As part of our comprehensive, ongoing characterization of the low-mass end of the main sequence in the Solar neighbourhood, we used the OSIRIS instrument at the 10.4 m Gran Telescopio Canarias to acquire low- and mid-resolution (R |${\approx }$| 300 and R |${\approx }$| 2500) optical spectroscopy of 53 late-M and L ultracool dwarfs. Most of these objects are known but poorly investigated and lacking complete kinematics. We measured spectral indices, determined spectral types (six of which are new) and inferred effective temperature and surface gravity from BT-Settl synthetic spectra fits for all objects. We were able to measure radial velocities via line centre fitting and cross correlation for 46 objects, 29 of which lacked previous radial velocity measurements. Using these radial velocities in combination with the latest Gaia DR3 data, we also calculated Galactocentric space velocities. From their kinematics, we identified two candidates outside of the thin disc and four in young stellar kinematic groups. Two further ultracool dwarfs are apparently young field objects: 2MASSW J1246467+402715 (L4β), which has a potential, weak lithium absorption line, and G 196–3B (L3β), which was already known as young due to its well-studied primary companion. We report the discovery of five white dwarf + ultracool dwarf systems identified as common proper motion wide binaries in the Gaia Catalogue of Nearby Stars. The discoveries include a white dwarf + L subdwarf binary, VVV 1256−62AB, a gravitationally bound system located 75.6 |$^{+1.9}_{-1.8}$|  pc away with a projected separation of 1375 |$^{+35}_{-33}$|  au. The primary is a cool DC white dwarf with a hydrogen dominated atmosphere, and has a total age of |$10.5^{+3.3}_{-2.1}$|  Gyr, based on white dwarf model fitting. The secondary is an L subdwarf with a metallicity of [M/H] = |$-0.72^{+0.08}_{-0.10}$| (i.e. [Fe/H] = |$-0.81\pm 0.10$|⁠) and |$T_{\rm eff}$| = 2298 |$^{+45}_{-43}$|  K based on atmospheric model fitting of its optical to near infrared spectrum, and likely has a mass just above the stellar/substellar boundary. The subsolar metallicity of the L subdwarf and the system's total space velocity of 406 km s−1 indicates membership in the Galactic halo, and it has a flat eccentric Galactic orbit passing within 1 kpc of the centre of the Milky Way every |$\sim$| 0.4 Gyr and extending to 15–31 kpc at apogal. VVV 1256−62B is the first L subdwarf to have a well-constrained age, making it an ideal benchmark of metal-poor ultracool dwarf atmospheres and evolution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Gaia DR3 provided a first release of RP spectra and astrophysical parameters for ultracool dwarfs (UCDs). We used these Gaia RP spectra and astrophysical parameters to select the most outlying UCDs. These objects have spectral types of M7 or later and might be young brown dwarfs or low-metallicity objects. This work aimed to find UCDs that have Gaia RP spectra significantly different to the typical population. However, the intrinsic faintness of these UCDs in Gaia means that their spectra were typically rather low signal-to-noise ratio in Gaia DR3. This study is intended as a proof of concept for future iterations of the Gaia data releases. Based on well-studied subdwarfs and young objects, we created a spectral type-specific color ratio, defined using Gaia RP spectra; this ratio is then used to determine which objects are outliers. We then used the objects kinematics and photometry external to Gaia to cut down the list of outliers into a list of 'prime candidates'. We produce a list of 58 Gaia RP spectra outliers, seven of which we deem as prime candidates. Of these, six are likely subdwarfs and one is a known young stellar object. Four of six subdwarf candidates were known as subdwarfs already. The two other subdwarf candidates, namely 2MASS J03405673 + 2633447 (sdM8.5) and 2MASS J01204397 + 6623543 (sdM9), are new classifications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We identify and investigate known late M, L, and T dwarfs in the Gaia second data release. This sample is being used as a training set in the Gaia data processing chain of the ultracool dwarfs work package. We find 695 objects in the optical spectral range M8–T6 with accurate Gaia coordinates, proper motions, and parallaxes which we combine with published spectral types and photometry from large area optical and infrared sky surveys. We find that 100 objects are in 47 multiple systems, of which 27 systems are published and 20 are new. These will be useful benchmark systems and we discuss the requirements to produce a complete catalogue of multiple systems with an ultracool dwarf component. We examine the magnitudes in the Gaia passbands and find that the G BP magnitudes are unreliable and should not be used for these objects. We examine progressively redder colour–magnitude diagrams and see a notable increase in the main-sequence scatter and a bivariate main sequence for old and young objects. We provide an absolute magnitude – spectral subtype calibration for G and G RP passbands along with linear fits over the range M8–L8 for other passbands. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present new results from the Parallaxes of Southern Extremely Cool dwarfs program to measure parallaxes, proper motions and multiepoch photometry of L and early T dwarfs. The observations were made on 108 nights over the course of 8 yr using the Wide Field Imager on the ESO 2.2m telescope. We present 118 new parallaxes of L and T dwarfs of which 52 have no published values and 24 of the 66 published values are preliminary estimates from this program. The parallax precision varies from 1.0 to 15.5 mas with a median of 3.8 mas. We find evidence for two objects with long term photometric variation and 24 new moving group candidates. We cross-match our sample to published photometric catalogues and find standard magnitudes in up to 16 pass-bands from which we build spectral energy distributions and H–R diagrams. This allows us to confirm the theoretically anticipated minimum in radius between stars and brown dwarfs across the hydrogen burning minimum mass. We find the minimum occurs between L2 and L6 and verify the predicted steep dependence of radius in the hydrogen burning regime and the gentle rise into the degenerate brown dwarf regime. We present 27 new L subdwarfs and classify five of them as esdL and 22 as sdL. Our L subdwarf candidates were selected with the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey and Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Spectroscopic follow-up was carried out primarily with the OSIRIS spectrograph on the Gran Telescopio Canarias. Some of these new objects were followed up with the X-shooter instrument on the Very Large Telescope. We studied the photometric properties of the population of known L subdwarfs using colour-spectral type diagrams and colour–colour diagrams, by comparison with L dwarfs and main sequence stars, and identified new colour spaces for L subdwarf selection/study in current and future surveys. We further discussed the brown dwarf transition-zone and the observational stellar/substellar boundary. We found that about one-third of 66 known L subdwarfs are substellar objects, with two-thirds being very low-mass stars. We also present the Hertzsprung–Russell diagrams, spectral type–absolute magnitude corrections, and tangential velocities of 20 known L subdwarfs observed by the Gaia astrometry satellite. One of our L subdwarf candidates, ULAS J233227.03+123452.0, is a mildly metal-poor spectroscopic binary brown dwarf: a ∼L6p dwarf and a ∼T4p dwarf. We have followed up the three Y0 dwarfs WISEPA J041022.71+150248.5, WISEPA J173835.53+273258.9 and WISEPC J205628.90+145953.3 using the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope Wide Field Camera. We find parallaxes that are more consistent and accurate than previously published values. We estimate absolute magnitudes in photometric passbands from Y to W3 and find them to be consistent between the three Y0 dwarfs indicating that the inherent cosmic absolute magnitude spread of these objects is small. We examine the Mauna Kea Observatory system J magnitudes over the 4 yr time line and find small but significant monotonic variations. Finally, we estimate physical parameters from a comparison of spectra and parallax to equilibrium and non-equilibrium models finding values consistent with solar metallicity, an effective temperature of 450-475 K and log g of 4.0-4.5. SDSS J010448.46+153501.8 has previously been classified as an sdM9.5 subdwarf. However, its very blue J - K colour (-0.15 ± 0.17) suggests a much lower metallicity compared to normal sdM9.5 subdwarfs. Here, we re-classify this object as a usdL1.5 subdwarf based on a new optical and near-infrared spectrum obtained with X-shooter on the Very Large Telescope. Spectral fitting with BT-Settl models leads to Teff = 2450 ± 150 K, [Fe/H] = -2.4 ± 0.2 and log g = 5.5 ± 0.25. We estimate a mass for SDSS J010448.46+153501.8 of 0.086 ± 0.0015M☉ which is just below the hydrogen-burning minimum mass at [Fe/H] = -2.4 (~0.088 M☉) according to evolutionary models. Our analysis thus shows SDSS J010448.46+153501.8 to be the most metal-poor and highest mass substellar object known to-date.We found that SDSS J010448.46+153501.8 is joined by another five known L subdwarfs (2MASS J05325346+8246465, 2MASS J06164006−6407194, SDSS J125637.16−022452.2, ULAS J151913.03−000030.0 and 2MASS J16262034+3925190) in a 'halo brown dwarf transition zone' in the Teff-[Fe/H] plane, which represents a narrow mass range in which unsteady nuclear fusion occurs. Locating ultracool companions to M dwarfs is important for constraining low-mass formation models, the measurement of substellar dynamical masses and radii, and for testing ultracool evolutionary models. We present an optimized method for identifying M dwarfs which may have unresolved ultracool companions. We construct a catalogue of 440 694 M dwarf candidates, from Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer, Two Micron All-Sky Survey and Sloan Digital Sky Survey, based on optical- and near-infrared colours and reduced proper motion. With strict reddening, photometric and quality constraints we isolate a subsample of 36 898 M dwarfs and search for possible mid-infrared M dwarf + ultracool dwarf candidates by comparing M dwarfs which have similar optical/near-infrared colours (chosen for their sensitivity to effective temperature and metallicity). We present 1082 M dwarf + ultracool dwarf candidates for follow-up. Using simulated ultracool dwarf companions to M dwarfs, we estimate that the occurrence of unresolved ultracool companions amongst our M dwarf + ultracool dwarf candidates should be at least four times the average for our full M dwarf catalogue. We report the detection of sixteen binary systems from the Anglo-Australian Planet Search. Solutions to the radial velocity data indicate that the stars have companions orbiting with a wide range of masses, eccentricities and periods. Three of the systems potentially contain brown-dwarf companions while another two have eccentricities that place them in the extreme upper tail of the eccentricity distribution for binaries with periods less than 1000 d. For periods up to 12 years, the distribution of our stellar companion masses is fairly flat, mirroring that seen in other radial velocity surveys, and contrasts sharply with the current distribution of candidate planetary masses, which rises strongly below 10 MJ. When looking at a larger sample of binaries that have FGK star primaries as a function of the primary star metallicity, we find that the distribution maintains a binary fraction of ~43 ± 4 per cent between -1.0 and +0.6 dex in metallicity. This is in stark contrast to the giant exoplanet distribution. This result is in good agreement with binary formation models that invoke fragmentation of a collapsing giant molecular cloud, suggesting that this is the dominant formation mechanism for close binaries and not fragmentation of the primary star's remnant protoplanetary disc. Analysis of T dwarfs using model atmospheres has been hampered by the absence of reliable line lists for methane and ammonia. Newly computed high-temperature line lists for both of these important molecules are now available, so it is timely to investigate the appearance of the various absorption features in T dwarfs in order to better understand their atmospheres and validate the new line lists. We present high-quality R ~ 5000 Gemini/NIFS 1.0-2.4 μm spectra of the T8 standard 2MASS 0415-0935 and the T9 standard UGPS 0722-0540. We use these spectra to identify numerous methane and ammonia features not previously seen and we discuss the implications for our understanding of T dwarf atmospheres. Among our results, we find that ammonia is the dominant opacity source between ~ 1.233-1.266 μm in UGPS 0722-0540, and we tentatively identify several absorption features in this wavelength range in the T9's spectrum which may be due entirely to ammonia opacity. Our results also suggest that water rather than methane is the dominant opacity source in the red half of the J band of the T8 dwarf. Water appears to be the main absorber in this wavelength region in the T9 dwarf until ~1.31 μm, when methane starts to dominate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present a new Y dwarf, WISE J030449.03−270508.3, confirmed from a candidate sample designed to pick out low-temperature objects from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) data base. The new object is typed Y0pec following a visual comparison with spectral standards, and lies at a likely distance of 10–17 pc. Its tangential velocity suggests thin disc membership, but it shows some spectral characteristics that suggest that it may be metal poor and/or older than previously identified Y0 dwarfs. Based on trends seen for warmer late-type T dwarfs, the Y-band flux peak morphology is indicative of sub-solar metallicity, and the enhanced red wing of the J-band flux peak offers evidence for high gravity and/or low metallicity (with associated model trends suggesting an age closer to ∼10 Gyr and mass in the range 0.02–0.03 M⊙). The UKIDSS Galactic Plane Survey (GPS) began in 2005 as a seven year effort to survey ∼1800 deg2 of the northern Galactic plane in the J, H, and K passbands. The survey included a second epoch of K-band data, with a baseline of two to eight years, for the purpose of investigating variability and measuring proper motions. We have calculated proper motions for 167 million sources in a 900 deg2 area located at l > 60° in order to search for new high proper motion objects. Visual inspection has verified 617 high proper motion sources (>200 mas yr−1) down to K = 17, of which 153 are new discoveries. Among these, we have a new spectroscopically confirmed T5 dwarf, an additional T dwarf with estimated type T6, 13 new L dwarf candidates, and two new common proper motion systems containing ultracool dwarf candidates. We provide improved proper motions for an additional 12 high proper motion stars that were independently discovered in the WISE data set during the course of this investigation. We have used the Two-Micron All-Sky Survey and the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer to look for ultracool dwarfs that are part of multiple systems containing main-sequence stars. We cross-matched L dwarf candidates from the surveys with Hipparcos and Gliese stars, finding two new systems. The first system, G255-34AB, is an L2 dwarf companion to a K8 star, at a distance of 36 pc. We estimate its bolometric luminosity as log L/L⊙ = −3.78 ± 0.045 and Teff = 2080 ± 260 K. The second system, GJ499ABC, is a triple, with an L5 dwarf as a companion to a binary with an M4 and K5 star. These two new systems bring the number of L dwarf plus main-sequence star multiple systems to 24, which we discuss. We consider the binary fraction for L dwarfs and main-sequence stars, and further assess possible unresolved multiplicity within the full companion sample. This analysis shows that some of the L dwarfs in this sample might actually be unresolved binaries themselves, since their MJ appears to be brighter than the expected for their spectral types. We present a new sample of mid-L to mid-T dwarfs with effective temperatures of 1100–1700 K selected from the UKIDSS Large Area Survey (LAS) and confirmed with infrared spectra from X-shooter/Very Large Telescope. This effective temperature range is especially sensitive to the formation history of Galactic brown dwarfs and allows us to constrain the form of the sub-stellar birth rate, with sensitivity to differentiate between a flat (stellar like) birth rate and an exponentially declining form. We present the discovery of 63 new L and T dwarfs from the UKIDSS LAS DR7, including the identification of 12 likely unresolved binaries, which form the first complete sub-set from our programme, covering 495 square degrees of sky, complete to J = 18.1. We compare our results for this sub-sample with simulations of differing birth rates for objects of masses 0.10–0.03 M⊙ and ages 1–10 Gyr. We find that the more extreme birth rates (e.g. a halo type form) can likely be excluded as the true form of the birth rate. In addition, we find that although there is substantial scatter we find a preference for a mass function, with a power-law index α in the range −1 < α < 0 that is consistent (within the errors) with the studies of late T dwarfs. ABSTRACT We present an ultra-cool dwarf (UCD) catalogue compiled from low southern Galactic latitudes and mid-plane, from a cross-correlation of the Two Micron All-Sky Survey (2MASS) and the SuperCOSMOS survey. The catalogue contains 246 members identified from 5042 deg2 within 220° ≤ ℓ ≤ 360° and 0° < ℓ ≤ 30°, for | b| ≤ 15°. Sixteen candidates are spectroscopically confirmed in the near-infrared as UCDs with spectral types from M7.5V to L9, the latest being the unusual blue L dwarf 2MASS J11263991−5003550. We test two contemporary low-mass atmospheric models using three L dwarfs with distances and published spectra. We find that the two models do not predict the same trends for temperature, gravity and metallicity in absorption lines. We find that one model appears to better reflect the temperature, but this sample is too small to investigate the other parameters in depth. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

We present i and z photometry for 25 T dwarfs and 1 L dwarf. Combined with published photometry, the data show that the i -- z, z -- Y, and z -- J colors of T dwarfs are very red, and continue to increase through to the late-type T dwarfs, with a hint of a saturation for the latest types with Teff ≈ 600 K. We present new 0.7-1.0 µm and 2.8-.2 µm spectra for the very late type T dwarf UGPS J072227.51-054031.2, as well as improved astrometry for this dwarf. Examination of the spectral energy distribution using new and published data, with Saumon & Marley models, shows that the dwarf has Teff = 505 ± 10 K, a mass of 3-11 MJupiter, and an age between 60 Myr and 1 Gyr. This young age is consistent with the thin disk kinematics of the dwarf. The mass range overlaps with that usually considered to be planetary, despite this being an unbound object discovered in the field near the Sun. This apparently young rapid rotator is also undergoing vigorous atmospheric mixing, as determined by the IRAC and WISE 4.5 µm photometry and the Saumon & Marley models. The optical spectrum for this 500 K object shows clearly detected lines of the neutral alkalis Cs and Rb, which are emitted from deep atmospheric layers with temperatures of 900-1200 K. We report the discovery of 47 new T dwarfs in the Fourth Data Release (DR4) from the Large Area Survey (LAS) of the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope (UKIRT) Infrared Deep Sky Survey with spectral types ranging from T0 to T8.5. These bring the total sample of LAS T dwarfs to 80 as of DR4. In assigning spectral types to our objects we have identified eight new spectrally peculiar objects, and divide seven of them into two classes. H2O- H-early have a H2O- H index that differs with the H2O- J index by at least two subtypes. CH4- J-early have a CH4- J index that disagrees with the H2 index by at least two subtypes. We have ruled out binarity as a sole explanation for both types of peculiarity, and suggest that they may represent hitherto unrecognized tracers of composition and/or gravity. Clear trends in and are apparent for our sample, consistent with weakening absorption in the red wing of the K i line at 0.77 μm with decreasing effective temperature. We have used our sample to estimate space densities for T6–T9 dwarfs. By comparing our sample to Monte Carlo simulations of field T dwarfs for various mass functions of the form , we have placed weak constraints on the form of the field mass function. Our analysis suggests that the substellar mass function is declining at lower masses, with negative values of α preferred. We identify 806 ultracool dwarfs (of which 34 are newly discovered L dwarfs) from their Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) riz photometry and obtain proper motions through cross-matching with the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) and Two-Micron All-Sky Survey (2MASS). Proper-motion and distance constraints show that nine of our ultracool dwarfs are members of widely separated binary systems: SDSS 0101 (K5V+M9.5V), SDSS 0207 (M1.5V+L3V), SDSS 0832 (K3III+L3.5V), SDSS 0858 (M4V+L0V), SDSS 0953 (M4V+M9.5V), SDSS 0956 (M2V+M9V), SDSS 1304 (M4.5V+L0V), SDSS 1631 (M5.5V+M8V) and SDSS 1638 (M4V+L0V). One of these (SDSS 0832) is shown to be a companion to the bright K3 giant η Cancri. Such primaries can provide age and metallicity constraints for any companion objects, yielding excellent benchmark objects. η Cancri AB is the first wide ultracool dwarf + giant binary system identified. We present new observations and analysis that constrain the metallicity of η Cancri A to be near-solar, and use recent evolutionary models to constrain the age of the giant to be 2.2–6.1 Gyr. If η Cancri B is a single object, we estimate its physical attributes to be mass = 63–82 = 1800 ± 150 K, . Its colours are non-typical when compared with other ultracool dwarfs, and we also assess the possibility that η Cancri B is itself an unresolved binary, showing that the combined light of an L4 + T4 system could provide a reasonable explanation for its colours. We report the discovery of a very cool d/sdL7+T7.5p common proper motion binary system, SDSS J1416+13AB, found by cross-matching the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope (UKIRT) Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) Large Area Survey Data Release 5 (UKIDSS LAS DR4) against the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7. The d/sdL7 is blue in and and has other features suggestive of low metallicity and/or high gravity. The T7.5p displays spectral peculiarity seen before in earlier type dwarfs discovered in UKIDSS LAS DR4, and referred to as CH4- J-early peculiarity, where the CH4- J index, based on the absorption to the red side of the J-band peak, suggests an earlier spectral type than the H2O- J index, based on the blue side of the J-band peak, by ∼2 subtypes. We suggest that CH4- J-early peculiarity arises from low metallicity and/or high gravity, and speculate as to its use for classifying T dwarfs. UKIDSS and follow-up United Kingdom Infrared Telescope/Wide Field CAMera (UKIRT/WFCAM) photometry shows the T dwarf to have the bluest near-infrared colours yet seen for such an object with . Warm Spitzer IRAC photometry shows the T dwarf to have extremely red , which is the reddest yet seen for a substellar object. The lack of parallax measurement for the pair limits our ability to estimate parameters for the system. However, applying a conservative distance estimate of 5–15 pc suggests a projected separation in range 45–135 au. By comparing colours of the T dwarf to spectral models, we estimate that and , with . This suggests a mass of ∼30 MJupiter for the T dwarf and an age of ∼10 Gyr for the system. The primary would then be a 75 MJupiter object with and a relatively dust-free atmosphere. Given the unusual properties of the system we caution that these estimates are uncertain. We associate 132 low-mass ultracool dwarfs in the southern hemisphere as candidate members of five moving groups (MGs) using photometric and astrometric selection techniques. Of these objects, we present high-resolution spectroscopy for seven candidates and combine these with previous measurements from the literature to determine spectral types and radial velocities. We thus constrain distance and space motion spectroscopically, allowing the kinematic membership of the MGs to be assessed. Possible membership of MGs has allowed ages and metallicities to be constrained for these objects and evolutionary models have been used to estimate their mass. We estimate that up to ∼75 of our candidate MG members should be genuine, and discuss future work that will confirm and exploit this major new sample. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report the discovery of a brown dwarf on an eccentric orbit and with a semimajor axis that places it in the brown dwarf desert region around the star HD 191760. The star has a spectral type of G3IV/V and a metallicity ([Fe/H]) of 0.29 dex. HD 191760 adds to the small number of metal-rich stars with brown dwarf companions. The brown dwarf (HD ) is found to have an orbital period of d and semimajor axis of , placing it firmly in the brown dwarf desert. The eccentricity of HD is found to be , meaning it reaches as close as 0.5 au from the host star. Dynamical simulations indicate that no inner planets could reside at separations beyond ∼0.17 au due to the disastrous gravity imposed by HD . In addition to these first results, we also refine the orbits found for the exoplanets around the stars HD 48265, HD 143361 and HD 154672. We report the discovery of three very late T dwarfs in the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) Third Data Release: ULAS J101721.40+011817.9 (ULAS1017), ULAS J123828.51+095351.3 (ULAS1238) and ULAS J133553.45+113005.2 (ULAS1335). We detail optical and near-infrared (NIR) photometry for all three sources, and mid-IR photometry for ULAS1335. We use NIR spectra of each source to assign spectral types T8p (ULAS1017), T8.5 (ULAS1238) and T9 (ULAS1335) to these objects. ULAS1017 is classed as a peculiar T8 (T8p) due to appearing as a T8 dwarf in the J band, whilst exhibiting H- and K-band flux ratios consistent with a T6 classification. Through comparison to BT-Settl model spectra we estimate that ULAS1017 has , and , assuming solar metallicity. This estimate for gravity is degenerate with varying metallicity. We estimate that ULAS1017 has an age of 1.6–15 Gyr, a mass of 33– and lies at a distance of 31–54 pc. We do not estimate atmospheric parameters for ULAS1238 due to a lack of K-band photometry. We extend the unified scheme of Burgasser et al. to the type T9 and suggest the inclusion of the index to replace the now saturated J-band indices. We propose ULAS1335 as the T9 spectral type standard. ULAS1335 is the same spectral type as ULAS J003402.77−005206.7 and CFBDS J005910.90−011401.3. We argue that given the similarity of the currently known >T8 dwarfs to the rest of the T dwarf sequence, the suggestion of the Y0 spectral class for these objects is premature. Comparison of model spectra with that of ULAS1335 suggest a temperature below 600 K, possibly combined with low gravity and/or high metallicity. We find ULAS1335 to be extremely red in NIR to mid-IR colours, with . This is the reddest NIR to mid-IR colour yet observed for a T dwarf. The NIR to mid-IR spectral energy distribution of ULAS1335 further supports , and we estimate for ULAS1335. We estimate that ULAS1335 has an age of 0.6–5.3 Gyr, a mass of 15– and lies at a distance of 8–12 pc. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present the discovery of 15 new T2.5–T7.5 dwarfs (with estimated distances ∼24–93 pc), identified in the first three main data releases of the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope (UKIRT) Infrared Deep Sky Survey. This brings the total number of T dwarfs discovered in the Large Area Survey (LAS) (to date) to 28. These discoveries are confirmed by near-infrared spectroscopy, from which we derive spectral types on the unified scheme of Burgasser et al. Seven of the new T dwarfs have spectral types of T2.5–T4.5, five have spectral types of T5–T5.5, one is a T6.5p and two are T7–7.5. We assess spectral morphology and colours to identify T dwarfs in our sample that may have non-typical physical properties (by comparison to solar neighbourhood populations), and find that three of these new T dwarfs may have unusual metallicity, two may have low surface gravity, and one may have high surface gravity. The colours of the full sample of LAS T dwarfs show a possible trend to bluer with decreasing effective temperature, and some interesting colour changes in and (deserving further investigation) beyond T8. The LAS T dwarf sample from the first and second main data releases show good evidence for a good level of completion to . By accounting for the main sources of incompleteness (selection, follow-up and spatial) as well as the effects of unresolved binarity, Malmquist and Eddington bias, we estimate that there are dwarfs in the volume of the LAS second data release. This value is most consistent with theoretical predictions if the substellar mass function exponent ) lies between −1.0 and 0. This is consistent with the latest 2-Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS)/Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) constraint (which is based on lower number statistics) and is significantly lower than the suggested by L dwarf field populations, which is possibly a result of the lower mass range probed by the T dwarf class. We present high-resolution mid-infrared spectra of M dwarfs. The mid-infrared region of the spectra of cool low-mass stars contains pure rotational water vapour transitions that may provide us with a new methodology in the determination of the effective temperatures for low-mass stars. We identify and assign water transitions in these spectra and determine how sensitive each pure rotational water transition is to small (25 K) changes in effective temperature. We find that, of the 36 confirmed and assigned pure rotational water transitions, at least 10 should be sensitive enough to be used as temperature indicators. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present the discovery of the widest known ultracool dwarf–white dwarf binary. This binary is the first spectroscopically confirmed widely separated system from our target sample. We have used the Two-Micron All-Sky Survey (2MASS) and SuperCOSMOS archives in the southern hemisphere, searching for very widely separated ultracool dwarf–white dwarf binaries, and find one common proper motion system, with a separation of 3650–5250 au at an estimated distance of 41–59 pc, making it the widest known system of this type. Spectroscopy reveals 2MASS J0030−3740 is a DA white dwarf with and . We spectroscopically type the ultracool dwarf companion (2MASS J0030−3739) as M9 ± 1 and estimate a mass of and , placing it near the mass limit for brown dwarfs. We estimate the age of the system to be >1.94 Gyr (from the white dwarf cooling age and the likely length of the main-sequence lifetime of the progenitor) and suggest that this system and other such wide binaries can be used as benchmark ultracool dwarfs. We compute opacities for the electronic molecular band systems of CrH and CrD, and of MgH and MgD. The opacities are computed by making use of existing spectroscopic constants for MgH and CrH. These constants are adjusted for the different reduced masses of MgD and CrD. Frank–Condon factors are used to provide intensities for the individual vibronic bands. These results are used in the computation of synthetic spectra between and 1200 K with an emphasis on the realization of ‘deuterium test’, first proposed by Bejar et al. to distinguish brown dwarfs from planetary mass objects. We discuss the possible use of CrD and MgD electronic bands for the ‘deuterium test’. We find CrD to be the more promising of the two deuterides, potentially, the most useful bands of CrH/CrD are the and at 0.795 and 0.968 μm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We discuss the role of distances for understanding brown dwarfs and estimate the contribution expected by Gaia. We show that Gaia will only observe 25% of L and T dwarfs within 50pc which, at a conservative estimate, amounts to less than 400 objects. We discuss how Gaia results will nevertheless aid the ground-based programs providing reliable, bias free constraints for the calculation of parallaxes in an absolute system. We present a new estimate of the lithium abundance in the atmosphere of the brown dwarf LP 944−20. Our analysis is based on a self-consistent analysis of low-, intermediate- and high-resolution optical and near-infrared spectra. We obtain using fits of our synthetic spectra to the Li i resonance line doublet profiles observed with Very Large Telescope/Ultraviolet–Visual Echelle Spectrograph (VLT/UVES) and Anglo-Australian Telescope/Segmented Pupil/Image Reformatting Array of Lenslets (AAT/SPIRAL). This lithium abundance is over two orders of magnitude larger than previous estimates in the literature. In order to obtain good fits of the resonance lines of K i and Rb i and better fits to the TiO molecular absorption around the Li i resonance line, we invoke a semi-empirical model atmosphere with the dusty clouds located above the photosphere. The lithium abundance, however, is not changed by the effects of the dusty clouds. We discuss the implications of our estimate of the lithium abundance in LP 944−20 for the understanding of the properties of this benchmark brown dwarf. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present the discovery of 2MASS J11263991−5003550 identified as part of an ongoing survey to discover ultracool dwarfs in the Southern Galactic plane, using data from the 2MASS and SuperCOSMOS Sky Surveys. Strong FeH and H2O features in the near-infrared JH-band spectrum reveal characteristics seen in both mid-L and L–T transition type dwarfs. We suggest these may be attributable to holes in the condensate cloud layers in the atmosphere of a single substellar object, but cannot at present completely rule out the role of binarity as the possible cause. We also identify this object as a blue L dwarf, and explore the similar observable characteristics of these objects with those of the L–T transition. From this comparison we suggest that the temperature (and thus spectral type) at which the condensate cloud layer begins to break up/rain out, may be highly sensitive to small variations in metallicity. However, the JH-band spectrum of this object does not resemble that of the known L subdwarfs, and therefore extreme metal deficiency may not in fact be responsible for the discordant features. We estimate a spectral type of L9 ± 1, and measure a large proper motion of . Also, a spectrophotometric distance of 8.2 pc is estimated, possibly making this object the nearest easily observable single L–T transition object in the Southern hemisphere. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report the discovery of 21 hitherto unknown bright southern ultracool dwarfs with spectral types in the range M7 to L5.5, together with new observations of a further three late M dwarfs previously confirmed. Three more objects are already identified in the literature as high proper motion stars; we derive their spectral types for the first time. All objects were selected from the Two Micron All-Sky Survey (2MASS) all-sky and SuperCOSMOS point source data bases on the basis of their optical/near-infrared colours, J-band magnitudes and proper motions. Low-resolution JH spectroscopy with the European Southern Observatory (ESO)/New Technology Telescope (NTT) Son of Isaac (SOFI) spectrograph has confirmed the ultracool nature of 24 targets, out of a total of 25 candidates observed. Spectral types are derived by direct comparison with template objects and compared to results from H2O and FeH indices. We also report the discovery of one binary, as revealed by SOFI acquisition imaging; spectra were taken for both components. The spectral types of the two components are L2 and L4 and the distance ∼19 pc. Spectroscopic distances and transverse velocities are derived for the sample. Two ∼L5 objects lie only at ∼0 pc distant. Such nearby objects are excellent targets for further study to derive their parallaxes and to search for fainter, later companions with adaptive optics and/or methane imaging. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We have acquired high-resolution echelle spectra of 225 F6-M5 type stars in the Southern hemisphere. The stars are targets or candidates to be targets for the Anglo-Australian Planet Search. Ca ii H& K line cores were used to derive activity indices for all of these objects. The indices were converted to the Mt. Wilson system of measurements and values determined. A number of these stars had no previously derived activity indices. In addition, we have also included the stars from Tinney et al. using our Mt. Wilson calibration. The radial-velocity instability (also known as jitter) level was determined for all 21 planet-host stars in our data set. We find the jitter to be at a level considerably below the radial-velocity signatures in all but one of these systems. 19 stars from our sample were found to be active and thus have high levels of jitter. Using a simulated disc brown dwarf (BD) population, we find that new large area infrared surveys are expected to identify enough BDs covering wide enough mass–age ranges to potentially measure the present day mass function down to , and the BD formation history out to 10 Gyr, at a level that will be capable of establishing if BD formation follows star formation. We suggest these capabilities are best realized by spectroscopic calibration of BD properties ( and [M/H]) which when combined with a measured luminosity and an evolutionary model can give BD mass and age relatively independent of BD atmosphere models. Such calibration requires an empirical understanding of how BD spectra are affected by variations in these properties, and thus the identification and study of ‘benchmark BDs’ whose age and composition can be established independently. We identify the best sources of benchmark BDs as young open cluster members, moving group members, and wide (>1000 au) BD companions to both subgiant stars and high-mass white dwarfs (WDs). To accurately asses the likely number of wide companion BDs available, we have constrained the wide L dwarf companion fraction using the 2-Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS), and find a companion fraction of for separations of ∼1000–5000 au. This equates to a BD companion fraction of if one assumes an companion mass function. Using this BD companion fraction, we simulate populations of wide BD binaries, and estimate that subgiant–BD binaries, and benchmark WD–BD binaries could be identified using current and new facilities. The WD–BD binaries should all be identifiable using the Large Area Survey component of the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope (UKIRT) Infrared Deep Sky Survey, combined with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Discovery of the subgiant–BD binaries will require a near-infrared imaging campaign around a large (∼900) sample of Hipparcos subgiants. If identified, spectral studies of these benchmark BD populations could reveal the spectral sensitivities across the and [M/H] space probed by new surveys. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
