We study an online game supply chain that is composed of a game developer and a distributor. We investigate the impact of the distributor sharing demand information on the game quality investment during the game development stage and the marketing investment. Our analyses show that information sharing does not always improve marketing investment. When the online game market demand is relatively insensitive to the game price, sharing information motivates the distributor to invest more in marketing. In addition, information sharing always affects the developer's decision in product quality. The developer will be less conservative in product quality when it is more certain about the market demand and commit a higher investment after having demand information shared with it. For the distributor, we find that information sharing only results in a higher markup decision when the market demand is not very sensitive to the game price. There exists a Pareto improvement region so that the distributor will voluntarily share the demand information, which benefits both supply chain members.

Image demoireing is a multi-faceted image restoration task involving both moire pattern removal and color restoration. In this paper, we raise a general degradation model to describe an image contaminated by moire patterns, and propose a novel multi-scale bandpass convolutional neural network (MBCNN) for single image demoireing. For moire pattern removal, we propose a multi-block-size learnable bandpass filters (M-LBFs), based on a block-wise frequency domain transform, to learn the frequency domain priors of moire patterns. We also introduce a new loss function named Dilated Advanced Sobel loss (D-ASL) to better sense the frequency information. For color restoration, we propose a two-step tone mapping strategy, which first applies a global tone mapping to correct for a global color shift, and then performs local fine tuning of the color per pixel. To determine the most appropriate frequency domain transform, we investigate several transforms including DCT, DFT, DWT, learnable non-linear transform and learnable orthogonal transform. We finally adopt the DCT. Our basic model won the AIM2019 demoireing challenge. Experimental results on three public datasets show that our method outperforms state-of-the-art methods by a large margin.

The near-infrared (NIR) persistent luminescence materials (PLMs) can remain long-lasting luminescence after removal of the excitation light, which permits bioimaging with high sensitivity owing to the absence of background fluorescence interference from in situ excitation. Recently, the NIR PLMs have aroused intensive research interest in bioimaging. However, the optimal excitation wavelength of current NIR PLMs is located in the ultraviolet region with shallow tissue penetration, making it difficult to activate effectively in vivo, and seriously hindering their further application in bioimaging. Herein, we report a novel kind of Cr3+ ions and Y3+ ions co-doped NIR PLM, Zn1.3Ga1.4Sn0.3O4:Cr3+,Y3+ (ZGSCY), which emits NIR persistent luminescence at 696 nm. Compared with Zn1.3Ga1.4Sn0.3O4:Cr3+ (ZGSC) excited by the light with a wavelength in the biological window (>650 nm), after being co-doped with Y3+ ions, the NIR persistent luminescence performance of ZGSCY is significantly improved because of the increase of trap concentration in the matrix. In addition, we synthesized ZGSCY nanoparticles (NPs) by the combustion method, which exhibit excellent optical properties after being excited by the light with a wavelength in the biological window. After surface modification with PEG, the ZGSCY NPs present low cytotoxicity. Notably, due to the co-doping of Y3+ ions, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of ZGSCY NPs in vivo imaging is about 1.8 times higher than that of the ZGSC NPs. Furthermore, the rechargeable in vivo imaging and passive tumor-targeted imaging are successfully achieved by activating with a light-emitting diode (LED, 659 nm) after intravenous injection of ZGSCY. Thus, this kind of NIR PLM with high excitation efficiency performance in the biological window is expected to promote its biomedical application in deep tissues.

Fluorescence imaging is a noninvasive and dynamic real-time imaging technique; however, it exhibits poor spatial resolution in centimeter-deep tissues because biological tissues are highly scattering media for optical radiation. The recently developed ultrasound-controlled fluorescence (UCF) imaging is a novel imaging technique that can overcome this bottleneck. Previous studies suggested that the effective contrast agent and sensitive imaging system are the two pivotal factors for generating high-resolution UCF images ex vivo and/or in vivo. Here, this review highlights the recent advances (2015–2020) in the design and synthesis of contrast agents and the improvement of imaging systems to realize high-resolution UCF imaging of deep tissues. The imaging performances of various UCF systems, including the signal-to-noise ratio, imaging resolution, and imaging depth, are specifically discussed. In addition, the challenges and prospects are highlighted. With continuously increasing research interest in this field and emerging multidisciplinary applications, UCF imaging with higher spatial resolution and larger imaging depth may be developed shortly, which is expected to have a far-reaching impact on disease surveillance and/or therapy.

The Terahertz (THz)-based thickness measurement of thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) demands smart determination of THz peaks instead of human intervention for efficiency and accuracy, especially in the case of uneven microstructure due to imperfect spraying conditions. To this end, a long short-term memory (LSTM) framework driven by a theoretical model of THz signals is proposed to locate peaks automatically and location errors are eliminated by finding the maximum around the originally located results. Then, the local extrema are used to extract peaks for calculating refractive index online to remove the influence of the change in refractive index on thickness measurement. Finally, the simulations and experiments were carried out to verify the proposed method. The results show that our method generated identical results with those from the manual intervention, while the efficiency is significantly improved.

Background: Increasing research reveals that long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) play an important role in various biological processes of human diseases. Nonetheless, only a handful of lncRNA-disease associations have been experimentally verified. The study of lncRNA-disease association prediction based on the computational model has provided a preliminary basis for biological experiments to a great degree so as to cut down the huge cost of wet lab experiments. Objective: This study aims to learn the real distribution of lncRNA-disease association from a limited number of known lncRNA-disease association data. This paper proposes a new lncRNA-disease association prediction model called LDA-GAN based on a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN). Method: Aiming at the problems of slow convergence rate, training instabilities, and unavailability of discrete data in traditional GAN, LDA-GAN utilizes the Gumbel-softmax technology to construct a differentiable process for simulating discrete sampling. Meanwhile, the generator and the discriminator of LDA-GAN are integrated to establish the overall optimization goal based on the pairwise loss function. Results: Experiments on standard datasets demonstrate that LDA-GAN achieves not only high stability and high efficiency in the process of confrontation learning but also gives full play to the semisupervised learning advantage of generative adversarial learning framework for unlabeled data, which further improves the prediction accuracy of lncRNA-disease association. Besides, case studies show that LDA-GAN can accurately generate potential diseases for several lncRNAs. Conclusion:: We introduce a generative adversarial model to identify lncRNA-disease associations.

Purpose: Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is a highly heterogeneous disease. Patients with early-stage TNBCs have distinct likelihood of distant recurrence. Current therapeutic guidance is still limited.Methods: We extracted transcriptome data for 189 pathologically confirmed pT1-2N0M0 TNBC patients at Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Center. Candidate mRNAs were filtered, which was followed by differential expressed mRNAs analysis, survival analysis, and LASSO Cox regression model. All-subsets regression program was used for constructing a multi-mRNA signature in the training set (n=159); the accuracy and prognostic value were then validated using an independent validation set (n=158). Results: Here, we profiled the transcriptome data from 189 early-stage TNBC patients along with 50 paired normal tissues. Early-stage TNBCs are featured of basal-like and immune-suppressed subtype and homologous recombination ability deficiency. We developed a prognostic signature contained seven mRNAs from transcriptome data (ACAN, KRT5, TMEM101, LCA5, RPP40, LAGE3, CDKL2). In both the training (n=159) and validation cohorts (n=158), the signature could identify patients with relatively high recurrence risks and serve as an independent prognostic factor. The signature had better prognostic value than traditional clinicopathological features in both sets. Among the seven mRNAs, TMEM101 is highly expressed in TNBC and represents a potential therapeutic target. Inhibition of TMEM101 impaired tumor progression.Conclusions: Our 7-mRNA signature could accurately predict recurrence risks of early-stage TNBCs. Clinical and genomic low risk TNBC patients may have the opportunity to avoid adjuvant chemotherapy

Online handwritten diagram recognition (OHDR) has attracted considerable attention for its potential applications in many areas, but it is a challenging task due to the complex 2D structure, writing style variation, and lack of annotated data. Existing OHDR methods often have limitations in modeling and learning complex contextual relationships. To overcome these challenges, we propose an OHDR method based on graph neural networks (GNNs) in this paper. In particular, we formulate symbol segmentation and symbol recognition as node clustering and node classification problems on stroke graphs and solve the problems jointly under a unified learning framework with a GNN model. This GNN model is denoted as Instance GNN since it gives the symbol instance label as well as the semantic label. Extensive experiments on two flowchart datasets and a finite automata dataset show that our method consistently outperforms previous methods with large margins and achieves state-of-the-art performance. In addition, we release a large-scale annotated online handwritten flowchart dataset, CASIA-OHFC, and provide initial experimental results as a baseline.

Video satellite can generate video image sequences with rich dynamic information, thus providing a new way for monitoring moving objects. However, to maintain high temporal resolution, video satellite images usually sacrifice their spatial resolution. Therefore, super-resolution (SR) plays a vital role in improving the quality of video satellite images. In this article, we propose a multiframe video SR neural network (MVSRnet) for video satellite image SR reconstruction. The proposed MVSRnet consists of three main subnetworks: an optical flow estimation subnetwork (OFEnet), an upscaling subnetwork (Upnet) and an attention-based residual learning subnetwork (ARLnet). The OFEnet aims to estimate low-resolution (LR) optical flow of multiple image frames. Upnet is then constructed to enhance the resolution of both input frames and the estimated LR optical flows. Motion compensation is subsequently performed according to the high-resolution (HR) optical flows. Finally, the compensated HR cube is fed to the ARLnet to generate SR results. Different from existing video satellite image SR methods, the proposed MVSRnet is a multiframe-based method with an attention mechanism, which can merge the motion information among adjacent frames and highlight the importance of extracted features. Experiments conducted on Jilin-1 and OVS-1 video satellite images demonstrate that the proposed MVSRnet significantly outperforms some state-of-the-art SR methods.

Here we proposed a single A-line sample-structure-nondependent (SSNd) dispersion detection and compensation method for Fourier-domain optical coherence tomography (FD-OCT), without need for acquiring and processing B-scan data. A new FD-OCT dispersion mismatch index, based on the line slope of the bright line in the A-line spectrogram, has been presented in the proposed method. With the new dispersion mismatch index, the proposed single A-line method can fast and visually detect the dispersion mismatch states of FD-OCT setup and perform the SSNd dispersion compensation, just using a single A-line. Experimental results of multiple samples demonstrated the advantages and convenience of the proposed method, and also proved that the proposed method can be used to analyze the relation of OCT imaging and optical path difference between the sample and reference arms.

AIMS Aerobic training (AT) and resistance training (RT) can reduce blood glucose and type 2 diabetes risk, and increase muscle mass for prediabetes patients. However, the impact of long-term AT and RT on cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of AT and RT on CVD risk reduction in prediabetes patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS 248 prediabetes patients were enrolled in this multi-center randomized controlled trial (RCT). Patients were randomly divided into 3 groups: RT (n = 82), aerobic training (AT (n = 83)), and control group (n = 83). Participants in RT and AT groups had moderate RT or AT 3 times a week (150 min/week) under supervision in 3 research centers for 24 months. Primary outcome was CVD risk measured by Framingham Risk Score (FRS) and The Chinese 10-year ischemic cardiovascular disease (ICVD) risk assessment tool. Secondary outcomes included in HOMA2-IR, HbA1c, blood pressure and serum lipid profile. RESULTS Both RT and AT groups experienced a significant reduction in HOMA2-IR, HbA1c, LDL-C, TC, SBP, and DBP at the end of 12 and 24 months. Although text detection methods have addressed several challenges in the past, there is a dearth of effective methods for text detection in deformable images, such as images containing text embedded on cloth, banners, rubber, sports jerseys, uniforms, etc. This is because deformable regions contain surfaces of arbitrarily shapes, which lead to poor text quality. This paper presents a new method for deformable text detection in natural scene images. It is observed that although the shapes of characters change in a deformable region, the pixel values and spatial relationship between the pixels do not change. This motivated us to explore extraction of Maximally Stable Extremal Regions (MSER) in an image in which pixels that share common features are grouped into components. The unique character shape variations led us to explore harmonic features to represent the component shape variations, using which a classifier classifies text and non-text components from the output of the MSER step. Additionally, the objective of developing a lightweight method with low computational cost motivated us to introduce a modified Pixel Aggression Network (PAN) for text deformable text detection at a component level. Comprehensive experiments which include experiments on our Deformable Text Dataset (DTD) and standard natural scene text datasets, namely, MSRATD-500, ICDAR 2019 MLT, Total-Text, CTW1500, ICDAR 2019 ArT and DSTA1500 datasets show that the proposed model outperforms the existing methods for our dataset as well as the standard datasets.

Background: The anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) seems to play an important role in behavioral deficits and executive dysfunctions in patients with behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD), while its specific and independent contribution requires clarification. Objective: To identify whether ACC abnormalities in gray matter (GM) volume and standardized uptake value ratio (SUVR) images are associated with disease severity of bvFTD, by analyzing hybrid T1 and 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (18F-FDG PET). Methods: We enrolled 21 bvFTD patients and 21 healthy controls in the study. Each subject underwent a hybrid PET/MRI study and a standardized neuropsychologic assessment battery. GM volume and SUVR are voxel-wise calculated and compared. Then we estimate the mean value inside ACC for further partial Pearson’s correlation to explore the association between GM volume/SUVR of the ACC and severity of behavioral deficit as well as executive dysfunction. Results: ACC was shown to be involved in both atrophy and hypometabolism patterns. This phase III trial (NCT04178850) evaluated the efficacy, safety, and immunogenicity of GB242, an infliximab biosimilar, vs. infliximab (Remicade®) reference product in patients with moderate-to-severe active rheumatoid arthritis (RA) combination with methotrexate (MTX) therapy. Patients were randomized in a 1:1 ratio to receive either GB242 or INF (3 mg/kg). Therapeutic equivalence of clinical response according to the American College of Rheumatology 20% (ACR20) response rate at week 30 was declared if the two-sided 95% CI for the treatment difference was within ± 14%. The comparison of GB242 with INF also included the proportion of patients achieving a week 30 ACR 50 response, ACR70 response, change in Disease Activity Score 28 (DAS28), as well as safety and immunogenicity. A total of 570 subjects were randomized into GB242 (N = 285) or INF (N = 285) and 283 subjects in each group were analyzed. At week 30, the ACR20 was 62.54% for the GB242 group (95% CI 56.62–68.20%) and 56.89% for the INF group (95% CI 50.90–62.74%). The difference between the two groups was 5.65% with a 95% CI of – 2.48 to 13.74. ACR50 response was 37.12% for GB242 and 32.86% for INF at week 30. ACR70 response was 19.79% for GB242 and 16.96% for INF at week 30, respectively. The incidence of treatment-emergent adverse events was comparable (77.4% in GB242 vs. 80.2% in INF) and detection of antidrug antibodies (ADA) to infliximab up to week 30 (60.8% in GB242 vs. 59.4% in INF) was comparable. GB242 demonstrated equivalent efficacy to INF at week 30. Moreover, GB242 was well tolerated, with a similar immunogenicity and safety profile comparable to INF.

Background Treatment decisions in patients undergoing non-cardiac surgery are based on clinical assessment. The Revised Cardiac Risk Index (RCRI) is pragmatic and widely used but has only moderate discrimination. We aimed to test the efficacy of the CHA2DS2-VASc score and the combination of CHA2DS2-VASc and RCRI to predict perioperative risks for non-cardiac surgery. Methods This pre-specified analysis was performed in a retrospective cohort undergoing intra-abdominal surgery in our center from July 1st, 2007 to June 30th, 2008. The possible association between the baseline characteristics (as defined by CHA2DS2-VASc and RCRI) and the primary outcome of composite perioperative cardiac complications (myocardial infarction, cardiac ischemia, heart failure, arrhythmia, stroke, and/or death) and secondary outcomes of individual endpoints were explored using multivariate Logistic regression. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (C-statistic) was used for RCRI, CHA2DS2-VASc, and the combined models, and the net reclassification improvement (NRI) was calculated to assess the additional discriminative ability. Results Of the 1079 patients (age 57.5 ± 17.0 years), 460 (42.6%) were women. A total of 83 patients (7.7%) reached the primary endpoint. Secondary outcomes included 52 cardiac ischemic events, 40 myocardial infarction, 20 atrial fibrillation, 18 heart failure, four strokes, and 30 deaths. The endpoint events increased with the RCRI and CHA2DS2-VASc grade elevated (P 2DS2-VASc was 0.765 (95% CI 0.709–0.820), indicating better performance than the RCRI (p = 0.011). Adding the CHA2DS2-VASc to the RCRI further increased the C-statistic to 0.774(95%CI 0.719–0.829), improved sensitivity, negative predictive value, and enhanced reclassification in reference to RCRI. Similar performance of the combined scores was demonstrated in the analysis of individual secondary endpoints. The best cut-off of a total of 4 scores was suggested for the combined CHA2DS2-VASc and RCRI in the prediction of the perioperative cardiac outcomes. Conclusions The CHA2DS2-VASc score significantly enhanced risk assessment for the composite perioperative cardiovascular outcome in comparison to traditional RCRI risk stratification. Incorporation of CHA2DS2-VASc scores into clinical-decision making to improve perioperative management in patients undergoing non-cardiac surgery warrants consideration.

In this paper, a color image encryption algorithm based on Fisher-Yates scrambling and DNA subsequence operation (elongation operation, truncation operation, deletion operation, insertion arithmetic) is proposed. Firstly, the three-dimensional color image is transformed into two-dimensional gray image, and the chaotic sequence generated by Chen system and Fisher-Yates scrambling method is used to scramble the plaintext images of R, G and B channels. Secondly, the three channel images of the scrambled plaintext image are transformed into three DNA sequence matrixes by using the DNA coding rules, and then the three DNA sequence matrixes are manipulated by using DNA subsequence operation and DNA addition, subtraction and XOR operation to destroy the scrambled plaintext information. Finally, the color encrypted image is obtained by using the DNA decoding rule. Experimental results and security analysis demonstrate that our encryption algorithm has good performance and may resist against various typical attacks.

Objective To assess the relationship between resilience and quality of life (QOL) of kidney cancer patients, including influencing factors. Methods Based on a cross-sectional study design, participants (N = 103) were recruited from patients who were admitted to the urology clinic of a medical center in Taiwan between April 2020 and January 2021. Data collection was accomplished via a questionnaire. The study variables included demographic information, disease attributes, happiness level, depression, cancer-related self-efficacy, resilience, and QOL. One-way analysis of variance, Pearson correlation coefficients, independent-sample t-tests, hierarchical regression, and process analysis were the statistical methods used to analyze the data. Results Kidney cancer patients who were less depressed exhibited better cancer-related self-efficacy and have better resilience. In non-depressed individuals, higher levels of happiness and better resilience resulted in better QOL. Resilience is a mediator that affects the relationship between depression and QOL. Conclusions Patients with better emotional state experience better resilience and QOL. Patients' better cancer-related self-efficacy is related to better resilience while better resilience is associated with better QOL. Clinical care providers need to evaluate and improve cancer-related self-efficacy, emotional state, and resilience of kidney cancer patients, which will improve their resilience and QOL.

Alzheimer's disease, the most common form of dementia in the elderly, is a kind of neurodegenerative disease. However, its pathogenesis and diagnosis remain unclear. M6A is related to nervous system development and neurodegenerative diseases. Here in this study, using multiple RNA-seq datasets of Alzheimer's brain tissues, along with bioinformatic analysis, we innovatively found that m6A reader protein IGF2BP2 was abnormally highly expressed in Alzheimer's patients. After compared between Alzheimer's and normal brain samples, and between IGF2BP2- high and IGF2BP2- low subgroups of Alzheimer's patients, we took the shared differentially expressed genes as the relevant gene sets of IGF2PB2 affecting Alzheimer's disease occurrence for subsequent analysis. Then, weight gene correlation analysis was conducted and 17 functional modules were identified. The module that most positively correlated with Alzheimer's disease and IGF2PB2-high subgroups were mainly participated in ECM receptor interaction, focal adhesion, cytokine-cytokine receptor interaction, and TGF-beta signaling pathway. Afterwards, a hub gene-based model including 20 genes was constructed by LASSO regression and validated by ROC curve for Alzheimer diagnosis. Finally, we preliminarily elucidated that IGF2BP2 could bind with mRNAs in a m6A-dependent manner. This study first elucidates the pathogenic role of IGF2BP2 in Alzheimer's disease. IGF2BP2 and its relevant m6A modifications are potential to be new diagnostic and therapeutic targets for Alzheimer's patients.

Background The detection of rib fractures (RFs) on computed tomography (CT) images is time-consuming and susceptible to missed diagnosis. An automated artificial intelligence (AI) detection system may be helpful to improve the diagnostic efficiency for junior radiologists. Purpose To compare the diagnostic performance of junior radiologists with and without AI software for RF detection on chest CT images. Materials and methods Six junior radiologists from three institutions interpreted 393 CT images of patients with acute chest trauma, with and without AI software. The CT images were randomly split into two sets at each institution, with each set assigned to a different radiologist First, the detection of all fractures (AFs), including displaced fractures (DFs), non-displaced fractures and buckle fractures, was analyzed. Next, the DFs were selected for analysis. The sensitivity and specificity of the radiologist-only and radiologist-AI groups at the patient level were set as primary endpoints, and secondary endpoints were at the rib and lesion level. Results Regarding AFs, the sensitivity difference between the radiologist-AI group and the radiologist-only group were significant at different levels (patient-level: 26.20%; rib-level: 22.18%; lesion-level: 23.74%; P 0.05). Conclusion AI software improved the sensitivity of RF detection on CT images for junior radiologists and reduced the reading time by approximately 1 min per patient without decreasing the specificity.

Background/purpose Growth arrest-specific 6 (Gas6) protein is involved in cell proliferation, differentiation, adhesion, migration in response to inflammatory processes. Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection induces a chronic inflammatory condition and combination of antiretroviral therapy improves immune function and decreases the inflammatory state. The aim of this study was to assess the implications of Gas6 in chronic inflammation status of HIV-infected patients undergoing different third regimens of antiretroviral therapy. The Gas6 may be a marker of chronic inflammation of HIV-infected patients. Methods A total of 356 adult males, including 258 HIV-infected patients and 98 healthy controls, were recruited. The demographic and clinical characteristics of the patients were collected. Laboratory assessment included hemogram, CD4 count, plasma HIV RNA load (PVL), hepatitis B and C viruses, and serum biochemistry. Plasma Gas6 concentrations were determined. Results The values of Gas6 were lower in HIV patients compared to healthy subjects (14.3 ± 6.4 vs 21.5 ± 15.2, p = 0.01). HIV patients that received antiviral regimen with abacavir had similar Gas6 level than those who received antiviral regimens with tenofovir (14.3 ± 6.5 vs 13.8 ± 5.9, p = 0.99). HIV patients that received antiviral regimen with protease inhibitors (PIs) had lower Gas6 level (13.1 ± 3.5 vs 14.2 ± 6.6 vs 14.6 ± 6.5, p = 0.03) than those who received antiviral regimens with non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (nNRTIs) and integrase inhibitors (INSTIs), respectively. Conclusions Decreased plasma Gas6 concentrations were observed in HIV patients. Gas6 levels are associated with different third regimen of highly active antiretroviral therapy. Gas6 may represent a unique marker for assessing the chronic inflammation state difference among cART regimens in HIV patients.

Background Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin disease that affects people's life quality. It has been found to be related to many detrimental factors including ultraviolet exposure. However, the association between alcohol consumption and rosacea has long been debated. Aims To elucidate this association, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis. Methods We performed a systematic search of the literature published before February 16, 2021 on PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane database and used a meta-analytic approach to calculate the pooled odds ratios (ORs) and the corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results Finally, 14 eligible studies were identified, and alcohol consumption was not found to be a risk factor for rosacea. However, in subgroup analysis, alcohol consumption increased the risk of phymatous rosacea (PhR) and the pooled OR was 4.17 (95% CI = 1.76-9.91). Conclusion Overall, our study showed that alcohol consumption was a risk factor in phymatous rosacea (PhR). More studies of rosacea investigating sex distribution, alcohol intake levels, and types of alcoholic beverages consumed are needed in the future.

The vestibular system is the sensory apparatus that helps the body maintain its postural equilibrium, and semicircular canal is an important organ of the vestibular system. The semicircular canals are three membranous tubes, each forming approximately two-thirds of a circle with a diameter of approximately 6.5 mm, and segmenting them accurately is of great benefit for auxiliary diagnosis, surgery, and treatment of vestibular disease. However, the semicircular canal has small volume, which accounts for less than 1% of the overall computed tomography image. Doctors have to annotate the image in a slice-by-slice manner, which is time-consuming and labor-intensive. To solve this problem, we propose a novel 3D convolutional neural network based on 3D U-Net to automatically segment the semicircular canal. We added the spatial attention mechanism of 3D spatial squeeze and excitation modules, as well as channel attention mechanism of 3D global attention upsample modules to improve the network performance. Our network achieved an average dice coefficient of 92.5% on the test dataset, which shows competitive performance in semicircular canals segmentation task.

Background The prognostic significance of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in elderly patients with type 2 diabetes is unclear. The aim of this study was to determine the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and mortality in elderly patients with OSA complicated with type 2 diabetes compared to patients with OSA without type 2 diabetes. Methods From January 2015 to October 2017, 1113 eligible elderly patients with OSA, no history of cardiovascular, ≥60 years of age, and complete follow-up records were enrolled in this consecutive multicentre prospective cohort study. All patients had completed polysomnography (PSG) examinations. An apnoea-hypopnoea index of ≥5 events per hour recorded by polysomnography was defined as the diagnostic criterion for OSA. We collected baseline demographics, clinical characteristics, sleep parameters and follow-up outcomes. The primary aim of this study was to identify the risk of incident major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE). Secondary outcomes were all-cause mortality, components of MACE and a composite of all events. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and Cox proportional hazards models were used to evaluate whether type 2 diabetes was associated with incident events. Results A total of 266 (23.9%) patients had OSA complicated with type 2 diabetes. MACE occurred in 97 patients during the median 42-month follow-up. Kaplan-Meier survival curves indicated a significant relationship between type 2 diabetes and MACE (log-rank P = 0.003). Multivariable Cox regression analysis showed that type 2 diabetes increased the risk of MACE (HR = 1.64, 95% CI:1.08–2.47, P = 0.019), hospitalisation for unstable angina (HR = 2.11, 95% CI:1.23–3.64, P = 0.007) and a composite of all events in elderly patients with OSA (HR = 1.70, 95% CI:1.17–2.49, P = 0.007). However, there were no significant differences in the incidence of cardiovascular death, all-cause mortality, MI and hospitalisation for heart failure between patients with and without diabetes (P > 0.05). The subgroup analysis demonstrated that females (AHR = 2.46, 95% CI:1.17–5.19, P = 0.018), ≥ 70 years (AHR = 1.95, 95% CI:1.08–3.52, P = 0.027), overweight and obese (AHR = 2.04, 95% CI:1.29–3.33, P = 0.002) with mild OSA (AHR = 2.42, 95% CI: 1.03–5.71, P = 0.044) were at a higher risk for MACE by diabetes. Conclusion OSA and type 2 diabetes are interrelated and synergistic with MACE, hospitalisation for unstable angina and a composite of all events development. Overweight and obese females, ≥ 70 years with mild OSA combined with type 2 diabetes presented a significantly high MACE risk.

C3 glomerulonephritis (C3GN) is a rare kidney disease resulting from dysregulation of the alternative complement cascade. Without treatment, approximately 70% of affected children and 30–50% of affected adults will develop worsening of proteinuria and progress to end-stage renal disease within 10 years of diagnosis. Here, we describe a 9-year-old Sudanese girl with no significant past medical history who presented to the Emergency Department with a 2-month history of fatigue, poor oral intake, and worsening facial and lower extremity edema, and subsequently found to have anemia, hypoalbuminemia, microscopic hematuria, and proteinuria. Additional laboratory testing revealed that the patient had low C3, high C3 nephritic factor (C3NeF), and high factor H. Renal function was normal. The diagnosis of C3GN was confirmed by renal biopsy. The patient was treated with ACE inhibitor, mycophenolate mofetil (600 mg per m2 per dose, every 12 h), in combination with “pulse” methylprednisolone at 30 mg/kg/day IV bolus (maximum 1 g) for 3 consecutive days, followed by 2 months of daily oral prednisolone (2 mg/kg/day) and alternate-day prednisolone weaning from 1 mg/kg to 0.1 mg/kg for additional 12 months. Mycophenolate was continued throughout her treatment course and for maintenance therapy. In response to treatment, anemia, microscopic hematuria, hypoalbuminemia, and proteinuria resolved. Complete complement profile before and at 6 months therapy showed normalization of C3NeF, complement regulatory factor H and C3. This present case provides evidence of the full responsiveness of a rare form of complement dysregulation C3GN to a combination of mycophenolate and corticosteroids. The disease has NOT recurred in >2 years after initial presentation.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a major microvascular complication of T2D. In this cross-sectional study, we investigated the association between various anthropometric indices of obesity and DR.Patients and Methods: A representative sample of 1952 patients with T2D participated in this cross-sectional study conducted in Shanghai, China. Anthropometric measures of obesity including weight, height, waist circumference, hip circumference, body mass index (BMI), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) were evaluated. The association between WHtR, WHR, and BMI and the presence of DR was examined with logistic regression models.Results: The prevalence of DR was higher in T2D patients with high WHtR compared to those with normal WHtR (p< 0.05). A higher BMI was associated with elevated risk of DR (model 1, p=0.034; model 2, p=0.036). WHR was unrelated to the occurrence of DR (p> 0.05).Conclusion: WHtR and BMI but not WHR are risk factors for DR in obese patients with T2D. In ferroelectric-based integrated devices, there are usually buffer layers between ferroelectric films and semiconductor substrates. Here, Bix%FeO3-δ (x = 95, 100, and 105) (BFOx) films are prepared directly on n-Si substrates by the sol-gel method, and the variation of the hysteresis loops with Bi content and heat treatment is investigated. With the help of the dielectric measurement and the composition analysis, a PN heterojunction is believed to exist at the BFOx/Si interface. The Bi/Fe ratio determines not only the type and concentration of charged defects in the films but also the height of the interface barrier and its binding effect on mobile charges. Furthermore, the distribution and the migration of charges can be regulated reversibly by heat treatment. This work reveals the interaction between ferroelectric films and semiconductor substrates, providing an important reference for the design and application of ferroelectric/semiconductor heterostructures.

With the increasing numbers of immigrant and refugee students across the US K–12 system, the xenophobia of the current political climate, and the effects of COVID-19 on the immigrant community, it is critical to examine schools that serve immigrant students and their families. Drawing on case studies of two public high schools that exclusively serve immigrant students, authors Adriana Villavicencio, Chandler Patton Miranda, Jia-Lin Liu, and Hua-Yu Sebastian Cherng examine how educators frame the current political context and how this frame informs their collective approach to engaging with and supporting families. The study finds that these schools shifted norms of parental engagement by proactively forging relationships with families, cultivating alliances with community partners, and mediating within families around challenges related to work and higher education to benefit the communities they serve. In so doing, these school actors have shifted the norms of parental engagement to center the perspectives, voices, and experiences of immigrant families.

Summary Soybean is one of the most important oilseed and fodder crops. Benefiting from the efforts of soybean breeders and the development of breeding technology, large number of germplasm has been generated over the last 100 years. Nevertheless, soybean breeding needs to be accelerated to meet the needs of a growing world population, to promote sustainable agriculture and to address future environmental changes. The acceleration is highly reliant on the discoveries in gene functional studies. The release of the reference soybean genome in 2010 has significantly facilitated the advance in soybean functional genomics. Here, we review the research progress in soybean omics (genomics, transcriptomics, epigenomics and proteomics), germplasm development (germplasm resources and databases), gene discovery (genes that are responsible for important soybean traits including yield, flowering and maturity, seed quality, stress resistance, nodulation and domestication) and transformation technology during the past decade. At the end, we also briefly discuss current challenges and future directions.

Accompanied with the clinical routine examination demand increase sharply, the efficiency and accuracy is the first priority. However, the issues on the automatic detection and localization of cells in microscopic images of specific biological sample in super-depth-of-field (SDoF) system remains great challenges. We proposed object detection method for cells and other phenotypic components in the SDoF micrograph based on Retinanet. Compared the current mainstream algorithm, the mean average precision (mAP) index is significantly improved. In the experiment of leucorrhea samples and fecal samples, mAP indexes are 83.1% and 88.1% respectively, with an average increase of 10%. These improved characteristics can put the efficiency and accuracy forward significantly. The algorithm proposed in this paper can be integrated into the fecal and leucorrhea automatic detection system.

The majority of smokers relapse even after successfully quitting because of the craving to smoking after unexpectedly re-exposed to smoking-related cues. This conditioned craving is mediated by reward memories that are frequently experienced and stubbornly resistant to treatment. Reconsolidation theory posits that well-consolidated memories are destabilized after retrieval, and this process renders memories labile and vulnerable to amnestic intervention. This study tests the retrieval reconsolidation procedure to decrease nicotine craving among people who smoke. In this study, 52 male smokers received a single dose of propranolol (n = 27) or placebo (n = 25) before the reactivation of nicotine-associated memories to impair the reconsolidation process. Craving for smoking and neural activity in response to smoking-related cues served as primary outcomes. Functional magnetic resonance imaging was performed during the memory reconsolidation process. The disruption of reconsolidation by propranolol decreased craving for smoking. Reactivity of the postcentral gyrus in response to smoking-related cues also decreased in the propranolol group after the reconsolidation manipulation. Functional connectivity between the hippocampus and striatum was higher during memory reconsolidation in the propranolol group. Furthermore, the increase in coupling between the hippocampus and striatum positively correlated with the decrease in craving after the reconsolidation manipulation in the propranolol group. Propranolol administration before memory reactivation disrupted the reconsolidation of smoking-related memories in smokers by mediating brain regions that are involved in memory and reward processing. These findings demonstrate the noradrenergic regulation of memory reconsolidation in humans and suggest that adjunct propranolol administration can facilitate the treatment of nicotine dependence. The present study was pre-registered at ClinicalTrials.gov (registration no. ChiCTR1900024412).

In this study, the aim is to explore whether frailty status modified the associations of serum 25(OH)D levels with all-cause and cause-specific mortality in the oldest old Chinese population.A total of 1411 participants aged at least 80 years were enrolled in the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS). Information on serum 25(OH)D level, frailty status, and covariates were examined at baseline. All-cause and cause-specific mortality status were ascertained during the follow-up survey conducted in 2017-2018 by using the ICD-10 codes. Cox proportional hazard models with stratified analyses were performed to evaluate potential associations. Over a median follow-up of 3.2 years, 722 (51.2%) participants were deceased, including 202 deaths due to circulatory diseases, and 520 deaths due to noncirculatory causes. After multivariable adjustment, the lowest quartile of serum 25(OH)D levels (Hazard Ratios (95% Confidence Intervals), 1.85 (1.45-2.36), 1.85 (1.45-2.36), 1.73 (1.31-2.29), respectively) and frailty (Odd Ratios (95% Confidence Intervals), 1.91 (1.60-2.29), 2.67 (1.90-3.74), 1.64 (1.31-2.05)) were associated with significantly higher risk of all-cause mortality, circulatory mortality, and noncirculatory mortality, respectively. In addition, we observed significant interactions among 25(OH)D and frailty on the risk of all-cause and cause-specific mortality (all P-interaction 0.001). Similar results were found in sensitivity analyses by excluding participants who died in the first year of follow-up and using clinical cutoffs of serum 25(OH)D levels.Low serum 25(OH)D levels were associated with higher risk of all-cause and cause-specific mortality among the oldest old of the Chinese population, and the associations were significantly stronger in individuals with frailty.

AIM: To evaluate related factors with the change of spherical equivalents (ΔSE) and determine the suitable predictor of clinically significant ΔSE (≥0.50 D) with cyclopentolate hydrochloride on Chinese children. METHODS: A total of 145 right eyes of 145 children aged 4 to 15y were enrolled. Intraocular pressure, axial length and lag of accommodation (LOA) were assessed before cycloplegia induced by 3 drops of 1% cyclopentolate at 5-minute intervals. SE was measured before and 1h after the first drop of cyclopentolate. ΔSE was compared between different gender groups and among refractive groups. Multivariate linear regression analysis was performed to find related factors with ΔSE. ROC analysis was used to figure out the suitable predictor of clinically significant ΔSE. RESULTS: For the total 145 eyes, the mean SE reached up to -0.70±1.86 D from -1.30±1.62 D, with the mean ΔSE of 0.60±0.55 D. Data augmentation refers to a group of techniques whose goal is to battle limited amount of available data to improve model generalization and push sample distribution toward the true distribution. While different augmentation strategies and their combinations have been investigated for various computer vision tasks in the context of deep learning, a specific work in the domain of medical imaging is rare and to the best of our knowledge, there has been no dedicated work on exploring the effects of various augmentation methods on the performance of deep learning models in prostate cancer detection. In this work, we have statically applied five most frequently used augmentation techniques (random rotation, horizontal flip, vertical flip, random crop, and translation) to prostate Diffusion-weighted Magnetic Resonance Imaging training dataset of 217 patients separately and evaluated the effect of each method on the accuracy of prostate cancer detection. The augmentation algorithms were applied independently to each data channel and a shallow as well as a deep Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) were trained on the five augmented sets separately. We used Area Under Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve (AUC) to evaluate the performance of the trained CNNs on a separate test set of 95 patients, using a validation set of 102 patients for finetuning. The shallow network outperformed the deep network with the best 2D slice-based AUC of 0.85 obtained by the rotation method.

The satellite-based quantification of cloud radiative forcing remains poorly understood, due largely to the limitation or uncertainties in characterizing cloud-base height (CBH). Here, we use the CBH data from radiosonde measurements over China in combination with the collocated cloud-top height (CTH) and cloud properties from MODIS/Aqua to quantify the impact of CBH on shortwave cloud radiative forcing (SWCRF). The climatological mean SWCRF at the surface (SWCRFSUR), at the top of the atmosphere (SWCRFTOA), and in the atmosphere (SWCRFATM) are estimated to be −97.14, −84.35, and 12.79 W m−2, respectively for the summers spanning 2010 to 2018 over China. To illustrate the role of the cloud base, we assume four scenarios according to vertical profile patterns of cloud optical depth (COD). Using the CTH and cloud properties from MODIS alone results in large uncertainties for the estimation of SWCRFATM, compared with those under scenarios that consider the CBH. Furthermore, the biases of the CERES estimation of SWCRFATM tend to increase in the presence of thick clouds with low CBH. Additionally, the discrepancy of SWCRFATM relative to that calculated without consideration of CBH varies according to the vertical profile of COD. When a uniform COD vertical profile is assumed, the largest SWCRF discrepancies occur during the early morning or late afternoon. By comparison, the two-point COD vertical distribution assumption has the largest uncertainties occurring at noon when the solar irradiation peaks. These findings justify the urgent need to consider the cloud vertical structures when calculating the SWCRF which is otherwise neglected.

To explore the degradation, drug release, and mechanical properties of drug-incorporated films made of different ratios of poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) and different amounts of paclitaxel (PTX), which may serve as the material platform for the manufacturing of biodegradable drug-eluting biliary stents. PLGA of different lactic acid/glycolic acid ratios (50/50, 70/30, and 80/20) and 0%, 10, 20, and 30% weight by weight (w/w) PTX was mixed to make PLGA films, which were then cut into small pieces for further testing. Films were immersed in phosphate-buffered saline (pH 7.4) for a maximum of 11 weeks. Samples were taken randomly at Day 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, and weekly thereafter until Week 11 to test tensile strength, weight loss, pH value of the soaking solution, and drug release. The morphology of films was observed using scanning electron microscope (SEM). At Week 10 of degradation, PLGA 80/20 still withstood a tensile strength of 9.7 newton (N), while PLGA 50/50 and 70/30 cracked spontaneously since Day 4. At Week 11, weight loss of PLGA 50/50, 70/30, and 80/20 was 95.15, 82.32, and 16.17%, respectively; and the lowest pH value of soaking solution was 1.87, 1.95, and 6.58, respectively. Drug release of 10, 20, and 30% PTX groups was 3.52–4.48%, 1.90–2.26%, and 1.44–2.06%, respectively. SEM proved smooth films before degradation; however, after the tensile strength was lost, cracks could be seen. The degradation rate of PLGA can be controlled by altering lactic acid/glycolic acid ratio. Overall, PLGA 50/50 and 70/30 degrade significantly faster than 80/20. PLGA can serve as an effective drug carrier for PTX while being the stent strut, and PTX can be slowly released as PLGA degrades.

Objectives Recombinant human interferon-α1b (IFN-α1b) is the first genetic engineered drug of China and is approved for cancer treatment by Chinese Food and Drug Administration. Although recombinant IFN-α1b is biologically and therapeutically active, its long-term efficacy against advanced melanoma is unknown. Methods Ninety patients who were diagnosed with stage IV melanoma and received recombinant IFN-α1b therapy in our department were included in this study. The safety and efficacy of IFN-α1b were analyzed. Results IFN-α1b was overall well tolerated, with only 7.8% of the patients showing grade 3 toxicity and none with grade 4 toxicity or treatment-related death. The most common adverse effect was fever (78.9%). Furthermore, increasing the drug dosage showed no increase in the incidence of adverse events. The median overall survival (mOS) of the cohort was 14.1 months (95% confidence interval, 11.3-16.9 months). There was no significant difference of the mOS between samples of various primary sites. In the 42 patients who had not received prior adjuvant interferon therapy, the objective response rate, disease control rate and clinical benefit rate were 7.1, 28.5 and 21.4%, respectively. Conclusion Our findings suggest that systemic IFN-α1b treatment is a relatively safe therapy and could prolong the survival of patients with unresectable metastatic melanoma.

Background General role of cancer-associated fibroblast (CAF) and its infiltration characteristics in gastric cancer remains to be unknown. Methods We estimate CAF infiltration in bulk tumor tissue with RNA-seq data and analyzed its relationship with gastric cancer subtype, survival and immune microenvironment. Results We revealed CAF intend to have higher infiltration in diffuse, genomically stable, and advanced gastric cancer. CAF is associated with immunosuppressive microenvironment. Wide transcriptomics alterations occur in high CAF infiltrated gastric cancer, PI3K/AKT, TGFB and Hedgehog pathway are remarkable in this procedure. We utilized receptor tyrosine kinases and TGFB pathway ligands to construct risk score system that can predict survival. Conclusion Thus, CAF is associated with aggressive phenotype of gastric cancer and risk score based on RTK and TGFB pathway ligands expression is a promising tool for assessment of gastric cancer survival.

Although aspirin is one of the most widely used agent in patients with ASCVD, there were only a few studies focusing on the effects of low-dose aspirin on uric acid metabolism with controversial results. The present study aimed to investigate an association between low-dose aspirin treatment for more than one month and serum uric acid (SUA) with its urinary excretion in elderly patients.Patients and Methods: This paper presents an observational retrospective cross-sectional study to determine the association between continuous daily taking low-dose aspirin (50– 100mg) for more than one month and SUA with fraction excretion of uric acid (FEUA) in elderly patients. A total of 506 inpatients equal or over 60 in Department of Geriatrics of Peking University First Hospital were enrolled from 2017 to 2020. About 41.9% of them were taking aspirin for more than one month, while others were not taking this medicine. The correlation between aspirin use and SUA or FEUA was analyzed, and group-comparison was performed in different dosage groups of aspirin.Results: After correcting confounding factors, there is no remarkable correlation between taking low-dose aspirin and SUA or FEUA, but a decreasing trend (coefficients=− 4.946) of SUA in hyperuricemia patients with low-dose aspirin was observed despite no obvious difference (P=0.534). Whether SUA or FEUA has no significant difference between 50mg/d and 100mg/d aspirin subjects.Conclusion: SUA and urinary uric acid excretion are not associated with using of 50– 100mg/d aspirin for more than one month in elderly patients with ASCVD or at risk.Keywords: aspirin, uric acid, excretion, arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease, elderly

Transfer learning methods exploit similarities between different datasets to improve the performance of the target task by transferring knowledge from source tasks to the target task. “What to transfer” is a main research issue in transfer learning. The existing transfer learning method generally needs to acquire the shared parameters by integrating human knowledge. However, in many real applications, an understanding of which parameters can be shared is unknown beforehand. Transfer learning model is essentially a special multi-objective optimization problem. Consequently, this paper proposes a novel auto-sharing parameter technique for transfer learning based on multi-objective optimization and solves the optimization problem by using a multi-swarm particle swarm optimizer. Each task objective is simultaneously optimized by a sub-swarm. The current best particle from the sub-swarm of the target task is used to guide the search of particles of the source tasks and vice versa. The target task and source task are jointly solved by sharing the information of the best particle, which works as an inductive bias. Experiments are carried out to evaluate the proposed algorithm on several synthetic data sets and two real-world data sets of a school data set and a landmine data set, which show that the proposed algorithm is effective.

In the process of layer inspection and hole mending, it was found that the corrosion of tubing in a well was serious, and perforation and fracture occurred. Part of the tubing was found to be cracked from the failed pipe samples, and relatively serious pitting corrosion pits were found on the surface of the outer wall. The fracture morphology and corrosion products were analyzed by means of macroscopic analysis and metallographic microscope, SEM and EDS. The result show that the mechanical damage of the outer wall of the tubing was the primary condition for accelerating corrosion, and the severe corrosion thinning of the inner and outer walls of the tubing was the main reason for the failure of the tubing string. The corrosion perforation of tubing was mainly caused by internal corrosion.

In this paper, we address the fixed-time consensus tracking problem of second-order leader-follower multi-agent systems with nonlinear dynamics under directed topology. The consensus tracking algorithm consists of distributed observer and observer-based decentralized controller. The fixed-time distributed observer guarantees that each follower estimates the leader’s state under directed topology within a fixed time, where the upper bound of convergence time is independent on the initial conditions. The fixed-time decentralized controller makes each follower converge to the leader’s state in fixed time via tracking the distributed observer’s state and overcome the nonlinear dynamics without adding linear control terms. Finally, the numerical example is provided to illustrate the effectiveness of the results.

Patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis dialysis (MHD) are at high risk of sarcopenia. Diagnosing sarcopenia requires measurement of both muscle mass and muscle function. However, few studies have rigorously evaluated the best timing for assessment. This study aimed to evaluate the changes in body composition following hemodialysis in an Asian population. Overall, 87 MHD patients were included. Body composition was estimated using bioelectrical impedance analysis. Handgrip strength was measured using a quantitative handgrip dynamometer, and physical performance was assessed using the 6-m usual gait speed. All measurements were performed pre and post dialysis. Blood samples were collected before and after the same dialysis session. The prevalence of sarcopenia ranged from 6.9% to 18.8% pre dialysis (40–59-year group, 6.9%; 60–80-year group, 16.7%; >80-year group, 18.8%) and from 13.8% to 62.5% post dialysis. The body weight decreased from 59.32 ± 11.20 kg pre dialysis to 57.71 ± 11.05 kg post dialysis. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common functional gastrointestinal disease worldwide. Current guidelines of IBS are mostly based on the western populations and expected to vary in different communities. China has a large population and a vast literature is available on IBS. Due to linguistic variations in the literature, the studies are not widely known and their conclusions thus remain largely obscured to the western medical literature. In this article, we reviewed the published literatures on the investigations of IBS epidemiology, diagnosis, and management in the Chinese population and emphasized the different findings gleaned from the western publications. The detailed literature review will benefit understanding of and promote future study on IBS.
