The potential of the laser material Tm-KLuW for highly efficient tunable operation in the 2-[mu]m spectral range is studied and compared with Tm:KGdW. The maximum output powers achieved are 1.4 and 4 w, respectively, and the corresponding slope efficiencies with respect to the absorbed power are 60% and 69%, respectively, which are promising for various applications.

The characterization and laser investigations of epitaxially grown Yb:KLuW-KLuW composites with optimized crystal quality at the interface are presented. The diode pumping of the epitaxial laser near 980 nm and highly efficient CW laser operation at room temperature without cooling is demonstrated.

The possibilities of Tm:KGdW as a tunable 2- Mum CW laser at room temperature is investigated. Comparisons are made of the doping levels, pump wavelengths and polarization configurations and the advantages of the monoclinic double tungstates over other Tm-hosts are shown.

The strongly anisotropic monoclinic double tungstate crystal KLu(WO4)(sub 2) was doped with Yb (super 3+) ions and the reaction was recorded. The results show that the combination is a highly efficient active laser medium in the 1-(mu)m spectral range for continuous-wave room-temperature operation and is very suitable for pumping with InGaAs laser diodes.

Good-optical-quality KGd(WO4)2 single crystals doped with erbium and ytterbium ions were grown using the top-seeded-solution growth slow-cooling method (TSSG). Spectroscopic characterization of erbium was performed in this host in terms of the polarized optical absorption and luminescence at RT and 6 K.

Spectroscopic properties of Ho[superscript 3+] laser channels in KGd(WO[subscript 4)[subscript 2 crystals is examined. Optical absorption, photoluminescence, and lifetime measurements are employed.
