of 82 nearby field late-M and L dwarfs. We resolve 13 of these systems into double M/L dwarf systems and identify an additional possible binary. Combined with previous observations of 20 L dwarfs, we derive an observed binary fraction for ultracool dwarfs of 17+4-3%, where the statistics included systems with separations in the range 1.6-16 A.U. We argue that accounting for biases and incompleteness leads to an estimated binary fraction 15+-5% in the range 1.6-16 A.U. No systems wider than 16 A.U. are seen, implying that the wide companion frequency is less than 1.7%; the distribution of orbital separation is peaked at ~2-4 A.U. and differs greatly from the G dwarf binary distribution. Indirect evidence suggests that the binary fraction is ~5+-3% for separations less than 1.6 A.U. We find no evidence for differences in the binary fraction between stellar late-M and L dwarfs and substellar L dwarfs. We note, however, that the widest (>10 A.U.) systems in our sample are all of earlier (M8-L0) spectral type; a larger sample is needed determine if this is a real effect. One system with a spectral type of L7 has a secondary that is fainter in the HST F814W filter but brighter in F1042M; we argue that this secondary is an early-T dwarf., To appear in June 2003 Astronomical Journal

Trigonometric parallax determinations are presented for 28 late type dwarfs and brown dwarfs, including eight M dwarfs with spectral types between M7 and M9.5, 17 L dwarfs with spectral types between L0 and L8, and three T dwarfs. Broadband photometry at CCD wavelengths (VRIz) and/or near-IR wavelengths (JHK) are presented for these objects and for 24 additional late-type dwarfs. Supplemented with astrometry and photometry from the literature, including ten L and two T dwarfs with parallaxes established by association with bright, usually HIPPARCOS primaries, this material forms the basis for studying various color-color and color-absolute magnitude relations. The I-J color is a good predictor of absolute magnitude for late-M and L dwarfs. M_J becomes monotonically fainter with I-J color and with spectral type through late-L dwarfs, then brightens for early-T dwarfs. The combination of zJK colors alone can be used to classify late-M, early-L, and T dwarfs accurately, and to predict their absolute magnitudes, but is less effective at untangling the scatter among mid- and late-L dwarfs. The mean tangential velocity of these objects is found to be slightly less than that for dM stars in the solar neighborhood, consistent with a sample with a mean age of several Gyr. Using colors to estimate bolometric corrections, and models to estimate stellar radii, effective temperatures are derived. To highlight the need for new spectral types, a brief review of the discovery of very low luminosity dwarfs — cooler than type M9.5 — is presented. The reasoning behind the choice of letters “L” and “T” is also given. Our philosophy of spectral classification is explained and we use this philosophy to construct an L dwarf typing scheme. The scheme, originally developed on only 25 spectra, has now been shown to work successfully on a sample of 92 L dwarfs.

We present 2MASS discoveries of four L and T dwarf companions to nearby stars. Using spectral types of the companions and age estimates of the primaries, we estimate masses for these discoveries and compare them to four other L and T dwarf companions from the literature. Temperatures range from ~2000 to ~750 K, ages range from ~0.2 to ~3 Gyr, and masses range from ~0.035 to ~0.075 MO.

We discuss methods for classifying T dwarfs based on spectral morphological features and indices. T dwarfs are brown dwarfs which exhibit methane absorption bands at 1.6 and 2.2 μm. Spectra at red optical (6300–10100 A) and near-infrared (1–2.5 μm) wavelengths are presented, and differences between objects are noted and discussed. Spectral indices useful for classification schemes are presented. We conclude that near-infrared spectral classification is generally preferable for these cool objects, with data sufficient to resolve the 1.17 and 1.25 μm K I doublets lines being most valuable. Spectral features sensitive to gravity are discussed, with the strength of the K-band peak used as an example. Such features may be used to derive a two-dimensional scheme based on temperature and mass, in analogy to the MK temperature and luminosity classes.

We report the initial results from a program of HST/STIS spectroscopy of “hot” low-mass (brown dwarf) companions to nearby young stars identified in our HST/NICMOS coronagraphic imaging survey. We present spectra of the likely 20 and 40 Jupiter mass companions to CD -33° 7795 and HR 7329, respectively, the binary companions to GL 577 (both, possibly, brown dwarfs), and the low-mass star GL 503.2B. We discuss the state of our recent follow-up observations of the putative companion to TWA 6. We add these companions to the very few already known, allowing the first steps to be taken toward answering many fundamental questions regarding the formation and evolution of multiple systems with components near and below the stellar/substellar boundary.

The NIRSPEC Brown Dwarf Spectroscopic Survey is a project to obtain a consistent set of high-quality near-IR spectra for each spectral class and sub-class of low-mass and/or sub- stellar objects to provide a new data base for models of the atmosphere of brown dwarfs and extra-solar giant planets. Most of the current targets are L-dwarfs and T-dwarfs discovered by the 2MASS. The survey is begin performed with the recently-commissioned near-IR spectrometer, NIRSPEC, a 1-5 micrometers cryogenic spectrograph at the WM Keck Observatory on Mauna Kea, using resolving powers of R equals 2,500-25,000. Preliminary results for four sources, three L-dwarfs and one T-dwarf, are presented here. Spectra from 1.13-2.33 micrometers at an average resolution of R equals 2,500 illustrate the development of deep steam bands and the weakening of FeH through the L-sequence, and the emergence of methane bands in the T-dwarfs. Complex detail in the spectra are the result of blending of numerous unresolved molecular transitions.

We report the discovery of a widely separated (258$\farcs3\pm0\farcs$4) T dwarf companion to the Gl 570ABC system. This new component, Gl 570D, was initially identified from the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS). Its near-infrared spectrum shows the 1.6 and 2.2 $\micron$ CH$_4$ absorption bands characteristic of T dwarfs, while its common proper motion with the Gl 570ABC system confirms companionship. Gl 570D (M$_J$ = 16.47$\pm$0.07) is nearly a full magnitude dimmer than the only other known T dwarf companion, Gl 229B, and estimates of L = (2.8$\pm$0.3)x10$^{-6}$ L$_{\sun}$ and T$_{eff}$ = 750$\pm$50 K make it significantly cooler and less luminous than any other known brown dwarf companion. Using evolutionary models by Burrows et al. and an adopted age of 2-10 Gyr, we derive a mass estimate of 50$\pm$20 M$_{Jup}$ for this object., 13 pages, 2 figures, 2 tables, accepted by ApJL

Analysis of initial observations from near-infrared sky surveys has shown that the resulting photometric catalogues, combined with far-red optical data, provide an extremely effective method of finding isolated, very low-temperature objects in the general field. Follow-up observations have already identified more than 25 sources with temperatures cooler than the latest M dwarfs. A comparison with detailed model predictions (Burrows & Sharp) indicates that these L dwarfs have effective temperatures between ~2000\pm100 K and 1500\pm100 K, while the available trigonometric parallax data place their luminosities at between 10^{-3.5} and 10^{-4.3} L_solar. Those properties, together with the detection of lithium in one-third of the objects, are consistent with the majority having substellar masses. The mass function cannot be derived directly, since only near-infrared photometry and spectral types are available for most sources, but we can incorporate VLM/brown dwarf models in simulations of the Solar Neighbourhood population and constrain Psi(M) by comparing the predicted L-dwarf surface densities and temperature distributions against observations from the DENIS and 2MASS surveys. The data, although sparse, can be represented by a power-law mass function, Psi(M) ~ M^{-alpha}, with 1 < alpha < 2. Current results favour a value nearer the lower limit. If alpha = 1.3, then the local space density of 0.075 > M/M_solar > 0.01 brown dwarfs is 0.10 systems pc^{-3}. We present the discovery of a candidate substellar object in a survey of young stars in the solar vicinity using the sensitivity and spatial resolution afforded by the NICMOS coronagraph on the Hubble Space Telescope. The H=12.1 mag object was discovered approximately 2 arcsec from the TW Hydrae Association member CoD -33 7795 (TWA 5), and the photometry implies a spectral type M8-M8.5, with a temperature of approximately 2600K. We estimate that the probability of a chance alignment with a background objectof this nature is < 2 X 10^(-5), and therefore postulate the object (TWA 5B) is physically associated at a projected separation of 100 AU. Given the likely youth of the primary (~ 10 Myr), current brown dwarf cooling models predict a mass of approximately 20 Jupiter masses for TWA 5B., LATEX, 10 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ Letters
