Abstract

The purpose of this investigation was to examine whether the Assembling Objects test (AO) should be added to the AFQT predictor composite. The investigation included a literature review and analysis of data from Army Classification project. Analyses included regressions with 20 different criteria, subgroup analyses, and bias analyses. Findings suggest that the Army should consider including the AO subtest in the AFQT predictor composite. Adding the AO subtest to the AFQT composite would likely increase the prediction of performance and job knowledge, while potentially decreasing the subgroup predictor differences between Hispanic and white subgroups. Although adding the AO subtest to the AFQT composite may increase the subgroup predictor differences of female and black subgroups relative to their respective majority comparison groups, results suggest that any additional subgroup differences would be borne out in performance differences, and that the revised AFQT composite would thus be fair and unbiased to minority groups. Future research should examine the degree to which these findings differ across job clusters, where cluster members are similar in terms of abilities needed to perform the work.

The UK accounting profession must address the expectation gap in auditing, that is, the gap between what is expected from an audit and what is delivered, in light of the Caparo Industries decision. There are three categories of criticism of audits that need to be addressed: the failure of a company without adequate warning, fraud, and error. A common practical factor causing the expectation gap is the lack of adequate management information, a situation that can be remedied by two steps: broadening the definition of accounting records and including a statement that budgets have been prepared for the following year and the company will continue operations.

The Channel Tunnel project will not break-even until 1998. It will cost a total of around 10.5 billion pounds sterling, compared to 4.8 billion pounds sterling originally estimated. Shareholders in Eurotunnel cannot expect to receive dividends until the 21st century. The project, which started in autumn-1987, is a feat of engineering. The 31-mile tunnel has required 15,000 overhead power line supports, 20,000 light fittings, 800,000 concrete segments, and 22,000 t of railway track.

Abstract

A man's experiences with a mentally-handicapped man he shared a train journey with made him face up to the difficulties that society has with the mentally handicapped. The man was an avid train spotter and would talk to anyone even if the best response was a hurried and embarrassed greeting but it was obvious that most people went to great lengths to avoid contact. The idea of the community caring for mentally-handicapped people is not working because prejudice towards the unknown means that the friendship being offered by mentally-handicapped people is rejected which in a strange way is society's loss.
