The UK planning system has a legitimate part to play in controlling aviation-related land uses on airfields. However, the legitimacy of the intervention of the planning system with regard to flying protocol is less clear. Research into local planning practice on the use and reuse of small airfields indicates that reuse is influenced by a range of attitudes and local circumstances. On a national level, there is no general presumption to support alternative development on airfield sites.

There are 240 small airfields in England and Wales and there is a lot of pressure for them to be developed into out-of-town developments or new houses. Long Marston airfield, in Warwickshire, United Kingdom, is a rock festival venue and it also hosts motor sport events. Local residents oppose both these uses. The airfield still has one operational runway. Wellesbourne airfield, in Warwickshire, is used for housing development and as a storage depot. The traffic is very disruptive and local people object to it. The use of airfields in this way needs to be carefully considered.
