In winter, emissions from sources such as cars and cooking fires remain close to the ground, having a very negative impact on air quality and causing breathing difficulties in many of the city's residents. Officials are now beginning to address the environmental problems, but environmentalists have been critical of their approach. It is likely to be some time before a real improvement is seen.

New Delhi, India, has seen a significant rise in environmental problems over recent years, and is now the fourth most polluted city in the world. It has a particular problem with air pollution, which has been mainly caused by rising levels of car ownership. In 1996, 7,500 people died in New Delhi from diseases connected with air pollution, according to the World Health Organization. The problem is especially severe in New Delhi because it does not have a mass-transit system.
