BackgroundIron deficiency (ID) and iron deficiency anemia (IDA) are highly-prevalent nutrient deficiencies and have been shown to have a range of negative effects on cognition and brain function. Human intervention studies including measures at three levels—blood, brain, and behavior—are rare and our objective was to model the relationships among measures at these three levels in school-going Indian adolescents.MethodsMale and female adolescents in rural India were screened for ID/IDA. Subjects consumed 2 meals/day for 6 months; half were randomly assigned to consume meals made from a standard grain (pearl millet) and half consumed meals made from an iron biofortified pearl millet (BPM). Prior to and then at the conclusion of the feeding trial, they completed a set of cognitive tests with concurrent electroencephalography (EEG).ResultsOverall, serum ferritin (sFt) levels improved over the course of the study. Ten of 21 possible measures of cognition showed improvements from baseline (BL) to endline (EL) that were larger for those consuming BPM than for those consuming the comparison pearl millet (CPM). Critically, the best model for the relationship between change in iron status and change in cognition had change in brain measures as a mediating factor, with both change in serum ferritin as a primary predictor and change in hemoglobin as a moderator.ConclusionsA dietary intervention involving a biofortified staple grain was shown to be efficacious in improving blood iron biomarkers, behavioral measures of cognition, and EEG measures of brain function. Modeling the relationships among these variables strongly suggests multiple mechanisms by which blood iron level affects brain function and cognition.Trial registrationRegistered at ClinicalTrials.gov,NCT02152150, 02 June 2014.

OBJECTIVES: Smoking cessation research suggests that women are more likely than men to respond to financial incentives to quit smoking, despite having lower rates of smoking cessation overall. Animal models suggest that iron deficiency, which is more prevalent in women, may alter dopaminergic pathways involved in both reward processing and addiction. The present study examines the extent to which iron status impacts ability to quit smoking and performance on a battery of cognitive tasks, including tasks assessing learning and decision-making which depend on the integrity of the dopaminergic pathways. METHODS: Participants were recruited from a local smoking cessation clinic and followed for 6 months as they received counseling to quit smoking. Visits included a baseline appointment, as well as 1- and 6-month follow up visits. At each appointment, participants performed cognitive tests, including the serial reaction time task (SRT) and probabilistic selection task (PST), with concurrent EEG, then gave a small sample of blood. Smoking behavior was examined using time to relapse (TTR), which was the week (1–26) in which the participant relapsed, if relapse occurred. Iron status variables of interest were hemoglobin (Hb) and percentile of the NHANES III age- and race-adjusted distributions of serum ferritin (sFtP). Correlations examined the associations between iron status variables and reaction times (RTs) on the SRT and PST, choice behavior on PST, and TTR. Background: Iron deficiency is a global public health concern and has implications on the health status of women in reproductive age. Objective: We hypothesized that improving iron intake with double fortified salt would improve food intake, resulting in higher energy, nutrient intakes, and weight indicators of female tea plantation workers. Methods: In this randomized double-masked study, the participants (n = 245) were assigned to receive salt double fortified with iron and iodine (DFS; treatment) or salt fortified with iodine (control) and followed for 7.5 to 9 months. Dietary intakes were measured at three time points, baseline, midpoint, and end line using (1) food frequency questionnaire, (2) 24-hour recall, and (3) weighed lunch intake. Anthropometric measures of height (cm), weight (kg), and mid-upper arm circumference (cm) were also recorded at three time points. Mixed-model repeated-measures approach was used to detect group differences across time. Results: Double fortified salt improved dietary iron intake in the treatment group compared to the control group ( P < .001). No other dietary or anthropometric differences could be attributed to treatment. Significant effect of time was observed in the intake frequency of major food groups and calcium, vitamin A and C ( P Conclusion: Addition of DFS in the diet improved dietary iron intake but did not affect the intake of energy, other nutrients, or nutritional status indicators. The improvement observed in the dietary iron intake demonstrates that fortification is an effective strategy to address iron deficiency in at-risk populations.

Background: Cognitive complaints (“chemo brain”) are reported frequently after breast cancer treatment but little is known about its incidence and causes. Before we can intervene we need to be able to diagnose it properly. Mini Mental state examination (MMSE) can detect advanced Alzheimer's but won't help in detecting mild cognitive disturbances. We used Montreal Cognitive Assessment for Telephone (MoCA-T) and full scale Montreal Cognitive Assessment for Telephone (MoCA) to diagnose mild cognitive impairments in patients having normal MMSE. Methods: 20 breast cancer survivors aged 50 years or older completed MoCA-T and MoCA, a year after they completed their treatment for breast cancer, describing the impact of their treatment regimen on their short term memory and ability to think and concentrate. On Day 5, they underwent a standardized laboratory protocol that assessed both behavioral and electroencephalographic (EEG) indicators of memory consolidation. Results: Patient characteristics: 20 postmenopausal breast cancer survivors aged 50 or above participated in the study a year after they completed their therapy. We are reporting preliminary results of 10 patients. Patients had stage I-III disease (stage I – One patient, Stage II – five patients, and stage III- four patients). All of them received various chemo regimens e.g. Cytoxan, methotrexate, 5-FU (CMF), Taxol, Trastuzumab (TH), Adriamycin (AC), taxotere, carboplatin (TCH). 8/10 patients received adjuvant radiation. 1/10 patient underwent reconstruction later. 7/10 patients received hormonal therapy with aromatase inhibitors. Results of MoCA –T and MoCA: MoCA-T, tests attention and concentration, executive functions, memory, language, conceptual thinking, calculations, and orientation. Possible scores range from 0-22 and scores 26 is normal but 5/10 patients had abnormal MoCA and 3/10 patients had impaired MoCA-T signifying that almost 50%patients develop mild cognitive impairment after breast cancer treatment. During memory consolidation, EEG contained less theta and frequent bursts of alpha waves which is commonly seen in patients with neuropathic pain and insomnia. We are compiling our full data for EEG but the early results show that the patients had less theta but had frequent bursts of alpha waves, a pattern seen commonly in patients with insomnia and neuropathic pain. They retain fewer items and take more time responding to items as compared to normal people. We need more studies to diagnose and treat mild cognitive impairment (“chemo brain”) in breast survivors as most of these patients are still working and can be a valuable part of the community. This paper proposes a novel approach to assess audiovisual integration for both congruent and incongruent speech stimuli using reaction times (RT). The experiments are based on the McGurk effect, in which a listener is presented with incongruent audiovisual speech signals. A typical example involves the auditory consonant/b/combined with a visually articulated/g/, often yielding a perception of/d/. We quantify the amount of integration relative to the predictions of a parallel independent model as a function of attention and congruency between auditory and visual signals. We assessed RT distributions for congruent and incongruent auditory and visual signals in a within-subjects signal detection paradigm under conditions of divided versus focused attention. Results showed that listeners often received only minimal benefit from congruent auditory visual stimuli, even when such information could have improved performance. Incongruent stimuli adversely affected performance in divided and focused attention conditions. Our findings support a parallel model of auditory-visual integration with interactions between auditory and visual channels.

Background: Iron deficiency is the most widespread nutritional deficiency in the world. Objective: The objective of this randomized efficacy trial was to determine the effects of iron-biofortified pearl millet (FePM) on iron status compared with control pearl millet (Control-PM). Methods: A randomized trial of biofortified pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum), bred to enhance iron content, was conducted in 246 children (12‐16 y) for 6 mo in Maharashtra, India. Iron status [hemoglobin, serum ferritin (SF), soluble transferrin receptor (sTfR), and total body iron (TBI)], inflammation (C-reactive protein and a-1 acid glycoprotein), and anthropometric indices were evaluated at enrollment and after 4 and 6 mo. The uncertainty paradigm has been used in vision research to evaluate whether stimulus components are processed independently or not. The paradigm consists of several experimental conditions from which sensitivity indices are estimated and combined to provide evidence for or against the independence of stimulus components in perception. In typical applications, a multicomponent stimulus differs in one of its components from a standard value and the observer needs to decide if the change is an increment or decrement. In the certainty condition, the observer knows which component will contain the change; in the uncertainty condition, the component that differs from standard is unknown. Performance across the two conditions can be compared to that which is predicted by independence of components. The mathematical foundations upon which performance indices are related to component independence have been inadequately examined in previous applications and we clarify many of these concepts here. We derive predictions for observer sensitivity in the uncertainty condition and a relative measure, root-mean-square (RMS) that incorporates both uncertainty and certainty performance for three major decision models using a signal detection theory framework: a distance-classifier, the optimal decision model, and a decisionally separable (“independent” decisions) strategy. We also consider, using these decision models, implications for sensitivity and RMS when stimulus components are perceptually correlated. We present data from an experiment involving the perception of facial features in order to demonstrate how to apply the theoretical results.

Background: Iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia have been shown to have negative effects on aspects of perception, attention, and memory. Objective: The purpose of this investigation was to assess the extent to which increases in dietary iron consumption are related to improvements in behavioral measures of perceptual, attentional, and mnemonic function. Methods: Women were selected from a randomized, double-blind, controlled food-fortification trial involving ad libitum consumption of either a double-fortified salt (DFS) containing 47 mg potassium iodate/kg and 3.3 mg microencapsulated ferrous fumarate/g (1.1 mg elemental Fe/g) or a control iodized salt. Participants’ blood iron status (primary outcomes) and cognitive functioning (secondary outcomes) were assessed at baseline and after 10 mo at endline. The study was performed on a tea plantation in the Darjeeling district of India. Participants (n = 126; 66% iron deficient and 49% anemic at baseline) were otherwise healthy women of reproductive age, 18–55 y. Results: Significant improvements were documented for iron status and for perceptual, attentional, and mnemonic function in the DFS group (percentage of variance accounted for: 16.5%) compared with the control group. In addition, the amount of change in perceptual and cognitive performance was significantly (P < 0.05) related to the amount of change in blood iron markers (mean percentage of variance accounted for: 16.0%) and baseline concentrations of blood iron markers (mean percentage of variance accounted for: 25.0%). Overall, there was evidence that the strongest effects of change in iron status were obtained for perceptual and low-level attentional function. Conclusion: DFS produced measurable and significant improvements in the perceptual, attentional, and mnemonic performance of Indian female tea pickers of reproductive age. The ability to effectively combine sensory inputs across modalities is vital for acquiring a unified percept of events. For example, watching a hammer hit a nail while simultaneously identifying the sound as originating from the event requires the ability to identify spatio-temporal congruencies and statistical regularities. In this study, we applied a reaction time and hazard function measure known as capacity (e.g., Townsend and AshbyCognitive Theory 200-239, 1978) to quantify the extent to which observers learn paired associations between simple auditory and visual patterns in a model theoretic manner. As expected, results showed that learning was associated with an increase in accuracy, but more significantly, an increase in capacity. The aim of this study was to associate capacity measures of multisensory learning, with neural based measures, namely mean global field power (GFP). We observed a co-variation between an increase in capacity, and a decrease in GFP amplitude as learning occurred. This suggests that capacity constitutes a reliable behavioral index of efficient energy expenditure in the neural domain.

Two of the most prominent strengths of the conjoined metatheory and methodology in systems factorial theory and the double-factorial paradigm (SFT/DFP) are its generality and its emphasis on strong-inference hypothesis testing. The intellectual history of SFT/DFP shows that these two strengths have been central to the evolution of this approach. We review that intellectual history by considering two critical predecessors—the parallel–serial testing paradigm, and the trichotomy method—and by briefly reviewing a range of studies that have applied the approach. We close by presenting a new application that illustrates and emphasizes the generality of DFT/DFP by showing how the approach can be used with the timing of neural events.

What factors contribute to redundant target processing speed besides statistical facilitation? one possibility is that multiple percepts may drive these effects. Another, although not mutually exclusive hypothesis, is that cross- channel cueing from one modality to another may influence response times. We implemented an auditory–visual detection task using the sound- induced flash illusion to examine whether one or both of these possibilities contributes to changes in processing speed; we did so by examining the data of individual participants. our results indicated shorter response times in several participants when multiple flashes were perceived in the standard sound- induced flash illusion, thereby replicating previous work in the literature. Additionally, we found evidence for faster responses in several participants when carrying out the same analysis in trials in which 1 beep was presented with 2 real flashes. overall, our analysis indicates that some observers benefit from cross- modal facilitation, whereas others may benefit from a combination of cross- modal facilitation and increased perceptual judgments.

Biofortification is the breeding of crops to increase their nutritional value, including increased contents of micronutrients or their precursors. Biofortification aims to increase nutrient levels in crops during plant growth rather than during processing of the crops into foods. Emerging research from 8 human trials conducted in the past decade with staple food crops that have been biofortified by traditional plant breeding methods were presented in this symposium. Specifically, data from 6 efficacy and 2 effectiveness trials were discussed to assess the effects of regular consumption of these enhanced staple crops on improving population vitamin A and iron status and reducing the burden of micronutrient deficiencies in targeted populations living in South Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, and Latin America. Biofortified food crops appear to have a positive impact on nutritional and functional health outcomes, as the results from the trials suggest. Additional implementation research will be needed to ensure maximization of the beneficial impact of this intervention and a smooth scaling up to make biofortification a sustainable intervention in public health. The challenge for the global health community remains how to take this efficacious intervention and implement at large scale in the real world.

The authors present a theory of stochastic interactive parallel processing with special emphasis on channel interactions and their relation to system capacity. The approach is based both on linear systems theory augmented with stochastic elements and decisional operators and on a metatheory of parallel channels' dependencies that incorporates standard independent and coactive parallel models as special cases. The metatheory is applied to OR and AND experimental paradigms, and the authors establish new theorems relating response time performance in these designs to earlier and novel issues. One notable outcome is the remarkable processing efficiency associated with linear parallel-channel systems that include mutually positive interactions. The results may offer insight into perceptual and cognitive configural-holistic processing systems.

Categorization and decision making are combined in a task with photorealistic faces. Two different types of face stimuli were assigned probabilistically into one of two fictitious groups; based on the category, faces were further probabilistically assigned to be hostile or friendly. In Part I, participants are asked to categorize a face into one of two categories, and to make a decision concerning interaction. A Markov model of categorization followed by decision making provides reasonable fits to Part I data. A Markov model predicting decision making followed by categorization is rejected. In Part II, a no-parameter model predicts decisions using categorization and decision responses collected in separate trials, suggesting that Part 1 results are not an artifact of the presentation of categorization and decision questions within a single trial. Decisions concerning interaction (defensive/friendly) appear to be based on information from the category decision, and not from the face stimuli alone.

Spatial frequency manipulations have been shown to have significant utility in ascertaining the various types of information that might be important in object identification and recognition tasks. This utility suggests that, given some mapping between ranges of spatial frequencies and different types of psychological information, it should be possible to examine the roles of these different types of psychological information by way of spatial frequency manipulations. One potential problem, however, is that there is no well-specified, unambiguous mapping between the distinctions in the frequency domain and the distinctions in the informational domain. Three experiments provide tests of three general hypotheses regarding the ways in which different spatial frequencies might map to different information in facial perception and memory tasks: (1) the low-frequency dominance hypothesis, which proposes that low-frequency information should be superior (to high-frequency information) as a cue to perception and memory; (2) the distinct informational roles hypothesis, which holds that high spatial frequencies should carry featural information while low spatial frequencies should carry information about the configuration of those features; and (3) the task-dependent information hypothesis, which suggests that high-frequency information should be best suited to discrimination tasks while low-frequency information should be best suited for recognition tasks. Results generally contradict the first two of these hypotheses, while providing support for the third. Implications with regard to the various issues related to the mapping between spatial frequencies and the informational content of faces, as well as the need to consider important interactions among perceptual and memory processes, are discussed.

Participants performed three feature-complete face processing tasks involving detection of changes in: (1) feature size and (2) feature identity in successive matching tasks, and (3) feature orientation. In each experiment, information in the top (eyes) and bottom (mouths) parts of faces were manipulated. All tasks were performed with upright and inverted faces. Data were analyzed first using group-based analysis of signal detection measures (sensitivity and bias), and second using analysis of multidimensional measures of sensitivity and bias along with probit regression models in order to draw inferences about independence and separability as defined within general recognition theory (Ashby and Townsend, 1986). The results highlighted different patterns of perceptual and decisional influences across tasks and orientations. There was evidence of orientation specific configural effects (violations of perceptual independence, perceptual separability and decisional separability) in the Feature Orientation Task. For the Feature Identity Task there were orientation specific performance effects and there was evidence of configural effects (violations of decisional separability) in both orientations. Decisional effects are consistent with previous research (Wenger and Ingvalson, 2002, 2003; Richler et al., 2008; Cornes et al., 2011). Technical communicators are faced daily with digesting the results of research reports; however, many technical communicators do not have the training that would facilitate their comprehension of such reports, particularly the sections of research reports that cite statistical terminology. This article addresses the need of technical communicators to become critical readers of empirical research. Specifically, we present simple definitions of selected research designs and statistical concepts and accompany these definitions with concrete examples related to the field of technical communication research.

While numerous studies have shown that prior knowledge and topic familiarity affect comprehension and usability of a text, few researchers account for readers’ topic familiarity in studies that investigate other reading comprehension variables. This research note briefly reviews the literature on the effect of prior knowledge and text familiarity on document comprehension and usability and discusses current methods for assessing subjects’ topic familiarity. An empirically based method for effectively assessing subjects’ topic familiarity is presented.

Contemporary theoretical accounts of perceptual learning typically assume that observers are either unbiased or stably biased across the course of learning. However, standard methods for estimating thresholds, as they are typically used, do not allow this assumption to be tested. We present an approach that allows for this test specific to perceptual learning for contrast detection. We show that reliable decreases in detection thresholds and increases in hit rates are not uniformly accompanied by reliable increases in sensitivity (d′), but are regularly accompanied by reliable liberal shifts in response criteria (c). In addition, we estimate the extent to which sensitivity could have increased in the absence of these liberal shifts. The results pose a challenge to the assumption that perceptual learning has limited or no impact on response criteria.

The specific processes that support comprehension and retention of hypertext information and the manner in which those processes differ from those involved in the comprehension and retention of traditional linear text were examined in 4 experiments. Experiments 1 and 2 demonstrate that although processing hypertext is not more demanding overall than processing linear text, processing hypertext does make more demands for use of relational information. Experiments 3 and 4 provide tests of the operational assumptions and methods used in the initial two experiments and provide converging evidence to support the notion that hypertext requires a different balance of processing resources than does linear text. Results and directions for research with new information technologies are discussed using the constructs of a limited-capacity working memory and material-appropriate processing.
