Emerging evidence suggests that KIF11 could play a pivotal role in cancer cell proliferation; however, its biological functions and molecular mechanisms in Wilms tumor (WT) cells are largely unknown. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical significance and therapeutic potential of KIF11 proteins in WT. KIF11 expression in WT tissues and adjacent nontumor tissues was determined using qRT-PCR, Western blotting, immunohistochemistry (IHC) and bioinformatics. The function of KIF11 protein was determined by its correlation with tumor cell growth, angiogenesis, and apoptosis using IHC and lentiviral vector-mediated KIF11 depletion. KIF11 expression was upregulated in WT tissues and was associated with WT clinical outcomes. Tumor KIF11 expression was significantly associated with the Ki67 proliferation index. CCK-8, flow-cytometric analysis, and Western blotting revealed that KIF11 knockdown significantly inhibited WT cell growth. Functional studies have indicated that increased KIF11 expression is significantly correlated with vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression and intratumoral microvessel density. We further confirmed that downregulated expression of KIF11 promoted cell apoptosis and significantly increased Bcl-2 and Bax expression. Our findings demonstrate that KIF11 plays a role in promoting the development of human WT and can serve as a potential molecular marker for the treatment of WT.

This study explores the association between life satisfaction and depression among patients with cardiovascular diseases and whether this association is mediated by self-esteem. A cross-sectional study was conducted in a third-grade hospital. We examined 300 patients with cardiovascular diseases with a mean age of 62.00 years (females, 133). Life satisfaction was associated with depression. Adding self-esteem to the model weakened the strength of the association between the two. Moreover, 34.2% of the effect of life satisfaction on depression could be explained by self-esteem. We found that self-esteem could totally explain the effect of life satisfaction on depression among patients with cardiovascular diseases.

Background Most previous studies focused on the associations of depression and anxiety with Internet addiction (IA) have used variable-centered approaches. This study aims to explore the distinct developmental trajectories of depression and anxiety, and their association with IA based on person-centered approaches. Methods A total of 437 Chinese high school freshmen at the baseline were followed across one year. Latent class growth analysis (LCGA) and growth mixture modeling (GMM) were used to identify the heterogeneity of individual trajectories of depression and anxiety. Results For depression, there were three distinct trajectories identified, namely, the escalating group (n=60, 13.7%), recovery group (n=31, 7.1%), and the low-stable group (n=346, 79.2%). For anxiety, the subgroups consisted of the escalating group (n=50, 11.4%), the recovery group (n=34, 7.8%), and the low-stable group (n=353, 80.8%). The probability of IA in the depression low-stable group was significantly smaller compared to those in either the recovery group (χ2=10.794, P=0.001) or the escalating group (χ2=19.314, P Limitations The sample was limited to students from one specific high school and had a one-year follow-up. Conclusions The findings of the study suggest the necessity of early prevention and intervention strategies for those students with depression and anxiety, which are at elevated risk of developing IA.

Indoleamine 2, 3-dioxygenase 1 (IDO1) has been implicated in the pathogenesis of depression, though its molecular mechanism is still poorly understood. We investigated the molecular mechanism of IDO1 in depression by using the chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) model in Ido1-/- mice and WT mice. The brain blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) signals in mice were collected by functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) technology. IDO1 inhibitor INCB024360 was intervened in dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN) through stereotactic injection. We found an elevation of serum IDO1 activity and decreased 5-HT in CUMS mice, and the serum IDO1 activity was negatively correlated with 5-HT level. Consistently, IDO1 was increased in hippocampus and DRN regions, accompanied by a reduction of hippocampal BDNF levels in mice with CUMS. Specifically, pharmacological inhibition of IDO1 activity in the DRN alleviated depressive-like behaviour with improving hippocampal BDNF expression and neurogenesis in CUMS mice. Furthermore, ablation of Ido1 exerted stress resistance and decreased the sensitivity of depression in CUMS mice with the stable BOLD signals, BDNF expression and neurogenesis in hippocampus. Thus, IDO1 hyperactivity played crucial roles in modulating 5-HT metabolism and BDNF function thereby impacting outcomes of hippocampal neurogenesis and BOLD signals in depressive disorder.

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is one of the most common peripheral vestibular diseases. Since the peripheral vestibular system connects with the cerebellum via the brainstem, repeated episodic vertigo may result in progressive structural and functional changes in the cerebellum and brainstem. In the present work, voxel-based morphometry (VBM) of T1-weighted images and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in 32 patients with BPPV and 32 matched healthy controls were used to assess cerebellar and brainstem anatomical and spontaneous resting-state brain activity alterations associated with BPPV. We used a spatially unbiased infratentorial template toolbox in combination with VBM to analyze cerebellar and brainstem gray matter volume (GMV), fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (fALFF), and regional homogeneity (ReHo). Patients with BPPV showed decreased GMV in the right cerebellum posterior lobe/cerebellar tonsil extending to the cerebellum anterior lobe and pons relative to healthy controls. BPPV patients also exhibited significantly higher fALFF values in the right pons and left pons and higher ReHo values in the left cerebellum posterior lobe/Crus2 than the controls. Furthermore, the fALFF z-scores in the pons were positively correlated with the duration of vertigo at baseline and dizziness visual analog scale scores 1 week after canalith repositioning procedures (CRPs). BPPV patients exhibited structural and functional changes in the cerebellum and pons, which may reflect the adaptation and plasticity of these anatomical structures after repeated attacks of episodic vertigo. These results indicate that the changes in pons function may be closely related to residual dizziness after CRPs.

The present study aimed to determine the mediating effects of depression and anxiety on the association between life satisfaction and quality of life. We used the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD-7), and EuroQol Five Dimensions Questionnaire (EQ-5D) to measure depression, anxiety, and quality of life, respectively. A single question was used to measure the life satisfaction of participants. Life satisfaction was significantly related with depression ( r = −0.17), anxiety ( r = −0.18), and quality of life ( r = 0.19). Depression and anxiety were also related to quality of life. Depression and anxiety had full mediating effects (β = −0.274; β = −0.208) on the association between life satisfaction and quality of life. For those with poor life satisfaction, people were more likely to have high level of depression and anxiety, which in turn experienced poor quality of life.

Background Real-time temperature monitoring during cold chain logistics is critical because refrigerated foods are sensitive to temperature fluctuations. Time-temperature indicators (TTIs) are effective tools for monitoring the temperature history of food products in real-time. These technologies have been widely used in fresh food management, showing great potential to reduce food waste, ensure food safety, and achieve realistic control of the cold chain and cold storage of foods. Scope and approach This review presents commonly used modelling methods for TTIs establishment, including reaction rate constant (k) and activation energy (Ea) determination and Ea matching. Through mathematical modelling, shelf-life of TTIs can be matched with shelf-life of target foods, making response changes of TTIs reflect food quality. For the first time, different apparent response types of TTIs are summarized, covering colour-based, acidity-based, diffusion length-based, and other responses-based TTIs. Besides, TTIs applications in cold chain management of fresh foods are also highlighted concerning dairy, meat and aquatic products, and vegetables. Key findings and conclusions TTIs are effective temperature-sensitive monitoring tools and have been studied for monitoring various refrigerated fresh food products, especially for meat and aquatic products. Arrhenius equation is the most widely used mathematical modelling for matching kinetics of the food products and the TTI responses. Colour-based responses increasingly become the most popular response types of TTIs for the advantages of convenient and direct observation. The future trends of TTIs development should mainly focus on the integration of multiple quality indicators, constituent simplification, cost reduction, and modelling optimization.

To develop and identify a MRI-based radiomics nomogram for the preoperative prediction of parametrial invasion (PMI) in patients with early-stage cervical cancer (ECC). All 137 patients with ECC (FIGO stages IB–IIA) underwent T2WI and DWI scans before radical hysterectomy surgery. The radiomics signatures were calculated with the radiomics features which were extracted from T2WI and DWI and selected by the least absolute shrinkage and selection operation regression. The support vector machine (SVM) models were built using radiomics signatures derived from T2WI and joint T2WI and DWI respectively to evaluate the performance of radiomics signatures for distinguishing patients with PMI. A radiomics nomogram was drawn based on the radiomics signatures with a better performance, patient’s age, and pathological grade; its discrimination and calibration performances were estimated. For T2WI and joint T2WI and DWI, the radiomics signatures yielded an AUC of 0.797 (95% CI, 0.682–0.911) vs 0.946 (95% CI, 0.899–0.994), and 0.780 (95% CI, 0.641–0.920) vs 0.921 (95% CI, 0.832–1) respectively in the primary and validation cohorts. The radiomics nomogram, integrating the radiomics signatures from joint T2WI and DWI, patient’s age, and pathological grade, showed excellent discrimination, with C-index values of 0.969 (95% CI, 0.933–1) and 0.941 (95% CI, 0.868–1) in the primary and validation cohorts, respectively. The calibration curve showed a good agreement. The radiomics nomogram performed well for the preoperative prediction of PMI in patients with ECC and may be used as a supplementary tool to provide individualized treatment plans for patients with ECC. • No previously reported study that has utilized radiomics nomogram to preoperatively predict PMI for patients with ECC. • Radiomics model involves radiomics features extracted from joint T2WI and DWI which characterize the heterogeneity between tumors in patients with ECC. • Radiomics nomogram can assist clinicians with individualized treatment decision-making for patients with ECC.

To evaluate the association between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the complement factor H (CFH) gene and response to PDT in patients with CSC. 103 eyes from 93 patients with CSC were enrolled from Department of Ophthalmology of the People’s Hospital Peking University. Genotyping for selected SNPs in the CFH gene was performed, and multivariate linear analysis was used to identify factors influencing PDT treatment outcomes. Genetics associations between SNPs in the CFH gene and response to PDT in patients with CSC were analyzed. None of the seven SNPs examined in this study (rs800292, rs1061170, rs3753394, rs3753396, rs2284664, rs1329428, and rs1065489) showed significant associations with 1-month outcomes after PDT in patients with CSC (P > 0.05). Background Ovarian stimulation with clomiphene (CC) or progestin has been applied for patients with diminished ovarian reserve (DOR). However, it remains unclear which treatment confers greater benefits. This study aimed to compare the outcomes of progestin-primed ovarian stimulation (PPOS) protocol vs CC-primed ovarian stimulation (CPOS) in infertile women with DOR. Methods A before-and-after self-controlled study was conducted to retrospectively investigate the data from 50 infertile women with DOR, who failed to conceive in their first in vitro fertilization/intracytoplasmic sperm injection-frozen embryo transfer cycle when stimulated with CPOS, and switched to PPOS, in the Reproductive Medicine Center of Changzhou Maternal and Child Health Care Hospital. Results Our results showed that PPOS significantly suppressed the luteinizing hormone (LH) surge and yielded more satisfactory results in patients with DOR, including increased number of retrieved oocytes, MII mature oocytes, normal fertilized oocytes, cleaved embryos, high-grade embryos, cryopreserved embryos, pregnancy rate, live-birth rate, and decreased miscarriage rates. Conclusion Our study demonstrated that compared with CPOS protocol, PPOS protocol could not only suppress the LH surge but also improved the quantity, particularly the quality of oocytes in patients with DOR, suggesting that PPOS treatment is more effective than CPOS for patients with DOR.

Objective: Depression is an disease that seriously endangers the physical and mental health of human body. However, in view of the limitation of existing antidepressants, it's urgent to find new antidepressants from natural products. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of Paecilomyces tenuipes, which is an important entomogenous fungus in China. Methods: This research was intent to investigate the antidepressant actions of P. tenuipes M98 extracts using a battery of behavioural models including tail suspension test (TST) and forced swimming test (FST), 5-HTP-induced head twitch response and chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) in mice. Results: Fifteen days treatment with aqueous and ethanol extracts signifificantly decreased the duration of immobility in TST and FST, without signifificant changes in locomotor activity. Moreover, chronic application of extracts for 21 days signifificantly improved the depressive-like behaviours of CUMS mice, including reduced body weight and sucrose preference and lengthened immobility time in TST and FST. In addition, extracts produced a signifificant increase in 5-hydroxytryptamine and dopamine, but not noradrenaline, levels in hypothalamus. These fifindings suggested that this action of P. tenuipes might be related to the regulation of serotonergic and dopaminergic systems, which were further confirmed via 5-HTP induced head-twitch test. In addition, P. tenuipes M98 extracts also displayed anti-oxidative effffects. Conclusion: P. tenuipes M98 extracts present excellent antidepressant-like activities, which might be explained by regulation of neurotransmitters and alleviation of oxidative stress.

Summary The kinetics and capacity mismatches between anode and cathode for the Na/K-ion hybrid capacitors (NIHC and KIHC) greatly hamper their overall performance output. Herein, we construct NIHC and KIHC using multilayer tungsten sulfide nanosheets anchored with nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheets (WS2@NCNs) composite as anode and hierarchical nitrogen-doped carbon hollow nanospheres (NCHS) as cathode. The strongly coupled sheet-on-sheet nanostructure of the anode can facilitate electron transport and alleviate volume change. In particular, the WS2-NCNs interface offers a more feasible channel for fast ion intercalation and deintercalation, which can improve kinetics. The hierarchical NCHS cathode provides numerous accessible active sites for reversible anion adsorption and desorption, dramatically enhancing the specific capacity. Consequently, due to the enhanced anode and cathode compatibility, the assembled NIHC and KIHC can deliver high energy densities of 134.7 and 103.4 Wh kg−1 at 117.5 and 235 W kg−1, respectively. Our electrode design strategy could offer guidance for the development of high-performance hybrid capacitors.

More and more evidence show that major depressive disorder (MDD) is closely related to inflammation caused by chronic stress, which seriously affects human physical and mental health. However, the inflammatory mechanism of depression and its effect on brain function have not been clarified. Based on resting‐state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs‐fMRI), we investigated change of brain functional imaging and the inflammatory mechanism of damage‐related molecular patterns (DAMPs)—receptor of advanced glycation protein end product (RAGE) in MDD patients and depressive‐like cynomolgus monkeys and mice models induced by chronic stress. The regional homogeneity (ReHo) and functional connectivity (FC) were analyzed using MATLAB and SPM12 software. We detected the expression of DAMPs‐RAGE pathway‐related proteins and mRNA in MDD peripheral blood and in serum and brain tissue of cynomolgus monkeys and mice. Meanwhile, RAGE gene knockout mice, RAGE inhibitor, and overexpression of AVV9RAGE adeno‐associated virus were used to verify that RAGE is a reliable potential biomarker of depression. The results showed that the ReHo value of prefrontal cortex (PFC) in MDD patients and depressive‐like cynomolgus monkeys was decreased. Then, the PFC was used as a seed point, the FC of ipsilateral and contralateral PFC were weakened in depressive‐like mice. At the same time, qPCR showed that RAGE and HMGB1 mRNA were upregulated and S100β mRNA was downregulated. The expression of RAGE‐related inflammatory protein in PFC of depressive‐like monkeys and mice were consistent with that in peripheral blood of MDD patients. Moreover, the results were confirmed in RAGE –/– mice, injection of FPS‐ZM1, and overexpression of AAV9 RAGE in mice. To sum up, our findings enhance the evidence that chronic stress‐PFC‐RAGE are associated with depression. These results attempt to establish the links between brain functional imaging, and molecular targets among different species will help to reveal the pathophysiological mechanism of depression from multiple perspectives., The regional homogeneity value in prefrontal cortex (PFC) of MDD patients and depressive‐like monkeys were decreased and related to the upregulation of RAGE in peripheral or PFC.RAGE is essential for the susceptibility of chronic stress to depression via regulating the functional connectivity of PFC in mice.Overexpression or knockout/inhibition of RAGE in PFC can regulate depressive‐like behavior in mice.

Objectives In this study, we administered immunity‐and‐matrix regulatory cells (IMRCs) via tail vein (IV) and intracerebroventricular (ICV) injection to 3‐month‐old 5×FAD transgenic mice to assess the effects of IMRC transplantation on the behaviour and pathology of early‐stage Alzheimer's disease (AD). Materials and methods Clinical‐grade human embryonic stem cell (hESC)‐derived IMRCs were produced under good manufacturing practice (GMP) conditions. Three‐month‐old 5×FAD mice were administered IMRCs via IV and ICV injection. After 3 months, the mice were subjected to behavioural tests and electrophysiological analysis to evaluate their cognitive function, memory ability and synaptic plasticity. The effect of IMRCs on amyloid‐beta (Aβ)‐related pathology was detected by thioflavin‐S staining and Western blot. Quantitative real‐time PCR, ELISA and immunostaining were used to confirm that IMRCs inhibit neuroinflammation. RNA‐seq analysis was performed to measure changes in gene expression and perform a pathway analysis in response to IMRC treatment. Results IMRC administration via tail vein injection significantly ameliorated cognitive deficits in early‐stage AD (5×FAD) mice. However, no significant change was observed in the characteristic pathology of AD in the ICV group. Plaque analysis revealed that IMRCs did not influence either plaque deposition or BACE1 expression. In addition, IMRCs inhibited inflammatory responses and reduced microglial activation in vivo. Conclusions We have shown that peripheral administration of IMRCs can ameliorate AD pathology and associated cognitive deficits., Clinical‐grade human embryonic stem cell (hESC)‐derived immunity‐and matrix‐regulatory cells (IMRCs) alleviate cognitive symptoms of early‐stage AD mice by anti‐inflammatory effects in the peripheral system.

Synapse is one of the main elements of hardware implementation in a neuron network. Complex CMOS technology-based circuits using various Si-based transistors, non-Si based memory devices like RRAM, and 2D FET devices serve as hardware implement for neuron network. In this work, we demonstrate ambipolar MoTe 2 FET devices with a wide range oftunability in synaptic characteristic and classical paired pulsed facilitation as well as spike-timing-dependent plasticity function.

The Environmental burden of disease (EBD) quantitatively evaluates the health impacts of pathogens by using the disability-adjusted life year (DALY) method. The life loss due to morbidity is a general expression for the EBD outcome and, thus, morbidity analysis is indispensable. Considering the deficiency of previous morbidity analysis methods, the objective of this study was to construct a linear morbidity model by using a generalized linear model (GLM) as a template and introducing exposure dose, pathogen toxicity and human immunity as impact variables. Human experimental data were collected for model fitting, and the results indicated a good fit of the majority of the pathogen data. Consequently, two practical cases of water reuse in Xi'an Siyuan University (Case 1) and Lake Cui, Kunming (Case 2) were selected for model validation. Results for case 1 indicated the major EBD to be attributed to rotaviruses (5.57 × 10−7 DALYs, 95% confidence interval (CI): 4.46 × 10−7-1.72 × 10−4 DALYs) and sprinkling irrigation (5.12 × 10−7 DALYs, 95% CI: 1.95 × 10−7-1.47 × 101 DALYs). Conversely, that for case 2 is mainly attributed to noroviruses (1.42 × 10−7 DALYs, 95% CI: 7.51 × 10−11-2.67 × 10−4 DALYs) and road flushing (1.62 × 10−7 DALYs, 95% CI: 1.16 × 10−7-2.67 × 10−4 DALYs). However, comparison with the suggested threshold of 10−6 DALYs indicated the EBDs for both cases are acceptable and, thus, water reuse is confirmed to be safe. The methodology for morbidity modelling proposed in this research can effectively compensate for missing data in DALY calculation and, thereby, help to optimize the process for EBD evaluation.

Purpose To explore the mediating effect of school interest and maladaptive cognitions in the relationship between stress and Internet addiction. Design and methods A total of 2271 high school students were recruited from a Chinese high school. Serial mediation model was used. Results School interest and maladaptive cognitions had 0.03 and 0.13 indirect effects in the association between stress and Internet addiction, and accounting for 7.9% and 34.2% of the total effect, respectively. The serial indirect effect of school interest and maladaptive cognition was 0.05, accounting for 13.2% of the total effect. Practice implications The present study highlights the need of reducing stress and increasing school interest among high school students to prevent and intervene the occurrence of Internet addiction.

OBJECTIVE This study aims to examine the parallel multiple mediators of depressive symptoms and sleep quality in the relations between stress and physical health-related quality of life (PHQOL)/mental health-related quality of life (MHQOL) among the women in late pregnancy. METHODS Of 1120 pregnant women participated in the cross-sectional study which consisted of Perceived Stress Scale, Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and MOS 12-item Short Form Health Survey. Parallel multiple mediator models were used to analyze the relations between stress, depressive symptoms, sleep quality and PHQOL/MHQOL. RESULTS The effect of perceived stress on PHQOL was partially through the indirect path of sleep quality (β=-0.061). But in the model for MHQOL, depressive symptoms and sleep quality played parallel mediators, and the indirect path effect of depressive symptoms (β=-0.179) was higher than sleep quality (β=-0.029). CONCLUSION The findings contributed to the understanding about the influential mechanism of stress on PHQOL/MHQOL. And it reminded the importance of sleep quality and depressive symptoms for improving QOL in late pregnancy.

The aim of this study is to explore the macroscale neural mechanisms of the antidepressant effects of Xiaoyaosan, a traditional Chinese herbal formula. We analyzed blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) functional magnetic resonance imaging signals. To further minimize the hemodynamic variations of BOLD signals and analyze the intra-region neural activity or temporal coherence, we employed the newly developed regional homogeneity (ReHo) approach to determine aberrant functional connectivity using the chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) mouse model of depression and to also explore the brain-region rescue effect of modified Xiaoyaosan (MXYS) in such mice. We found the aberrant ReHo in CUMS mice replicated previous discoveries in patients with depression. Intriguingly, MXYS only normalized several limbic regions, which suggests the essential roles of these regions in mediating the antidepressant effects of MXYS. Our results provide a reliable framework for the use of ReHo analysis with animal models of depression and further suggest a new perspective to elucidate the antidepressant effects of MXYS.

Few-layer black phosphorus (BP) has recently emerged as a promising two-dimensional (2D) material for electronic and optoelectronic devices because of its high mobility and tunable band gap. However, BP is known to quickly degrade and oxidize in ambient conditions by breaking of the P-P bonds. As a result, there is a growing need to encapsulate BP that avoids oxygen and water while retaining the high electric performance of the devices. Here, we demonstrate a hydrophobic polymer encapsulation technique with improved thermal conductivity for high current density, which preserves the electrical properties of BP back-gate transistors compared to the commonly used Al2O3 encapsulation with improved mobility and minimal traps. The on-off ratio increases by more than an order of magnitude at room temperature and more than 4 orders of magnitude at cryogenic temperatures. High field transport shows the first systematic study on unprecedented breakdown characteristics up to -5.5 V for the 0.16 μm transistors with a high current of 1.2 mA/μm at 20 K. These discoveries open up a new way to achieve high-performance 2D semiconductors with significantly improved breakdown voltage, on-off ratios, and stability under ambient conditions for practical applications in electronic and optoelectronic devices.

In this letter, we demonstrate high performance black phosphorus (BP) top gate transistors using molecular layer deposition (MLD) of high-quality alucone films as top gate dielectrics. Ethylene glycol was used as an oxygen precursor instead of using water or ozone as precursor, which typically results in the oxidation of BP surface. The carrier mobility of BP transistors using the alucone dielectric reaches 216 cm $^{2}/\text{V}\cdot \text{s}$ at room temperature, which is 4.5 times higher than that of with Al2O3 dielectrics using O3. The ON current and ON–OFF ratio of the alucone-based transistors are also much higher than the other two types of devices. Meanwhile, we observe a metal-insulator transition in the BP top gate with alucone films, suggesting an excellent interface quality with efficient electro-static gate control. This result shows great potential of MLD for applications in high-quality BP top gate devices.

Background The effect of parental marital conflict on Internet addiction has been well-established; however, little is known regarding the underlying mechanism of this effect. The aim of this study was to explore the mediating effect of depression and anxiety, as well as the role of peer attachment as a moderator in this relation between parental marital conflict and Internet addiction. Methods The moderated mediation analysis was tested using data from a cross-sectional sample of 2259 high school students who completed questionnaires regarding marital conflict, depression, anxiety, peer attachment and Internet addiction. Results The results indicated that the effect of parental marital conflict on Internet addiction was mediated by depression and anxiety. In addition, peer attachment moderated the association between parental marital conflict and depression/anxiety. Conclusions This study helps to elucidate the mechanism underlying the association between parental marital conflict and Internet addiction.

Mutations in the gene BEST1 usually cause bestrophinopathies, such as the rare progressive diseases Best vitelliform macular dystrophy (BVMD) and autosomal recessive bestrophinopathy (ARB). This study aimed to investigate the clinical characteristics of patients with BVMD or ARB carrying BEST1 mutations. A total of 12 probands including 9 patients with a clinical diagnosis of BVMD and 3 patients with a clinical diagnosis of ARB were recruited for genetics analysis. All patients underwent detailed ophthalmic examination. All coding exons of the BEST1 gene were screened by PCR-based DNA sequencing. Programs of PolyPhen-2, SIFT, and MutationTaster were used to analyze the potential pathogenicity of the mutations in BEST1. In the 9 unrelated patients with BVMD, one heterozygous BEST1 mutation was revealed in 8 patients and two compound heterozygous mutations in 1 patient. In the 3 unrelated patients with ARB, two compound heterozygous mutations were revealed in 2 patients and three compound heterozygous mutations in 1 patient. Molecular analyses identified a total of 15 mutations, including 3 novel mutations (c.424A>G p.S142G, c.436G>A p.A146T, and c.155T>C p.L52P). Antivascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) drugs were given to two affected eyes, especially those also exhibiting choroidal neovascularization (CNV), and no serious adverse events occurred. Our study indicates that there is wide genotypic and phenotypic variability in patients with BVMD or ARB in China. The screening of BEST1 gene is significant for the precise diagnosis of BVMD and ARB.

Background: It is well known that some lifestyle-related behaviors are related to depressive symptoms, but the unique and cumulative effects of lifestyle-related behaviors on depressive symptoms among Chinese adolescents are still controversial. Aims: The aims of this study were to examine the unique and cumulative effects of lifestyle-related behaviors on depressive symptoms among Chinese adolescents, and explored the potential influences of gender difference on these associations. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study among 3967 Chinese adolescents aged 11 to 19 from Jilin, China during September and October of 2018. Students reported their lifestyle factors including sleep duration, time spent on computer, time spent on television, time spent on homework, eating breakfast, smoking, drinking, physical activity, and outdoor activity. Depressive symptoms were measured using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D). Results: The prevalence of depressive symptoms was 28.2% among Chinese adolescents. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that sleep duration Conclusion: The important role of lifestyle factors should be taking into consideration when create intervention programs to prevent and reduce depressive symptoms among adolescents. In addition, preventive interventions may need to focus on gender-informed approaches when targeting multiple lifestyle factors.

BACKGROUND Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) in pregnancy has a negative impact. Effective treatment should be timely adopted. METHODS We report a case of a 24-year-old pregnant woman admitted with PHPT, hypercalcemia crisis, hypokalemia, thyroid nodules, hyperthyroidism, and intrauterine single live fetus in the 2nd trimester of pregnancy. Right parathyroidectomy and partial thyroidectomy were timely performed. Postoperative pathology suggested parathyroid adenoma with capsule invasion and thyroid nodules. RESULTS Postoperative serum PTH and Ca2+ were effectively reduced. Eventually, a healthy fetus was delivered via cesarean at full term. CONCLUSIONS Parathyroidectomy within reasonable operative timing can improve maternal and fetal prognosis in PHPT during pregnancy, especially with concomitant hypercalcemia crisis.

Introduction Oil body (OB), a subcellular organelle that stores oil in plant seeds, is considered a new transdermal drug delivery system. With the increasing understanding of the OB and its main protein (oleosin), numerous studies have been conducted on OB as "carrier" for the expression of exogenous proteins. In our previous study, oil body fused with aFGF (OLAF) was obtained using a plant oil body expression system, that had been preliminarily proven to be effective in accelerating the healing of skin wounds. However, no dermal toxicological information on OLAF is available. Objective To ensure the dermal safety of OLAF, a series of tests (the acute dermal toxicity test, 21-day repeat dermal toxicity test, dermal irritation test and skin sensitization test) were conducted after optimizing the extraction protocol of OLAF. Materials and methods To improve the extraction rate of OLAF, response surface methodology (RSM) was first employed to optimize the extraction conditions. Then, Wistar rats were exposed to OLAF (400 mg·kg-1 body weight) in two different ways (6 hours/time for 24 hours and 1 time/day for 21 days) to evaluate the acute dermal toxicity and 21-day repeated dermal toxicity of OLAF. In the acute dermal toxicity test, clinical observations were conducted to evaluate the toxicity, behaviour, and health of the animals for 14 consecutive days. Similarly, the clinical signs, body weight, haematological and biochemical parameters, histopathological changes and other indicators were also detected during the 21 day administration. For the dermal irritation test, single and multiple doses of OLAF (125 mg·kg-1 body weight) were administered to albino rabbits for 14 days (1 time/day). The irritation reaction on the skin of each albino rabbit was recorded and scored. Meanwhile, skin sensitization to OLAF was conducted using guinea pigs for a period of 28 days. Results Suitable extraction conditions for OLAF (PBS concentration 0.01, pH of PBS 8.6, solid-liquid ratio 1:385 g·mL-1) were obtained using RSM. Under these conditions, the extraction rate and particle size of OLAF were 7.29% and 1290 nm, respectively. In the tests of acute dermal toxicity and 21-day repeated dermal toxicity, no mortality or significant differences were observed in terms of clinical signs, body weight, haematological parameters, biochemical parameters and anatomopathological analysis. With respect to the dermal irritation test and skin sensitization test, no differences in erythema, oedema or other abnormalities were observed between treatment and control groups on gross and histopathological examinations. Conclusions The results of this study suggest that OLAF does not cause obvious toxicity, skin sensitization or irritation in animals.

Mesenchymalstem cell (MSC)-based therapy is being increasingly explored in preclinical and clinical studies as a regenerative method for treating osteoarthritis (OA). However, the use of primary MSCs is hampered by a number of limitations, including donor heterogeneity and inconsistent cell quality. Here, we tested the therapeutic potential of embryonic stem cell-derived MSCs (ES-MSCs) in anOA rat model. ES-MSCs were generated and identified by morphology, trilineage differentiation and flow cytometry. Sprague Dawley rats were treated with either a single dose (106 cells/rat) of ES-MSCs or with three doses spaced one week apart for each dose, starting at four weeks after anterior cruciate ligament transectionto induce OA. Cartilage quality was evaluated at 6 and 10 weeks after treatment with behavioral analysis, macroscopic examination, and histology. At sixweeks after treatment, the groups treated with both single and repeated doses of ES-MSCs had significantly better modified Mankin scores and International Cartilage Repair Society (ICRS) macroscopic scores in the femoral condyle compared to the control group. At 10 weeks after treatment, the repeated doses group had a significantly better ICRS macroscopic scores in the femoral condyle compared to the single dose and control groups. Histological analysis also showed more proteoglycan and less cartilage loss, along with lower Mankin scores in the repeated doses group. In conclusion, treatment with multiple injections of ES-MSCs can ameliorate OA in a rat model. TheES-MSCs have potential to be considered as a regenerative therapy for OA, and can provide an infinite cellular source.

Background & aims: The strategy of increasing the postoperative enteral nutrition dose to the target goal has not yet been clarified. This study aimed to determine whether an immediate goal-dose enteral nutrition (IGEN) strategy is non-inferior to a gradual goal-dose enteral nutrition (GGEN) strategy in reducing infections in patients undergoing abdominal surgery involving the organs of the digestive system. Methods: This randomized controlled trial enrolled postoperative patients with nutritional risk screening 2002 scores ≥3 from 11 Chinese hospitals. Energy targets were calculated as 25 kcal/kg and 30 kcal/kg of ideal body weight for women and men, respectively. Patients were randomly assigned 1:1 to IGEN or GGEN group after enteral tolerance was confirmed (30% of the target on day 2). The IGEN group immediately started receiving 100% of the caloric requirements on day 3, while the GGEN group received 40% progressing to 80% of target on day 7. The primary endpoint was the infection rate until discharge, based on the intention-to-treat population. Results: A total of 411 patients were enrolled and randomized to the IGEN and GGEN groups, and five patients did not receive the allocated intervention. A total of 406 patients were included in the primary analysis, with 199 and 207 in the IGEN and GGEN groups, respectively. Infection was observed in 17/199 (8.5%) in the IGEN group and 19/207 (9.2%) in the GGEN group, respectively (difference, −0.6%; [95% confidence interval (CI), −6.2%–4.9%]; P = 0.009 for non-inferiority test). There were significantly more gastrointestinal intolerance events with IGEN than with GGEN (58/199 [29.1%] vs. 32/207 [15.5%], P < 0.001). All other secondary endpoints were non-significant. Conclusions: Among postoperative patients at nutritional risk, IGEN was non-inferior to GGEN in regards to infectious complications. IGEN was associated with more gastrointestinal intolerance events. It showed that IGEN cannot be considered to be clinically directive. ClinicalTrials.gov (#NCT03117348).

It has been widely acknowledged that anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) is a golden marker of ovarian reserve. Declined ovarian reserve (DOR), based on experience from reproductive-aged women, refers to both the quantitative and qualitative reduction in oocytes. This view is challenged by a recent study clearly showing that the quality of oocytes is similar in young women undergoing IVF cycles irrespective of the level of AMH. However, it remains elusive whether AMH indicates oocyte quality in women with advanced age (WAA). The aim of this study was to investigate this issue. In the present study, we retrospectively analysed the data generated from a total of 492 IVF/ICSI cycles (from January 2017 to July 2020), and these IVF/ICSI cycles contributed 292 embryo transfer (ET) cycles (from June 2017 to September 2019, data of day 3 ET were included for analysis) in our reproductive centre. Based on the level of AMH, all patients (= > 37 years old) were divided into 2 groups: the AMH high (H) group and the AMH low (L) group. The parameters of in vitro embryo development and clinical outcomes were compared between the two groups. The results showed that women in the L group experienced severe DOR, as demonstrated by a higher rate of primary diagnosis of DOR, lower antral follicle count (AFC), higher level of basal follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and cancelation cycles, lower level of E2 production on the day of surge, and fewer oocytes and MII oocytes retrieved. Compared with women in the H group, women in the L group showed slightly reduced top embryo formation rate but a similar normal fertilization rate and blastocyst formation rate. More importantly, we found that the rates of implantation, spontaneous miscarriage and livebirth were similar between the two groups, while the pregnancy rate was significantly reduced in the L group compared with the H group. Further analysis indicated that the higher pregnancy rate of women in the H group may be due to more top embryos transferred per cycle. Due to an extremely low implantation potential for transfer of non-top embryos from WAA (= > 37 years old) in our reproductive centre, we assumed that all the embryos that implanted may result from the transfer of top embryos. Based on this observation, we found that the ratio of embryos that successfully implanted or eventually led to a livebirth to top embryos transferred was similar between the H and the L groups. Furthermore, women with clinical pregnancy or livebirth in the H or L group did not show a higher level of serum AMH but were younger than women with non-pregnancy or non-livebirth. Taken together, this study showed that AMH had a limited role in predicting in vitro embryo developmental potential and had no role in predicting the in vivo embryo developmental potential, suggesting that in WAA, AMH should not be used as a marker of oocyte quality. This study supports the view that the accumulation of top embryos via multiple oocyte retrieval times is a good strategy for the treatment of WAA.

Objectives The current study aims to explore person-centered communication between health care professionals and COVID-19-infected older patients in acute care settings. Methods The current qualitative study explored the communication between professionals and COVID-19-infected older adults in the acute care setting through 2 rounds of interviews with physicians and nurses who provided direct care and treatment for COVID-19-infected older patients in Wuhan, China. We explored the possibilities and significance of facilitating effective communication despite multiple challenges in the pandemic. Conventional content analysis was adopted to analyze the rich data collected from our participants. Results It is possible and necessary to initiate and sustain person-centered communication despite multiple challenges brought by the pandemic. The achievement of person-centered communication can play significant roles in addressing challenges, building mutual trust, improving quality of care and relationships, and promoting treatment adherence and patients’ psychological well-being. Discussion It is challenging for health care professionals to provide care for COVID-19-infected older adults, especially for those with cognitive and sensory impairment, in acute care settings. Facilitating person-centered communication is a significant strategy in responding to the pandemic crisis and a core element of person-centered care.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) is an acute respiratory infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS‐CoV‐2). COVID‐19 mainly causes damage to the lung, as well as other organs and systems such as the hearts, the immune system and so on. Although the pathogenesis of COVID‐19 has been fully elucidated, there is no specific therapy for the disease at present, and most treatments are limited to supportive care. Stem cell therapy may be a potential treatment for refractory and unmanageable pulmonary illnesses, which has shown some promising results in preclinical studies. In this review, we systematically summarize the pathogenic progression and potential mechanisms underlying stem cell therapy in COVID‐19, and registered COVID‐19 clinical trials. Of all the stem cell therapies touted for COVID‐19 treatment, mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) or MSC‐like derivatives have been the most promising in preclinical studies and clinical trials so far. MSCs have been suggested to ameliorate the cytokine release syndrome (CRS) and protect alveolar epithelial cells by secreting many kinds of factors, demonstrating safety and possible efficacy in COVID‐19 patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). However, considering the consistency and uniformity of stem cell quality cannot be quantified nor guaranteed at this point, more work remains to be done in the future., The potential mechanisms of MSCs therapy for COVID‐19. MSCs have great therapeutic potential in immunomodulation and tissue repair through secretion of soluble paracrine protein factors and exosomes. MSCs can regulate the functions of a variety of immune cells, secrete several cytokines, promote tissue repair and regeneration, and may play important therapeutic roles in patients with COVID‐19. The standard system has become one of the important aspects in the modernization of social governance system and governance ability. The establishment of the standard system should not only face the top-level design, but also for the specific implementation. In the process of establishing the standard system by traditional methods, with the help of experts' experience, the future development trend and key development fields are predicted, and the standard system is planned by “brainstorming”. With the continuous progress of information technology, as the “universal language”, standard connects the world by its typical network attributes. With the rapid developed of knowledge graph (KG) technology, establishing the relationship between different standards, and analyzing in depth, we can get the general framework of the standard system. At the same time, combined with the experience of experts and the future development trend of technology, a relatively complete standard system is formed. The results show that the method adopted in this paper has certain guiding significance for the establishment of a scientific standard system.

Background: Somatic symptom disorders (SSDs) are common medical disorders characterized by various biological, social, and psychological pathogenic factors. Little is known about the neural correlations of SSD. Methods: In this study, we evaluated the dysfunction in 45 patients with SSD and in 43 controls by combining the regional homogeneity (ReHo) amplitudes of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) methods based on resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging. Results: Compared to the controls, the patients with SSD exhibited significantly greater ReHo in the right cingulate gyrus and smaller ReHo in the right precuneus, left inferior and temporal gyrus extending to the left middle temporal gyrus and left parahippocampal gyrus, and right pons. The SSD patients showed higher ALFF values in the cingulate gyrus extending to the left medial frontal gyrus, right insula extending to the right inferior frontal gyrus, and left medial frontal gyrus extending to the left anterior cingulate cortex. Conclusions: These dysfunction areas seem to have a particular importance for the occurrence of SSD, which may result in dysfunction in self-relevant processes, emotional processing, multimodal integration, arousal, interoception, and body perception.

This study aims to explore the relationship between psychological distress and post-traumatic stress disorder among Chinese participants as the result of COVID-19 outbreak. This study was conducted within 1 month after COVID-19 appeared in China, it included 570 participants age from 14 to 35. The results indicated that 12.8% of all participants with the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder and the effects of psychological distress on post-traumatic stress disorder was mediated by negative coping style. Gender moderated the direct effect between psychological distress and post-traumatic stress disorder, which is a significant discovery for relevant departments to take further measures.

Lung injury and fibrosis represent the most significant outcomes of severe and acute lung disorders, including COVID-19. However, there are still no effective drugs to treat lung injury and fibrosis. In this study, we report the generation of clinical-grade human embryonic stem cells (hESCs)-derived immunity- and matrix-regulatory cells (IMRCs) manufactured under good manufacturing practice (GMP) requirements, that can treat lung injury and fibrosis in vivo. We generate IMRCs through sequentially differentiating hESCs with xeno-free reagents. IMRCs possess a unique gene expression profile distinct from umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (UCMSCs), such as higher levels of proliferative, immunomodulatory and anti-fibrotic genes. Moreover, intravenous delivery of IMRCs inhibits both pulmonary inflammation and fibrosis in mouse models of lung injury, and significantly improves the survival rate of the recipient mice in a dose-dependent manner, likely through their paracrine functions. IMRCs are superior to both primary UCMSCs and FDA-approved pirfenidone, with an excellent efficacy and safety profile in mice, monkeys and two severely ill COVID-19 patients in our pilot study. In light of recent public health crises involving pneumonia, acute lung injury (ALI) and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), our findings indicate that IMRCs are ready for clinical trials on lung disorders.

Background and purpose Migraine is a complex and disabling neurological disorder, the exact neurological mechanisms of which remain unclear. The thalamus is considered to be the hub of the central processing and integration of nociceptive information, as well as the modulation of these processes. Methods A total of 48 migraineurs without aura (MWoAs) during the interictal phase and 48 age- and sex-matched healthy controls underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging scans. We utilized masked independent component analysis and seed-based functional connectivity (FC) to investigate whether MWoAs exhibited abnormal FC between subregions in the thalamus and the cortex regions. Results The MWoAs showed significantly weaker FC between the anterior dorsal thalamic nucleus and left precuneus. Additionally, MWoAs exhibited significantly reduced FC between the ventral posterior nucleus (VPN) and left precuneus, right inferior parietal lobule (R-IPL) and right middle frontal gyrus. Furthermore, the FC Z-scores between the VPN and R-IPL were negatively correlated with pain intensity in MWoAs. The disease duration of patients was negatively correlated with the FC Z-scores between the VPN and R-IPL. Conclusion These altered thalamocortical connectivity patterns may contribute to multisensory integration abnormalities, deficits in pain attention, cognitive evaluation and pain modulation. Pain sensitivity and disease duration are closely tied to abnormal FC between the VPN and R-IPL. Remarkably, recurrent headache attacks might contribute to this maladaptive functional plasticity closely related to pain intensity.

Background Previous studies have showed the independent associations between screen time, physical activity (PA), sleep duration, and depressive symptoms, but little is known about the influence of lifestyles on depressive symptoms. This study aimed to identify clustering patterns of health-related behavior in Chinese adolescents and their association with depressive symptoms. Methods The sample consisted of 4178 adolescent students. Screen time, physical activity, and sleep time were self-reported. The level of depressive symptoms was measured using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale. A two-step cluster analysis was conducted to identify lifestyle patterns. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression were used to examine the associations between clusters and depressive symptoms. Results About 28.1% of participants reported depressive symptoms. Four lifestyle clusters were identified: (1) active pattern (n = 865 [20.7%]); (2) high sleep duration pattern (n = 1263 [30.2%]); (3) high screen time pattern (n = 665 [15.9%]); and (4) low physical activity–low sleep duration pattern (n = 1385[33.1%]). Cluster 1 and 2 were relatively healthy groups. Cluster 3 and 4 were at a higher risk of developing depressive symptoms than cluster 1. Limitations This was a cross-sectional study, and causal relations could not be identified. Self-reported questionnaire instruments were used to collect data, which might have led to some recall bias. Conclusions Clusters of lifestyle behaviors were identified, and differences in depressive symptoms were found among clusters. Public mental illness prevention strategies should expand their capacity to focus on lifestyle patterns.

Background Clinically, skeletal muscle ischemia/reperfusion injury is a life-threatening syndrome that is often caused by skeletal muscle damage and is characterized by oxidative stress and inflammatory responses. Bilobalide has been found to have antioxidative and anti-inflammatory effects. However, it is unclear whether bilobalide can protect skeletal muscle from ischemia/reperfusion injury. Methods The effects of bilobalide on ischemia/reperfusion-injured skeletal muscle were investigated by performing hematoxylin and eosin staining and assessing the wet weight/dry weight ratio of muscle tissue. Then, we measured lipid peroxidation, antioxidant activity and inflammatory cytokine levels. Moreover, Western blotting was conducted to examine the protein levels of MAPK/NF-κB pathway members. Results Bilobalide treatment could protected hind limb skeletal muscle from ischemia/reperfusion injury by alleviating oxidative stress and inflammatory responses via the MAPK/NF-κB pathways. Conclusions Bilobalide may be a promising drug for I/R-injured muscle tissue. However, the specific mechanisms for the protective effects still need further study.

Circularly polarized luminescent (CPL) materials have received a lot of interest due to their potential applications in next-generation displays. However, the development of easily accessible red circularly polarized phosphorescent emitters for practical organic light-emitting diodes fabrication remains a grand challenge. In this paper, we report a new family of CPL-active platinum complexes based on the binaphthalene chiral platform. These axially chiral platinabinaphthalenes were facile synthesized by directly incorporating platinum(II) into the π-conjugated backbone of a commercially available enantiopure binaphthalene derivate. These complexes exhibit aggregation-induced circularly polarized phosphorescence enhancement with high quantum yields of up to 66% and luminescence dissymmetry factors of around 2.6 × 10-3. Moreover, solution-processable circularly polarized organic light-emitting diodes (CPOLEDs) using these complexes as emitters show good performance with the maximum luminance of up to 3500 cd m-2 and dissymmetry factor values of around 1.0 × 10-3. These findings by the rational design of axially chiral platinabinaphthalenes are important for the development of high-performance CPL complexes for CPOLEDs.

Background Childhood maltreatment (CM) significantly increases the risk of adulthood psychopathology. Interplay between susceptible genetic variations and CM contributes to the occurrence of depression. This review aims to systematically synthesize the relationships between genetic variations and depression among those exposed to CM. Methods Electronic databases and gray literature to March 31st, 2020 were searched for literature on the topic of depression and CM limited to English-language. Data extraction and quality assessment of key study characteristics were conducted. Qualitative approaches were used to synthesize the findings. Results The initial search resulted in 9185 articles. A total of 29 articles that met the eligibility criteria were included in this review. High heterogeneity was identified regarding the study sample ages, candidate genes and SNPs, the categorization of CM and depression. The findings of this review include several frequently studied genes (5-HTTLPR, CRHR1, BDNF, CREB1, FKBP5, IL1B, NTRK2, and OXTR). Both consistent and inconsistent findings were identified. Overall, the interplay of CM with CREB1-rs2253206 significantly increased the risk of depression. In contrast, CRHR1-TCA haplotype (rs7209436, rs4792887, rs110402), CRHR1-rs17689882, and CRHR1-rs110402 showed protective effects on depression and depressive symptoms among individuals with a history of maltreatment. Limitations Due to clinical and methodological diversity of the studies a qualitative approach was used. Conclusion This review firstly provides a comprehensive overview of the interplay between CM and genetic variations in adult depression. Future etiological explorations should focus on the above-identified genes for down-stream exploration and address the issues and challenges of gene by environment studies.

Low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) is reported to have therapeutic action on ulcerative colitis (UC). To facilitate its oral administration and improve the colon-targeting property, LMWH-loaded nanoparticles (TMC-NPs and SA-TMC-NPs) are prepared and evaluated by a series of studies, including their stabilities, drug release profiles, mucosal permeation, mucoadhesion, cytotoxicities, cellular uptake profiles, anticoagulant and anti-inflammatory activities, mucosal healing properties, biosafety and ameliorative effects on experimental colitis. Consequently, oral administration of LMWH-loaded NPs for 5 days perform significant therapeutic effects on mice, which are manifested as improved body weight gains, colon length, DAI score, MPO activity and histological characteristics. Purpose To evaluate the efficacy of half-dose photodynamic therapy (PDT) for the treatment of bullous retinal detachment. Methods Interventional prospective case series in six eyes from six consecutive patients with bullous retinal detachment. The effected eyes were treated with indocyanine green angiography (ICGA)-guided half-dose PDT with multifocal and large laser spots. Clinical evaluations included best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), ophthalmoscopy, ophthalmic B scan, fundus fluorescein angiography (FFA), optical coherence tomography (OCT), and ICGA at each scheduled visit at baseline; at 1, 3, and 6 months after PDT; and during follow-up after 6 months. Results All six eyes received half-dose verteporfin PDT with a mean number of therapeutic spots 2.83 ± 1.47 and a mean spot size of 4647 ± 996 μm in diameter. Three months after PDT, retinal reattachment was observed on B scans and resolution of sub-retinal fluid (SRF) was observed in OCT images for five eyes. There was no significant difference in the mean logMAR BCVA between the baseline and the value at 1 month after PDT (P = 0.477). At 3 months after PDT, the mean logMAR BCVA improved significantly from a baseline value of 1.02 to 0.54 (P = 0.044). At 6 months after PDT, the mean logMAR BCVA further improved to 0.46 (P = 0.025) and remained stable. One affected eye received a second half-dose PDT for SRF not reduced until the second month after PDT. Retinal reattachment and SRF resolution were observed at 1 and 3 months after the second therapy, respectively. BCVA improved from a baseline value of 20/63 to 20/20 at 1 month after the second PDT and remained stable until the sixth month after the second PDT. During follow-up after more than 6 months, recurrence occurred in no cases. Conclusions This study demonstrated half-dose PDT with multifocal and large laser spots was an effective treatment for bullous retinal detachment contributing to the retinal reattachment, a resolution of SRF, and an improvement of BCVA. Thus, PDT for the treatment of bullous retinal detachment is considered to be a worthwhile endeavor.
