Background and Aims The risk scores used in Critical Care Units estimate the severity and mortality of patients. The SAPS (Simplified Acute Physiologic Score) and its SAPS II and SAPS III variants calculate the severity by collecting the values recorded in the first 24 hours. The EPTS (Estimated Post-Transplant-Survival) is used as a reference for the allocation of organs in the US by the OPTN. The objective is to determine its use in recent renal transplant units as estimator of subsequent renal function, in services where patients move from the operating room to a nephrological intermediate care unit. Method The SAPS (II and III) and OPTN scores were applied in 87 (N = 87) consecutive renal transplanted patients. The point value of each of the scales was evaluated with the creatinine values at hospital discharge, and one month after the transplant. The scores obtained on the SAPS scales were divided as follows (SAPSIIA 20%), (Score 40%; EPTS-IIA ≤40%, EPTS -IIB> 40). The sérum creatinine means of each of the groups were compared. Data were analyzed with SPSS 20.0.0 Results Significant differences were found in serum creatinine levels in renal function at the first month of transplantation in the SAPS II groups (SAPS IIA 1.38 mg / dl, SAPS IIB 1.79 mg / dl; P = 0.017 95% CI). With an area under the ROC curve of 0.65 (P = 0.017 95% CI). In the SAPS III groups no significant differences were found. In the EPTS scales, there were also significant differences in creatinine one month after the transplant in the group with a score of 40% (EPTS-IIA ≤40% 1.42 mg / dl, EPTS-IIB> 40 1.81 mg / dl; P = 0.024 95% CI) With an Area under the ROC curve of 0.64 (P = 0.037 95% CI). Conclusion The SAPSII and EPTS scores can be a useful tool in estimating renal function one month after renal transplantation, giving a prognosis of renal graft function. The combined use of these scales together with other functional graft tests could have an important relevance in the management and follow-up of recent renal transplantation. Other studies with larger sample sizes are necessary to establish the appropriate cut-off points for the scales.

Background and Aims Acute tubular necrosis is a common complication after kidney transplantation and is closely related to delayed graft function (DGF) and slower graft function recovery after surgery. The furosemide stress test (FST) uses a standardized dose of furosemide to evaluate the integrity of the renal tubule and determine which patients have developed severe tubular damage. We aimed to apply the FST to a sample of incident deceased-donor kidney transplant recipients and describe its association with DGF and serum creatinine (SCr) at discharge. Method Single-center prospective observational study of deceased-donor kidney transplant recipients. The FST, a standardized bolus dose of furosemide (1.5 mg/kg) was administered between the 3rd and 5th day after surgery. Patients were excluded if, during that time period, they presented evidence of active bleeding, obstructive uropathy or volume depletion. Urine output (UO) 60 and 120 min after FST was registered. To reduce the risk of hypovolemia, each ml of UO produced for six hours after FST was replaced with 1 ml of normal saline. Results 25 patients were included in the study. Mean 2h FST UO was 1012±570 ml. Demographic and clinical data are summarized in Table 1. Subjects that suffered DGF had a significantly lower 2h FST UO (534 vs 1164 ml; P=0.015). We present 3 cases of patients with castration-resistant prostate cancer and bone metastases treated with Ra, belonging to our prospective and multicenter ChoPET-Rad study. All patients underwent clinical, hematological, and biochemical monitoring between each Ra administration. Initial and follow-up F-fluorocholine PET/CT and Tc-biphosphonate bone scintigraphy were performed previously and after the third Ra administration. Both techniques correctly established the response to treatment, in agreement to the biochemical response, although differences in the disease expression (concordant and discordant patterns) were found because of the different radiotracer biodistribution and molecular information derived from them.

They haveattracted much attention in optics and photonics, and especially inmetasurfaces, that is, planar arrays of sub-wavelength meta-atoms. One oftheir most outstanding features is the arbitrarily large Q-factors they induceupon approaching the BIC condition, which is exploited here to achieve anarrow transparency band. It is first shown how to shift a canonical BIC in anall-dielectric metasurface, consisting of high-refractive disks exhibiting in- andout-of-plane magnetic dipole (MD) resonances, by tuning the periodicity ofthe array. By means of the coupled electric/magnetic dipole formulation, it isshown analytically that when the quasi-BIC overlaps with the broad (in-planeMD) resonance, a full transparency band emerges with diverging Q-factorupon approaching the BIC condition in parameter space. Finally, theexperimental measurements in the microwave regime with a large array ofhigh-refractive-index disks confirm the theoretical predictions. Looking forward includes looking back every now and then. In 2007, David Weller looked back at 30 years of biocontrol of soil-borne pathogens by Pseudomonas and signified that the progress made over decades of research has provided a firm foundation to formulate current and future research questions. It has been recognized for more than a century that soil-borne microbes play a significant role in plant growth and health. The recent application of high-throughput omics technologies has enabled detailed dissection of the microbial players and molecular mechanisms involved in the complex interactions in plant-associated microbiomes. Here, we highlight old and emerging plant microbiome concepts related to plant disease control, and address perspectives that modern and emerging microbiomics technologies can bring to functionally characterize and exploit plant-associated microbiomes for the benefit of plant health in future microbiome-assisted agriculture.

OBJECTIVE: In an admixed population of older Cubans, the incidence and association of APOE and socio demographic risk factors with dementia incidence was estimated. METHODS: A single-phase survey (baseline) of all over 65-year-olds residing in seven catchment areas in Cuba (n=2944) was conducted between 2003 and 2007. Dementia diagnosis was established according to DSM-IV and 10/66 criteria. APOE genotype was determined in 2520 participants. An incidence wave was conducted 4.5 years after cohort inception in order to estimate incidence and associations with sociodemographic risk factors of the APOE ε4 genotype. RESULTS: The incidence rate of DSM IV dementia was 9.0 per 1000 person-years (95% CI 7.2-11.3) and of 10/66 dementia was 20.5 per 1000 person-years (95% CI, 17.6-23.5). Older age, a family history of dementia and APOE ε4 genotype were independent risk factors for incident 10/66 dementia. APOE genotype was associated cross-sectionally with dementia prevalence, but the effect on the incidence of dementia was attenuated, and only apparent among those in the youngest age group. CONCLUSION: The incidence of dementia in the older Cuban population is relatively high and similar to levels reported in Europe and North-America. The study showed that the relationship between APOE ε4 and incident dementia is stronger in the younger-old than the older-old and that this change must be taken into account in models of dementia. MÉTODOS: Realizamos uma pesquisa de uma fase (linha de base) de todos os idosos com mais de 65 anos residentes em sete áreas de Cuba (n=2944), de 2003 a 2007. O diagnóstico de demência foi estabelecido de acordo com os critérios do DSM-IV e do 10/66. O genótipo APOE foi determinado em 2520 participantes. Avaliação da incidência foi conduzida 4,5 anos após a linha de base, a fim de estimar a incidência e associações com fatores de risco sociodemográficos e o genótipo APOE ε4. RESULTADOS: A taxa de incidência de demência foi de 9,0 por 1000 pessoas-ano (IC 95% 7,2-11,3) de acordo com o DSM-IV e de 20,5 por 1000 pessoas-ano (IC 95%, 17,6-23,5) de acordo com o 10/66. Idade avançada, história familiar de demência e genótipo APOE ε4 foram fatores de risco independentes para a incidência de demência de acordo com os critérios do 10/66. O genótipo APOE foi associado com a prevalência de demência em estudo transversal, mas o efeito sobre a incidência de demência foi atenuado, e apenas aparente entre aqueles na faixa etária mais jovem. CONCLUSÃO: A incidência de demência na população cubana mais velha é relativamente alta, semelhante às relatadas na Europa e América do Norte. O estudo mostra que a relação entre APOE ε4 incidente e demência é mais forte entre os idosos mais jovens e que esta alteração deve de ser considerada em modelos de demência.

Photoluminescence from finite semiconductor nanowires is theoretically investigated. We show experimentally the directional emission of polarized light from single InP nanowires through Fourier microphotoluminescence, thus demonstrating semiconductor nanowires behave as efficient optical nanoantennas. Numerical calculations for finite nanowires confirm such enhanced and directional emission. We anticipate the relevance of these results for the development of nanowire photon sources with optimized efficiency and controlled emission.

Background In the last few years, new drugs (boceprevir and telaprevir) have been approved for treatment of chronic hepatitis C (HCV) genotype 1 infection. Triple Therapy (TT) (boceprevir or telaprevir + peginterferon + ribavirin) has proved to be more effective than dual therapy (peginterferon + ribavirin), but TT is associated with high rates of adverse events (AEs), mainly cutaneous and haematological events, which can affect adherence to treatment. Purpose To study the frequency of cutaneous and haematological AEs in patients treated for HCV in our hospital. Material and methods Retrospective observational study in which the authors collected cutaneous and haematological AEs reported by all HCV patients between January 2013 and April 2014. The CTCAE V 4.0 scale was used to evaluate the severity of AEs. Results 30 patients received HCV treatment, 18 men and 12 women. The average age was 46.5 ± 8.4 years. 13 (43.3%) were treated with TT: 6 with telaprevir and 7 with boceprevir. 15 patients (50%) had anaemia (7 with TT), which became grade 2 ( Conclusion The frequency of observed cutaneous and haematological AEs in our study fits our expectations in the light of the published studies. Considering the higher cost of these treatments and the higher risk of non-adherence due to their AEs, pharmacotherapy follow-up on these patients is essential.
