Abstract

The life and work of an artist, Yamamoto Hosui, who came from a background where his parents pursued farming and sericulture is discussed in regards to a person of his time, sketching using live models as subjects, a rare thing. Hosui had developed an earnest desire to study in Europe, the birthplace of western art, and through his persistent efforts and with the help of his connections; he was able to board a France-bound ship in February 1878.
