International audience; The advent of multi-PW laser facilities world-wide opens new opportunities for nuclear physics. With this perspective, we developed a neutron counter taking into account the specifics of a high-intensity laser environment. Using GEANT4 simulations and prototype testings, we report on the design of a modular neutron counter based on boron-10 enriched scintillators and a high-density polyethylene moderator. This detector has been calibrated using a plutonium-beryllium neutron source and commissioned during an actual neutron-producing laser experiment at the LULI2000 facility (France). An overall efficiency of 4.37(59)% has been demonstrated during calibration with a recovery time of a few hundred microseconds after laser-plasma interaction.

Neutrons produced by the conversion of proton accelerated by the 1PW arm of the Apollon facility have been detected, of which we will present preliminary results.

We present here the results of the commissioning of the "short focal length" area, which was performed with the first available laser beam of the Apollon laser facility (Saclay, France), i.e. using the presently available F2 beam at a nominal power of one petawatt. This beam delivered laser pulses of 10 J average on-target energy with pulse durations of 25 fs.

Proton beams driven by chirped pulse amplified lasers have multi-picosecond duration and can isochorically and volumetrically heat material samples, potentially providing an approach for creating samples of warm dense matter with conditions not present on Earth. Envisioned on a larger scale, they could heat fusion fuel to achieve ignition. We have shown in an experiment that a kilojoule-class, multi-picosecond short pulse laser is particularly effective for heating materials. The proton beam can be focussed via target design to achieve exceptionally high flux, important for the applications mentioned. The laser irradiated spherically curved diamond-like-carbon targets with intensity 4 × 1018 W/cm2, producing proton beams with 3 MeV slope temperature. A Cu witness foil was positioned behind the curved target, and the gap between was either empty or spanned with a structure. With a structured target, the total emission of Cu Kα fluorescence was increased 18 fold and the emission profile was consistent with a tightly focussed beam. Transverse proton radiography probed the target with ps order temporal and 10 μm spatial resolution, revealing the fast-acting focussing electric field. Complementary particle-in-cell simulations show how the structures funnel protons to the tight focus. The beam of protons and neutralizing electrons induce the bright Kα emission observed and heat the Cu to 100 eV.

A superbright X-ray source with a radiation temperature of ~1.2 keV making it possible to create a solid-state plasma whose kinetics is determined by the radiative processes has been implemented under the impact of a 170-TW pulse of the PEARL femtosecond laser facility on an aluminum target with submicron thickness. The diagnostics of the created plasma is performed by X-ray spectral methods using spectral transitions in hollow multicharged ions.

The design of ellipsoidal plasma mirrors (EPMs) for the PEARL laser facility is presented. The EPMs achieve a magnification of 0.32 in focal spot size, and the corresponding increase in focused intensity is expected to be about 8. Designing and implementing such focusing optics for short-pulse (

An original experimental stand is presented, aimed at studying the impact of high-energy protons, produced by the laser-plasma interaction at a petawatt power level, on biological objects. In the course of pilot experiments with the energy of laser-accelerated protons up to 25 MeV, the possibility is demonstrated of transferring doses up to 10 Gy to the object of study in a single shot with the magnetic separation of protons from parasitic X-ray radiation and fast electrons. The technique of irradiating the cell culture HeLa Kyoto and measuring the fraction of survived cells is developed. The ways of optimising the parameters of proton beams and the suitable methods of their separation with respect to energy and transporting to the studied living objects are discussed. The construction of the stand is intended for the improvement of laser technologies for hadron therapy of malignant neoplasms.

The SEPAGE spectrometer (Spectrometre Electrons Protons A Grandes Energies) was realized within the PETAL+ project funded by the French ANR (French National Agency for Research). This plasma diagnostic, installed on the LMJ-PETAL laser facility, is dedicated to the measurement of charged particle energy spectra generated by experiments using PETAL (PETawatt Aquitaine Laser). SEPAGE is inserted inside the 10-meter diameter LMJ experimental chamber with a SID (Diagnostic Insertion System) in order to be close enough to the target. It is composed of two Thomson Parabola measuring ion spectra and more particularly proton spectra ranging from 0.1 to 20 MeV and from 8 to 200 MeV for the low and high energy channels respectively. The electron spectrum is also measured with an energy range between 0.1 and 150 MeV. The front part of the diagnostic carries a film stack that can be placed as close as 100 mm from the target center chamber. This stack allows a spatial and spectral characterization of the entire proton beam. It can also be used to realize proton radiographies.

International audience; Power amplification and pulse compression of short-pulse laser beams by three-wave nonlinear processes in a plasma was proposed by Malkin, Shvets, and Fisch [Phys. Rev. Lett. 82, 4448 (1999)] as a potential path to exceed the limits of the highly successful technique of chirped pulse amplification [D. Strickland and G. Mourou, Opt. Commun. 56, 219 (1985)] developed three decades ago. The parametric processes considered, Raman and Brillouin scattering, are notoriously difficult to control and to predict theoretically because of the dependence on plasma properties and other nonlinear processes. Previous experiments of backward Raman and Brillouin amplifiers have fallen far short of the predictions of simulations and theory and achieved only a very small energy transfer. In this paper, laser-plasma amplification of subpicosecond pulses above the Joule level is demonstrated with a large energy transfer and a very high efficiency, up to 20%, a major milestone for this scheme to become a solution for the next generation of ultrahigh-intensity lasers. In addition, three-dimensional simulations of the amplification process quantitatively match the experimental results and demonstrate the ability of predictive simulations for the optimization of experiments. The global behavior of the amplification process is reproduced, including the evolution of the spatial profile of the amplified seed, the pulse length of the amplified seed, and the influence of parasitic spontaneous Raman and Brillouin scattering.

The use of plasmas provides a way to overcome the damage threshold of classical solid-state based optical materials which is the main limitation encountered in producing extreme power laser pulses. In particular one can use plasmas to directly amplify ultra-short laser pulses to very high intensities. Multi-dimensional kinetic simulations and first proof-of-principle experiments show the feasibility of using plasma instabilities involving ion waves, such as stimulated Brillouin backscattering, in a controlled way to transfer energy from a long pump pulse to a short seed pulse and thereby increase the intensity of the latter. Plasma parametric amplification, and the use of plasma mirrors for focusing, is part of the newly developping domain of plasma optics, which eventually will pave the way to Exawatt lasers.

Heating efficiently solid-density, or even compressed, matter has been a long-sought goal in order to allow investigation of the properties of such state of matter of interest for various domains, e.g. astrophysics. High-power lasers, pinches, and more recently Free-Electron-Lasers (FELs) have been used in this respect. Here we show that by using the high-power, high-contrast “PEARL” laser (Institute of Applied Physics-Russian Academy of Science, Nizhny Novgorod, Russia) delivering 7.5 J in a 60 fs laser pulse, such coupling can be efficiently obtained, resulting in heating of a slab of solid-density Al of 0.8 µm thickness at a temperature of 300 eV, and with minimal density gradients. The characterization of the target heating is achieved combining X-ray spectrometry and measurement of the protons accelerated from the Al slab. The measured heating conditions are consistent with a three-temperatures model that simulates resistive and collisional heating of the bulk induced by the hot electrons. Such effective laser energy deposition is achieved owing to the intrinsic high contrast of the laser which results from the Optical Parametric Chirped Pulse Amplification technology it is based on, allowing to attain high target temperatures in a very compact manner, e.g. in comparison with large-scale FEL facilities.

Radiochromic films (RCF) are commonly used in dosimetry for a wide range of radiation sources (electrons, protons, and photons) for medical, industrial, and scientific applications. They are multi-layered, which includes plastic substrate layers and sensitive layers that incorporate a radiation-sensitive dye. Quantitative dose can be retrieved by digitizing the film, provided that a prior calibration exists. Here, to calibrate the newly developed EBT3 and HDv2 RCFs from Gafchromic™, we used the Stanford Medical LINAC to deposit in the films various doses of 10 MeV photons, and by scanning the films using three independent EPSON Precision 2450 scanners, three independent EPSON V750 scanners, and two independent EPSON 11000XL scanners. The films were scanned in separate RGB channels, as well as in black and white, and film orientation was varied. We found that the green channel of the RGB scan and the grayscale channel are in fact quite consistent over the different models of the scanner, although this comes at the cost of a reduction in sensitivity (by a factor ∼2.5 compared to the red channel). To allow any user to extend the absolute calibration reported here to any other scanner, we furthermore provide a calibration curve of the EPSON 2450 scanner based on absolutely calibrated, commercially available, optical density filters.

We report a recent experiment where the first hard x-ray beam line, X-ray Pump Probe (XPP) instrument using the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory's Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) free electron laser, was used to heat thin foils to high energy densities ∼ 107 J/cm 3. An intense 9 keV, 60 fs (FWHM) duration beam with energy of 2 - 4 mJ at the XPP beam line was focused using beryllium lenses to an irradiance approaching 1016 Wcm -2. Targets of 0.5 - 3.5 μm thick foils of Ag and Cu were studied using a suite of diagnostics including Fourier Domain Interferometry, energy calorimetry and grating and crystal spectrometers. The experimental details and spectroscopic results from the campaign will be described. Preliminary results indicate that the target is heated relatively uniformly to a temperature lower than 20 eV. © 2011 SPIE.

Plasma amplification of low energy, a short (∼100–500 fs) laser pulse by an energetic long (∼10 ps) pulse via strong coupling Stimulated Brillouin Backscattering is investigated with an extensive analysis of one-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations. Parameters relevant to nowadays experimental conditions are investigated. The obtained seed pulse spectra are analyzed as a function of the interaction conditions such as plasma profile, pulses delay, and seed or pulse duration. The factors affecting the amount of energy transferred are determined, and the competition between Brillouin-based amplification and parasitic Raman backscattering is analyzed, leading to the optimization of the interaction conditions.

Ultra intense laser light propagation in a homogeneous overdense plasma was investigated using a plastic foam target filling a polyimide tube. Laser propagation into overdense plasma was measured via Doppler red shift of the reflected laser light from the moving plasma at 0.3-0.4 of speed of light. We also observed strongly collimated electron beam possibly caused by the magnetic field surrounding the plasma channel, and high energy X-rays emitted via synchrotron radiation by the oscillating electrons inside the channel. These features imply that UIL propagates inside the overdense plasma as predicted in PIC calculation, and are very important for direct irradiation scheme of fast ignition. Publisher PDF

International audience; Karate is practiced in France today in a great number of forms by about 230,000 practitioners affiliated with the French Federation of Karate and Associated Disciplines. There are multiple modalities according to which karatekas perceive their activity. A sociological survey commissioned by the French Federation and financed almost entirely by the Ministry of Health, Youth, Sports and Community Life was carried out between 2008 and 2010 in an attempt to highlight the typical profile of the practitioners. This article shows that the implementation of the sociological survey testifies to the Federation’s desire to take into account the expectations of its members, and thus, to assume a social role. However, in a context marked by the eagerness of the sports institutions to set their action within the high-level, performance model, this endeavor has met with serious difficulties, not least within the Federation itself, for which the survey seems to have served more as a pretext than a genuine piloting tool.; Le karaté est aujourd’hui pratiqué en France sous de très nombreuses formes, par près de 230 000 sportifs licenciés auprès de la Fédération Française de Karaté et Disciplines Associées. Les modalités selon lesquelles les karatékas perçoivent leur activité sont donc nécessairement multiples. Une enquête sociologique, commanditée par la Fédération Française et financée en quasi-totalité par le ministère de la Santé, de la Jeunesse, des Sports et de la Vie associative, a été réalisée entre 2008 et 2010 afin de mettre au jour des profils-type de pratiquants. Cet article montre que la réalisation de cette enquête sociologique témoigne de la volonté par la Fédération de prendre en compte les attentes de ses membres, et ainsi de jouer un rôle social. Mais dans un contexte d’inscription prioritaire des institutions sportives dans le modèle du haut niveau et de la performance, cette démarche se confronte à des difficultés majeures, y compris au sein même de la Fédération, pour qui cette enquête semble avoir davantage servi de prétexte que d’outil de pilotage réel.

Plasma-based laser amplification is considered as a possible way to overcome the technological limits of\ud present day laser systems and achieve exawatt laser pulses. Efficient amplification of a picosecond laser\ud pulse by stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) of a pump pulse in a plasma requires to reach the self-similar\ud regime of the strongly coupled (SC) SBS. In this Letter, we report on the first observation of the signatures\ud of the transition from linear to self-similar regimes of SC-SBS, so far only predicted by theory and\ud simulations. With a new fully head-on collision geometry, subpicosecond pulses are amplified by a factor\ud of 5 with energy transfers of few tens of mJ. We observe pulse shortening, frequency spectrum broadening,\ud and down-shifting for increasing gain, signatures of SC-SBS amplification entering the self-similar regime.\ud This is also confirmed by the power law dependence of the gain on the amplification length: doubling the\ud interaction length increases the gain by a factor 1.4. Pump backward Raman scattering (BRS) on SC-SBS\ud amplification has been measured for the first time, showing a strong decrease of the BRS amplitude and\ud frequency bandwidth when SBS seed amplification occurs.\ud

The results of numerical and experimental studies of high-intensity proton beam generation using a 2ω or 1ω Nd:glass laser beam irradiating a thin hydrogen-rich target are reported. The effect of the laser wavelength (λ), intensity (IL) and pulse duration as well as the target thickness, and the preplasma density gradient scale length on proton beam parameters, and the laser-protons energy conversion efficiency were examined by particle-in-cell simulations. Both the simulations and measurements, performed on the LULI 100 TW laser facility atILup to 2 × 1019W/cm2, prove that at theILλ2product fixed, the 2ω laser driver can produce proton beams of intensity, current density and energy fluence significantly higher than the ones which could be achieved using the 1ω driver. In particular, atILλ2~(0.5–1) × 1020Wcm−2µm2the 2ω picosecond driver makes it possible to generate multi-MeV proton beams of intensity and current density in excess of 1021W/cm2and 1014A/cm2, respectively, with the conversion efficiency above 10%.

The results of experimental and numerical studies of high-intensity proton beam generation driven by a short laser pulse of relativistic intensity are reported. In the experiment, a 350 fs laser pulse of 1.06 or 0.53 μm wavelength and intensity up to 2×1019 Wcm−2 irradiated a thin (0.6–2 μm) plastic (PS) or Au/PS (plastic covered by 0.2 μm Au front layer) target along the target normal. The effect of laser intensity, the target structure and the laser wavelength on the proton beam parameters and laser-protons energy conversion efficiency were examined. Both the measurements and one-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations showed that MeV proton beams of intensity ∼1018 Wcm−2 and current density ∼1012 Acm−2 at the source can be produced when the laser intensity-wavelength squared product I Lλ2 is ∼1019 Wcm−2 μm2 and the laser-target interaction conditions approach the skin-layer ponderomotive acceleration (SLPA) requirements. The simulations also proved that at I Lλ2≥slant 5×1019 Wcm−2 μm2 and λ≤slant 0.53...

We have analyzed the acceleration of laser-generated protons, produced at the rear surface of flat-cone targets irradiated by an ultra-intense (I∼5×1019 W/cm2) short (400 fs) laser pulse. We used different target sizes and shapes in order to find the optimum target layout. We find that for targets with a too narrow cone structure, the production of the hot electrons, driving the proton acceleration, is located prior to the accelerating rear surface of the target, resulting in a reduced maximum proton energy.

The acceleration of high-energy ion beams following the interaction of short (t 1018 W cm-2 μm2) laser pulses with solid targets is a field of research currently attracting high interest in the scientific community, due to some of the unique properties of these ion sources, promising routes toward the optimization of their energy content, and a number of possible, innovative applications in the scientific, technological and medical areas. Work on the characterization and development of these sources has progressed enormously over the past few years, thanks to the contribution of many groups worldwide. This paper will report some recent results, obtained in experiments carried out at the RAL and LULI laboratories, in which we investigated the ion acceleration mechanism, developed a technique to control the ion beam divergence and energy spectrum, and applied a proton radiography technique to investigate electric and magnetic field production following laser-matter interaction.

This paper reviews recent experimental activity in the area of optimization, control, and application of laser-accelerated proton beams, carried out at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory and the Laboratoire pour lpsilaUtilisation des Lasers Intenses 100 TW facility in France. In particular, experiments have investigated the role of the scale length at the rear of the plasma in reducing target-normal-sheath-acceleration acceleration efficiency. Results match with recent theoretical predictions and provide information in view of the feasibility of proton fast-ignition applications. Experiments aiming to control the divergence of the proton beams have investigated the use of a laser-triggered microlens, which employs laser-driven transient electric fields in cylindrical geometry, enabling to focus the emitted protons and select monochromatic beamlets out of the broad-spectrum beam. This approach could be advantageous in view of a variety of applications. The use of laser-driven protons as a particle probe for transient field detection has been developed and applied to a number of experimental conditions. Recent work in this area has focused on the detection of large-scale self-generated magnetic fields in laser-produced plasmas and the investigation of fields associated to the propagation of relativistic electron both on the surface and in the bulk of targets irradiated by high-power laser pulses.

We present a novel technique for focusing and energy selection of high-current, MeV proton/ion beams. This method employs a hollow micro-cylinder that is irradiated at the outer wall by a high intensity, ultra-short laser pulse. The relativistic electrons produced are injected through the cylinder's wall, spread evenly on the inner wall surface of the cylinder, and initiate a hot plasma expansion. A transient radial electric field (107–1010 V/m) is associated with the expansion. The transient electrostatic field induces the focusing and the selection of a narrow band component out of the broadband poly-energetic energy spectrum of the protons generated from a separate laser irradiated thin foil target that are directed axially through the cylinder. The energy selection is tunable by changing the timing of the two laser pulses. Computer simulations carried out for similar parameters as used in the experiments explain the working of the micro-lens.

The production of neutron beams having short temporal duration is studied using ultraintense laser pulses. Laser-accelerated protons are spectrally filtered using a laser-triggered microlens to produce a short duration neutron pulse via nuclear reactions induced in a converter material (LiF). This produces a similar to 3 ns duration neutron pulse with 10(4) n/MeV/sr/shot at 0.56 m from the laser-irradiated proton source. The large spatial separation between the neutron production and the proton source allows for shielding from the copious and undesirable radiation resulting from the laser-plasma interaction. This neutron pulse compares favorably to the duration of conventional accelerator sources and should scale up with, present and future, higher energy laser facilities to produce brighter and shorter neutron beams for ultrafast probing of dense materials.

Intense lasers of femtosecond pulse duration are known to be drivers for intense electron and ion beams. Those beams, generated at laser intensities exceeding 10 19 W/cm 2 , are known to have unique characteristics and are therefore a subject of intense research world wide. Recently, the parameters of laser driven ion beams have been measured using new methods and it has been demonstrated, that beam patterns on a nanometer scale can be generated and propagated over long distances. We report on recent results and prospects for future application with special respect to further laser developments.

One of the main issues of the fast ignitor scheme is the role of fast electron transport in the solid fuel heating. Recent experiments used a new target scheme based on the use of cone to guide the PW laser and enhance the electron production. In this context it is fundamental to understand the physics underlying this new target scheme. We report here recent and preliminary results of ultra-intense laser pulse interaction with three layer targets in presence of the cone or without. Experiments have been performed at LULI with the 100TW laser facility, at intensities up to 3 10 19 W/cm 2 . Several diagnostics have been implemented (2D Kx imaging, Kα spectroscopy and rear side imaging, protons emission) to quantify the cone effect.

We present a technique for simultaneous focusing and energy selection of high-current, mega–electron volt proton beams with the use of radial, transient electric fields (10 7 to 10 10 volts per meter) triggered on the inner walls of a hollow microcylinder by an intense subpicosecond laser pulse. Because of the transient nature of the focusing fields, the proposed method allows selection of a desired range out of the spectrum of the polyenergetic proton beam. This technique addresses current drawbacks of laser-accelerated proton beams, such as their broad spectrum and divergence at the source.

We present the results of some recent experiments performed at the LULI laboratory using the 100 TW laser facility concerning the study of the propagation of fast electrons in gas and solid targets. Novel diagnostics have been implemented including chirped shadowgraphy and proton radiography. Proton radiography images did show the presence of very strong fields in the gas probably produced by charge separation. In turn these imply a slowing down of the fast electron cloud as it penetrates in the gas and a strong inhibition of propagation. Indeed chirped shadowgraphy images show a strong reduction in time of the velocity of the electron cloud from the initial value, which is of the order of a fraction of c. We also performed some preliminary experiments with cone targets in order to verify the guiding effect and fast electron propagation in presence of the cone. Finally we compared results obtained by changing the target size.Here we only give a first presentation and preliminary analysis of data, which will be addressed in detail in a following paper.

This paper reports the results of a series of experiments on laser generated ions using the 100 TW laser at the ‘Laboratiore pour l’Utilisation des Lasers Intenses (LULI)’ at the Ecole Polythechnique in Palaiseau, France, and the 30 TW ‘Trident’ facility at Los Alamos National Laboratories in New Mexico, USA. It shows the importance of the ‘Target Normal Sheath Acceleration’ process (TNSA) for short pulse laser generated ion beams and its connection to the influence of target properties on the ion beam quality. It is shown that TNSA-generated protons form an ion beam with superior beam quality, following versatile spatial beam shaping approaches. These insights are set into perspective for a fast ignitor scenario based on short pulse laser generated protons.

Dynamic wave front correction is applied before each shot on a 100 TW, 30 J/300 fs high power laser facility using an adaptive optics system. This system allows one to increase the repetition rate of high-energy lasers while maintaining excellent and constant beam focusability with a Strehl ratio >0.75 despite the amplifiers not being in thermal equilibrium. Best results in terms of highest Strehl ratio and intensities are obtained when locking the system on wave front sensing after pulse recompression.

A mechanism that has gained great attention in the field of laser-ion acceleration due to remarkable properties of the accelerated beam is laser acceleration of protons from the rear surface of solid targets. It is shown that these protons are capable of transporting structure information from the rear surface of the target into the detector, which can be used to measure essential properties of the flow like an upper limit of the lateral beam emittance and the source area of the laser accelerated protons for a particular energy. In this Letter the essential mechanism responsible for the generation of images of surface structures by laser-accelerated protons is addressed and used to explain the experiment is described in the Letter.

Laser–plasma interaction (LPI) physics is one the major issues for the realization of inertial fusion. Parametric instabilities may be driven by the incident laser beams during their propagation in the underdense plasma surrounding the fusion capsule. These instabilities may result in various effects detrimental to a good energy transfer from the laser beams to the target: the backscattering of the incident beams, the generation of energetic electrons which might preheat the fusion fuel, and the spoiling of the laser beam alignment. The control of the linear growth of these instabilities, together with the understanding of their nonlinear saturation mechanisms are therefore of fundamental importance for laser fusion. During the past few years, a series of new concepts have emerged, deeply modifying our approach to LPI physics. In particular, LPI experiments are now carried out with laser beams which are optically smoothed by means of random phase plates. Such beams are characterized inside the plasma by randomly distributed intensity maxima. Filamentation instabilities may locally increase the laser intensity maxima and deplete the electron density, leading to an intricate coupling between various nonlinear processes. One of the most striking features of this intricate coupling is the resulting ability of the plasma to induce additional temporal and spatial incoherence to the laser beams during their propagation. The increased incoherence may in turn reduce the level of backscattering instabilities.

Significantly collimated fast electron beam with a divergence angle 10° (FWHM) is observed when an ultra-intense laser pulse (I = 1014 W/cm2, 300 fs) irradiates a uniform critical density plasma. The uniform plasma is created through the ionization of an ultra-low density (5 mg/c.c.) plastic foam by X-ray burst from the interaction of intense laser (I = 1014 W/cm2, 600 ps) with a thin Cu foil. 2D Particle-In-Cell (PIC) simulation well reproduces the collimated electron beam with a strong magnetic field in the region of the laser pulse propagation. To understand the physical mechanism of the collimation, we calculate energetic electron motion in the magnetic field obtained from the 2D PIC simulation. As the results, the strong magnetic field (300 MG) collimates electrons with energy over a few MeV. This collimation mechanism may attract attention in many applications such as electron acceleration, electron microscope and fast ignition of laser fusion. Publisher PDF

A novel method for characterising the full spectrum of deuteron ions emitted by laser driven multi-species ion sources is discussed. The procedure is based on using differential filtering over the detector of a Thompson parabola ion spectrometer, which enables discrimination of deuterium ions from heavier ion species with the same charge-to-mass ratio (such as C6+, O8+, etc.). Commonly used Fuji Image plates were used as detectors in the spectrometer, whose absolute response to deuterium ions over a wide range of energies was calibrated by using slotted CR-39 nuclear track detectors. International audience; Since the inception of the laser, there has been a constant push toward increasing the laser peak intensity, as this has lead to opening the exploration of new territories, and the production of compact sources of particles and radiation with unprecedented characteristics. However, increasing the peak laser intensity is usually performed by enhancing the produced laser properties, either by lowering its duration or increasing its energy, which involves a great level of complexity for the laser chain, or comes at great cost. Focusing tightly is another possibility to increase the laser intensity, but this comes at the risk of damaging the optics with target debris, as it requires their placement in close proximity to the interaction region. Plasma devices are an attractive, compact alternative to tightly focus extreme light pulses and further increase the final laser intensity.

Suitable instrumentation for laser-accelerated proton (ion) beams is critical for development of integrated, laser-driven ion accelerator systems. Instrumentation aimed at beam diagnostics and control must be applied to the driving laser pulse, the laser-plasma that forms at the target and the emergent proton (ion) bunch in a correlated way to develop these novel accelerators. This report is a brief overview of established diagnostic techniques and new developments based on material presented at the first workshop on 'Instrumentation for Diagnostics and Control of Laser-accelerated Proton (Ion) Beams' in Abingdon, UK. It includes radiochromic film (RCF), image plates (IP), micro-channel plates (MCP), Thomson spectrometers, prompt inline scintillators, time and space-resolved interferometry (TASRI) and nuclear activation schemes. A double foil assembly is shown to be effective in tailoring the maximum energy produced by a laser-accelerated proton beam. The measurements compare favorably with adiabatic expansion simulations, and particle-in-cell simulations. The arrangement proposed here offers for some applications a simple and passive way to utilize simultaneously highest irradiance lasers that have best laser-to-ion conversion efficiency while avoiding the production of undesired high-energy ions.

A model for stimulated Brillouin (SBS) and Raman (SRS) backscattering of a spatially smoothed laser beam interacting with a collisional, inhomogeneous, expanding plasma is presented. It is based on the independent hot spots description [H. A. Rose and D. F. DuBois, Phys. Rev. Lett. 72, 2883 (1994)], in which the overall plasma reflectivity is assumed to be a sum of the individual speckle reflectivities. Self-focusing is taken into account in the computation of the speckle intensity profile and reflectivities. Two additions have been made to previous similar theories: (i) the thermal effects are retained along with the ponderomotive force for what concerns speckle self-focusing, and (ii) SRS (convective and absolute) is accounted for in calculations of the speckle reflectivity. The model is benchmarked against recent laser–plasma experiments at Laboratoire pour l’Utilisation des Lasers Intenses, at Ecole Polytechnique, France, with well-characterized interaction conditions. A good agreement is found between the experimental SBS levels and the model calculations using the measured plasma parameters. This agreement applies for two types of beam smoothing techniques, random phase plates, and polarization smoothing, various plasma densities, and laser energies. Self-focusing itself, and thermal effects in it, play both a fundamental role in defining the level of plasma backscattering. The absolute Raman instability in speckles dominates the SRS response. The model predictions for the SRS reflectivity are less satisfactory, although they demonstrate the same trends as the experimental data. It follows from model calculations and experimental data that the polarization smoothing technique provides an efficient method of control of parametric instabilities allowing a reduction of several times in the level of SBS and SRS reflectivities.

Experiments have been conducted at the LULI (Laboratoire pour l’Utilisation des Lasers Intenses) multibeam laser facility to study in detail stimulated Brillouin (SBS) and Raman (SRS) scattering from an intense (mean average intensity up to 1014 W/cm2) long (600 ps full width at half-maximum) laser beam interacting with thin exploded plastic foils. The plasmas are well characterized and the vacuum laser intensity distribution is well known due to using either random phase plates or polarization smoothing. Direct and simultaneous Thomson scattering measurements of the associated plasma waves allow us to obtain detailed information about the SBS and SRS temporal evolution and spatial localization. These data are being used to benchmark a statistical model of SBS and SRS from self-focused speckles. The results of this comparison will be presented in a companion paper. In this article, we present how ion acoustic waves can be unambiguously identified and can be used to definitely demonstrate the existence of the Langmuir decay instability (LDI) of electron plasma waves associated with stimulated Raman scattering. This observation is very important in the context of inertial confinement fusion because the LDI is a mechanism that may influence the stimulated Raman scattering saturation and growth. The experimental identification of those waves relies on Thomson scattering of a short wavelength probe beam. The Thomson scattered light was analyzed by two sets of spectrometer and streak camera providing information on the density fluctuations associated with the electron plasma waves and ion acoustic waves with temporal and spectral resolutions. Selection of a narrow range of angles (4° of aperture) inside the probe and scattered light apertures provided necessary resolution in wave vector. The method used for the design of the Thomson scattering diagnostic is described as well as the technique used to clearly identify the observed ion acoustic waves as one of the Langmuir decay instability products.

Of vital importance for Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) are the understanding and control of the nonlinear processes which can occur during the propagation of the laser pulses through the underdense plasma surrounding the fusion capsule. The control of parametric instabilities has been studied experimentally, using the LULI six-beam laser facility, and also theoretically and numerically. New results based on the direct observation of plasma waves with Thomson scattering of a short wavelength probe beam have revealed the occurence of the Langmuir decay instability. This secondary instability may play an imporant role in the saturation of stimulated Raman scattering. Another mechanism for reducing the growth of the scattering instabilities is the so-called `plasma-induced incoherence'. Namely, recent theoretical studies have shown that the propagation of laser beams through the underdense plasma can increase their spatial and temporal incoherence. This plasma-induced beam smoothing can reduce the levels of parametric instabilities. One signature of this process is a large increase of the spectral width of the laser light after propagation through the plasma. Comparison of the experimental results with numerical simulations shows an excellent agreement between the observed and calculated time-resolved spectra of the transmitted laser light at various laser intensities.

Significant reductions of stimulated Brillouin (SBS) and Raman (SRS) scattering are measured by adding polarization smoothing (PS) to a random phase plate smoothed beam. The associated plasma waves, as measured by Thomson scattering, are spatially and temporally modified and reveal that the interplay between SBS and SRS has to be taken into account to understand the effect of the smoothing. The results also support the numerical simulations [S. Hueller et al., Phys. Plasmas 5, 2706 (1998); R. Berger et al., Phys. Plasmas 6, 1043 (1999)] predicting a reduction of self-focusing with PS, resulting in a decrease of the maximum laser intensity and consequently of SBS and SRS gains. To test the validity of kinetics for laser-produced plasmas, one would like to measure the X-ray spectrum emitted from a plasma volume whose characteristics are determined by diagnostics that do not rely on interpreting the X-ray spectrum itself. An experimental test bed has been developed at the Janus laser at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory to simultaneously characterize the electron temperature, the electron density and the X-ray emission from laser-irradiated aluminum dot targets. Thomson scattering, interferometry and pinhole imaging are implemented to achieve this. Further, the X-ray spectrum from 1–2 keV is spatially integrated and is obtained using a flat crystal (PET) and an X-ray streak camera for time resolution. Spectra have been calculated using the HULLAC and FLY atomic physics codes which use the measured density and temperature as input, and DCA which calculates X-ray spectra from the 2-D expanding plasma calculated by a hydrodynamics code. Comparisons of the models with the data will be discussed and future directions will be indicated.

We have compared the acceleration of high-energy ions from the rear-surface of thin foils for various contrast conditions of the ultra-intense laser pulse irradiating the targets. The experiments were performed using the LULI 100 TW facility. We used Al targets of variable thicknesses and the laser pulse contrast ratio ahead of the main pulse was varied using either a fast Pockels cell or a single or double plasma mirror. The latter was installed at an intermediate field position, in between the focusing optics and the target, so that its effect was optimized. By improving with these two methods the laser pulse contrast, we have observed that we could significantly reduce the thickness of the target used for proton acceleration and at the same time increase both the cut-off energy of the accelerated protons and the energy conversion efficiency of the process.
