Abstract

We are developing large size THick GEM (THGEM)-based detectors of single photons, mainly meant for Cherenkov imaging applications. The R&D programme includes the complete characterisation of the THGEM electron multipliers, the study of the aspects related to the detection of single photons and the engineering towards large size detector prototypes. Our most recent achievements include dedicated studies concerning the ion backflow to the photocathode; relevant progress in the engineering aspects, in particularly related to the production of large-size THGEMs, where the strict correlation between the local gain-value and the local thickness-value has been demonstrated and a 300×300 mm2 active area detector has been successfully operated at the CERN PS T10 test beam; the introduction of a new hybrid detector architecture, offering promising performance, which is formed by a THGEM layer which acts both as photocathode and pre-amplification device, followed by a MICROMEGAS (MM) multiplication stage. We report about the general status of the R&D programme and, in detail, about the recent progress.

Abstract

Cerium doped gadolinium pyrosilicate (GPS (Ce), Gd2Si2O7), which is a scintillator with a high light output, is a likely candidate to develop high-resolution radiation imaging detectors. Thus we fabricated a GPS (Ce) imaging detector using a single-crystal GPS (Ce) plate in combination with a position-sensitive photomultiplier tube (PSPMT). Through a performance evaluation, we found that the spatial resolution was ~ 0.5 mm FWHM for Am-241 α particles (5.5 MeV) with an energy resolution of 15% FWHM. The decay time difference of GPS (Ce) between 5.5 MeV α particles and 662 keV Cs-137 γ photons was 7 ns, which was insufficient to separate each image using pulse-shape discrimination. However, the α/γ ratio was large (0.35), so it was possible to separate 5.5 MeV α particles and 662 keV Cs-137 γ photons by the energy spectra. We conclude that the imaging detector using single-crystal GPS (Ce) is promising for radiation, especially for α particles.

Abstract

The novel and robust Thick GEM (THGEM) electron multiplier, coupled to a solid state photon converter, represents a promising option for instrumenting, at affordable costs, large areas with photon detectors, in particular, in Cherenkov imaging counters where single photons must be detected with high efficiency. The main goal of our project is to demonstrate the feasibility of reliable gaseous detector of single photons based on the use of THGEM multipliers, able to stably operate at high gain and high rate and to build and validate a large size prototype of such a detector. The project status and perspectives are reported; in particular attention is dedicated to the simulation and laboratory studies performed to understand the photo-electron extraction performance attainable using a solid state coated photo-cathode film onto a THGEM substrate.

Abstract

International audience; New photon detectors, based on the use of multi-anode photo-multiplier tubes coupled to individual lens telescopes and read out with a dedicated read-out electronics system, equip the central region of the Cherenkov imaging counter RICH-1 of the COMPASS experiment at CERN SPS. They are characterised by high photon yield, fast response and high rate capability and are successfully in operation since the 2006 COMPASS data taking. The photon detection system fully matches the expected performance. The design and construction of the photon detectors are described in detail.

Abstract

A fast photon detection system has been built as a part of the upgrade of the COMPASS RICH-1 detector: it is based on 576 multi-anode photomultiplier tubes (MAPMTs) coupled to individual fused silica lens telescopes and fast readout electronics. This system has replaced the MWPCs with CsI photo-cathodes in the central region ( 1.3 m 2 , 25% of the total area) of the COMPASS RICH-1 photon detectors and has successfully been operated during the data taking in 2006 and 2007. We report about the fast photon detection system design, construction and commissioning, in particular about the design optimization and the validation tests of the lens telescopes. Preliminary values for the increased performances of COMPASS RICH-1 after the upgrade are also presented.

Abstract

A fast readout system for the upgrade of the COMPASS RICH detector has been developed and successfully used for data taking in 2006 and 2007. The new readout system for the multi-anode PMTs in the central part of the photon detector of the RICH is based on the high-sensitivity MAD4 preamplifier-discriminator and the dead-time free F1-TDC chip characterized by high-resolution. The readout electronics has been designed taking into account the high photon flux in the central part of the detector and the requirement to run at high trigger rates of up to 100 kHz with negligible dead-time. The system is designed as a very compact setup and is mounted directly behind the multi-anode photomultipliers. The data are digitized on the frontend boards and transferred via optical links to the readout system. Abstract

We report about the development status of large area gaseous single photon detectors based on a novel hybrid concept for RICH applications. The hybrid concept combines Thick Gaseous Electron Multipliers (THGEMs) coupled to CsI, working as a photon sensitive pre-amplification stage, and Micromegas, as a multiplication stage. The most recent achievements within the research and development programme consist in the assembly and study of View the MathML source hybrid photon detectors, the optimization of front-end electronics, and engineering towards large area detectors. Hybrid detectors with an active area of View the MathML source have been successfully operated in laboratory conditions and at a CERN PS T10 test beam, achieving effective gains in the order of 105 and good time resolution (View the MathML source); APV25 front-end chips have been coupled to the detector resulting in noise levels lower than 1000 electrons; the production and characterization of View the MathML source THGEMs is ongoing. A set of hybrid detectors with View the MathML source active area is envisaged to upgrade COMPASS RICH-1 at CERN in 2016.

Abstract

Polarized reflection spectra of three crystalline modifications of titanium dioxide, rutile, anatase and brookite, were measured for the photon energy range of 2–25 eV using synchrotron orbital radiation. The difference in the spectral feature of the reflection bands is discussed on the basis of the modifications in crystal structure.

Abstract

The THicK GEM (THGEM) electron multipliers are derived from the GEM design, by scaling the geometrical parameters and changing the production technology. Small-size (a few cm(2)) detectors exhibit superb performance, while larger ones exhibit gain response and uniformity limitations. We have studied with a systematic approach several aspects concerning the material (type and thickness of the fibreglass plates) and the production procedure, in particular the cleaning and polishing stages. The net result is the production of large THGEM multipliers reproducing the performance of the small ones. We report in detail about the studies and the results.

Abstract

Recent progress in the development of THGEM-based photon detectors confirm the validity of this novel technology. Detectors made of THGEMs, arranged in a three layer architecture, with a CsI coating on the first layer (acting as a reflective photocathode), have been produced and operated in laboratory and during test beam runs: they provide a gain of 105 and a time resolution better than 10 ns. Improvements in the production of THGEMs with 300×300 mm2 active area have recently been introduced leading to a uniform gain response and performance similar to that provided by the small area THGEMs. Promising results have been obtained by combining THGEM and Micromegas technologies to form a hybrid MPGD-based photon detector: the first prototype has proved to stably operate at large gain in a variety of gas mixtures, including pure CH 4 and to provide a low ion backflow rate. The RICH-1 detector of the COMPASS Experiment at CERN SPS will be equipped with a set of MPGD-based photon detectors replacing MWPC-based ones.

Abstract

The RICH-1 detector of the COMPASS Experiment at CERN SPS is undergoing an important upgrade: four new Photon Detectors, based on MPGD technology and covering a total active area larger than 1.4 m2 will replace the MWPC-based photon detectors in order to cope with the challenging efficiency and stability requirements of the new COMPASS measurements. The new detector architecture consists in a hybrid MPGD combination: two layers of THGEMs, the first of which also acts as a reflective photocathode as it is coted with a CsI film, are coupled to a bulk Micromegas on a pad segmented anode; the signals are read-out via capacitive coupling by analog F-E based on the APV-25 chip. These detectors are the first application in an experiment of MPGD-based single photon detectors. All aspects of the COMPASS RICH-1 Photon Detectors upgrade are presented and large emphasis is dedicated to the engineering aspects, the mass production and the quality assessment of the MPGD components. The status of the detector commissioning is also presented.

Abstract

Photon detectors based on micropattern gas detectors represent a new generation of gaseous photon detectors. In the context of a project to upgrade the gas photon detectors of COMPASS RICH-I, we are performing an R&D programme aimed both to establish the principles and to develop the engineering aspects of photon detectors based on multi-layer arrangements of thick GEMs electron multipliers coupled to a CsI photoconverter. The major results of a four-year R&D study are recalled with emphasis to the most recent achievements.

Abstract

The photon detectors based on MPGD (MicroPattern Gaseous Detector) represent the new generation of gaseous photon detectors. We report about an R&D programme dedicated to study both the principles and the engineering aspects of photon detectors based on Thick GEMs (THGEM) electron multipliers coupled to a CsI photoconverting coating. The goal is the development of a gaseous detector of single UV photons, able to stably operate at high gain and high rate, to provide good time resolution and insensitive to magnetic field to be used in the Cherenkov imaging counter RICH-1 of the COMPASS experiment at CERN SPS.

International audience; RICH-1 is a large size RICH detector in operation at the COMPASS experiment since 2001 and recently upgraded implementing a new photon detection system with increased performance.A dedicated software package has been developed to perform RICH-1 data reduction, pattern recognition and particle identification as well as a number of accessory tasks for detector studies.The software package, the algorithms implemented and the detector characterisation and performance are reported in detail.

Abstract

The focusing system of the COMPASS RICH-1 detector consists of two segmented spherical mirror surfaces, formed by 68 hexagonal and 48 pentagonal individual elements. All individual mirrors have two degrees of freedom to adjust the angular alignment in order to obtain a continuous spherical surface. Relative angular misalignments can be monitored on-line by the CLAM method, based on the optical reconstruction of line images. Complementing the CLAM measurements with photogrammetry, the absolute mirror orientation and position in space can be determined too. The method is described, as well as the algorithms used to access the relative and absolute mirror alignment.

Abstract

COMPASS RICH-1 is a large size gaseous Imaging Cherenkov Detector providing hadron identification in the range from 3 to 55 GeV/c, in the wide acceptance spectrometer of the COMPASS Experiment at CERN SPS. It uses a 3 m long C(4)F(10) radiator, a 21 m(2) large VUV mirror surface and two kinds of photon detectors: MAPMTs and MWPCs with CsI photocathodes, covering a total of 5.5 m(2). It is in operation since 2002 and its performance has increased in time thanks to progressive optimization and mostly to a major upgrade which was implemented in 2006. The main characteristics of COMPASS RICH-1 components are described and some specific aspects related to the radiator gas system, the mirror alignment, the MWPC electrical stability and the readout electronics are discussed. Some key features of the event reconstruction and the PID analysis are presented together with results from the COMPASS RICH-1 performance characterization study. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. Abstract

We are developing a single photon detector for Cherenkov imaging counters. This detector is based on the use of THGEM electron multipliers in a multilayer design. The major goals of our project are ion feedback suppression down to a few per cent, large gain, fast response, insensitivity to magnetic fields, and a large detector size. We report about the project status and perspectives. In particular, we present a systematic study of the THGEM response as a function of geometrical parameters, production techniques and the gas mixture composition. Abstract

International audience; A new photon detection system for the COMPASS RICH-1 detector has been designed and installed. In the central region, the project is based on multi-anode photo-multiplier technology accompanied by charge sensitive, high resolution and dead-time free time digitization. In the outer area, only the readout electronics for the existing photon detectors has been replaced. Details on the detector upgrade and its performance are presented.

Abstract

RICH (Ring Imaging CHerenkov) counters for PID in the high momentum domain and in large acceptance experiments require photon detectors covering extended surface (several square meters) and able to accept Cherenkov photons in a wide angular range. An ideal approach is represented by gaseous photon detectors, which allow covering wide surfaces at affordable costs. The first generation of these detectors was based on the use of organic vapors. The second generation consists of CsI photocathodes and open geometry gaseous detectors (MWPC). In spite of the success of this approach, some limits of the technique arise from the bombardment of the photocathodes by the ions generated in the amplification process and by the photon feedback. A third generation of gaseous photon detectors using closed geometry, as those possible with multistage arrangements of micropattern gaseous detectors, can overcome the observed limitations. We have started an R&D programme to develop a Thick-GEM-based photon detector and we report about our initial studies. © 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved

Abstract

Terahertz generations were demonstrated in periodically poled lithium niobate and lithium tantalate crystals around 1-2 THz. Different forward and backward terahertz radiations are possible in periodically poled structures via difference frequency generation within the ultra-broad pump laser. The generated THz pulses could be controlled by the quasi-phase matching structures.

Abstract

COMPASS RICH-1 is a large size gaseous Cherenkov detector. Two reflecting spherical surfaces, covering a total area of about 21 m 2 hosted in the radiator vessel provide image focusing. The segmented surfaces are formed by 116 mirrors, with individual degrees of freedom for angular adjustment. An original method has been developed and applied for the on-line monitoring of the mirror alignment. Relative tilts between neighbouring mirror elements create discontinuities in the image of continuous lines reflected by the mirror wall. The measurement of the discontinuities can also provide information about the absolute tilt with a resolution of 0.1 mrad. An independent check and calibration of this method has been performed in laboratory using, as reference, a laser interferometer. We present the technical solutions adopted to implement the dedicated setup, the results of the method calibration by laser interferometer, and the preliminary results obtained measuring the alignment of the RICH-1 mirror wall.

A package for pattern recognition and PID by COMPASS RICH-1 has been developed and used for the analysis of COMPASS data collected in the years 2002 to 2004, and 2006-2007 with the upgraded RICH-1 photon detectors. It has allowed the full characterization of the detector in the starting version and in the upgraded one, as well as the PID for physics results. Abstract

A new read-out electronics system has been developed for the fast photon detection of the central region of the COMPASS RICH-1. The project is based on multi-anode photomultipliers read out by the high-sensitivity MAD4 preamplifier-discriminator and the dead-time free F1 TDC chip characterised by high time resolution. The system has been designed taking into account the high photon flux in the central region of the detector and the high rate requirement of the COMPASS experiment. The system is described in detail together with the measured performances. The new electronics system has been installed and used for the 2006 data taking; it entirely fulfils the expected performances.

Abstract

A major upgrade of the Cherenkov photon detection system of COMPASS RICH-1 has been performed and it has been in operation since the 2006 physics run. The inner part of the photon detector has been replaced by a different technology in order to measure Cherenkov photons at high photoelectron rates, up to several times 10 6 per second and per channel. Cherenkov photons from 200 to 750 nm are detected by 576 multianode photomultiplier tubes (MAPMTs) with 16 channels each, coupled to individual fused silica lens telescopes and fast, high sensitivity and high time resolution electronics read-out. To guarantee an optimal performance of the complete system, parameters like dark current, gain, uniformity, relative quantum efficiency have been measured for a totality of more than 600 MAPMTs (about 10 000 channels) in a fully automated test-stand, developed for this purpose. The ideal working point for each individual pixel could be ascertained by these measurements. In 2006 the newly equipped detector exhibited an excellent performance: about 56 detected photons per ring at saturation and a time resolution of better than 1 ns. We report about the MAPMT characterisation and the quality control set-up, protocol and results.

Abstract

In the context of a project to upgrade the gas photon detectors of COMPASS RICH-1, we have performed an R&D programme aimed to develop photon detectors based on multi-layer arrangements of thick GEM electron multipliers coupled to a CsI photoconverter. For this purpose, thick GEMs have been characterised in detail including the gain performance, its dependance on the geometrical parameters and its time-evolution, a feature exhibited by the gas detectors with open insulator surfaces. The variation due to this evolution drammatically depends on the parameters themselves. In the present article we summarise the outcomes of the studies dedicated to the thick GEM gain and its evolution versus time. We also include a qualitative model which accounts for the peculiar details of the observed thick GEM gain time-evolution.

Summary form only given. Recently, Kitamura et al. (1999) compared the electric fields required for ferroelectric domain reversal between the conventional congruent LiTaO/sub 3/ crystal (CLT) and a near-stoichiometric one (SLT) which was grown by a novel double crucible Czochralski method equipped with an automatic powder supply system. It was found that the electric field for domain switching in SLT was decreased to be less than 1.7 kV/mm. This value is about one thirteenth of that for the conventional CLT. Summary form only given.In recent years there has been increasing interest in the use of quasi-phase-matched periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) for a variety of frequency conversion applications. We investigate the influence of of MgO doping on the green-induced infrared absorption, photorefraction, and ferroelectric domain nature in near stoichiometric LiNbO/sub 3/, and MgO doped near-stoichiometric LiNbO/sub 3/ are expected to show much improved nonlinear properties since they have considerably reduced photorefraction, and ferroelectric domain switching compared to congruent crystals.

Abstract

Recent progress in the development of THGEM-based photon detectors confirm the validity of this novel technology. Detectors made of THGEMs, arranged in a three layer architecture, with a CsI coating on the first layer (acting as a reflective photocathode), have been produced and operated in laboratory and during test beam runs: they provide a gain of 105 and a time resolution better than 10 ns. Improvements in the production of THGEMs with 300 ? 300 mm2 active area have recently been introduced leading to a uniform gain response and performance similar to that provided by the small area THGEMs. Promising results have been obtained by combining THGEM and Micromegas technologies to form a hybrid MPGD-based photon detector: the first prototype has proved to stably operate at large gain in a variety of gas mixtures, including pure CH4 and to provide a low ion backflow rate. The RICH-1 detector of the COMPASS Experiment at CERN SPS will be equipped with a set of MPGD-based photon detectors replacing MWPC-based ones.

Abstract

Photon detectors based on micropattern gas detectors represent a new generation of gaseous photon detectors. In the context of a project to upgrade the gas photon detectors of COMPASS RICH-1, we are performing an R&D programme aimed both to establish the principles and to develop the engineering aspects of photon detectors based on multi-layer arrangements of thick GEMs electron multipliers coupled to a CsI photoconverter. In this context, a reduced rate of the backflow of the positive ions generated in the multiplication process is required to overcome the critical issues related to the bombardment of the CsI photoconverter by ions. Our studies devoted to develop detector architectures able to provide reduced ion backflow rates are reported.

Abstract

The development of a large size gaseous detector of single photons, able to stably operate at high gain and high rate, and to provide good time resolution and insensitivity to magnetic field would be beneficial to future Cherenkov Imaging Counters. The detector could be based on the use of a multilayer architecture of THGEM electron multipliers coupled to a solid state CsI photocathode. A systematic study of the response of THGEM-based counters versus the geometrical parameters has been performed and the main results will be presented. Small photon detector prototypes have been built and preliminary data obtained detecting single photoelectrons are presented as well. The key aspect of photoelectron extraction from the photocathode is illustrated presenting both simulation and dedicated measurement results. © 2010 IOP Publishing Ltd and SISSA

Abstract

Forward and counterpropagated backward terahertz generations were demonstrated via difference frequency generation using a femtosecond laser. By cooling the crystal to reduce terahertz losses, we achieved the terahertz generations of 1.36 and 0.65THz. Temperature-dependent measurements showed gradual intensity increase of the terahertz pulse and red shift of the center frequency as the temperature decrease from 255to143K, although there were insignificant decreases of the spectral bandwidth.

Abstract

Cherenkov imaging counters requiring large photosensitive areas, the capability to stand high rates and to operate in magnetic field environments could benefit from the use of micropattern gas detectors based on THick Gaseous Electron Multiplier (THGEM) coupled to a solid state CsI photo-cathode. Nevertheless, the ions produced in the charge multiplication processes, which end up in the CsI photocathode Ion Back Flow (IBF) compromise the detector performance: fast ageing of the CsI photocathode, as well as electron extraction resulting in spurious signals and eventual discharges can occur. To avoid and limit these undesired events, several configurations of THGEM based detectors were considered. Some changing the whole detector geometry by changing the relative position of individual THGEMs to take advantage of the microscopic diffusion properties of electrons and ions. One other configuration changing directly the geometry of the THGEM itself to better create an ion trap, the THCOBRA, is also studied. In this work, experimental and simulation studies of these configurations is performed, particularly concerning IBF and gain. Finite element method calculations and Monte-Carlo simulations are performed for a better understanding of the results.
