Background There is a lack of information regarding the provision of parental leave for surgical careers. This survey study aims to evaluate the experience of maternity/paternity leave and views on work–life balance globally. Methods A 55-item online survey in 24 languages was distributed via social media as per CHERRIES guideline from February to March 2020. It explored parental leave entitlements, attitude towards leave taking, financial impact, time spent with children and compatibility of parenthood with surgical career. Results Of the 1393 (male : female, 514 : 829) respondents from 65 countries, there were 479 medical students, 349 surgical trainees and 513 consultants. Consultants had less than the recommended duration of maternity leave (43.8 versus 29.1 per cent), no paid maternity (8.3 versus 3.2 per cent) or paternity leave (19.3 versus 11.0 per cent) compared with trainees. Females were less likely to have children than males (36.8 versus 45.6 per cent, P = 0.010) and were more often told surgery is incompatible with parenthood (80.2 versus 59.5 per cent, P Conclusion Surgeons across the globe had inadequate parental leave. Significant gender disparity was seen in multiple aspects.

Nearby lightning strikes are prone to induce overvoltage transients in photovoltaic (PV) modules and in their power conditioning circuitry, which can permanently damage the PV system. Therefore, it becomes important to establish a method for accurate assessment of such transients. To this aim, the authors propose a three-dimensional (3D) semi-analytical numerical method to study the electromagnetic transients caused in PV modules by nearby lightning strikes. The approach bases on a semi-analytical expression of the magnetic vector potential generated by a geometrically complex lightning channel. The proposed method is able to calculate the transient overvoltage in a PV module, both in common and differential-mode, taking also into account capacitive and inductive couplings between the internal circuit and the PV metallic frame. Both modes are required to design the surge protective devices (SPDs) in PV power systems. Comparing to the models in literature, the proposed approach explicitly considers the complex geometry of the lightning channel. Statistical analysis allows assessing the impact of channel geometry by randomly generating a number of likely lightning paths. Results show that the lightning-induced overvoltage in a PV module is highly dependent on factors such as distance to the lightning channel and lightning channel geometry.

Photovoltaic (PV) systems are subject to nearby lightning strikes that can contribute to extremely high induced overvoltage transients. Recently, the authors introduced a 3D semi-analytical method to study the electromagnetic transients caused by these strikes in a PV module. In the present paper we develop an improved model of the PV module that: (a) takes into account high-frequency effects by modelling capacitive and inductive couplings, (b) considers the electrical insulation characteristics of the module, (c) includes the connection to a DC/DC converter. The whole process involves three major steps, i.e., the magnetic-field computation, the evaluation of both common-mode- and differential-mode-induced voltages across the PV module, and the use of the calculated voltages as input to a lumped equivalent circuit of the PV module connected to the DC/DC converter. In such a framework, the influence of the PV operating condition on the resulting electrical stresses is assessed, moreover, the relevance or insignificance of some parameters, such as the module insulation or the frame material, is demonstrated. Finally, results show that the induced overvoltage are highly dependent both on the grounding of the conducting parts and on the external conditions such as lightning current waveforms and lightning channel (LC) geometry.

Purpose The lightning phenomenon is one of the main threats in photovoltaic (PV) applications. Suitable protection systems avoid major damages from direct strikes but also nearby strikes may induce overvoltage transients in the module itself and in the power conditioning circuitry, which can permanently damage the system. The effects on the PV system sensibly depend on the converter topology and on the adopted power switch. In the present study, a comparative analysis of the transient response due to a nearby lightning strike (LS) is carried out for three PV systems, each equipped with a different converter, namely, boost, buck and buck–boost, based on either silicon carbide metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistors (SiC MOSFET) or insulated gate bipolar transistors controlled power switch devices, allowing in this way an analysis at different switching frequencies. The purpose of this paper is to present the results of the numerical analysis to help the design of suited protection systems. Design/methodology/approach Using a recently introduced three-dimensional semi-analytical method to simulate the electromagnetic transients caused in PV modules by nearby LSs, we investigate numerically the effect of a LS on the electronic circuits connecting the module to the alternate current (AC) power systems. This study adopts numerical simulations because experimental analyses are not easy to perform and does not grant a sufficient coverage of all statistically relevant aspects. The approach was validated in a previous paper against available experimental data. Findings It is found that the load voltage is not severely interested by the strike effects, thanks to the low pass filters present at the converter output, whereas a relatively high overvoltage develops between the negative pin of the inner circuitry and the “ground” voltage reference. The overcurrent present in the active switches is hardly comparable because of the different topologies and working frequencies; however, the highest overcurrent is observed in the buck converter topology, with SiC MOSFET technology, although it shows the fastest decay. Originality/value This research proposes, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, a comprehensive comparison of the indirect lighting strike effects on the converter connected to PV panels. A proper design of the lightning and surge protection system should take into account such aspects to reduce the risk of induced overvoltage and overcurrent transients.

Three-phase electric vehicle (EV) battery chargers are expected to not impact the unbalance of distribution networks; moreover, using active power factor correction topologies they are expected to behave like resistive loads not affecting the system harmonic distortion. In this study, unexpected unbalance characteristics of fundamental and harmonic currents of three-phase EV battery chargers are analysed by means of experimental tests performed on two EV cars of different technology. In order to quantify unbalance and harmonic distortion, proper comprehensive indices, in part developed in this study with specific reference to currents, are utilised. The unbalanced current absorbed even under ideal voltage balanced supply conditions by one of the two EV tested is shown and quantified constituting a real-life case study of endogenous unbalance. Then, the influence of voltage unbalance supply conditions on fundamental and harmonic currents is evaluated by means of a proposed testing procedure, obtaining case studies of exogenous unbalance. The experimental results obtained for the two EVs should be extended to a larger set of cars; anyway, they show the need, before moving forward to full grid EV connection, for utilities and for designers to improve the current standard certification process and the control performances of three-phase battery chargers.
