An academic interest group in medicine is defined as a collective that can be made up of undergraduate students, residents, and/or teachers, who share as an object of interest the advancement and growth of a specific area of medicine. It is organized to carry out extracurricular academic and research activities. It is essential to stimulate participation in these interest groups, which allow the personal and professional growth of their members, being a tool that promotes and provides better opportunities for entry as candidates for graduate studies. The American College of Surgeons is one of the largest medical scientific societies with the participation of undergraduate students with an interest in surgery. This society mentions the benefits of participating in interest groups in surgery, specifically, it highlights the importance of contributing to these when looking for a surgical specialty, because they address issues such as: what is the mentioned specialty itself?, what are the details about the application process for each surgical specialty?, these groups can provide information on different residency programs, lifestyle benefits, and/or cons; in addition to improving practical skills through surgical technique workshops or various organized activities. Based on the above, the objective of this manuscript is to design a Step-by-step guide for the creation of a surgical interest group, in order to encourage participation by medical students, residents, and teachers in the research and academic field., Highlights • An academic interest group in surgery reinforces skills and knowledge. •An academic interest group in surgery can be coordinated by undergraduate students. •Academic interest groups in surgery generate national and international knowledge networks.

The Americas have an elevated number of leishmaniasis cases (accounting for two-thirds of the worldwide disease burden) and circulating Leishmania species, and are therefore of interest in terms of epidemiological surveillance. Here, we present a systematic review of Leishmania parasite species circulating in the countries of the American continent, together with complementary information on epidemiology and geospatial distribution. A database was built from data published between 1980 and 2018 on Leishmania species identified in most of the American countries. A total of 1499 georeferenced points were extracted from published articles and subsequently located to 14 countries in the Americas. Introduction In prostate cancer (PCa) patients who have been treated with radiotherapy and/or androgen deprivation therapy (ADT), palliative transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) is a management option in the presence of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). The present work seeks to describe the clinical and histopathological characteristics of patients with PCa taken to palliative TURP. Methods An observational, descriptive and retrospective study of patients with PCa who underwent palliative TURP for the relief of obstructive urinary symptoms at an oncology reference center between January 2006 and June 2014 was performed. Among the included patients were those with localized PCa treated with radiotherapy and those with advanced PCa with or without metastasis who had previously received ADT. Results Sixty-six patients with a diagnosis of PCa taken to palliative RTUP were identified. Fifty patients (78.4%) were received some type of ADT, seven patients (10.7%) received curative radiotherapy along with adjuvant ADT, five patients (7.8%) were previously treated with only radiotherapy, and two patients (3.1 %) had received no prior management and thus were taken to bilateral orchiectomy along with palliative TURP in a single surgical act. With regard to the pathology reports, tumor tissue was found in 50 patients (76%), and no tumor was observed in the remaining 16 patients (24%). In one case (1.5%), the Gleason score (GS) could not be determined due to the effects of orchiectomy. Under-staging in the grade group was evidenced in 23 patients (46.9%), over-staging in three patients (6.3%), and no difference in 23 patients (46.9%), when compared to the initial GS at biopsy. The mortality rate and the incidence of TURP syndrome were low (3.1% and 1.5%, respectively). A 46% reduction in the mean serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) value was documented when the preoperative and postoperative values were compared. Conclusion A decrease in the serum PSA levels was observed after palliative TURP, and despite having received ADT, it was possible to determine tumor pathology in the resected tissue, being able to identify a greater grade group compared the GS at the time of diagnosis. The palliative TURP proved to be a safe procedure to relieve LUTS in patients with advanced PCa, with a low morbidity and mortality rate.

This study developed a comprehensive proposal about political subjectivity configuration from the narratives that high-school students conducted around the social network Facebook. For this, a methodology with hermeneutical approach was used for recognizing subjectivity processes associated with the specific forms of interaction in this virtual social network, identifying the political sense involved in the narratives of young and analyzing the regulatory methods developed in relation to the responsible use of ICT. The data analysis was performed using the conceptual categories proposed by Ruiz and Prada (2012), which allowed the identification of world perspectives and opinions in young students, characterized by the appropriation of critical positions and defined ethic-political meanings with which they question reality.
