Background Clinicians always experience dilemmas while choosing the type of pit and fissure sealant and the method of enamel preparation before the application of sealant. This study was accomplished using the unfilled and filled types of resin sealant deploying three different techniques of enamel preparation. Aim and objective To do a comparative analysis of unfilled and filled sealants by deploying three techniques of enamel preparation. Materials and methods The total number of 60 extracted teeth were divided into 3 groups, each containing 20 samples. Conventional acid etching of enamel was labeled as (group I), laser application as (group II), and fissurotomy bur (group III). The samples of group I were prepared by conventional acid etching, the group II was subjected to Er:YAG lasing, while in group III fissurotomy followed by acid etching was done. The sealant placement was done using split tooth design in all the samples. Dye penetration using 5% methylene blue was used for microleakage assessment. Results The highest microleakage was found with Gr. II whereas Gr. I exhibited the least microleakage. No statistical difference was observed between the unfilled and filled sealant (p = 0.652). Conclusion Conventional acid etching alone or with fissurotomy weighed up appropriate option regardless of the type of sealant material used. They all received green thermal laser photocoagulation treatment to the cornea as an adjunctive to medical treatment.Results: Forty-eight women and 102 men were included in this study with a mean age of 46.2 ± 7.7 years. Common risk factors associated with IK included trauma by material of plant origin and contact lens wear. The mean duration of healing was 2.87 ± 0.7 weeks. A single session of green thermal laser application was adequate in 138 IK cases (92%), while 12 cases (8%) required an additional session a week later. Supplementary amniotic membrane transplantation (AMT) was required in 26 cases (17.3%). Two patients (1.3%) required tectonic keratoplasty for corneal perforation. The final corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) was counting fingers (CF) or better in 78 patients (52%). No decrease of CDVA was reported throughout the study.Conclusion: Green thermal laser is a safe and effective adjunctive therapy for the treatment of resistant infectious keratitis.Keywords: laser, resistant keratitis, infectious keratitis, cornea

This Randomized clinical trial was conducted to assess the value of using LLLT (Low level Laser Therapy) plus Splint therapy in comparison with using splint therapy alone for treatment of TMDs. Subject & methods. Twenty-six patients with TMDs were divided into 2 equal groups: Group I was the trial group where 5 LLLT sessions were done for all patients on a period of 5 weeks in conjunction with splint therapy, group II as a control group (splint therapy only). pain level, maximum mouth opening, lateral excursions, clicking sounds & disc position were all recorded and analyzed statistically. Results. There was a non-statistically significant difference after 6 Months concerning pain level, maximum mouth opening, lateral excursions & disc position However there were improvement regarding pain level initially for the trial group. Conclusion. LLLT proved to be helpful and encouraging effect in alleviating pain during acute phase of treatment of TMDs, however it has no significant effect on range of motion or disc position.

Introduction: Currently, a laser is a popular technology in urological surgeries. The important laserrelated issue is the time when a surgeon reaches an acceptable level of safety and efficacy using laser technology. Methods: In this review, we aimed to assess the learning curves of three types of surgeries in urology, including photoselective vaporization of the prostate (PVP), holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP) and retrograde intra-renal surgeries (RIRSs). Here, we searched Medline, Web of Science, Google Scholar, EMBASE, and Scopus for such keywords as Urology, laser, laser vaporization, prostate, nephrolithiasis, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), and learning curve. Results: We evaluated 14 studies about PVP, 17 about RIRS, and 29 studies about HoLEP. Also, we separately discussed the learning curves of these three kinds of surgeries in detail. Conclusion: All the urologists, even expert surgeons, should attend a formal training course and have a skilled tutor present at their first cases.

Introduction: Plaque induced periodontitis is the second most common oral disease worldwide after dental caries. Documents from animal experiments proved that NSAIDs can reduce the inflammation and the rate of resorption of alveolar bone thus, stabilize the periodontal condition. In the last 10 years, diode laser also has been highly recommended as a treatment modality for periodontal inflammatory diseases due to its anti-inflammatory effect, ability to accelerate the healing process and its pain reduction ability. Materials and Methods: 84 albino rats were divided into 4 groups. Group I is the negative control group which did not subjected to any procedure, group II is the positive control group which is subjected to ligature induced periodontitis but did not take any treatment, group III is the diode laser group which is subjected to ligature induced periodontitis and treated by diode laser irradiation after removal of the ligature and group IV is the ibuprofen group which is subjected to ligature induced periodontitis and treated by ibuprofen syrup for 4 days after removal of the ligature. Results: inflammatory cell count was measured in all specimens stained by H&E and area fraction was measured in all specimens stained by MMP-1 immuno histochemical marker. Total amount of inflammatory cells and MMP-1 decreased by time with a significant difference between treatment groups and positive control group. Conclusion: Diode laser irradiation showed greater and faster reduction in inflammation than ibuprofen.

Background Ablative fractional laser generates a regulated skin damage, which secondarily improves skin aging. Aims The main objective of the present study was to figure out if the adverse effects induced by laser and the skin recovery could improve with the application of a cosmetic product based on the secretion of Cryptomphalus aspersa (SCA). Patients/Methods A prospective double‐blind controlled study with vehicle in 10 patients with skin aging. The patients received one session of fractional ablative CO2 laser, and the formulation with SCA 40% was applied immediately and maintained throughout the 21‐day duration of the study. The active treatment (SCA) was applied to one hemifacial area and vehicle to the other, and the patient acting was her own control. Clinical evaluations, dermoscopy, photography, and other parameters like cutaneous hydration, elasticity, and wrinkles were evaluated. In addition, the severity of the adverse effects was evaluated. Results Significant greater decrease in the density of microcolumns produced by laser was detected on the active‐treated side, indicating greater and faster postprocedure recovery compared to the vehicle‐treated side. In addition, side effects were reduced and some antiaging effects were more apparent on the side treated with SCA 40%. Conclusion SCA 40% applied immediately after ablative laser, and during the next days, it can accelerate laser‐induced damage regeneration. In addition, SCA improves the cosmetic outcome after laser application.

Objective. The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate the effectiveness of laser application in temporomandibular joint disorder. Methods. PubMed, SCOPUS, Science Direct, Web of Science, and Google Scholar electronic databases were searched systematically with restricting the languages to only English and year (January 2001 to March 2020), and studies were selected based on the inclusion criteria. Study quality and publication bias were assessed by using the Robvis, a software package of R statistical software. Results. This systematic review included 32 studies (1172 patients) based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Most of the studies reported significant reduction of pain by the use of the laser during TMD treatment. Two-thirds of the study (78.13%) found a better outcome comparing with conventional one. According to Robvis, 84.4% of the studies were high methodological studies with low risk of bias. Conclusion. TMD patients suffer with continuous pain for long time even after conventional treatment. Laser therapy shows a promising outcome of pain reduction for TMD patients. Therefore, laser therapy can be recommended for the TMD patients’ better outcome. Objective: The present study aimed to evaluate the association between pain during intracanal diode laser irradiation in mandibular molar teeth have symptomatic apical periodontitis and factors such as demographic and preoperative factors. Methods: Fourteen patients who have mandibular molar teeth have symptomatic apical periodontitis were enrolled in this clinical study. All endodontic treatments were performed in one-visit. After final irrigation, root canals were irradiated using a 970 ± 15 nm diode laser with a 14 W maximum power. Pain during laser application, postoperative pain levels at day 1, 3, 5, 7 and 30 and postoperative percussion tenderness levels at day 7 on the visual analog scale were marked. Multiple lineer regression was used for constructing a predictive model for intraoperative pain (P = 0.05). Results: 11 (78 %) patients reported pain during intracanal diode laser application. Age, gender, tooth type (first molar or second molar), side of the tooth (left or right), preoperative palpation, pulp status, preoperative percussion and preoperative spontaneous pain did not predict intraoperative pain during intracanal diode laser application (F(8, 5) = 2.332, p > .05). Conclusion: Within the limitations of the present clinical trial, none of the factors predict intraoperative pain during intracanal diode laser application

Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of using full thickness mucoperiosteal flap (FTMPF) elevation only versus low level laser therapy (LLLT) on acceleration of orthodontic tooth movement. Material and Methods: This study was a split mouth design study included 32 side according to sample size calculation. Those sides were divided into 2 groups. Group 1divided into (group 1a: 8 sides with FTMPF, group 1b:8 sides control). Group 2 (group 2 a: 8 sides with LLLT, group 2b: 8 sides control). Extraction of the first maxillary premolars followed by canine retraction in the extraction space with maximum anchorage were indicated. FTMPF was elevated from the mesial interdental papilla of maxillary canine to the mesial interdental papilla of second maxillary premolar. LLLT was applied at the 3,7,14,28.56 days of retraction. During retraction study model for all patients were taken at 2nd, 6th, 14th,16th weeks and at the end of retraction (I1,I2,I3,I4,I5 or overall interval). 3D laser scanning and digital superimposition was done to measure the rate of canine retraction and anchorage loss. Results: Statistical analysis showed a significant difference in the distance moved by maxillary canine and weekly rate of retraction between the FTMPF and its control in I1, I2 and I5 and in I2, I3 and I5 LLLT and its control. The total retraction time was significantly decreased in both FTMPF and LLLT in comparison to control. Conclusions: FTMPF could accelerate orthodontic tooth movement with 25%, while LLLT could achieve 20% decrease with no significant difference between both techniques.

Using light sources in phototherapy has presented promising results regarding several types of facial and body skin affections for centuries. The neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (ND:YAG) 1064 nm laser has become a standard treatment in dermatology for dermatological disturbances related to the pilous follicle and the structures surrounding it. Despite the reports of its clinical benefits, few scientific studies show its actual safety and efficacy. To substantiate the effects, benefits, and safety of applying an ND:YAG 1064 laser in the epilation process during esthetic treatment, a systematic review was carried out between October 2018 and January 2019, on studies published in the last 20 years. Randomized clinical trials in humans were considered that evaluated the efficacy, safety, and benefits of ND:YAG laser application at 1064 nm wavelengths for hair removal. A total of 198 articles were identified; 58 articles remained after their titles and abstracts were read; and 21 articles were selected after the removal of duplicates. After the integral reading, 13 of these articles were included in the systematic review (734 patients). The ND:YAG 1064 nm laser presents safety and promising, beneficial effects in epilation. However, further scientific studies with better methodologic quality are necessary to better standardize ND:YAG laser therapy and clarify its parameters for photoepilation.

Introduction: The aim of this study was to analyze the influence of residents’ participation in flexible ureteroscopy (fURS) on intra- and postoperative outcomes. Materials and Methods: Intra- and postoperative parameters were compared in a retrospective monocentric setting between 3 groups: “resident group” (47 cases) for surgeries performed by experienced residents alone, “consultant group” (245 cases) for surgeries performed by consultants alone, “resident plus consultant group” (124 cases) for training surgeries between September 2013 and June 2017. Results: Patients operated by residents alone had a significantly smaller median kidney stone diameter (5.0 vs. 7.0 mm for “consultant group” and 6.0 mm for “resident plus consultant group,” p = 0.011), shorter operating time (median 47.0 vs. 63.0 and 77.0 min, p < 0.001) and fluoroscopy time (median 39.0 vs. 69.5 and 89.0 s, p < 0.001), as well as shorter postoperative hospital stay (p = 0.013). The laser application rate was the smallest in the “resident group” (10.64 vs. 31.43 and 29.84%, p = 0.009). Univariate analysis revealed no relevant differences regarding flexible ureteroscope defect rate, postoperative stone-free rate, or ≥2 Clavien-Dindo classification complications between the groups (p > 0.05). Conclusion: A proper case selection of less complicated cases, especially without laser application, could balance the experience deficit of the residents. fURS can be incorporated as a part of residents’ training without an impact on fURS device defect rate or clinical outcomes.

To study the intraocular pressure (IOP) variation during vacuum and docking of femtosecond laser application.Department for Ophthalmology, Kepler University Hospital, Johannes Kepler University Linz, Austria.Experimental study.Intracameral intraocular pressure (IOP) was monitored in 30 porcine ex vivo models using a dual femtosecond laser platform (VICTUS). Five different baseline IOP levels (10 to 30 mm Hg) were assessed during fluid-filled (liquid) docking, full-contact (applanating) docking, and vacuum application without docking.Raising the baseline intracameral IOP from 10 to 30 mm Hg increased the IOP from 27.55 mm Hg ± 5.93 (SD) to 56.85 ± 6.10 mm Hg in the fluid-filled docking group, and from 60.91 ± 8.41 mm Hg to 90.11 ± 6.64 mm Hg in the full-contact docking group. The full-contact docking procedure per se (excluding vacuum effect) increased the IOP by 61.7% (+36.58 ± 5.84 mm Hg). In contrast, fluid-filled docking (excluding vacuum effect) raised the IOP by only 3.1% (+0.72 ± 2.71 mm Hg). Each 5 mm Hg reduction of baseline IOP resulted in a mean IOP reduction of 7.33 ± 3.05 mm Hg in the fluid-filled group, and 7.30 ± 6.88 mm Hg in the full-contact docking group (P .001). Decreasing baseline intracameral IOP from 15 to 10 mm Hg resulted in the highest IOP reduction between all subgroups (P .01).Baseline IOP, docking procedures, and vacuum influenced IOP during femtosecond laser application in a synergistic manner. Lowering the baseline intracameral IOP resulted in a significantly lower IOP during fluid-filled docking for cataract surgery and full-contact docking for refractive surgery. Full-contact (applanating) docking resulted in a significantly higher IOP elevation compared with similar IOP values found during fluid-filled (liquid) docking and the application of the suction ring alone without docking.

Introduction:In sports medicine, laser application has been well-established for the recovery of muscles. The mechanisms by which benefits of this kind of therapy can be studied is molecular research approach. Protein-protein interaction network analysis as one of the important complementary studies of proteomics can accelerate this goal by the identification of novel contributing markers.Methods:By the use of Cytoscape V3.7.1 and its applications, a network of differential expressed proteins (DEPs) from IR laser treatment samples were constructed and analyzed. Six hub-bottlenecks were determined, 4 of which were from differentially expressed proteins.Results:ClueGO discovered 4 biological processes related to these hub-bottlenecks that their function could alter due to IR laser therapy.Conclusion:In fact, by the expression changes of hub-bottlenecks including the up-regulation of HSP90s, one of the prominent biological processes in muscle recovery could be activated. This process is called nitric oxide synthase (NOS) activation that could be proposed as one of the underlying mechanisms of IR laser treatments in muscle recovery.

To compare the anterior and posterior segment complications of diode (810 nm) laser photocoagulation (LPC) and Nd:YAG (532 nm green) LPC in the treatment of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). The 84 eyes of 43 patients treated with diode LPC (group 1) and 58 eyes of 31 patients treated with Nd:YAG LPC (group 2) for ROP in our clinic were enrolled in the study. Medical records of all patients were investigated retrospectively. The patients in each group were examined in terms of birth weights, gestational weeks, stage of retinopathy, number of lasers pots, laser parameters, and anterior and posterior complications of LPC. The mean birth weeks of group 1 patients were postmenstrual 27.7 ± 2.5 (23–33), while the mean birth weights were 1006.0 ± 334.5 (540–1980) grams. The mean birth weeks of group 2 patients were postmenstrual 27.4 ± 2.6 (23–33), while the mean birth weights were 1073.8 ± 329.2 (480–1720) grams. The mean numbers of laser spots were 1036.0 ± 515.2 (430–2410) in group 1 per eye, while the mean numbers of laser spots were 1085.4 ± 526.0 (445–2530) in group 2 per eye (p ≥ 0.05). Additional laser application was performed in four eyes (4.8%) in group 1 and four eyes (6.9%) in group 2. Four eyes (4.8%) treated with diode LPC and one eye (1.7%) treated with Nd:YAG laser developed retinal detachment. Two eyes of a patient (3.4%) applied Nd:YAG LPC developed cataract. Cataract may develop when Nd:YAG laser is used; however, posterior segment complications may be more likely to appear with the use of diode laser in these cases.

The objective of this study was to describe a predictable and easy-to-use model that can create standardized burn wounds. A 450-nm 1000-mW blue beam laser pointer was used to create burn wounds on the dorsal skin of 24 Sprague Dawley rats. Twelve distinct areas of dorsal skin were pulsed for 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 19, 21, and 23 seconds with the help of a punched plastic card template. Three groups of 8 animals were killed immediately after on the third day and on the seventh day of the procedure and tissue samples were taken for histological evaluation and measurements. A second-degree burn was obtained in all animals with 3 and 5 seconds of laser application on the same day, third day, and seventh day measurements. Seven seconds of application resulted in a burn depth of 84.87% of dermis on the application day which deepened to involve the whole dermal layer on the third and seventh day. Nine seconds and longer application times resulted in third-degree burn wounds. Burn induction with blue beam laser pointer is an easy-to-use, predictable and safe model to create a standardized burn wound of desired thickness. © 2019 American Burn Association 2019. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of using Er,Cr:YSGG laser in an adjunct to scaling and root planing (SRP + Er,Cr:YSGG) in periodontal maintenance patients with residual periodontal pockets. This study is a double-blind randomized controlled clinical trial and a split-mouth design. Fifteen periodontal maintenance patients with two single-rooted teeth with probing depth (PD) ≥ 5 mm in two different quadrants were randomly assigned to scaling and root planing (SRP) as a control group or SRP + Er,Cr:YSGG as test group. Plaque index (PI), bleeding on probing (BOP), PD, relative probing attachment level (RPAL), and relative gingival recession (RGR) were evaluated at baseline, 3 months and 6 months after treatment by one calibrated examiner. PURPOSE: To assess the incidence and risk factors of Descemet membrane detachment due to laser application in femtosecond laser–assisted cataract surgery (FLACS). METHODS: In this retrospective case series, all patients who underwent FLACS with the LenSx system (Alcon Laboratories, Inc) were eligible to participate. The medical records were reviewed to collect data regarding potential risk factors related to Descemet membrane detachment, including patients' demographics, laser parameters, and ocular measurements. The eyes were separated into two groups based on the clinical diagnosis of Descemet membrane detachment as the femto-second laser was performing the corneal incisions. RESULTS: Five hundred ten eyes (304 patients) were included. Descemet membrane detachment occurred in 20 (3.9%) eyes of 16 (5.3%) patients. Four (1.3%) patients had a detachment in both eyes. In 16 (3.1%) eyes, the Descemet membrane detachment occurred in the secondary incision site. The eyes that had a detachment had a statistically lower mean endothelial cell density (2,193.40 ± 313.37 versus 2,385.08 ± 357.80 cells/ mm 2 ; P = .019), and a statistically higher prevalence of corneal guttata (25.0% versus 8.8%; P = .015). None of the other analyzed variables statistically differed between the groups ( P > .05). The risk of having Descemet membrane detachment was statistically higher among eyes with guttata (odds ratio = 3.47; P = .015) and in those with an endothelial cell density of less than 2,000 cells/mm 2 (odds ratio = 3.26; P = .014). CONCLUSIONS: The incidence of Descemet membrane detachment due to laser application in FLACS was 3.9%, with the associated risk factors being endothelial cell density of less than 2,000 cells/mm 2 and corneal guttata. Background and Objectives: The purpose of the present study was to investigate the anti-bacterial efficacy of passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI) and a 980-nm-gallium-aluminum-arsenide (GaAlAs) laser using a real-time DNA-based quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) assay and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Materials and Methods: Eighty-six extracted single- and double-rooted human teeth were used in the experiment. The following four experimental groups were evaluated, as well as a control group: group 1: single root + PUI (n = 20), group 2: single root + laser application (n = 20), group 3: double roots + PUI (n = 20), group 4: double roots + laser application (n =20), control group (n = 6): 3 single roots, 3 double roots. The qPCR assay was performed in three stages to evaluate the efficacy of the adjunctive method against Enterococcus faecalis. SEM analysis was also used to examine the microstructure of root canal surfaces. The data were statistically analyzed using the Friedman test and the Kruskal–Wallis test with Bonferroni adjustment. Results: The decrease in the DNA levels from S1 (before preparation) to S2 (just after preparation) was highly significant in all groups, and decreases in DNA levels from S2 to S3 (after incubation for 1 week) were found in all experimental groups except group 1. An inter-group analysis showed that PUI was significantly more effective in terms of antibacterial efficacy than GaAlAs laser irradiation in single root (p &lt, 0.05). However, in double roots, experimental groups did not show significantly lower DNA levels than the control group (p &gt, 0.05). SEM images showed that cleaning of the root canal surface and reduction of dentin debris were achieved only in single-rooted teeth when using PUI application. Conclusions: Two adjunctive methods were effective in reducing E. faecalis in single rooted tooth.

The aim was to systematically evaluate the probing depth (PD) reduction of lasers in scaling and root planing (SRP) of chronic periodontitis by network meta-analysis (NMA). Randomized controlled clinical trials (RCTs) were searched through electronic-search and hand-search up to January 2020. Standard mean different (SMD) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were counted for PD reduction. The random-effects NMA were performed using mvmeta routine in STATA software (version 13). This NMA analysed seven periodontal treatments through 37 RCTs. No inconsistency was detected. Compared with mechanical SRP, significant differences were in favour of diode laser (DL) as adjunct at 3 months (SMD = 0.61; 95% CI range: 0.27–0.96) and Nd:YAG as adjunct (SMD = 0.29; 95% CI range: 0.03–0.55), Er,Cr:YSGG as monotherapy (SMD = 0.37; 95% CI range: 0.04–0.71) and Er,Cr:YSGG as adjunct (SMD = 0.53; 95% CI range: 0.23–0.84) at 6 months after treatment. Compared with Er:YAG as monotherapy, significant differences were in favour of DL as adjunct at 6 months (SMD = 0.51; 95% CI range: 0.07–0.95) after treatment. In terms of PD reduction at 3-month follow-up, the ranking result from best to worst was Nd:YAG as adjunct, DL as adjunct, Er:YAG as adjunct, Er,Cr:YSGG as monotherapy, Er:YAG as monotherapy and mechanical SRP. In terms of PD reduction at 6-month follow-up, the ranking result was DL as adjunct, Nd:YAG as adjunct, Er:YAG as adjunct, Er,Cr:YSGG as adjunct, Er:YAG as monotherapy, Er,Cr:YSGG as monotherapy and mechanical SRP. Laser-assisted periodontal treatment has better PD reduction.

Introduction: The aim of this article was to evaluate the efficacy of photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) in the alveolar tissue healing process post-extraction using infrared thermography (IT).Case Presentation: A 36-year-old male patient had teeth extractions (18 and 28). Four PBMT sessions (660 nm; 2 J per tooth) were performed in the region of tooth 28 and recorded with thermographic images to compare the healing process, bilaterally. In the first two postoperative sessions, the temperature was higher (hyperradiant) on the left side (treated). After the third laser application, the left side was hyporradiant. In a later session, the treated side became hyperradiant compared to the control side. The alveolus of tooth 28 showed more rapid healing than tooth 18 over a period of 60 days.Conclusion: IT can be used to detect the favorable effect of PBMT on accelerating the healing process in the alveolus within 60 days after the tooth extraction. The laser-induced choroidal neovascularization (CNV) model has been widely used for research on wet age-related macular degeneration (wet-AMD) and other ocular neovascular diseases. In this model, the Bruch membrane is perforated by laser injury, resulting in neovascularization formed from the choroidal capillaries. It has become a standard method to evaluate the effect of different treatments on CNV progression in preclinical studies. This protocol can be used in various species, including rat, mouse, pig, and monkey. The rodent laser-induced CNV model is the most commonly used because of the advantages in both cost- and time-efficiency. It takes only 10-15 min to complete the whole laser procedure after adequate training and practicing the technique. Peak CNV formation occurs at approximately 2 weeks after laser application. The entire protocol may require up to 3 weeks to complete the treatment, fundus image acquisition, and tissue collection for histologic analysis. This chapter describes the detailed procedures, protocols, and useful notes on how to induce CNV by laser.

The term LASER is an acronym for ‘Light Amplification by the Stimulated Emission of Radiation’. Miaman was the first who introduced laser application in dentistry in 1960 and its hard and soft tissue application. There is lot of advancement in lasers in past two decades. Various hard tissue applications includes caries prevention, bleaching, restorative removal and curing, cavity preparation, dentinal hypersensitivity, growth modulation and for diagnostic purposes, whereas soft tissue application includes wound healing, removal of hyperplastic tissue to uncovering of impacted or partially erupted tooth, photodynamic therapy for malignancies, photostimulation of herpetic lesion. Although lasers proves to be slightly costlier than traditional treatment but its an effective tool to increase efficiency, specificity, ease and comfort of the dental treatment.

Background: The aim of this systematic review is to compare the effectiveness of lasers in the treatment of implant mucositis and peri-implantitis compared to conventional treatment (non-surgical or surgical: resective or regenerative). Methods: Sources of PubMed, Cochrane and Google Scholar search engines were used on articles published from 1997 to 2020 in English, with selected keyword criteria applied. Nine randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were selected. Results: All included studies were considered of “high quality” according to the quality assessment scale. The comparative assessment of the RCTs was done twice for each RCT based on the type of treatment and according to wavelength. There is strong scientific evidence that, regarding non-surgical treatment, adjunct laser application can provide better results only in the short term (three months). Regarding the surgical approach, the method of decontamination plays a subordinate role. All wavelengths/applications presented similar results. Conclusion: Within the limitations of this study, the adjunctive use of lasers in the treatment of peri-implant inflammation is effective for up to three months; there is no strong evidence regarding the long term benefit compared to conventional treatment.

We present a temperature dependent optical properties of Ge on Si under influence of Si intermixing and a finding on Δ valley emission. Arrhenius analysis reveals that Si intermixing significantly increase the thermal activation energy of direct valley emission by increasing the energy difference between Γ and L valley. A luminescence peak from Δ valley was revealed from the temperature-dependent study. A clear thermal activation of Δ valley could be observed. We also present monolithically integrated strained Ge nano-cavity fabricated on Si for laser application. The cavity is designed to have strain higher than 1 % and Q ~ 100,000.

Photobiomodulation is an important resource during an orthodontic treatment. It is useful to control post archwire activation pain, reduce orthodontic treatment time, and achieve faster-wound healing. The aim of this report is to present an ortho-surgical case treated with four different laser wavelengths applied during all stages of the treatment to achieve different results in the benefit of the patient. A severe class II 52-year-old female patient with muscular pain and temporomandibular disorders. The patient was treated with a surgery-first protocol and passive self-ligating brackets to achieve dental movement acceleration and pain control; the patient was irradiated using 808 nm wavelength, 100 mW, ED 80 J/cm2, E 2.2 J, 22 s along the vestibular and palatal surface performing a scanning movement. After surgery, the patient has irradiated 6 sessions for edema and inflammation control, with a 940 nm, in continuous mode, 2.5 W, 120 s, 85.71 J/cm2, over the right and left side. After 2 weeks, the patient reports paresthesia in her left lower lip. A paresthesia protocol was started with a 650 nm wavelength laser, using the following parameters: 100 mW, PD 0.2 W/cm2, E 6 J, 60 s, one session every 2 days for 3 weeks. When the patient reported one aphthous ulcer in her left lower lip, the affected surface was irradiated with a wavelength of the 660 nm laser, 25 J/cm2, 100 mW, for 14 s, applying laser by scanning the lesion 1 mm away. Only one laser application per aphthous lesion was made. The patient finished all the ortho-surgical treatment in 4 and a half months. Four successful wavelengths, but also two laser protocols were applied during the treatment, not only to accelerate orthodontic movement but also to reduce edema after orthognathic surgery, paresthesia, and aphthous ulcer as well.

The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the preventive efficacy of three dentin tubule occlusion methods against discoloration caused by triple-antibiotic paste (TAP). Sixty extracted human incisors were sectioned, and the access was opened. The specimens were randomly allocated to the following four groups (n = 15): bonding application (BD), teethmate desensitizer (TM), Nd:YAG laser application (LS), and no surface treatment (control, C). Specimens were discolored with TAP over a period of 3 weeks. The color was measured by spectrophotometry at two time-points: initially and after 3 weeks of TAP placement. Color differences (∆E) were calculated and analyzed. Discoloration was visually noticed in all teeth after 3 weeks. The differences between the control group and the three dentin tubule occlusion methods were statistically significant (p 0.05); however, there were no statistically significant differences among the BD, TM, and LS groups (p 0.05).

Background. Traumatism of surgical operations in dentistry dictates the need to search for minimally invasive methods of tissue alteration. The use of lasers makes it possible to solve this problem, since laser radiation possesses a lower operative injury, selective action and activates the reparative processes in the wound. Aim. To increase the effectiveness of surgical treatment of dental patients by using a diode laser. Materials and Methods. In a clinic, 134 patients from 18 to 82 years of age with various dental diseases were examined and underwent surgical treatment using a traditional method and a diode «PICASSO Lite» laser with 810 nm wavelength from AMD Lasers (USA), with the radiation power in the range from 0.6 to 1.0 W. The criteria for evaluation of the effectiveness of laser application were the data of clinical examination. Results. In comparison with the traditional method of treatment, use of a surgical laser resulted in a less pronounced postoperative edema and pain. The difference between healing time of the operative wound after use of surgical laser and after the traditional treatment was 3±0.5 days in case of suturing of the wound and 7±0.5 days in case of wound healing under the fibrinous film and under the iodoform tampon. The wound defect induced by laser radiation passed all stages of the wound process much faster that with use of scalpel. In addition, selective removal of pathological tissues reduced the likelihood of injury to the oral mucosa, which leads to reduction in the duration of treatment. Conclusions. Thus, the use of a diode laser allows to improve the technique of surgical treatment of patients and increases the effectiveness of treatment of patients with dental diseases.

Atomic layer deposition (ALD) facilitates the deposition of coatings with precise thickness, high surface conformity, structural uniformity, and nodular-free structure, which are properties desired in high-power laser coatings. ALD was studied to produce uniform and stable Al2O3 and HfO2 single layers and was employed to produce anti-reflection coatings for the harmonics (1ω, 2ω, 3ω, and 4ω) of the Nd:YAG laser. In order to qualify the ALD films for high-power laser applications, the band gap energy, absorption, and element content of single layers were characterized. The damage tests of anti-reflection coatings were carried out with a laser system operated at 1ω, 2ω, 3ω, and 4ω, respectively. The damage mechanism was discussed by analyzing the damage morphology and electric field intensity difference. ALD coatings exhibit stable growth rates, low absorption, and rather high laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT). The LIDT is limited by HfO2 as the employed high-index material. These properties indicate the high versatility of ALD films for applications in high-power coatings.

Nevus of Ota (NO) is a hamartoma of dermal melanocytes usually presents as unilateral blue, gray or brown macules or patches. It can impose a high burden of cosmetic and psychological disturbances in affected individuals. Q-Switched lasers appear to be an effective treatment for this kind of dermal melanocytosis. Multicolored Ota nevus is a rare variant of this kind of nevus and its treatment may be more challenging compared with unicolor lesions. Herein we report a 21-year-old woman with a multicolored nevus of Ota (blue and brown), which showed a dramatic response to a combination of 1,064 nm and 532 nm Q-Switched Nd:YAG lasers. We also discuss different aspects of the Q-switched laser application of Ota nevus treatment. We also focus on laser combination therapy to treat the nevus of Ota.

Introduction: It is impossible to apply orthodontic therapeutic laser during the orthodontic treatment and to select different times of exposure, frequency or intensity for every single cell. The whole area gets irradiated in seconds according to the laser type . This could have a proliferation effect in some cells and a harmful effect in others cells. So, it´s very important to asses the effects of a laser application on the cells involved in dental movement, to verify the effect and reaction after laser therapy. Objective: To create and standarized a clinical protocol to irradiate culture cells involved in dental movement (Human fibroblasts, osteoblasts and pre-osteoclasts in order to understand the basics of it´s clinical effect. Materials and methods: Gingival and periodontal fibroblasts, normal human osteoblasts (NHOst) and human osteoclast progenitor cells in culture were irradiated using a low energy level laser (As-GaAl), operated at 36.73mW, 832.79nm nm wavelength 3.75 J/cm2 and 32.40 seconds per well. Conclusions: The cytotoxicity tests showed that irradiation is safe protocol for the four groups of cell cultures.

Objective: To evaluate the effect of low grade soft laser clinically and radiographically on platform switching implants supporting mandibular complete over dentures. Materials and methods: Ten edentulous subjects were eligible for inclusion. Two platform switching implants were placed in canine area of all patients. After three months, locator attachments remained connected to the implants, and the denture delivered with the retentive components incorporated in the denture base. Application of low grade laser for the right side implant only. At the follow-up examinations gingival index, pocket depth and marginal bone loss were evaluated at 6, 9 and 12 months.Results: The sample of ten patients, with a mean age of 51 years was included in this study. All patients attended the 12-month follow-up. Non-statistically significant difference was found between the two sides regarding the gingival index, pocket depth and the marginal bone loss.Conclusion: Within the limitation of this study the platform switching implant design ,and the application of low grade soft laser proved to be effective in preservation of alveolar crest bone height , gingival index and pocket depth..

Thus, this study aimed to assess the effectiveness of LLLT for pain control after extraction of lower third molars. Materials and Methods: This randomized, double-blind, split-mouth study included patients who required bilateral extraction of unerupted lower third molars. Patients received LLLT on 1 side (laser group) but not on the opposite side (control group). On the experimental side, each patient received a laser application at 5 intraoral points for 30 seconds per point. This procedure was simulated on the control side. The pain control response was assessed with a modified pain visual analog scale at the following times: immediately after surgery (T0), after laser application (T1), 24 hours after surgery (T2), 48 hours after surgery (T3), and 72 hours after surgery (T4). Results: Thirty-two patients, 56.25% of whom were women, underwent extraction; the average age was 22.2 years. At the times analyzed, the laser group presented better results than the control group. As for the times, there were differences in pain scores between T0 (8.03 ± 14.87) and T3 (2.66 ± 4.23), as well as T4 (3.36 ± 7.83), in the laser group and differences between T0 (19.76 ± 26.66) and T3 (7.11 ± 10.76), as well as T4 (6.26 ± 13.14), in the control group. Conclusion: LLLT was effective in reducing pain after surgical removal of unerupted third molars. At T3 and T4, pain reduction in relation to T0 was noted in both groups. Purpose. To evaluate the specifications and technique properties of the new Femto LDV Z8 in creating intrastromal refractive lenticules during small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE). Methods. Six enucleated porcine eyeballs were equally divided into two groups (Femto LDV Z8 or VisuMax) and were randomly assigned to three experienced refractive surgeons who performed SMILE on each group. Five intraoperative time parameters and surgeons’ satisfaction on the surgical procedure were compared between two groups. Postoperatively, the roughness of the lenticule surfaces and the irregularity of edges were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and were also compared between the two groups. Results. Longer time on suction peak pressure, total laser application, and total surgery were spent in the Femto LDV Z8 group as compared with the VisuMax group. The Femto LDV Z8 group applied OCT scanning and offsetting before performing the laser procedure, which expended more time for these crucial steps. The widest range of surgeons’ satisfaction scores was found in the step of lenticule interface identification of the Femto LDV Z8 group. The roughness scores of the anterior and posterior lenticule surfaces were statistically less in the Femto LDV Z8 group than in the VisuMax group (anterior, ×180, p=0.039; anterior, ×250, p=0.337; posterior, ×180, p=0.006; and posterior, ×250, p=0.007). Conclusions. Femto LDV Z8 showed promising performances as a novel SMILE equipment for the correction of myopia. It has special and unique features for SMILE procedures, which need more learning and researching processes. With its low-energy high-frequency nJ-level laser system, the Femto LDV Z8 provided smoother lenticule surface than VisuMax.

Methods: Thirty Rattus norvegicus albinus Wistar were divided into three equal groups (n = 10), two experimentals and one control. Applying 20 g orthodontic force were attached to the maxillary incisors of the rats in all groups. Low dose laser was applied to the surrounding tissues of the maxillary incisors of the rats in the experimental groups. Two exposure times for laser irradiation were used for seven days: t = 12 min (energy dose = 72 J) and t = 9 min (energy dose = 54 J) by a 0.1 W DEKA brand diode laser with wavelength of 980 nm. Results: Osteoclastic activation increased in the 72 J group when compared to control group and decreased in comparison to the 54 J group. Osteoblastic activation was decreased in the 72 J group when compared to the control group and increased in comparison to the 54 J group. Conclusions: Applying 54 J laser energy has been found effective to accelerate the orthodontic tooth movement.

The experimental procedure of Yag laser clot blast therapy was done in two blind eyes due to old optic atrophy after taking a written consent. There were no complications seen at time of laser application in the post laser follow up of 12 months.

Peri-implant disease may affect survival of dental implants. The aim of the study is to analyze the effectiveness of diode laser as a supportive modality to the non-surgical conventional treatment of peri-implant mucositis (PiM) and initial peri-implantitis (PI). Twenty-three patients with single implants suffering from PiM or initial PI were selected and randomly divided into two groups; control group (CG) received non-surgical conventional treatment, and test group (TG) received non-surgical conventional treatment and diode laser application with wavelength of 980 nm. Probing pocket depth (PPD) and bleeding on probing (BOP) were recorded at baseline (T0) and at 3 months follow-up (T1). The average of PPD value for TG was 4.04 ± 0.54 mm at T0 and it was 2.98 ± 0.70 mm at T1. In the CG, PPD average was 3.8 ± 1.24 mm at T0 and was 3.54 ± 0.35 mm at T1. In TG, the BOP was positive in 44 sites at T0 and in 6 sites at T1. In CG, the BOP was positively observed in 52 sites at T0 and in 28 sites at T1. The 980-nm diode laser may be considered an adjunct to the conventional non-surgical treatments of PiM and initial PI.

Introduction: Dentinal hypersensitivity (DH) is an acute intensive tooth pain which can lead to dental annoyances during eating and drinking. Stimulating exposed dentinal tubules by either kind of thermal, tactile, chemical and/or osmotic stimuli is believed to be the cause of this pain. It is hypothesized that dentinal tubules’ orifice occlusion (DOO) can help relieve such dental irritations. Thus, this systematic review was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of laser application as a prevention and treatment modality on DH reduction. Methods: Electronic databases (MEDLINE, SCOPUS) were searched among randomized clinical trials from January 2007 to December 2016. The extraction of data and quality assessments were carried out by different independent observers. Results: A total of 499 items were found of which3 9 relevant articles were extracted. The profound findings proved lasers’ effectiveness as a treatment of DH. Although some of the researches reported no significant difference between laser and other desensitizing agents, most of the studies suggested that better results (both rapid and long-lasting) were obtained in combined modalities. Furthermore, the preventive role of this new technology has been emphasized as well. Nd-YAG (neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet) and diode lasers reduce DH after bleaching. Lasers can also protect cervical restorations from DH due to tubular occlusion. Moreover, it is suggested to apply lasers in relief of DH following scaling and root planning. Nevertheless, a few researchers dispute its beneficence as a result of placebo effect. Conclusion: The results obtained from several studies in the present review revealed that the application of lasers is effective not only in terms of treatment of DH, but also in the prevention of this intensive tooth pain. Among various types of lasers, the application of Nd:YAG laser has shown the best results in DH treatment.

Introduction: The abnormal maxillary labial frenum is common in children during the primary or mixed dentition stage. A conventional surgery for this abnormality usually requires infiltration anesthesia which leads to fear in children and consequent noncooperation during the surgery. The aim of present study was to evaluate the reduction in the need of infiltration anesthesia, intraoperative bleeding control and postoperative pain and wound healing in children when using the diode laser for abnormal labial frenum in the maxilla. Methods: The present study was carried out among 30 children attending the Hanoi Medical University, Vietnam. A Diode Laser with 810 nm wavelength and power of 0.8 W was used for frenectomy. Results: The proportion of procedures without any need of infiltration anesthesia was 70%, while 93.34% of children demonstrated positive and very positive behavior. Proportion of indolence on the first day after surgery was 83.3%. While 83.3% of children did not take any analgesics, not a single child complained of any pain 3 days after surgery. Conclusion: Our results indicated that the use of diode laser showed several benefits in maxillary labial frenectomy in children. These included reducing the need of infiltration anesthesia, increasing the children’s cooperation as well as decreasing the postoperative pain.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The goal of this review is to summarize the field to date and to discuss strengths and limitations of low-level laser (light) therapy (LLLT) for the future investigation as a treatment of inflammatory disease. RECENT FINDINGS: LLLT is a promising therapeutic, particularly for those diseases of skin and joints because they are most accessible to treatment. Indeed, the known mechanisms of LLLT support its use for anti-inflammatory purposes, as well as stimulation of tissue growth and repair. Although the standard of care for the majority of inflammatory diseases is immunosuppressive agents such as corticosteroids with undesirable toxicities, LLLT offers a unique approach by being non-invasive and incurring minimal side effects. It is also relatively inexpensive and accessible and even has the possibility to be patient directed at home. SUMMARY: There is evidence that LLLT is able to modulate the immune system at the skin and joint, and it has been shown to be efficacious in humans by affecting bacterial colonization as it may pertain to chronic rhinosinusitis. However, there is variability in the methods of laser application as well as a lack of evidence for laser type, dose-ranging studies, and wavelength selection that create barriers to the implementation of LLLT without further more rigorous and standardized study. The heterogeneity makes it difficult to draw strong conclusions about the efficacy of LLLT and its mechanisms.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the feasibility of intrastromal lenticule rotation (ISLR) as a novel technique for management of astigmatism up to 10.00 diopters (D). METHODS: Eighteen human donor corneas were mounted on an artificial anterior chamber. After laser application and dissection, the lenticule was rotated 90° in the intrastromal pocket. Scheimpflug tomography (Pentacam HR; Oculus Optikgeräte GmbH, Wetzlar, Germany) was acquired preoperatively and following ISLR. The attempted astigmatic correction was twice the cylindrical magnitude of the lenticule referenced to the corneal plane: 4.80 D (5.00 D group, n = 9) and 9.32 D (10.00 D group, n = 9), respectively. The change in keratometric astigmatism was evaluated by vector analysis. RESULTS: In the 5.00 D group, ISLR caused a mean absolute surgical induced astigmatism (SIA) of 5.30 ± 1.14 D with a correction index (CI) of 1.14 ± 0.25 and an angle of error (AoE) of −0.80° ± 4.61°. In the 10.00 D group, the SIA averaged 9.57 ± 1.10 D with a CI of 1.03 ± 0.12 and an AoE of 2.75° ± 3.60°. The average total corneal refractive power (TCRP) increased 1.36 ± 0.67 and 1.95 ± 1.57 D in the 5.00 D and 10.00 D groups, respectively. Postoperative optical coherence tomography revealed stromal redistribution in the periphery of the optical zone with tissue addition in the preoperative steep meridian and tissue reduction in the preoperative flat meridian. CONCLUSIONS: ISLR seemed feasible and precise for management of regular astigmatism up to 10.00 D ex vivo in human donor corneas. A myopic shift was observed in TCRP. BACKGROUND: Erosion is a widespread phenomenon with higher predilection in primary dentition. AIM: The aim of the present study is to assess the remineralising effect of Er,Cr:YSGG laser application combined with CPP-ACPF after erosive demineralisation by Coca-Cola in primary teeth. METHODS: Fifty teeth (n = 10) were divided into; Group I: Artificial saliva, (Saliva natural, Medac, UK), Group II: CPP-ACPF (MI Paste Plus, GC Corp, USA), Group III: Er,Cr:YSGG (Waterlase iPlus, USA), Group IV: CPP-ACPF + Er,Cr:YSGG, Group V: Er,Cr:YSGG + CPP-ACPF. Teeth were immersed in Coca-Cola for 10 min, 5 times/day for 5 days. DIAGNOdent (DD) measurements were taken before and after the experiment. RESULTS: There was a significant increase in DD readings after erosive-treatment cycles in all test groups. The highest reading was in samples immersed in artificial saliva, and the lowest was in those subjected to combined CPP-ACPF and Er,Cr:YSGG laser application, regardless of the sequence used. There was no significant difference between samples immersed in artificial saliva, and after CPP-ACPF application. Similarly, there was no significant difference between samples treated by combined treatment of CPP-ACPF and Er,Cr:YSGG application. However, there was a significant difference between samples immersed in artificial saliva or treated with CPP-ACPF application and those subjected to combined treatment CPP-ACPF along with Er,Cr:YSGG. CONCLUSION: Combining Er,Cr:YSGG laser and CPP-ACPF paste significantly increased enamel remineralisation, regardless of the sequence implemented. Saliva naturally and CPP-ACPF application had a comparable effect on remineralisation.

The clinical prospect of treating spinal cord injury by photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) is unclear as the spinal dosimetry of transcutaneous laser application is unknown, yet essential for clinical recommendations. Light irradiances at 9 sites over an 8cm length along the thoracic to lumbar segment of the spinal canal were measured in 6 cadaver dogs using a flexible intra-spinal probe, under a surface irradiance of 3.14W/cm2. The skin transmits 4-12% of 980nm PBMT light. On-contact technique is ~5 times more efficient than off-contact technique.
